THE SCIENCE OF CHILDREN'S RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT by Annette Mahoney. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2021. 86 pages. Paperback; $20.00. ISBN: 9781108812771. *The Science of Children's Religious and Spiritual Development by Annette Mahoney is a recent addition to the Cambridge Elements Child Development series. Between an introduction and conclusion, Mahoney has five sections to guide her summary. Overall, her approach is well conceived, approachable, and highly informative. Having taught undergraduate courses on child development for fifteen years at Christian liberal arts institutions, I found Mahoney's volume to be a thorough yet concise resource on religious and spiritual development from which I can draw resources as well as enrich discourse with engaged students. *In her introduction, Mahoney quickly sets the stage for the importance of religious and spiritual development in children. She notes how parents around the world desire to raise "good" (prosocial) children. Religion is frequently cited as influencing their parenting practices. The emphasis in research is on adolescence and adulthood for the specific study of religious and spiritual development, leaving a large gap when it comes to how these issues pertain to children's development. *Mahoney draws from Harold Koenig, Michael McCullough, and David Larson to define Religious/Religion (R) and Spiritual/Spirituality (S).1 She acknowledges that this is not an agreed upon straightforward process, and that often R and S are not substantively different in the social science literature. With children, perceptions of God are commonly examined, though this only begins to scratch the surface of what's beneath their RS development. *After a quick historical look at RS, Mahoney offers a brief overview of Fowler's faith development theory, citing his 1981 book, Stages of Faith: The Psychology of Human Development and the Quest for Meaning.2 She concludes that his "assumptions perhaps helped to dampen interest by mainstream developmental scientists in investigating children's RS" (p. 6). Here I wanted to better understand her conclusion and felt that more explanation would be beneficial for her argument. *Mahoney frequently reminds the reader that most of the research, both historically and currently, occurs in Western societies. There have been a handful of measures developed, which she presents in a table with the name, authors, definitions of R and S, subscales, and example items (pp. 11-19). This is followed by a helpful narrative of each measure and a comparison of four models that emerge. The reader quickly observes the murky state of measuring RS. Prosocial behaviors and positive psychology concepts are intertwined with RS, and Mahoney calls for clearer communication and increased transparency. *Due to the lack of studies with children, Mahoney reviews adolescents' RS and related psychosocial adjustment. RS appears to influence the views and choices of adolescents in areas such as risk taking, self-esteem, and depression. Mahoney presents a well-articulated description of the "muddled middle" (p. 28). Adolescents with either a high or a low state of RS are best adjusted. It appears that RS ambivalence places adolescents at greatest risk. Factors such as cognitive dissonance and moral inconsistencies appear to be at play. *The few studies on children's psychosocial adjustment and RS seem to suggest that children with significant life stressors (e.g., family conflict) may benefit from RS. The reciprocal nature of the parent-child relationship has relevance, as greater parental RS shows both positive and negative outcomes. On the upside, parents with higher levels of RS are more efficacious and warm, which in turn increases children's social and academic functioning. On the downside, greater parental RS predicts greater parental behavioral control and less autonomy in children. This in turn can be linked to more emotional problems in children, both internalizing (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing (e.g., acting out, delinquency). It is important to note that these levels of problems are typically subclinical. *Mahoney also reviews the relationship between corporal punishment and parental RS. The research is clear on physical punishment (e.g., spanking) being ineffective, resulting in greater negative outcomes. The findings are mixed with regard to RS. Parents with higher RS, particularly those with lower education, implement harsher parenting strategies; however, greater attendance of religious services has been linked to less use of such strategies. Furthermore, higher religious attendance has been found to be a protective factor when it comes to child maltreatment (i.e., abuse and neglect). *When parents are asked specifically about their parenting goals, it becomes evident that not many place fostering a high level of RS to their children at the top of the list. Goals that surpass it include nurturing high self-esteem and interpersonal skills, contributing to the larger society, carrying on family and cultural traditions, and providing the necessary education for a good future. Again, these are primarily Western reports and Mahoney reminds the reader that other countries' perspectives are needed. Like non-Western studies, studies of nontraditional parenting units, such as single parents, same-sex parents, and economically disadvantaged parents, are underrepresented. Furthermore, the type of theistic schema provides another area of diversity that is lacking, as children can be reared in polytheistic, nontheistic, atheist, or agnostic environments. *Mahoney's final section looks at social and cognitive-developmental research. Concepts such as theory of mind and attachment enter the scene. The primary area that has been studied in children's RS development is their concept of God. Preliminary findings suggest that children's perceptions of God mirror how they are being parented (e.g., punishing parents → punishing God, nurturing parents → nurturing God, powerful parents → powerful God, etc.). Examining children's prayers also sheds some light on RS development, though again findings are mixed and limited. There is more work to be done. *Mahoney calls on social scientists to take the lead in providing guidance to parents to uphold the United Nations' 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child Article 14, 1-2 that states: "States Parties shall respect the right of the child to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; States Parties shall respect the rights and duties of the parents and, when applicable, legal guardians, to provide direction to the child in the exercise of his or her right in a manner consistent with the evolving capacities of the child."3 More intentional investigation of children around the globe can help parents directly but also inform policy makers. Mahoney states that "one central observation is that this literature is in its infancy stage" (p. 62). *Overall, Mahoney's review of children's RS development in this volume is thorough yet concise, troubling yet hopeful, vague yet nuanced. She concludes with six key areas and related findings to recap how the scientific study of children's RS development can be improved in the years to come. Thankfully, RS has begun to attract significant attention in the field, including from the Templeton Foundation's attempt to build a more global community of social scientists.4 After reading this book, I feel much better equipped to elucidate what is known and what is yet to be discovered. This is important, not only in academic communities of colleagues and students, but also in the broader communities of church and society and in our personal communities. *Notes *1Harold G. Every human child begins their education from within the family because there is no one in this world who is not born into a family. Long before there was a formal educational institution called a school, the family had existed as an institution that played an important role in serving children's education, namely as the laying of the main foundation. Starting from the family each child learns many things, starting from how to interact with others, expressing opinions, how to behave, to how to embrace certain values as principles in living life. Additionally, broadly speaking, among scientists, especially observers of children's and family education, both at the local, national, and world level, strongly emphasizes their attention on preschooll children's education, especially when still in the care, and guidance of parents. They are, because of the patterns of life and tolerance exemplified by their family environment are the most decisive for children's education at the beginning of their social life with citizens and their environment. This paper introduces various articles which are grouped in thematic issues about preparing for improved services in children's education, and aspects that influence the success of education from an early age. In it presents an overview of various problem, and research work that is recognized in the field of child education services, as a material for deep reflection on complex problems in the world of child education

This paper is based on keynote addresses by Jane Woodruff, CEO, UnitingCare Burnside to the National Association of Community Based Children's Services, University of Wollongong, April 2004; and to the Mobile Children's Service Association Conference, Dubbo, August 2003. It offers the perspective of one NSW child and family welfare agency on reasons for children's and family services to work more closely together. These include a shared concern for the early years; the need to address common risk and protective factors; and research which suggests combining approaches will achieve better results for children and families. Drawing from current practice and policy initiatives, the paper then suggests three main areas where children's and family services can pursue greater cooperation.

Service coordination from the perspective of parents and other caregivers whose children have serious emotional disabilities was examined in this study. Service coordination was assessed with a self-report instrument administered to 266 caregivers. Analyses focused on the relationship of service coordination to child and family characteristics, service system complexity, family participation, overall satisfaction with services, and comprehensiveness of needs met. Although complexity of services was not related to service coordination, the severity of children's problems was inversely related and family participation was positively related to service coordination. In addition, service coordination significantly predicted satisfaction with services and comprehensiveness. The findings illustrate the utility of including the family perspective in the assessment of systems of care.

Child welfare is the responsibility of the family because the child is part of the family. However, in reality there are still many who neglect their children so that the children's welfare is threatened. Abandoned children need protection to ensure their survival. One of the efforts made in dealing with the problem of neglected children is through an institution-based child service program through child social service institutions. However, institution-based child services have not been optimal in realizing children's welfare. Thus, children who are in institution-based care need to be transferred to family-based care so that the child's welfare can be better. One of the permanent efforts to care for children is through adoption. The method used in this research is mixed methods research method. The design chosen in this study is Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods, the researcher will measure the level of children's welfare with quantitative research first followed by qualitative research. The results of quantitative research regarding the welfare of preschool adopted children show that basically the welfare of adopted children is in the good category. The results of the qualitative research found that the background and reasons or motivation of adoptive parents to adopt an effect on the care of the adopted child so that the child's welfare can be better. Most adoptive parents do not yet have biological children, so the presence of adopted children is a complement to their long-awaited family. The opportunity they get for adoption makes them try to care for, nurture, and treat their adopted child very well. They always pay attention to children's physical development, children's psychological development, children's social development and children's cognitive development so that children's welfare can be achieved.

The purpose of this research is to find out the connection between mother and teacher relationships and externalizing and internalizing behavioral problems of 48'60-month-old children. In this regard, a correlational study was conducted with teachers (n=59) and mothers (n=252) of 48'60-month-old pre-school children in a metropolitan city in Turkey. Data collected through Preschool and Kindergarten Behavior Scale (PKBS), Student' Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS), and Child'Parent Relationship Scale (CPRS). Study results showed that children's internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems have direct connection with their relationships with their mothers and teachers. When children's conflicts with their teachers and mothers increase, their intimacy decrease with them. It was also found that as the children's conflicts with their mothers increase, conflicts with their teachers also increase. According to findings of the study; there is a need to provide in service and pre-service trainings for teachers and pre-service teachers about the importance of quality relation with children, methods, problem solving skills and especially right approaches to problematic children. Also, as one of the pre-conditions of positive teacher-child relationship is a positive teacher-family relationship, both parents' and teachers' awareness should be raised about family involvement.

Most had a history of maltreatment (57%), were adopted domestically (67%), and lived in adoptive families with married parents (82%). Almost all had received at least 1 other postadoption service (90%) and many (47%) had received 4 or more. Families' greatest concerns were child development and family relationships, with fewer concerns about culture, race, or birth parents. Although managing their children's behavior was a concern, families reported feeling effective and expressed considerable closeness to their child.

AbstractObjectiveAccording to the Family Ecological Model (FEM), parenting behaviours are shaped by the contexts in which families are embedded. In the present study, we utilize the FEM to guide a mixed-methods community assessment and summarize the results. Additionally, we discuss the utility of the FEM and outline possible improvements.DesignUsing a cross-sectional design, qualitative and quantitative methods were used to examine the ecologies of parents' cognitions and behaviours specific to children's diet, physical activity and screen-based behaviours. Results were mapped onto constructs outlined in the FEM.SettingThe study took place in five Head Start centres in a small north-eastern city. The community assessment was part of a larger study to develop and evaluate a family-centred obesity prevention programme for low-income families.SubjectsParticipants included eighty-nine low-income parents/caregivers of children enrolled in Head Start.ResultsParents reported a broad range of factors affecting their parenting cognitions and behaviours. Intrafamilial factors included educational and cultural backgrounds, family size and a lack of social support from partners. Organizational factors included staff stability at key organizations, a lack of service integration and differing school routines. Community factors included social connectedness to neighbours/friends, shared norms around parenting and the availability of safe public housing and play spaces. Policy- and media-related factors included requirements of public assistance programmes, back-to-work policies and children's exposure to food advertisements.ConclusionsBased on these findings, the FEM was refined to create an evidence-based, temporally structured logic model to support and guide family-centred research in childhood obesity prevention.

Objective:Given that parental mental diseases affect the whole family system, a family centered support and help system seems appropriate for families with a mentally ill mother/father. However, the majority of mental health services do not integrate interventions for the family system into psychiatric treatment programs.Aims:To introduce a counselling and support service for families with a mentally ill parent (FIPS) that has been established at a psychiatric hospital serving a large catchments area. Preliminary results of a qualitative study that focused on the clients’ family background as well as on their reasons for utilising the service and service satisfaction will be presented. Methods:Factors that impact the family system are considered and brought to a concept for counselling and support service for families with a mentally ill parent. Problem-focused interviews with 14 clients (mentally ill parents and relatives) of the counselling service for families were subjected to content analysis. Results:Most clients came to the counselling centre because of worries that the parent's mental illness might negatively affect children's well-being. Mentally ill mothers described their daily lives as utterly burdensome and also reported strong feelings of guilt towards their children. The concept of FIPS includes psychoeducation, social therapy, case management and family therapy. Clients assessed the counselling service as helpful and reported some significant changes.

The pre-school period is an important period for children because the stimulation given will have a big influence on their development. It is the family environment that is the starting point for providing stimulation for children. There are still many mothers in Karangharja Village who do not understand that the responsibility of providing stimulation to children is not only the teacher's, but parents must also help. The impact of this is that children's development becomes slower than other children. The service method implements community education by carrying out outreach activities to parents, especially mothers, about the importance of the role of parents in stimulating children's development and what efforts can be made by mothers to create fun learning at home by conducting training activities on making tree learning media read from junk. The result of the service is to make parents aware of the important role in stimulating the development of their children, increasing the development of preschoolers, and increasing children's interest in learning.

Background Social participation provides youths with opportunities to develop their self-concept, friendships, and meaning in life. Youths with cerebral palsy (CP) have been reported to participate more in home-based leisure activities and to have fewer social experiences with friends and others than youths without disabilities. Objective The objective of this study was to identify youth, family, and service determinants of the participation of youths with CP in leisure activities with friends and others who are not family members. Design The study design was a cross-sectional analysis. Methods The participants were 209 youths who were 13 to 21 years old (52% male), had CP, and were classified in Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I to V as well as their parents. The participants were recruited from 7 children's hospitals in 6 different states. Youths completed the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment in structured interviews. Parents completed the Coping Inventory, Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument, Family Environment Scale, Measure of Processes of Care, and demographic and service questionnaires. Researchers determined GMFCS levels. A sequential multiple regression analysis was used to determine the youth, family, and service variables that predicted participation with friends and with others who were not family members. Results Sports and physical function, communication or speech problems, educational program, and the extent to which the desired community recreational activities were obtained explained 45.8% of the variance in the number of activities engaged in with friends. A higher level of parental education explained 6.3% of the variance in the number of activities engaged in with others who were not family members. Limitations The youths' activity preferences and intensity of participation were not examined. Conclusions Youth and service characteristics were determinants of participation with friends but not others who were not family members. The findings have implications for the role of physical therapists in promoting sports and physical and communication abilities and enhancing community opportunities to optimize the social participation of youths with CP.

This article analyzes the role of social workers in developing children's independence in community care homes. The primary goal of a social worker's activity is to provide a suitable service and teach the recipients of their services to solve problems on their own. The children's opportunity to see and grow up in a close family environment depends on the employees' value orientation and worldview. During the deinstitutionalization processes in Lithuania, social workers had to create an environment close to the family and consolidate the family model in communal children's care homes. This article aims to examine how the training and competencies of social workers impact the preparation of children for independent living in society. Applied research methods are analysis of scientific literature and documents, expert interviews, analysis, and interpretation of research results. The review of the scientific literature, presented in the article and the research data, can be applied to improve community care homes providing social services to highlight the role of social workers in creating a safe environment for the child, involving the child in the planning and organization of activities, fostering self-confidence and their abilities.

Major family and social changes over the past 30 years have impacted in new ways on children's health and wellbeing leading to a profound rethink about the kinds of services that are needed. At the same time, second thoughts have emerged about the role of government in service provision, driven by neoliberal and rational economic philosophies as outlined in the paper in this issue by Keleher and Reiger (2004). Together, these issues have challenged the very foundations on which the services were traditionally based.

The recognition that the majority of British children are involved in paid employment at some time before the minimum school leaving age has not been accompanied by comparable analytical advances. Large numbers work in areas beyond those traditionally identified with `children's work' and are to be found in marginal, flexible, service sector jobs, defined by unskilled and low paid manual labour. The efforts of US researchers to link `adolescent work' to child development and socialisation merely pathologises children's involvement in work, while the greater sensitivity of British researchers to the possible connections between work and changes to children's social lives provides only limited insight. It is demonstrated here that children's involvement in work is closely related to employers' increased demand for part-time student labour and that children are making themselves available for work in response to both the changing distribution of family income and the commodification of their leisure time.

Abstract We examined the association between states' legislative mandates that private insurance cover autism services and the health care–related financial burden reported by families of children with autism. Child and family data were drawn from the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs (N = 2,082 children with autism). State policy characteristics were taken from public sources. The 3 outcomes were whether a family had any out-of-pocket health care expenditures during the past year for their child with autism, the expenditure amount, and expenditures as a proportion of family income. We modeled the association between states' autism service mandates and families' financial burden, adjusting for child-, family-, and state-level characteristics. Overall, 78% of families with a child with autism reported having any health care expenditures for their child for the prior 12 months. Among these families, 54% reported expenditures of more than $500, with 34% spending more than 3% of their income. Families living in states that enacted legislation mandating coverage of autism services were 28% less likely to report spending more than $500 for their children's health care costs, net of child and family characteristics. Families living in states that enacted parity legislation mandating coverage of autism services were 29% less likely to report spending more than $500 for their children's health care costs, net of child and family characteristics. This study offers preliminary evidence in support of advocates' arguments that requiring private insurers to cover autism services will reduce families' financial burdens associated with their children's health care expenses.

The presence of children's guests is still often considered a minority by hoteliers. This can be seen from several hotels that have not considered the children's menu and facilities in the form of products or services that provide a sense of comfort and safety. This research is a descriptive quantitative study with a sample of hotels in Bandung and Subang where guests are family. Methods An audit of baseline data identified the referral process as an area for improvement in the service. Quality improvement techniques were used to design and test small cycles of change. Results The results of the audit showed up to 25% of ‘requests for help’ received from various referrers were not appropriate for several reasons, including old forms and incomplete information. Five tests of change were implemented, which had a mixed impact. Conclusions This pilot study can help other multidisciplinary teams who are implementing the care aims approach and looking to improve their referral processes in order to improve access to care.

Abstract Background and Purpose. Federal law mandates family-centered care as the service delivery model in early intervention programs for children from birth to 36 months of age. This study investigated the relationship of therapists' attitudes, children's motor ability, and parenting stress to mothers' perceptions of physical therapists' family-centered behaviors during early intervention. Subjects and Methods. Twenty-five physical therapists and 75 mother-child dyads (3 from each therapist's caseload) participated. The mean chronological age for the children was 21.2 months (SD=7.3, range=6–35). Mothers participated in a structured interview using the Measures of Processes of Care (MPOC-56), and they completed the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF) and a questionnaire. The Bayley-II Motor Scale was administered to the children. Therapists completed a modified version of the Measures of Processes of Care for Service Providers (MPOC-SP) and a questionnaire. Results. Scores for mothers on the MPOC-56 and for therapists on the MPOC-SP indicated strong positive perceptions and attitudes toward family-centered behaviors. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that parenting stress explained a considerable amount of the variance in mothers' perceptions of family-centered behaviors, whereas therapists' attitudes explained a considerable amount of the variance in mothers' perceptions of respectful and supportive care. Children's motor ability was inversely related to parenting stress. Discussion and Conclusion. Findings suggest that mothers perceive that physical therapists are using family-centered behaviors in early intervention. Findings from the questionnaires suggest that some early intervention policies may be barriers for therapists and prevent them from actualizing attitudes toward family-centered behaviors.

170 Background: There has been a national trend towards a family/patient-centered care model in an effort to achieve many goals: earlier discharges, enhanced collaboration and patient safety, and improved satisfaction among medical care teams, patients and families. While most of the services at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) utilized a family-centered rounding model, the hematology/oncology service used table rounds. In December 2017, the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) initiated family-centered rounds (FCR) on the inpatient service. Methods: FCR participants include patient, parent(s), bedside nurse, clinical supervisor, residents, fellow, attending, nurse practitioners, pharmacist, dietitian and child life specialist. One unique aspect of our FCR model is using scheduled rounds, whereby each patient is allotted a specific length of time and each family is given a time range within which to expect the team. Patients are scheduled every 10 minutes and if more time is needed, the attending/fellow return later for discussion. Staying on a schedule allows for improved nursing workflow and for consulting teams and interpreters to join rounds for specific patients. Outcome measures include patient, family and employee satisfaction. Results: Patient satisfaction is measured using NRC Real-time electronic survey. Scores have increased from a baseline of 70% (Oct/Nov 2017) to 87.5% (April 2018) after the initiation of FCR. From a qualitative standpoint, families have expressed gratitude for the new rounding model. Staff have expressed increased satisfaction at the efficiency and thoroughness of communication on rounds and the multidisciplinary team allows for real-time collaboration. Conclusions: FCR have led to increases in patient satisfaction both quantitatively and qualitatively. Ongoing initiatives include adding family-centered night rounds and a more extensive evaluation of FCR’s impact on employee satisfaction, patient safety, length of stay and lower overall costs. We are continuously evaluating the structure and efficacy of FCR to achieve the best possible care for our patients.

Satisfaction of the patient's family with nursing care in the hospital is very important in providing an overall picture of the quality of health services, especially in the children's room. This study aims to determine the Patient's Family Perception of the Satisfaction of Nursing Care Services in the Covid-19 Era in the Children's Room of the Indramayu Hospital. This research is a quantitative research using descriptive method. The population in the study amounted to 265, with a sample of 100 respondents. The results of the study illustrate that 10% of respondents are satisfied with the Nursing Care Service, 7% are satisfied based on the reliability dimension, 21% are satisfied based on the responsiveness dimension, 8% are satisfied based on the assurance dimension, 67% are satisfied based on the empathy dimension, and 39% are satisfied based on the tangible dimension. The results of these studies have not reached the standard according to the Decree of the Minister of Health Number 129/Menkes/SK/II/2008 concerning Minimum Service Standards for Hospitals. For this reason, hospitals can carry out regular evaluations to find out what must be improved and maintained in the services provided so that hospitals can achieve better quality standards by making continuous quality improvements every three months with one month of data collection.
