Seth Vannatta argues that there can be a fruitful synthesis of pragmatism and classical conservatism. In doing this, he focuses the methodological commitments of pragmatism and conservatism. However, I will demonstrate with a reading of Dewey’s Liberalism and Social Action that other commitments might prevent this synthesis—at least a synthesis between the thought of John Dewey and Edmund Burke. My conclusion is that pragmatism and conservativism might travel parallel to one another but that we have good reasons for keeping some separation between the theories based upon their fundamental commitments. Deweyan pragmatism remains tied to democracy; conservatism remains tied to history.

Abstract Introduction: KMT2A (MLL) rearrangements (fusions) is a therapeutic biomarker for Menin inhibitors. KMT2A-PTDs (partial tandem duplications) are considered a prognostic biomarker in myeloid malignancies. KMT2A fusions and PTDs are traditionally detected by RT-qPCR (quantitative real-time PCR). This study investigates KMT2A PTDs levels in healthy donors and myeloid malignancy samples to establish a threshold to report samples with high PTDs, using next generation sequencing (NGS) with OncomineTM Myeloid Assay GX v2. We also report KMT2A fusions in myeloid malignancies. Methods: We sequenced 8483 research samples with known myeloid malignancies at Sonora Quest LaboratoriesTM and at Thermo Fisher ScientificTM. We acquired 20 healthy donor whole blood samples (total 127 replicates) from StanfordTM Blood Center and Discovery Life SciencesTM and sequenced them at 3 different sites of Thermo Fisher ScientificTM. Samples were sequenced with the Ion TorrentTM GenexusTM 6.6 or Ion GeneStudioTM S5 System. They were profiled for 6 different KMT2A-PTD variants and 199 KMT2A fusion isoforms. Results: The mean read length of this data set is 90 - 120 bp and the mean mapped fusion reads is 20,000 - 30,000. KMT2A-PTDs were detected in both healthy donors and myeloid samples. Healthy donor PTD read counts were consistently <2000 and averaged 1/3 of myeloid sample PTD read counts. About 33% of myeloid samples had higher PTD read counts than any healthy donor sample. BLAT (BLAST-Like Alignment Tool) analysis confirmed specific exon matching on the KMT2A gene in both cohorts. Among the 8483 myeloid samples, 162 samples contained a total of 5 unique KMT2A PTDs, and 105 samples contained a total of 30 unique KMT2A fusion isoforms with KMT2A-MLLT1 and KMT2A-MLLT3 being the most prevalent KMT2A fusion gene pairs. Conclusions: We characterize the KMT2A fusions present in myeloid malignant samples. We also describe the abundance of KMT2A PTDs in both healthy donor and myeloid samples, with myeloid cases showing significantly higher PTD read counts. KMT2A PTD read count >2000 is present only in malignant samples but not in healthy donors. This intriguing finding opens opportunities for prospective studies to monitor individuals with elevated PTD levels for myeloid malignancy development and retrospective studies to explore whether healthy donors identified with this alteration years ago after blood donation were subsequently recorded in the national health system with myeloid malignancies.

Edmund Burke was the dominant political thinker of the last quarter of the eighteenth century in England. His reputation depends less on his role as a practising politician than on his ability to set contemporary problems within a wider context of political theory. Above all, he commented on change. He tried to teach lessons about how change should be managed, what limits should not be transgressed, and what should be reverently preserved. Burke’s generation was much in need of advice on these matters. The Industrial Revolution, the American Revolution, and catastrophically, the French Revolution presented challenges of terrible proportions. They could promise paradise or threaten anarchy. Burke was acutely aware of how high the stakes were. The Reflections on the Revolution in France was a dire warning of the consequences that would follow the mismanagement of change.

Sooner or later, our words take on meanings other than we intended. How Words Make Things Happen suggests that the conventional idea of persuasive rhetoric (which assumes a speaker’s control of calculated effects) and the modern idea of literary autonomy (which assumes that “poetry makes nothing happen”) together have produced a misleading account of the relations between words and human action. Words do make things happen. But they cannot be counted on to produce the result they intend. The argument is enriched by examples from speakers and writers of various sorts, with close readings of the quoted passages. Chapter 1 considers the theory of speech acts propounded by J. L. Austin. “Speakers Who Convince Themselves” is the subject of Chapter 2, which interprets two soliloquies by Shakespeare’s characters, two by Milton’s Satan, and a character’s inward meditation in a novel by Henry James. The oratory of Burke and Lincoln comes in for extended treatment in Chapter 3, while Chapter 4 looks at the rival tendencies of moral suasion and aestheticism in the poetry of Yeats and Auden. The final chapter, a cause of controversy when first published in the London Review of Books, supports a policy of unrestricted free speech against contemporary proposals of censorship. Since we cannot know what our own words are going to do, we have no standing to justify the banishment of one set of words in favour of another.

This chapter focuses on Burke's Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful. Philosophical Enquiry takes up the thread of preoccupations that absorbed him throughout his twenties. It begins with an exploration of the classical theory of mixed emotions, focusing on Aristotle's signature categories of pity and terror. It proceeds to elucidate the affective psychology of manners, probing the feeling of exhilaration unleashed by pride and the instinct for subordination based on fear. Challenging the deist assumptions of a number of predecessors, Burke argues for the dependence of moral taste on duty. In the process, he articulates the reliance of ethics on religion, and traces the origins and development of superstition. The work also recapitulates Burke's antipathy to stoicism, along with his response to the leading moralists of the age, above all the writings of Hutcheson, Mandeville, and Berkeley, as well as Dubos, Condillac, Hume, and Smith. Although the Enquiry is not a comprehensive treatise in moral philosophy, it provides access to Burke's theory of human nature as it sets about accounting for uniform features of the mind.

Although an era of prosperity lay ahead for it, the British Caribbean in the mid-eighteenth century seemed to be at a point of crisis. Its sugar was losing its export markets to more productive French colonies, while its smaller islands seemed to be worked out. More territory was urgently needed. This sense of crisis and the need for expansion are themes in the chapter on the West Indies in Edmund and William Burke’s Account of the European Settlements in America of 1757. The Seven Years War enabled the British to seize islands from the French. Conquests retained at the peace of 1763 were limited to the four Ceded Islands, but they set off a speculative scramble for potential new sugar land. Burke’s close friend William Burke and his brother Richard sought to profit from the new conquests in the West Indies by winning public offices in them. Although they failed to make their fortunes, they focused Edmund’s interest on the Caribbean.

This chapter argues that Edmund Burke and Mary Wollstonecraft’s accounts of the French Revolution represent not just two ideological positions but two opposing conceptions of history’s epistemological foundations. For all his emotional rhetoric and his strategic de-rationalisation of the Revolution as a historical accident without causation, Burke’s conception of experience in Reflections on the Revolution is ultimately a regulatory or disciplinary one, producing passive political subjects rather than any kind of agential or self-determining political force. Wollstonecraft’s Historical and Moral View of the French Revolution, on the other hand, sets out to restore deep historical causes to Burke’s passional account of ephemeral revolutionary effects, rejecting the reduction of historical experience to a form of emotional intuitionism. At the same time, Wollstonecraft develops a new, agential understanding of collective experience that allows for the existence of a participatory and dynamic social world. Wollstonecraft’s understanding of historical agency and her counter-sentimental interest in cultivating cognitive (as opposed to instinctive) feelings are critical for understanding the changing role and place of feeling in historical discourse from the late eighteenth century onwards.

Streszczenie:
ABSTRACT The Middle Paleozoic section of the Appalachian Plateau exhibits a mechanical stratigraphy defined by layers that emit seismic energy with unique signatures in response to a strain energy accumulated on time scales associated with local, regional, and plate-scale processes. The Earth is in a state of frictional equilibrium, which means that even small changes in effective stress cause brittle failure and the concomitant release of ambient seismic energy. Stress changes as low as 0.001 MPa, the level of stress changes during Earth tides or the transmission of a fluid pressure wave, can activate failure on critically oriented fractures. These phenomena lead to a release of ambient seismic energy, which can be mapped using seismic emission tomography (SET) methods to image fracture networks emitting coherent seismic waves. We used a buried array of 54 sondes to identify active fracture networks over a contiguous volume of 3.76 km3 within Middle Paleozoic rocks hosting two Marcellus gas shale wells drilled under the Appalachian Plateau of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, USA. We sampled ambient seismic emissions before and after two stimulations and found that the pattern was repeatable. The fracture patterns illuminated by ambient seismic emissions defined a mechanical stratigraphy populated by clouds of seismic activity separated by packages of beds emitting relatively less seismic energy. The unique attribute of the beds emitting less seismic energy is a lower least horizontal stress (Shmin) relative to adjacent mechanical units in the section. These low stress beds include the bottom portion of both the Marcellus and Burket/Geneseo black shales. There are three thicker mechanical units carrying clouds of higher energy emissions. These three units include siltstones of the Brallier above the Burket/Geneseo package, silty shale beds of the Mahantango between the Marcellus and Burket/Geneseo packages, and Silurian-Devonian carbonates below the Marcellus package. In map view, emission patterns in the Brallier follow Alleghanian J2 joints. Patterns in the Mahantango are consistent with slip along columnar joint zones like those cutting upward in outcrops of shale on the Appalachian Plateau. In sum, SET reveals a mechanical stratigraphy based on the release of strain energy from three major units of the Middle Paleozoic section.

This biographical introduction begins with the formation of Catharine Macaulay’s political ideas from when, as Catharine Sawbridge, she lived at the family estate. It follows her through her mature development as the celebrated female historian, to her death in 1791, as Mrs. Macaulay Graham. It notes the influence on her of writings of John Milton, Algernon Sidney, and John Locke as well as other republican works. It covers her marriage to the physician and midwife George Macaulay, and sets out the circumstances which led to the composition, and influence of, her History of England from the Accession of James I (HEAJ). The content of her histories, political philosophy, ethical and educational views, and criticisms of the philosophers David Hume, Thomas Hobbes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Edmund Burke are sketched, and it is argued that her enlightenment radicalism was grounded in Christian eudaimonism, resulting in a form of rational altruism, according to which human happiness depends on the cultivation of the self as a moral individual. It deals with her engagement with individuals in North America before and after the American Revolution, in particular her exchanges with, John Adams, Mercy Otis Warren, Benjamin Rush, and George Washington, and also recounts her contacts with influential players in the French Revolution, in particular, Jacques-Pierre Brissot de Warville and Honoré-Gabriel Riqueti count of Mirabeau. The introduction concludes with her influence on Mary Wollstonecraft and an overview of her mature political philosophy as summarized in her response to Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France.

This chapter draws on the fifth-century BCE uses of philosophos and cognates for two purposes: as corroboration for the coinage meaning set out in Chapter 3 and the connection to Pythagoreans set out in Chapter 4, and as description of the drift in meaning the term underwent across several generations of use. It focuses on six authors, each of whom use the term once: Herodotus, Thucydides, the Hippocratic author of On Ancient Medicine, Gorgias, Aristophanes, and Lysias. Burkert already referred to these authors in his observation that philosophos did not first mean “lacking wisdom” or “spectating the universe.” Treated, however, in their respective literary and rhetorical contexts, they provide significant information about the fifth-century BCE career of the idea of being philosophos. It appears that at the end of that century, the term sometimes loses its wry implication and names a quite specific mode of dialectic exchange about matters of abstract or broad significance.

The slave trade was an essential link in Britain’s system of Atlantic trade. As an MP who specialized in commercial questions, although Burke disliked it, he could hardly have avoided some involvement with it. Two particular instances are discussed in this chapter. As MP for Bristol in 1775, Burke supported his constituents’ objections to the Board of Trade against duties being levied on slave imports into Jamaica with an ostensible aim of controlling the growth of the African population of the island. The duties were disallowed. Between 1772 and 1779 Burke took a close interest in the affairs of the Company of Merchants Trading to Africa, a body set up to facilitate the slave trade through its posts on the African coast. In Parliament he defended the Company against proposals to change its constitution, and he vindicated the conduct both of the London members of the Company’s committee, which included a close family friend, and of the Company’s servants in Africa. In doing so, he implicitly endorsed the Company’s raison d’être, the supply of slaves from Africa, even though he also publicly expressed his unhappiness about the inhumanity of such a trade.

The sulfate ( + )-didemniserinolipid B 3, isolated from the tunicate Didemnum sp, has an intriguing spiroether core. A key step in the synthesis of 3 reported (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 5357) by Steven D. Burke of the University of Wisconsin was the selective ring-closing metathesis of 1 to 2. The diol 6 that was used to prepare the ketal 1 was readily prepared from the inexpensive D-mannitol 4. Many other applications can be envisioned for the enantiomerically-pure diol 6 and for the monoacetate and bis acetate that are precursors to it. To set up the metathesis, the β, γ-unsaturated ketone 10 was needed. To this end, the keto phosphonate derived from the addition of the phosphonate anion 8 to the lactone 7 was condensed with phenyl acetaldehyde 9. The derived enone 10 was a 5:1 mixture of β, γ- and α, β-regioisomers. The diol 6 is C2 -symmetrical, but formation of the ketal 1 dissolved the symmetry, with one terminal vinyl group directed toward the styrene double bond, and the other directed away from it. On exposure to the first generation Grubbs catalyst, ring formation proceeded efficiently, to give 2. Williamson coupling with the serine-derived alcohol 11 then gave 12. To establish the secondary alcohol of 13 and so of 3, the more electron rich alkene of 12 was selectively epoxidized, from the more open face. Diaxial opening with hydride then gave 13. With 13 in hand, another challenge of selectivity emerged. The plan had been to attach the ester-bearing sidechain to 13 using alkene metathesis, then hydrogenate. As the side-chain of 3 contained an additional alkene, this had to be present in masked form. To this end, the α-phenylselenyl ester 14 was prepared. Alkene metathesis with 13 proceeded smoothly, this time using the second generation Grubbs catalyst. The unwanted alkene was then removed by reduction with diimide, and the selenide was oxidized to deliver the α, β-unsaturated ester.

This final chapter concludes the study with another major figure of British art, Joseph Mallord William Turner. Turner’s lifelong ambition to emulate the powers of poetry is shown to have led him to provide one of the most adequate pictorial responses to the challenge initiated by Burke’s Enquiry. After examining the various channels through which eighteenth-century theories of the sublime reached Turner, the argument focuses on his radical transformation of the pictorial medium, as a means to overcome the mimetic limitations of visual representation and articulate the presentation of the unpresentable. His art is understood as the culmination of the reflection about the artistic medium which had been set in motion by the quest for the sublime, and by the growing awareness of inadequacies inherent to mimetic pictorial representation. It may be seen as the place where the aesthetics of the Enquiry were taken to their radical conclusion, leading to a resolute change of paradigms in visual representation.

I set out to explore cinema in terms of its potential function as a medium of the sublime. Burke and Kant’s accounts of the sublime are employed to examine their correlation with cinema’s technological, formal, and receptive repertoire. This encompasses intrinsic features such as cinematography’s innovation of putting in motion photographic images, aspects of the montage, the aesthetic potential of the camera as cinema’s central organ of expression and perception, sound effects, and multimedia interplay as well as external features of cinema which constitute the medium as a concrete space for cinematic experiences. To what extent do these various features provoke, facilitate, mediate, or participate in a sensory and affective overpowering of the viewer?

The U.S. Navy and Allison Engine Company successfully completed a second round of testing which integrated a new Woodward Governor Full Authority Digital Control (FADC) system for gas turbine control and a Redundant Independent Mechanical Start System (RIMSS). This integrated system will be installed on Allison Model AG9140 Ship Service Gas Turbine Generators (SSGTGs) on hull numbers DDG-86 and follow of the U.S. Navy’s Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) class destroyers. The Full Authority Digital Control (FADC) Local Operating Panel (LOCOP) will be a direct replacement of the original AG9140 LOCOP and will control both the Allison 501-K34 gas turbine and the RIMSS unit. RIMSS is a gas turbine powered, mechanically coupled start system for the SSGTGs and is designed to replace the high pressure start air system on DDG-51 class ships. This paper describes the FADC and RIMSS systems and details Phase II testing that was conducted on the AG9140 SSGTG located at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division - Ship Systems Engineering Station (NSWCCD-SSES) DDG-51 Land Based Engineering Site (LBES), Figure 1. The test program embodied the second portion of RIMSS testing which included the addition of the final prototype FADC control system. The test agenda included electric plant operations with the FADC and a second 500 start endurance test of RIMSS. The primary objective of Phase II testing was to evaluate the FADC control system and to further validate engine life predictions for the RIMSS engine.

Abstract This paper summarizes the strategic approach to support operationalization efficiency of technology implementation in PETRONAS Carigali. Technology agenda became one of PETRONAS main focus since 2016. Implementation of new technology allows for improvement in production efficiency and allows company to be competitive. With high number of technology project being introduced, an effective and efficient technology management process is required to ensure optimum resource utilization and to manage technology specific risks. As a wholly owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, PETRONAS Carigali was entrusted to reinforces the strategy for this renewing focus in technology. Since 2018, a dedicated department had been established in PETRONAS Carigali, named Upstream Technology Management (UTM), with intention to facilitate the deployment of technology in Upstream, aligning to PETRONAS Technology Agenda. Fast forward to 2020, UTM was restructured to Technology Excellence (TEX) Unit with the main focus of ensuring compliance to proper process, governance and to support the operationalization efficiency of overall PETRONAS Carigali Technology. At presence, the implementation of technology at PETRONAS Carigali is guided by several frameworks, in which the two main documents are PETRONAS Technology Management System (PTMS) and Upstream Project Management Standard (UPMS). TEX monitors two categories of technologies: in-house produced and off-the-shelf, and they are overseen by two technical approval sittings: Technology Readiness Level Committee (TRLC) and Proprietary License Technology Assessment (PLTA). Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) are a concept used to gauge a technology's level of maturity. According to the projects' progress and the technical standards established, each technology is assessed against a set of criteria before being given a TRL rating. At the same time, risk assessments are conducted using PLTA to determine the HSE hazards and compatibility with the existing process, equipment, and system at the chosen asset or facility. The PLTA is endorsed by relevant discipline Technical Authority and approved by Head of Asset prior to deployment. In this paper, the Burke-Litwin Model was used to assess the present technology management and implementation at PETRONAS Carigali's upstream business to find any potential gaps and areas for improvement. As a result of the assessments, proposed changes to address detected misalignments were put in place to strengthen PETRONAS' internal governance documents. The development of the Technology Deployment Framework is expected to aid overall technology management and implementation across the project life cycle. In conclusion, with the right technology project management approach, field application of technology may be more efficient to deliver result at pace. Others could apply the approaches and lessons learned for similar reasons.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Early Childhood Education in Brazil is now legitimized by the Federal Constitution (BRASIL, 1988) when the Magna Carta discusses the right of children to education, as well as attentive to the duty of the State and the family to comply with this right. To the Law of Guidelines and Bases (BRASIL, 1996), once again Early Childhood Education gains the spotlight when it is defended as the first stage of Basic Education. The 1990s, with those and new achievements, were demarcated with and by the publication of different documents: advisors, curricular, and legislatures. No rights were won without the need for the movement of several groups of society (TELES, 2018). However, one of the most evident movements was that of scholars and researchers in the area of Early Childhood Education who defended/advocated the break with educational care practices and preparation for elementary school, and who discussed the historical dichotomy between daycare centers and kindergartens. With the defense of the dissociability of education and care, it began to understand that Early Childhood Education is a place of care and education and that it aimed/aims at the integral development of children from zero to five years and 11 months, complementing the action of the family and the community (LDB, 1996), being also a place between children's knowledge and knowledge historically constructed by humanity. In this wake, when proposing such a breakup, questions were raised about the ways of organizing curricula for Early Childhood Education, based on a curriculum that holds as centrality the children, their social markers, and their multiple ways of living childhood. These curricula also set the scene for play, social interactions, and languages as axes that structure pedagogical proposals in Early Childhood Education (BRASIL, 2009). To achieve their objectives, the pedagogical proposals of early childhood education institutions must provide conditions for collective work and the organization of materials, spaces, and times In line with the narratives put here, the materialities, which were and are in circulation in the educational units (PERES and SILVA, 2011) enabled/enabled possibilities of representations (CHARTIER, 1991, 1992) on the history of Early Childhood Education in Brazil, through the struggles of representations throughout history. These materialities are capable of being sources and objects of research, from the defenses of cultural history (BURKE, 1991; PESAVENTO, 2003), who maintain that there is a much wider range of sources and objects, moving from the idea that only large "events" would be research objects. It is defended in this summary, that the possibility of taking school culture as a historical object (JULIA, 2001), allowed to outline the circulation, in educational institutions, of material elements (VIÑAO FRAGO, 2008), expanding the circumscription of which there is a school material culture. By marking curricula, objectives, and specific practices for Early Childhood Education, attention is made to the existence of material culture of/for Early Childhood Education, since the break with the school and the schooling conceptions grant us to delimit the material culture that "echoes" aspects of Early Childhood Education, whether analyzed through architecture, toys, of objects, utensils, or even elements of nature.
