Eugene Rabinowitch intended the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to be an institution of scientific internationalism in the early cold war. He hoped that the Bulletin might serve, faute de mieux, as a site of international contact that would allow his vision of the scientific life to contribute to peace and stability in the shadow of the atomic bomb. Domestic anticommunists, however, envisioned the relation of science to national security and the role of the scientist quite differently. Protecting a sense of oneself as a scientist was consequently a feat of endurance, as Rabinowitch’s experience with the Bulletin shows.

In January, 2023, the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock forward to 90 s before midnight, reflecting the growing risk of nuclear war.1 In August, 2022, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the world is now in "a time of nuclear danger not seen since the height of the Cold War.2 The danger has been underlined by growing tensions between many nuclear armed states.1,3 As editors of health and medical journals worldwide, we call on health professionals to alert the public and our leaders to this major danger to public health and the essential life support systems of the planet—and urge action to prevent it.

Rustum Roy recently observed that, operating from a finite number of elements, materials science faces an over-supply problem, too many scientists, and too few elements. Like all Malthusian dilemmas, relief is unlikely within the assumptions. Materials scientists, however, enjoy opportunities to develop new materials through morphological engineering of traditional substances. Carbon, after all, provided a century of progress for polymer chemists and a revolution in the manufacturing world. The trend from atomic- to molecular- to chain-level engineering can obviously be extended to mesostructure engineering and beyond. The tailoring of porosity is an example of such an extension.This issue of the MRS Bulletin examines the concept of engineered porosity from three perspectives. Smith, Hua, and Earl discuss characterization based on classic gas adsorption and more recent NMR and scattering methods. Two articles, one by Harold and Lee, and the other by Fain, look at the pore structure requirements for important applications, reactive separations and gas separation. Finally, the materials science of engineered porosity is discussed in four articles. Even describes emulsion-derived foams in which surface-active species impose micron-scale structure that is retained during polymerization. Shapovalov broadly reviews methods to introduce porosity in metals. Durian discusses recent work on relaxation phenomena in aqueous foams. Finally, I review the factors that control structure in mesoporous aerogels.

AbstractIn the dawn of quantum mechanics, scientists had challenged to formulate the equation of many-electron system, such as atom and solid matter, just after the success of Schrodinger equation to explain a hydrogen atom. It is found, however, that a system of multi-electron requires the self-consistent treatment of exchange interaction stemming from Pauli exclusive principle.In 1930s, Hartree and Fock has derived the equation with use of Slater determinant. It is called Hartree-Fock (HF) equation. This is the equation for many-electron system and if we can solve it, almost exact solution is obtained. However, it was difficult to solve it analytically and numerically. Scientists proposed a variety of approximate theoretical models to solve such many-electron system.Slater has proposed screened-hydrogenic model (SHM) in 1930. Thomas and Fermi have proposed a statistical model, now called Thomas-Fermi (TF) model. These two models have been widely used, modified, extended, and applied to many purposes even now. Their physical image is very simple and useful as comprehensive understanding of the physics. The examples of applications to the equation of state (EOS) for shock compression (shock Hugoniot) are explained here. Such models can be used to single atom (ion) or statistically averaged ion, so-called average ion model (AIM).Even with the atomic data are supplied, the ionization potential depression (IPD) is essential to solve Saha equation of ionization population, especially at high-density plasma. Thanks to a rapid progress of computer capability, even HF equation can be solved numerically in some cases. It is very hard to solve, for example, the band structure of condensed matters. Kohn-Sham proposed density-functional theory (DFT) in 1960s. DFT solves one-electron Schrodinger equation for all electrons in the self-consistent potential. It is proved that the self-consistent potential is formulated as a function of only the density profile.

AbstractEvery new technology is used by us humans almost without hesitation. Usually the military use comes first. Examples from recent history are the use of chemical weapons by Germany in the First World War and of atomic bombs in the Second World War by the US. Now, with the rapid advances in microelectronics over the past few decades, a wave of its application, called digitization, is spreading around the world with barely any control mechanisms. In many areas this has simplified and enriched our lives, but it has also encouraged abuse. The adaptation of legislation to contain the obvious excesses of “digitization” such as hate mail and anonymous threats is lagging behind massively. We hear almost nothing about technology assessment through systematic research; it is demanded at most by a few, usually small groups in civil society, which draw attention to the threats to humankind—future and present—and the Earth's ecosystem. One such group, the Federation of German Scientists (VDW) e.V., in the spirit of the responsibility of science for the peaceful and considered application of the possibilities it creates, asked three of its study groups to jointly organize its 2019 Annual Conference. The study groups “Health in Social Change,” “Education and Digitization,” and “Technology Assessment of Digitization” formulated the following position paper for the 2019 VDW Annual Conference, entitled “Ambivalences of the Digital.”

Abstract Nanotechnology fabrication has become a popular field in the development of advanced and cutting-edge technologies. Deposition processes are industrialized to achieve nano-thin films with absolute control over the film thickness, conformal and uniform film growth over complex structures, and minimal to no defects or pinholes. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) has revealed itself as a possible candidate to achieve these requirements. However, the in-depth understanding of the physical and chemical formation of the thin film is still unfamiliar to reactor designers, engineers and scientists. For the purposes of this study, the interest involves the mechanistic factors of geometry influences, fluid flow, and mass transportation on the heterogeneous chemical reaction process. Through an industrial ALD process recipe, the transitional and recirculation phenomena observed in the Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) thin film process are seen to exert a significant influence on the effective formation and growth of the thin film on the substrate. Topological fluid dynamics are used to analyze the two-dimensional numerical simulations of the backward-facing step (BFS) phenomena and the recirculation flow patterns typically found within a horizontal ALD reactor. Focus is placed on investigating the saddle points in the resulting vortex shedding, eddy distortion and recirculation due to the BFS phenomena. The topological analysis is conducted for symmetrical step heights of 7.5mm and 10 mm respectively. Findings revealed close similarities to experimental studies.

Abstract Superplasticity is an intriguing inelastic process in solid materials with deformation upto several thousand percent. Forming sheet and bulk materials using superplastic forming has become an established manufacturing method in aerospace and lately in other industries. Developing the right constitutive behavior is important not only for modeling the process for manufacturing by engineering mechanicians but for choosing the right composition and processing for material scientists. Such an ideal constitutive equation has been eluding the analysis so far. This paper examines some of the fundamental misgivings about the origin of inelastic process in superplasticity compared to other well known deformation processes. Also an attempt is made to understand the basic characteristics of superplastic inelastic deformation at macroscopic, mesoscopic and atomic levels.

Scientists from a variety of fields have joined forces to study a world so small that it cannot be seen with the naked eye, not even under a light microscope. That is the domain of nanotechnology, the universe of atoms and nanostructures. Anything between 1 and 100 nm in size is generally considered to be within the purview of nanotechnology, despite the occasional disagreement among experts regarding precisely what is included in the nanoscale. That is not the atomic scale and the microscale is still larger. This paper will define nanotechnology and discuss its potential future applications. The application of nanoparticles in one of the mechanical engineering field's most significant uses will also be reviewed. The Vapor Compression Refrigeration System (VCRS) uses nanobased refrigerants to deliver a better, faster cooling process with less power consumption. resulting in the provision of a healthier environment and a more effective system.

Regional-scale lake sediment surveys have been successfully used since the 1970s as a means for reconnaissance geochemical exploration. Lake sediment sampling is typically performed in areas with a lack of streams and an overabundance of small-sized (=5 km across) lakes. Lake sediments are known to have major, minor and trace element concentrations that reflect the local geology. Overall, lake sediment surveys are planned and conducted following four distinct stages: 1) background research, 2) orientation survey, 3) regional survey, and 4) detailed survey. At the Geological Survey of Canada, samples are usually collected from a helicopter with floats. Sample density ranges from 1 sample per 6 - 13 km2. Samples are collected from the centre of the lake using a gravity torpedo sampler which corresponds to a hollow-pipe, butterfly bottom-valved sampler attached by a rope to the helicopter. Collected sediment samples are then placed in labelled bags and left to air dry. Detailed field notes and additional samples (field duplicates), for the purpose of an adequate quality assurance and quality control program, are also taken. Samples are then milled and sent to analytical laboratories for element determination. Commonly used analytical methods include: X-ray fluorescence (XRF), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and -mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), and/or determination of volatile compounds and organic carbon using Loss on Ignition (LOI). Analytical data is first evaluated for quality (contamination, accuracy and precision). Numerous options for the analysis of lake sediment data exist, ranging from simple basic element concentration maps and statistical graphical displays together with summary statistics, to employing multivariate methodologies, and, more recently, using machine learning algorithms. By adopting the set of guidelines and examples presented in this manual, scientific researchers, exploration geologists, geochemists and citizen scientists will be able to directly compare lake sediment datasets from anywhere in Canada.

The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.
