Streszczenie:
Rose windows are of special significance in gothic cathedrals. These are large circular windows. They are also exquisite works of masonry. In terms of their construction, the sectioning of the circle into smaller, equal segments presented a particular challenge. The division of a circle into equal segments or the ratio between the diameter and the circumference was an old mathematical problem, which had practical consequences for architects and masons. Their answers ranged from simple to more complex solutions. Analysis has shown that the segmentation of rosettes was simpler in the early period. It later evolved into more complex segmentation, which was probably also based on anthropometric measuring systems. Perhaps the most complex segmentation of the rosette can be found in the rose windows of the Basilica of Saint Clare and the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, which are presented separately.

The commissioning of the Big Circle Line in Moscow, some sections of which were laid jointly with Chinese underground builders, provided the first experience of interaction with foreign construction contractors on the Moscow Metro. The paper investigates this experience which is of value for the development of such works in the future. The analysis was carried out on the basis of scientific and technical documentation on certain facilities, the progress and results of construction and installation works, and information on other events. The paper describes the facilities where construction and installation works were carried out by joint efforts and shows the peculiarities of interaction between Russian and foreign (Chinese) metro builders on a number of sections of the Big Circle Line of the Moscow Metro. The achieved results are demonstrated by the example of individual underground stations. The study reveals the peculiarities of material and technical support of works on the sections constructed by Chinese construction contractors. The mutual exchange of experience, technologies, and work management practices along with the application of various tunnel boring machines from both countries (Russia and the PRC) has yielded fruitful results, demonstrated the possibility and efficiency of the direct engagement of foreign tunnel builders at Russian sites in close cooperation with their Russian counterparts, and revealed a scheme for rational division of labour, work management, and logistical support of works.

The goal of sustainable construction is to improve the energy efficiency of a building, which today is a challenge for software developers, builders, owners within the constraints of time, cost, provision and resources. Building functional, sustainable, safe, comfortable and easy-to-use buildings will increase consumer demand. The problem of implementing sustainable construction lies in the division of responsibilities and tasks from the relevant specialists. This article explores the role of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in reducing fragmentation among professionals at every stage of construction. The possibility of using a virtual storage of information using BIM is analyzed, which provides easy access to data and their exchange in real time. Thus, BIM provides a professional platform for working in an integrated environment at any stage of the building construction process. When analyzing Russian and foreign sourcesthe prerequisites are being created for the future research required to generate improvements towards sustainable construction.

In the summer of 2021, users on the livestreaming platform Twitch were targeted by a wave of "hate raids," a form of attack that overwhelms a streamer's chatroom with hateful messages, often through the use of bots and automation. Using a mixed-methods approach, we combine a quantitative measurement of attacks across the platform with interviews of streamers and third-party bot developers. We present evidence that confirms that some hate raids were highly-targeted, hate-driven attacks, but we also observe another mode of hate raid similar to networked harassment and specific forms of subcultural trolling. We show that the streamers who self-identify as LGBTQ+ and/or Black were disproportionately targeted and that hate raid messages were most commonly rooted in anti-Black racism and antisemitism. We also document how these attacks elicited rapid community responses in both bolstering reactive moderation and developing proactive mitigations for future attacks. We conclude by discussing how platforms can better prepare for attacks and protect at-risk communities while considering the division of labor between community moderators, tool-builders, and platforms.

Streszczenie:
The article presents the newly discovered archival data relating to the marangoni and lapicide recorded in Trogir’s notarial books between 1420 and 1450 (see the Appendix: Overview of archival records mentioning lapicide and marangoni in Trogir from 1420 to 1450). It also includes few already known data published by Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski, Cvito Fisković and Danko Zelić, as well as those recorded by Ivan Lucić and Pavao Andreis in their Trogir history books (from the 17th century), and the records from the canonical visitation of Bishop Didak Manola. The sources consist of a handful of documents recording the commissions, and a large number of documents through which marangoni and lapicide arranged their private affairs or acted as witnesses. Out of sixty six recorded, thirty four were marangoni. Among these, twenty five were from Trogir and the same can be assumed for six of them whose origin was not mentioned, one was from Šibenik and two from Zadar. The overall number illustrates the need for such craftsmen in contemporary Trogir: the variety of tasks marangoni could perform was extremely wide and ranged from wood carving to the construction of stone buildings. However, it is likely that individual marangoni tended to specialize only in one of these fields. The documents mention twenty seven lapicide, six of which were from Trogir, four of unknown origin, three were mentioned as living in Trogir without an indication of their origin, five were from Venice, three from Dubrovnik, two from Šibenik, and one from Split, Zadar, Adria, Bosnia and Hvar respectively. Through the analysis of the collected information and how it relates to the records about contemporary building projects such as new structures and the remodellings of old ones, the article aims to outline their different roles in the building works in Trogir from 1420 to 1450. The projects of that time included the construction of Dominican monastery in the suburb and the Franciscan one on the mainland. They both were demolished by the citizens attempting to improve the city defence in the early 15th century. During the attack of the Venetian fleet in 1420 numerous buildings were damaged and in need for reparations that often led to their remodelling as well. That was the case with the Benedictine monastery in the town centre and many private houses and especially included the renovation of the Cathedral and the continuation of the building works on it. Following the introduction of Venetian rule to Trogir in 1420, a number of new structures and repair works had to be done in the newly created circumstances the aim of which was the consolidation of Venetian presence. Among these, the most important projects were the construction of a citadel for Venetian military crew, also known as the Kamerlengo, and the remodelling of the municipal palace. The whole new Observant Dominican monastery and the Church of the Holy Cross were constructed as well. The preserved archival data, however, cannot give us the clear answers of all the builders that were employed on those works.Among the recorded marangoni and lapicide, the most capable builders can be identified in two ways: through the contracts for the building of vaults, that is, the construction of vaulted spaces, and through the use of the title of protomagister regardless of whether, as E. Hilje explained, they refer to a builder who is also a designer/an architect or a builder who is simultaneously a foreman/site manager, or even the leading figure/authority chosen by the local craftsmen among themselves. Those master builders knew about the construction, and this knowledge enabled them to take on demanding tasks and roles. On that level, their primary education did not matter: vaults were constructed by both marangoni and lapicide and both of them had the protomagister titles indicating their tasks and roles. An additional criterion should be taken into account when attempting to identify the most capable master builders, that is, the training contracts which imply that the teacher was not only skilled but busy because otherwise he could not have been in a position to train an apprentice during all work phases or provide him with food and lodgings.Among the marangoni and lapicide from Trogir (meaning being born, living and working in that town) there were those who were capable of producing drawings, organizing and managing a building site, carrying out demanding constructions and carving architectural sculpture, but also those who were responsible for the building works considered minor but necessary. The reason for the influx of a large number of craftsmen from other towns – nineteen of them were lapicide, while two out of three marangoni were definitely responsible for demanding constructions in stone – lies in the scope of the building projects in Trogir between 1420 and 1450. Even the meagre preserved records relating to specific commissions demonstrate that out of twenty three newcomers, as many as fourteen had work contracts before they arrived and the same can be suggested for another two. This means that they did not arrive in search of a job but were hired beforehand. Although the priority was always given to local builders, that is, to those who had already worked at Trogir, given that the construction of the Kamerlengo and the remodelling of the municipal palace demanded a large number of builders, they were procured by Venetian officials, while the Observant Dominican monks used their connections in Šibenik and Dubrovnik. Once in Trogir, some master builders accepted other commissions. On the basis of the information about their skills, this article attributes a number of undocumented local works to those masters. At the same time, we do not have enough information about the work of the carpenters and stonemasons native to Trogir, especially the work of the three recorded protomagistri. We have established that the reason for this, both in Trogir and in other towns, was the well-known and widespread (particularly in Trogir) practice of writing internal acknowledgements of debt and confirmations instead of recording contracts in notarial ledgers. Because of this, we have no information about the organization and division of tasks at building sites. Only one document testifies to the fact that the lapicide and marangoni who took on the contracts for the construction of buildings had to guarantee that the building process would be done properly and with a set time frame. This, however, did not mean that they themselves carried out the works; instead, they delegated, supervised, organized and co-ordinated the tasks. Given that we know of no other similar subcontract (most of them were probably internal as well and not recorded in notarial books), it can only be said that apprentices took part in the building projects which were contracted by the masters who were training them. Therefore, the analysis of the collected information does not provide clear answers to the numerous questions regarding the output and authorship of the master builders, some of which were already posed by Lj. Karaman (1933). Instead, it opens up new problems which we have addressed by arguing for a number of hypotheses on the basis of the available information. We have suggested that several master builders remained in Trogir for a longer period of time than the one recorded in the surviving documents, and one should also bear in mind that the preserved sources probably do not contain records about every single stonemason or carpenter who was active in Trogir at the time. The sources illustrate the main reasons lying behind the arrival of builders, stonemasons and carpenters from other towns but also that their place in the hierarchy of contemporary marangoni and lapicide depended on their skills and knowledge. It can be safely assumed that, depending on their abilities, all the builders, stonemasons and carpenters listed in this article took part in the building campaigns and works (taken in its broadest sense) and by doing so, contributed to the construction of building projects in Trogir between 1420 and 1450.

This paper fo cuses on social conflicts in the field of work during the privatization processes in Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia and its successor states, including Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the, often dubious, privatization processes, large industrial complexes and leading socially owned companies were dismantled, broken into pieces and sold or bankrupted. For majority of workers, considered as builders, ?owners? and drivers of the companies during the socialist era, privatization resulted in job loss, impoverishment, and dispossession of ownership and of the opportunity to work at companies they considered as ?their own?. Based on the multiple case studies, I analyse workers? narratives on privatization processes, including the role of workers and unions in those processes. Triangulating the data collected from the factory newspapers, media, available archives and documents, including interviews with (former) workers of three industrial complexes (Rudi Cajavec, Energoinvest and Aluminij), research results show narratives of privatization as theft, powerlessness of workers within these processes, politics of fear, as well as workers? disunity. Research results also show that the strategies and tactics used by political, ethno-national and economic elites to pacify workers? uprising and union actions, resulted in shattering the workers? organized actions, division of workers and union fragmentation.

Lenin is a unique biopolitical phenomenon. Lenin’s body, on the one hand, turns into a political symbol, and the history of the management of Lenin’s corporeality in the literal and figurative (symbolic) sense has been going on for almost 100 years. On theother hand, Lenin, or rather his cultural simulacra (in literature, painting, cinema, sculpture), turn out to be agents (post-agents) controlling the bodies and time of Soviet/Russian citizens. The purpose of the article: to outline the main directions ofthe analysis of the biopolitical potential of Lenin’s physicality. Results: the main contexts within which it is possible to talk about Lenin’s body as a biopolitical technology are identified. On the one hand, Lenin (or rather his mummy) turns out to be a phenomenon of a single case of biopolitical attention. As Jean Baudrillard wrote, the control of life and death, as well as the division into the living and the dead, the manipulation of death is the basis of any power, and further "here, at this outpostof death, power is formed." On the other hand, the representation of Lenin’s physicality in stories for children can be considered as a biopolitical technology that instills correct bodily techniques in young builders of communism.

Based on a detailed analysis of the scientific literature on the problem and the available written sources, materials of archaeological research, scientific and hypothetical reconstruction of urban defensive fortifications of the Slavs of a certain time, as well as the experience of reproduction of the fortifications of medieval Europe in the territory of modern Ukraine, Poland and Denmark, it is suggested to own the evolution of the earthen fortifications of.The author denies the widespread idea about the widespread development in the Ancient Rus in the ninth and thirteenth centuries defence structures, which were a complex timber structure that consisted of a reinforced earth shaft and wooden fortifications of various kinds above it. It is argued that the division of earth shaft structures into "complex" (tree-reinforced) and "simple" (non-reinforced) types are erroneous. According to the author, the reinforcement of earth shafts at the beginning of their erection was never performed. It has been concluded that, first, virtually all earthen shafts and their wooden structures, which functioned for a long time, were not preserved in their original form; second, the fortification builders of that time did not have the proper education to design and construct such structures. In the course of construction, they were guided by their own experience and circumstances; therefore, "complex shaft type structures" are not the product of a single design; they are the result of multiple repairs and remodelling of initially low timber fortifications; thirdly, the complexity of the fortifications was influenced solely by the duration of the active functioning of the monument. The article is accompanied by numerous illustrative material, including the author's reconstructions of the evolution of tree-walled defensive walls and methods of their strengthening at various stages of construction.

Division of work and apology of the order in thomas hobbes and norbert elias Abstract: The article exposes the assertive judgments made by Thomas Hobbes and Norbert Elias concerning the division of labor and its relations with the social order, despite the differences of methods and metrics of the authors in question. From Thomas Hobbes, the demonstration, based on the hypothetical-deductive reasoning of the English philosopher, is gathered from the demonstration that, from the individual, ingrained in society, from the contract that builds the State, the division of labor is divided as one of the ways of establishing the comfort necessary for the maintenance of civil society. From Norbert Elias, one picks up the procedural relation between sociogenesis and psychogenesis that, without opposing individual and society, deals with the formation of the division of labor and individuality as inseparable phenomena peculiar to the civilizing process. The shock of Professor A. M. Shah’s (AMS) demise is fresh in our minds as is his memory as an interactive, alert, productive and disciplined scholar at the ripe age of 89. This article tries to summarise his enormous contribution to the discipline of sociology in India. First, it takes up his path-breaking, analytically sharp mind towards conceptual clarity to match with empirical data that questioned many prevailing assumptions. He put forth the household dimension as the processual dimension of family in India, caste division as a feature of many urban castes, besides hierarchy, which alone was assumed to characterise caste in India. Next, it looks at his brand of work with historical and contemporary empirical perspective in the areas of kinship, marriage, lineage, old age and family policy, religion and sects through his research publications. Next, it describes AMS as a simple and upright person and a dedicated teacher who enjoyed teaching and focused on clarity and understanding without fashionable jargon. His strict but compassionate and no-nonsense approach towards students contributed also to the high status of sociology in the Delhi University. This is followed by his selfless commitment to academic administration in the Delhi University and wider institution-building acumen that benefitted Indian Sociological Society among others.

Eating disorders are a widespread problem for college female athletes. This article builds on this research by collecting survey data from female college track and field athletes at 30 universities. Results find that the division level is not a significant driver of eating disorders. Another significant finding comes from breaking out the pressures into its team-related and social causes. Results find that team-related pressures lead to more vomiting behavior, while social pressures impact dieting. Previous studies which aggregate pressures, rely on one eating disorder, or focus on a single university for their sampling may not reflect these complex relationships. Even after controlling for individual factors, competition level, and team nutritionists, the pressures still impact these athletes. This suggests a need for additional screenings and counselors to address pressures occurring both on and off the track. While difficult to achieve, there needs to be a change in team cultures across all divisions. JEL Classifications: I1, Z2

This work addresses the real-life scheduling problem of a Scottish company that must produce daily schedules for the catching and transportation of large numbers of live chickens. The problem is complex and highly constrained. We show that it can be successfully solved by division into two subproblems and solving each using a separate genetic algorithm (GA). We address the problem of whether this produces locally optimal solutions and how to overcome this. We extend the traditional approach of evolving a “permutation + schedule builder” by concentrating on evolving the schedule builder itself. This results in a unique schedule builder being built for each daily scheduling problem, each individually tailored to deal with the particular features of that problem. This results in a robust, fast, and flexible system that can cope with most of the circumstances imaginable at the factory. We also compare the performance of a GA approach to several other evolutionary methods and show that population-based methods are superior to both hill-climbing and simulated annealing in the quality of solutions produced. Population-based methods also have the distinct advantage of producing multiple, equally fit solutions, which is of particular importance when considering the practical aspects of the problem.

AbstractRegionalization has been a defining feature of European politics since the 1970s. Previous work has studied political drivers of the movements of competences to the subnational level, including the role of citizens’ preferences. Yet, we still know little about how these new divisions of competences between government levels have impacted the development of public opinion about this division. The article builds on the literature on policy feedback and argues that institutional regionalization may both directly and indirectly affect support for regionalization through normative and interpretive effects. To empirically qualify these expectations, the article uses eight cross sections of the Flemish and Walloon populations in Belgium (1991–2019). This approach explains differences in support for regionalization between citizens that were socialized in different institutional and regional contexts. The analyses show that Walloons who came of age in the context of more institutional regionalization tend to be more supportive of regionalization. In Flanders, in contrast, support for regionalization is most consistently and substantially explained by regional and Belgian identification. However, our analyses show no support for the expectation that coming of age in a more regionalized Belgium is associated with a greater sense of regional identification.

The solution of issues arising during the research on the division of residential buildings of old buildings is relevant for the theory and practice of conducting forensic examinations related to the development of options for the division of such real estate, given the uncertainty and contradictions in the data of certain documents (technical, legal) that are provided for research and changes in composition residential real estate in common ownership as a result of certain redevelopment actions, builder stvu, reconstruction. Errors (the results of incorrect calculations, inaccuracies, typos, etc.) allowed during the preparation of technical inventory documents, on the basis of which documents of title to real estate are drawn up, affect the calculations when developing options for the division of residential real estate. During long-term operation, all changes in the composition of households that are made by the co-owners of this property at different time periods, such as changes in the space-planning decisions of objects, engineering and technical equipment, landscaping, etc., must be reflected in the documents submitted for the study, including corrected ideal shares in connection with the improvements in residential real estate of the old buildings. These factors affect the completeness of the study and the formation of expert conclusions about the possible division of the old residential buildings. The analysis of normative and legal documentation was carried out, unified approaches to the research on the division of residential buildings of the old buildings were developed taking into account certain factors that affect the results of the conclusions of this type of expertise.

This study designs a travel recognition and scheduling system using artificial intelligence and image segmentation techniques. To address the problem of low division quality of current point division algorithms, this study proposes a streaming graph division model based on a sliding window (GraphWin), which dynamically adjusts the amount of information (vertex degree information and adjacency information) referenced at each division according to the current division quality and division time by introducing a sliding window mechanism, to achieve the highest possible division while allowing loss of certain division efficiency. The goal is to improve the division quality as much as possible while allowing a certain loss of division efficiency. To meet the user’s need to travel through multiple destinations with the shortest route, this thesis proposes a deep reinforcement learning actor-critic (AC)-based multiobjective point path planning algorithm. The algorithm builds a strategy network and an evaluation network based on actor-critic’s multiobjective point path planning, updates the strategy network and evaluation network parameters using AC optimization training, reduces the reliance of the algorithm model on a large amount of high-quality label data, and speeds up the convergence speed of the deep reinforcement learning algorithm by pretraining, finally completing the multiobjective point access sequential path planning task. Finally, the personalized travel recommendation system is designed and implemented, and the system performance analysis is conducted to clarify the system requirements in terms of functional and nonfunctional aspects: the system architecture, system functional modules, and database tables are designed to conduct use case testing of the main functional modules of the system, and the usability of the attraction recommendation algorithm is verified through the concrete implementation of the functional modules such as attraction recommendation in the system.

What would it mean to construct a post-imperial discipline rather than a ‘post-Western’ one? ‘Post-imperial’ means addressing the ways in which colonial empires divided the world into separate realms of human capability and thought. The binary categories of Western and Eastern, or Western and non-Western, represent one such way of dividing the world according to an imperial imaginary. Rather than merely excluding, these divisions created justifications for local universalisms and power structures. Yet, many anti-Eurocentric scholars now make use of these categories in order to argue for fixed epistemic differences between Western and non-Western populations. Accordingly, I critique the imperial division of the world by drawing on the intellectual trajectories of two thinkers who struggled against empire in the 20th century: WEB Du Bois and Frantz Fanon. Du Bois and Fanon were both aware of how ethnic and cultural foundations for politics could reproduce imperial order, and, therefore, offer potential alternatives to Western/non-Western ontologies. This includes recognising that representations of difference are processual, determined by strategic necessity, and subject to incentives to represent difference within hierarchical institutions. This article builds on recent studies in International Relations and other disciplines to think through the legacies of empire in knowledge production, and to push towards more historical and relational approaches to world political and social inquiry.

Abstract The 1994 film Junior (dir. Ivan Reitman), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the world's first pregnant man, has been the subject of much scholarly debate since its initial release. Specifically, feminist critiques have both called attention to the film's androcentric usurpation of reproduction and lauded its break from more traditional and gendered forms of this labor. The following analysis of Junior and its reception builds on this critical feminist foundation while reconsidering the film's potential as an early blockbuster work that explores alternative modes of queer family-making. This reading draws on the work of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, applying her analytic framework of binaristic formations to the film. In so doing, a series of dyads emerge—feminist/misogynist, feminist/queer, trans/cis, queer/heteronormative, masculine/feminine, passive/active, hard/soft. Navigating these divisions not only offers a more reparative reading of the film, it also produces a fruitful study for addressing the ways in which queerness on-screen so frequently operates through such binary formations. Lastly, new insights regarding the way male pregnancy, as a theme, has historically been depicted in Western film and television are born out of this queer re-reading. By revisiting Junior through this approach, zaniness—as conceptualized by Sianne Ngai—illustrates yet another division where queer modes of family-making reside—the binaristic formation of horror/humor.

The official climate divisions for the contiguous United States are used for a wide range of purposes, including ongoing climate monitoring, and through NOAA’s long-standing nClimDiv dataset. In Colorado, the climate divisions are based around the basins of the large rivers that flow out of the state. However, considering the complex topography and climate of the state, these divisions do not always represent key climate variations and changes. This study builds upon an approach first developed by Wolter and Allured to establish alternate climate divisions that more closely reflect observed climate variability across Colorado. Hierarchical cluster analysis is applied to gridded temperature and precipitation data (NOAA’s nClimGrid) from 1950-2021 to identify areas with similar climate variability, then manual inspection is used to establish 11 divisions. These resulting divisions are being used in an updated state-level climate change assessment. The method is flexible and uses open-source tools that could be extended to other regions or datasets.

This paper builds upon current research into the organizational implications of ‘modularity’. Advocates of modularity argue that the ‘invisible hand’ of markets is reaching activities previously controlled through the visible hand of hierarchies. This paper argues that there are cognitive limits to the extent of division of labour: what kinds of problems firms solve, and how they solve them, set limits to the extent of division of labour, irrespective of the extent of the market. This paper analyses the cognitive limits to the division of labour, relying on an in-depth case study of engineering design activities. On this basis, it explains why coordinating increasingly specialized bodies of knowledge, and increasingly distributed learning processes, requires the presence of knowledge-integrating firms even in the presence of modular products. Such firms, relying on their wide in-house scientific and technological capabilities, have the ‘authority’ to identify, propose and implement solutions to complex problems. In so doing, they coordinate networks of suppliers of both components and specialized competencies.

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of musical mnemonics in improving division skills among sixth-grade students with severe math difficulties. This experiment builds upon previous work in this field to mitigate the replication crisis in special education. A multiple-baseline design (AB) was implemented, consisting of 3-4 baseline sessions followed by 9-12 intervention sessions. The findings reveal that the training produced an immediate and notable impact on the participants' capacity to solve division problems involving 7s and 9s, which were particularly challenging for them prior to the intervention. All four student participants expressed highly positive evaluations of the strategy instruction. While this research is subject to certain limitations, it serves as a valuable option to assist students struggling in math during the early stages of secondary education, to prevent them from falling behind in the critical area of division. Further research is warranted to explore the generalizability of these findings and to address the limitations encountered in this study.

The fixed-point number arithmetic is always the key and difficult point of the computer organization. It is the basic knowledge of the computer organization. Because there are many operation methods of the fixed-point number and the operation process of it is complicated, the fixed-point number arithmetic is not easy for students to learn. The lack of the software to help the students do simulation computation is the biggest problem in the current teaching of the knowledge. To solve the problem, the simulation software of the fixed-point number arithmetic is developed with C++builder. The software is made up of "the fixed-point integer two's complement addition" module, "the fixed-point decimals two's complement addition" module, "the fixed-point integer two's complement subtraction" module, "the fixed-point decimals two's complement subtraction" module, "the sign-magnitude 1-bit multiplication"module, "the Booth's Algorithm"module, "the sign-magnitude two bits multiplication"module, "the two's complement two bits multiplication"module, "the sign-magnitude recovery remainder division"module, "the sign-magnitude unrecovery remainder division"module, "the two's complement unrecovery remainder division"module, etc. In order to test the simulation software, the test case is designed for the fixed-point arithmetic. According to the designed test case, the detailed test is carried out. The test results show that its simulation effect is good. The simulation software realizes the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of the fixed-point number successfully. The CAI (computer-assisted instruction) can be carried out through the software. The software can help the students be familiar with and master the fixed-point number arithmetic rapidly.

I argue that Caillois holds to the idea that play reproduces uncertainty in a safe and confined way but that a paradox troubles this vision and pushes him into a baroque formalism. Instead of a simple relation between model and copy, Caillois develops another, stranger concept of mimesis that continues and extends his Surrealist writing about insects and the unconscious. My reading builds on previous analyses of Caillois within game studies, sociology, and media theory to revise the methodological presuppositions built into the categorization of games.

AbstractThis paper explores the development of tile-stamping in the perioda.d.100–50 by the Gloucester and Cirencester civic authorities, and by private tile-makers in Gloucestershire, and the territorial divisions between them. It argues that builders’ merchants were used in tile distribution and building reclamation and, inter alia, identifies Hucclecote villa as such a site. It proposes that Gloucester tiles stamped just RPG were issued annually and were used for commercial purposes while tiles with magistrates’ names were issued as required, but only for use on public buildings. The evidence suggests that these stamps were subsequently extensively curated. This paper adds nearly 200 new stamps to the existing catalogues and proposes significant revisions to the magistrate dies as a result.

Chinese architecture was for a long time ignored because it was not produced by architects and because it did not follow Western classical expectations, and vernacular architecture was little discussed until the 1960s, and only recently embraced by its own encyclopaedia. Yet the division of labour between drawing architect and practical builder was never wholly advantageous or inevitable, for specialisation of roles can lead to differentiation, inequality, and division, as well as constructional efficiency. Only in the last century has the division between office work and construction site become so complete, resulting in losses as well as gains. Most obviously it has removed design from making, the person with the drawing pen no longer obliged to experience the materials in their weight and texture, or to discover by handling them the best ways to work them. The designer who has never picked up a brick or wielded a chisel can possess little sensibility for the material, but as long as their duties are fulfilled on paper with apparent competence, the process is carried through. On the receiving end, bricklayer or carpenter must produce what drawings demand even when good sense seems lacking, so they carry the work through grumpily without conviction instead of participating in the creative process. This paper looks at oral architecture in the Dong culture, and the way in which buildings have traditionally been produced by carpenters along with the local community, accompanied by shared rituals which reinforce their significance.

Due to the development and application of information technology, a series of modern information technologies represented by 5G, big data, and artificial intelligence are changing rapidly, and people’s requirements for video coding standards have become higher. In the High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, the coding block division is not flexible enough, and the prediction mode is not detailed enough. A new generation of Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standards was born. VVC inherits the hybrid coding framework adopted by HEVC, improves the original technology of each module, introduces a series of new coding technologies, and builds on this greatly improving the coding efficiency. Compared with HEVC, the block division structure of VVC has undergone great changes, retaining the quad-tree (QT) division method and increasing the multi-type tree (MTT) division method, which brings high coding complexity. To reduce the computational complexity of VVC coding block division, a fast decision algorithm for VVC intra-frame coding based on texture characteristics and machine learning is proposed. First, we analyze the characteristics of the CU partition structure decision and then use the texture complexity of the CU partition structure decision to terminate the CU partition process early; for CUs that do not meet the early termination of the partition, use the global sample information, local sample information, and context information. The three-category feature-trained tandem classifier framework predicts the division type of CU. The experimental results show that in the full intra mode, compared with the existing VTM10.0, the encoding output bit rate is increased by 1.36%, and the encoding time is saved by 52.63%.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of farmers’ agricultural production mode transformation, from the perspective of agricultural division of labor and cooperation, on their agricultural production efficiency including technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. Design/methodology/approach This paper analyzes the impact of the agricultural production mode’s transformation on farmers’ agricultural production efficiency, based on the classical theory of division of labor and specialization, transaction costs and cooperation. It uses 2013 survey data from 396 farms in 15 Chinese provinces to explore the contributing factors of agricultural production efficiency using a double selection model (DSM), which can correct the endogenous selection bias in farmers’ decisions. Findings Farmers that participate in agricultural division of labor and cooperation means transform their agricultural production from a traditional self-sufficient mode to one that is specialized and intensive. Agricultural division of labor measured by farmers’ participation in an agricultural division of labor in the production stages, or in agricultural products, and agricultural cooperation measured by farmers’ participation in farmers’ cooperatives significantly and positively influence their agricultural production efficiency after correcting farmers’ endogenous selection bias. Originality/value This paper proposes a unified framework to analyze the impact of farmers’ agricultural production mode transformation on their production efficiency. Further, it builds a DSM for an empirical analysis to avoid the endogenous biases in farmers’ self-selection behavior. This paper also provides ways for policy makers to improve farmers’ agricultural production efficiency from the modern agricultural production perspective.

In addition to testing for the influence of vertical class divisions, it tests for divisions within the dominant classes, and builds on the existing literature through blending Bourdieusian and omnivore theory and incorporating Lamont’s focus on “moral capital.” Hypotheses for relationships between sport and other high culture practices are generated through an historical analysis of sport and neoliberalization from this modified Bourdieusian perspective. Findings generally support the theory. Future research should map changes in the class distribution of sport over time and incorporate class trajectory in analyses.

The division of administrative and planning competencies between the motor-minded enthusiasts around Hitler's road builder Fritz Todt and the railroad lobby in the Ministry of Transport contributed to a contradictory motorisation policy. Not even the design of the German motorways was favourable to commercial road hauliers. The German Autobahn was built primarily for cars and ignored the needs of the trucking industry.

The search for general common principles that unify disciplines is a longstanding challenge for interdisciplinary research. Architecture has always been an interdisciplinary pursuit, combining engineering, art and culture. The rise of biomimetic architecture adds to the interdisciplinary span. We discuss the similarities and differences among human and animal societies in how architecture influences their collective behaviour. We argue that the emergence of a fully biomimetic architecture involves breaking down what we call ‘pernicious dualities’ that have permeated our discourse for decades, artificial divisions between species, between organism and environment, between genotype and phenotype, and in the case of architecture, the supposed duality between the built environment and its builders. We suggest that niche construction theory may serve as a starting point for unifying our thinking across disciplines, taxa and spatial scales. This article builds on the background, growth and development of the National Advertising Division/National Advertising Review Board (NAD/NARB) system, the relationship between government and self-regulation, the standards the NAD/NARB applies to evaluate advertising, and the general performance of the system. A discussion of the case for and against self-regulation assists in supporting recommendations for: (1) consideration of a means to establish a formal NAD/NARB code of advertising practice, (2) improved monitoring of advertisements, (3) increased publicity for the system, and (4) improved enforcement of NAD/NARB decisions.

In the proem of his Bibliotheca historica, Diodorus builds up the ethos of an assiduous reader. Reading anew some parts of the Bibliotheca historica allows to make some hypotheses about his work in libraries and about the bibiographical notes he offers the reader. It also allows to appreciate the way Diodorus makes the division in books and the table of contents and conclusions opening and closing each βίβλος match the requirements related to the book shape. These clues reflect how constantly careful of preserving his text’s integrity the historian is.

Cultural negotiation is essential because the process always involves conflict and differences. Malay-Chinese is one of the minority groups in South Kalimantan. This study aims to find out how Malay-Chinese culture negotiates differences in the legal culture of inheritance distribution between Chinese customary law, Malay custom, and Islamic law. This research is empirical legal research conducted under an interdisciplinary umbrella. This type of research is field research or research, empirical law. In this study, the author uses a legal sociology approach or practical juridical approach, which is an approach that looks at the legal reality in society, and a legal anthropological approach. The research findings show that Malay-Chinese negotiates differences in Islamic values and religion by choosing or combining the two cultural values. The negotiation process is carried out by applying cultural values as they are ethnic and adapt to the cultural values of Malay Islam. This cultural negotiation process then builds a hybrid Malay-Chinese identity. Resistance, their hybridity is used to survive and to fight the dominant Malay Islamic cultural values.

Streszczenie:
This article explores the (de)colonisation of the body and body boundaries in contemporary South African speculative fiction, paying particular attention to award-wining author, Lauren Beukes's, second novel, Zoo City (2010). I will apply Lara Cox's (2018:317) argument that 'Haraway's cyborg resembles the liminal view of identity presented by queer theory, which seeks to blur strict divisions between sexual and gender categories, dissolving binary oppositions such as woman/man and heterosexual/homosexual', to my reading of Zoo City. By centring the novel around Zinzi December, a resident of 'Zoo City' (the marginalised underbelly of Johannesburg), and situating the novel in the cradle of humankind, Beukes reacts against South Africa's colonial history and its colonisation of the body by blurring the animal-human boundary and challenging the colonial construct of body binaries. The novel can be read as a decolonial feminist text as it re-writes South Africa's apartheid history and critiques its division, separation and bodily segregation. Furthermore, I explore how fictional bodies are imagined and constructed in the text; I ask what kinds of boundary-breaking bodies predominate; and consider their thematic, narrative, and political significance in the postapartheid imaginary in relation to speculative fiction. I examine how new boundaries (particularly between 'normative' society and 'Zoo City') are formulated. Zoo City pulls into focus Kristeva's (1982) notion of the abject body as a central to its concerns, while also bringing attention to Foucault's (1992) notion of the 'disciplined' body. It foregrounds questions about the formulation and destabilisation of identity, with a particular focus on the construction of female identity. This article builds on the critical literature on the dystopian post-apartheid state by examining Zoo City's depictions of marginalised people and its construction of the body and body boundaries, as well as by extending the examination of representations of the body in speculative fiction.

The method of observation was used to collect primary empirical materials. On the basis of the structural-functional method the analysis of reportage collection by V. Vladko «Donbass is a golden country» was carried out. The method of generalization allowed to summarize the theoretical provisions of the study and to form a comprehensive vision of ways of artistic realization of industrial themes in the collection of reportages by V. Vladko «Donbass is a golden country».</em></p><p><strong><em>Results. </em></strong><em>The author emphasizes that this genre variety was extremely popular in Soviet journalism in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. In the periodicals of that time, materials appeared more and more often in which journalists paid special attention to describing the labor exploits of Soviet people during industrialization and collectivization campaigns, were interested in the work of factories, and collective farms, and portrayed people’s faith in a better future. Particular attention is paid to their ideological orientation, cultivating the theme of the working class and the industrialization of a new society. It has been found that the reporter aims to describe these processes exclusively as a positive phenomenon. The purpose of our study is to analyze the genre and style features of reporting on production topics. The vision and application of the division of reporting into genre varieties, the characteristics of their identification and typological features are relatively new in the theory and practice of social communication research, which determines the relevance of our study. The article reviews different antitheodicies in response to Toby Betenson’s article “Anti-Theodicy”. Antitheodicies involve rejecting the position that God or meaning exist only, if evils have justifying morally sufficient reasons. The article builds on Betenson’s division into moral and conceptual antitheodicies and his characterization of antitheodicies as a metacritique of the problem of evil. Moral antitheodicies are problematic, as they do not address the key conceptual issues and might end up in question-begging or moralism. Dissolving the problem of evil requires a conceptual antitheodicy that exposes its presuppositions as speculative metaphysics. Religious conceptual antitheodicies help to focus on different ways of sense-making that do not fall into theodicism.

In 1854, Ramji Das, a retired officer from the Collectorate of Delhi penned a small, wonderful work, at the behest of Colonel Hamilton, called Tareekh-o Aasar-e Dehli, introducing to us several typologies of structures focussed partially on the city and the rest in its environs, including villages. He used the structures to highlight three to four important issues. The names of the builders, the purpose of the structures, their present state and the colloquialisms, anecdotes and popular cultures associated with them. The underlying theme of all structures was that they were for the benefit of large numbers of people. The author of this book apprised the readers of the newly created administrative divisions in the geographical region of Delhi. Ramji Das’s work was contemporaneous with Saiyid Ahmad Khan’s second edited version of Asar-us Sanadid, yet it has a relevance, importance and uniqueness of its own. Only one manuscript copy has been located recently, that too after nearly 165 years and it is now a published text in Urdu.

In artistic and stylistic terms, the architecture of Lviv's sacred buildings during the 16th-18th centuries was marked by a variety of appearances. The builders paid great attention to the plastic expressiveness of the building. The facades of sacred buildings were richly decorated, had a clear system of horizontal divisions of cornices and belts, carved in stone with ornamental carvings window frames, and portals of entrances. The role of portals in the decoration of the church ensemble of the Assumption of the Virgin in Lviv is shown. The peculiarities of the use of decorative stone carvings in the plastic design of the facades of sacred buildings during the Renaissance in Lviv are considered on the example of the portals of the Assumption Cathedral, the Chapel of the Three Saints, and the bell tower. The compositional and stylistic features of the Renaissance portals of the temple ensemble are analyzed. In order to physically preserve unique portals, outstanding works of art, and architecture, comprehensive measures for their restoration are outlined.

AbstractThis article argues for the importance of including the construction of informal housing in histories of the African built environment. It examines the proliferation of illegally built masonry houses in the unplanned, predominately African neighborhoods of Lourenço Marques (today's Maputo) during the last years of Portuguese rule. Officials tolerated reed construction in these neighborhoods, but they saw unauthorized permanent construction there as an obstacle to the expansion of the formalized, predominately European city core. These ‘modern’ masonry houses, however, embodied some of the highest aspirations of their builders – aspirations that increasingly overlapped with those of lower-income whites that lived in such close proximity. Racial politics was manifested as material politics as clandestine construction challenged the divisions that had long defined the city. Informal housing thus helps to illuminate some of the peculiarities of race in urban lusophone Africa during the last years of colonial rule, a period usually understood in terms of wars for independence, but that in cities were also years of surging economies and the rising expectations of many African workers.

The real estate industry serves as a catch-all for addressing a nation's housing and infrastructural needs. It significantly improves five sub-divisions, including dwellings, infrastructure, shopping, lodging, and business. As a common practice across the nation, the real estate industry lacked professionalism, uniformity, and consumer protection. A new era in the Indian real estate industry has been assured with the introduction of the Real Estate Regulator Bill (RERA), which was approved by the Indian Parliament in March 2016. This measure, which was approved by the Indian parliament, creates a more open, accountable, and reliable framework for the construction industry, with a primary focus on the real estate market for selling and buying homes. The newly implemented Goods and Services Tax (GST) also introduced tremendous changes in the Real Estate Market. This made Real Estate Market slow in its Initial Stages which left Builders and Contractors to stay away from the Business for a particular period of time, to confront themselves with the new laws and the new taxation system

International relations scholars have tended to focus on realism's common features rather than exploring potential differences. Realists do share certain assumptions and are often treated as a group, but such a broad grouping obscures systematic divisions within realist theory. Recently, some analysts have argued that it is necessary to differentiate within realism. This article builds on this line of argument. The potential, and need, to divide realism on the basis of divergent assumptions has so far been overlooked. In this article I argue that realism can be split into two competing branches by revealing latent divisions regarding a series of assumptions about state behavior. The first branch is Kenneth Waltz's well-known neorealist theory; a second branch, termed here “postclassical realism,” has yet to be delineated as a major alternative but corresponds with a number of realist analyses that cohere with one another and are incompatible with Waltzian neorealism.
