Streszczenie:
In this study, the effects of various agricultural LED lights (LED NN), including single red LED (R), single blue LED (B), and four combinations of blue, red, and warm white (W) LED (BR, BRW1, BRW2, BRW3) on the growth and development of C. militaris (Link.) Fries were evaluated in vitro. After 7 days, samples subjected to LED NN showed shorter sporocarp sprouting time and higher sprouting ratio than the control, which was subjected to T5 fluorescent light. After 2 months, LED lights with high red ratio, such as single red LED and LED BR, had suppressing effect on the growth and development of C. militaris (Link.) Fries. On the other hand, combinations of red, blue, and warm white such as LED BRW1, LED BRW2, and LED BRW3 had the positive impact on the growth and development of this fungus. Notably, samples subjected to LED BRW2 reached 5.79 cm in height, fresh biomass of 3.67 g/20 samples. Cordycepin and Adenosine levels were 64.2 and 6.37 mg/100 g fresh mass, respectively. All of studied indicators were the higher compared to those of the control and other LED lighting schemes. Therefore, it can be conlcuded that LED lighting combination with BRW2 ratio of 1:5:1 and luminous intensity of 45±2 µmol.m-2.s-1 (511,59 Lux) was suitable for the growth and development of C. militaris (Link.) Friesand a potential replacement of fluorescent light for C. militaris (Link.) Friesin vitro propagation.

Streszczenie:
Basalt rockwool wastes with large output, which are toxic and require expensive environmental treatment, are produced during the production of rock wool. Hence, it is urgent to find an effective method to reuse these materials. In this study, polyaniline (PANI)-coated basalt rockwool wastes (BRWs) were prepared as fillers to serve in coatings for the anticorrosion study. Results show that the PANI-coated BRW (PANI@BRW) had enhanced dispersion stability in several conventional solvents and improved the anticorrosion performance of the epoxy resin coating. A high protection efficiency of 97.7% could be obtained from the coating with 5% fillers after immersion for 30 days. This study not only provides a promising method of solving the issues caused by BRW, but also turns these wastes into valuable substances.

Recently, LED lighting technology has been developed fast and strongly. It has been widely used in many new fields. LEDs have been tested as an artificial light source during micropagation and tissue culture of various plants species as an alternative to traditional light sources to save energy and improve the efficiency of the culture process. In this study, effects of LED light at different wavelengths and luminous intensities on growth of Anoectochilus roxburghii's buds in vitro were investigated. Anoectochilus's buds were cultured under the different light conditions, such as LED in monochromatic red (R), LED in monochromatic green (B) , LED in the green and red light combining with warm white light (W) in different ratios (BRW 1, BRW2, BRW3 and BR). After 3 months of culture, the results showed LED B at strong luminous intensity (79 ± 3 μmol.m-2.s-1) inhibited the growth and development of Anoectochilus roxburghii. In contrast, BR LED with low luminous intensity (30 ± 1μmol.m-2.s-1) had made a positive effect on growth and development of Anoectochilus roxburghii. The plant height (5,88 cm), root length (1,33 cm), fresh plant weight (0,169 g/plant), leaf area (0,82 cm2), fresh leaf weight (18,33 mg/leaves) of plants in vitro were found higher than those of plants grown under T5 fluorescent lighting conditions (as control). Besides, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll content of leaves (285,40 µg/g, 196,40 µg/g, 481,80 µg/g respectively) were higher than in the control and other versions of LED combine. The results also showed that the LED light with combined ratio of BR = 1: 4 at luminous intensity of 30 μmol.m-2.s-1 were suitable for the growth of Anoectochilus roxburghii. Therefore, BR LED (1:4) light condition should be replaced fluorescent light sources in vitro culture of Anoectochilus roxburghii in future.

Brown rice traits are critical to both grain yield and quality. In the present study, the chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) population derived from a cross between japonica Koshihikari and indica Nona Bokra was used to analyze the brown rice length (BRL), brown rice width (BRW), length–width ratio of brown rice (BLWR), brown rice thickness (BRT), brown rice perimeter (BRP), brown rice area (BRA), thousand-grain weight of brown rice (BRGW), brown rice ratio (BRR), taste value of brown rice (BTV), and water content of brown rice (BWC). Correlations analysis showed that most of the brown rice traits had significant correlations with each other, except for BRR, BTV, and BWC. A total of sixty-one QTLs for these traits were identified under three environments, which mapped to chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12, with the LOD ranging from 2.52 to 16.68 and accounting for 2.60 to 25.38% of the total phenotypic variations. Moreover, thirty pairs of epistatic interactions for BRL, BRW, BLWR, BRP, and BRA were estimated and distributed on all chromosomes except 10. These findings will provide a further understanding of the genetic basis of brown rice traits and facilitate the genetic improvement of rice yield and quality through breeding.

Recently, a new trend called cold brewing gained popularity in the tea and coffee beverage industry. Cold brew and hot brew black tea may have different sensory qualities and antioxidant levels because of their polyphenolic properties and brewing processes. The objectives of this study were to determine antioxidant properties and polyphenolic content of commercial brands of cold brew and hot brew black tea. The total phenolic content of the cold brew tea was determined to be 0.19 mg/mL gallic acid equivalents/100 g and hot brew tea was 0.43 mg/mL gallic acid equivalents/100 g when assayed by Folin-Ciocalteu’s reagent method. The total flavonoid content of the cold brew tea was 0.40 mg/mL catechin equivalents/100 g and hot brew was 1.01 mg/mL catechin equivalents/100 g. Moreover, antioxidant capacity of cold brew and hot brew black tea was analyzed where their ability to scavenge DPPH radicals was 86.3% and 88.1% respectively. There was a significant difference in total phenolic content between hot brew and cold brew (p = 0.004). Similarly, there was a significant difference in total flavonoid between cold brew and hot brew (p = 0.004). Additionally, there was a significant difference in DPPH scavenging activity between cold brew and hot brew (p = 0.016). Overall, it can be concluded that although cold brew tea contained a lower amount of phenolics and flavonoids as compared to hot brew tea, they both were able to scavenge DPPH radicals in nearly same capacity.

Objective: To determine whether Endotine-assisted endoscopic brow lift with concomitant upper lid blepharoplasty provides long-term brow elevation. Methods: Pre- and post-operative photographs from 35 patients who underwent endoscopic brow lift using Endotine Forehead 3 mm implants with concomitant upper lid blepharoplasty were measured to determine changes in brow height with surgery and up to 55 months post-operatively. Photographs of 20 control subjects who did not undergo periorbital surgery and 11 control subjects who underwent upper blepharoplasty without brow lifting were also measured to provide a basis for comparison. Emotrics software was used to perform automated brow height measurements in order to determine elevation and longevity achieved with endoscopic brow lifting in conjunction with upper lid blepharoplasty. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in brow height post-operatively, averaging 1.6 mm ( P < .0001, 95% confidence interval 0.95-2.18 mm). Fifty-four percent of patients had follow-up beyond 6 months post-operatively and 40% had follow-up beyond 1 year. Elevation remained stable over time with no statistically significant change across all serial post-operative visits. There was no statistically significant difference in brow elevation based on gender or age, or between right and left sides. Conclusion: Endotine-assisted endoscopic brow lift in conjunction with upper lid blepharoplasty provides modest brow elevation and long-term brow fixation as demonstrated by stable post-operative brow height measurements for up to 55 months.

Abstract Background Many techniques have been presented for fixation during endoscopic brow lift, but no singular technique has become dominant. Objectives The authors described a technique for fixation for endoscopic brow lift that is inexpensive, easy to use, and versatile and has minimal morbidity. Methods The charts of 284 patients who underwent the K-wire fixation technique between December 1996 and September 2018 were reviewed. This technique employs a transcutaneous K-wire to hold the brow in position until tissue adhesion creates a lasting elevation of the brow. Results A total of 284 patients underwent K-wire fixation for endoscopic brow lifting. Two patients had hematomas and 5 patients (1.8%) required a second unilateral brow lift procedure. Long-term elevation of the brow was maintained in all patients. Conclusions K-wire fixation for endoscopic brow lift is a simple, safe, and effective technique for fixation during endoscopic brow lifting that provides long-term aesthetic results. Cold brew coffee is a brewing method that is increasing in prevalence. While it has been anecdotally suggested that this method may provide a more aromatic and flavourful coffee product, there is little research published that looks at the concentration of caffeine or other coffee substituents in cold brew coffee. The potential alteration in chemical composition in cold brew provides a few interesting avenues for research. Can caffeine in cold brew be quantified by conventional methods? If so, how does the caffeine profile of cold brews relate to hot brew methods? Here we report the caffeine content and variability in small batch cold brew coffee and show that HPLC/UV-Vis, a standard method for quantitation of caffeine in other extraction methods, is useful for detection of caffeine in cold brew coffee. The mean concentration of caffeine in an average 355 mL serving was found to be 207.22 ± 39.17 mg over five distinct batches of cold brew coffee concentrate. Cold brew preparation methods produce similar quantities of caffeine as hot brew preparation, yet may have increased storage capabilities including improved retention of flavonoids and other secondary metabolites. Therefore, cold brew may provide utility in clinical trials examining caffeine and the effect of other components of coffee as it is commonly consumed.

I now combine the physical layering of art materials with layers of personal meaning as well. My work has an autobiographical theme which I have interpreted through the filter of my sense of humor. Streszczenie:
This thesis considers Herman Melville's Moby-Dick as a textual strategy of possible, alternative models of reading, as well as a text in itself. I approach the text as a drama of interpretations and argue that the individual consciousnesses of different interpreters represent different interpretive strategies, and that these differences suggest distinct structures of community. This approach becomes more focussed in the discussion of Ahab and Ishmael as representatives of two contrasting interpretive possibilities, of "reading" the text as a "pasteboard mask" which conceals a stable identity and single "truth," versus "reading" the text of the "defaced" and hence indeterminate surface of changing "meanings." Each strategy implies a different way of conceiving "space" as the "place" where community is formed, and though critics frequently perceive the ending of Moby-Dick as a paradoxical conflict between these two visionary quests, I suggest that Ishmael's survival presents a possible resolution, where Moby Dick becomes the narrative of filling space with many narratives to create the text Moby-Dick.

The effect of regime type on conflict onset is a well-studied phenomenon, and various studies have found that variance in regime type, and within regime types, affects conflict onset. For instance, militarization in autocracies seems to be linked with increased risk of initiating conflict. However, even in the studies that disaggregate types of autocracies, the categorizations are relatively shallow. This thesis aims to create a definition of military dictatorships which captures their complexity more fully, to determine whether militarization truly does increase the risk of conflict onset. Military dictatorships are here defined as a state that achieves and maintains power through threat or actual use of force, is outwardly or effectively controlled by military officers, and places high value on maintaining a powerful armed force to protect constitutional and territorial integrity. The method used is a logistic regression, where the independent variable is military dictatorship, and the dependent variable is directed dyads. The results show that when a state is a military dictatorship, the log odds of it initiating conflict is 0.73; military dictatorships are indeed more likely to initiate conflict than autocracies in general.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the theoretical premises of and ways that macro deliberative approaches to decision making function in application to specific instances of science and technology governance. Macro-level deliberations constitute complex, extended, distributed decision making processes, in contrast to individual micro deliberation exercises undertaken in particular settings. Macro deliberations employ the mechanism of ‘division of labour' in terms of actors, tasks and methods in order to secure the two essential qualities of ‘inclusiveness' and ‘deliberativeness' – thus resolving the inherent tension between number of participants and deep discussion. Accordingly, the thesis focuses on the ways in which this paradoxical mechanism of ‘inclusion by division' functions in macro deliberations. An interrogation of two UK nationwide public deliberation cases – GM Dialogue (on GM crops) and the CoRWM process (on radioactive waste) – sheds light on the significant role of reflexivity in such macro deliberative approaches to decision making. The thesis adopts a triangulated approach towards both documents and interviews employing contending representations to cross-check the one with the other. In considering the ways in which reflexivity constitutes a critical quality of the process and outcome of division of labour in macro deliberations, the thesis argues that the notion of reflexivity is central to explaining how macro deliberation functions: The reflective and self-contingent feature of reflexivity enables participants to explore diverse rationales on division of labour through continuous generation of new rationales; this recursive self-reconfiguration process of rationales on division of labour entails an evolutionary development of division of labour. As division of labour is played out not in a static, exogenous fashion, but through a dynamic, endogenous construction process, reflexivity in real-world macro deliberations illuminates some significant contrasts in the ways that ‘deliberation' and ‘inclusion' take place to those characterised in theory. Indeed, deliberation emerges in practice as more than just open rational dialogue. In order to understand this more fully, it must be seen in terms of diversity of material, social and political interactions, and relationships – referred to here as ‘discursive relations'. In reality, then, inclusion occurs in more emergent ways than intended by design, rather, unfolding as participants engage with each other. In this way, actors' divergent views are cross-reflected and mutually influence each other, not through theoretically-envisaged top-down aggregation but via a kind of endogenous ‘fermentation' process. In this way, reflexivity actually makes macro public deliberation a more effectively inclusive and deliberative decision making process. In short, recognition of this inherent reflexivity in macro deliberations offers practically to aid improved understanding of the complex process of engagement in science and technology governance. It suggests that we would benefit from shifting our attention somewhat away from the direct provision of strictly prescriptive design protocols towards the construction of better general environments for facilitating more reflexivity, which should enable actors to shape their own reflexive deliberation. Then let them brew!

Streszczenie:
In recent years the 6.67 GHz masing transition of CH3OH has proven to be a superior tracer of massive star formation (see Minier 2001). Maser sites often occur in proximity to UCHII regions, however, up to 75 per cent of sites have no detectable radio counterpart (Walsh 1998) and are instead hypothesised to trace the less evolved 'hot molecular core' phase of stellar evolution. This has been confirmed for a only handful of well known sources (e.g., Cesaroni 1994). Presented here are the results of multi-species molecular line observations towards warm, dusty clumps, undertaken with the goal of investigating the relationship between hot cores, UCHII regions and CH3OH masers. Data from the 22-m Mopra telescope is used extensively in this thesis and substantial efforts were made to calibrate the brightness temperature scale. Measurements conducted on SiO masers and planets show that the beam pattern is divided into a Gaussian main beam plus an inner error lobe, which in 2004 contained 1/3 of the power in the main beam. Full-width half-maximum beam sizes were measured from the data and the beam efficiencies were derived for the years 2000-2004. A 3-mm wavelength molecular line survey was conducted, using Mopra, towards 83 massive star-forming clumps associated with CH3OH masers. Emission from the transitions 13CO (1-0), N2H+ (1-0), HCO+ (1-0), HCN (1-0) and HNC (1-0) was detected towards 82 sources (99 per cent), while CH3OH emission was detected towards 78 sources (94 per cent). The warm gas tracer CH3CN was observed specifically to search for hot core chemistry, and was detected towards 58 sources (70 per cent), confirming that CH3OH masers are excellent tracers of hot cores. CH3CN is found to be brighter and more commonly detected towards masers associated with UCHII regions compared to 'isolated' masers. That CH3CN is detected towards isolated maser sources strongly suggests that these objects are internally heated. The molecular line data have been used to derive rotational temperatures and chemical abundances in the clumps and these properties have been compared between sub-samples associated with different indicators of evolution. In particular, CH3OH is found to be brighter and more abundant in UCHII regions and in sources with detected CH3CN, and may constitute a crude molecular clock in single dish observations. Gas-kinematics were analysed via asymmetries in the HCO+ line profiles. Approximately equal numbers of red and blue-skewed profiles, indicative of inward or outward motions, respectively, are found among all classes of object. Bolometric luminosities were derived via greybody fits to the sub-millimetre and mid-infrared spectral energy distributions, and an empirical gas-mass to luminosity relation of L proportional to M^0.68 was fit to the sample. This is a considerably shallower power law than L proportional to M^3 for massive main-sequence stars. In the mid-infrared, 12 sources were identified as 'infrared dark clouds' (IRDCs). Such objects have been hypothesised as precursors to the hot core phase of evolution, however, we find these sources have greater linewidths and rotational temperatures than the bulk of the sample, and one contains an embedded HII region The filamentary star forming region NGC3576 was also investigated via a molecular line and 23 GHz continuum mapping survey, utilising the ATCA, Mopra and Tidbinbilla telescopes. The results of these observations provide detailed information on the morphology, masses, kinematics, and physical and chemical conditions along the cloud. Analysis of NH3 data has revealed that the temperature and linewidth gradients exist in the western arm of the filament. Values are highest near to the central HII region, indicating that the embedded cluster of young stars is influencing the conditions in the bulk of the gas. Six new H2O masers were detected in the arms of the filament, all associated with clumps of NH3 emission. Star formation is clearly underway, however, clump masses range from 1 to 128 solar masses, possibly too low to harbour very massive stars. The lack of detected 23 GHz continuum emission in the arms supports this assertion.

Streszczenie:
Bragg reflection waveguides (BRWs), consisting of a guiding layer (core) surrounded by periodic media (claddings), exhibit a unique dispersion relation, resulting in a forbidden and allowed band structure.1 We recently proposed a novel directional coupler consisting of two such BRWs in close proximity.2 Here we analyze the coupling properties of the BRW directional coupler. To obtain the modal profiles of the proposed structure, we first derive its characteristic equation and solve for the propagation constant β± for the two fundamental modes. Proceeding with a perturbation analysis we find an explicit analytic expression for the coupling constant κ . The coupling constant decreases exponentially with the separation of the guides (similar to that of conventional couplers), with a decay constant characteristic of the dispersion relation of the periodic medium in the coupling region. Comparing the expression for κ in a conventional directional coupler to the one we derived, we find some novel properties: (i) The effective width of the core (accounted by the Goos-Haenschen shift) may be smaller than the physical width; (ii) for the same core separation the coupling constant is much larger; this can be viewed as effective shrinking of the optical path by the periodic coupling section; and (iii) since the decay constant is a function of both refractive indices of the periodic medium, the coupling constant may be tuned electrooptically or even detuned (with consequent destruction of the confined guiding).

Streszczenie:
In generating high electroosmotic flows for use in microfluidic pumps, a limiting factor is faradaic reactions which appear at high electric fields. These reactions lead to higher power consumption and bubble generation at the electrodes. We are proposing a novel technique that can limit and even prevent gas generation. This will extend the current range of operation of electroosmotic pumps. This is achieved by applying a unidirectional pulsed DC voltage waveform. The optimum pulse voltage waveform (OPW) tested is based on a theoretical model developed by the authors [1]. The power consumed and the efficiency of an electroosmotic pump under the pulsed DC voltage is measured experimentally and compared with the conventional bipolar rectangular voltage waveform (BRW). Results show an increase in the efficiency for the OPW when compared to the BRW. This increase in efficiency is obtained by preventing the reverse cycle in the BRW which flows against the pumping direction.
