Blood Brothers as a media project works as a diptych. There are two – seemingly identical – pieces of the project that must both be experienced to understand the project as a whole. The first piece of the project is the linear documentary. This part captures the experience as it exists in the past. It exists as a master copy of the original story of mine and my foster brother’s relationship. This version of the story will always exist in the past. The second part is the live-cinema documentary performance. In this version of the story, my foster brother and I are no longer only images on a screen; we are living, breathing, and emotional subjects in the present. Our presence alters how the audience consumes the material.

A través de los años (largas décadas) los productos melodramáticos han evolucionado y se han adaptado a los nuevos medios, como la Internet y antes, la televisión. El melodrama ha dado un salto grande desde los cuentos (expresión oral) hasta las tecnologías actuales, y por eso ha sabido sobrevivir y recoger fieles espectadores que buscan una película, una novela, una telenovela o una teleserie con la cual identificarse y sentirse acompañados.

The Brothers Karamazov was the last novel of Dostoievski and for that reason is in way a sort of synthesis of his thinking. In the article there is a brief development of some key ideas as these: in matter of guilt, the attitude has more importance than action; everyone is guilty of everything before the eyes of everyone (universal guilt); suffering purifies the individual and acts as a remedy that promotes his spiritual elevation; freewill is central in human existence. But the novel is also a novel about a crime. Somebody is murdered and the readers will discover the perpetrator at the very end. 25% of the novel is devoted to technical legal matters: the instruction of the summary and the court trial. But what is most interesting is that an innocent is found guilty, because law had no other choice having into account the facts that are backed by evidence. It would be possible to find him not guilty, but for doing so it would be necessary to change the paradigm that is the backbone of modern criminal law.
Los hermanos Karamazov fue la última obra de Dostoievski, por lo que se convierte en una especie de síntesis de su pensamiento. En el artículo se abordan algunas de las ideas clave del autor, como que en materia de culpa, la actitud es más importante que la acción; que todos somos culpables de todo ante todos; que el dolor purifica y es como un remedio para la elevación espiritual del individuo; así como la reivindicación del libre albedrío. Pero la novela es también la historia de un crimen. El autor nos introduce en el misterio de una muerte, cuyo autor descubriremos al final. También contiene un 25% dedicado a la instrucción del proceso y al juicio oral. Pero lo más interesante es que un inocente es declarado culpable y es declarado culpable porque el derecho no podría obrar de otra manera tal como son presentados los hechos. Sería posible declararlo no culpable, pero para ello tendríamos que inventar otro paradigma del proceso penal.

This thesis puts forth the premise that the ideas of the Russian director Meyerhold correlate to the ideas of the Greek philosopher Plato. The writer shows that Meyerhold was a theatrical innovator in the sense that he gave Platonic thought a fresh reflection, expressing as he did his philosophic beliefs by means of the medium of the plastic arts and the stage; dialogue, scenic design, lighting techniques, etc., as opposed to the pure philosophic dialogues Plato used. Meyerhold's theatrical contributions arose from an attempt to resolve opposites, often by the creation of paradox, in order to provide the audience with at least a glimpse of a new world view. The writer uses the writings of Plato, and the writings and examples of the staged productions of Meyerhold to prove the aforementioned premise. Using Meyerhold's theory of uslovnyi theatre and Plato's Theory of Ideas, the writer shows that Meyerhold's work, his theatrical innovations, gave dramatic life to Platonic epistemology.

Together with their wives Otto and Richard Schomburgk arrived in Port Adelaide (South Australia) on August 16th 1849. The essay looks at how these two brothers, who had received their scientific training and promotion in the circle surrounding Alexander von Humboldt, reacted to the unfamiliar conditions in the young British colony. Some indication will be given as to the differences between the Schomburgk brothers treatment of the natural resources of the new colony and that of the English colonists of the time.
Otto und Richard Schomburgk erreichten zusammen mit ihren Frauen Port Adelaide (Südaustralien) am 6. August 1849. Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, wie die Brüder, die ihre wissenschaftliche Ausbildung und Förderung im Umkreis von Alexander von Humboldt erhalten haben, auf die unbekannten klimatischen Bedingungen in der noch jungen englischen Kolonie reagierten. This diploma thesis is focused on unconventional monetary policy tools that individual central banks introduced into practise as a response to the global financial crisis. It is about quantitative easing policy, foreign exchange interventions with exchange rate commitment and negative interest rates. This thesis also deals with classical tools of monetary policy such as open market operations, discount tools, minimum requirement reserve or foreign exchange interventions. The aim of the thesis is to document the development of central banks policy and then to examine relationship of selected assets in comparison with balance sheet of Federal reserve systems with help of correlation coefficient. This thesis examines the world of enslaved men in the antebellum southern United States. Using oral interviews conducted with formerly enslaved people, full-length slave autobiographies, as well as enslaved folklore, plantation records, trial papers, and petitions, it underscores that the lives of enslaved men were intertwined with one another, and that male interdependence was a fact of enslaved life. It examines how pursuits such as drinking, gambling, wrestling, hunting, and evading the patrol gangs brought enslaved men together in an all-male subculture through which they constructed their own independent notions of masculinity, friendship, solidarity and resistance. The thesis argues that homosocial company was integral to the gendered identity and self-esteem of enslaved men. The emotional landscape they created with other men offered them a vital mutual support network through which to resist the dehumanising features of enslaved life. Through each other, they forged an oppositional masculine culture that defied and subverted the authority of the slaveholder that structured their everyday lives. Despite the controls designed to locate the enslaved in plantation space, enslaved men illicitly left plantations at night, evaded patrol gangs, engaged in theft, and spread news, gossip and rumours from plantation to plantation across the South. Evidence indicates that this distinct male world proved the foundation for conspiracy, rebellion and running away.

I have targeted to analyze the patterns of wage development in the changing macroeconomic conditions. According to the expectations the evolution of nominal and real wages is inter alia positively affected by the changes in labor productivity and negatively influenced by the deviation of unemployment rate from NAIRU. The evidence of procyclical behavior of real wages is not very robust as there was not found significant correlation in the time of decreasing real GDP. The most of results of the models applied on post Lehman Brothers period are consistent with the regressions based on complete data set. The chosen data proved to be not very suitable to show the extent of wage rigidity. The significant negative relationship between the development of real wages and changes in inflation rate implies the visibility of symptoms of wage rigidities even when we work with average macroeconomic variables.

Recent Australian academic attempts to define the 'charism,' or distinguishing spirit, of the Marist Brothers' style of education, have been conducted using sociological methodologies and have resulted in findings which are more religious than educational or pedagogical, in content. The present enquiry is more educational in focus and historical in approach. This enquiry poses a series of questions e.g: Did the Marists who arrived in Australia in 1872 come as the conscious bearers of a distinctive style of teaching? Did they adapt this distinctive style to meet the needs of the Australian society? How faithfully did they cling to their founding inspiration? Have they been successful in preserving this distinctiveness in the face of modern developments in Australian education and in the Catholic Church? Or, is all that remains the name 'Marist'? The historical methodology employed uses both recent academic analyses of the Marist Brothers' Founder's work and also of the archival documentation of the Order's foundation and development in Australia. It also tracks, though not in isolation, the development of the first Marist school in Sydney, St Patrick's, Church Hill; founded in 1872 and still operating, at a new location 'Dundas' in the more recently-formed diocese of Parramatta. This individual school's role in Marist teacher education in early, and more recent times, makes it an appropriate focus. In summary, the thesis concludes that the Marists did come as conscious disciples of St Marcellin Champagnat, their founder; but that the pristine inspiration had already begun to evolve. In Australia the brothers continued to follow his example in adapting to the newer demands of Church and State. After Vatican II and the return of State Aid, however, the pace and scope of development precipitated changes which arguably constitute a break from all but the names 'Marist' and 'Champagnat'.

This research identifies and draws out the complexity of masculinities produced and performed within the military. A common theme amongst academics writing on the military is that a unique set of hyper-masculinised subjectivities are produced and performed through the day to day activities of the soldier; these are considered hegemonic in that they marginalise and subordinates alternative productions of identity. This investigation seeks to challenge the notion of a hegemonic military masculinity by highlighting the intersectionality of these military subjectivities. Although gender is a key factor in coming to grips with the notion of being a soldier, empirical material collected emphasises how it is co-constituted by other social constructs such as class, able-bodiedness, and heterosexuality. Equally this research identifies the various spaces and temporalities in which these particular identities manifest. These various spaces provided an everyday, deeply symbolic and affective reservoir for the production of memories, bleeding past and present, as well as the future, into each other.

This project, Brothers for Life, is a curriculum of formation designed for seniors at an all-male Lasallian high school so they can join faculty in their efforts to facilitate retreats, prayer, and service activities for younger students. This project takes root in the writings of St. John Baptist de La Salle (the founder of Lasallian schools) which state that students in Christian schools should receive an education that moves the students toward full and abundant lives, not just an accumulation of numbers and facts. To give this project proper shape and direction, the unit design is organized through the Understanding by Design framework created by Wiggins and McTighe (2005, 2011). Through an organized structure that maintains authenticity to the Founder, this project opens the door to a fuller and more abundant life for the students enrolled in the course and by extension, the students and faculty to whom they minister.

This thesis examines the relationship between family and empire, taking as a case study, the Hillier family, who lived and worked in China and South-East Asia in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It argues that family operated as a key mechanism in the British world, both on a public and private level, in that it had an agency going beyond that of the individual members, which both stimulated and consolidated the expansion of that world. The process was mutually constitutive in that family both shaped and was shaped by empire. However, the strains and dislocations of those experiences could fundamentally alter and re-configure the notion of family, which lay at the heart of Victorian society. Spanning four generations, spread across a range of occupations and empire locales, the study takes as its primary focus three Hillier brothers, who made their lives and careers in China in the last half of the nineteenth century and first decade of the twentieth century, working in the Consular and Diplomatic service, the Chinese Maritime Customs and the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. Evolving a specific empire identity, they developed a series of networks which were key to establishing significant relationships with British and Chinese officialdom. By knitting together a number of strands of current historiography, relating to family, on the one hand, and the expanding British world, on the other, the study makes an important contribution to understanding the way in which this world was given coherence through the mechanism of family but the price which this exacted, in terms of its individual members and its structure, more generally. It also provides a model for exploring the role of family in other empire settings.

This thesis investigates the architectural responses to the Enlightenment in Britain during the second half of the eighteenth century and, in particular on the profound interrelation between the empirical ideas of the Enlightenment and the development of contemporary British architecture. The focus is on Robert and James Adam, whose works in architecture and theory consistently reflected the intellectual development of their age. This thesis will propose a new interpretation of the Adam brothers as revolutionary students and masters of Enlightenment ideas in the field of architecture. The conventional style-oriented notion, that every architect should have his style, has often led to rather careless dismissals of the novelty of the Adam architecture, of which Emil Kaufmann's Baroque (Architecture in the Age of Reason, 1955) and Giles Worsley's neo-Palladian (Classical Architecture in Britain: the Heroic Age, 1995) interpretations are notable illustrations. Neither of these studies gives the whole picture of the Adam brothers' conduct. The studies that explained the Adam Style in the context of the plurality of styles by emphasising the material resemblance of their designs to the variety of sources seem to have made no difference to historiography. They have lost in the stylistic complexity of the whole Adam Style. Listing the architectonic themes that were harmoniously combined and blended together into their works has resulted in nothing but a simple documentation of what one can see. Particular forms of style, dogmatic criteria from the past, the recognitions plurality of styles: none of these was taken into consideration in defining the Adam Style. This thesis argues, rather, that it was the notion of man's complete latitude in the act of creativity, which emerged from their close theoretical dependence on the empirical epistemology of the Enlightenment. The real nature of the Adam Style is in the ideal of rational, imaginative, and empirical application of a great variety of historic languages of architecture.

This thesis is a study of the quantum properties of multimode entangled photons created by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. More specifically, we attempt to utilize this multimode character in quantum information tasks such as Bell-state measurement and the generation of photons entangled in transverse spatial degrees of freedom. As a first investigation, a theoretical study of multimode Hong-Ou-Mandel interference was conducted. It is shown that the fourth-order interference effects depend upon the transverse spatial properties of the biphoton. Due to the transfer of the angular spectrum of the pump beam to the biphoton state shown by Monken et al. [Phys. Rev. A 57 3123 (1998)], the parity of the pump beam can be used as a control parameter of fourth-order interference. A Hong-Ou-Mandel interference experiment was performed using first-order Hermite-Gaussian pump beams. The experimental results show that the observed fourth-order interference behavior depends upon the parity of the pump beam. A first application of multimode interference in quantum information is in optical Bell-state analysis, which uses fourth-order interference techniques. A technical difficulty encountered with previous methods of Bell-state analysis is the requirement that the detectors be sensitive to photon number. However, using multimode interference, Bell-state analysis can be performed using single-photon detectors. To show that multimode interference could be used to improve upon these schemes, a simple Bellstate measurement experiment using multimode polarization entangled-photons was performed. Three classes of Bell-states were identified in the coincidence basis (with single photon detectors). In addition, similar methods for Bell-state analysis using hyperentangled states are discussed. Using multimode interference, we improve upon a previous proposal of Kwiat and Weinfurter [Phys. Rev. A 58 R2623 (1998)], which requires photons entangled in more than one degree of freedom. Finally, we propose a new method of Bell-state analysis of hyperentangled photons that does not require detectors sensitive to photon number and can be implemented non-locally. As a further study of the multimode properties of down-converted photons, we investigate the conservation of orbital angular momentum in spontaneous parametric down-conversion. It is well known that a light field can carry orbital angular momentum in the form of an azimuthal phase dependence. We show theoretically that the angular spectrum transfer enables the generation of photons entangled in orbital angular momentum. A simple multimode fourth-order interference experiment was performed which confirms these theoretical predictions. Finally, we studied the generation of photons entangled in Hermite-Gaussian modes. Using the theory of angular spectrum transfer, we show that spontaneous parametric down-conversion generates photons entangled in Hermite-Gaussian modes and calculate the probability amplitude to generate arbitrary Hermite-Gaussian modes. In addition we discuss the generation of maximally entangled Bell-states and arbitrary bipartite pure states.

Como uma primeira investigação, realizamos um estudo teórico sobre a interferência Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) multimodal. Mostramos que os efeitos de interferência de quarta ordem dependem das propriedades transversais do estado do bifóton (par de fótons). Devido à transferência do espectro angular do feixe bombeador para este estado, mostrado por Monken et al. [Phys. Rev. Além disto, discutimos dois métodos similares para análise de estado de Bell utilizando estados hiperemaranhados (emaranhados em mais de um grau de liberdade). Mostramos que uma proposta precedente de Kwiat et al. [Phys. Rev. A 58 R2623 (1998)], que requer fótons emaranhados em mais de um grau de liberdade, funcionar á melhor usando a interferência HOM multimodal. Finalmente, propomos um novo método de análise de estados de Bell de fótons hiperemaranhados que não requer detectores sensíveis ao número de fótons e pode ser executada não-localmente. Como um estudo adicional das propriedades multimodais de fótons produzidos pela conversão paramétrica descendente, investigamos a conservação e emaranhamento de momento angular orbital neste processo. Sabe-se bem que um campo eletromagnético pode carregar momento angular orbital na forma de uma fase azimutal no plano transversal. Desta forma, mostramos teoricamente que a geração de fótons emaranhados em momento angular orbital na conversão paramétrica descendente pode ser explicada através da transferência do espectro angular. Realizamos uma experiência multimodal simples de interferência de quarta ordem que comprovou as nossas previsões teóricas. Finalmente, estudamos a geração de fótons emaranhados nos modos transversais Hermite-Guassianos. Usando a teoria da transferência do espectro angular, mostramos que a conversão paramétrica descendente gera pares de fótons emaranhados em modos Hermite-Gaussianos, e para quaisquer pares destes modos, calculamos a amplitude de geração. Além disto, discutimos a geração de estados maximamente e não-maximamente emaranhados usando modos de primeira ordem.

How do citizens vote in rural Pakistan, and how much agency do they have in relation to local landlords, patrons and kinship networks in making electoral decisions? I explore this question in this dissertation through an empirical investigation of the voting behaviour of Pakistan's rural majority in its most populous and politically important province, Punjab, using a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods and original data on the voting behaviour of about 2300 households in 38 villages. The results of this dissertation counter the notions that rural Punjabi voters are dependent and that national elections can be won on the basis of extended kinship networks. My data reveals that the dependence of rural voters that so captivates popular discourse about Pakistani politics describes only about 7 percent of voters, and that kinship networks function more as forums for local collective action than as extended political organisations. I found that a vast majority of rural Punjabi citizens vote as members of village-level vote blocs that are organised by the landed village elite. Nevertheless, most rural Punjabi voters do not participate in vote blocs because of socio-economic dependence. Instead, I found that they are benefitseeking political actors who organise within their kinship networks to strengthen their bargaining position and then give their collective votes to vote bloc leaders who act as broker-patrons and provide access to state officials and services. I also found that voting behaviour varies significantly across villages and across households within the same village. Most of the variation between villages is explained by differences in social structure and varying levels of historical and current land inequality, while the fact that households that lie within the same village behave differently from one another is explained mainly by their wealth and caste status.

This thesis argues that the animation produced by the Disney and Warner Brothers Studios since 1932 presents a particular adaptation of the Depression and New Deal America to its audiences, leaving a heavy ideological imprint for historians to excavate. An analysis of this ideology is completely absent from current literature on animation or feature films during this period. Using unpublished memoranda from the Walt Disney Studios, trade press reviews and qualitative analysis, this thesis draws conclusions on how animation developed into a medium fit for propaganda in 1941. During the 1930s, animation underwent a transition from entertainment, to subjective commentary, before finally undertaking Government sponsored propaganda during the Second World War. It is this development in animation’s history that this thesis will uncover.

In an effort to further understand communication within sibling relationships, this study examined adult sibling relationships and the connection between attachment styles and the strategies or relational maintenance behaviors used to maintain such relationships. The study will employ the theoretical framework of attachment theory originally presented by Bowlby (1973). Scholars agree that the basic principle of attachment theory is that attachment relationships continue to be an important factor throughout the life span. Current research has used this theory to link attachment style with the use of relational maintenance behaviors in voluntary relationships. Having developed this framework, the next logical application of the theory is to discuss the use of attachment style and relational maintenance behaviors in non-voluntary relations. Of particular interest to this study is the connection between siblings in middle adulthood and the maintenance strategies used with their sibling.
