This thesis argues that the animation produced by the Disney and Warner Brothers Studios since 1932 presents a particular adaptation of the Depression and New Deal America to its audiences, leaving a heavy ideological imprint for historians to excavate. An analysis of this ideology is completely absent from current literature on animation or feature films during this period. Using unpublished memoranda from the Walt Disney Studios, trade press reviews and qualitative analysis, this thesis draws conclusions on how animation developed into a medium fit for propaganda in 1941. During the 1930s, animation underwent a transition from entertainment, to subjective commentary, before finally undertaking Government sponsored propaganda during the Second World War. It is this development in animation’s history that this thesis will uncover.

Particular emphasis is placed on the two divisions after they were attached to the 11 American Corps. especiallý their experience with the British Expeditionary Force in 1918, and the training received under the supervision of British officers. The 11 American Corps was unique in that it spent its entire service in France in the British sector. Originally it was composed of 10 divisions, but eight of these were removed by the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces, Gen. John. J. Pershing. The divisions were transferred to the First American Army and operated entirely independent of 11 American Corps. The Syrian de facto occupation of Lebanon since 1976 is usually interpreted as the expression of the Syrian regime's adherence to traditional power considerations, rather than to the ideology of the ruling Ba'th party. In particular since Syria originally intervened on the side of the pro-status quo Lebanese Christians, and helped them defeat the anti-status quo Lebanese Muslims and Palestinians. In other words, they intervened against its traditional allies. The central question posed in this study is: Why is Lebanon so important to Syria that it is willing to make large human and material sacrifices in order to retain its grip on this small strip of territory? The traditional answers to this question are not satisfactory; the need for an alternative approach is apparent. While not refuting the description of Syrian policies as being based on pragmatic considerations, this analysis attempts to show that Syrian policies toward Lebanon in fact originate in the fundamental values promoted by Ba'th ideology. By employing a cognitive theoretical approach, the perceptions held by the Syrian leadership at the time of Syrian intervention are taken into account. This approach allows a number of key images to emerge, notably the image of an external plot against the Arab nation; one of the cornerstones of Ba'th ideology. When studying the modern day relationship between Syria and Lebanon, the same focus on Arab unity and the historical brotherly ties between the two countries can be identified. Hafez al-Asad's death and the rise to power of his son, Bashar al-Asad, has not lead to a radical change in Syrian policy, rather it is apparent that the same considerations and the same underlying images still guide the Syrian decision-makers. The result is that although pragmatism guides Syrian policies, the ideology of the Ba'th party sets the frames for this pragmatism and that a traditional two-state model cannot be applied on the relationship between Syria and Lebanon. The central finding in this study is that the Syrian leadership will go to great lengths to ensure Lebanon stays Arab and preserve the last remains of Arab unity in the face of the Zionist enemy. In the struggle against Israel, Syria and Lebanon are to remain Brothers in Arms.

The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the downscaling ability of one-way nesting regional climate models (RCM). To do this, a rigorous and well-defined experiment for assessing the reliability of the one-way nesting approach is developed. This experiment, baptised the Big-Brother Experiment (BBE), is used for addressing some important one-way nesting issues.
The first part of this work is dedicated to the development of a scale decomposition tool employed for the BBE. This tool involves a new spectral analysing technique suitable for two-dimensional fields on limited-area domains, and is based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). It is used for degrading the spatial resolution of the lateral boundary conditions (LBC) used to drive the Canadian RCM (CRCM), for extracting mesoscale features from the atmospheric fields, and for regional validation, and producing power spectra.
The second part of the thesis describes the BBE framework and its first results. The BBE consists in first establishing a reference virtual-reality climate from an RCM simulation using a large and high-resolution domain. This simulation is called the "Big Brother". This big-brother simulation is then degraded toward the resolution of today's global objective analyses (OA) and/or global climate models (GCM) by removing the short scales. The resulting fields are then used as nesting data to drive an RCM (called the "Little Brother") which is integrated at the same high-resolution as the Big Brother, but over a sub-area of the big-brother domain. The climate statistics of the Little Brother are then compared with those of the big-brother simulation over the little-brother domain. Differences between the two climates can thus be unambiguously attributed to errors associated with the dynamical downscaling technique, and not to model errors nor to observation limitations. The results for a February simulation shows that the Canadian RCM, using a factor of 6 between the model and the LBC spatial resolution, and an update interval of 3 hours, is capable to pass the BBE test; thus showing the reliability of the one-way nesting approach.
In the third and last part of the thesis, the BBE is used to investigate the sensitivity of an RCM to the spatial resolution and temporal update frequency of the LBC. It is shown that spatial resolution jumps of 12, and an update frequency between twice a day (every 12 hours) and four times a day (every 6 hours), are the limits for which a 45-km RCM yields acceptable results.

This thesis is composed of three independent essays in applied microeconomics. The first contributes to the field of gender and family economics and analyzes the effect of the gender of the second-born sibling on first-born individuals’ attitudes. The second chapter speaks to the health economics literature, evaluating the unitended consequences of a liberalization of the morning after pill. The topic of the final chapter lies within the economics of education, proposing a way to differentiate between degrees depending on the type of higher education institution. Even though the three chapters seem separate, all of them share my interest in gender and education economics, as well as causal estimation. In Chapter 1, joint with Martin Habets, we analyze the causal effect of sibling gender on attitudes and preferences. Comparing first-born women with a next-born sister to first-born women with a next-born brother allows us to estimate the causal effect of sibling gender. In particular, we find that a next-born sister leads first-born women to have less stereotypically female preferences in education. We also explore how the gender of the next-born sibling influences parental involvement. Our findings indicate that parents are more involved in the education of their first-born daughter if their next-born sibling is also a girl. These results shed light on how sibling gender influences preferences and attitudes, specifically those for education choices that are gender role conforming. To further explore the role of sibling gender in shaping attitudes, we have designed an online survey – currently in progress – to measure gender roles more precisely. In Capter 2, I analyze the causal effects of liberalizing access to emergency hormonal contraception (EHC), also known as the morning after pill, on young adults’ reproductive behavior in England. The liberalization, which changed the prescription status from “on doctor’s prescription only” to “available without prescription in pharmacies", created easier and more timely access to EHC for all women aged 16 years or older. In a theoretical model of individual behavior I find that EHC, which can be seen as i insurance against pregnancies, acts both as a substitute for regular contraception, as well as a substitute for abortions. This creates the need for analyzing the issue empirically since overall effects on outcomes such as births and abortions are unclear. Using a difference-in-differences approach, I find that easier access to EHC increases births only among 20-24 year olds. I find no effects on abortions or sexually transmitted infections. Chapter 3, attempts to differentiate the degree attainment in the UK by type of higher education institutions. Historically higher education in the UK has been shaped by a dual system: elite universities on the one hand and polytechnics and other higher education institutions on the other. Despite the formal equivalence of both degrees, the two institution types faced different financing, target populations, admission procedures and subjects taught. Nevertheless, in survey data they are often indistinguishable. We overcome this problem using a multiple imputation technique in the UKHLS and BHPS data sets. We examine the validity of inference based on imputed values using Monte Carlo simulations. We also verify that the imputed values are consistent with university graduation rates computed using the universe of undergraduate students in the UK.

This thesis examines emotional relationships between brothers during the First World War through an exploration of personal narratives, oral histories, and military service tribunal records. Brothers have largely been ignored as a subject of historical analysis. The prevailing ‘vertical’ focus on the mother-son bond and maternal grief has edged male siblinghood to the perimeter of wartime and domestic masculinities. Fraternal stories are embedded in the narrative of the Great War, informing our understanding of the network of domestic ties sustaining men, and the performance of wartime masculinities. The thesis begins by analysing fraternal interchanges woven into the daily practices of late-Victorian and Edwardian family life. During the Great War, men separated by the conflict strove to maintain their fraternal relationships through letters and personal visits. They continued to act as companions, confidants, protectors, breadwinners, advisors, surrogate father figures, and role models to their siblings. When conscription was introduced many brothers acted in unison when requesting exemptions to protect their familial and business responsibilities. Fraternal togetherness is embedded in the wartime experiences of many men; a fact obscured by the privileging of military comradeship. This study explores expressions of brotherly ‘love’ by considering fraternal interactions at the transitional moment of departing for war and during combat. It concludes that brotherly relationships were significant, providing men with emotional and practical sustenance. Cherished nostalgic memories of shared childhood experiences and landscapes widen our understanding of what ‘home’ meant to serving men. Brothers enlisted and served together: benefiting from companionship and support but suffering when faced with sibling deaths and woundings. Many fraternal accounts can be categorised as ‘grief narratives’, confounding stereotypes of male stoicism. Brotherly loss unleashed powerful emotions: grief, anger and guilt. Surviving brothers often acted as ‘memory keepers’; circumventing the anonymisation of the dead in public commemorations by restoring the individual and particular war stories of their brothers.

The second part is the live-cinema documentary performance. In this version of the story, my foster brother and I are no longer only images on a screen; we are living, breathing, and emotional subjects in the present. Our presence alters how the audience consumes the material.

The object of this research project is to analyze the cultural, political and social integration of draft resisters and deserters living in Vancouver within the Canadian radical protest scene of the 1960s. In particular, it will investigate how refugees’ national and cultural identity, their own preconceptions of Canadian life and their own emotional response to their new environment either helped or hindered their attempts to engage in radical politics. War evaders involved the groups The Vancouver American Deserters Committee and Vancouver Yippie! showed divergent degrees of willingness to adapt their national and political identity to their new surroundings, and this had a direct impact on their ability to interact with the various political scenes springing up around the city. Using sociological theory and primary material (including letters, pamphlets, audio-visual material, newspaper articles and interviews) this study will prove that the maintenance of a solely American draft exile identity was in fact detrimental to an individual’s ability to engage in radical protest, and that a process of Canadianization was crucial to retaining some semblance of political relevance.

The Brothers Karamazov was the last novel of Dostoievski and for that reason is in way a sort of synthesis of his thinking. In the article there is a brief development of some key ideas as these: in matter of guilt, the attitude has more importance than action; everyone is guilty of everything before the eyes of everyone (universal guilt); suffering purifies the individual and acts as a remedy that promotes his spiritual elevation; freewill is central in human existence. But the novel is also a novel about a crime. Somebody is murdered and the readers will discover the perpetrator at the very end. 25% of the novel is devoted to technical legal matters: the instruction of the summary and the court trial. But what is most interesting is that an innocent is found guilty, because law had no other choice having into account the facts that are backed by evidence. It would be possible to find him not guilty, but for doing so it would be necessary to change the paradigm that is the backbone of modern criminal law.

This thesis puts forth the premise that the ideas of the Russian director Meyerhold correlate to the ideas of the Greek philosopher Plato. The writer shows that Meyerhold was a theatrical innovator in the sense that he gave Platonic thought a fresh reflection, expressing as he did his philosophic beliefs by means of the medium of the plastic arts and the stage; dialogue, scenic design, lighting techniques, etc., as opposed to the pure philosophic dialogues Plato used. Meyerhold's theatrical contributions arose from an attempt to resolve opposites, often by the creation of paradox, in order to provide the audience with at least a glimpse of a new world view. The writer uses the writings of Plato, and the writings and examples of the staged productions of Meyerhold to prove the aforementioned premise. Using Meyerhold's theory of uslovnyi theatre and Plato's Theory of Ideas, the writer shows that Meyerhold's work, his theatrical innovations, gave dramatic life to Platonic epistemology.

Together with their wives Otto and Richard Schomburgk arrived in Port Adelaide (South Australia) on August 16th 1849. The essay looks at how these two brothers, who had received their scientific training and promotion in the circle surrounding Alexander von Humboldt, reacted to the unfamiliar conditions in the young British colony. Some indication will be given as to the differences between the Schomburgk brothers treatment of the natural resources of the new colony and that of the English colonists of the time.
Otto und Richard Schomburgk erreichten zusammen mit ihren Frauen Port Adelaide (Südaustralien) am 6. August 1849. Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, wie die Brüder, die ihre wissenschaftliche Ausbildung und Förderung im Umkreis von Alexander von Humboldt erhalten haben, auf die unbekannten klimatischen Bedingungen in der noch jungen englischen Kolonie reagierten. This diploma thesis is focused on unconventional monetary policy tools that individual central banks introduced into practise as a response to the global financial crisis. It is about quantitative easing policy, foreign exchange interventions with exchange rate commitment and negative interest rates. This thesis also deals with classical tools of monetary policy such as open market operations, discount tools, minimum requirement reserve or foreign exchange interventions. Esta pesquisa tem o objetivo de desenvolver um método de ensino-aprendizagem para a Língua Inglesa, ancorado na gestão do conhecimento, proporcionada pela Tecnologia de Comunicação Digital, no contexto da educação formal. Os postulados teóricos eleitos estão no campo dos domínios cognitivo, tecnológico, biológico, filosófico e linguístico, nos quais, pelo entrelaçamento de disposições, tecem a categoria conceitual maior - emoção e linguagem - para propor o método. No domínio cognitivo, aborda-se a questão de mente e corpo como fenômenos inerentes um ao outro, com foco central na enação - ação construída e guiada pela percepção. No campo tecnológico, entende-se que a tecnologia digital, inserida na vida das pessoas, é responsável pela mediação das ações da sociedade contemporânea e impulsiona a produção e disseminação do conhecimento. No aspecto biológico, destaca-se a implicação do experienciar - a interação e o conhecer. Na esfera da Filosofia aproxima-se do conceito de corporeidade como o corpo dotado de inteligência própria e o conhecimento rizomático que não se constitui de unidades, mas de dimensões. No domínio linguístico, o estudo se ampara na Linguística Cognitiva que defende as experiências pessoais e coletivas como a base para os sistemas conceituais e trata o significado como resultado de relações intra e extralinguísticas, englobando aspectos textuais, cognitivos e interativos. O objeto de estudo é a transposição didática dos professores no ato da elaboração dos Objetos Digitais de Ensino-Aprendizagem. A metodologia de pesquisa baseia-se nos princípios da Pesquisa-Ação e envolve 25 professores de Língua Inglesa da Educação Básica de Escolas Públicas da região oeste do Paraná e 5 estudantes do último ano de um curso de Letras (Português/Inglês). A análise dos dados priorizou um enfoque dedutivo qualitativo, substanciando um diálogo entre as teorias, a interpretação das informações extraídas dos protocolos e a observação do resultado prático da transposição didática efetivada pelos participantes na elaboração dos Objetos Digitais de Ensino-Aprendizagem. Os resultados emergem dessa análise e sustentam a proposição do método MY WAY: um método para o ensino-aprendizagem da Língua Inglesa. O foco do método está no desenvolvimento da consciência fonológica e nas experiências individuais - metáforas - base para o desenvolvimento linguístico do estudante. Observa-se o modelo de prototipicidade na aquisição do vocabulário e entende-se que a audição, a oralidade e a apropriação do vocabulário antecedem a leitura e a gramática. O método aposta na potencialidade da Tecnologia de Comunicação Digital como uma das condições essenciais para o ensino de línguas no contexto atual. A pesquisa indica a necessária e urgente atualização dos professores no sentido de que suas ações estejam voltadas para mudança do quadro atual de ensino-aprendizagem de inglês.

This thesis examines the world of enslaved men in the antebellum southern United States. Using oral interviews conducted with formerly enslaved people, full-length slave autobiographies, as well as enslaved folklore, plantation records, trial papers, and petitions, it underscores that the lives of enslaved men were intertwined with one another, and that male interdependence was a fact of enslaved life. It examines how pursuits such as drinking, gambling, wrestling, hunting, and evading the patrol gangs brought enslaved men together in an all-male subculture through which they constructed their own independent notions of masculinity, friendship, solidarity and resistance. The thesis argues that homosocial company was integral to the gendered identity and self-esteem of enslaved men. The emotional landscape they created with other men offered them a vital mutual support network through which to resist the dehumanising features of enslaved life. Through each other, they forged an oppositional masculine culture that defied and subverted the authority of the slaveholder that structured their everyday lives. Despite the controls designed to locate the enslaved in plantation space, enslaved men illicitly left plantations at night, evaded patrol gangs, engaged in theft, and spread news, gossip and rumours from plantation to plantation across the South. Evidence indicates that this distinct male world proved the foundation for conspiracy, rebellion and running away.

I have targeted to analyze the patterns of wage development in the changing macroeconomic conditions. According to the expectations the evolution of nominal and real wages is inter alia positively affected by the changes in labor productivity and negatively influenced by the deviation of unemployment rate from NAIRU. The evidence of procyclical behavior of real wages is not very robust as there was not found significant correlation in the time of decreasing real GDP. The most of results of the models applied on post Lehman Brothers period are consistent with the regressions based on complete data set. The chosen data proved to be not very suitable to show the extent of wage rigidity. The significant negative relationship between the development of real wages and changes in inflation rate implies the visibility of symptoms of wage rigidities even when we work with average macroeconomic variables.

Recent Australian academic attempts to define the 'charism,' or distinguishing spirit, of the Marist Brothers' style of education, have been conducted using sociological methodologies and have resulted in findings which are more religious than educational or pedagogical, in content. The present enquiry is more educational in focus and historical in approach. This enquiry poses a series of questions e.g: Did the Marists who arrived in Australia in 1872 come as the conscious bearers of a distinctive style of teaching? Did they adapt this distinctive style to meet the needs of the Australian society? How faithfully did they cling to their founding inspiration? Have they been successful in preserving this distinctiveness in the face of modern developments in Australian education and in the Catholic Church? Or, is all that remains the name 'Marist'? The historical methodology employed uses both recent academic analyses of the Marist Brothers' Founder's work and also of the archival documentation of the Order's foundation and development in Australia. It also tracks, though not in isolation, the development of the first Marist school in Sydney, St Patrick's, Church Hill; founded in 1872 and still operating, at a new location 'Dundas' in the more recently-formed diocese of Parramatta. This individual school's role in Marist teacher education in early, and more recent times, makes it an appropriate focus. In summary, the thesis concludes that the Marists did come as conscious disciples of St Marcellin Champagnat, their founder; but that the pristine inspiration had already begun to evolve. In Australia the brothers continued to follow his example in adapting to the newer demands of Church and State. After Vatican II and the return of State Aid, however, the pace and scope of development precipitated changes which arguably constitute a break from all but the names 'Marist' and 'Champagnat'.

But China stepped into an incredible new towns growth, the massive and rapid development of new town result in hundreds of empty and ghost towns. As the developing pace of the new town plan the situation will be worse and worse. I have study 8 most famous empty town and chose Chenggong as the designing site. The government was played a great expectation on Chenggong new town. However looking at the facts of the empty town Chenggong, even though it has already been built for 11 years, there is still less people. The condition is still serious and it is impossible to have a great plan without caring about the people already living in the site. We have to strengthen communities and ensure a safer, stronger and smarter development. Therefore, creating a green way comes to the core strategy of the design. The main idea is to shift the focus from constructing the entirely new to the local residents and existing environment. The design looks at creating an integrated green network for the whole town making it as a new green infrastructure to achieve the multifunction. Diverse design elements has been used response to the 4 kinds of typical sites. All of those aim to form a good community and improve the living environment. The detail design sites is a sequence of “centre park”, “civic plaza”, “farm market”, “river front park” just like a chain from urban to rural. Meanwhile retrofit the edge of the channel into a more natural friendly area. The goal is to shift the focus from entire new to the existing community. Through developing the growing green way to form a good community.

This research identifies and draws out the complexity of masculinities produced and performed within the military. A common theme amongst academics writing on the military is that a unique set of hyper-masculinised subjectivities are produced and performed through the day to day activities of the soldier; these are considered hegemonic in that they marginalise and subordinates alternative productions of identity. This investigation seeks to challenge the notion of a hegemonic military masculinity by highlighting the intersectionality of these military subjectivities. Although gender is a key factor in coming to grips with the notion of being a soldier, empirical material collected emphasises how it is co-constituted by other social constructs such as class, able-bodiedness, and heterosexuality. Equally this research identifies the various spaces and temporalities in which these particular identities manifest. These various spaces provided an everyday, deeply symbolic and affective reservoir for the production of memories, bleeding past and present, as well as the future, into each other.

This project, Brothers for Life, is a curriculum of formation designed for seniors at an all-male Lasallian high school so they can join faculty in their efforts to facilitate retreats, prayer, and service activities for younger students. This project takes root in the writings of St. John Baptist de La Salle (the founder of Lasallian schools) which state that students in Christian schools should receive an education that moves the students toward full and abundant lives, not just an accumulation of numbers and facts. To give this project proper shape and direction, the unit design is organized through the Understanding by Design framework created by Wiggins and McTighe (2005, 2011). Through an organized structure that maintains authenticity to the Founder, this project opens the door to a fuller and more abundant life for the students enrolled in the course and by extension, the students and faculty to whom they minister.

This thesis examines the relationship between family and empire, taking as a case study, the Hillier family, who lived and worked in China and South-East Asia in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It argues that family operated as a key mechanism in the British world, both on a public and private level, in that it had an agency going beyond that of the individual members, which both stimulated and consolidated the expansion of that world. The process was mutually constitutive in that family both shaped and was shaped by empire. However, the strains and dislocations of those experiences could fundamentally alter and re-configure the notion of family, which lay at the heart of Victorian society. Spanning four generations, spread across a range of occupations and empire locales, the study takes as its primary focus three Hillier brothers, who made their lives and careers in China in the last half of the nineteenth century and first decade of the twentieth century, working in the Consular and Diplomatic service, the Chinese Maritime Customs and the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. Evolving a specific empire identity, they developed a series of networks which were key to establishing significant relationships with British and Chinese officialdom. By knitting together a number of strands of current historiography, relating to family, on the one hand, and the expanding British world, on the other, the study makes an important contribution to understanding the way in which this world was given coherence through the mechanism of family but the price which this exacted, in terms of its individual members and its structure, more generally. It also provides a model for exploring the role of family in other empire settings.
