No ambiente de convergência de mídias e digitalização dos meios, uma das tendências da televisão brasileira tem sido a adoção de estratégias transmídias, sobretudo, em formatos com grande apelo à interatividade, como o reality show. Apoiados em Fechine e Figueirôa (2011), entendemos a transmidiação como um modelo de produção que se funda na “reiteração, pervasividade e distribuição em distintas plataformas tecnológicas (TV, cinema, internet, celular, etc.) de conteúdos associados cuja articulação está ancorada na cultura participativa estimulada pelos meios digitais”. Partindo desse conceito e levando em consideração o cenário da cultura da convergência, descrita por Jenkins (2008), este trabalho tem por objetivo problematizar as estratégias transmídias no Big Brother Brasil, principal reality show da televisão brasileira, exibido pela Rede Globo desde 2002. Baseado nos estudos do audiovisual, da convergência e da transmidiação, o trabalho propõe uma categorização das estratégias e dos conteúdos transmídias do Big Brother Brasil baseada na observação sistemática das edições de 2013 e 2014.
In media convergence environment and digitization of media, one of the Brazilian television trends has been the adoption of transmídias strategies, especially in formats with great appeal to the interactivity, as the reality show. Based in Fechine and Figueirôa (2011), we understand the transmediation as a production model that is based on the "repetition, pervasiveness and distribution in different technological platforms (TV, cinema, internet, mobile, etc.) content associated whose pivot is anchored in participatory culture stimulated by digital means". Based on this concept and taking into account the convergence culture scene, described by Jenkins (2008), this research aims to analyze the strategies transmídias in Big Brother Brazil, main reality show on Brazilian television, broadcast by Rede Globo since 2002. Based in audiovisual studies, convergence and transmediation, the paper proposes a categorization strategies and transmídias content of Big Brother Brazil based on systematic observation of the 2013 and 2014 editions.

As emissoras de televisão sustentam o seu negócio na entrega de audiências aos anunciantes. Conhecer o comportamento do telespectador permite desenvolver melhor a oferta televisiva, alcançar maiores audiências e aumentar o valor que os anunciantes estarão dispostos a pagar pela sua atenção. Esta investigação aborda um programa do género reality show, o qual consiste na exposição da vida de outras pessoas, com o propósito de entreter o espectador. Em Portugal, o programa Big Brother acabou com a hegemonia da SIC sobre o mercado televisivo português e ajudou a consolidar a programação da TVI, tornando o terceiro player do mercado no líder nacional. Hoje, estas duas maiores empresas de televisão batalham novamente pela liderança de audiências no mercado em horário nobre. O Big Brother VIP foi a maneira que a TVI encontrou para competir com a bem-sucedida novela Dancin' Days, da SIC. Este estudo permitiu perceber que o consumidor pretende gratificar as suas necessidades por autenticidade e voyeurismo. Gosta de comédia e interacção social entre concorrentes e abomina manipulação. Foi ainda analisado o comportamento do espectador regular, o que influencia o consumo das Galas de Expulsão e de Nomeações e o que condiciona as gratificações do espectador ao ver o programa. Identificaram-se, ainda, quatro perfis do consumidor e o concorrente ideal foi descrito como sendo leal, sociável e divertido, preocupado com o bem-estar do grupo, curioso, ambicioso, orientado para a família, que não dependa de terceiros para ser feliz, saiba viver humildemente, saudável, ascético, com tendências igualitaristas, auto-confiante e cooperante.
Television broadcasting companies sustain their business by delivering audiences to advertisers. Knowing audience behavior allows them to better develop the television offer, to attain higher audiences and to increase the value marketers are willing to pay for televiewers attention. This research approaches a reality show television programme which aims to explore the lives of other people in an entertaining manner for the viewer. Portuguese Big Brother ended up with SIC's hegemony over the portuguese television market and helped to consolidate TVI's schedule based on popular information and national drama fiction (novella) which turned the third television player into the national leader. Today these two biggest broadcasting companies are again battling over leadership of primetime's ratings. Big Brother VIP was the way that TVI found to compete against the well succeeded SIC's novella Dancin' Days. This study allowed to access the way the televiewer reacts to the show and made it possible to understand that the consumer wants to gratify its authenticity and voyeuristic needs. He/she likes comedy and social interaction between contestants and abominates manipulation. The results allowed to understand the regular viewer's behavior, what makes people watch the eviction and nominating shows and what influences the gratifications sought by watching the show. There were obtained four viewer profiles as well and the ideal contestant was defined as loyal, sociable and funny, concerned with others well-being, curious, ambitious, family-oriented, don't depends on others to be happy, humble, healthy, ascetic and denotes egalitarian tendencies.

The study focuses on the social, literary, and psychological significance of the brother-sister relationship to a broad range of Renaissance tragedy and tragicomedy. After a brief historical analysis of siblings, the thesis considers the brother-sister relationship as an important means for dramatists to explore questions of identity, of gender conflict, and of differing understandings of family. It also examines the relationship as a developing literary tradition in the drama of the Stuart period, a tradition which culminates in the works of John Ford. The first half of the study surveys a large range of non-Shakespearean revenge tragedy and tragicomedy. In revenge tragedy, violent brother-sister strife serves as a symbol of the self in turmoil, as an image of a disordered family and society, and as a focal point for tension over the nature of women. Brothers also subvert traditional family roles in their relationships with their sisters. The avenging brother and sister, joined in shared loyalty to their house, mount a legitimate challenge to the authority of husband and king; pandar brothers become diabolical inversions of father and husband. Proceeding to tragicomedy, the thesis analyzes the brother as a figure of illegitimate authority and considers the privileged position gained by royal sisters, whose noble blood renders them the equal of their brothers. The latter half of the dissertation reinterprets the plays of John Webster and John Ford. In The Duchess of Malfi, the royal siblings' similarity, close blood tie, and high rank overturn gender difference and affirm the intimate connection between the sexes. The study considers the importance of blood family to the Duchess' self-conception and examines Ferdinand's attempts to create identity by usurping the place of his sister's husband. Ford's two plays 'Tis Pity She's A Whore and The Fancies Chaste and Noble stand as the culmination of dramatic treatments of idealized and antagonistic brother-sister relationships alike. Both works contrast the opposing nature of physical and familial love and elevate asexual love above sexual passion, presenting a sibling tie which undermines the bond between husband and wife.

The purpose of the research was to explore the experiences of siblings who have a brother or sister with a life-limiting or a life-threatening condition. The aim was to uncover themes in their experiences to inform practice and ultimately, improve the support that is available for such siblings. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with six participants who ranged between eight and 28 years of age. Transcripts from the interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) in order to generate themes. Five superordinate themes emerged across all participants: • The impact of having a brother or sister with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition on siblings as individuals. • The impact of life-limiting or life-threatening conditions on how siblings view their brother or sister. • The impact of having a brother or sister with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition on siblings' relationships within the family, friendship groups and school systems. • Within-child and systemic factors that help siblings to feel supported. • Within-child and systemic factors that cause siblings to feel that they lack support. A sixth superordinate theme emerged from interviews with the four older participants: • The impact of the passage of time on siblings' experiences. Possible implications of the study are discussed including avenues for further research and recommendations for schools and the practice of Educational Psychologists (EPs).

Abed, founder of Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (2007), Forum for African Women Educationalist (2008), Pratham (2010), mother2mothers (2012) and Soraya Salti, regional direction of INJAZ al-Arab (2012). This in-depth examination suggests that Drucker (2001) and Collins' (2005) postulation was accurate and the studied organizations excelled in the three mentioned principles.

This dissertation deals with Swedish upper secondary school students’ encounter and reception of various fictional texts in and outside of school. The focus of the study is how literary instruction, based on an expanded text concept, succeeds in meeting the students’ expectations and previous experiences of fictional texts. The theoretical framework consists of theories that approach reading as a transaction between text and reader in a social and cultural context.

The study is founded on qualitative methods, and the empirical material was collected through participant observation and interviews with students and teachers in four upper secondary school classes between 2001 and 2003. The research questions are: How does literary instruction develop students’ knowledge of fictional texts and reading? In what ways are the students’ textual worlds in and outside of school dialogically interrelated? How do students use different fictional texts in building their identities? Which values regarding different texts are visible in the classroom?

Findings indicate that mismatches between teachers’ and students’ literary repertoires are common in upper secondary school literary teaching. Since the literary instruction mainly drew upon traditional fiction, the students’ construction of literary worlds was not sufficiently supported. The students’ expectations of fiction reading were characterized by strong emotional involvement, and this was particularly true for the male students. The female students reported that there was a lack of female perspectives in the literary teaching.

The pedagogical implications of the study concern the importance of identifying the students’ literary repertoires and matching those with the literary instruction. Literary pedagogy should aim to expand these repertoires, and to help students acquire new reader roles. One way of achieving this is to promote dialogical teaching that encourages both efferent and aesthetic reading. Findings of the present study also indicate that teachers’ resources for working with an expanded text concept are limited. Consequently, current teacher education programmes and further training of working teachers must deal with reading of fictional texts from new and broader perspectives.

Until the 1970s, small black fishing communities primarily populated Bahia’s north coast. A recent demand for luxury coastal real estate has radically altered the region’s social and environmental landscape. While Bahia’s population is roughly 80% poor and black, the coast is now a space of exclusivity and whiteness. Sewage infrastructure does not meet the needs of the growing population. Domestic sewage flows directly into urban rivers. Poor black fishers, whose food security and livelihoods depend on access to healthy water resources, suffer most in this context. This dissertation explores two interlinking forms of environmental racism – water pollution and racial profiling – that fishers in Praia de Buraquinho, Bahia, Brazil, experience daily. Based on fourteen months of ethnographic research, this project follows the lives of 75 fishers enmeshed in a struggle for environmental and racial justice. I uncover how coastal development has polluted the community's primary river fishery while private gated communities physically restrict fishers' access and subject them to racial profiling practices by private security guards. Ultimately, I argue that regional coastal development in Bahia represents a new model of capital accumulation through what I call “racialized environmental dispossession” that, as one Praia de Buraquinho fishers suggests, is "like watching a brother die."

This thesis takes the form of three linked works centred around the fictionalised story of a young Scottish soldier of the 4th Cameron Highlanders from the years 1938 to 1946. These three works are: 1. An epistolary novella comprising the 17 letters of a found manuscript. 2. A feature film screenplay adapted from the letters. 3. A reflective essay on the creative process. The fictionalized narrative is based on the real life experiences of a small group of Scottish soldiers from several different regiments of the 51st Highland Division catalogued in books, memoirs and in personal recollections. They were amongst the 9,000 men who surrendered at St Valery-en-Caux on June 12th 1940 , and subsequently escaped. Through a varied range of routes, they made their way back to Britain. An even smaller group joined the re-formed 51st, and after bloody campaigns in North Africa, took part in the D-Day invasion. On the 2nd of September, 1944, the battalions of The 5th Camerons and the 5th Seaforths returned to the scene of their surrender, and liberated St Valery-en-Caux. Their collective experience encapsulates one small but little known part of the story of World War II.

This thesis examines the history and development of the first "semi-official" face-to-face meetings between members of the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church since the Reformation. The series of meetings were held at Malines, Belgium, under the presidency of Cardinal Mercier, and extended from 1921-1925. The initiative for these meetings came from private individuals, principally from Lord Halifax (2nd Viscount) on the Anglican side, and Abbe Fernand Portal, a French Roman Catholic priest. By involving Cardinal Mercier in these "private conversations", the participants succeeded in obtaining a guarded measure of authorization from the leadership of both Churches, from Randall Davidson, Archbishop of Canterbury, and from Pope Pius XI. When news of these Conversations at Malines eventually became public, it occasioned considerable negative reaction both from Evangelical Anglicans and the more ultramontane English Roman Catholics. The Evangelicals objected that the Anglican participants at these meetings were principally Anglo-Catholics and not representative of the whole Anglican Church, and the Roman Catholics objected to the fact that the meetings were being held on the Continent, and that English Roman Catholics had been excluded from the group of participants. The theological movements and historical conditions of the times militated against the success of these meetings, both in terms of arriving at a common and acceptable theological meeting point, and also in terms of the growing difference in organizational structures of both Churches. It was principally the enthusiasm and vision of Halifax, Portal and Mercier for preparing the groundwork of a united Christendom which provided the momentum for continued meetings. The Malines meetings in themselves did not result in any major ecumenical advance in their own time, but in several substantial ways they have initiated and contributed important elements in methodology and content to the present ecumenical work of the ARCIC Commission and in Anglican/Roman Catholic relations.

The present work has, as its main objective, the observation of the way through which the participants of a reality show create characters for themselves and perform them to the cameras, thus reaching a wider audience with whom they do not establish direct contact. In order to draw reasonable conclusions from the proposed object, we discussed some concepts and notions that turned out to be fundamental to the empiric analysis undertaken, such as television, mediation and social representations. We tried to understand television as a privileged arena to observe the dynamics of social representations and came to the conclusion that the genres and formats of television shows can be classified through the reoccurance of certain representational patterns. Therefore, we used the notion of reality show as a television genre in itself and Big Brother Brasil as the format chosen, since the show seemed to be the one that best portrayed, at the time, the performances directed to the cameras. The participants of television shows like BBB, in order to succeed in their auto-performances, have to work with at least three types of interaction: those with the other participants, strongly influenced by the confinement and by the game proposed; those with the producers and the show host and, finally; those with the audience, mediated by the cameras. Once we put these three types of interactions in a proper scheme, we could establish our analytic corpus: thirteen episodes from the third season of BBB in which we watched more closely the participants, their performances and the effectiveness of the performances of six specific participants.
O presente trabalho tem como objetivo principal observar o modo pelo qual os participantes de um programa de reality show constroem e performam personagens de si mesmos, guiando suas ações para as câmeras televisivas e, conseqüentemente, para um público com o qual não estabelecem um contato direto. Para tentarmos responder ao problema proposto, foi preciso, inicialmente, discutir alguns conceitos e noções que despontaram como fundamentais para a construção de nossa análise empírica, como televisão, mediação e representações sociais. Olhamos para a televisão como o espaço privilegiado para se observar a dinâmica das representações sociais. É justamente a recorrência de algumas representações nos programas televisivos que nos permite classifica-los em determinados gêneros e formatos. Neste contexto, tomamos o reality show como um gênero televisivo próprio e Big Brother Brasil, o exemplo por nós escolhido, como um de seus formatos. Talvez tal programa seja o que melhor evidencie o problema das performances encenadas para as câmeras. Os participantes de programas como BBB, para serem bem sucedidos em suas auto-encenações, têm que trabalhar, concomitantemente, com pelo menos três tipos de enquadramentos interacionais: as interações com os demais participantes, marcadas pelo confinamento e pelo jogo proposto pelo formato; as interações com os produtores e o apresentador; e, as interações com público, mediadas pelas câmeras. Depois de mapearmos esses enquadramentos, pudemos configurar nosso corpus analítico: foram selecionados treze episódios da terceira versão de BBB, em que observamos com maior atenção o desempenho da performance de seis participantes específicos.

As President Barack Obama was sworn into office on January 20, 2009, the United States was abuzz with talk of the first African American president. At this historic moment, one man standing on the inaugural platform, seemingly a relic of the past, had actually been called by the moniker the “first black president” for years. President William Jefferson Clinton had long enjoyed the support of African Americans during his political career, but the man from Hope also had a complex and tenuous relationship with this faction of his political base. Clinton stood at the nexus of intense political battles between conservatives’ demands for a return to the past and African Americans’ demands for change and fuller equality. He also struggled with the class dynamics dividing the American electorate, especially African Americans. Those with financial means seized newfound opportunities to go to college, enter the professions, pursue entrepreneurial ambitions, and engage in mainstream politics, while those without financial means were essentially left behind. The former became key to Clinton’s political success as he skillfully negotiated the African American class structure while at the same time maintaining the support of white Americans. The results were tremendously positive for some African Americans. For others, the Clinton presidency was devastating. Brother Bill examines President Clinton’s political relationship with African Americans and illuminates the nuances of race and class at the end of the twentieth century, an era of technological, political, and social upheaval.

This study examined the caregiving identities of Taiwanese women who have siblings with cerebral palsy. It is based on 12 in-depth qualitative interviews with 6 women who were at least 20 years of age, each of whom self-identified either as the family member most involved in caregiving or as the only sister of the sibling with cerebral palsy. The results of the study suggest that the provision of current and future care to siblings with cerebral palsy is a complex phenomenon that contributes to how these women view themselves. Caregiving is informed by four processes associated with the provision of care to their siblings: (a) caring through interpretation (b) caring through transformation (c) caring through protection and (d) caring through sacrifice. Engaging in these four processes of providing care to others created unique considerations and tensions in carrying out other roles these women assume in their lives. More specifically, these tensions had to do with their negotiation of relationships with their mothers, considerations pertaining to who they will marry or have already married, the denial of their right to inherit family properties, as well as their desire and expectation to provide ongoing care to their sibling with CP after marriage. In the study, we observed that these women internalized the sexual division of labour in their families and in their culture; they perpetuated the gender system that requires mothers and sisters to engage in family care. Therefore, greater attention must be brought to the promotion of a more equitable sharing of caring tasks by men and women in the family and to the designing and implementing of long-term care policies adapted to the unique characteristics of Taiwanese society.
L'identité d'aidante naturelle des taïwanaises avec frères ou sœurs atteints de paralysie cérébrale Résumé Cette étude a examiné l'identité d'aidante naturelle des taïwanaises qui prennent soin de leurs frères ou sœurs atteints de paralysie cérébrale. Elle est basée sur 12 interviews détaillées avec 6 femmes âgées d'au moins 20 ans. Ces dernières se sont identifiées soit comme les uniques sœurs des personnes atteintes de paralysie cérébrale ou encore comme les personnes les plus impliquées dans la provision de soins. Les résultats de cette étude suggèrent que la provision de soins présents et futurs aux frères ou sœurs atteints de paralysie cérébrale est un phénomène complexe qui contribue à la perception de soi de ces femmes. Ce phénomène est influencé par quatre processus associés à la provision des soins : (a) soins par interprétation (b) soins par transformation (c) soins par protection (d) soins par sacrifice. L'implication dans ces quatre processus a crée pour ces femmes des considérations uniques et des tensions dans d'autres domaines de leur vie. Plus précisément, ces tensions sont liées à la négociation des relations avec leurs mères, à leurs choix de conjoints, à la répudiation de leurs droits à la succession, ainsi qu'à leurs aspirations et attentes relatives à la provision de soins continus à leurs frères ou sœurs atteints de paralysie cérébrale après le mariage. Étant donné que les femmes ont assimilé la division du travail dans leurs familles et dans leur culture, et qu'elles continuent à vivre dans un système qui demande que les mères et les sœurs s'impliquent dans les soins familiaux, plus d'attention doit être accordée à la promotion d'un partage plus équitable des soins prodigués par les hommes et les femmes dans les familles. Plus d'attention doit aussi être portée au développement de politiques de soins à long terme adaptés à la société taïwanaise.

In light of the global shift to remote work that was prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic - the relevance and use of Electronic Performance Monitoring (EPM) significantly escalated across all sectors. However, the most recent comprehensive literature review on the topic by Ravid et al. (2020) pointed out significant gaps in how EPM is perceived by knowledge-based employees. In line with those defined gaps, we raised two research questions, regarding what the perceptions of knowledge-based workers are towards the implementation and dissemination of EPM techniques, and whether the workplace context (home/office) has an effect on knowledge-based worker’s perceptions towards it. In this paper, we take a critical approach relying on a theory-based typology of EPM characteristics and build on the organizational control theory by elaborating on the technology-mediated control concept. We follow the constructivist grounded theory approach developed by Charmaz (2008) and the data was collected via 20 semi-structured interviews. The key findings of this research showed similarities as well as differences in how knowledge-based employees perceive EPM in contrast to other types of workforce. While overall the perceptions on EPM are negative, they can to some extent be alleviated by introducing a justifiable purpose, being transparent, allowing control over monitoring, and setting clear limits. Moreover, we provided insights into the perceptions of knowledge-based workers in response to EPM within the context of working from home. In such a context, knowledge-based workers show more resistance to EPM techniques and higher expectations of privacy, transparency, and appropriate data handling. Lastly, the authors provided avenues for further research including cross-cultural perspective, access to data, and ethicality and legality of EPM.

The following study explored the experiences of Ghanaian adult siblings of a brother or sister with a mental disability in Accra, Ghana. The literature review included international and multidisciplinary research on culture, Ghana, Ghanaian culture, family caregiver experiences, and adult siblings of individuals with a mental disability. A descriptive phenomenological design was employed to capture and describe the essence of the experiences of the participants of this study. The primary research question explored through this design was: what is the experience of being an adult sibling of a brother or sister with a mental disability in Ghana? The secondary research question was: what are the factors that impact the adult caregiver in caring for the sibling with a mental disability in Ghana? A purposeful sampling method was used to recruit 15 adult siblings of an individual with a mental disability with the assistance of a school for individuals with special needs located in Accra, Ghana. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data for this study. Five themes were identified in relation to the primary research question: 1) impact on self, 2) sibling relationship, 3) family, 4) interactions with society, and 5) caregiver. In answer to the secondary research question, several factors were found to impact the adult siblings in caring for their brother or sister: level of care needed, total number of siblings, sibling rank order, age, gender, parents living or passed, parental status, and financial status. The results of the study were discussed in relation to the reviewed literature, implications for the findings, and recommendations for future research were included. This study added to existing body of international psychology literature, demonstrated the importance of attending to the influence of culture when seeking to understand the experiences and needs of adult siblings of a brother or sister with a mental disability, and has the potential to inform systems of support for Ghanaian siblings of individuals with mental disabilities.

Some reports suggest that mental health services are not meeting the needs of young people from cultural minorities. This review focuses on adolescents' perceptions of mental health problems and services and adolescent help-seeking behaviour, with a particular focus on African/Afro-Caribbean adolescents. Some of the influences on African/Afro-Caribbean young people, which affect these perceptions and behaviours, are also discussed. Adolescents tend to have negative and stigmatising perceptions about mental health problems and services. Help-seeking is low, particularly for boys, and adolescents often prefer to seek informal help through long-term, well established relationships. This review highlights the need for more research into help-seeking amongst African/Afro-Caribbean adolescents and suggestions are made for future studies, as well as discussing some of the clinical implications of this literature review.

This study will assess Stanley Hauerwas's claim that peacemaking is a virtue of the church in which peace exists as a necessary characteristic of the church. Christians are formed by practices of the church and so gain the skills required to live faithfully in the world. Such formation teaches us to be truthful and to be at peace. Peace is not only part of this formation; it is this formation. Such formation is based on the present existence of peace in the church through Christ. Not only is peace a part of the local and catholic church but war has been abolished through Christ. Hauerwas claims theology as a legitimate discourse in relation to social and physical sciences. Theology has its primary locus in the church rather than in ahistorical accounts or the university. This claiming of the language of the church creates space for particularity which is often subsumed under the universalizing assertions of the nation-state. With peace as a characteristic of the church, Hauerwas asserts that peacemaking is a virtue of the church and not merely an optional aspect of its life.

The impact of sport participation among youth is a widely discussed phenomenon. Researchers argue that sport participation can contribute to both positive and negative impact. The aim of this study is to find out how youth in a disadvantaged community in South Africa experience the social impact of sport. The data were collected through four group interviews with 24 youth (aged 16-20) who participated in three different teams; soccer, basketball and mountainbike. The result indicates that the respondents experienced an overall positive social impact from their sport participation. Six categories were identified as prominent in the result; acquire life skills, building friendship, emotional development, the importance of positive leadership, avoiding drugs and crime and support from the community.

Bakgrunden till ämnesvalet är att media gärna framställer Big Brother som något dåligt, som ungdomar kan ta efter. Det huvudsakliga syftet med studien är att få en insikt i hur 15-åringar hanterar Big Brother i vardagen. För att angripa ämnet ur ett sociologiskt perspektiv har vi bland annat använt oss av kommunikations-, postmodern och feministisk teori. Uppsatsen bygger på sjutton intervjuer som ger oss en inblick i just de intervjuades relation till Big Brother. Ämnen som berörs är ungdomarnas inlevelse i programmet, könsroller, verklighetsförankring, identifikation och varför och om det är viktigt att titta på Big Brother. Resultat som framkommer rör Big Brother som postmodernt fenomen, könsroller, identifikation och fiktion eller verklighet.

The literature review synthesises the literature examining the impact of having a sibling with autism on siblings unaffected by autism. Four electronic databases and two journals were scrutinised in a systematic literature search for studies focusing on the effects of having a sibling with autism. Studies published between 1979 and 2007 were elicited for inclusion. The literature suggests that having a sibling with autism is not necessarily a harmful experience. The review indicates that the impact a child with autism has on their typically developing sibling can have positive and negative aspects, which are likely to change over time and are mediated by various factors. The experience of the sibling relationship when one child has autism has yet to be fully explored from the perspective of the siblings without autism themselves. Early quantitative research examining the impact of having a sibling with autism indicated various negative effects. Qualitative studies have begun to explore the factors determining the positive and negative effects of having such a sibling, from child sibling perspectives. In this study child sibling's perceptions and experiences of the quality of the sibling relationship with their brother or sister with autism were explored using semi-structured interviews and a grounded theory methodology. Fifteen siblings without autism aged between six and thirteen with a sibling with autism aged between four and fourteen were interviewed. A theoretical account and process model of children's perceptions and experiences of their relationship with their sibling with autism were generated. The analysis indicated that for children who have a brother or sister with autism, a deep need for a relationship with their sibling is apparent. The analysis is discussed in terms of supplementing previous research findings and going some way to explaining the processes behind positive adaptation and negative adaptation to having a sibling with autism. Clinical implications are discussed and suggestions for further research are made. The critical appraisal offers an examination of the research process and the research journey as an enlightening learning experience.

George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, first published in 1949, is a vision of socialism gone wrong. The setting of Oceania is a world ruled over by an oligarchical collective, “The Party,” which wields absolute power through a formidable combination of surveillance technology and the operation of the principles of “panoptic control,” a concept drawn from Jeremy Bentham’s model prison design of the late 1700s and revived by Foucault in the mid 1970s. The combination of surveillance technology and panoptic control is central to the functioning of power in Orwell’s novel, a union which has created a self-sustaining form of totalitarianism dependent on the oppression of individual identity for its automatic perpetuation. This essay offers a reading of Nineteen Eighty-Four as an implicit critique of Bentham’s Panopticon which in many ways foreshadowed the later work of Michel Foucault on the functioning of power within this specific type of physical and social architecture.

This thesis examines how to optimize intelligence sharing in a coalition by a thorough literature review and site visits to intelligence sharing organizations in order to establish best practices for multinational intelligence sharing. The newly established NATO SOF Headquarters (NSHQ) in Mons, Belgium was treated as a test case to validate their intelligence sharing procedures and structures in reference to the authors' identified best practices: mutual gains and benefits; trust; direct control; and accessibility and interoperability. Intelligence support to SOF is a decisive factor, when in conventional operations it often is not; therefore intelligence support to SOF is special - NATO SOF is no exception. The level of intelligence support to SOF normally only exists at the national level, due to bureaucratic obstacles, a need to protect sensitive sources and capabilities, and lack of trust. The NSHQ is experimenting with several innovative methods to enhance trust and streamline intelligence capability amongst NATO SOF forces. There are structural and organizational lessons learned from the establishment of the NSHQ that can be applied to future operations and coalitions.

Open your eyes and see. There is nothing more incredible than the act of visualizing the innumerous possibilities that are before our eyes: images, they are more than a combination of colors and forms, they produce meanings and, logically, symbols. From this production of images some questions can be raised, such as, what do they want to represent? This dissertation focuses the images transmitted on the television program Big Brother Brazil (BBB) in its tenth edition, which took place in 2010. When I started the research, the question that I, a television spectator and anthropologist, raised were: how are the discourses of femininity, masculinity and homosexuality reproduced? Above all, how the central model was reproduced hegemonic references? These references seem to subordinate, devalue and limit the plural existences of masculinity, femininity and homosexuality. Finally, I perceived that the fieldwork data did not only show the assumptions of normativity and the subjects were not completely framed, there were dislocations. Knowing that nothing is simple in the field of gender and sexuality, there were several tensions. The diversity proposed by the program had its limits. In proposing to denaturalize the BBB, I aimed to understand how an audiovisual product watched by the most varied social groups can influence, sediment or make one reflect on the formal conventions about gender and sexuality.
Abrir os olhos e ver. Não há nada mais incrível que o ato de enxergar as inúmeras possibilidades que estão diante dos nossos olhos: as imagens. Elas são mais que uma junção de cores e formas; produzem significado e, logicamente, símbolos. E desta produção de imagens pode-se fazer alguns questionamentos, como, o que elas querem representar? O interesse dessa dissertação permeou a análise do discurso das imagens transmitidas pelo programa de televisão Big Brother Brasil (BBB) em sua décima edição, ocorrida no ano de 2010. Ao iniciar a pesquisa, a questão que eu, telespectadora/antropóloga, levava comigo era: como se reproduziam os discursos da feminilidade, da masculinidade e da homossexualidade? Sobretudo, como se reproduzia o modelo central as referências hegemônicas? Essas referências pareciam subjugar, desvalorizar e limitar as existências plurais de masculinidade, feminilidade e homossexualidade. Ao final, percebi que os dados do campo não mostravam apenas os pressupostos da normatividade e os sujeitos não estavam completamente emoldurados; haviam deslocamentos. Sabendo que nada é simples no campo do gênero e da sexualidade, houveram diversas tensões. A diversidade proposta pelo programa teve o seu limite. Ao se propor desnaturalizar o BBB, pretendo compreender como um produto audiovisual assistido pelos mais variados grupos sociais pode influenciar, sedimentar ou colocar em reflexão as convenções formais quanto ao gênero e quanto à sexualidade.

Target of criticism from various sections of society, the Big Brother Brazil as object of study, allows looks from various academic aspects such as the Sociology, Anthropology and Psychology, and in the area of communication, can be analyzed from a range of possibilities to deal with the subject example the authors François Jost and Muniz Sodre. Among these possibilities, in this work, he started to study the Big Brother Brazil as televisual product and as a theoretical framework and is considered the television drama elements in order to understand if it is possible to find points of intersection between these two narratives. Therefore, it is important to consider that it is necessary to leave the common sense in which the shows realitys are empty and do not add value to society. As media products such attractions condense aspects involving not only the Brazilian people culture, considering its habits and behavior, but above all, which reconfigures media in a new genre that gives rise to an invented reality, being sold as reality only because it uses real aspects. In this study object of analysis, the construction of the characters worked, observing the physical or behavioral characteristics of the participants that were transmitted by the program production. In the same study, it was also observed that, both in the house parties, as the evidence leader and Angel, the productions performed by the direction of the program can be considered as performing structures from the understanding that such spaces are strategically prepared environments to generate the "stage" of events. The third and most important category of analysis consisted of the construction of three major narrative threads in search of participants to win the program. The first narrative thread refers to the relationship between Amanda and Fernando, the second main narrative thread is the involvement of Aline and Fernando, and the third main narrative thread discusses the lonely path of César Award winner in cash. It is thus understandable that the precise identification of these categories in the fifteenth edition of the reality provides a new perspective on the Big Brother Brazil as audiovisual product. This look not only demystifies the 'label' reality show presented by broadcaster as possible acceptance of television drama elements in this genre programs. Alvo de críticas oriundas das mais variadas camadas da sociedade, o Big Brother Brasil, enquanto objeto de estudo, possibilita olhares das mais diversas vertentes acadêmicas a exemplo da Sociologia, da Antropologia e da Psicologia, e, na área da Comunicação, pode ser analisado a partir de um leque de possibilidades que tratam do tema a exemplo dos autores François Jost e Muniz Sodré. Dentre essas possibilidades, no presente trabalho, passou-se a estudar o Big Brother Brasil enquanto produto televisual e como arcabouço teórico e se considerou os elementos da teledramaturgia a fim de entender se é possível encontrar pontos de interseção entre essas duas narrativas. Para tanto, é importante considerar que é necessário sair do senso comum no qual os realitys shows são vazios e não agregam valor à sociedade. Como produtos midiáticos, tais atrações condensam aspectos que envolvem não apenas a cultura do povo brasileiro, considerando seus hábitos e comportamentos, mas, sobretudo, o que a mídia reconfigura em um novo gênero que dá origem a uma realidade inventada, sendo vendida como realidade apenas porque se utiliza de aspectos do real. Na análise do objeto deste estudo, trabalhou-se a construção dos personagens, observando-se as características físicas ou comportamentais dos participantes que eram transmitidas por parte da produção do programa. Ainda neste estudo, observou-se também que, tanto nas festas da casa, como nas provas do Líder e do Anjo, as produções realizadas pela direção do programa podem ser consideradas como estruturas cênicas a partir da compreensão de que tais espaços são ambientes preparados estrategicamente para gerar o “palco” dos acontecimentos. A terceira e mais relevante categoria de análise constituiu-se da construção de três fios narrativos principais na busca dos participantes em vencer o programa. O primeiro fio narrativo se refere ao relacionamento entre Amanda e Fernando, o segundo fio narrativo principal trata do envolvimento de Aline e Fernando, e o terceiro fio narrativo principal aborda a trajetória solitária de César, ganhador do prêmio em dinheiro. Compreende-se assim que a identificação precisa destas categorias na décima quinta edição do reality possibilita uma nova perspectiva a respeito do Big Brother Brasil enquanto produto audiovisual. Tal olhar não apenas desmitifica a ‘etiqueta’ de reality show apresentada pela emissora como possibilita a aceitação de elementos da teledramaturgia em programas deste gênero.

The purpose of this study was to explore the predictive potential of the information gathered on the Big Brother/Big Sister volunteer application blank for the prediction of successful (matched 12 or more months) and unsuccessful (matched six months or less) volunteers. Two alternate application blank weighting procedures (England's 1971 weighting scheme and multiple regression analysis) were used and the results of these procedures were compared. It was hypothesized that both procedures would correlate significantly with a tenure criterion. This hypothesis was supported, although the England (1971) procedure failed to cross-validate. Additionally, it was hypothesized that the multiple regression procedure would yield a shrunken r which is higher than the cross-validation estimate obtained using England's (1971) method. This hypothesis was not supported. A discussion of these results and recommendations for the use of this study is provided.

Hundreds of thousands of Australian children under the age of six witnessed at least some of the coverage of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. In the days and weeks that followed September 11, the researcher was confronted with numerous anecdotes from mothers who talked about the impact the coverage had had on their children. Many of the mothers reported that they had not known their children were watching the coverage or had not believed that they were old enough to understand what was going on. This raised the question of responsibility and sparked the research project which asked how could preschool children best be protected from material that was likely to disturb or harm them both in scheduled news broadcasts and extraordinary events such as September 11? Through surveys, focus groups with mothers and interviews with news directors, the research looked at existing protections, how well they worked in the view of both parents and the industry and whether there could or should be a better way. The research recommended that greater protection of preschool children from inappropriate television news content could be achieved through the implementation of six recommendations. 1. Television news should be Rated PG. 2. Digital television technology should be employed to prevent news events 'overtaking' scheduled children's programming and to protect safe harbours placed in the classifications zones to protect children. 3. Broadcasters should regain control of the images that go to air during 'live' feeds from obviously volatile situations by building in short delays in G classification zones. 4. Parents should be educated to understand that even very young children can take in television news and are often scared by it. 5. Television journalists should understand that even very young children are exposed to television news and are often scared by it. 6. News promotions during afternoon children's programming should be dropped.

A review was undertaken for the usage of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) in relation to crime investigation, detection and prevention. The aim of this paper is to discuss the usage of the current CCTV system, and how effective it is concerning crime deterrence and crime prevention in aid of national security. Similarly, the current usage of mobile phones and its prevalence as a tool for committing crime, as well as the current limitations in digital forensics involving mobile phone extraction and analysis were also addressed. Furthermore, this review aims to highlight the current potential for a coupling technique between artificial intelligence and CCTV footage to maximise the extraction of mobile phone screen content.

The purpose of this study was to examine privilege in families and uncover the complexities of sibling relationships in adulthood. Through interviewing 13 adult siblings and 3 mothers from 4 families my goal was to gain a clearer picture of what privilege in families means. The sample consisted of a family with 3 sisters, a family with 3 brothers and a sister, a family with 4 brothers, and a family with 2 brothers and a sister. The adult siblings ranged in age from 30 to 60, with an average age of 42. The mothers ranged in age from 62 to 70, with an average age of 67. The study was guided by three theoretical frameworks: a life course, a phenomenological, and a feminist perspective. I conducted this study utilizing an integration of qualitative and feminist methodologies. I used a snowball sampling technique to recruit participants. Data were collected through the use of qualitative in-depth interviews. The interview guides were developed based on the research questions, the review of literature, and the theories guiding the study. I draw 5 conclusions from this study. First, there is a sense of devotion to family that is both expected and fulfilled by simply spending time together, being there for each other in times of need, and at times compromising personal needs or wants. Second, there is an overarching sense of justice that is discussed in everyday language, but at the same time referred to as "something we don't ever think about." Third, descriptions of having a continuous bond among siblings is verbalized as "being the same but different" or just feeling "something in the air," while at the same time mourning the absense of something that is "gone forever." Fourth, interviewing multiple family members extends the understanding of the difficulty of taking different stories heard by each family member and fitting them together into a "family photo." Finally, maintaining an awareness of what it is like to try to "speak for your family" has a different meaning when you also hold the knowledge that everyone else is doing the same thing--but different.

In light of its title, ""The Petting Zoo,""? many of the poems in this collection exist on the page as animals, domestic ones mostly like cats and dogs and birds. Animals that have been tamed and trained to eat out of bowl or Petri dish, shit in certain places, and animals that have grown accustomed to the habitual pet and good good bird affirmation of owner. Katy wanna cracker? To be looked at. To be fed. To be loved. These poems are personal. They are an attempt to articulate the desires of a speaker who is in a constant state of trying to understand the world and the obsessive concerns that decorate her life: think memory, think past, think brother, think sex, think nature, empathy, imagination, abortion, old dog, abortion, love, all of which show up time and time and again throughout the collection. Touch and to be touched, to be whole and yet to break. These poems, perhaps, approach what it means to be alive, and even more specific, what it means to be alive and working through the aftermath of the past and day-to-day that for the speaker often feels broken and incomplete.

The object of this research project is to analyze the cultural, political and social integration of draft resisters and deserters living in Vancouver within the Canadian radical protest scene of the 1960s. In particular, it will investigate how refugees’ national and cultural identity, their own preconceptions of Canadian life and their own emotional response to their new environment either helped or hindered their attempts to engage in radical politics. War evaders involved the groups The Vancouver American Deserters Committee and Vancouver Yippie! showed divergent degrees of willingness to adapt their national and political identity to their new surroundings, and this had a direct impact on their ability to interact with the various political scenes springing up around the city. Using sociological theory and primary material (including letters, pamphlets, audio-visual material, newspaper articles and interviews) this study will prove that the maintenance of a solely American draft exile identity was in fact detrimental to an individual’s ability to engage in radical protest, and that a process of Canadianization was crucial to retaining some semblance of political relevance.

En kvalitativ semiotisk analys har genomförts av reklambilderna från skateboardtidingen Big Brother. Syftet med undersökningen var att studera reklambilderna i Big Brother med fokus på representation av kvinnorna. Därav följde frågeställningen "Hur representeras kvinnan i reklambilderna från Big Brother utifrån ett semiotiskt perspektiv". Urvalet av materialet bestod utav fem reklambilder där bildernas tecken analyserades kvalitativt med fokus på blick och posering. Genom att fokusera på dessa tecken i undersökningen blev huvudresultatet att kvinnornas karaktärsdrag blev reducerade till att bli betraktade av en utomstående blick. Därmed konnoterade dessa tecken Big Brother läsare som väsentliga betraktare i kvinnornas representation.

More recently, planned mentoring has become an important form of intervention with young people (Philip, 2003). Although mentoring can be an effective strategy for dealing with youth, the mentoring is only as good as the relationship that develops out of the process between mentors and mentees and the match that is made between the two parties. The number of mentor programmes that is running continues to grow yet the quality of these programmes remains unknown as this area lacks agreed upon sets of standards and / bench marks that could be used to determine the effectiveness of these programmes (Sipe, 1988 -1995). The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the mentors' perceptions of the effectiveness of a mentor training programme run by Big Brother Big Sister South Africa.

Background: Family members of people with eating disorders are often involved in caregiving. To better understand the impact on them, outcomes such as burden, distress, and less frequently quality of life (QoL) are taken into consideration. Despite advancements in the knowledge base surrounding the experiences of adult and parental caregivers of individuals with eating disorders, particularly Anorexia Nervosa, there is a scarcity of qualitative exploration from the sibling perspective, particularly that of adolescent siblings. Objectives: The systematic review aimed to identify research and synthesise findings relating to informal caregivers’ quantitative ratings of quality of life in the context of eating disorders. The primary study aimed to explore in detail the lived experience of adolescent siblings with a brother or sister with Bulimia Nervosa or Eating-Disorder-Not-Otherwise-Specified. Method: Applying a priori inclusion and exclusion criteria to papers identified from a combination of systematic searches of electronic databases and hand searches of other pertinent literature, revealed eight studies to be included for review. Within the qualitative study, eight semi-structured interviews were carried out with siblings (aged 12-19-years) who had a brother or sister with an eating disorder. An interpretative phenomenological analysis approach was utilised to analyse interview data. Results: The review highlighted low ratings for aspects of quality of life for informal caregivers of individuals with eating disorders, and some emerging comparative and subgroup differences. Three super-ordinate themes emerged from the qualitative exploration: Sibling Identity, The Vulnerable Social ‘Self’, and Intra- and Inter-Personal Coping. Discussion: Overall the findings provide particular insight into the quality life of informal caregivers and the unique experiences, feelings and various roles of adolescent siblings of people with eating disorders. Implications regarding caregiver support and the needs of siblings specifically are considered. Strengths and limitations, as well as future research possibilities are outlined for both the systematic review and empirical study.
