ABSTRACT Modern business organizations experience increasing challenges in the development and evolution of their enterprise systems. Typical problems include legacy re-engineering, systems integration/interoperability, and the architecting of the enterprise. At the heart of all these problems is enterprise modeling. Many enterprise modeling approaches have been proposed in the literature with some based on ontology. Few however adopt a foundational ontology to underpin a range of enterprise models in a consistent and coherent manner. Fewer still take data-driven re-engineering as their natural starting point for modeling. This is the approach taken by Business Object Reference Ontology (BORO). It has two closely intertwined components: a foundational ontology and a re-engineering methodology. These were originally developed for the re-engineering of enterprise systems and subsequently evolved into approaches to enterprise architecture and systems integration. Together these components are used to systematically unearth reusable and generalized business patterns from existing data. Most of these patterns have been developed for the enterprise context and have been successfully applied in several commercial projects within the financial, defense, and oil and gas industries. BORO's foundational ontology is grounded in philosophy and its metaontological choices (including perdurantism, extensionalism, and possible worlds) follow well-established theories. BORO's re-engineering methodology is rooted in the philosophical notion of grounding; it emerged from the practice of deploying its foundational ontology and has been refined over the last 25 years. This paper presents BORO and its application to enterprise modeling.

The behavior of boron during the early evolution of the Solar System provides the foundation for how boron reservoirs become established in terrestrial planets. The abundance of boron in the Sun is depleted relative to adjacent light elements, a result of thermal nuclear reactions that destroy boron atoms. Extant boron was primarily generated by spallation reactions. In the initial materials condensing from the solar nebula, boron was predominantly incorporated into plagioclase. Boron abundances in the terrestrial planets exhibit variability, as illustrated by B/Be. During planetary formation and differentiation, boron is redistributed by fluids at low temperature and during crystallization of magma oceans at high temperature.

The article analyzes private art collecting in 1990s–2000s in Ukraine. It is important to mention that collecting works of art in Ukraine of the time indicated in the article does not have comprehensive coverage. The complexity of the study of this issue is also due to the closeness and limitation of access to private collections. The collapse of the USSR, the transition from a totalitarian regime to democracy and the establishment of a market economy in Ukraine contributed to the formation and creation of private collections of artistic works. At this time, three main branches of non-state collecting begin to form: private collections, corporate collections of institutions (banks, insurance companies) and foundations. In the early 1990s the practice of collecting works by banks came to Ukraine from the West. Ukrincombank, Southern Bank, Gradobank, etc. were involved in that work. The interest of private individuals in forming their own collections also begins with Ukraine’s acquisition of Independence, but gains momentum in the early 2000s. The art collections were represented by E. Dymshyts, L. Bereznitsky, A. Adamovsky, I. Voronov, V. Pinchuk and others. One of the most important collections began to be initiated by Boris and Tatiana Hrynyov family of in 1996. Their idea of the collection arose from the concept of Kharkiv artists. In the circle of their interests — the art of Soviet nonconformists and Ukrainian contemporary art. Foundations of art appeared in Ukraine after the proclamation of Independence in 1991. These are non-governmental and non-profit organizations, established by private or corporate enti- ties. Important foundations in Ukraine, that have their own collections of art, are Soviart, Alexander Feldman Foundation, Stedley Art Foundation etc. The collections of the 1990s and 2000s are very important for the history of Ukrainian art and collecting. The collectors of this period have played a key role in preserving the artistic heritage of Independent Ukraine.

Streszczenie:
The direct discharge of boron mud poses significant environmental hazards to soil and groundwater. Despite extensive research efforts, the reprocessing of boron mud has not yielded significant advancements. Recently, the development of magnesium cement has spurred interest in the reutilization of boron mud. However, the direct treatment of boron mud remains challenging, necessitating pre-treatment in most studies to achieve substantial results. Consequently, research on the direct incorporation of untreated boron mud is scarce. This study explores the feasibility of using uncalcined boron mud as a base material in basic magnesium sulfate cement (BMSC), composed of lightly calcined magnesia and magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. The effects of varying boron mud content on the compressive strength of the BMSC system were investigated. The results indicate that the 5·1·7 phase is the primary strength phase of BMSC. When the boron mud content is 30%, the uncalcined boron mud has a minimal impact on the formation of the 5·1·7 phase. Additionally, the 28 days compressive strength of BMSC-B30 showed a slight difference compared to the control group BMSC-C, registering at 66.7 MPa. TG-DSC analysis revealed that the presence of a small amount of boron mud inhibits the micro-expansion trend of the BMSC structure. Furthermore, XRD and SEM analyses confirmed that the addition of uncalcined boron mud does not significantly alter the phase structure of the 5·1·7 phase in BMSC. This study provides a foundational basis for the long-term development of direct boron mud treatment.

Structural failure has been recently happenings mostly in the commercially populated states along the coastal line in Nigeria. As a result, an open field at a chosen location in Abuja, Nigeria, was investigated. For the purpose of this study, test bores were drilled and Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were conducted at every 1.5 m interval up to a maximum depth of 12.0 m with the bearing pressure ranging between 20 kN/m2 and 1000 kN/m2 . 3 test bores’ were drilled within the plot location, and samples were obtained at the test bores locations for laboratory analysis. Findings revealed that subsurface lithology found at the site within the explored depths of 0.0 ~ 12.0 m is mostly silty sand, laterite, sandy clay, silty clay, clayey sand, and weathered rock. The findings from the sub-soils of the different places and their bearing pressures were computed with SPT N value. Building foun dations may be rigid raft foundations at a depth of 2.0 meters below the present ground level, according to bearing capacity values that range from 20 kN/m2 to 60 kN/m2 at 1.5 to 3.0 meters. The recommended building foundations take into account the sub-soil’s characteristics at the drilling places at a depth of between 1.0 and 3.0 meters. The structure might also be supported by frictional piles buried 10 meters beneath the surface.

Both alumina and boron carbide have good hardness and strength, and are widely used in production and life, industrial manufacturing, and military defense. However, due to the insufficiency of research at this stage and the lack of technical means, it is difficult to prepare alumina-boron carbide composite powder with good coating and ultra high strength through large-scale batch production. Therefore, this experiment wants to obtain a relatively good performance of coated Al2O3/B4C cermet by hydrothermal method through different experimental parameter ratios. Through the experimental results and analysis, the following conclusions are obtained. The most suitable concentration of aluminum nitrate is 0.1 mol/l. The low concentration affects the formation of alumina particles. The concentration is too high and prone to agglomeration. Through the optimization of hydrothermal synthesis concentration, a composite of Al2O3/B4C composite with good nanoencapsulated structure was obtained. The composite powder was pure in composition and high in specific surface area, which lays a foundation for solving the low-temperature preparation of high-density boron carbide ceramics.

185 years ago, in 1834 the first really working and sufficiently powerful electric motor was assembled by the young scientist, Moritz Herman von Jacobi in Königsberg (now Russian city of Kaliningrad). The article is dedicated to the life and scientific achievements of the scientist who became known under the name of Boris Jacobi after he moved to Russia and took the Russian first name. His merits, in particular, include development of a method of electroplating, that laid foundation for the entire field of applied electrochemistry. It’s worth noting that the scientist revealed the results of the study in publicly available, or, in modern terms, open access publication. Jacobi worked in different fields. He invented a series of devices to measure electric resistance , called by him voltagometer (rheochord, or slide-wire). His research activities were also successful in the field of telegraphy, he invented synchronously acting telegraph device with direct (without further decoding) indication of the letters and numbers at the receiver and first ev er letter-printing telegraph device, he administered the project of construction of first cable lines in St. Petersburg and between St. Petersburg and Tsarskoe selo (Emperors’ residence). Jacobi developed galvanic batteries, anti-ship mines of new type, initiated creation of galvanic teams within pioneer units of the Russian army. Boris Jacobi initiated and managed unitage, establishment of metric system, and of weight and measure standards in Russia. Thanks to numerous scientific achievements Jacobi received well-deserved recognition of his contemporaries.

Streszczenie:
Pastoral Australia tells the story of the expansion of Australia's pastoral industry, how it drove European settlement and involved Aboriginal people in the new settler society. The rural life that once saw Australia 'ride on the sheep's back' is no longer what defines us, yet it is largely our history as a pastoral nation that has endured in heritage places and which is embedded in our self-image as Australians. The challenges of sustaining a pastoral industry in Australia make a compelling story of their own. Developing livestock breeds able to prosper in the Australian environment was an ongoing challenge, as was getting wool and meat to market. Many stock routes, wool stores, abattoirs, wharf facilities, railways, roads, and river and ocean transport systems that were developed to link the pastoral interior with the urban and market infrastructure still survive. Windmills, fences, homesteads, shearing sheds, bores, stock yards, travelling stock routes, bush roads and railheads all changed the look of the country. These features of our landscape form an important part of our heritage. They are symbols of a pastoral Australia, and of the foundations of our national identity, which will endure long into the future.

Born in 1908 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Michael DeBakey is the eldest of six children of Lebanese immigrants. He enjoys conspicuous academic success as a youth and then medical school, displaying intelligence and originality. DeBakey comes under the tutelage of surgery professor Alton Ochsner. He also spends a year training in Europe. Debakey and Ochsner publish important research papers. In World War Two DeBakey is assigned to the Office of the Army Surgeon General, where he excels in administration, rising to the rank of Colonel. He serves beyond the war’s end, contributing to the foundation of postwar federal medical research and veterans’ care. In 1948 he becomes Chair of Surgery at Baylor University medical school in Houston. The department focuses clinical and research efforts on vascular diseases, and leads a revolution in the surgical approach to these problems. DeBakey’s own family suffers from his devotion to his work. In the 1960s DeBakey’s fame grows. His lab pursues an artificial heart. Colleague Denton Cooley implants the first artificial heart with a device taken from DeBakey’s lab, and a forty-year rift between these two giants ensues. DeBakey becomes President, then Chancellor of the Baylor medical school. After the death of his first wife, he remarries in the 1970s. His fame and influence are worldwide. DeBakey operates on the Shah of Iran, and is consulted on the heart surgery of Boris Yeltsin. He is awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2008, and dies shortly afterward at age 99, a universally-admired legend.

Martha Ullman West illustrates how American ballet developed over the course of the twentieth century from an aesthetic originating in the courts of Europe into a stylistically diverse expression of a democratic culture. West places at center stage two artists who were instrumental to this story: Todd Bolender and Janet Reed. Lifelong friends, Bolender (1914–2006) and Reed (1916–2000) were part of a generation of dancers who navigated the Great Depression, World War II, and the vibrant cultural scene of postwar New York City. They danced in the works of choreographers Lew and Willam Christensen, Eugene Loring, Agnes de Mille, Catherine Littlefield, Ruthanna Boris, and others who West argues were just as responsible for the direction of American ballet as the legendary George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. The stories of Bolender, Reed, and their contemporaries also demonstrate that the flowering of American ballet was not simply a New York phenomenon. West includes little-known details about how Bolender and Reed laid the foundations for Seattle’s Pacific Northwest Ballet in the 1970s and how Bolender transformed the Kansas City Ballet into a highly respected professional company soon after. Passionate in their desire to dance and create dances, Bolender and Reed committed their lives to passing along their hard-won knowledge, training, and work. This book celebrates two unsung trailblazers who were pivotal to the establishment of ballet in America from one coast to the other.

Abstract Breakdowns in the value creation process in joint ventures QVs) often stem from problems in managing interdependencies. A lack of trust between partners is one such problem (Borys and Jemison, 1989). Our assessment of the extant literature indicates that, despite substantial conceptual and empirical writings, confusion exists regarding the interpretation of research findings in the area of JV trust. A key reason why this confusion exists is that researchers have devoted little attention to issues of level. Building on the theoretical foundation of the ‘cooperating behaviour’ perspective on inter-organizational alliances (Faulkner and de Rand, chap. 1, above), the objective of this chapter is to explicate conceptual, measurement, and analysis issues associated with studying JV trust at the interpersonal, inter-group, and inter-firm levels.

The study of biological interactions with two-dimensional nanomaterials provides the scientific foundation for identifying and managing development risks in both biomedical and non-biomedical technologies. The purpose of this chapter is to carry out an analysis of the toxicity of two-dimensional materials in biomedical applications or in other applications where they could have contact with biological entities. The toxicity of graphene, graphdiyne, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), MXenes, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), graphitic phase C3N4, phosphorene (BP), exfoliated pnictogens (antimonene, arsenene, bismuthene), Xenes (borophene), and layered metal oxides (LMOs) are analyzed. The different mechanisms involved in the interactions were identified to propose solutions to reduce or eliminate the adverse effects of their cytotoxicity. Future research topics that should be developed to ensure the safe use of two-dimensional nanomaterials in biomedical applications, before their use in commercial applications, are discussed.

This chapter is based on a survey conducted by the Boris Nemtsov Foundation in August and September 2016. It examined patterns of media consumption of Russian-speakers in Germany in relation to their age, time of immigration and language proficiency. On the basis of the outcomes, the chapter suggests two different typologies of Russian speakers in Germany, according to their degree of integration and their political outlook. Against the backdrop of recent debates about these groups’ alleged affinity to rightist and populist political positions in Germany, preferences in Russian-language media consumption within these groups are correlated to their voting patterns in recent German elections. Although these voting patterns do not deviate significantly from those of the average German electorate, the German government on the one hand, and the German populists on the other, have started to woo the Russian-speakers. Both seem to view the Russian-speakers as a homogeneous group, largely ignoring the significant diversity in outlooks among German Russophones.

Charles Henry Gifford (1913–2003), a Fellow of the British Academy, was a scholar-critic whose death at the age of ninety brought home what true piety is, in contemplation of his supple stamina and of his own discriminating piety towards the literary geniuses whose presences he owned: Leo Tolstoy and George Seferis, Boris Pasternak and Samuel Johnson, Dante and T. S. Eliot. He was a teacher for thirty years at the University of Bristol, a reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement, as essayist for Grand Street, and general editor (for Cambridge University Press) of the Cambridge Studies in Russian Literature. Educated at Harrow and then at Christ Church, Oxford, Gifford gained his BA in 1936, securing those foundations in Classics that were once held to be indispensable to all humane literary studies. Though he changed his mind as to whether he was cut out to be a poet, he never dispensed with what underpinned his love of poetry, the trained analytical and synthesising powers that his study of classical literature had helped to establish within him.

Elected in 1920 as the first chairman of the Union, Bunin and his associates laid the foundations for a unique community of Russian writers in exile, defining the goals and objectives of the Union and developing its Charter. It was the Charter that later played a special role in the lives of many writers, including Bunin himself. However, less than a year later, Ivan Bunin famously resigned from the newly elected Board, where Pavel Milyukov then took the lead. The paper considers Bunin’s participation in the daily life of the Union and the fact the writer, a Nobel laureate, was elected as its Honorary Member in 1933. Another theme is the post-war agitation and split among the members of the Union, the circumstances of Ivan Bunin’s withdrawal from the Union of Russian Writers and Journalists, and his break with the new chairman of the Board Boris Zaitsev. The paper also gives a look into the ways the Union sought to perpetuate the memory of Bunin after the writer’s death. The materials used are the archive documents of the Union of Russian Writers and Journalists in Paris, previously unpublished.

The Agra-Lucknow Expressway Project extends the connectivity of the state capital with the national capital with High-Speed Corridor. The proposed expressway starts on the Agra Ring Road near village Madra, and ends on SH-40 (Lucknow – Mohan- Hasanganj – Rasulabad road) outskirts of Lucknow. A Major bridge structure of total length 90 m is built for the physical obstacles without closing the way underneath a body of water for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle on the SAI River. The project area is covered by a deep layer of alluvium spread range from sandy to the clayey loam by the slow-moving rivers of the Ganges system. Well foundations are generally preferred in such type of strata which are prone to collapse. Since construction of well foundation is time consuming, pile foundation were proposed to complete project within time.

In this case study, the collapse of the pile bore in liquefiable soil has been observed at abutment ‘A2’of the major bridge, at scheduled chainage 265+300. The bores in pile group collapse loose clayey sandy strata. This paper discusses the reasons of bore failure and the phenomenon of actual failure at liquefiable deposits. After studying the actual failure pattern some significant remarks are find out and accordingly the new pile group arrangement is suggested. The new design considering dead load, earth pressure, superimposed dead load, Live load, wind and seismic loading is based on rivet theory. Accordingly the numbers of pile are increased in the foundation to satisfy the design requirement

Integrated quantum photonic circuits is an emerging area that requires efficient coupling of quantum light sources to waveguides and optical resonators. So far, much effort is devoted to developing on-chip systems from 3D crystals such as diamond or gallium arsenide. In this work, room-temperature operation of quantum emitters in on-chip photonic waveguides and cavities is demonstrated using single photon emitters embedded in layered hexagonal boron nitride. The results serve as foundation for integrating layered materials to on-chip components and realizing integrated quantum photonic circuitry.

Streszczenie:
Russian liberal heritage, first of all, the scientific works of the famous Russian legal expert Boris Chicherin, is the fundamental basis for the developing science of human rights in modern Russia; it is from this position that this article examines Chicherin’s work. The main purpose of the study is to identify Chicherin’s priorities in shaping new progressive ideas for Russia and to examine the transformation of his views. In examining and analysing Chicherin’s liberal ideas, historical, logical and comparative methods were applied. It has been concluded that Chicherin set the foundation of the liberal theory of human rights, elaborated a set of progressive ideas and a blueprint of reforms, which determined the formation of several generations of liberals in autocratic Russia and are still relevant today. Defending the priority of private law over public law, Chicherin argued: a civil order based on private law must always be free from state absorption. He was among the first in Russia to develop the idea of a constitutional state in relation with the creation of free institutions and the formation of a high intellectual and moral level of society. By developing the new policy of ‘liberal measures and strong state authority’ as an optimal model for Russian state and society, Chicherin gave rise to the formation of political science in Russia. The author believes that the analysis and discussion of Chicherin’s academic writings in university classrooms and at academic conferences contribute to the formation of a culture of human rights, a liberal worldview, a new generation of reformers, and the advancement of the emerging science of human rights.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Linear wave theories and stochastic linear wave spectra are foundational to ocean and coastal engineering. However, there are some important limitations with linear wave theories, and some of which were originally observed experimentally more than a century ago by John Scott Russell. Nonlinearities will cause the linear wave spectra to evolve in time and space as waves move across a basin, or as waves evolve in the ocean and coastal waters, and in coastal channels. Using a nonlinear wave theory can therefore allow researchers and engineers to better capture the dynamic nature of the ocean waves. Common classical nonlinear wave theories include the (2+1)D KP equation and the (1+1)D Korteweg-de Fries (KdV) equation. As described by Osborne [2010], the invariance nature of these nonlinear wave equations can be characterized in an exact manner by their corresponding nonlinear frequency or wave-number spectrum parallel to the linear case. A nonlocal dbar model was used by Ablowitz, Bar-Yaacov and Fokas [1983], and Zakharov and Manakov [1984] to solve the KP equation by the inverse scattering transform (IST). In this study we discuss the use of the nonlocal dbar problem (NDP) to compute the soliton solutions by the inverse scattering transform, and finite-genus solutions to the KdV equation, and undular bores (dispersive shockwaves). We also discuss the use of NDP to produce soliton solutions and the calculation of periodic finite-genus solutions to the KP equation using Riemann theta functions and complex algebraic geometry.

Streszczenie:
What is a ‘science superpower’? Sarah Main and Graeme Reid explore reactions to the term from stakeholders across the UK and examine alternative versions of a future in which ‘science superpower’ status is achieved. Their report is published today by the Foundation for Science and Technology. Jeremy Hunt, Rishi Sunak, Boris Johnson, George Freeman and other senior figures in government use the phrase ‘science superpower’ as a headline for ambitious, visionary science policy. It is a potent phrase but open to varied interpretation. By exploring scenarios in which the UK has achieved ‘science superpower’ status by different means, the authors stimulate debate about the desired characteristics of this status and highlight the choices facing policy-makers on the path to become a more research-intensive UK.
