This thesis is a collection of nine short stories about real people dealing with unreal problems. In one story, a small-town man answers a knock at his door, only to find three wisemen, who have followed a star and proclaimed him as their new messiah. In another, a reporter travels across the snowy length of Canada looking to interview people who have witnessed the Virgin Mary materialize above Toronto. Deranged Egyptologists, vampires with diseased blood, wacky witches, and unhappy mediums all inhabit tales whose landscapes span the distance between Chattanooga, Tennessee and the afterlife.

Streszczenie:
Teaching ESL continues to pose a big challenge in most schools in Zambia. This is due to the paucity of teaching resources. While the number of schools has increased, there has not been a corresponding increase in funding due to economic reasons. This study arose from the desire to find alternative resources to teach English as a second language effectively within the communicative language teaching (CLT) framework. A review of available literature has shown that literature can help students to acquire the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Streszczenie:
This book collects thirteen short stories by ‘Saki’ (Hector Hugh Munro): ten in their original periodical versions and three that had been forgotten until recently. The first ten were rewritten when they were reprinted as part of the volume The Chronicles of Clovis (1911). Reconstructing the composition/publishing process from Munro’s correspondence with his new publisher (John Lane at The Bodley Head), I argue that the title was imposed on Munro, who acquiesced by writing more stories featuring his Clovis character and by reworking older works so that Clovis appeared in them. The intention in doing so was to give the collection more of a thematic unity, and thereby anticipate the difficulty that publishers felt they had in interesting the reading public in volumes of unconnected stories. Munro also made another concession to his publisher in a significantly rewritten and expanded version of his political fantasy ‘Ministers of Grace’, which unfortunately only obscured the satirical thrust of the original version. Similarly, readers will likely prefer the originals of the other stories before they were distorted to include Clovis. ‘Mrs. Pendercoet’s Lost Identity’ is adduced here, being an example of a contemporaneous story that could be given a differently named protagonist because it was not destined to be part of The Chronicles of Clovis. ‘The Romance of Business’, conversely, is a later example of a Clovis story, unusual because it was written on commission. These two rediscovered stories are accompanied by another, ‘The Optimist’, which showcases Munro’s ability to cater for a wider public by writing in a more naturalistic and serious way.

Streszczenie:
Elsie Clews Parsons (1874-1941) and her husband Herbert Parsons (1869-1925) present a very different pattern of conflict and accommodation in a marriage shaped by the wife’s determination to work. Both Elsie and Herbert came from wealthy and prominent New York families. When they married in 1900, after a six-year courtship, Elsie was an atheist, a feminist, and a social rebel who openly challenged female stereotypes and traditional roles. A Ph.D. in sociology, she was teaching at Barnard College and insisted on keeping her job. Herbert, a deeply religious and rather staid man, was a successful lawyer and politician. Although Elsie and Herbert seemed mismatched, I argue, in contrast to other of Elsie’s biographers, that their marriage was a love match. Their troubles began after Herbert was elected to Congress in 1904. Elsie gave up her teaching job, moved to Washington with their two children, and had four more children (two died shortly after birth). When the controversial views she espoused in her first book set off a public furor that offended and embarrassed Herbert, she stopped publishing under her own name. A few years later, she was wracked with jealousy when she thought he had fallen in love with another woman. Elsie and Herbert did not divorce, but they led increasingly separate lives after they returned to New York in 1911. Elsie organized her personal and domestic life around two new careers. After establishing a foothold in the feminist, bohemian intellectual world in Greenwich Village, she became a sought-after, influential social critic, writing for The Masses and The New Republic. Then she connected with Franz Boas’s professional circle and became a highly respected anthropologist, studying indigenous peoples in the American Southwest, the Caribbean, and South America. Elsie had two lengthy love affairs, with the architect Grant LaFarge, and the novelist Robert Herrick. She deliberately chose lovers who – unlike Herbert – were adventurous, interested in her work, and eager to travel with her. In the late teens and twenties, her relationship with Herbert gradually improved, in part because he took on more responsibility for their four surviving children. His unexpected death in 1925, while she was involved with Herrick, was a blow for Elsie. Deeply in love with Elsie, Herrick wrote about her in several novels and short stories in the 1920s. Initially supportive of her work, he became increasingly jealous of her success and deeply angry at being reduced to what he thought was a subordinate role in her life. His last book about her, published in 1932, several years after their affair ended, cruelly disparaged her and her work. Elsie was repeatedly disappointed by the men in her life, but she never stopped trying to implement her feminist vision of a more equitable and intimate relationship grounded in work rather than domestic life.

Abstract The youngest of the recognized literary forms, and in other ways the most ‘modern’ in tendency, was the short story. Introducing her anthology, The Faber Book of Modern Stories (1937), Elizabeth Bowen highlighted this youthfulness, likening it to that of the cinema: The short story is a young art: as we now know it, it is the child of this century. Poetic tautness and clarity are so essential to it that it may be said to stand at the edge of prose; in its use of action it is nearer to drama than to the novel. The cinema, itself busy with a technique, is of the same generation: in the last thirty years the two arts have been accelerating together.

Abstract Lo u Is E E Ro RI c H ‘ s Love Medicine (1984)1 is most often classified as a novel. In fact, if we have any doubts about its genre, the title page informs us: “Love Medicine: A Novel by Louise Erdrich.” When asked what they thought about the fact that some reviewers of the “novel” insisted on labeling it a “collection of short stories,” Erdrich and her husband-collaborator Michael Dorris were not particularly interested in the topic. “It’s a novel in that it all moves toward some sort of resolution,” explained Erdrich. “It has a large vision that no one of the stories approaches,” added Dorris.2 In addition, even though half of the fourteen chapters of the first edition had been published previously as short stories in literary journals or popular magazines, Erdrich and Dorris insisted that they had adapted these individual stories significantly in order to create, extend, or enhance thematic, structural, and other literary connections.3 Erdrich, who describes herself as “a person who thought in terms of stories and poems and short-things,” credits Dorris’s influence for how the “book became a novel.”4 “By the time readers get half-way through the book,” noted Dorris, “it should be clear to them that this is not an unrelated, or even a related, set of short stories, but parts of a larger scheme” (Wong, 212). Length, an expansive vision, and some sense of unity seem to inform their notion of what constitutes a novel.

Scott intended to include ‘My Aunt Margaret’s Mirror’, a supernatural tale, and ‘The Tapestried Chamber’, a ghost story, in the second series of Chronicles of the Canongate. His publisher rejected them. Scott eventually sold the works for inclusion in The Keepsake, an elegant gift book. As communal fora for short fiction such ornate books did not allow for the same anonymity as the experimental, character-driven periodicals in which Scott first explored the shorter mode. Gift-book stories and poems might reasonably be construed as safe, homely works attached to dependable authors. However, these highly inventive stories are not cast-offs but recastings finely attuned to a bespoke word-and-image forum. To keep readers interested, Scott would need to employ some new tricks – as well as the old ones – within a condensed space. His Gothic gimmicks – a magic lantern show and a family ghost – apparently have little impact on the plots. But the unsettling effect they exert on the reader is real enough, thanks to the trusted skills of the narrators.

In the Introduction, the author introduces the core concepts of the book and provides a brief description of each chapter. Using a dataset of one hundred anthologies, the author identifies seven prominent writers of African American short fiction. Technology is also used for “cultural geo-tagging,” a process of identifying, quantifying, and organizing the geographic markers across several stories. Geo-tagging is used to understand how Black writers make cultural spaces integral to their artwork. Beyond mentioning various places and settings, writers explore locations through the characters that they present. A focus on geography prompts consideration for what the author refers to as homegrown and outsider characters. The author establishes an approach that focuses on geographic settings and the positionality of characters, presenting special opportunities for considering vital elements that make short stories such captivating compositions.

The book opens in explaining that this very short introduction to American cultural history emphasizes culture as a driving force in American history. Cultural history is the history of stories, their origins, transmission, and significance in time. However, no work of cultural history can disentangle the cultural from political, economic, and social processes of change. The relationship between culture and identity needs to be understood along with the spatial context of cultural production and its physical location within distinct geographies. American culture has been the sum of diverse global influences, from almost every part of the world, but it has not contained itself within national boundaries.

Streszczenie:
The goal of the paper is to analyze the dialectic level of the collection of short stories Tri čvora na trepavici – Sećanje na krilato detinjstvo by Ljubivoje Ršumović. Our primary interest lies in the way the idiomatic characteristics of this work, written in the Shtokavian dialect, are manifested through the speech of its protagonists. We have singled out, classified and analyzed phonetic-phonological, morphological and syntactic dialectisms. As the most significant phonetic-phonological dialectisms, we present the Jekavian replacement of the former vowel jat, eliminating vowels from the initial and final position, unstable consonants h and f, as well as the phoneme v in an intervocalic position. On the morphological level, we have noticed suffixes of the archaic hard base in the declension of pronouns and adjectives, the change of the onomastic-hypocoristic model such as Jovo–Jova–Jovu/Jovov; as well as the regular occurrence of the infinitive in its full form. The most significant syntactic characteristics on a dialectic level are seen in the usage of verb forms, namely those for expressing the past. The dialect which the characters of this book use belongs to the southern regions of the Shtokavian dialect and as such fits into the areal of the Eastern Herzegovinian dialect. Keeping in mind that dialectisms in the characters’ speech of the novel are only one of the examples of characterization, they prove to be a strong stylistic feature. By using them, Ršumović brings to life his forgotten childhood heroes, presenting them to the contemporary readers and introducing them to a past world.

There is published research that justifies that teaching-learning based on mathematical modeling, through problem based learning methodology, in a real context and that stimulates the use of information and communication technologies [ICT] tools will produce many benefits. For this reason, two mathematics teachers recently created the MAtMO project through an account on a social network. In this digital support, pedagogical experiences that are being carried out from the 1st year to higher education have been disseminated, because it is understood that this approach can and must be transversal. It is a page aimed to students, parents, teachers, researchers and anyone interested in these topics. Till the present moment, the following have been published: (1) a challenge for 6th grade students on calculating the purchase price of a grass mat; (2) short videos, produced by students of the Master in Teaching of the 1st Cycle, within the scope of Mathematics´ Didactics course, in which they present a daily problem and the respective mathematical model that solves it; (3) an interdisciplinary modeling activity, integrated in the Go-Lab platform; (4) an activity on the calculation of areas of two-dimensional objects using integral calculation; (5) the presentation of the book Contos e Contas, consisting of a set of stories written by students and proposals of activities involving mathematical contents. The research interests with this project are: (1) to understand how ICT can contribute to the promotion of learning in mathematical modeling; (2) to understand how publications (and interactions) on a social network contents based on mathematical modeling, promotes students' motivation. Created on March, 14/2021, so far, 2090 people have been reached, there are 1356 interactions with publications, 295 followers and 278 likes on the page.
