Daniel Panzac's newest book is both refreshing and sad. It is refreshing because, so often, books on Mediterranean commerce tend to paint a picture of the eternal sea, where ships ply their trade in 1700 much as they had in 900. Panzac's book is a story instead of abrupt shifts and the ability of individuals—in this case, Muslim North Africans—to respond to new commercial opportunities by venturing into previously untested waters. It is a sad book because it documents, in great detail, the ultimate exclusion of this same group of people from the ports of southern Europe, particularly Marseilles. This exclusion was one of the reasons that the North Africans returned to piracy. The French, of course, used the extirpation of piracy as one of the main justifications for their invasion and subsequent occupation of Algeria in 1830.

This article discusses two children's books, The Whale Watchers (2022), written by Dougie Poynter and illustrated by Amberin Huq, and Calling the Whales (2023), written by Jasbinder Bilan and illustrated by Skylar White, as well as one picture book, The Tale of the Whale (2022), written by Karen Swann and illustrated by Padmacandra. Highlighting the relationship between children and whales, the article draws upon ecocriticism and ecology in the context of children’s literature. Arguing that these narratives present both species as climate activists, the article also explores the significance of the text, not only for the purpose of exposing environmental issues, but by also contributing to environmental literacy and pedagogy. This article aims to conclude that whales’ representation throughout the narratives bestows ocean awareness, leading the children to experience and engage with the sea.

Since its inception, it has been recognized by viewers and has set off a ratings boom at one point. The narrative structure in the drama is mainly a three-act narrative, incorporating innovative narrative structure elements such as fractal and restructured time settings, reverse dual itinerary hedging, and the closed ending of the classic narrative, making the whole and part of the TV narrative structure more reasonable and innovative.

Oswald Spengler (1880-1936) was one of the most influential philosophers of history between WW I and WW II. His book “The Decline of the West” (1918) made him famous. In this book Spengler attested that the phase of the West as a productive culture is over and that the phase of civilization has started. In the years after the publication of his main work Spengler started to get more and more interested in Ancient History in its broadest sense. He argued against a Eurocentric view of history and suggested to reconsider our common understanding of history and its epochs. In the last part of the paper I try to show how Spengler conceptualized his universal history by the example of a lecture given by him on the war chariot and its influence on world history.

This article is a summary of the Dalrymple Lectures given in 2009. It reviews the archaeology of north-west European economics, and then contrasts this with the new evidence for 7th- to 9th-century long-distance commerce in the Adriatic Sea region and its implications for the changing economic circumstances in peninsula Italy. The essay attempts to take a new stance on my book Dark Age Economics (1982) and, using new archaeological evidence, offers new interpretations of the rise of the Carolingian economy as well as the limited capacity of the western Middle Byzantine economy.

Sign-Based Construction Grammar (sbcg) is, on the one hand, a formalized version of Berkeley Construction Grammar (bcg), and, on the other hand, a further development of constructionist Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (hpsg). The volume edited by Hans Boas and Ivan Sag is the first book length presentation of the framework. Its centerpiece is a 130-page synopsis of the theory by Ivan Sag. The other contributions to the volume provide background, justification, case studies, an extension to diachronic syntax and a presentation of the FrameNet Constructicon. This review gives a guided tour of the framework, explaining its central notions and assumptions, as well as the notation in which they are cast. It also compares the sbcg framework with other types of Construction Grammar and with hpsg. The case studies are summarized and briefly evaluated.

Dimitrie I. Ghica began translating – in late 19th century – from Greek into Romanian Herodotus’ The Histories, in four volumes. It was a tremendous effort carried out by the person who in 1880 was awarded by the Romanian Academy for having translated the 4th book of the work in question. Decades later, his name seems to have been forgotten; a couple of press articles managed to point out, though, aspects of his biography . Posterity does seem to have forgotten about him too soon. In the following lines, my endeavour is to econstruct – even partially – the biography of a person with an important diplomatic and literary activity.

The city of Rio de Janeiro is known by its natural beauties. The mountains and the sea make the city the postcard of Brazil. The sculpture of the carioca landscape is closely related to the augen gneiss, very resistant rock to the weathering and, for this reason, it stands out in the relief. It gives form for Sugar Loaf and Corcovado, for example. Augen gneiss was used in the construction of most of the historical buildings of the city, including museums and churches, many of them were built in the 19th century. It was used in the sculpture of ornaments, facades and frames of doors and windows. The exploitation of the augen gneiss was presented by Jean Baptiste Debret in his book "Voyage Pittoresque et Historique au Brésil". A picture of quarry is presented at Morro da Glória and describes the extraction method by slave labor. He informes that the augen gneiss is softer, less expensive and more easily exploited. It was destined, mainly, to the parts of the buildings that should be sculpted. This rock is still present in an important event of the history of the brazilian arts. Pedra do Sal, a stairway sculpted in the augen gneiss Downtown, was the place that African people met in the past to tell their histories, to do religious cults and to sing. In these meetings in Pedra do Sal samba was born

The Melian dialogue in the 5th book of Thucydides can be seen as one of the most important texts for political science. Two opposing political ideas are confronted by the historian: on the one hand Thucydides presents the Athenians as promoters of the idea of legitimacy of unlimited growth of power; on the other hand, there were the Melians who did not accept the ‘law of the stronger’. The Melians were conquered, and their arguments could not save them, but in the longer perspective the Athenian empire was destined to collapse. Through the dialogue, Thucydides compares the ‘law of the stronger’ ignoring the rights of others, and the appeal to justice by the weaker party trying to demonstrate their reasons to oppose the imperialist power.

A presente dissertação foi elaborada com o intuito de relatar os resultados dos trabalhos realizados durante o estágio na empresa Água das Pedras (VMPS), pertencente ao grupo SUPER BOCK GROUP (SBG). Este estágio decorreu durante os meses de fevereiro e junho de 2018, coincidindo com a abertura de uma nova linha de enchimento. Os objetivos deste estágio foram: a criação de um plano de manutenção preventiva para a linha de enchimento nova e a construção de um documento de controlo, para todas situações de não conformidade dos equipamentos com a Diretiva de Máquinas. No entanto dada a abertura da nova linha, houve a oportunidade de participar em mais trabalhos, pelo que também serão mencionados com mais detalhe. O plano de manutenção preventiva desenvolvido para a nova linha de enchimento foi traçado tendo em conta a participação das equipas da produção para efetuar tarefas de manutenção, para além da equipa de manutenção preventiva. Agendando tarefas simples como inspeções e limpezas para as equipas da produção, foi possível deixar a equipa de manutenção preventiva mais liberta para realizar tarefas mais complexas e que exigem um conhecimento profundo a nível de manutenção e sobre os equipamentos. As tarefas são agendadas de forma a que sejam efetuadas em alturas que a linha esteja parada por outros motivos, que não para as tarefas de manutenção preventiva, por exemplo, como quando se está a fazer a limpeza geral da linha ou a mudança de formato. O documento de controlo foi feito com o objetivo de ter um registo de todas as situações de não conformidade com a Diretiva de Máquinas existentes na fábrica. A informação contida nos relatórios das inspeções técnicas foi dividida por várias colunas diferentes, num cheiro Excel, incluindo um registo fotográ co de cada não conformidade. Permite também a utilização de ltros em cada coluna para identi car uma não conformidade em particular, o que vai facilitar o acompanhamento da resolução das situações de não conformidade.
The present work aims to report the results of the jobs performed during the internship in the company "Água das Pedras (VMPS)", which belongs to the SUPER BOCK GROUP (SBG). The internship took place during the months of February and June of 2018, date marked by the opening of a new lling line. The focus of the internship was: the development of a preventive maintenance plan for the new lling line and the development of a control document, for all the situations of non conformity with the Machinery Directive. However, with the opening of this new line, it was possible to make other improvements, which will also be mentioned with detail. The preventive maintenance plan developed for the new lling line was built taking into account the participation of the production teams besides the preventive maintenance team. Scheduling simple tasks, as inspections and cleansing, to the production teams, allows the preventive maintenance team to be more available to perform the more complex tasks which demand a deeper knowledge about maintenance and the equipment. The way the tasks are scheduled allows them to be performed when the line is stopped, for other reasons rather than the preventive maintenance tasks, like when the general cleansing is occurring or for the change of product. The control document was developed in order to keep record of all non-conformity situations with the Machines Directive in the factory. The information contained in the reports of technical inspections was divided into di erent columns in an Excel le, including a photographic record of each non-conformity. It also allows the use of lters in each column to identify a particular nonconformity, which will facilitate the monitoring of the resolution of non-conformities.

Unnecessary clash is caused through voltage dips or sags on both the utility and consumer sides. In order to correct voltage sag. In this Paper, a custom power Device ( DVR ) with voltage source converter (VSC) topology is used. A modified power device called a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is used to decrease power quality concerns in the electrical power system network and promote voltage stability. DVRs are normally installed in the delivery network between load feeders and sources. This study discusses a method of voltage sag correction unit vector template generation (UVTG)-based and a dynamic voltage restorer. The results are acquired following simulation with the MATLAB program.

It is tempting to try to reduce the history of the Mediterranean to a few common features, to attempt to define a ‘Mediterranean identity’ or to insist that certain physical features of the region have moulded human experience there (as Braudel strongly argued). Yet this search for a fundamental unity starts from a misunderstanding of what the Mediterranean has meant for the peoples who have inhabited its shores and islands, or have crossed its surface. Rather than searching for unity, we should note diversity. At the human level, this ethnic, linguistic, religious and political diversity was constantly subject to external influences from across the sea, and therefore in a constant state of flux. From the earliest chapters of this book, where the first settlers in Sicily were described, to the ribbon developments along the Spanish costas, the edges of the Mediterranean Sea have provided meeting-points for peoples of the most varied backgrounds who have exploited its resources and learned, in some cases, to make a living from transferring its products from better-endowed to ill-endowed regions. From within its waters came fish and salt, two ingredients of the much-traded garum sauce of ancient Rome, and the basis for the early prosperity of one of the greatest of Mediterranean cities, Venice. As predicted in the preface, fishermen have not featured prominently in this book, in part because the evidence they have left behind is often very slight, but in part too because fishermen seek what is by definition under the surface of the sea and are less likely to make contact with communities on the opposing shores of the Mediterranean. The great exceptions are within the narrows near Malta, where the Genoese established a colony at Tabarka on the coast of Tunisia between 1540 and 1742 specializing in coral-fishing, and where Tunisian fishermen have now joined Sicilian fleets in the matanza, the great seasonal slaughter of tuna. Even more than fish, which keeps well only after salting or drying, grain has long been the major product carried across the sea, originally grown around its shores or brought down from the Black Sea, but, by the seventeenth century, increasingly of north European origin.

This chapter provides a detailed account of the growth of the unregulated sealing industry in the Dependencies, in the same format as Chapter Two. It begins with a history of the discovery of South Georgia, and follows the arrival of American and British vessels in late eighteenth century. It follows a similar pattern in the Falklands history, where sealing excursions declined during European and American wars, only to return with vigor from 1810 onwards - devastating seal stocks by the 1820s. The South Georgian sealing industry continued to decline during the nineteenth century, with numerous failed excursions recorded. In counterbalance to this, the South Shetland Islands saw a rise in sealing. A rise in sealing occurred during the brief sea fur boom of the 1860s and 1870s, where the chapter concludes.

Abstract Roswell Hawks Lamson was a child of the frontier. Like so many American naval officers in World War II who came from the Midwest, Lamson spent his early years far from salt water. But perhaps the sea was in his blood. His father Jeremiah Lamson was born in Massachusetts, the descendant of a long line of New England Yankees, some of them seafarers, whose progenitor William Lamson settled at Ipswich in 1634. Roswell’s mother, nee Helen Maria Hawks, was the daughter of Presbyterian clergyman Roswell Hawks. Young Roswell Lamson probably acquired his love of books and learning from his mother and from his maternal grandfather, who helped found Mount Holyoke College. Two of his grand-uncles were, respectively, president of the College of New Jersey (Princeton) and Williams College.

In 8/9 CE Ovid was sent by the emperor Augustus to the town of Tomi in modern Romania, at the time at the far edge of the Roman Empire. 'Exile poetry' focuses on the Tristia (Sad Songs) and the Epistulae ex Ponto (Letters from the Black Sea), in total nine books of laments in which Ovid begs to be restored to Rome, or at least to be moved to a more congenial location. The main development between Tristia and ExPonto is Ovid's formal adoption in the later series of a letter format natural to poems sent over a long distance. The circumstances of this poetry, and particularly the identification of the addressee in the Ex Ponto, allows a degree of poignancy rare elsewhere is his poetry. Certainly, for all his claims to the contrary, Ovid’s poetic powers do not abandon him on the Black Sea, and what has made Ovid's exile poetry one of the most influential parts of his oeuvre is the rarity of a classical poet offering an intimately personal account of estrangement and alienation. In turn, these poems provided perhaps unexpected inspiration for modern writers exercised by themes of separation.

As a boy, I saw my dad cry on only three occasions. One was his father’s funeral. The other two involved dead orcas. In the 1970s, he worked as curator of Sealand of the Pacific, a small oceanarium near Victoria, British Columbia, and then for the Seattle Marine Aquarium and Sea World. On both sides of the US-Canadian border, across the Salish Sea, he helped capture killer whales for sale and display—or, as he darkly joked, “for fun and profit.” Tell someone today that your father caught orcas for a living and you might as well declare him a slave trader. Killer whales are arguably the most recognized and beloved wild species on the planet. They are certainly the most profitable display animals in history, and with the 2013 release of Blackfish, their fate became an international cause célèbre. Broadcast and distributed by CNN, the film became one of the most influential documentaries of all time. Already years into my research for this book when the movie came out, I found little in it surprising. But Blackfish turned my father, long conflicted about his past, sharply against orca captivity. He wasn’t alone. Almost overnight, viewers, politicians, and activists turned their sights on Sea World—a multibillion-dollar corporation famous for its killer whale shows. In this debate, it seemed there was no room for nuance or history. Millions around the world simply knew in their hearts that orcas had to be saved from captivity. What they didn’t realize was that, decades earlier, captivity may have saved the world’s orcas. Orcinus orca is the apex predator of the ocean, but that ocean has changed rapidly in recent decades. Following World War II, rising populations and new technology drove humans to plunder the sea as never before, and many regarded killer whales as dangerous pests. By the 1950s, whalers, scientists, and fishermen around the world were killing hundreds, perhaps thousands, per year. In a single expedition, celebrated by Time magazine, US soldiers slaughtered more than one hundred off Iceland. But then a curious thing happened.

This paper describes the creation of the Open Class 60 (BOC 60) racing yacht "Imagine". She was conceived to win the 1994 BOC singlehanded round the world race, an ambitious goal since the French sailors have dominated the race since its inception. This paper will examine the design of this complex racing machine, and the management of the project. The project produced a boat that was capable of attaining the goal of winning, but when the project management office failed to adhere to the project plan, the project unravelled and collapsed. In a squall at sea, at night, off Cape May, New Jersey, "Imagine's" boom failed, the main sail was dropped, and in the resultant short steep seas, "Imagine" slammed badly, dishing plating at both ends of the vessel, causing two forward frames to trip, and resulting in other structural damage to forward deck longitudinals and in the cockpit. "Imagine's" hull remained watertight, and she returned to Norfolk under short sail. Upon arrival she was inspected, and the necessary repair steps were outlined. These were discussed the following day with the project office and the ABS inspector. Within days drawings were provided to the project office for repair and to ABS for review. At that point matters stalled, no repair was started and within two week-; the project office announced their intent to abandon the project. The project plan will be reviewed, the basis for the design will be discussed, the incident at sea which precipitated the project's disbanding will be examined, and an analysis of the resultant damage given. Lessons learned from the project will be discussed. The actual design of the boat was interesting and rewarding, but it was a small part of the goal of the project. The goal was not attained, and when the BOC race started from Charleston in September 94, "Imagine" remained at the dock, her outfit and development incomplete. This paper will attempt to evaluate the reasons why. Two central themes repeat: lack of funds; and lack of sea trials. In our opinion it was this lack of funds, that led the project office to eliminate carefully planned steps in "Imagine's" development, specifically the sea trials. This also lead them to attempt an offshore voyage from Norfolk, Virginia to Newport, Rhode Island in November 1993, prior to sea trials, with a known defective boom, and a jury rigged boom vang.

However, we can suppose that all these elements come from an idea that acts as a trait d'union, an intuition that made the domestic space of the Mare Nostrum the place of the myth of living: the innovative idea of horizon summarized as the ability of the gaze to observe outward. Gio Ponti, Bernard Rudofsky and Luigi Cosenza are the architects of the materialization of this idea where the horizon is not only found in the relationship with the landscape but is present within the domestic space. In this space full of symbolism and origin, three houses are a body to be vivisected and rediscovered. Casa per Positano... and other shores, Hotel San Michele in Capri, Casa a Procida become autoptic and utopian spaces from which to steal the secret of the Mediterranean Sea.

This paper presents an advanced and accurate integrated system for the design and performance optimization of fiber reinforced sails -commonly named string sails- developed by SMAR Azure Ltd. This integrated design system allows sail designers not only to design sail-shapes and the reinforcing fiber paths, but also to validate the performance of the flying sail-shape and have accurate production details including the overall sail weight, material used, which means costs, and length of the fiber paths, which means production time. The SMAR Azure design and analysis method includes a validated and computationally efficient structural analysis method coupled with a modified vortex lattice method, with wake relaxation, to enable a proper aero-elastic simulation of sails in upwind conditions. The structural analysis method takes into account the geometric non-linearity and wrinkling behavior of membrane structures –such as sails-, the fiber layout, the influence of battens, trimming loads and interaction with rigging elements, e.g. luff sag calculation on a headstay, in a timely manner. This method has been extensively validated and used to optimize several racing and super-yachts sailing plans. Specifically, this paper presents a validated optimization of a real fiber reinforce membrane sail plan of 140’, 240 ton aluminium Super Yacht, carried out in collaboration with Paolo Semeraro (from Banks Sails Europe), who designs and produces the MEMBRANE™ and BFAST™ string sails, the latter with Marco Semeraro. Both BFAST and Bank Sails have been using the SMAR Azure technology for almost a decade and notwithstanding the long experience of Mr. Semeraro in using the technology, given the sailplan-size and detailed customer requirements, among which improved durability, strength and reliability and smooth use of in-boom furling, this project was carried out incooperation with the SMAR Azure technical team. A total of 1000 sqm of upwind sailing area was analyzed and optimized. A combination of Dyneema TM Sk 90 and black Twaron 2200 was chosen for the fibers and a triple step lamination under hi-pressure plus laminated patches utilizing the same fibers where added to prevent local deformation of the corners. A long term vacuumed post-curing period sealed the production phases. The final sail plan is -as anticipated by the analysis results- holds the desired shape and is stronger. The final fiber layout shows a reduction in maximum stress by 22% compared to the initial design; this was achieved with only 11% (4kg) gain in fiber weight.

Wastewater systems are one of the most important infrastructure elements in terms of human and environmental health. In such systems, failures are observed depending on various factors. These failures increase operating and maintenance-repair costs and create threats to human and environmental health. For this reason, these systems should be monitored regularly and the factors causing malfunction should be analyzed. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate and analyze failures occurring in sewerage systems with geographical information systems. For this, the failures in the sewage system of Malatya province between year 2015-2019 were taken into account. It has been determined that the most common types of failure are misuse, in-line sag and deformation, and in-line lubrication. In addition, the highest failure rate occurred in pipes with a diameter of 100-200 mm. In the spatial analysis of faults, inline collapse is generally observed in the central regions, while misuse faults are found to be in the system. It has been observed that factors such as pipe diameter and length, season, traffic load, ground feature, and improper use are effective in the increase in fault density.

This article presents the results of studying the plant introduction and the possibility of cultivation of Persian shallot – Allium stipitatum Regel. This plant is popularly used in pickled and salt form for the preparation of various salads, because of which it is classified as an endangered species and is listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Tajikistan. Studies on the seed productivity of domesticated Persian shallot were carried out in 2017- 2019 on the territory of experimental plots of the National Republican Center of the Genetic Resources of the Tajik Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Gissar Valley), which is located in the northern part of Rudaki district at an altitude of 730 m above sea level. It was established that the average number of fruits is 250 ± 15.7 pcs; the number of fruit set is 210 pcs; the total number of seeds is 809 pcs per fruit. When compared with the natural growing conditions (Gajne area), it turned out that the seed productivity of Persian shallot under natural conditions is averagely 16.7% - 24.5% higher than in the Rudaki district (Gissar Valley). As a result of the studies, it was found that it is necessary to choose areas with natural protection from sunlight (protective forest belts or stool beds) to create more favorable conditions in the first years of adaptation of Persian shallot in the Rudaki district.
