Streszczenie:
The book of Revelation includes more references to the Hebrew Scriptures than any other NT book. Even the sheer volume of scriptural references in the book of Revelation seems to suggest that the study of scriptural references is fundamental to understanding the book, as scholars have recognised for some time. Unlike the prophetic books, scholars have not given significant attention to the Psalms, although they do recognise the presence of many allusions to the Psalms. Through in-depth examination of the use of Psalms in Revelation this thesis demonstrates how significantly the Psalms influenced on the composition of the book of Revelation and offers a fresh insight of the structure and theology of the book. Part I (chapters 2–3) offers the background of this study. Chapter 2 discusses the use of Psalms in Second Temple Judaism, focusing on how the book of Psalms was employed in the Dead Sea Scrolls and the characteristics of the Greek translation of the Hebrew Psalms. Chapter 3 considers the significance of the Psalms for the early Christian communities. The Syriac version of the Psalms and the use of Psalms in the NT provide significant data/evidence for its use in early Christianity. Part II (chapters 4–7) examines all detectable cases of Psalms in Revelation. The cases are divided into four categories: strong allusion (chapter 4), probable allusion (chapter 5), possible allusion (chapter 6) and influence (chapter 7). In total, thirty-seven cases are considered: eight for strong allusion, seven for probable, nine for possible, and twelve for influence. As a conclusion of the study, Part III (chapter 8) presents the significance of the Psalms in the book of Revelation. The chapter sheds light on liturgical use of Psalms in the book of Revelation and in relevance with the Psalms some theological themes important for understanding the book will be set forth.

Wood, Shane Joseph. "Alter-Imperial paradigm : Empire studies and the Book of Revelation". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10615.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The question “How does Revelation interact with the Roman Empire?” weaves its way through the past 125 years of scholarly research on the Apocalypse. Yet, flawed methodologies, false assumptions, and limited trajectories have led to poor conclusions that posture Revelation as nothing more than a vitriolic attack on the Roman Empire that intends to incite, reveal, and/or remind Christians of imperial evil. This thesis challenges this academic narrative of the Apocalypse through the development and implementation of the Alter-Imperial paradigm. Repositioning the theoretical background of the imperial inquiry around Empire Studies, the Alter-Imperial paradigm applies insights from Postcolonial criticism and “examinations of dominance” to engage the complexities of the relationship between the sovereign(s) and subject(s) of a society—a dynamic far more intricate than either rebellion or acquiescence. From this disposition, various forms of Roman propaganda (from Augustus to Domitian) are explored to surface the Sovereign Narrative saturating the public transcript and immersing the subjects in key messages of absolute dominance, divine favor, and imperial benevolence. The date of Revelation’s composition, then, is established to isolate the socio-historical analysis to the Flavian dynasty, paying particular attention to the viewpoint of the oppressed and the question of “persecution.” The Flavian dynasty’s essential development of an anti-Jewish environment (intensified in Domitian’s reign) offers not only a contentious context for Christian communities—still viewed as indistinguishable from Jewish communities by Roman elite—but also indelible images of imperial propaganda through which subject texts, like Revelation, can interact with the empire. From this vantage point, the Alter-Imperial paradigm offers fresh interpretative possibilities for familiar (and even forgotten) texts, such as Revelation 20:7-10. This enigmatic passage depicts the release of Satan from a 1,000 year imprisonment at a climactic moment in the Apocalypse, and yet, this text is widely neglected in Revelation scholarship. Parallels to Roman triumphal processions (a central element in Flavian propaganda), however, demonstrate that Revelation 20:7- 10 depicts Satan as the bound enemy leader marching in God’s triumphal procession. Nevertheless, the Alter-Imperial paradigm does not stagnate at intriguing textual parallels. Indeed, this interpretation of Revelation 20:7-10 postures the interpreter to poignantly address the question: “How does Revelation interact [not merely subvert] the empire?” Specifically, the use of Roman imagery in the subject text does not necessitate an “anti-imperial” intent, but may simply be the grammar with which the subject text constructs their Alter-Empire. In fact, the Alter-Imperial paradigm suggests that to reduce Revelation to an anti-Roman document intent on the empire’s destruction is to over-exaggerate Rome’s significance in the subject text and, then, to miss its true target—the construction of the Alter-Empire through the destruction of the true enemy, Satan.

Streszczenie:
This thesis aims to provide a strong case for the dating of the Book of Revelation to the year 39 CE, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Gaius Caesar, otherwise known as Caligula. This places it far earlier than either the Irenaeus-attested 95 CE, or the Preterist pre-destruction of Jerusalem of 69 CE. This thesis will show how the two cryptic clues in Rev. 13:18 and Rev.17:9-11 concerning the Beast can both be applied to Caligula, if the recently discovered Oxyrhynchus papyrus that reads the number of the Beast as 616 is used instead of the more popular, but arguably later, 666 and if the name Gaius Caesar is acknowledged to refer to both Caligula and one of his predecessors, Julius Caesar. Historical-critical methods will be applied to identifying the False Prophet of Revelation and three of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as historical personages figuring in the events leading up to the proposed composition date. By suggesting that the author of the book, John, used the fraudulent literary technique of vaticinium ex eventu, prophecy after the event, it will be shown that these real people operated in three of the four quarters of the ancient world, each in his own area and in the corresponding season of the year, in correct sequence. The Fourth Horseman will be shown to be a genuine attempt at prophecy that failed. A seldom-considered crucifixion date will be used to fit the time periods of this thesis perfectly into the long-term Daniel Seventy Weeks prophecy. Astronomical placement of planets in constellations will show how the cosmic statements in the Book of Revelation can also be used to pinpoint dates leading up to John's end-time. This thesis presents a case for dating the Book of Revelation as the earliest of the New Testament canon.

Streszczenie:
This study emerged from a study of the Book of Revelation originally undertaken in the Bible study programme of a local Baptist Church congregation in Kingston, Jamaica. Soon, dissatisfaction was felt by the writer, who had conducted the study, concerning the methodological procedure adopted and the practical relevance achieved. Insights gained from the Theology of Liberation, its own methodological procedure in general and hermeneutical approach in particular, showed up the inadequacies of the approach that had been adopted and also suggested possibilities which have become the basis of this present study. There resulted a heightened appreciation of the book including fresh awareness of its significance for the contemporary world, particularly the so-called Third World. There seems to be a certain structural correlation and correspondence of experience between the context and people of the book's focus and the context and peoples of Today's Third World. The context was one of oppression and the. experience one of struggle and endurance. The Book represents reflection on engagement in solidarity and struggle against oppression, on the part of its writer and his fellow-believers. The reflection took place in the light of the Word of God, the book being greatly influenced by the Old Testament in particular, without it being quoted and by the inspiration of the Spirit. Self-Conscious Contextual orientation, practical commitment, prophetic consciousness, political sensitivity, ecclesial framework of action and witness and liberative hope soteriologically grounded and eschatologically focussed are significant features of the reflection. These features which are themselves anticipatory of certain insights of the theology of liberation give the Book very powerful meaning and effective relevance particularly for the Third World experience. The book's significance is, however, not exhausted by the particular contextual relevance emphasised. It combines remarkably the contextual and cosmic, thus indicating quite instructively that the contextual and universal are not necessarily mutually exclusive realms for theological reflection that is self consciously contextual.

This is a small contribution to the current debate regarding the genre of the Book of Revelation. The study is motivated by the observation that John employs prolific sources both uniquely and generically. The results of prior source-critical studies are employed to delineate the scope and nature of John's sources. The specific source-critical contribution of this study is a detailed analysis of the manner in which John employs his sources with generic intent. However, the analysis is conducted in strict compliance with the dictates of the principles of generic criticism. For convenience, these principles and those of source criticism are not discussed until just prior to the generic analysis of Rev itself. But the initial chapters assume the principles to lay the necessary groundwork. A study of authorship and unity indicates that Rev is a unified whole, the work of a single author. Source criticism may therefore be confined alone to John's prolific allusions and punctiliar quotations. Generic definitions are deduced for classical OT prophecy and classical apocalyptic in turn. However, available data is far too sparse to permit similar results for NT prophecy or neo-apocalyptic. Accordingly, only the first two have any possible generic claim upon Rev. In strict generic terms Rev fails to qualify as classical apocalyptic, as indicated as well by source criticism. Generically, Rev also fails to qualify as classical prophecy. However, generic and source criticism concur that John makes strenuous efforts to match this paradigm, and falls only marginally short. He is certainly a neo-classical prophet, albeit with no generic companions. He dips his hands in several diverse families of sources. But he bathes himself in classical OT prophecy alone.

This thesis provides an examination of John’s depiction of Jesus in Revelation. Past studies of John’s presentation of Jesus in Revelation have tended to focus upon either the synthesis of the various themes and phrases or upon a particular image used throughout the book. Past studies have likewise generally focused upon either the Old Testament or Roman emperor worship as the major source for the imagery used by John. Within this thesis, I argue that John interacts with imagery from his cultural context (Roman emperor worship), from the key writings of his apparent religious heritage (the Old Testament), and from convictions shared with the wider early Christian community. In the sections devoted to each of these three sources (Roman emperor worship, the Old Testament writings, and early Christianity), I provide an assessment of the way that John utilizes images, phrases, and motifs from each in his depiction of Jesus. The interaction with this material represents, I argue, not a haphazard conglomeration of material from divergent sources, but rather a complex, well-developed set of religious convictions concerning Jesus, creatively expressed in this early Christian writing.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research aims to trace the exodus motif in the book of Revelation in general and Rev. 12-20 in particular, and to examine the socio-rhetorical function of the use of the exodus motif. Our hypothesis is that Rev. 12-20 constitutes a coherent unit in terms of narratology and that the exodus motif plays a significant role in forming the structure and the message of the book of Revelation, specifically of Revelation 12-20. Significantly, the song of Moses and the Lamb in Rev. 15 plays a pivotal role in the development of the thread of the chapter 12-20 as a plot. In the chapter 2, an overview of the history of interpretation of Revelation is provided and also the limitation of current studies of the song of Moses is highlighted. In addition, a new approach to the song of Moses in Revelation is suggested. The main goal of the chapter 3 is to examine Rev. 12-20 according to four narrative elements and from which Rev 12-20 can be deduced as a discrete literary unit constituting a plot. It will be argued that Rev. 12-20, as a plot, is highly stylized in the chiastic structure which has the song of Moses and the Lamb at the centre. Chapter 4 investigates Exod. 1-15 as a coherent story and explains how the author of Revelation adopts the exodus motifs in forming both the theme and the structure of Revelation. Moreover, it will be argued that the exodus motif generated certain sociorhetorical meanings to the audiences or the readers who were assimilated into the Roman Empire. For understanding the socio-rhetorical meanings, we examine the socio-rhetorical context, namely Asia Minor as part of the Roman Empire, and deal with the socio-rhetorical role of the exodus motif in the book of Revelation. In the chapter 5, firstly, drawing on the theoretical assumptions from social psychology, we build up a framework in which we can deal with Rev. 12-20 in terms of identity issues. Then, the covenantal identity based on the covenant in the book of Exodus will be suggested as an alternative identity. Thus, the exodus motif in Rev. 12-20 challenges the assimilated identity of the audiences or the readers to be renewed in the covenantal identity, so that they may be holy apart from the culture and the structure of the Roman Empire. The song of Moses and the Lamb reinforces the covenantal identity.

This thesis demonstrates that there are materials in the Book of Revelation which reflect and build upon the Eucharist of the Seven Churches to whom the Apocalypse was sent. This material is shown to have been influential on the later development of the eucharistic worship. The argument develops in five stages: 1. The worship materials in Revelation have a number of features in common which relate well to elements in the cultural and religious milieux of the Seven Churches. Some of these features are used in a distinctive manner (Chapter 2). 2. The worship materials are extensive and integral to the structure of the Book of Revelation. They give an overall structure to the text which is very like that of the eucharistic liturgies of some of the early churches (Chapter 3). 3. The worship materials are essentially eucharistic. They presume a eucharistic context of hearing and contain elements from the Eucharist of the Seer's churches. The reading of the text of Revelation is impoverished if this context is neglected (Chapter 4). 4. The structure, content and theology of the Eucharist of the Seven Churches can be exposed, at least in part, by a careful study of the worship materials of the Book of Revelation (Chapter 5). 5. The Liturgy of the Seven Churches, as attested by the Apocalypse, is a precursor for the Antlochene (West Syrian) family of liturgies. This fills a gap in the present understanding of the derivation of this group of liturgies (Chapter 6).

I argue that some ancient Jewish sects, specifically the community at Qumran and the early Christians, did in fact write against, speak out against, and interpret ancient tests as being against their fellow Jews, the Temple, Jerusalem or all three. Given the time in which these occurred, I argue that those sects believed that the Roman Empire would be means in which their god would punish/destroy Jews that did not believe as they did, the Temple that did not represent what they thought it should, and Jerusalem as they believed it had become a sinful city. I examine the writings and persons of the Greek Bible. I examine specifics such as the Parable of the Tenants and demonstrate that this was delivered against Jewish leadership and the Olivet Discourse that, like the book of Jubilees, presents a series of tribulations that will fall on a wicked generation, specifically the one living in Jerusalem during the first century C.E. I also demonstrate how the motif of these writings affected the book of Revelation. I examine the prophetic books of the Hebrew Bible and show how the author used them as allusions in regards to the Whore of Babylon that appear in the book of Revelation. In doing so, I demonstrate that the Whore of Babylon is correctly identified as the city of Jerusalem. Additionally I show that the author used Babylon, the ancient foe of Israel, as a metaphor to demonstrate what he believed Israel had become. Lastly, I examine the author, a man named John, and the social world he lived in and the time he wrote during. I demonstrate that the commonly held belief of persecution against the early Christians and the use of Roman religion, such as the imperial cult, has been over stated and has led not only to a misinterpretation of chapters 17 and 18 in the book of Revelation, but they have led to an overall misunderstanding of the book as a whole.

Streszczenie:
This thesis explores the meaning of the New Jerusalem in Rev. 21-22. It is divided into four major parts. The first one is the OT background study from Ezekiel, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zechariah. This section observes the prophetical messages of restoration, centering around the Temple/Jerusalem motif, which is one of the main concerns of the early Jewish writers and Revelation. The second one is the study of early Jewish tradition. This pmi investigates how the New Jerusalem theme develops during the second Temple period and post-70. This observation shows that some (not all) of the early Jewish tradition understands the rebuilding of the New Temple as the transference of the Heavenly Temple. For this reason, the Heavenly Temple/Jerusalem is emphasized. The third pmi is the NT background study. Here two facts demonstrated: Christ as the New Temple and the church as the New Temple. This conclusion provides a suitable foundation for developing our argument in Revelation. Finally, the fourthpart is the study of the New Jerusalem in Revelation, particularly Rev. 21-22. John uses much of the Jewish tradition in his writing. His main argument is that the church (which is symbolized by several images) is placed in heaven now (chs. 4-20) and the church (which is symbolized by the New Jerusalem) will descend to the earth from heaven (21 :2) in the future. This assumption is closely related to the early Jewish idea. However, he does not follow the current Jewish idea without any modification but he differentiates his understanding from it by christologically interpreting the OT messages. This is well shown in his following announcement: "I saw no Temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb" (21 :22).

This dissertation explores the function of ekklēsia rhetoric in the Book of Revelation, and demonstrates its role in addressing various issues within the seven ekklēsiai and their inscribed rhetorical situation, including: the participation of eidōlothyta, the blasphemy of the so-called synagogue of Satan, and the pursuit of wealth. Contemporary reconstructions of the rhetorical situation of Revelation cast the assemblies as consolidated Christian churches and view the aforementioned issues as indicative of tensions between heretics and orthodox Christians, between church and synagogue, and/or between church and Greco-Roman society. Yet, such interpretations often reinscribe normative frameworks, the so-called parting of the ways, and obfuscate the role of imperial power. In contrast, I reconstruct the inscribed assemblies Revelation as Jewish groups from the Diaspora in Asia Minor that used ekklēsia rhetoric as well as its topoi of civic reciprocity, civic participation, and the common good to negotiate the socio-economic and political situation of Asia Minor under Rome. In order to map the ways in which the assemblies could have interacted with imperial power, I use epigraphic materials from ancient voluntary associations. Drawing from postcolonial theory, I also read the rhetorical situation of Revelation as a colonial situation and the aforementioned issues as negotiations of power, ethnic identity, and wealth.

Streszczenie:
The book of Revelation is perhaps the least understood and most controversial text of the Christian Scriptures. Among the mainstream churches, Revelation has been put into the 'too-hard basket.' Among the more fundamentalist churches, it has been used to construct lurid timetables of the 'end-of-the-world.' The reading of Revelation through modern eyes has tended to sever the text's connections to its original first century audience. In particular, the modern understanding of heaven and earth, the modern conceptualization of time, and the modern demarcation between politics and religion produce interpretations of apocalyptic that are alien to the ideology and worldview of its original author and audience. In this thesis I interpret the book of Revelation as looking not to the end of world history, but as an unmasking of the world dominated by the Roman Empire. In other words, Revelation exposes the claims of empire as illusory, and envisions an alternative reality that claims to be revealed and authorized by God. While this understanding runs counter to the modern 'apocalyptic paradigm,' I believe it is in keeping with the 'total conception of reality' in antiquity.

Our mandate in this thesis is in essence to tackle and complete two inter-linked, tripartite tasks. Firstly, the sources and traditions of the inaugural throne-vision of the Apocalypse (Rev. 4-5) will be considered; its contents and omissions will be closely examined; and its progressive context will be traced throughout the book with special attention being given to its relationship with the final eschatological vision (Rev. 21-22). Secondly, in parallel and in conjunction with these first three objectives, there is a further threefold consideration which stems from this primary analysis. This secondary concern will deal with the doctrine of God, the Christology of the Lamb, and the eschatological hope of the Christian. These tasks will serve to firmly anchor Revelation in its Jewish traditional background, and John's methods employed in handling these sources will be described. The comparison of the inaugural and the final throne-room visions will be made, and also their resemblance with and difference from other throne-room scenes will be highlighted. Finally John's theological messages, that develop from this, will be detailed.

'And I saw the city, the holy one, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride, made beautiful for her husband. And I heard a great voice from the throne saying: "See, the home of God is among human beings, he will live with them and they will be his people and he himself, God, will be with them and be their God'. (Rev 21:2-3). Throughout history, the vision of a new city, the heavenly Jerusalem coming down from heaven has inspired human beings to dream about community, society, the world. It has been an incentive to turn unsatisfied longing into utopian idea and ultimately action. The fact that the language of the Apocalypse can inspire human imagination in a highly effective manner certainly contributed to the book's controversial role in the history of New Testament interpretation. The bizarre, often- paradoxical language seems to veil rather than reveal its message. Interestingly, the book never ceased to be an inspiration for artists. It is the thesis of this study that the text embedded world of the Apocalypse can impel the reader or audience into a new understanding of world and cosmos in a manner similar to visual arts. In contrast to conceptual language, art does not confine interpretation but opens space for imagination. Using artistic expression as paradigm therefore offers considerable insights regarding the striking language in the Apocalypse. In this context, a central image, the city as it appears most prevalent in Rev 1:19-3:22; 17:1-18:24 and 21:1- 22:5 is analysed as metaphorical material, which carries the power to incite the reader/audience to create mental images. To imagine provides a vital step in a dynamic interpretive process of understanding in which significant aspects of the metaphor of the city become textual visuality.

With the rise of extremist fundamentalist groups, such as ISIS, it is important to note similar happenings in other traditions. This thesis traces the interpretive tradition of the Book of Revelation, from its composition in 90 C.E. through the dispensationalist usage of it by John Nelson Darby in the 19th century, and how its modern use by American Christian fundamentalist groups leads to rhetorical violence, including feelings of marginalization and societal targeting, and creation of insider/outsider dynamics with those outside the tradition. While rhetorical violence—language and behaviors that harm others and that occur so regularly that they often become routinized and habitual—does not directly involve killing and enacting of physical violence, it can lead to it. This thesis concludes that the instances of rhetorical violence occurring in mainstream American Christian fundamentalism, such as in Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins’ Left Behind series and the author’s ethnographic case study of a church in Bowling Green, Kentucky, are problematic because of the possibility for physical violence.

Streszczenie:
Using the inductive method of procedure, the dissertation will attempt to ascertain one thing: what is the nature of the Christian life in the Apocalypse? The following points will be argued: 1. A variety of literary techniques are used in exhorting Christians to the degree that the hortatory elements permeate the book. 2. Both the corporate nature of the people of God and individuals personally are emphasized. 3. The designations used to describe Christians provide insight into the self-consciousness of the people of God and how they are to express their status in daily living. They are the people of God constituted on the basis of the deed of Christ. The priestly service they render is unwavering faithfulness, the permanence of which grants them the seal of God's care and inclusion in the number of the saints. 4. With regard to vocation, performance of works and the practice of endurance dominate. The theme of faithfulness to the conquering Lamb runs, without exception, through their activities, for it is their activity which forms the necessary link between God and the world. 5. The attitudes and activities associated with the worship by Christians center about the figure of the Lamb. 6. Two conceptions, time and teleology, reveal that the ultimate destiny of creation is fulfilled in the Apocalypse by the faithful response of the believers to the call of God in Christ. The tension between the past and the future, the heavenly world and the world below, is finally resolved in the present task of the believers to be faithful witnesses. Through the power of language the Seer impressed upon his audience an awareness of the Christian life. It was a context in which Christians were called upon to choose between holy living or unholy living. There are no nuances in the Apocalypse.

Streszczenie:
The text of the book of Revelation preserves examples of scriptural reuse that cohere with similar patterns of borrowing in other ancient Jewish works. This thesis describes the processes of reuse employed by Revelation's notional author (John), and places them into conversation with modes of reuse employed in other ancient Jewish texts, using Zechariah 1-8 as a test case. The design of the study has been crafted to explore these examples in a manner consistent with ancient textual composition. In the first chapter, I examine a dominant aspect of Jewish and early Christian textual culture: pluriformity. I argue that a pluriform scriptural tradition (in both Hebrew and Greek) was a controlling force that shaped the processes of scriptural reuse and, in turn, composition in this period. This analysis also delimits the possible forms of Zechariah available to ancient readers. With textual pluriformity in mind, the next chapter examines the text of Zech 1-8 preserved in John's scriptural references (Rev 5.6; 6.1-8, 9-11; 7.1; 11.4; 19.11-16). While this analysis is complicated by the author's presentation of reused material in Revelation, the evidence strongly suggests that John was familiar with a Hebrew form of Zechariah. Once John's preferred form of Zechariah is identified, the third chapter describes his techniques of reuse. This portion of the thesis consists of a catalogue and discussion of the differences in graphic representation between segments of Zech 1-8 and their instantiation in Revelation. This examination builds a set of textual data that accesses John's processes and strategies of reading. The fourth section of the thesis explores John's habits of reading as witnessed in his techniques of reuse. This section identifies features of Zech 1-8 that motivated John to engage with and alter the wording of antecedent material. Not every textual difference can be accounted for in this way, but it is evident that John is cognisant of the features of a particular form of Zech 1-8. Many of the differences between source and reuse can be explained as John's attempt to comprehend ambiguities in Zechariah. The final section of the thesis is a comparative analysis. The results of the preceding examinations of Revelation are compared to instances of the reuse of Zechariah in early Jewish literature, including works in the Hebrew Bible, the ancient versions of Zechariah, Dead Sea Scrolls, and works commonly classified as “deutero-canonical.” This analysis grounds previous observations about John's reuse in their native textual culture and acts as an historical control. The evidence suggests that John's modes of reading, reformulation, and reuse are similar to those found in other early Jewish works. The thesis concludes that scriptural reuse in the book of Revelation cannot be understood apart from the realities of textual pluriformity and the practices of scriptural reuse in Jewish antiquity. This approach suggests that John is a “scribal” expert—a careful reader of his scriptural tradition—and that his modes of reuse are conditioned by the textual culture of this period.

"God's Spies": Reading, Revelation, and the Poetics of Surveillance in Early Modern England The recent material turn in humanities scholarship has yielded fascinating and insightful research in roughly the past decade, especially in the fields of book history and the history of reading. Scholars of material culture have researched the concrete particulars of book production, the places books were sold, and the conditions in which they were read. This dissertation focuses on the clandestine aspects of early modern English material culture, with particular emphasis on the secret spaces in which reading occurred. Early modern English monarchs cultivated a culture of surveillance in an effort to eliminate illicit religious texts, which combined with changes to the conditions in which texts were read to encourage more private and secretive reading habits. Ultimately, technological, religious, and political change became epistemological as readers increasingly applied a hermeneutics of surveillance to the texts they approached, reading for hidden meaning and for total interpretive control of a text. Writers of imaginative fiction staged scenes of what I call textual surveillance in their works, transforming the hermeneutics of surveillance into a poetics of surveillance that scrutinized the validity of this interpretive strategy and explored how these material, religious, and political changes warped the way readers interpreted, thought, and perceived reality.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is a dialogue between Jurgen Moltmann and the Book of Revelation on the theme of the kingdom of God. In addition to charting out the dialogue. Chapter 1 sets the stage for it through a theoretical reflection on its viability, and places the broad strokes of Moltmann's understanding of the kingdom within his theological project as a whole. Chapter 2 looks at how Moltmann sees the kingdom as the symbol of hope for humanity, and chapter 3 at how he understands the paradoxical and hidden presence of God's coming reign in history. The latter halves of these chapters contain appraisals of the strengths and weaknesses of Moltmann's portrait of the kingdom. The analysis of Revelation will commence with a short chapter (chapter 4) that both looks at the broad strokes of Revelation's kingdom language and shows how Moltmann and Revelation develop their respective understandings of the kingdom in response to similar crises. The analysis of this theme in Revelation will follow a similar movement as seen in chapters 2 and 3: chapter 5 considers how Revelation depicts the future as a regime change, as the time when God will assume the position of geopolitical authority over the earth; and chapter 6 looks at how the book uses kingdom language in its depiction of God (who he is and how he accomplishes his purposes) and in its portrayal of the church. In the latter half of these chapters, the analysis of Moltmann is brought into conversation with Revelation, considering how Moltmann may guide a contemporary reading of the book, and how Revelation suggests ways problematic areas of Moltmann's view may be solved. The concluding chapter will look at what the thesis has sought to accomplish and what further questions it raises.

The central object of this Doctoral thesis lies in the issue of the Christian prophetic activities in the book of Revelation. It aims to propose a probable description of the Christian prophet as well as the characteristics of his socialecclesiastic place as such, by means of the literary analysis of Rev 10, 1-11. There seems to be, up to a certain historical moment, within the primitive Christian ecclesiasticism an individual or group figure named profh, thj, who had a silhouette, a function and an authority of his own, diverse from the classic Old Testament prophet. This latter known in the New Testament for the figure of John the Baptist. Two premises stand inter-related: the hypothesis of a proper socio-literary approach, that does not mean a mere use of the empirical results of sociology of religion to the New Testament; and, alongside it, the reasonable hypothesis of the access to the contextual reality by the members of the community so called prophets in the texts of the Revelation. Our thesis not only approaches the biblical-exegetic relevance of the issue, but also includes its present discussion. Why do we talk or matter about these prophets that are summed up to the ancient Christian texts like so many other forms? Which contemporary phenomena, ecclesiastic or not, demand a re- evaluation of such issue?
