Abstract This account of late medieval medicine is unusual in being the first non-fiction book by the author of several historical novels set in the period, most recently of “a historical romance of Vlad the Impaler” (2020). Juliana Cummings has a long-standing fascination with her family’s history back to the time of Henry VII of England (1457–1509), when male ancestors fought in the king’s army, and with the medical perils people faced even in times of relative peace and prosperity. Responding to her treatment of medicine and mortality in novels and short stories, an editor from Pen & Sword History reached out to Cummings and suggested she write this book. The aim is to instruct those who know little about medicine before the present day and to do so in a read­able fashion, with reliable background information about the development of medical knowledge since Greco-Roman times. Obviously, this is not a book for specialists, but a good gift for friends and relatives, especially younger ones who wonder what things were like in earlier times and how people managed to live through them. Hence the book’s subtitle, “Surviving the Times.”

Political Writings, Margaret Cavendish (Susan James, ed.), New York: Cambridge University Press, 2003, pp. xxxix, 298.The publication of Margaret Cavendish's Political Writings is part of a recent effort to make Cavendish's seventeenth-century works more accessible to students and scholars alike. Political Writings is a particularly significant addition to this effort in that it contains two of Cavendish's most explicitly political texts, A Description of a New World called the Blazing World (1666), Cavendish's best-known endeavour in utopian fiction, along with the first modern edition of Orations of Divers Sorts (1662). Combined with a concise introduction by the volume's editor, philosopher Susan James, who expertly navigates Cavendish's many influences and references—ancient and modern—the book effectively puts Cavendish on the map as a political thinker. Although the most published Englishwoman of her period, and now the subject of a veritable growth industry in the fields of early modern literary and gender history, Margaret Cavendish has received virtually no attention in the field of political thought. With her inclusion in the Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought series, there is hope that Cavendish will now be treated and analyzed, not just as the prolific writer of drama, poetry and natural philosophy that she was, but as an incisive thinker who engaged with, and published on, the most vital political questions facing Civil War and Restoration England.

The current volume brings together contributions from two separate editors. The first is a collection of texts edited by Peter Clarke that evidence Cardinal Thomas Wolsey's legatine powers to grant dispensations and other papal graces and his exercise of these powers during the 1520s in Henry VIII's realm. The second is a text edited by Michael Questier. It takes the form of glosses on and suggested readings of the Elizabethan statute law which imposed treason penalties on Catholic clergy who exercised their office in reconciling to Rome (i.e. absolving from schism and heresy) and on those who availed themselves of this sacramental power. The rationale for linking these contributions in a single volume is threefold. First, both generally concern Catholicism in Tudor England, especially the authority of Catholic clergy there both before and after the break with Rome. Secondly and more specifically, they regard the role of these clergy as agents of papal authority in Tudor England. Wolsey was appointed as a papal legate in 1518 and obtained legatine powers from successive popes on a scale unparalleled in pre-Reformation England, notably to grant dispensations, and he exercised these dispensing powers there extensively; he was thus the papal agent par excellence in Tudor England on the eve of the Reformation. The Elizabethan ‘tolerationist’ text, by contrast, seeks to deny that Catholic clergy necessarily functioned as agents of papal authority. They were not, therefore, all without exception traitors to the queen, even though one literal reading of the statute book might give the impression that this was what the State had meant. Instead, so this manuscript claimed, the statutes themselves could be read in such a way as to imply that the legislators themselves accepted that the Catholic clergy's priestly functions did not depend exclusively on papal supremacy (unlike Wolsey's legatine status) or even a malign anti-popish understanding of the papacy as a legal and ecclesiastical entity. Therefore the exercise of their faculties could not automatically be interpreted as treasonable. Coincidentally Wolsey's activity as a papal agent led to him being attainted him with treason, and although the charge did not relate to his dispensing powers, four years after Wolsey's fall Henry VIII forbade his subjects to petition Rome or its agents for the kinds of graces Wolsey had issued. He established the Faculty Office to issue such graces instead, and its authority depended on royal, not papal, supremacy. Both contributions, therefore, concern the relationship between Catholic clergy and supreme authority in the English Church, wherever this was deemed to lie. Thirdly, both contributions illuminate the limits of the law and flexibility in interpreting and applying it. Wolsey's graces in effect limited the operation of canon law: his dispensations suspended it in specific instances, notably regarding marriage and ordination; and he also granted licences permitting activity that it normally forbade, such as clergy not residing in their benefices. The ‘tolerationist’ text implies, although with arguments which at times seem rather specious, that the Elizabethan State was, even in its more draconian utterances, to some extent drawing in its horns. Both contributions, therefore, concern apparently binding law which might be relaxed in Tudor England with regard to Catholic clergy (as well as laity in the case of Wolsey's papal graces).

African Fiction on the Swedish Market 1961–1981: Bo Cavefors Publishing Ltd. and the ”Afrika berättar” (”Africa Speaks”) Series This article examines the selection, marketing and reception of contemporary African fiction on the Swedish book market of the 1960s and 70s, through the case of a book series called ”Afrika berättar”, launched by Bo Cavefors Publishing, Ltd. Bo Cavefors was the Swedish publisher of writers such as Wole Soyinka, Ngu˜gı˜ wa Thiong’o and José Luandino Vieira. The article discusses the way in which these literary works were received from the perspective of current African politics. In addition, it considers the essential role of the publisher’s networks, such as freelance editors and translators in launching the series.

The review discusses a volume of scholarly articles edited by Samantha Rayner and Kim Wilkins that sets out to present a comprehensive body of research into the oeuvre of the English novelist Georgette Heyer. The book comprises several sections: gender, genre, sources, and circulation and reception. Heyer is the renowned founder of Regency romance, whose work is noted for exceptional attention to historical facts and reconstruction of the aristocratic slang of the period. Her novels, however, remained largely ignored by scholars. The volume’s editors succeed in producing an invaluable compilation enriching the studies of 1920s English genre literature by considering Heyer’s work in the context of post-war culture, with its heightened interest in the Napoleonic era, as well as in relation to literary tradition, especially Jane Austen’s works, but also referencing adventure novels of Heyer’s older contemporaries Baroness Orczy and Rafael Sabatini.

The article deals with the author’s strategies, used by E. O’Donnell in his Twenty Years’ Experience as a Ghost Hunter, and compares this peculiar text with ghost stories – a genre of fiction very popular those days. O’Donnell’s book is a part of a long tradition of occult ‘non-fiction’, but it is positioned as the author’s memoirs, a true story of his own life (his other books are basically collections of ‘real’ ghostly appearances in various regions of England), and begins with his (or his alter ego’s) youth and his first traumatic encounter with a ghost that influenced his career choice, but then this traditional life story turns into a set of cases, not necessarily witnessed by the narrator himself. Some stories are structured exactly like fictional ghost stories but their perception is preconditioned by the ‘rules of reading’ established by the author (the book is supposed to be his memoirs) and by the character of information – what the narrator knows about ghosts from various sources. Thus, the text is very uneven – its aesthetic characteristics are regarded as secondary in comparison with the ‘facts’ retold.

This thesis examines the processes of writerly and editorial literary production undertaken by women sensation authors in the 1860s and 1870s. This focus represents a shift from the prevailing critical emphasis on the consumption of sensation fiction to the realm of production and therein allows the thesis to analyse the ways in which sensation operates as a set of rhetorical and linguistic strategies for women writers in the changing publishing conditions of mid-to-late Victorian society. I consider the ways in which sensation is an idiom that permeates all aspects of magazine publishing in this period and demonstrate how it could be adapted and become an empowering discourse for women writers and editors. Furthermore, this thesis sees sensation as an important component in the transformation of the press in the 1860s and 1870s. By analysing the specific ways in which sensational strategies were appropriated and transformed, this thesis reassesses the role of sensation in the creation of women’s writing in the second half of the nineteenth century, and consider its legacies in later ‘New Woman’ writers. I achieve this by examining three women editors, who were part of the transformation of magazine publishing in the period. Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915), Ellen (Mrs. Henry) Wood (1814-1887), and Florence Marryat (1837-1899) all operated as writers and editors in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. They produced varying types of sensational fiction that they serialised in their own monthly magazines, Belgravia, Argosy, and London Society respectively. Sensation provided a dynamic and flexible means for these women author-editors to assert their status in the context of the expansion of the press in the 1860s and 1870s. I argue that their work invites a more fluid and generous critical definition of sensation.

In the early 1920s, the literary editor Sidney Clark wrote about English classic texts as moral guides for new readers. In 1932, Q. D. Leavis bemoaned the growth of popular fiction as simple escape. More positive overall was the growth of books as constructions of word and image, not just through illustrations but in all aspects of design, layout and increasingly through pictorial dust jackets in books of all kinds. Design of covers and binding revealed much about contents, with the Left Book Club and its rival Right Book Club the most extreme, declaring their content and political stance. In new homes, books became a way of presenting the owners’ tastes to visitors; the design of Penguin Books in particular made purchasing easier and cheaper, and also offered books of many kinds, identifiable by colour-coded covers, to new readers.

“I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam,” exclaimed the British polymath Charles Babbage to his colleague John Herschel one day in 1821, as they worked together to correct a batch of mathematical tables riddled with errors. With that outburst, according to his memoirs, Babbage envisioned the first computer. The machine he conceived was colossal, a cogwheel behemoth comprising twenty-five thousand parts, planned to measure seven feet long and to weigh fifteen tons. The British government invested £17,500 in it—the cost of twenty-two new locomotives—yet after eleven years of hard labor Babbage’s unfinished difference engine was abandoned. But what if construction had succeeded? That’s the question sci-fi writers William Gibson and Bruce Sterling asked a century and a half later, their answer serving as the premise of The Difference Engine, a novel in which the information age overtakes Victorian England. As a work of speculative fiction the book was a deep meditation on the interdependence of technology and society, destined to have an intellectual impact nearly as significant as Gibson’s breakthrough Neuromancer, in which he introduced the idea of cyberspace. Also like Neuromancer, arguably the first cyberpunk novel, The Difference Engine was to spawn a vast subculture. Steampunk, as the cult was dubbed, was actually named several years before The Difference Engine was published, in a 1987 letter to the genre magazine Locus, penned by the sci-fi writer K. W. Jeter. “Personally, I think Victorian fantasies are going to be the next big thing, as long as we can come up with a fitting collective term,” he wrote. “Something based on the appropriate technology of that era; like ‘steampunks,’ perhaps.” James P. Blaylock, another writer of these “Victorian fantasies,” seconded Jeter’s suggestion in the following issue, and the subgenre was sufficiently established by the time The Difference Engine was published in 1990 that the Locus editors decreed it “ not steampunk, because it is a work of hard sf.”

Abstract After the death of their father in 1818, Agnes Strickland and her sister Elizabeth published historical fiction for children. Thomas Campbell, editor of the New Monthly Magazine, printed some of her translations of Petrarch’s son­ nets. She was a prolific contributor to the gift books and annuals, especially to the Keepsake, the Forget-Me-Not, and Friendship’s Offering. She brought out a metrical romance Worcester Field in 1826 and The Seven Ages ef Woman the following year. But she became most well known as a historian after publishing, from 1840 to 1848, with Elizabeth, the Lives ef the Queens of England; this twelve-volume set was followed by several other major historical works, all of which showed strong Stuart partisanship.

The second chapter of The Center of the World: Regional Writing and the Puzzles of Place-Time, titled “Local Knowledge and Book-Learning,” offers a revision of received American literary history. It argues that the figure of the schoolteacher personates the contested connection between the particular place and the world beyond. The one-room schoolhouse, in particular, is a site where provincial and metropolitan or cosmopolitan knowledges meet. These topoi play an important role in local color fiction in the nineteenth century, and persist into later periods. The chapter includes Southern, Midwestern, Appalachian, and New England examples; the difference between African-American and Native American representations proves especially revealing. The chapter also considers the implications of this work for college and university teachers, arguing for acknowledgement of their commonalities with primary and secondary school teachers.

Abstract ‘It’s not the facts, it’s the narrative they’re arranged to tell’, she reminded hcrself. Powerful writers lose none of their myth-making capacity when they turn their attention to the art of autobiography. Until very recently John Henry Newman’s Apologia, or Anthony Trollope’s An Autobiography provided the framework within which their lives were retold and interpreted by others. In their stories of their own lives they selected, created, and explored the events and emotions that they grew to believe had shaped their subsequent work. The correlation thus provided between the life and the work holds a simple, self-confirming, and therefore compelling, construction for later readers. Mrs Oliphant’s Autobiography forms no exception to this rule. Therefore, although I have chosen to interweave her life and work throughout this book, it seemed helpful to begin by providing three different ways of looking at her life. The chapter starts by recounting the main events of her life, largely in her own words,2 while highlighting those aspects that were to prove particularly significant to the nature of her writing. The second section considers her own arrangement of the narrative she wished to present, along with the ‘textual harassment’ her account suffered at the hands of her first editors. The final section offers some alternative readings of the story of her life.

Abstract Of the writers discussed in this book, Katherine Mansfield was one of the few who entered a militarized zone in the Great War, and perhaps the only one who entered it for the ‘wrong’ reason. She did not go to drive an ambulance, to report, to propagandize or to mourn. Instead, she went to pursue a love affair with Francis Carco, a French soldier who was stationed just east of Dijon. At Carco’s invitation, she left England on 15 February 1915 for the French town of Gray, located in a zone forbidden to women visitors. Mansfield’s first thought was to masquerade as a pregnant wife. She settled on the ruse of visiting a sickrelative (with Corporal Carco pretending to be a helpful stranger) and just managed to get past the authorities: ‘The last old paman who saw my passport, “M le Colonel” ... nearly sent me back.’ She spent four days with Carco and then returned precipitately to England.

In sixteenth-century England Amadis was known to elite readers primarily through the French version published in the 1540s. A wider audience gained access at the end of the century, with the first English translations by Anthony Munday of book I (1590) and book II (1595), and the anonymous book V (1598). In this period Amadis was both applauded as the reading of ‘mighty potentates’ and condemned as a ‘wanton’ book, full of extreme fabulations. This dichotomy structures the chapter, which begins by examining Amadis as the favourite book of the Spanish and French courts, lauded as a repository of eloquence and a book of fine love. Amadis features widely in English poetry, fiction, and drama of this period, for example in the works of Sidney, Spenser, and Greene, as an exemplar of romance reading.

Abstract The conclusion describes a new approach to the history of women writers in England, as both advocated and exemplified in this book. By understanding authorship as encompassing a diversity of roles besides original creation of texts, scholars can see women writers in their work as editors, translators, and adaptors. Women writers and their publishers adapted paratextual models already in use by male writers to suit their own purposes and the texts they were creating and marketing. Readers, too, are important in shaping meaning. This view of alternative authorship and literary history as a form of reception study provides a model for other historical studies of people who have left incomplete archives due to being from marginalized economic and geographic backgrounds or racial and gender identities.
