Our modern spaces are a result of a history of architects losing agency to technology. In the era of climate control spaces and the digital interfaces of social media, a sense of place and association with others is lost to enclosed spaces of satellite conversations detailed with attention to standardization rather than customization. These desires for comfort and control manifest in the lack of friction in our built realm. Spaces mirror the scaleless quality of the digital, impose no physical friction of environment and allow for isolation between bodies in the same room. Boarded in these spaces with the disappearing digital threshold, our friends fall in the same political silos as ourselves, empathy for others falters, context is arbitrary and we never have to be 'alone' when we have our phones. The tech industry tries to offer solutions to alleviate these problems with apps and devices. However, without a violent change in environment - engaging the physicality of the body, its senses and its association to others and site, the problems will persist. 'Bodyscapes' is a series of provocations at varying scales that subvert the language of corporate standardization to allow new opportunities for human interface where the public and private realm meet.

Streszczenie:
Humans were made to move. Many hours in front of a screen leads to stiff bodies and a diminished bodily awareness. The aim of this project was to explore how technology can serve to increase our body awareness and adapt to our physical conditions in everyday life with focus on office spaces. The study is explorative with a user-centered approach and a focus on embodied prototyping, where the user is a subject of design. Data was collected with recordings, interviews, and workshops. Reflexion-on-action, prototyping and iterations lead to the final outcome. The final concept is a wearable that encourage people to move and stretch out more often and spontaneously throughout the day. It does so by vibration patterns along your spine and shoulders. The idea of this concepts is to make people move often and regularly during the day; to react spontaneously to a reminder from the body, mediated by the vibrations. The system is thought to be self-awarding; if it feels good to stretch out, to extend the arms, to move – then you will want to do it again.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is an investigation into the legitimacy and limits of the term "body art" in its vernacular sense, wherein it refers to methods of decorating or ornamenting the body, such as tattooing or piercing. Though the term is widely used and widely understood, it has rarely appeared in any writing which takes an explicitly arthistorical or art-critical approach, and has never been subjected to any sustained analysis which uses the methodologies deployed by specialists when engaging with other forms of art. If tattooing and its coincident technologies are "body art", they have not as yet been understood as such by art historians. The arguments made over the course of this work thus amount to a case for the applicability of art-historical and art-theoretical methodologies to body modification practice. The thesis first establishes the existence of a rhetorical yet broadly undefended case for the artistic status of practices which alter the form of the body. This claim is to be found amongst both the contemporary subcultural body modification community and amongst plastic surgeons. With particular reference to theories of art and aesthetics by John Dewey, Richard Shusterman, and Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, the work investigates whether such claims are tenable. In light of these investigations, the thesis then presents a number of problems which immediately arise from such a claim - problems of authorship, ownership, objectivity and value - and attempts to resolve them through detailed analysis of a number of case-studies.

Streszczenie:
People are generally quite good at adapting to changes in body shape and size because of the flexibility of the body representation. By means of bodily illusions, it is possible to experimentally induce updating of body representation and, thus, manipulate the sense of self. The main aim of this thesis is to investigate the sense of self through bodily illusions. Firstly, we investigated the relationship between the sense of ownership and self-localisation (Study 1). The results from this study are taken to suggest that the proprioceptive drift (i.e. a bias in the localisation of a given body part) is more likely triggered by and related to the visual capture of touch than it is a reliable measure of a shift in the sense of body ownership. In fact, our data show that the proprioceptive drift occurs not only in the absence of a shift in the sense of ownership, but even in the absence of a body-like object. Secondly, we investigated self-localisation of body parts by means of a novel illusion, the Disappearing Hand Trick. In particular, we explored the role of vision and proprioception (Study 2), as well as the role of attention and motor acts (Study 3), in locating one’s own hands when visual and proprioceptive information regarding the body are incongruent. Our data (Study 2) are in line with previous research, confirming a predominant role of vision over proprioception. In addition, they show that, after a certain amount of time, proprioception is weighted more heavily than vision. That is, our results demonstrate that the cortical proprioceptive representations can be updated even when there is no real need to do it (i.e. no movement is required). This might be seen as an evolutionarily convenient response to keep the body ready for a possible quick reaction. In Study 3, we ruled out the possibility that this effect was only driven by spatial attention being directed towards the side of the space where the hand was actually located. In fact, no difference in the localisation accuracy was found when the direction of spatial attention was manipulated. Finally, by asking the participants to reach across for their hidden right hand (Study 3), we confirmed that a motor act accelerates the reliance on proprioception, most likely by aligning the motor and perceptual coordinates in order to plan the movement. In the first three studies, a modification of the body representation was intentionally induced – namely, the purpose of the illusions was to change how the participants perceived their body. However, we wondered whether this same change might also occur at a more implicit level and how rapidly this may occur. We designed two different studies in which we tried to manipulate the participants’ perceived body size by providing incongruent information about the position of their limb (Study 4) or by showing the participants images of unrealistic bodies (Study 5). In Study 4 we showed that incongruent proprioceptive information coming from the same joint does not affect the perceived size of that body part, but does lead to a more accurate estimation of its position. On the other hand, the results of Study 5 would seem to suggest that body perception is more vulnerable to change in women than in men after exposure to same-sex ideal bodies. Taken together, these results suggest that, by manipulating the body representation, both explicitly, by means of a variety of bodily illusion, and even implicitly, by generating subtle incongruence between one’s own real body and how the body ‘should’ be, we were able to shed some light on the mechanisms behind the computation of body position and size, both of which are important elements for the definition of the self.

Brown, Joshua D. "Male body image: testosterone's response to body comparisons". Texas A&M University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3818.

Streszczenie:
Although there have been only a few etiological studies that have examined the development and maintenance of body image in males, research fairly consistently reports that exposure and presumed comparison to images of ideal male bodies increases body dissatisfaction. Social comparison provides individuals with a mechanism by which to evaluate their body appearance to those around them. When individuals compare their bodies to those of others, they are attempting to gauge their standing or status relative to those around them, the results of which have inherent status implications. There is increasing empirical evidence that suggests perceived increases in status result in increased testosterone levels, whereas testosterone decreases when status is perceived as having been diminished. Thus, the core of the present study: can the process of comparing the appearance of one’s body to that of others affect the testosterone levels, body satisfaction, and mood of males? To examine the above research questions, a two-part study was designed. A pilot study was conducted with 117 male undergraduates primarily to examine the psychometrics of measures to be used in the main study. The measures appeared psychometrically sound and were thus used in the main study. In the main study, 129 male undergraduates were exposed to photographs of one of three male body types (i.e., lean/muscular, skinny, average) to determine whether or not exposure to the different body types differentially affected participants’ testosterone levels, body satisfaction, and mood. Results indicate that testosterone levels decreased over the course of the experiment in each of the three groups; however, the body type to which participants were exposed did not differentially affect participants’ testosterone levels. Body dissatisfaction was greater among participants who viewed lean/muscular bodies than those who viewed average bodies. Lastly, mood was not differentially affected by viewing different types of male bodies. Implications and possible explanations for these results are discussed.

Court, Gudrun Elizabeth. "Body change and body image in older adulthood". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/27829.

Streszczenie:
Background: In the course of their lives, individuals evolve a body image, which can be challenged due to ageing. Individuals who have difficulties reconciling their body image with reality may resort to various strategies, such as exercise and dieting, in order to cope. These behaviours may in turn result in more severe psychological problems, e.g. eating disorders, which are under researched in older adults. Body image, body change, physical illness and ways of coping with ageing have been researched to various degrees in older adults, but these findings have not been integrated. To justify the further investigation of eating disorders in older adults, these previous findings should be integrated and confirmed in a representative sample of the general population. The aim of this study was to assess gender differences in body image and to explore the associations between physical & psychological health and body image in an older adult non-clinical sample. Methods: The study was between groups, cross-sectional in design comprising of a single administration of a combined self-report questionnaire as no intervention requiring a follow up was offered. The non-clinical sample was recruited through multiple channels i.e. community centres, church groups and the staff of a large teaching hospital. 103 women aged 50-96 and 57 men aged 50-84 returned a total of 160 completed questionnaires (80.0% of the questionnaires distributed). Results: Older women were found to have more body image concerns than older men. Older women's body image concern was found to be associated with BMI, whereas older men's body image concern was associated with BMI and physical health. Older women and men presented with similar negative attitudes towards ageing. Both older women and older men desired weight loss despite being of normal weight, although this was more common in older women. Physical illness was not associated with psychological symptoms, physical illness was directly associated with body image concerns in older men only, while body image concerns in older women were associated with age controlling behaviours. Summary: The current study demonstrates that the many of the associations relating to body image in younger populations are also present in older adults. These results, in combination with the literature on the aetiology of eating disorders, which emphasises the association with body image discontent, provides sufficient justification for epidemiological work to establish the prevalence of eating disorders in older adults. Ultimately, the current study serves as a staging point between the vast literature on body image in younger populations & the limited literature on body image in older adults and future research investigating gender differences in the components of body images.

This thesis in partnership with Institut Curie and Siemens Healthineers explores the use of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for cancer prognosis, focusing on non-Hodgkin lymphomas, especially follicular lymphoma (FL) and diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Assuming that current biomarkers computed in PET images overlook significant information, this work focuses on the search for new biomarkers in whole-body PET imaging. An initial manual approach validated a previously identified feature (tumor fragmentation) and explored the prognostic significance of splenic involvement in DLBCL, finding that the volume of splenic involvement does not further stratify patients with such an involvement. To overcome the empirical limitations of the manual search, a semi-automatic feature identification method was developed. It consisted in the automatic extraction of thousands of candidate biomarkers and there subsequent testing by a selection pipeline design to identify features quantifying new prognostic information. The selected biomarkers were then analysed and re-encoded in simpler and more intuitive ways. Using this approach, 22 new image-based biomarkers were identified, reflecting biological information about the tumours, but also the overall health status of the patient. Among them, 10 features were found prognostic of both FL and DLBCL patient outcome. The thesis also addresses the challenge of using these features in clinical practice, proposing the Individual Coefficient Approximation for Risk Estimation (ICARE) model. This machine learning model, designed to reduce overfitting and improve generalizability, demonstrated effectiveness in the HECKTOR 2022 challenge for predicting outcomes from head and neck cancer patients [18F]-PET/CT scans. This model was also found to overfit less than other machine learning methods on an exhaustive comparison using a benchmark of 71 medical datasets. All these developments were implemented in a software extension of a prototype developed by Siemens Healthineers

Streszczenie:
Body depilation, or the reduction or removal of body hair, is a relatively new area of research inquiry. Although women in many industrialized cultures have engaged in depilation for several decades, this behavior has been documented only recently among men. Though originally thought to be widely practiced by women and only a small proportion of men, including athletes or bodybuilders, recent studies suggest that more men engage in body depilation than previously hypothesized. In fact, one recent study estimated the prevalence of men's body depilation at 83.7% which suggests that men are depilating at rates similar to women. Nevertheless sparse literature exists on the topic of depilation and its relationship to the overall body image of women and men, factors that predict depilation, and how the appearance of body hair may be related to body satisfaction, body image disturbance, and symptoms consistent with the clinical disorder known as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Clinical issues thought to be associated with body depilation include physical injuries that put men and women at risk for infection as well as psychological risks including BDD. The goals of this research project were to: (a) further explore the depilation practices of both genders, (b) develop and evaluate three scales directly related to body depilation research, (c) identify predictors of depilation among both genders; (d) examine the correlates of depilation, (e) apply and further test theoretical models to explain depilation among both genders, and (e) examine demographic differences in body image disturbance and BDD while controlling for natural body hair growth. In support of the hypotheses, results indicated that men have greater levels of body hair growth at 12 discretely measured body sites compared to women, and that overall, body depilation prevalence is high (90.8%) among the individuals sampled. Depilation prevalence for women was 98.5% while 80.9% for men. Men were more likely to report depilation in the past, having ceased the behavior to allow natural hair growth to resume. Men were also significantly more likely to engage in hair reduction behaviors, e.g., trimming, rather than removing hair all together compared to women. Women reported a significantly greater frequency of injuries as a result of depilation, while men reported greater dissatisfaction with higher levels of chest or back hair growth. Instruments were developed and evaluated to measure depilation appearance comparison, depilation social norms, and body hair growth. In terms of predictors of depilation, appearance comparison was a predictor for both genders, while the drive for muscularity was a unique predictor for men. Theoretical paradigms associated with depilation included Social Comparison Theory, and in part, a belief that depilation is socially normative. Results also provided partial support for hypotheses related to gender, racial/ethnic, and sexual orientation differences in body image disturbance and BDD symptomatology. Overall, the results of this study provide support for the notion that body depilation is a key appearance and body image concern for both genders, though more so for men, but also suggest that more research is needed in order to better understand the role of the appearance of hair on the human body.

To explore the potential of packaging design structures in menswear. While packaging design and fashion design are two distinctively different fields, their methodologies are distinctively similar. To compare packaging and garment design is therefore to compare their development process and purpose in terms of structure, material, color and print, as well as aspects concerning production and marketing. Both fields aim to create designs that are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing within their particular context; the fundamental contextual difference being that packaging is conceived for a product and garments conceived for a body. Focusing on structure, both packaging and fashion design may use product templates to facilitate mass production. In fashion design these templates are called construction patterns; in packaging design templates are called packaging nets or development nets. Both construction patterns and packaging nets are 2-d structures that gain a three dimensional form according to a construction system, e.g. constructing a box from a flat element using folding techniques. For this bachelor degree work the aim is to explore the potential of packaging design structures in menswear. The result is a lineup of outfits generated by the adoption of packaging nets as construction patterns for garments. Since the outfits are created using packaging design principles and methods, they challenge the contextual distinction both between garment and packaging, and between body and product. By considering garments as packaging for the body, the collection blurs the line between fashion design and packaging design. I believe that the intersection of these two branches of design allows us not only to discover new forms of expression and construction, but also to gain a new perspective on fashion design practice. In addition to structural properties, by also considering the graphic aspect of packaging design, this collection highlights the importance of product differentiation and thus serves as a starting point for future fashion experiments with product branding.

BODY ANAGRAM is a number of hand stitched sculptures, a growing collection of mountable body parts that can be organized and screwed together in different ways. The process of stitching and sculpting bodies is metaphorically compared to the art of anagrams, wordplays. Their common reversibility between recognition and destruction is discussed. Psychological perspectives on intersubjective, as well as subject-object relationships are used to explain what can happen when people and sculptures meet. How can common emotional experiences of relationships be embodied through human-like textile sculptures? This question is processed in video documentations of people interacting with the sewn body parts. These meetings as well as collaborations around the making of the film, “Your hands and their hands”, are explored further in this paper.

Streszczenie:
There is evidence that men are experiencing body image dissatisfaction in growing numbers. The term muscle dysmorphia has been used to describe one expression of extreme body image distress and is thought to be particularly prevalent in male body-builders. This study aimed to explore male body-builders understanding and experiences of their body image. A grounded theory methodology was used, situated within a contextual constructionist epistemology. Five male body-builders were interviewed and the transcripts analysed. Control emerged as the core concept, expressing participants' feelings of control loss and attempts to mediate this. Four higher order categories emerged as areas where issues of control were most obvious self-image gym culture social pressures and health beliefs and behaviours. A model of the relationships between the categories and control was developed. Feelings of uncertainty about self in relation to body image were evident. Mediation occurred through attempts to control the social environment leading to further immersion within the gym culture. Nutritional beliefs and diet behaviours were another way in which the participants' attempted to exert control over their body image. Implications for clinical practice were discussed, with particular emphasis on men presenting to services expressing distress about their body image in relation to body fat and physique. Recommendations for future research were made and limitations of the study were discussed.

Streszczenie:
This thesis explored the relationship between cognitive biases to body size and one’s developed levels of body image concerns and weight status. Women with higher body image concerns were hypothesised to process body-related information in a biased fashion, specifically, to choose thin body ideals and rate thinner bodies higher on attractiveness, display an attentional bias towards thin bodies, and to estimate their own body size inaccurately. In study 1 (N = 84), although an attentional bias to thin bodies was not found, a positive thinness bias in young females was identified and related to one’s level of body image concerns. In study 2 (N = 61), an even more pronounced positive thinness bias was identified in a female sample with average to high levels of body image concerns. The study provided evidence that this bias can be successfully modified and that shifting the interpretation of body size can result in less extreme attitudes towards body size and improve one’s negative body image. Study 3 showed that a positive attitude towards thin female bodies exists in both young men (N = 67) and women (N = 67), but the choice of attractiveness ideals is related to one’s body image only when judging the bodies of one’s own gender. Study 4 (N = 87) indicated that regardless of one’s weight status, women higher in body image concerns present a greater discrepancy between their estimated and ideal size. However, the magnitude of one’s body size underestimation and inaccuracy in judging the amount of weight one would need to lose to achieve their body ideal was related to body image concerns for overweight and obese, but not normal weight women. Overall, the results show that cognitive body biases exist in young women and are related to one’s body image concerns and weight status.

Streszczenie:
This thesis presents results regarding one dimensional many-body quantum systems, obtained by considering the few-body physics of their constituent particles, and through use of traditional quantum mechanical techniques such as scattering theory and the variational principle. Choosing a perspective from which the connection between the microscopic behaviour of the systems’ constituents and its macroscopic properties is apparent, we investigate two one-dimensional many-body systems: a flat-banded optical lattice and a fermionic Luttinger liquid. Our choice of approach allows us to give a transparent description of the low-energy physics of both systems. For the former, we find that the low-energy eigenstates may be written down directly in terms of position space creation operators, and that they admit a simple and intuitive interpretation in terms of the position space behaviour of the atoms occupying the lattice. For the latter, we employ few-body scattering theory to investigate a long-held but (until now) untested belief about the parameters appearing in Luttinger’s model, a general effective low-energy description of one-dimensional quantum systems. We find this interpretation to be untenable, and give arguments as to how the parameters should correctly be regarded.

Streszczenie:
Thesis (BTech (Surface Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010
Forms of body adornment and scarification practices have been around since the origin of mankind. Many forms of traditional body adornment have evolved overtime and still exist within our mainstream society today, however examples of recent body adornments, show that although still very much in practice, in many cases the meaning has been lost. The motivational routes of western adornments are today based on what looks good as apposed to a ritual or right of passage that marks one's body for life. Therefore, the aim of this dissertation is to share the value of representation with the viewer - as representation has played, and continues to play, such an important role within the social aspect of mankind. Bycreating a link between traditional practices of African body adornmentl scarification and connecting these with body expression and representation within my own sub-cultural context, I hope to create awareness of body adornment throughout time. Finally the practical component of this research will consist of a portfolio of different photographs and videos documenting the process and completion of adorning different female bodies. These works of art will be traditionally inspired, nonpermanent three-dimensional body art that will also undoubtedly represent selfexpression and comment on 'trendv' sub-cultural society. As Idocument my progress and work it is hoped that I portray in a conceptual framework, a life cycle that comments on the evolution of culture from rural to urban, and from traditional to Western, and how Western lifestyle is diluting our social being with trends rather than using the method of body adornment as a cultural conversation.

Streszczenie:
Long-term body temperature measurements for research and diagnosis are currently done in hospitals or specialized research labs. This method has several drawbacks: the use of wired ob- trusive sensors (e.g., rectal probes to measure the core body temperature) may be uncomfortable for patients. Furthermore, situations recorded in laboratory settings do not reflect reality as patients are not subject to their normal living environment. Furthermore, it is labor-intensive to regularly check upon patients and care for their well-being. Using small wireless sensor nodes in a body sensor network to measure body functions, one can mostly offset the limitations listed above. For this work, we have developed a wireless sensor node that uses an infrared thermopile as a sensor to unobtrusively measure the core temperature at the tympanic membrane. Due to their construction, these sensors are heavily dependent on the ambient temperature in the surroundings of the sensor packaging. While this does not affect their use in single-shot measurements (e.g., using an ear thermometer), it poses a challenge for continuous measurements, as common living environments do not have constant ambient air temperatures and people frequently commute between different places. These conditions may offset measurements significantly, an important problem for medical applications that require high accuracy. In this work, we employ infrared thermopiles in a body sensor network and characterize their behaviour in various situations, especially in the presence of varying environmental conditions. Based on our observations, we describe methods for post-processing measurements in order to compensate environmental changes and hence get results reflecting reality more closely. Our evaluation shows that these methods can offset the infrared thermopile’s weakness but need further work to achieve the degree of accuracy that is needed for medical applications.

Streszczenie:
The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to investigate two general hypotheses derived from theories on the aetiology and maintenance of medically unexplained symptoms (MUS); first, that a dysfunction in attention to the body contributes to the experience of MUS, and second, that MUS are a result of distortions in body representation. Experiments 1 to 5 investigated attention in MUS. This work focused on experimentally investigating previous hypotheses on the subject, namely that people with MUS have an attentional bias for the body, or that they have a dysfunction in the processing of sensory stimuli. Five methods were developed, and used with analogue (Experiments 1,2,4 and 5) and clinical (Experiment 3) MUS participants. Clinical MUS participants showed a stronger attentional orientation effect for visual stimuli than control participants, which may suggest they are attending away from their bodies, and people with analogue MUS found it more difficult to switch away from the tactile modality, suggesting a disengagement deficit. These results point to a more subtle between-groups difference in the dynamics of attention, which is present not just for the body and for tactile stimuli, but also in other modalities. Experiments 6 to 8 investigated whether MUS were associated with alterations in experience of a perceptual illusion (the 'rubber hand illusion'), in both analogue (Experiment 6 and 8) and clinical (Experiment 7) groups. The clinical MUS group showed stronger experience of this illusion than control participants. Effects in analogue MUS samples differed between experiments, with one group showing lower illusion experience (Experiment 6) and one group showing higher experience (Experiment 8). This suggests firstly that body representation is altered in MUS, and secondly that MUS are associated with large individual differences in body experience. Experiment 8 probed whether these differences were due to alterations in attention and body-focus. Results suggested that there is a complex interaction between attention and experience of the illusion. The work presented here has challenged the traditional assumption that a general attentional bias for the body is present in MUS, provided important information about attentional deficits in MUS and how they might best be empirically assessed in future work, and supported the conception of MUS as distortions in the process of body representation.

Streszczenie:
This thesis considers wearable antennas that are useful for body-centric communication systems. Novel wearable printed monopoles with flexible neoprene substrates and drapable conductive elements have been designed, synthesized and measured with respect to their on-body performance. Starting with a comprehensive literature review of wearable antennas this work contains an introduction to wearable antenna designs, flexible materials for wearable antenna fabrication, human body models and the impacts of the human body on the efficiency of small wearable antennas. Definitions of material effective and total conductivity, the calculations of antenna Q and mutual couplings between antennas and the human body using the Method of Moment (MoM) are presented. Four types of flexible printed monopoles have been designed and measured. They are two single band monopoles for ISM (433.05 434.79 MHz) service, one multiband monopole for GSM 900 (890 960 MHz), DCS (1710 1880 MHz), PCS (1850 1990 MHz), UMTS (1920 2170 MHz), and WLAN2.4GHz (2400-2484MHz) frequency bands and a UWB band antenna (3.1-10.6GHz) respectively. Effects of the ground plane dimensions on printed monopoles are illustrated first by changing the dimensions thereof and subsequently by adding wing structures. The new designs yield improved impedance match for printed monopoles. It also shows how meander lines can used to miniaturize antennas and add additional resonances. Models of the human body were created in Microstripes, a 3D electromagnetic (EM) simulator, to analysis the impacts of the human body on the performance of the wearable antennas mentioned above.

Streszczenie:
The internet is a novel medium for delivering behavioural modification weight loss programs and owing to its widespread accessibility it has the potential to treat at the population level. This thesis aimed to evaluate the effects of a unique web-based behaviour change program (WBP) called 'Imperative Health' on weight loss in an overweight/ obese population at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVO) using a randomised controlled trial. In total, 65 participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups for 12 months: the control group (usual care) or the intervention group (WBP). Assessments were conducted at baseline, 3-, 6- and 12-months. The primary outcome of this study was between-group change in weight loss at 3 months. Secondary outcomes included between-group change in the following health outcomes: CVD risk factors, health-related quality of life, emotional states and self efficacy. The intervention group achieved a mean weight loss of -4.4 ± 3.5 kg at 3 months; the control group lost -0.54 ± 3.0 kg, overall this accounted for a Significant mean weight difference of -3.66 kg after adjusting for baseline weight between the groups (P <0.001). No treatment effect was observed between the groups in the longer term (12 months). A substantial impact on the majority of the above health outcomes irrespective of weight loss was not observed. Web-based programs for weight loss have the potential to reach large proportions of the population and the ability to promote modest weight loss in the short term. It is difficult, however, to ascertain their long term effectiveness as a result of their associated high attrition and non-usage attrition rates. Solutions are required to enhance engagement levels in the longer term in order to maximise the potential of WBPs for weight management to treat obesity at the population level.

This study will look into to the concepts of Peripersonal Space, The Body Schema and The Body Image. It examines how the terms are typically used and describes the various views about the concepts found in the literature, as well as the contradictions between these views. In the section “The Difficulty to Differentiate the Concepts” the reader gets a deeper understanding of which criteria researchers use to differentiate the concepts from one another. The fact that there are changes in kineamethic model and sensation in humans when they are using a rake is proposed as support for the idea that also the body schema is involved in tool use. In differentiating the Body schema – Body Image from each other (and other types of body representation) we come to the conclusion that positive definitions about different representations is needed and that researchers should unite their views what the definitions should be. We also mention a problem based on the possibility on infinite body representations and a solution by a Bayesian model is proposed that looks at the input as well as the output in experiments.

Ce nouveau type de réseau est appelé réseau corporel sans fil (BBN: Body-to-Body Network). Motivated by the rising demand for remote and improved healthcare, while decreasing the cost of using network infrastructures to ensure time and data rate-constrained applications, Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) still form a strongly growing research field. Besides, engineers and researchers are investigating new solutions to supplement mobile communications through developing opportunities for cooperative WBANs. In this context, using network users themselves as relays could complement and extend existing infrastructure networks, while improving network capacity and promoting radio spectrum usage. Yet, network operators, that are already planning for the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing technologies integration, should also think about this new possibility of creating a new type of mobile ad hoc network, where network users themselves are used as simplified ad hoc base stations, to fulfill the desire of sharing real-time information between colocated persons carrying body sensors. This emerging type of network is called Body-to-Body Network (BBN). In a BBN, a radio device situated on one person gathers the sensor data from the sensor nodes worn by that person, and transmit them to a transceiver situated on another person in the nearby area, in order to be processed or relayed to other BBN users. BBNs can find applications in a range of areas such as healthcare, team sports, military, entertainment, as well as exciting social networking experiences. Operating in the popular Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band, the communication links in a BBN will be heavily susceptible to interference between the different radio technologies sharing the limited radio spectrum. Thus, inter-body interference become an important concern for protocol design and quality of service for the BBN end user. Yet, higher layer MAC and networking mechanisms need to be in place to overcome this interference problem. To date, very few studies, that perform in-depth analysis of this type of body-centric scenario, exist. The interference problem in such distributed system, should be tackeled with distributed mechanisms, such as Game Theory. The decision makers in the game are either the WBANs/people forming the BBN or the network operators who control the inter-WBAN communicating devices. This thesis aims at exploring the opportunities to enable inter-WBAN communications by ensuring feasible sharing of the radio spectrum through two challenging research issues. In a first phase, a game theoretical approach is proposed to resolve the distributed interference problem in BBNs. The Socially-aware Interference Mitigation (SIM) game performs twofold: at the WBAN stage, it allocates ZigBee channels to body sensors for intra-WBAN data sensing, and at the BBN stage, it allocates WiFi channels to mobile devices for inter-WBAN data transmitting and relaying. Two algorithms, BR-SIM and SORT-SIM, were developed to search for Nash equilibra to the SIM game. The first (BR-SIM) ensures best response solutions while the second (SORT-SIM) attempts to achieve tradeoff between sub-optimal solutions and short convergence time. Then, in order to highlight the social role of BBNs, the second part of this thesis is devoted to propose an epidemic control application tailored to BBNs, in indoor environment. Streszczenie:
John Paul II’s theological anthropology, the Theology of the Body, seeks to articulate how the experience of being loved and of loving is foundational to a person’s realising selfhood and meaning. John Paul’s particular phenomenological focus is upon the love manifest in spousal relationships, including their sexual aspect. The task he sets himself is to articulate how spousal love and the human body mutually disclose each other and point to God. John Paul’s hermeneutical task is to ‘re-read the language of the body in truth.’ He begins by giving an extended interpretation of the Genesis creation narratives then applies the truths he finds they disclose (the person as made for love, as gifted, as sacramental sign) to a theological interpretation of the living and embodied person. This thesis considers John Paul’s findings in the context of select contemporary theologians similarly interested in the body and in language. In line with some key suppositions of John Paul’s methodology, metaphor (and poetics more generally) is held to be strongly present in the material world, including in acts of thinking, communicating, and interpreting. Following John Paul’s phenomenological method, this thesis applies and extends it in two ways. Firstly, by looking at how literary texts (particular phenomena experienced in the mind and the body) and the body (as that through which one encounters all phenomena) can be read as mutually disclosive ‘texts,’ each of which is truth-bearing. To that end, a number of late twentieth-century poems whose subjects deal in some way with the maternal figure of Mary are read as linguistic embodiments of the human through which truths about what it is to be human are evoked. Secondly, this thesis reads the poetics of the maternal ‘obstetric’ body, through the lens of the Virgin Mary, thereby extending John Paul’s anthropological findings to a new subject. Integrating the Virgin Mary within theological anthropology opens the way for a new, somatically-grounded Mariology.

Streszczenie:
The goal of this project was to make a shirt with three embedded IMU sensors (Inertial Measurement Unit) that can measure a person’s movements throughout an entire workday. This can provide information about a person’s daily routine movements and aid in finding activities which can lead to work-related injuries in order to prevent them. The objective was hence to construct a sensor fusion framework that could retrieve the measurements from these three sensors and to create an estimate of the human body orientation and to estimate the angular movements of the arms. This was done using an extended Kalman filter which uses the accelerometer and magnetometer values to retrieve the direction of gravity and north respectively, thus providing a coordinate system that can be trusted in the long term. Since this method is sensitive to quick movements and magnetic disturbance, gyroscope measurements were used to help pick up quick movements. The gyroscope measurements need to be integrated in order to get the angle, which means that we get accumulated errors. This problem is reduced by the fact that we retrieve a correct long-term reference without accumulated errors from the accelerometer and magnetometer measurements. The Kalman filter estimates three quaternions describing the orientation of the upper body and the two arms. These quaternions were then translated into Euler angles in order to get a meaningful description of the orientations. The measurements were stored on a memory card or broadcast on both the local net and the Internet. These data were either used offline in Matlab or shown in real-time in the program Unity 3D. In the latter case the user could see that a movement gives rise to a corresponding movement on a skeleton model on the screen.

Streszczenie:
The research component, "Body and Soul", is an interdisciplinary, comparative study of the essay form, focusing on the Weimar period. The essay is a marginal literary genre, which, like much documentary style photography, attempts "the imaginative recreation of a culture, a period or an individual". August Sander's photographic opus, People of the 20th Century and Robert Musil's essayistic novel, The Man Without Qualities invite comparison as complex and problematic portraits of their respective societies. Sander's typological portraits are well known and his legacy informs much of contemporary documentary photography. Sixty images were published in 1929 by Kurt Wolff, Transmare Verlag, Munich, as Antlitz der Zeit (Face of Our Time) with an introduction by Alfred D??blin. The rust two volumes of Robert Musil's, Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (The Man Without Qualities), were published in 1930 and 1932 by Rowohlt Verlag, Hamburg. Recent publication of new editions of both Musil's and Sander's works prompted the attempt to reconcile two portraits of people and events of the early decades of the 20th Century in Germany and Austria. The essay form in literature and the documentary style in photography are examined with regard to the polemic associated with truth and reality. This review attempts to illustrate the inevitable inclusion of the fictional element into the fabric of both forms of investigation. The study concludes with a review of contemporary art practice in photo-documentary and some thoughts on future developments. The studio component, "Dargan", is a photographic essay of a site in the Blue Mountains West of Sydney. Focusing on relics of industrial activity in the region, and their effects on the landscape, large format colour photographs were produced to establish a documentary style body of work for exhibition as large-scale colour analogue prints. The work is the response to a need to engage with the Australian landscape and to establish a sustainable practice that recognises and takes into account an ambivalent relationship with "country".
