AbstractThe journal Biserica Ortodoxă Română [The Romanian Orthodox Church] was founded on November 17, 1873, at the initiative of Romania’s Primate Metropolitan Nifon Rusailă (1789-1875). The aim of the publication – whose first issue was launched on October 1, 1874 – was to inform the clergy and believers about the activity of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church. In the 146 years since the publication of its first issue, the journal’s contributors have included outstanding personalities of the Romanian Orthodoxy, such as Priest-Professors Dumitru Stăniloae, Ioan G. Coman, Ene Branişte, Liviu Stan, Mircea Păcurariu, Ion Bria a.o. Church music was present in the journal’s pages both through articles, studies and reviews, and through scores of choral or psaltic works written by Church servants among whom Bishop Melchisedec Ștefănescu of Roman at the end of the 19th century, or Deacon Grigore Panțiru, Professor Nicolae Lungu, Priest-Professor Gheorghe Șoima, Archd. Sebastian Barbu-Bucur, Ph.D., Priest-Professors Constantin Drăgușin, Nicu Moldoveanu, Alexie Buzera a.o. in the 20th century. This paper summarizes these contributions and shows how the change of political regime in mid-20th-century Romania influenced the topics of the articles and the religious musical works published in the journal of the Romanian Patriarchate.

The following analysis aims to be an argument in favor of preserving the language specific to the church, after a “verbal polishing” expanded over an extended period of time, while slowing down the tendency in modernizing it in order to adapt the language of the ecclesiastic texts to the present form of the literary Romanian language. The matter occurs in some situations, with the result of “forcing” the specific language of these books to fit in the synchronic section, within the diachronic perspective of the language. This thing is not and will never be possible. As a matter of fact, it should never happen, as the Romanian literary language would not benefit at all from an adaptation of these ancient words and constructions used in these texts, in terms of the meaning of the sacred message spread by the word. In order to exemplify the way in which this process took place over time, we shall display, chronologically, Romanian versions of this prayer, starting with the very first version published in Romanian, the one from Evangheliarul slavo-român de la Sibiu [The Slav-Romanian Gospel from Sibiu] (1551-1553) up to 2008, which would be the version from Biblia sau Sfânta Scriptură. The present work is intended to be a retrieval of the history of the contribution of personalities that have marked the history of the Romanian Orthodox Church and, implicitly, the history of Romania. Thus, In the “Commemorative Year of the Patriarchs Nicodim Munteanu and Iustin Moisescu and of the translators of church books” in the Romanian Patriarchate, addressed to the Romanian Orthodox hierarchies and eparchies in the country and abroad, we set out to talk about the Patriarch Iustin Moisescu for understand the role it played in promoting living theology as a model, based on prayer, experience and life, even if the historical times were very difficult for the Church, the communists wanting to destroy it, because it maintained the consciousness of national identity and a hierarchy of authentic values, that opposed the atheist ideology promoted by them. Thus, starting from a brief biography of the one who was the fourth Romanian Patriarch, we were interested in the perception of contemporaries, as well as those who succeeded him, as I have not neglected his quality as a theologian, teacher university and publisher. Iustin Moisescu was an intellectual, theologian, who devoted all his energy to maintaining the right faith, to support the monastery life, to relieve the people and to give cultural brilliance to the Church, as he alone confessed.

The authors present two seals (made out of metal) of the Romanian Orthodox Church of Lipova, Arad county. Both seals have in their emblem, the religious scene of Assumption of the Virgin Mary, wich is the feast day (the dedication day) of the church of the locality. The first presented seal does not have a date, it probably comes from the 18th century. The second seal dates from 1867, the year of manufacturing the seal. They are sigillography sources for the history of this church.

En Roumanie, les changements complexes engendrés par la transition postcommuniste se sont manifestés de manière particulière dans le camp de l’éducation orthodoxe des jeunes. Interroger l’orthodoxie roumaine et surtout l’observer dans deux paroisses de Bucarest est le but de ce travail. La thèse comprend trois parties : la première, Jeunes et renouveau religieux en Roumanie aborde le problème de la transition post communiste et s’attarde particulièrement sur les aspects sociaux, économiques et religieux de la jeunesse roumaine. Confrontés à d’importants problèmes d’ordre social, économique ou culturel et à un nombre croissant de choix religieux, les jeunes roumains n’ont toutefois pas quitté la foi orthodoxe. Au contraire, l’effervescence religieuse est plus grande que dans d’autres pays de l’Europe. La deuxième partie, Roumanie, un espace marqué par le communisme cherche dans l’époque communiste les raisons de la situation actuelle. Pendant plus de quatre décennies, l’Eglise orthodoxe a été réduite au culte. Quelles ont été les conséquences sur l’Eglise orthodoxe en général, sur l’enseignement religieux en particulier et sur les jeunes sont les aspects qui nous ont intéressés tout particulièrement. La troisième partie décrit les moyens pratiques de l’éducation religieuse et s’intéresse notamment à la situation actuelle dans deux paroisses de Bucarest, à travers des études de cas, des enquêtes et des interviews faites avec des prêtres formateurs et des jeunes paroissiens
The complex changes entailed by the post communist transition in Romania had a special impact on the orthodox education of the young people. The purpose of the present thesis is to inquire the Romanian orthodoxy on this matter, more precisely to observe it within two parishes from Bucharest. The thesis is structured into three parts: the first part en titled The young and the religious revival in Romania tackles the post communist transition, insisting in particular on the social, economic and religious aspects of Romanian youth. In spite of the fact that they were confronted to numerous serious social, economic and cultural problems and to an increasing number of religious alternatives, the Romanian young people did not quit the orthodox faith. On the contrary, the religious effervescence is bigger than in other European countries. The second part, Romania, a communism marked space, tries to search into the communist period, the reasons for the present situation. For more than four decades, the Orthodox Church had been reduced to the cult. We are interested in identifying the consequences for the Orthodox Church in general, for the religious education in particular as well as for the young people. The third part describes the practical instruments used in the religious education with a special interest paid to the present situation in two parishes from Bucharest through some case studies, surveys and interviews with trainer priests and young parishioners

Ce travail est un questionnement geographique de l'espace et l'orthodoxie en roumanie. La premiere partie traite de la repartition des nationalites et des confessions sur le territoire (a travers les recensements). On constate la superposition des religions et des nationalites dans des localisations majoritairement exclusives les unes des autres une grande permanence des structures spatiales en depit de la reduction du paysage confessionnel et ethnique, l'emergence de nouvelles minorites (tsiganes et confessions neoprotestantes). Dans la seconde, est etudiee la territorialite orthodoxe, a travers l'implantation des institutions de l'orthodoxie, et la structuration locale des lieux par les pratiques religieuses. Au niveau local, deux lieux: le village autour de l'eglise et les monasteres sont retenus. Quel est le degre de centralite de l'eglise et la place du local (paroisse) dans le systeme institutionnel orthodoxe. Au niveau du monastere on tente de degager les modalites par lesquelles les communautes monastiques s'integrent dans la societe seculiere
This thesis is about space and orthodoxy in romania from a geographical point of view. In the first part, we study the distribution of nationalities and religions in the territory (from the census). We note the superposition of religions and nationalities in largely exclusive localizations, a great permanence of spatial structures in spite of the reduction of the religious and ethnic landscape and the emergence of new minorities (tziganes and new protestant churches). In the second part, we study the orthodox territoriality from the establishment of orthodox institutions and the local structuration of the space by the religious practices. At the local level two places, the village around the church and the monastery held our attention. We study the degree of centrality of the church and the place of the parish in the orthodox institutional system. As for the monastery we try to find their modalities of integration in the secular society

La chute des régimes communistes en Europe, en 1989, et les transformations sociales qui ont suivi, ont entraîné une redéfinition des relations sociopolitiques, avec des réactions importantes au niveau du champ religieux. La Roumanie, pays ex-communiste, de tradition chrétienne orthodoxe, offre un terrain intéressant pour l'étude sociologique de l'évolution du religieux dans l'est de l'Europe. Pour définir quel type de modernité religieuse s'est construit en Roumanie, après 1989, nous avons analysé l'état de la pluralisation religieuse de la société roumaine à travers la présence des nouveaux mouvements religieux. La thèse est structurée en trois parties : 1) la genèse du champ religieux roumain, 2) la redynamisation de la vie religieuse après 1989 et 3) les effets de la pluralisation religieuse. Suite à notre analyse, nous avons identifié qu'une modernité religieuse s'y construit sur des critères caractéristiques du marché libre, tandis qu'existe, au niveau de la société roumaine, un conflit entre une logique de marché et une logique de monopole, qui fait que le pluralisme religieux, évolue néanmoins très lentement et que la sécularisation soit relative et paradoxale
The Fall of the communist regime in Europe, in 1989, along with the changes that followed, brought about a redefinition of the socio-political relationships, triggering important reactions at the religious level as well. Romania, a former communist country, with a Christian Orthodox tradition, provides ground for a sociological study of the religious evolution in Eastern Europe. In order to define the type of religious modernity that has been built in Romania following 1989, we have considered the level of Romania's religious pluralisme, by studying the presence of the new religious movements. This thesis is structured in three parts, accordingly : 1) the genesis of the religious field in Romania ; 2) the dynamics of the religious life following 1989 ; 3) the effects of the religious pluralism. As a result of our study, we have come to be the conclusion that a modernity based on the free market criteria is being constructed in Romania. However, at the same time, there is also a conflict between the market logic and the monopolistic logic, which generates a solw evolution and a relative and unusual secularization
