Borzyh, Stanislav. Pananthropea. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1218149.

Streszczenie:
The monograph is dedicated to the supercontinent Pananthropea, which was created by the efforts of people, and therefore is named in his honor. It consists of all purely geographical continents, as well as all land areas, representing a single organism that functions exactly as a whole, but at the same time divided by nature itself. The relevance of this approach is shown as follows, as described in the three chapters of the text. First, it demonstrates the physical connectivity of all regions of our planet with each other, which is expressed in a change in the logic of the topology, today planted and controlled by man. Secondly, the presence of this huge and unbroken array is evidenced by the biological component of the world economy, which we have also transformed to suit our needs, thereby redrawing the natural course of affairs in this area and turning it into a global one. Third, the same is true of the cultural domain of our life, which at some point became universal, which again was achieved for the sake of our goals and interests, as a result of which we are all now members of a single interconnected association. It is of interest to both specialists and a wide audience and will be useful for us to understand both ourselves and the reality that we have constructed.

The monograph examines the diversity and convergent similarity of adaptations to typical habitat conditions of the main representatives of social insects: termites, ants, paper wasps, bumblebees and bees. Trophic connections, methods of nest construction and protection, intra- and interspecific relations, forms of manifestation and origin of social relations are considered. The species-specific mechanisms of spatial orientation and communication, the role of programmed and modifiable behavior in the life of families of social insects are analyzed. The phylogenetic ways in which the transformation of families of eusocial insects into integral biological units, individually subject to the action of natural selection — the main driving factor of evolution - took place are discussed. For students, postgraduates and teachers of biological universities and faculties, as well as a wide range of readers interested in the issues of evolution.

Streszczenie:
This article examines generality in biology by focusing on two French schools of anatomy: the discipline of anatomie générale that was founded in France in 1800 by Xavier Bichat and the one developed in the 1870s by Louis Ranvier at the Collège de France by means of microscopy. The works of Bichat and Ranvier involved the disciplines of anatomy and physiology. Bichat’s work, especially his research on tissues, is of interest for understanding which kind of concept of generality gained favor in the life sciences at the start of the nineteenth century. Ranvier’s later career sheds light on the ways that generality was searched for at the microscopic level and its significance in the discovery of real and minute biological objects. Following a discussion of Bichat and Ranvier’s anatomie générale, this article explores the two men’s interests in generality as an actor’s category.

Streszczenie:
The technique of small angle solution scattering has been revolutionized in the last two decades. Exponential increases in computing power, parallel algorithm development, and the development of synchrotron, free-electron X-ray sources, and neutron sources, have combined to allow new classes of studies for biological specimens. These include time-resolved experiments in which functional motions of proteins are monitored on a picosecond timescale, and the first steps towards determining actual electron density fluctuations within particles. In addition, more traditional experiments involving the determination of size and shape, and contrast matching that isolate substructures such as nucleic acid, have become much more straightforward to carry out, and simultaneously require much less material. These new capabilities have sparked an upsurge of interest in solution scattering on the part of investigators in related disciplines. Thus, this book seeks to guide structural biologists to understand the basics of small angle solution scattering in both the X-ray and neutron case, to appreciate its strengths, and to be cognizant of its limitations. It is also directed at those who have a general interest in its potential. The book focuses on three areas: theory, practical aspects and applications, and the potential of developing areas. It is an introduction and guide to the field but not a comprehensive treatment of all the potential applications.

Streszczenie:
In some applications of agential thinking in evolutionary biology, genes and groups, rather than individuals, are the entities that are treated as agents with goals. The genes-as-agents concept is applicable only in cases of intra-genomic conflict, where it helps to make sense of the phenotypic consequences of such conflict. The groups-as-agents concept is applicable only when groups are adapted units, and where within-group conflict is either absent or suppressed; for otherwise the unity-of-purpose constraint on agency will not be satisfied. The idea of group agency has also arisen in social science, where the discussion closely parallels the biological discussion. In both cases, the critical issue is how individuals’ interests can be aligned with that of their group. One such alignment mechanism is the veil-of-ignorance, which deprives individuals of the information needed to pursue their self-interest at the group’s expense.

Streszczenie:
A political economy of food is, somewhat ironically, especially dependent on politics of ideas. Food as commodity certainly exhibits familiar forces of contention in political economy—the relative weights of interests contesting boundaries between state and market—but generates a distinctive politics for interrelated reasons. First, the urgency of food provisioning reflects biological necessity, not mere preference. Consequently, production and distribution animate a politics of security, rights, and social justice, and thereby special potential for collective action and contentious politics. Second, food engages deeply held cultural norms and ethical standards that transcend the politics of interest characteristic of less charged commodities. Finally, a looming sense of crisis and uncertainty in sustainability of global food production has made technical discourses dependent on expertise and science more indispensable but simultaneously more contentious—and transnational in scope. Expertise looms ever larger but has not depoliticized the production, consumption, and distribution of food.

Streszczenie:
A crucial question for a process view of life is how to identify a process and how to follow it through time. The genidentity view (first proposed by Kurt Lewin and later elaborated by Hans Reichenbach) can contribute decisively to this project. It says that the identity through time of an entity X is given by a well-identified series of continuous states of affairs. Genidentity helps address the problem of diachronic identity in the living world. This chapter describes the centrality of the concept of genidentity for David Hull and proposes an extension of Hull’s view to the ubiquitous phenomenon of symbiosis. Finally, using immunology as a key example, it shows that the genidentity view suggests that the main interest of a process approach is epistemological rather than ontological and that its principal claim is one of priority, namely that processes precede and define things, and not vice versa.

Ascertaining an individual’s history of alcohol consumption is an important component in the proper treatment of accidental trauma or acute or chronic illness, as well as for matters of public health and safety, legal issues, insurance coverage, and the management of and recovery from hazardous/harmful levels of alcohol consumption. Although self-report of alcohol consumption in both research and clinical settings represents the most common mode of assessment, there is long-standing interest in developing objective measures of alcohol consumption that do not rely on the ability or willingness of a person to truthfully report consumption. Biologic diagnostic tests or biomarkers can provide information on current and past quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption. This chapter discusses and evaluates many of the biomarker candidates that have been investigated and provides insights into future searches for optimal diagnostic tools to provide biologic evidence of duration, quantity, and frequency of individual alcohol consumption. We have included a limited discussion of biomarkers for assessing cannabis use since cannabis and alcohol use many times are a concomitant feature of intoxication.
