Streszczenie:
The eleventh and twelfth centuries represent a critical formative period for institutions and practices that characterized later Islam. Sufism also emerged during the same period as a distinct mode of piety that gained widespread acceptance in the aftermath of Mongol invasions in the thirteenth century. Using early Sufi biographies produced in Khorasan during that period, this study will argue that the early Sufis were not only preoccupied with locating their own tradition within the Islamic orthodoxy but also defining the contours of what constituted acceptable Islam. The sources used are predominantly Persian Sufi biographies composed in Khorasan which form the main body of historiography of Sufism.

Macdonald, Stephen James. "Hidden biographies : dyslexia, disability and social class". Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1799.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this thesis is to establish a sociological understanding of dyslexia within adulthood. The research explores the effects dyslexia has on the life course of individuals within an educational and employment context. The thesis commences by examining both the historical and the contemporary medical and educational literature on dyslexia. This is in order to develop a general understanding from existing research of dyslexia as a label. A feature of this study is that it draws from literature within disability studies rather than employing the psycho-educational approach that dominates contemporary research. The study has placed dyslexia within the field of disability studies in an attempt to understand how this syndrome can be interpreted through the concept of disabling barriers, and has developed a critical realist perspective to broaden this understanding. As a result, the research has further developed the debate in relation to the medical and social model ideologies which are represented within disability studies. This approach has enabled a contribution to be made to current debates surrounding definitions of dyslexia within disability studies. In order to explore dyslexia within the field of disability studies, as well as include the voices of dyslexic adults, the thesis employs a biographical narrative approach. This study primarily used a quantitative questionnaire method to locate dyslexic participants within four distinct populations, chosen through a theoretical sampling frame. However, the majority of the data was collected by using a qualitative biographical approach, which explored the experiences of 13 dyslexic participants selected via analysis of the quantitative data. These participants were selected according to a number of social variables including socio-economic positioning, age and gender to maximise a diverse range of experiences and approaches to living with dyslexia. The study discovered that disabling barriers were intensified by an individual's socio-economic status. By using a social class analysis, the research illustrates how dyslexia and social class affect both educational and employment possibilities within the participant's life course. The thesis concludes by discussing the importance of identifying and supporting people with dyslexia within education and employment. By acknowledging that dyslexia is affected by issues of socio-economic status, the research has broadened the debate in relation to labelling individuals within education. The study has developed a pro-labelling approach based on evidence from the social and educational perspectives in order to represent the voices of participants within this study. However, the research findings do not suggest that dyslexia is a social construct, but rather, the experience of dyslexia is produced through an interaction between the social and the biological embodied self. As a result of developing this pro-labelling approach, the research illustrates how socio-economic positioning, combined with issues related to dyslexia, restricts access to education and employment provisions. This develops into a discussion on how dyslexia is not just an educational issue but also has major ramifications within adult life. In order to overcome the negative aspects of dyslexia, the study suggests that by using a disability rights perspective the dyslexic community can positively transform social attitudes as well as enhance the status of a dyslexic identity. This will allow individuals access to vital technological support as well as allowing them to confront disabling barriers within society.

Streszczenie:
Magister Artium - MA (History)
Nokuthula Simelane, born near Bethal in Mpumalanga, joined the ANC's armed-wing uMKhonto we Sizwe (MK) as a courier while studying at the University of Swaziland in the early 1980s. In 1983 she set out on a mission to South Africa on the pretext of purchasing clothing for her up-coming graduation. Simelane was however abducted, and has since not been heard from nor has her body been found. Her disappearance was one of those examined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of South Africa. These are some facts about Simelane. This thesis seeks to explore how Simelane's biographies manifest themselves across multiple genres and in so doing determine their similarities and differences, with a view to understanding the difficulties of producing the biography of a missing person. The genres of biography I examine relation to Simelane are: the TRC's Amnesty Committee (AC) hearings, the Human Rights Violations Committee (HRVC) hearing, their transcripts and the TRC reports; a documentary film called Betrayal directed by Mark Kaplan; and a statue of Simelane located in Bethal sculpted by Ruhan Janse van Vuuren.

Streszczenie:
This thesis explores how individuals and households experience the places in which they live and examines the potential impact of those places on outcomes across a range of life careers. Residential neighbourhoods have been variously framed as sites of personal expression or alternatively as locations of multiple deprivation that limit the life chances of the local population. This thesis however, argues that the limited framework within which existing studies of housing and residential choice are developed provides only a partial account of the complex and multidimensional nature of the relationship people have with the places in which they live. It addresses this gap by drawing on a wide range of theoretical ideas and by moving away from the deficit model of housing that dominates much academic work. In doing so it opens up the subject to scrutiny from a variety of perspectives and lays bare the varied and competing influences on decisions about housing. Use of quantitative information in the form of detailed housing biographies addresses a gap in existing knowledge by placing housing decisions in the context of past experience and other life careers. The introduction of qualitative techniques to a discipline dominated to date by large scale surveys supplements this evidence with the rich, nuanced data of personal experience. Three key elements of housing practices are identified, demonstrating the extent to which they are inextricably interconnected with a range of other life careers. Despite the recent ascendency within geography of a relational sense of place at the expense of the territorial, both are seen to be important. Savage et al’s (2005) concept of elective belonging is clearly identified as residents construct a narrative of fit between self and neighbourhood. Multiple strategies of social distinction are observed, each of which serves to transform the house and the neighbourhood into a home. Secondly notions of community remain an essential element of residents’ sense of belonging to their neighbourhood. The research reveals highly focussed personal networks that serve to produce and sustain location specific capital. An un-reflexive immobility is the result, where settled households perceive little need to consider residential alternatives. Finally, the physical and social infrastructure provided by the neighbourhood is identified as an important means of mediating the demands of home, work and childrearing. As such women, as primary care-givers, show greater investment than male partners in the ‘right’ residential choice. The thesis reveals liveable place to be complex and multifaceted, difficult to reduce to a simple economic or social variable. Whilst there are constant characteristics which appeal across the social scale, it highlights divergent experiences according to class, gender and life course stage. Choices and outcomes are embedded in social structures so that the research demonstrates the on-going impact of liveable place in the accumulation of social, cultural and economic capital to those who live there. Whilst liveable place is seen to mean different things according to class, gender and age, those trapped in neighbourhoods they do not consider liveable are potentially excluded from this accumulation.

Streszczenie:
Ken Russell (1927-2011) was a renegade talent and the self-styled enfant terrible of British cinema. His legacy as a film-maker consists of a large number of films on the lives of artists, mainly composers. But Russell’s approach to artist biography was highly unorthodox: rather than reconstruct a factual account he offered a deeply personal interpretation of artists’ lives based on his own understanding of their work. In a programmatic text for his film on Mahler (1974), Russell explained that his films ‘evolve through a stream of consciousness in which the man and the myth, the music and its meaning, time, place, dream and fact all flow and blend into the mainstream of the film itself’ and that ‘my film is simply about some of the things I feel when I think of Mahler’s life and listen to his music’.This book is an attempt to explain what that statement means and to unpack its implications for the practice of life writing. It takes a baroque approach to performance and performativity to show how Russell not simply made highly inventive films on other artists, but also constructed those films as a kind of self-portrait. Russell’s work then becomes a performance of self through art. In four chapters of detailed analysis this book reconstructs Russell’s method, from the very first films he made for the BBC in the early 1960s through his major feature films of the 1970s and 1980s.

Waters, Bernadette. "Unknown stories : biographies of adults with primary lymphoedema". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2009. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/336241/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Lymphoedema is a chronic, debilitating and disfiguring medical condition caused by lymphatic insufficiency. This insufficiency may be characterised as primary, when there is congenital or hereditary cause; or secondary, when the cause is related to trauma or illness. It can lead to extreme swelling, most usually in the limbs, and creates increased susceptibility to recurrent, and sometimes life-threatening, infection. Physical, psychological and social effects of the condition can have a significant impact on an individual’s life and their levels of participation. Lymphoedema has attracted a very small amount of research activity by comparison to other chronic conditions and almost all research has focused on the views of medical experts and relates to their management of the condition. What qualitative research that exists concerning the experience of living with lymphoedema has focused primarily on women who survive breast cancer. The voice of individuals with primary lymphoedema has not been heard. This study investigated the life stories of eight people using an auto/biographical approach to illuminate their experiences of living with advanced and complicated primary lymphoedema. The specific aims of the study were to: record the stories of those who live with primary lymphoedema in order to better understand their lived experience; analyse those stories in the context of what is known about the condition and reflect on the management of lymphoedema; draw conclusions and make recommendations that might make a useful contribution to the lives of those who experience lymphoedema. Each person took part in an interview with the researcher in which they were invited to talk about their lives. These interviews were transcribed and then reviewed by the participants. Narrative and biographical analysis was employed to explore the meaning in the data. Findings reveal the extensive impact that primary lymphoedema has on individual lives depriving participants of relationships, employment, leisure and self esteem. Although each person provided a unique and individual point of view of their life, there were certain common themes that emerged. Participants spoke of their difficulty in finding a correct diagnosis and access to effective treatment; the importance of information and education and the challenges of daily self management. Finally, recommendations are made to increase lymphoedema awareness amongst providers of healthcare and those who commission it; promote intensive and community-based treatment programmes; teach and monitor effective self-management techniques.

Roundhouses are ubiquitous in prehistoric Britain, yet previous studies of these iconic features have tended to overlook their human occupants, focusing instead on their external morphology and structural engineering. Those studies which have attempted to move beyond functionalist frameworks, have often applied overarching and broad-scale cosmological models which, though re-orientating study towards social considerations, have likewise failed to shed light on the interaction between roundhouse and their inhabitants, particularly at a household level. This research reanalyses the Late Iron Age settlement at Broxmouth, East Lothian, using new theoretical approaches and advances in AMS dating to ask new questions of a 30 year old data-set. Biographical and materiality approaches, which draw heavily on relational analogy with the ethnographic record, have allowed for detailed reconstruction of the life-history of each structure, and important moments within these histories. Roundhouse replacement appears to have taken place on a roughly generational basis, as a means by which households renegotiated their social identities within the community. Structured deposition, and the materiality of the roundhouse fabric itself, appears to have played an important role in the communication of identity, where the retention of previous structural fabric, the deposition of curated items, and the referencing of former internal features, created physical and symbolic links with the past, and with the ancestors. As such, this study demonstrates that roundhouses were far more than mere dwellings, and were integral to the ways in which past societies rationalised the world around them.

Antoniou, Antonis. "Aural auras and haunting echoes : places with complex biographies". Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2016. http://research.gold.ac.uk/19426/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The aim of the thesis is to explore the distinct identities of places with complex biographies. In particular, it investigates the processes through which sound can enact dialogues between places and people, thus exposing these identities. Place, and more specifically the history of place, is understood as a field that is involved in a process of continuous negotiation and performance. Throughout the thesis, it is contended that the identities of "charged places" can be experienced similarly to how we experience ambience or background noise. Through the ostensible silence that characterises the places under study – a silence not necessarily acoustic, but rather one that relates to the absence of what was or what should have been there – a noisy narrative may develop in our mental realm. Imagination and daydream is the ultimate condition for creating what Gaston Bachelard (1958) terms the "poetic image", which will enable us to "listen" to the place through its histories and to delve into its "aural aura". The specific topic of investigation is how a sound artist, following a place-specific trajectory, may foster a meaningful conversation between the audience and the place, thus exposing the place's biographical essences, and furthermore how they may "orchestrate" an aural aura in order to establish this communication. The four works presented in the portfolio constitute a practical approach through which a response is given to the above inquiries. Each of the four works addresses fields that involve socio-political, philosophical, cultural and aesthetic concerns relevant to the island of Cyprus, as well as more practical artistic matters, such as interactivity, collaboration and ephemerality. The thesis concludes that place-specific sound art with a guerrilla-art style, can be an effective way of expressing and communicating nuances and concepts that relate to the biography of places.

Ahjum, Gadija. "Islamist Biographies: Religious Experiences of South African Muslim Activists". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/24804.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis explores the biographies of Muslim activists who were involved in the South African Islamist movement from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s - tracking their trajectories up till the present. These Islamist biographies can be likened to journeys which include moments of fulfilment, doubt, ambivalence and a grappling to make sense of the self and society. A close examination of Islamist journeys reveal accounts of conversion, a deep commitment to religion and the reconstruction of both public and private identities. Conversion signalled both an arrival – at a new meaning system – and a departure – on a journey informed by this new meaning system. For Islamists, their renewed understanding of religion provided purpose, perseverance and direction. They turned to Islamism to reconstruct their public identities by becoming part of a chosen collective. Simultaneously, they also used religious ideology to reconstruct their identities within the private sphere. This study places emphasis on the everyday lives of Islamists. By suggesting that South African Islamism can best be viewed as the sum of a multitude of journeys of everyday political Islam, this study recognizes that such a life is located within a particular idealized world-view. However, interrogating this life trajectory necessitates an in-depth approach which takes heed of Islamists’ perfectionist ideals while remaining cognizant of personal realities. In doing so, this study reveals not only their firm resolve to be ‘good’ Islamists, but also their aspirations to be ‘good’ women within their personal domains. I thus contend that, included in an investigation on Islamist journeys, should be the ambiguities and personal challenges they encountered in private spaces. This study aligns itself with others who have challenged notions of a monolithic Islamism; rather Islamism has proven itself to continuously transform – even within local contexts like South Africa. Moreover, this thesis addresses a lacuna in scholarship on Islamism and highlights key perceptions that Islamists have about themselves, an idealized worldview and the challenges in everyday life. In this way, this study offers an alternate line of enquiry into religious activism as a lived experience. Doing so leads to a better understanding of not just individuals’ ideals and objectives, but also the everyday consequences this had.

Campana's Life and Work form the two main sections of my thesis. In the first part, I reconstruct the chronology of Campana's life against the background of his times. There were, hitherto, considerable periods in the poet's life which were either unknown, or reconstructed through hearsay in the absence of original documentation. In the course of my research both in Italy (Marradi, Florence, Bologna, Rome), and Switzerland (Lugano), I was able to discover many unpublished documents, some of which fill in gaps, others which challenge the previously accepted chronology. Some of these documents I have published in two articles (The Modern Language Review, October 1983, and Italian Studies,1985) which I am attaching to this thesis; others I have transcribed in an Appendix. In the study of Campana's work, I examine successive publications of his poems and compare them with some original manuscripts, now in the hands of relatives or in archives and libraries in Italy. I discuss the phenomenon of Variants and other aspects of Campana's method of work which contributed to the many disparities found in successive publications. A comparative table of Il Piu Lungo Giorno and the Canti Orfici is a major part of this thesis. Il Piu Lungo Giorno, lost in 1913 and not found until 1971 has hitherto been surprisingly neglected, although it enables us to trace Campana's poetic development over a crucial phase of his career. I have limited my study of the Canti Orfici to two poems which help to distinguish the various phases of Campana's development and show the emergence of ideas which appear characteristic of his mature art. In conclusion I look at changing attitudes to Campana, from 1914 to the present day.

Streszczenie:
Sir James Pennethorne (1801-1871) was the architectural heir of John Nash, in whose office he received much of his early training. From 1839 until 1870 he worked almost exclusively for the government: devising and carrying out major street improvement schemes in central London; designing and laying out the first metropolitan parks intended primarily for the use of the poor; acting as architecural surveyor to the Crown Estate in London; advising successive governments on schemes for new public buildings in the capital; and designing some of the most important of those buildings himself. He was one of the leading architects and urban planners of the mid 19th century, and a study of his career fills a major gap in the history of London, and the archtectural history of19th-century England. A first chapter traces Pennethorne's early career, examining his training, his role in the Nash office, and his first independently commissioned buildings. An assessment of his contribution to the planning of London follows, concentrating first on street improvements, then on the Crown Estate, and finally on parks. Pennethorne's main activities in these areas were concentrated in the 1840s and early 1850s. In 1844 he began his involvement in the planning and design of government buildings, and from the 1850s until his retirement the interest of his career is mainly architectural. A chapter traces hisdealings with the Office of Works, through which department government buildings were conceived and carried out. The buildings themselves are then considered by type: government offices, museums, royal residences, and a miscellaneous group which includes the Public Record Office and the first purpose-built headquarters of the University of London. A final chapter provides an assessment of Pennethorne's achievements and of his place in the history of English architecture.

McColl, Julie Anne. "Imagining the missionary hero : juvenile missionary biographies, c.1870-1917". Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2017. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3022429/.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the fascinating and complex body of work surrounding the missionary hero as a product of late imperial ideas of the heroic produced in the form of biography. It will concentrate upon how the literature was appropriated, reproduced and disseminated via the Sunday school network to working-class children between 1870 and 1917. It will discuss how biographers through imaginative narrative strategies and the reframing of the biography as an adventure story, were able to offer children a physical exemplar and self-sacrificial hero who dispensed clear imperial ideas and moral values. This thesis will reflect upon how the narratives embedded in dominant discourses provided working-class children with imperial ideologies including ideas of citizenship and self-help which it will argue allowed groups of Sunday school readers to feel part of an imagined community. In doing so, the thesis sheds important new light on a central point of contention in the considerable and often heated discussion that has developed since the 1980s around the impact of empire on British people. Through an analysis of common themes it will also consider the depiction of women missionaries, asking whether biographical representation challenged or reinforced traditional gender ideologies. To interrogate these components effectively this thesis is divided into two parts, Part One is divided into five chapters providing context, while Part Two will look in detail at the repetition and adaption of common themes. The first chapter will outline concerns surrounding working-class children and analyse the solutions suggested to provide children with ideas based upon self-improvement, character building and patriotism. Chapter 2 examines the use of the missionary biography in the Sunday school while ideas surrounding the hero and hero-worship and literature incorporating British heroes will be studied in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 analyses the missionary biography and will discuss why the missionary, both male and female, was deemed an ideal candidate to provide examples of self-help and self-improvement. This chapter will conclude with a section introducing missionaries James Hannington and Mary Slessor. Chapters 5 will focus on the role of the publishers, biographers and illustrators. This will lead to Part Two of this thesis which comprises of four chapters investigating common features, motifs and codes within the biographies which highlight how children were inculcated in ideas of patriotism, gender and British superiority all inextricably linked to ideas of community. In conclusion, I consider how far and in what ways the thesis has advanced understanding of missionary biographies in this period, while sketching out some possibilities for further research.

Norton, Elizabeth Jane. "Polished axes : object biographies and the writing of world prehistories". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2016. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/407539/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Polished axes have become an iconic tool representing the Neolithic in the archaeological record. Polished axes are unusual as they are similar in form and design across space and time, found internationally in both archaeological and ethnographic contexts. This meant they have become an easily recognisable item for collectors and have been found in public and private collections from the 18th Century onwards. A common component in many diverse collections, tracing the history of polished axes allows the investigation of the networks of people and artefacts which built the collections of the British Museum. These networks were also crucial in the sharing of information, which especially in the mid – 19th Century may have had a significant impact in the way in which world prehistories were written. The research has focused on the British Museum’s collection of polished axes from Oceania, and Europe. Objects associated with the axes, including hafts, labels, diaries, letters and catalogues have been used to reconstruct the ‘biography’ of each collection of artefacts. This makes it possible to show how the British Museum’s collections of polished axes were built and how they have been used to write the prehistory of the world from a Western perspective. There are three main aims to my research. Firstly I aim to better understand how the British Museum acted as a site of knowledge making during the construction of prehistory as a concept and the construction of archaeology as a discipline. Secondly, I aim to show how ethnographic and archaeological artefacts have been used together, both inside and outside the British Museum, to write world prehistories. Finally, I will show how polished axes have been used to write world prehistories which have influenced archaeologists for generations and to show object biographies may inform world prehistories in the future.

Streszczenie:
This thesis explores the development of the Harewood Estate during the eighteenth century. The work focuses around the three themes of scale, multivocality and biography to provide a new perspective on post-medieval estate landscapes. A biographical approach is used to conciliate different scales of analysis and give meaning to the local, fleeting lives of the estate’s inhabitants. It is argued that at the local scale we find evidence that helps to challenge the taken-for-granted stories of historical archaeology. A detailed account of the Harewood Estate is presented in order to contextualise the landscape developments, led by Edwin Lascelles, 1st Baron Harewood (1712-1795) from 1755. It is situated within the broader context of eighteenth-century ‘improvement’, a pervasive process that influenced many aspects of the Harewood landscape. By using a range of sources including, archaeological and documentary evidence, it is possible to gauge the impact of both the landowning family and the broader influences on the local scale. Surveys of a range of buildings such as workshops, farms and houses, show how eighteenth-century improvement had a variable impact at the local scale. The ‘biographies of people and place’ have been used to introduce multivocality, or new ‘voices’, into the interpretation. By articulating several perspectives of the same landscape and recognising how people play a significant part in its formation - how they interact and are shaped by it - this thesis acknowledges the ways people inhabit their surrounding environment and furthers our understanding of post-medieval estates.

Streszczenie:
This thesis presents a comparative study of two modern Muslim biographers of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad Husayn Haykal and Sayyid Ja$ rm sp{c}$far Murtada, the one a Sunni the other a Shispc$ = i. In dealing with their works on the { it s = i ra}, the intention is to focus on some aspects of the life of the Prophet of Islam from the time when he resided in Makka. After outlining the authors' scholarly backgrounds, sources, methods, and purposes, etc., the thesis deals with certain specific issues concerning the Prophet's birth, his nursing and the reason behind the custom of having foster-mothers, the controversial stories of the splitting of his chest and of his participation in the sacrilegious war, his state both before and after the announcement to him of his Mission, the authors' interpretations of his night journey and ascent to heaven and lastly their discussion about the Prophet and miracles. This research should not be considered as historical in nature; rather, it aims at clarifying the similarities and differences which may be discovered between our two biographers, and at comparing their respective Sunn = i and Sh = i$spc$ = i approaches.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines accounts of the life of Ras-chung-pa, also known as rDo- rje Grags-pa (1084-1161), written from the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries. It identifies what sources are presently available and discusses their inter-relationship. The thesis will present a development of narrative traditions that fuse and eventually climax in the sixteenth century Ras-chung-pa'i rNam-thar by rGod-tshang Ras-pa, which is the standard biography for present-day Tibetan Buddhism. This thesis will reveal how rGod-tshang Ras-pa's version of the first half of Ras-chung- pa's life is a late composite of various conflicting narratives. As the primary source materials have been little studied or even identified, a major part of the thesis will be an exploration and identification of the sources. The thesis will both show how narratives about Ras-chung-pa evolved and suggest their possible historical sources.
