Physiol. 83(1): 172–178, 1997.—The effectiveness of dobutamine (Dob) in preventing bone loss during 14 days of hindlimb suspension (Sus) was tested in exercise-trained (Ex; n = 25) and sedentary (Sed; n = 22) rats (age 155 days). One-half of each group was given Dob (2 mg ⋅ kg−1 ⋅ day−1) or saline (Sal). Histomorphometric measurements at midfemur revealed a 17% smaller cortical bone area (CBA) and a 32% lower periosteal mineral apposition rate (MAR) in suspended vs. nonsuspended Sed/Sal rats. Dob abolished this decline in CBA in Sed/Sus rats, probably via an attenuation of the decrease in periosteal MAR; similar but nonsignificant effects on cross-sectional moment of inertia were observed. Nonsuspended Ex rats had no change in bone CBA when CBA is indexed to body weight. Sus appeared to uncouple the relationship between soleus weight and CBA. Dob attenuated the 43% decline in soleus weight after Sus in Ex but not in Sed rats. In summary, vigorous Ex before Sus does not affect loss of bone mass due to unloading; Dob effectively maintains CBA in Sed rats subjected to suspension.

Abstract Metabolic reprogramming plays a crucial role in the maintenance and differentiation of various cancers, including multiple myeloma (MM), the second-most common incurable hematological malignancy. Drug resistance poses a significant challenge to conventional proteasome inhibitor (PI) based therapy. A body of literature suggests that several metabolites are significantly deregulated in MM patients, however, their role in driving resistance is unclear. This study aims to identify metabolites modulated during acquired resistance to proteasome inhibitors in relapsed refractory (RR)MM. Two clinically relevant cell line models of PI-resistance (PIR) were developed by dose-escalation of the PI over one year. Cell cytotoxicity assays, immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, and flow cytometric analyses were used to assess the resistance phenotype. Mass spectrometry-based metabolomic profiling was performed to identify altered metabolites in resistant as compared to sensitive cell lines. PIR cells demonstrated pan-resistance to multiple PIs, including a >10-fold increase in IC50 for oprozomib compared to parental cells. PIR cells had higher bioenergetic and glycolytic activity (Seahorse) while gene expression profiling suggested downregulation of oxidative phosphorylation. Mass spectrometry-based metabolomic profiling identified distinct metabolites deregulated in drug-resistant cells. The metabolomic profiles of the drug-resistant cell lines showed that the lipid synthesis and beta-oxidation of fatty acid pathways were highly modulated. Several pathway components demonstrated a negative association with overall survival in multiple myeloma patient datasets (MMRF, GSE31161 & GSE9782). PI resistance led to increased phosphorylation of ACLY involved in fatty acid synthesis and increased expression of CPT1A indicative of activation of the beta-oxidation pathway. Use of ACLY and FASN tool compounds affected proliferation, survival, and response to treatment in PIR cells. Metabolites modulated during acquired resistance to proteasome inhibitor in relapsed refractory (RR)MM were identified and potential mechanisms driving resistance were studied. This article focuses on the Mission of the Passionist as a Tool of Catechesis (Beverly Thought Catechesis Overview). I am interested and have anxieties discussing articles about the mission of the Passionists as a means of catechesis for the faith of Catholics in West Kalimantan for several reasons. First, Catholics in the interior need a refreshing faith. Second, through the mission of the Passionists, the people are invited to be closer to the crucified Christ and at the same time live the suffering of Jesus. Third, the people need enlightenment of faith on the part of the Church as a hierarchy. Finally, through this article I would like to introduce you to the spirituality and charism of the Passionist Congregation today. The method I use in writing this article is through personal interviews and literature. After going through interviews and obtaining data through literature then analyzed and combined. Thus, the results from the field and the results from the literature found a suitable thought between Beverly's thinking and the implementation of the Mission of the Passionists. The results of the ideas of Beverly and the Mission of the Passionists are a means of evaluating and seeing this mission in a comprehensive and holistic manner. Therefore, passionist spirituality continually renews itself with knowledge, research, and research on a mission or mission. The mission of the Passionists is to be a fine axis and torch in the witness of the proclamation of the mission of the Church in the world. This mission does not stop at the completion of the program but continues and is lived out by the faithful.

Artikel ini memiliki fokus pada Misi Umat Pasionis sebagai Sarana Katekese (Tinjauan Katekese Pemikiran Beverly). Saya tertarik dan memiliki kegelisahan membahas artikel tentang misi umat pasionis sebagai sarana katekese iman umat Katolik di Kalimantan barat karena beberapa alasan. Pertama, umat Katolik di pedalaman membutuhkan penyegaran iman. Kedua, melalui misi Umat Pasionis ini umat diajak untuk semakin dekat dengan Kristus tersalib sekaligus menghayati penderitaan Yesus. Ketiga, umat membutuhkan pencerahan iman dari pihak Gereja sebagai hirarki. Terakhir bahwa melalui artikel ini saya hendak mengenalkan spiritualitas dan kharisma Kongregasi Pasionis di masa sekarang ini. Metode yang penulis gunakan dalam penulisan artikel ini ialah melalui wawancara personal dan kepustakaan. Setelah melalui wawancara dan memperoleh data melalui kepustakaan kemudian dianalisis dan dikombinasikan. Dengan demikian hasil dari lapangan dan hasil dari kepustakaan ditemukan suatu pemikiran yang sesuai antara pemikiran Beverly dan pelaksanaan Misi Umat Pasionis. Hasil dari cetusan pemikiran Beverly dan Misi Umat Pasionis menjadi sarana untuk evaluasi dan melihat misi ini secara komprehensif dan holistik. Maka dari itu, spiritualitas pasionis terus menerus membaharui diri dengan ilmu, peneletian, riset yang mumpuni tentang suatu pewartaan atau misi. Misi Umat Pasionis menjadi sumbu dan obor yang baik dalam kesaksian pewartaan misi Gereja di dunia. Misi ini tidak berhenti pada selesainya acara melainkan terus berlangsung dan dihidupi umat beriman.

Abstract Non-Hispanic black (NHB) women are more likely to be diagnosed and die from triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) than non-Hispanic white (NHW) women. We previously showed that TNBC tissues display a distinct microbial signature. Obesity which contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation and gut microbial dysbiosis further exacerbates TNBC outcomes for NHB women. However, it is unclear the extent to which microbial differences in breast tumor tissues may be driven by alterations in microbial metabolites as a result of obesity status. Therefore, the aim of this global metabolomic profiling study was to investigate alterations in microbial metabolism pathways in breast tissues of NHB and NHW obese women (avg. BMI = 35.7) relative to non-obese women (avg. BMI = 23.4) with and without TNBC. In this study, we analyzed 984 metabolites derived from a total of 51 NHB and NHW women, including 15 patients with TNBC, 12 patients with less aggressive Luminal A-type breast cancer, and 24 healthy controls for comparison using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) to identify microbial metabolites and metabolomic signatures that differ by breast tumor subtype and obesity status. We detected 501 significantly increased metabolites and 33 significantly decreased metabolites in TNBC patients compared to controls. Principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering of the global metabolite profiling data revealed separation between the metabolic signatures of normal and breast tumor tissue. Random forest analysis revealed a unique biochemical signature associated with elevated L-Tryptophan (Trp) and Kynurenine (Kyn) metabolites and lower levels of microbial-derived metabolites critical for controlling inflammation and immune response in obese individuals and those with TNBC. TCGA analysis further revealed that expression of key Trp enzymes was significantly associated with worse survival outcomes in TNBC patients compared to other breast tumor subtypes. Our findings highlight a potential role for Trp metabolism through the Kyn pathway in obesity and TNBC risk. Further investigations into the Kyn metabolomic pathway may prove to be a novel therapeutic target for TNBC. Hox genes encode for homeodomain transcription factors well known to be involved in developmental control after gastrulation. However, the expression of some of these genes has been detected during oocyte maturation and early embryo development. An interesting expression profile has been obtained for HOXB9 in the bovine (Paul et al. 2011 Mol. Reprod. Dev. 78, 436): its relative expression increases between the immature oocyte and the zygote, further increases at the 5- to 8-cell stage to peak at the morula stage before decreasing at the blastocyst stage. The main objective of this work is to establish the HOXB9 protein profile from the immature oocyte to the blastocyst in the bovine. Bovine embryos were produced in vitro from immature oocytes obtained from slaughterhouse ovaries. Embryos were collected at the following stages: immature oocyte, mature oocyte, zygote (18 h post-insemination, hpi), 2-cell (26 hpi), 5 to 8 cell (48 hpi), 9 to 16 cell (96 hpi), morula (120 hpi), and blastocyst (180 hpi). The presence and distribution of HOXB9 proteins were detected by whole-mount immunofluorescence followed by confocal microscopy using an anti-human HOXB9 polyclonal antibody directed against a sequence showing 100% homology with the bovine protein. Its specificity to the bovine protein was controlled by Western blot on total protein extract from the bovine uterus and revealed, among a few bands of weak intensities, 2 bands of high intensity corresponding to the expected size. Oocytes or embryos were fixed and incubated overnight with rabbit anti-HOXB9 (Sigma, St. Louis, MO, USA) and mouse anti-E-cadherin (BD Biosciences, Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA) primary antibodies and then for 1 h with goat anti-rabbit Alexafluor 555 conjugated (Cell Signaling Technology, Beverly, MA, USA) and goat anti-mouse FITC-conjugated (Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc., Santa Cruz, CA, USA) secondary antibodies. Embryos were then mounted in Vectashield containing DAPI. HOXB9 is detected from the immature oocyte to the blastocyst stage. At the immature oocyte stage, it is mainly localised in the germinal vesicle with a weak signal in the cytoplasm. At the mature oocyte stage, HOXB9 labelling is present in the cytoplasm. At the zygote stage, a stronger immunoreactivity is observed in the pronuclei than in the cytoplasm. From the 2-cell stage to the morula stage, the presence of HOXB9 is also more important in the nuclei than in the cytoplasm. HOXB9 is also observed at the blastocyst stage where it is localised in the nuclei of the trophectoderm cells, whereas an inconstant or weaker labelling is observed in the inner cell mass cells. In conclusion, we have shown for the first time the presence of the HOXB9 protein throughout early bovine embryo development. The results obtained suggest the presence of the maternal HOXB9 protein because it is already detected before the maternal to embryonic transition that occurs during the fourth cell cycle in the bovine. Finally, the pattern obtained at the blastocyst stage suggests a differential role of HOXB9 in the inner cell mass and trophectoderm cells. C. The objective of this study was to determine if zona pellucida (ZP) opening before cryopreservation or after thawing would effect cryosurvivability and hatching rate of vitrified blastocysts produced by IVF. The IVF blastocysts were derived from oocytes obtained from abattoir ovaries; 15–20 μm ZP opening by a XYClone® system (Hamilton Thorne Biosciences, Beverly, MA, USA), using a pulse strength of 90% and pulse length of 800 μs, was adopted for assisted hatching. The hatching rates of fresh blastocysts of various ages with or without ZP opening were observed within 24 h. Furthermore, 20% ethylene glycol (EG) + 20% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) + 0.5 M sucrose was adopted as vitrificaiton medium in the following experiments, and the expanded blastocysts harvested on Days 6, 7, 8, and 9 were respectively divided into three groups: Group 1: the blastocysts were vitrified after 15 to 20 μm ZP opening opposite to the inner cell mass, and the blastocoels were also blotted in order to outflow the blastocoelic fluid before vitrification; Group 2: the 15 to 20 μm ZP cutting by laser was performed immediately after thawing; Group 3: as control, the blastocysts were vitrified and thawed without any other treatment. The thawed blastocysts in different groups were cultured for 72 h to observe the survival and hatching rates. The results showed that 1) the hatching rate of fresh Day 9 blastocysts that underwent ZP cutting was higher than that of fresh counterpart (77.8% v. 50.0%, 28/36 v. 20/40, P < 0.05); 2) after vitrification, the ZP of blastocysts was averagely thickened for 2.8 μm; and 3) the cryosurvival and hatching rates of Days 6 to 8 blastocysts in three groups were not different from each other, whereas as for Day 9 blastocysts, the cryosurvival rate of vitrified blastocysts in Group 1 was significantly higher than Group 3 (75.0% v. 53.8%, 30/40 v. 28/52, P < 0.05), and the hatching rate of vitrified blastocysts in Group 2 was significantly higher than Group 3 (80.0% v. 42.9%, 16/20 v. 12/28, P < 0.05). In conclusion, laser-assisted hatching can promote the hatching rate of fresh and vitrified blastocysts derived from Day 9. Furthermore, ZP opening and blastocoel breaking before vitrification can also improve the cryosurvival rate of Day 9 blastocysts. Abstract Background: Prior, retrospective analysis of nightly fasting among women with breast cancer suggests that fasting less than 13 hours per night may be associated with higher risk of breast cancer recurrence. Small studies suggest that fasting duration can influence inflammation, obesity, sleep, and other potential mediators of breast cancer recurrence risk. Prolonged overnight fasting is a simple, nonpharmacological behavioral intervention strategy that may be doable for most patients. We designed this pilot study to prospectively evaluate the feasibility of prolonged overnight fasting among breast cancer survivors. Methods: We designed a single-arm, pilot study to evaluate the feasibility of fasting for 13 hours overnight for a 12-week period among women with a history of early stage breast cancer (I to III) who had completed initial cancer therapy at least 6 months prior. Baseline and end of study assessments included measurements of body mass index (BMI), quality of life (QOL) (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - General (FACT-G)), mood (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)), fatigue (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT) - Fatigue), levels of physical activity (Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire), and blood biomarkers (expanded lipid profile, hemoglobin A1c, C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, leptin, adiponectin). Patient-reported outcome (PRO) surveys were also administered at 6 weeks. Feasibility was defined as ≥ 60% of participants documenting fasting in the food diary for 13 hours on at least 70% of nights during the study period. Changes in study measures from baseline were evaluated using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Results: Between July 2020 and January 2021, we enrolled 40 women with a history of breast cancer. Participants had a median age of 59.9 (range 34.9-76.3) and median time since diagnosis was 4.5 years (range 0.8-20.7). At baseline, BMI was normal (18.5-24.9) in 40.0%, overweight (25-29.9) in 37.5%, and obese (≥30) in 22.5%. Forty-two and a half percent had Stage I cancer, 42.5% stage II, and 15.0% stage III. Sixty-five percent were on hormonal therapy. Ninety-five percent of participants fasted ≥ 13 hours for at least 70% of study days (95% CI 83%-99%). At 6 weeks, there was a statistically significant improvement in anxiety (p=.0007). No other significant changes were seen in PROs. At 12 weeks, there were statistically significant improvements in BMI (p=.0072), anxiety (p=.0141), depression (p=.0048), and fatigue (p=.0105). There was no association between change in BMI during the study and baseline BMI category, age, or endocrine therapy. There was no significant change in overall QOL, physical activity levels, or blood biomarkers at 12 weeks. Conclusions: Prolonged overnight fasting is feasible in the breast cancer population and may improve BMI, mood, and fatigue without a detrimental effect on overall QOL. The data from this study support the need for a larger, longer randomized study of prolonged overnight fasting in the breast cancer population to further evaluate the effects on body composition, mood, QOL, metabolic markers, and risk of recurrence. John Beverley’s Subalternity and Representation is an impressive work of synthesis that maps the contours of the last twenty years of Latin American literary and cultural criticism in unusually lucid prose. Through a wide-ranging discussion of history, political economy, literature, and mass culture in the Americas (North and South), Beverley identifies the stakes in contemporary Latin Americanist theoretical debates by situating these debates in sociohistorical context while also engaging, from a Latin Americanist perspective, current trends in cultural theory in the North American academy. The essays that make up Subalternity and Representation are organically linked to a degree unusual in a collection of what is, for the most part, previously published work. Moreover, Beverley tackles a host of complex issues with a level of clarity admirable in a field cluttered with an arcane jargon it generates at several times the rate it produces genuinely new ideas. His central theme is the problematic relationship of the progressive academic to the oppressed peoples about and on behalf of whom she or he writes. If academic knowledge, he argues, “is a practice that actively produces subalternity … in the act of representing it” (Subalternity 2), how can the politically committed scholar represent the subaltern within the academy without being complicit in the reproduction of the very relations of domination and subordination such representations are meant to oppose? Because Beverley’s attempt to address this question engages in an ongoing set of debates, some definitions and unpackings of key concepts are in order, beginning with those that appear in the title itself.

Abstract Clear Cell Sarcoma (CCS) is an extremely aggressive, rare soft tissue cancer accounting for approximately 1% of all sarcomas. Often diagnosed in young adults with a median age of 25 years, CCS has a strong propensity for local recurrence and metastasis with an overall high mortality rate. Current treatment recommendations include radical surgical extirpation, followed by radiation or chemotherapy. Nonetheless, there is a need for extensive postoperative follow-up as the efficiency of adjuvant therapy in managing this disease remains poor. Consequently, it is imperative to identify clinically relevant models to advance our understanding of CCS tumor biology and facilitate the development of novel therapies. Compared to conventional preclinical tumor models, patient-derived organoids (PDOrgs) better recapitulate the patient tumor biology, genetic heterogeneity, and therapeutic responses. Here, we describe the development and validation of a human biopsy-derived CCS organoid model 1010561-T. 1010561-T was established from a male patient's metastatic paraspinal mass. This PDOrg demonstrates a moderate growth rate (doubling time of ~20 days) and pleomorphic traits, consisting mainly of solid, grape-like clusters, as well as elongated cells of mixed morphology. Furthermore, this model was successfully maintained over 7 months in culture and remained stable more than one year after cryopreservation. 1010561-T exhibits the cytogenetic hallmark of CCS which is the presence of a recurrent t(12;22)(q13;q12) chromosomal translocation, resulting in a fusion between the Ewing sarcoma gene and activating transcription factor 1 (EWS/ATF1 fusion). Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) confirmed that 1010561-T harbors a dual EWS/ATF1 fusion, namely EWS exon 8 to ATF1 codon 65 fusion (type 1) and EWS exon 7 to ATF1 codon 110 fusion (type 3). Quantitative RT-PCR and immunocytochemistry revealed strong expression of melanocytic differentiation markers typical of CCS including melanocyte inducing transcription factor (MITF), melan-A (MLANA), premelanosome protein (PMEL), and S100 calcium binding protein A11 (S100A11). Additionally, the gene expression profile of 1010561-T is in concordance with a well-established CCS cell line, SU-CCS-1. To our knowledge, 1010561-T is the first human CCS organoid model. It is, therefore, a valuable resource for advancing our understanding of the biology of this very rare disease, in addition to being a useful tool for validating new preclinical therapies that are undoubtedly needed to achieve better clinical outcomes for patients. To avoid the influence of column vibration on machining precision, it is necessary to simulate the stiffness characteristics of the columns for CNC grinding machine, and to optimize the structure of the column by using sensitivity method. Based on structural characteristics of the grinding machine and structural characteristics of the columns, a finite element model is established to simulate and calculate the first-four models of the columns. In order to optimize the structure of the column, a sensitivity analysis is made to calculate the sensitivity of natural frequencies and mass of the column to each panel and ribbed plate. Considering a weighting factor and taking integrated natural frequency of the column as an optimization objective, the mass of the column as a constraint, an optimization equation is established. By a quadratic programming method, the parameter optimization of the column is got as follows: the mass decreased by 4%, integrated natural frequency increased by 2%. Dynamic stiffness of the column has been optimized by harmonic response analysis, the results showed that the largest column in the Z resonance peak reduced by 8.44%.

Este artigo examina a projeção da China sobre o Sudeste (SE) Asiático a partir de três ciclos recentes: 1990-1997, 1997-2008, e de 2008 até hoje. Tem-se como hipótese que o SE Asiático tem se tornado um palco de grande relevância no jogo de poder e riqueza entre EUA e China desde 2008, e se afastado do cenário proposto por Giovanni Arrighi e Beverly Silver de formação de um “arquipélago de economias de mercado”, no qual as disputas por poder estariam subordinadas a ganhos coletivos por meio da interdependência econômica. Com foco na relação histórica SE Asiático-China, argumenta-se que apesar do esforço diplomático deste país, o terceiro ciclo de relações com a região é mais agressivo e tem elevado as assimetrias nas esferas comercial, financeira e político-militar. Somando-se isto ao pivô estratégico da administração Obama, concluímos que o acirramento da disputa entre as potências é um cenário provável.

A set of burning experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of vertical shaft geometry on natural ventilation in urban road tunnel fires. Results show that using vertical shafts to discharge smoke leads to a boundary layer separation near the right-angle connection of the shaft and the tunnel ceiling. In a low shaft, the turbulent-boundary-layer separation phenomenon causes relatively large-scale vortexes and restricts smoke from being exhausted, resulting in a negative effect on natural ventilation. Replacing the right-angle connection with the bevel-angle connection was proposed to split one separation point into two separation points, to attenuate the negative effect. The detailed characteristics of the separation phenomenon were analysed and the proposition was verified by Large Eddy Simulation. Results show that there are no relatively large-scale vortexes in shafts with bevel-angle connections, resulting in improved natural ventilation effectiveness. For lower shafts, the advantage of using the bevel-angle connection is more significant, and for shafts of the same height, the mass flow rate of smoke discharged by shafts with the bevel-angle connection increases up to 1.5 times of that by shafts with the right-angle connection. For relatively high shafts, it is about 1.2 times.

A spiral bevel gear system supported on thrust bearings considering the coupled bending-torsional nonlinear vibration is proposed and an eight degrees of freedom (8DOF) lumped parameter dynamic model of the spiral bevel gear system combined with time-varying stiffness, static transmission error, gear backlash, and bearing clearances is investigated. The spiral bevel gear system is analyzed with the equations of motion and the dynamic response is solved using the Runge-Kutta method. The effects of mesh frequency, mesh damping coefficient, load coefficient, and gear backlash are revealed, which describe the true mesh characteristics of the spiral bevel gear system. The bifurcation characteristics as jump discontinuities, periodic windows, and chaos are obtained by studying time histories, phase plane portraits, Poincaré maps, Fourier spectra, and global bifurcation diagrams of the gear system. The results presented in this study provide some useful information for engineers in designing and controlling such gear systems.

A combined spiral bevel gear and planetary gear set was designed for bucket elevators to reduce the system’s complexity and improve the system’s efficiency. The dynamic model of a combined spiral bevel gear and a 2K-H planetary gear train was developed by using the lumped mass method, where the time-varying mesh stiffness and comprehensive mesh error were introduced. Then, the equations of motion of the system were solved with the Newmark numerical integration method, and the dynamic transmission error and mesh force of the gear pairs were obtained. The influences of different input rotational speeds and power on the dynamic response of the system were analyzed. The dynamic responses of the bearings between the bevel gears, planet carrier, and box were calculated. It was found that the dynamic mesh force gradually decreased with an increase in speed, and it increased with an increase in power. For low-speed and heavy-load transmission systems, the influence of power on the mesh force was more significant. It could also be found that the efficiency of the transmission system composed of a spiral bevel gear and a planetary gear was improved compared with that of the traditional system. Finally, the effectiveness of the dynamic model was validated through a comparison of the test signals. The results of the analysis in this study can be used to guide the design of vibration and noise reduction.

Stellar wind mass loss determines the evolution and final fate of these objects, and determines whether they form black holes (with stellar or intermediate mass) or explode as pair instability supernovae, leaving no remnant. We present a computationally inexpensive evolutionary scheme for very massive stars that can readily be implemented in an N-body code. Using our new N-body code ‘Youngbody’ which includes a detailed treatment of massive stars as well as this new scheme for very massive stars, we discuss the formation of intermediate mass and stellar mass black holes in young starburst regions. A more detailed account of these results can be found in Belkus, Van Bever & Vanbeveren (2007).

This work aims to improve the powder-bed spreading process for laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing by gaining a greater understanding of metal powder flowability through numerical modelling and in-situ experimentation.Using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to study the flowability of the powder and its intrinsic properties. A high-fidelity particle-scale model was developed to capture the dynamics of metal particle interactions in a virtual Hall flow meter based on a modified Beverloo law. The results are validated experimentally using the Hall flow static powder characterisation technique.For SS316L powder alloy with the hall-value of 29s/50g and with an angle of repose (AOR) of 32, the modelled powder that exhibited the same flow behaviour was found using 0.5 for both rolling and sliding coefficients resulting in simulated Hall value of 28.55s/50g with a simulated flow rate of 0.571 g/s, which is validated by AOR of the simulated powder [31.2-32.6]. However, rolling friction had minimal effect on the mass flow rate but increased the angle of repose. Sliding friction significantly decreased the mass flow rate and increased AOR.DEM is an ideal method to study flowability. However, there are certain constraints imposed on the computational power by a number of simulated particles and simulation time-step. Future research may involve investigating other dynamic flowability characterisation techniques.Enabling a better understanding of powder particle flow at a micro-scale by modelling powder flowability. This leads to simulating a more realistic powder bed and improving the powder spreading process, leading to better AM parts quality.This paper provides a unique approach for modelling the flowability of SS316L powder using a Beverloo law-based design of the Hall flow meter. This will improve the modelling of the spreading process needed for metal 3D printing.

To accurately study the dynamic characteristics of the spiral bevel gear transmission system in a helicopter tail transmission system, the finite element model of the gear shaft was established by a Timoshenko beam element, and the mechanical model of the spiral bevel gear was created by the lumped mass method. The substructure method is employed to extract the dynamic parameters from the gearbox’s finite element model, and the dynamic model of the spiral bevel gear-shaft-bearing-gearbox coupling system was built according to the interface coordination conditions. In the model, the influences of time-varying stiffness, a time-varying transmission error, gearbox flexibility, unbalance excitation, and a flexible shaft and bearing support on the system vibration were taken into account simultaneously. On this basis, the dynamic differential equations of the full coupling system of the spiral bevel gear were derived, and the effects of the gearbox flexibility, the shaft angle, and the unbalance on the dynamic properties of the system were analysed. The results show that the gearbox flexibility can reduce the gear meshing force and bearing force, in which there is a more significant impact on the bearing force. The shaft angle affects the position, size, and direction of the system’s axis trajectory. Meanwhile, the meshing force and the bearing force of the system are also varied because of the various pitch angles of the driving and driven gears under different shaft angles. The unbalance of the gear shaft has an effect on the vibration of the spiral bevel gear transmission system in all directions, wherein the influence on the torsional vibration is the most significant, and the influence increases as the unbalance rises. The unbalance of the gear shaft also affects the meshing force and bearing force, which increases as the rotational speed rises. This research provides a theoretical basis to optimize dynamic performance and reduce the vibration and noise of a spiral bevel gear full coupling system.

Protective structures subjected to intensive loads that may benefit from the use of multilayer composite structures with excellent hardness and impact resistance represent an emerging research field in recent times. In this study, low-velocity projectile impact tests were performed on Functionally-graded Preplaced Aggregate Fibrous Concrete (FPAFC) mixtures to evaluate their performance. The effects of projectile needle type, fibre type and hybridization in addition to the number of layers in the composites on projectile impact were investigated. The bioinspiration of the excellent impact strength of turtle shells was used to design an FPAFC comprising a higher amount of steel and polypropylene fibres at the outer layers. In parallel, one and two-layered concretes were also cast to assess the effectiveness of three-layered FPAFC. The tests were performed on disc specimens using non-deformable compound bevel, convex edge and hollow edge projectiles. The damage severity was quantified by the top damage area, bottom damage area and depth of penetration. In addition, a simple analytical model for predicting the composite mass expulsion was developed and implemented. Findings indicated that regardless of fiber type and distribution, the compound bevel projectile needle produced the lowest impact numbers for all single, double and triple-layer specimens compared to the convex edge and hollow edge projectiles. Repeated projectile impacts increased the penetration depth and damaged area at the top and bottom surfaces of all targets. Targets were more resistant to convex edge and hollow edge projectile penetration than the compound bevel. The experimental and analytical model results for mass expelled from the top surface are reasonably acceptable. This research gives an idea of developing advanced fibrous composite with superior impact resistance for the promising protective structures.

Este artigo tem como objetivo verificar a relação entre os personagens da franquia IT e as teorias psicanalíticas da estruturação psíquica. A partir de uma pesquisa exploratória de caráter qualitativo, foi realizada uma análise fílmica dos traumas e medos dos personagens dos filmes “IT – A Coisa” (2017) e “IT – Capítulo Dois” (2019) associados aos conceitos de recalque, retorno do recalcado e sintomas, como alucinações. Com base no referencial teórico psicanalítico, foi possível analisar três personagens: Beverly que lida com questões da puberdade e um pai abusivo, ouvindo vozes no banheiro e observando sangue saindo da pia na sua adolescência, e quando adulta se casou com um homem que possui traços de seu pai. Ben, um garoto novo na cidade, com dificuldades de enturmar-se, e durante uma ida na biblioteca se depara com uma pessoa desmembrada, quando mais velho afoga-se em terra pedindo ajuda sem ninguém o ouvir. E Bill que se sente culpado pelo desaparecimento de seu irmão mais novo, revivendo seu trauma anos depois, porém dessa vez como se de fato fosse culpado, observando seu irmão como um fantoche que ele mesmo segura. Tais situações aparecem como retornos do recalcado, como sintomas de alucinação, ressurgindo quando adultos. Dessa forma, a pesquisa conseguiu explorar os conceitos teóricos relacionando-os com os personagens e cenas escolhidos, e possibilitou observar que mesmo havendo uma complexidade, é possível relacionar tudo o que consumimos com a teoria psicanalítica, seja livros, seriados e filmes.

To avoid the influence of column vibration on machining precision, it is necessary to simulate the stiffness characteristics of the columns for CNC grinding machine, and to optimize the structure of the column by using sensitivity method. Based on structural characteristics of the grinding machine and structural characteristics of the columns, a finite element model is established to simulate and calculate the first-four models of the columns. In order to optimize the structure of the column, a sensitivity analysis is made to calculate the sensitivity of natural frequencies and mass of the column to each panel and ribbed plate. Considering a weighting factor and taking integrated natural frequency of the column as an optimization objective, the mass of the column as a constraint, an optimization equation is established. By a quadratic programming method, the parameter optimization of the column is got as follows: the mass decreased by 4%, integrated natural frequency increased by 2%. Dynamic stiffness of the column has been optimized by harmonic response analysis, the results showed that the largest column in the Z resonance peak reduced by 8.44%.

An 3D mathematical model was established to illustrate weld pool development in the ASHPW (Automated Submerged Horizontal Position Welding) process. This model takes into consideration the spatial position characteristic of ASHPW, and used the heat transfer and mass transfer phenomena during welding process to explain the weld geometry mechanism in order to correctly design the bevel geometry. The final results show that the predicted geometry , such as the weld cross-section, weld width and weld cross section area, are in good agreement with experimental measurements.

To solve the dynamic load distribution mechanism of the power split transmission system of spiral bevel gears, according to the characteristics of the closed loop of power flow, the deformation coordination condition is deduced. Through the gear teeth geometric contact analysis technique, the time-varying meshing stiffness conditions in the model are solved. The linear time-varying dynamic model of the torsional vibration of the bevel gear split transmission system is established by the lumped mass parameter method. Considering the influence of time-varying mesh stiffness excitation conditions and damping, the dynamic differential equations are treated in a dimensionless way. The dynamic load change and dynamic response characteristics of the system are obtained by numerical solution, and the influence of parameters such as speed and damping on dynamic power flow and dynamic characteristics of the system is revealed. The results show that with an increase of meshing damping ratio, dynamic power flow of each gear pair changes little, and the vibration acceleration and its root mean square value of each gear pair of the system are smaller. With an increase in speed, vibration acceleration and its average amplitude increase.

Although bevel-gear robotic wrists are widely used in industrial manipulators due to their simple kinematics and low manufacturing cost, their gear trains function under rolling and sliding, the latter bringing about noise and vibration. Sliding is inherent to the straight teeth of the bevel gears of these trains. Moreover, unavoidable backlash introduces unmodeled dynamics, which mars robot performance. To alleviate these drawbacks, a gearless pitch-roll wrist is currently under development for low backlash and high stiffness. The wrist consists of spherical cam-rollers and spherical Stephenson linkages, besides two roller-carrying disks that drive a combination of cams and Stephenson mechanisms, the whole system rotating as a differential mechanism. The paper focuses on the design of the chain of spherical Stephenson mechanisms. The problem of the dimensional synthesis is addressed, and interference avoidance is discussed. An embodiment of the concept is also included.

Widespread habitat degradation has caused dramatic declines in aquatic biodiversity. Reconfiguring channels and adding physical structures to rivers has become common practice in order to reinstate natural processes and restore biodiversity. However, the effectiveness of such measures is often questioned, especially in urban settings where overriding factors (e.g., water quality) might constrain biotic responses to increased habitat heterogeneity. We monitored invertebrate and fish communities before and up to five years after extensive restoration of Beverley Brook, a small, urban river flowing through a Royal Park in London, UK. Total invertebrate density was 5–148% higher with restoration across the monitoring period, and there was an increase in evenness but not invertebrate richness. Riverflies (Ephmemeroptera and Trichoptera) and crustaceans (Amphipoda, Asellidae) showed marked increases in density with restoration, suggesting improved flow, enhanced water quality, and greater quantity of basal resources. Fish biomass increased by 282% with restoration as did fish richness and the average body mass of three common fish species. Our results provide evidence for the effectiveness of common restoration methods in increasing standing stocks across trophic levels, from basal resources to apex predators. However, we primarily observed changes in the density of existing taxa rather than the development of novel assemblages, suggesting that large-scale factors, such as water quality and the lack of adequate source populations, might be important for understanding changes in biodiversity following river restoration.

The general objective of this paper is to evaluate the effect of different IBA concentrations on greenhouse, shade and full sun survival, root vigor and seedling quality in Tectona grandis. To do so, mini-cuttings were prepared containing two pairs of leaves reduced to 25% of their original size (7.0 ± 1.0 cm) in length and bevel cut at the base. They were submitted to five treatments with different concentrations of indolebutyric acid (0, 500, 1000, 1500 e 2000 mg L-1), remaining in greenhouse, house of shade and in full sun for 30, 20 and 15 days, respectively. Survival was evaluated in greenhouse, house of shade and full sun; radicial vigor, height, diameter of the neck, ratio between shoot height and diameter, root dry mass, aerial, and total mass. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with five replications of 15 plants and five treatments. Data were submitted to the normality test, Bartlett test and polynomial regression of the second degree. As a result, it was verified that the use of IBA did not influence root vigor and survival, however, it provided seedlings with a higher dry mass, being the best the 2000 mg L-1 treatment.

The principle of recognition based on the use of the properties of a thin gas layer and the supporting surface of equipment, which provided the creation of a number of universal devices capable of solving the problem of sorting and culling piece parts by weight. A promising method of recognition by the generalized criterion (specific load) is presented on the basis of which two new orientation criteria were obtained (the area of the support surface of the product and its mass) are obtained on the basis of this method. It is proved that the gas layer has a high sensitivity to changes in the characteristic parameters of products, i. e. is able to recognize them. There is a need to develop automatic sorting and rejection devices for a class of small piece products with implicit design features and having understated physical and mechanical properties, as they can not apply to traditional means of automation, loading and orientation operations with mechanical grips, weighing in the stream. There are significant difficulties in the culling of piece products with bevels, shells, etc., which led to the creation of devices that provide manipulation of a wide variety of sizes of specific products with a decrease in dry mechanical friction between the product and the bearing parts of the equipment. Classification of specific product types and configurations of circuits pneumatic devices that use the effects in the thin gas bearing strata (the working surfaces and air chambers, view their movements, technological capabilities). The bases of recognition of products by mass on a gas layer with the use of various working surfaces, which formed the basis for the creation of a number of new sorting devices with a high level of flexibility, are proposed..

There are some methods to improve vibration strength of the gas turbine engine bevel gearwheels by using the dry friction dampers capable of damping resonance vibrations and operate under extreme conditions. The effectiveness of these dampers depends significantly on an adjustment of their mass-stiffness properties, pressure and other parameters. It is required to under-stand the damper operation laws to make a right choice of the parameters during designing, and that could be addressed by test simulations. This paper provides an acceptability assessment of a mathematical model based on the Coulomb friction linearisation in a damper-to-gearwheel contact within the gas turbine engine. Bevel gearwheels have a complex dimensional mode configuration in the damper contact area, therefore a calculation analysis of dynamic behavior of the linearised gearwheel-damper system was carried out from the nominal contact parameters, such as contact fit, stiffness of the normal elastic members in the contact. It is concluded that the damper slipping and the surface roughness are proportional. The stable solution limits have been defined to minimise the unknown parameters effect on the calculation result when adjusting the damper. The research results are used when adjusting the damper for the aircraft engine gearwheel. The strain-gauging test data were compared to the calculation results for the engine damped gearwheel, an acceptable convergence on damping has been obtained.

In gear transmissions, vibration causes noise and malfunction. In actual applications, misalignments contribute to intensifying the destructive effect of vibrations. In this paper, the nonlinear dynamics of a spiral bevel gear pair, with small helix angle, considering different misalignments, are deeply investigated. Axial misalignment, radial misalignment, and the combination of these two types are considered in this study. The governing equation is numerically solved through an implicit Runge–Kutta scheme. Since the main goal of this study is the analysis of the dynamic scenario, the mesh stiffness of the gear pair is obtained from the literature. The dynamical system is nonlinear and time-varying; it is analyzed through time responses, phase portraits, Poincaré maps, and bifurcation diagrams. Results show that, among the considered three cases with different types of misalignments, the spiral bevel gear with axial misalignment is the worst destructive case; aperiodic, subharmonic, and multiperiod responses are observable for this case. It is interesting that the chaotic responses for the case, having both types of misalignments, are less likely for the case with axial misalignment, only.

Lupin is the major break crop used by farmers in Western Australia but neither lupin nor wheat uses much water from the B horizon of the widespread duplex soils. This study investigated the productivity and water use of a range of crops and pastures during 2 seasons on a shallow duplex soil, with a sandy layer 30-40 cm deep, at East Beverley, WA. The aims of the work were to evaluate the crops as alternative break crops to lupin on these soils, and to establish whether roots could proliferate in the clay layer, promoting both water extraction from the subsoil by that crop and improving yields of subsequent wheat crops. During the winter of the first season, a perched watertable developed for almost 3 months and some crops (especially lentil) grew poorly. Yields in the second season were generally good (lupin was close to the calculated potential yield and canola and Indian mustard were >2 t/ha), establishing that successful crops of oilseeds and grain legumes can be grown on this soil provided that there is adequate water without topsoil waterlogging. Yields of subsequent wheat crops were largest when following legume crops (40% in one season and 135% in the second compared with wheat following wheat or barley) but were also significantly greater following oilseeds (22% and 102%). Roots of cereals and pastures reached 80 cm in both seasons, whereas those of the oilseeds reached 60-80 cm depending on crop and season. Rooting depth of legumes varied from 70-80 cm for field pea to 30-50 cm for chickpea and faba bean, with lupin extending to 60 cm in both seasons. As with shoot mass, root mass differed between seasons, although on average, in mid September cereals and oilseeds had a smaller proportion (0·12 and 0·14) of total mass below ground than the legumes (0·24) and pasture species (0·18). Only a few millimetres of water was extracted from the subsoil by any crop in either season and there was no evidence that tap-rooted legumes or oilseeds were better able than other crops either to exploit subsoil water for their own use or to create pores that subsequent wheat crops might exploit.
