Abstract That the Vergilian commentary by Aelius Donatus – one of the most influential late-antique commentaries that have not survived – was extant in the ninth century and available to some Carolingian scholars is still a widespread belief. The evidence in support of this thesis is said to have been provided by the Harvard Servianist J. J. H. Savage in three articles published between 1925 and 1931. In these articles, Savage claimed that a few marginal notes in one of the ninth-century primary witnesses to the DS scholia, the so-called ‘Vergil of Tours’ (Bern, Burgerbibliothek, Ms. 165), were drawn almost directly from Donatus’ commentary and that a marginal note in a roughly coeval Servian witness (Bern, Burgerbibliothek, Ms. 363) provided information about a place where a copy of the commentary could be found. A re-examination of the two manuscripts shows that the evidence adduced by Savage does not stand scrutiny and that the terminus post quem for the loss of Donatus’ commentary should be antedated by at least one century.

Streszczenie:
In order to offer an argument for the role that material philology should play in future editions of medieval lyric, this article examines the evolution of compilational practices between the earliest and latest trouvère chansonniers, covering the period 1230 to 1310. Though the argument focuses on “peripheral” codices — from geographical and temporal points of view, it touches on pivotal manuscripts that articulate the transition from one set of compilational values to another. The analysis concludes with suggestions for future text editors in their quest for editions that capture the variance and vagaries of trouvère performance and transmission throughout the thirteenth century.

The present study consists in a critical edition of thirty-six anonymous religious French poems mainly transmitted by French chansonniers V (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de france, fr. 24406) et C (Bern, Burgerbibliothek 389). Several elements made us think that a same collection of religious poems has been the source for V and C, but the two scribes copied from different branches of tradition. E. Schwan already recognised the common source to both manuscripts and indicated it with Vg. The songs of this edition follow ms. V's presentation, which transmitted the collection in the original order. Ms V is also taken as main source for the edition, as it is more correct and its scripta, if compared to C's one contains just few dialectical traces. The melodies's study of the collection confirmed what we had noticed during the texts'analysis: the religious poems are often composed on melodies and metrical schemes which existed and belonged to well known trouvères or troubadours, as Gace Brulé, Thibaut de Champagne, Gautier d'Espinal, Guiot de Provins, Robert de Castel, Jacques de Cambrai, Moniot d'Arras, Jacques le Vinier, Rigaut de Berbezilh, Folquet de Marseille

Streszczenie:
The central feature of this dissertation is an edition of the marginal notes, or glosses, on the Eclogues of Virgil, to be found in Bern Stadtbibliothek MS 172, a ninth-century manuscript written in carolingian minuscules and known as the 'floriacensis' after its place of origin, the monastery of Fleury. Together with a clearly related set of glosses in MSS 165 and 167 of the same Library, these commentaries have long borne the collective name Scholia Bernensia. Central to my thesis is the proposition that commentaries were not copied and transmitted with the same type of 'reverence' that was accorded to classical literary works, but that they were constantly subjected to modification, deletion and interpolation at the discretion of the scholar or scribe who copied them, in accordance with the perceived needs of those for whom they were intended. It follows, then, that the established methods of textual criticism, by which an ancient and original literary work is restored or established from the extant manuscripts, cannot be employed in the handling of commentaries and glosses, for no single antique original may ever have existed. To put it another way, each commentary may indeed be derived largely from original sources, and they may well be legion, but it is itself a new and unique composition assembled from a diversity of sources of varying age and value, at the compiler's discretion. It further follows from all that has been said above that the final printed edition of a commentary ought to reflect something of the character of the manuscript (or family of manuscripts) from which it is derived, that the often composite nature of the manuscript version ought not to be obscured, and that the modern editor ought to resist the temptation to fabricate a coherent and integrated commentary by padding it out with borrowings from such as Servius, whenever echoes of the older and respected commentator fall upon the ear. The modern edition should, then, be closer in character to a diplomatic version, for the precise nature of the text as transmitted through the ages is of very much more importance to the modern student of commentaries than to the scholar whose primary interest lies in the classics themselves; to the latter the actual process of transmission will only ever be incidental. This dissertation will also assess the evidence for an Irish 'interlude' in the tradition of the Scholia Bernensia and related commentaries, and in particular for the now well-established proposition that an immediate precursor of our commentary was one compiled by Adamnan, Abbot of Iona (ob. 704), incorporating a body of material which he in turn derived from Filargirius (or Philargyrius), an otherwise unknown pagan commentator of the putative Milan school.
