Streszczenie:
Abstract Research indicates that the misinterpretation of other’s emotions or intentions may lead to antisocial behaviour. This study investigated emotion and intention recognition in children with behavioural problems and examined their relationship and relations with behaviour problem severity. Participants were 7–11 year old children with behavioural problems (n = 93, mean age: 8.78, 82.8% male) who were taking part in an early intervention program and typically developing controls (n = 44, mean age: 9.82, 79.5% male). Participants completed emotion recognition and Theory of Mind tasks. Teachers and parents rated children’s emotional and behavioural problems. Children with behavioural problems showed impaired emotion and intention recognition. Emotion recognition and intention recognition were positively related and inversely associated with behavioural problem severity and, independently of one another, predicted behavioural problems. This study is the first to show that children with behavioural problems are impaired in identifying others’ emotions as well as intentions. These social cognitive processes were found to be related and inversely associated with severity of behavioural problems. This has important implications for intervention and prevention programmes for children with behavioural difficulties.

Streszczenie:
Background. Behavioural problems among schoolchildren can pose a burden on families and society. Objective. To determine the prevalence and pattern of behavioural problems among children living in Uyo, a town in South-South Nigeria. Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out among 572 pupils from six primary schools selected randomly from private and government schools in Uyo. Pupils with a normal IQ were selected using a systematic sampling method. The Rutter behavioural scale for teachers (B2) was completed by their teachers, and that for parents (A2) was completed by the parents. Student’s t-test was used to compare pairs of means, frequencies were compared using the chi-square test, and p<0.05 was taken as significant. Results. According to the teachers’ scale 132 pupils (23.1%) had scores within the range indicating behavioural problems, compared with 103 pupils (18.0%) on the parents’ scale. This was statistically significant (χ2 = 19.8, p=0.001). Pupils in government and private schools had mean scores of 7.4 (standard deviation (SD) 6.41) and 5.12 (SD 6.26) and 7.29 (SD 5.84) and 6.96 (SD 5.76), respectively. Behavioural problems were more common among children in government schools and among those in the lower socio-economic class. Boys had significantly higher mean scores than girls, and both scales showed more boys to be disturbed. Antisocial behaviour was commonest among boys and older children. Conclusion. There is a high prevalence of behavioural problems among primary school children in Uyo, with a predominance of antisocial behaviour. The government needs to provide appropriate services to deal with this state of affairs.

Streszczenie:
Introduction: Behavioural problems among school-going children are a matter of concern as they have serious consequences on the child, family, and society at large. Despite the high prevalence, there are very few studies related to behavioural issues among school children. The main objectives of the study were to assess and compare the behavioural problems among boys and girls. Method: A quantitative research approach and comparative research design were used. A total of 100 adolescent boys and girls were chosen from the selected school of Delhi by convenient sampling techniques. A structured rating scale was used to assess the behavioural problems among adolescent boys and girls. Result: The study showed that the majority of the participants (91%) had mild behavioural problems, 8% had moderate behavioural problems, and only 1% was found with severe behavioural problems. Conclusion: The study concluded that adolescents studying in school were having behavioural problems. The scores for eating disorders were more in boys than in girls whereas violent behaviour was equally common. Substance abuse was found to be the least common behavioural problem among both adolescent boys and girls.

Streszczenie:
BackgroundThe population of mixed ethnicity individuals in the UK is growing. Despite this demographic trend, little is known about mixed ethnicity children and their problem behaviours. We examine trajectories of behavioural problems among non-mixed and mixed ethnicity children from early to middle childhood using nationally representative cohort data in the UK.MethodsData from 16 330 children from the Millennium Cohort Study with total difficulties scores were analysed. We estimated trajectories of behavioural problems by mixed ethnicity using growth curve models.ResultsWhite mixed (mean total difficulties score: 8.3), Indian mixed (7.7), Pakistani mixed (8.9) and Bangladeshi mixed (7.2) children had fewer problem behaviours than their non-mixed counterparts at age 3 (9.4, 10.1, 13.1 and 11.9, respectively). White mixed, Pakistani mixed and Bangladeshi mixed children had growth trajectories in problem behaviours significantly different from that of their non-mixed counterparts.ConclusionsUsing a detailed mixed ethnic classification revealed diverging trajectories between some non-mixed and mixed children across the early life course. Future studies should investigate the mechanisms, which may influence increasing behavioural problems in mixed ethnicity children.

Streszczenie:
Objective: We studied the comorbid behavioural and mood problems in children with nonpsychiatric Tourette's syndrome (TS) and their relationship with severity of tic disorder. Method: Sixty-nine TS children and 69 healthy controls were assessed by Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS). The relationships between behavioural problems and severity of tic symptoms were analysed statistically by comparison, correlation and multiple linear regression. Results: Tourette's syndrome patients scored significantly lower (p<0.01) on the CBCL competency subscales and total score, and higher on all behavioural problem subscales and total score (p<0.01). Expectedly, the TS children had lower social competence than normal children. Among the TS children, the severity of tic symptoms is positively correlated with the severity of overall impairment in school and social competence. When the behavioural and mood problems commonly associated with TS were studied in detail, we found that delinquent behaviour, thought problems, attention problems, aggressive behaviour and externalizing are positively correlated with severity of tic symptoms. Conclusion: The findings indicated that children with TS-only also had a broad range of behavioural problems, and some of these were related to the severity of tic symptoms.

The first objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence rates of emotional and behavioural problems among Pakistani children. Age and gender effects were also investigated. The internal consistency and construct validity of the Urdu Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) were examined. In addition, the Pakistani sample was compared to a demographically similar American sample. Parents of 600 children ranging in age from 6 to 16 years completed the Urdu CBCL, with the sample divided equally between boys and girls. Data were collected from private and public schools in the Pakistani city of Lahore. A higher prevalence of Internalizing Problems as compared to Externalizing Problems was found in the overall sample. Within empirical syndromes, Anxious/Depressed was the most prevalent whereas among the DSM-oriented scales, Somatic Problems were the most prevalent. Similar to other cultures, there were significant gender differences with a higher degree of Externalizing Problems scores among boys as compared to girls. The converse was true for Internalizing Problems. Consistent with other cultures, Internalizing Problems increased with age whereas Externalizing Problems decreased with age. Despite the cross-cultural similarities in developmental trends, there was a significant effect of culture. Based on Cohen's criteria (1988), the effect size for Culture was medium (.06) for Total Problems scores. Cross-cultural comparisons indicated that Pakistani children had higher scores on all the scales except Thought Problems. The high Pakistani scores may be attributed to the current increase in violence and terrorism in Lahore. Current findings support the ecological-transactional model. There were also some significant interactions. Findings also indicated that the Urdu CBCL has adequate internal consistency in the current sample. With regard to construct validity, there is good convergent validity whereas discriminant validity needs to be improved. The theoreti
Most recent Canadian studies on the mental health and behavioural problems of Canadian immigrant children have focused on the impact of various socioeconomic and demographic factors. To better understand the emotional and behavioural problems of immigrant children, it is important to look beyond the children's family demographics and to assess the broader social context. The current study explored the effects of immigrant children's social relationships within families and peer groups, as well as the effects of their demographic backgrounds, on the children's behavioural problems. This paper is based on the data for 182 Chinese immigrant children aged 11 to 13 years old collected from the New Canadian Children and Youth Study (NCCYS) 1st Wave in Montreal. Measures of the social relationships and behavioural problems include the following three tools: children's perceptions of their emotional and behavioural problems scales (five subscales); children's perception of parental relationships (parental nurturance, parental rejection, and relationships with parents); peer relationships (social competence, involvement with peers in trouble, and participating in bullying). The regression results indicated that immigrant children's relationships with both parents and peers were the most significant predictor of specific behaviour problems. Demographic factors, especially family structure, gender, and ethnicity, were also found to influence behavioural problems of Chinese immigrant children. In order to improve the integration and adaptation process for immigrant children and their families with adjustment difficulties in their social relationships and behavioural problems, relevant intervention and prevention programs (including early identification of children at risk, developing pro-social skills, improving parent-child interaction skills) need to be developed in school settings in collaboration with the community, by government, and by ethno-specific community groups.

Streszczenie:
Sleep problems are frequently reported in children and studies indicate that approximately 15 to 30% of children experience some form of sleep difficulty (Partinen & Hublin, 2000; Richman, 1981; Zuckerman, Stevenson, & Bailey, 1987). Children's sleep problems often impact on family members, in particular parents, causing a considerable amount of stress and frustration. Difficulties with sleep are a common problem for typically developing children; however, research indicates that the incidence of sleep problems is even higher in the disabilities population (Didden, Korzillius, van Aperlo, Overloop, & de Vries, 2002; Espie & Tweedie, 1991; Richdale, Francis, Gavidia-Payne, & Cotton, 2000; Saxby & Morgan, 1983). This has implications for families already under considerable amounts of stress and pressure of having a child with a disability. The present study aimed to treat persistent sleep problems in children with disabilities using family behavioural intervention methods. A range of behavioural strategies was utilised to reduce sleep problems such as bed refusal, sleep onset delay, night waking, co-sleeping, and nightmares. Techniques such as a positive bedtime routine, reward systems, the parental presence programme, standard and modified extinction were used. In one case, a short-term decremental dose of a mild sedative (trimeprazine tartrate) was used in the initial stages of implementing a behavioural intervention to reduce child and parent distress. A "fear busting and monster taming" programme (White, 1985) was employed in conjunction with other behavioural techniques to reduce the occurrence of nightmares in another child. The results indicate that behavioural family interventions are effective in treating sleep problems in children with disabilities. The majority of the sleep behaviours targeted for intervention were eliminated or reduced to low levels of occurrence with 9 out of 11 target behaviours rated as showing a substantial improvement. These positives changes were maintained at follow-up with the exception of co-sleeping in Case Study Two. The social validity for the programmes was high and caregivers reported satisfaction.

Streszczenie:
The existence of emotional and behavioural problems in young children has been extensively documented. Such problems have a substantial impact on children themselves, their families, their schools, and society more generally. A basic tenet of social cognitive psychology is that the way people think in their daily lives about themselves and their social world is linked with the way they behave. Based on this assumption, the main aim of this thesis was to explore whether and how children who show emotional and behavioural problems in the first year of primary school, differ from their nonproblem peers in the way they think about themselves and their relationships with their mothers, teachers and peers. Three studies were carried out. The first two dealt with the development of a standardised procedure for identifying emotional and behavioural problems in children in the first year of primary school. The third study endeavoured to explore social cognitions of the selected children. In the first study, 61 reception class teachers in London (England) evaluated three existing behaviour rating scales by providing assessments for children in their classes. One of these scales was further evaluated for use In India, In a normative study of 488 children. Using this measure, 210 children attending the first year In 26 primary schools were selected. Of these, 115 formed the target group- showing emotional and behavioural problems and the rest were their comparison children- free from reported problems but matched on gender within the same class. The children's social cognitions were examined in individual interviews. The measures used included the Harter Scale, Cassidy's Incomplete Stories With Doll Families and the Puppet Interview. The children in the target group scored significantly lower than the comparison group on all the measures except the Puppet Interview, depicting a less positive view of themselves and their relationships with their mothers, teachers and peers. Follow up analyses indicated that the differences in the two groups were largely due to those children who showed internalising or multiple problems. Children showing predominantly externalising problems did not differ significantly from their comparisons. The findings add to the literature by showing that a meaningful link exists.

Streszczenie:
This article is aimed at the study of deviant behaviour in children with intellectual disabilities. It is well known that mental disability has a negative impact on the functioning of the emotional-volitional sphere and as a result facilitates the development of behavioural disorders. The lack of self-regulation, the underdevelopment of thinking manifested by the lack of criticism leads to the impossibility of choosing a correct model of relationship with those around us. This research issue is better studied in the psychology of personality, development and education. A theoretical study is shown, the research problem is argued, general and specific objectives are formulated, research tools are described and preliminary results as well as the theoretical-practical significance of the paper.

Streszczenie:
This paper describes the research design for investigating and evaluating the Child Labour: Action-Research-Innovation in South and South-Eastern Asia (CLARISSA) social protection cash-plus intervention in a slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. After an introductory section, the second section elaborates on contribution analysis – the methodological approach underpinning the research design. The third section provides an overview of the intervention, and the fourth explores the overall design of the evaluation, its guiding framework, and the timeline of the intervention rollout and data collection. The fifth and sixth sections address the project’s suite of quantitative and qualitative methods, and the approach to data analysis. Using four panel surveys, bi-monthly monitoring, in-depth interviews, group discussions and direct observations, the research will zoom in on specific behaviours. First, at the individual level, we want to learn how people adopt alternative livelihoods in response to the intervention. Second, at the household level, we consider how community mobilisation and cash transfers help households to resolve intra‑household problems. Third, at the group level, we consider how groups manage collective action in response to community mobilisation. For each of these behaviour change outcomes, we want to understand the realist evaluation question, ‘Why does the intervention work, for whom, and under what conditions?’ We also want to assess whether these new behaviours change the propensity for children to be involved in the worst forms of child labour.
