In April 2015, the Freddie Gray protests/riots/uprisings in Baltimore, Maryland, sparked a conversation on the national scene and in classrooms across the country. In my classroom near Baltimore, these events became a test case on how to teach and be in a moment of crisis. Building on a bricolage of methodologies, I explore teaching Bonilla-Silva's (2014) work on color-blind racism in my “Sport and Media” class during the Freddy Gray riots/protests/uprisings. By using my observations, official communications/e-mails, ethnographic snapshots of my students’ writings, and observations during these events, I explore teaching through a crisis and learning lessons on teaching race and politics.

This article considers today’s ‘post-digital’ political publishing through the material forms of an experimental book, The 2015 Baltimore Uprising: A Teen Epistolary. Anonymously published and devoid of all editorial text, the book is comprised entirely of some 650 screen-grabbed tweets, tweets posted by black Baltimore youth during the riots that ensued on the police killing of Freddie Gray. It is a crisis-ridden book, bearing the wrenching anti-black terror and rebellion of Baltimore 2015 into the horizon of publishing. Drawing on critical theories of books and digital media, and bringing Saidiya Hartman and Frank Wilderson to bear on issues of publishing, the article appraises seven aspects of this book’s materiality: its epistolary structure and rupture with the book-as-closure; its undoing of the commodity form of books; the ‘poor image’ of its visual scene; its recourse to facial redaction and voiding of narrative progression; and its destabilization of readers’ empathy.

Abstract. In order to utilize satellite-based aerosol measurements for the determination of air quality, the relationship between aerosol optical properties (wavelength-dependent, column-integrated extinction measured by satellites) and mass measurements of aerosol loading (PM2.5 used for air quality monitoring) must be understood. This connection varies with many factors including those specific to the aerosol type, such as composition, size and hygroscopicity, and to the surrounding atmosphere, such as temperature, relative humidity (RH) and altitude, all of which can vary spatially and temporally. During the DISCOVER-AQ (Deriving Information on Surface conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality) project, extensive in-situ atmospheric profiling in the Baltimore, MD–Washington, DC region was performed during fourteen flights in July 2011. Identical flight plans and profile locations throughout the project provide meaningful statistics for determining the variability in and correlations between aerosol loading, composition, optical properties and meteorological conditions. Measured water-soluble aerosol mass was composed primarily of ammonium sulfate (campaign average of 32 %) and organics (57 %). A distinct difference in composition was observed with high-loading days having a proportionally larger percentage of ammonium sulfate (up to 49 %) due to transport from the Ohio River Valley. This composition shift caused a change in the aerosol water-uptake potential (hygroscopicity) such that higher relative contributions of ammonium sulfate increased the bulk aerosol hygroscopicity. These days also tended to have higher relative humidity causing an increase in the water content of the aerosol. Conversely, low aerosol loading days had lower ammonium sulfate and higher black carbon contributions causing lower single scattering albedos (SSAs). The average black carbon concentrations were 240 ng m−3 in the lowest 1 km decreasing to 35 ng m−3 in the free troposphere (above 3 km). Routine airborne sampling over six locations was used to evaluate the relative contributions of aerosol loading, composition, and relative humidity (the amount of water available for uptake onto aerosols) to variability in mixed layer aerosol. Aerosol loading was found to be the predominant source accounting for 88 % on average of the measured spatial variability in extinction with lesser contributions from variability in relative humidity (10 %) and aerosol composition (1.3 %). On average, changes in aerosol loading also caused 82 % of the diurnal variability in ambient aerosol extinction. However on days with relative humidity above 60 %, variability in RH was found to cause up to 62 % of the spatial variability and 95 % of the diurnal variability in ambient extinction. This work shows that extinction is driven to first-order by aerosol mass loadings; however, humidity-driven hydration effects play an important secondary role. This motivates combined satellite/modelling assimilation products that are able to capture these components of the AOD-PM2.5 link. Conversely, aerosol hygroscopicity and SSA play a minor role in driving variations both spatially and throughout the day in aerosol extinction and therefore AOD. However, changes in aerosol hygroscopicity from day-to-day were large and could cause a bias of up to 27 % if not accounted for. Thus it appears that a single daily measurement of aerosol hygroscopicity can be used for AOD-to-PM2.5 conversions over the study region (on the order of 1400 km2). This is complimentary to the results of Chu et al. (2015) that determined the aerosol vertical distribution from "a single lidar is feasible to cover the range of 100 km" in the same region.

Care during mass casualty events (MCE) has improved during the last 15 years. Military and civilian collaboration has led to partnerships which augment the response to MCE. Much has been written about strategies to deliver care during an MCE, but there is little about how to transition back to normal operations after an event. A panel discussion entitled The Day(s) After: Lessons Learned from Trauma Team Management in the Aftermath of an Unexpected Mass Casualty Event at the 76th Annual American Association for the Surgery of Trauma meeting on September 13, 2017 brought together a cadre of military and civilian surgeons with experience in MCEs. The events described were the First Battle of Mogadishu (1993), the Second Battle of Fallujah (2004), the Bagram Detention Center Rocket Attack (2014), the Boston Marathon Bombing (2013), the Asiana Flight 214 Plane Crash (2013), the Baltimore Riots (2015), and the Orlando Pulse Night Club Shooting (2016). This article focuses on the lessons learned from military and civilian surgeons in the days after MCEs.

Abstract. We present the organization, structure, instrumentation, and measurements of the Northeast Corridor greenhouse gas observation network. This network of tower-based in situ carbon dioxide and methane observation stations was established in 2015 with the goal of quantifying emissions of these gases in urban areas in the northeastern United States. A specific focus of the network is the cities of Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC, USA, with a high density of observation stations in these two urban areas. Additional observation stations are scattered throughout the northeastern US, established to complement other existing urban and regional networks and to investigate emissions throughout this complex region with a high population density and multiple metropolitan areas. Twitter has emerged as a new application paradigm of sensing the physical environment by using human as sensors. These human sensed observations are often viewed as binary claims (either true or false). A fundamental challenge on Twitter is how to ascertain the credibility of claims and the reliability of sources without the prior knowledge on either of them beforehand. This challenge is referred to as truth discovery. An important limitation exists in the current Twitter-based truth discovery solutions: they did not explore the theme relevance aspect of claims and the correct claims identified by their solutions can be completely irrelevant to the theme of interests. In this paper, we present a new analytical model that explicitly considers the theme relevance feature of claims in the solutions of truth discovery problem on Twitter. The new model solves a bi-dimensional estimation problem to jointly estimate the correctness and theme relevance of claims as well as the reliability and theme awareness of sources. The new model is compared with the discovery solutions in current literature using three real world datasets collected from Twitter during recent disastrous and emergent events: Paris attack, Oregon shooting, and Baltimore riots, all in 2015. The new model was shown to be effective in terms of finding both correct and relevant claims.

A meeting in April 2015 explored the potential withdrawal of valuable collections of microfilm held by the University of Maryland, College Park Libraries. This resulted in a project to identify OCLC record numbers (OCN) for addition to OCLC’s Chadwyck-Healey Early English Books Online (EEBO) KBART file.[i] Initially, the project was an attempt to adapt cataloging workflows to a new environment in which the copy cataloging of e-resources takes place within discovery system tools rather than traditional cataloging utilities and MARC record set or individual record downloads into online catalogs. In the course of the project, it was discovered that the microfilm and e-version bibliographic records contained metadata which had not been utilized by OCLC to improve its link resolution and discovery services for digitized versions of the microfilm resources. This metadata may be advantageous to OCLC and to others in their work to transition from MARC to linked data on the Semantic Web. Abstract In 1984, the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) was started to identify factors in the HIV epidemic related to disease risk and treatment progression among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in four urban areas in the US: Baltimore, MD/Washington, D.C.; Chicago, IL; Pittsburgh, PA, and Los Angeles, CA. MACS participants complete biannual study visits involving HIV testing, biometric screenings, and psychosocial data collection. In 2015 a MACS sub-study, the Understanding Patterns of Healthy Aging among MSM Project (HAMSM), was started to better understand resiliencies promoting well-being among MSM age 40 and older, including those with HIV. HAMSM has helped us to understand aging trajectories among MSM, and provides a unique combination of physiological and psychosocial data that can inform efforts to support MSM in healthy aging. This symposium will present emerging findings from the HAMSM study. Our first paper examines the relationships between psychological connection to the gay community (PSOC) and developmental regulatory strategies associated with health behaviors and more positive self-appraisals. The second paper examines how PSOC is related to HIV risk reduction behaviors, and if there are differences in such behaviors based on HIV status. Our third paper considers how self-perceptions of aging (age discrepancy, aging satisfaction) are related to frailty and frailty transitions, and if these relationships differ by HIV status. The final paper examines the relationship of social support to frailty among MSM by HIV status. Implications of these findings for research, policy, and programs targeting MSM will be discussed.

Abstract. In order to utilize satellite-based aerosol measurements for the determination of air quality, the relationship between aerosol optical properties (wavelength-dependent, column-integrated extinction measured by satellites) and mass measurements of aerosol loading (PM2.5 used for air quality monitoring) must be understood. This connection varies with many factors including those specific to the aerosol type – such as composition, size, and hygroscopicity – and to the surrounding atmosphere, such as temperature, relative humidity (RH), and altitude, all of which can vary spatially and temporally. During the DISCOVER-AQ (Deriving Information on Surface conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality) project, extensive in situ atmospheric profiling in the Baltimore, MD–Washington, D.C. region was performed during 14 flights in July 2011. Identical flight plans and profile locations throughout the project provide meaningful statistics for determining the variability in and correlations between aerosol loading, composition, optical properties, and meteorological conditions. Measured water-soluble aerosol mass was composed primarily of ammonium sulfate (campaign average of 32 %) and organics (57 %). A distinct difference in composition was observed, with high-loading days having a proportionally larger percentage of sulfate due to transport from the Ohio River Valley. This composition shift caused a change in the aerosol water-uptake potential (hygroscopicity) such that higher relative contributions of inorganics increased the bulk aerosol hygroscopicity. These days also tended to have higher relative humidity, causing an increase in the water content of the aerosol. Conversely, low-aerosol-loading days had lower sulfate and higher black carbon contributions, causing lower single-scattering albedos (SSAs). The average black carbon concentrations were 240 ng m−3 in the lowest 1 km, decreasing to 35 ng m−3 in the free troposphere (above 3 km). Routine airborne sampling over six locations was used to evaluate the relative contributions of aerosol loading, composition, and relative humidity (the amount of water available for uptake onto aerosols) to variability in mixed-layer aerosol extinction. Aerosol loading (dry extinction) was found to be the predominant source, accounting for 88 % on average of the measured spatial variability in ambient extinction, with lesser contributions from variability in relative humidity (10 %) and aerosol composition (1.3 %). On average, changes in aerosol loading also caused 82 % of the diurnal variability in ambient aerosol extinction. However on days with relative humidity above 60 %, variability in RH was found to cause up to 62 % of the spatial variability and 95 % of the diurnal variability in ambient extinction. This work shows that extinction is driven to first order by aerosol mass loadings; however, humidity-driven hydration effects play an important secondary role. This motivates combined satellite–modeling assimilation products that are able to capture these components of the aerosol optical depth (AOD)–PM2.5 link. Conversely, aerosol hygroscopicity and SSA play a minor role in driving variations both spatially and throughout the day in aerosol extinction and therefore AOD. However, changes in aerosol hygroscopicity from day to day were large and could cause a bias of up to 27 % if not accounted for. Thus it appears that a single daily measurement of aerosol hygroscopicity can be used for AOD-to-PM2.5 conversions over the study region (on the order of 1400 km2). This is complimentary to the results of Chu et al. (2015), who determined that the aerosol vertical distribution from "a single lidar is feasible to cover the range of 100 km" in the same region.

Abstract Background The factors that influence influenza viral load are poorly understood, but may have important implications for viral transmission and disease severity. We explored the relationship between patient and virus factors on influenza viral load across 4 consecutive influenza seasons. Methods Adult influenza-positive patients presenting to emergency departments in Baltimore, MD and Taipei, Taiwan between 2014 and 2018 were consented and enrolled. Nasopharyngeal (NP) samples and detailed paired data on symptom duration, demographics, and vaccination were collected. Viral load was inferred using the cycle threshold (Ct) values from quantitative real-time RT–PCR assays for 299 samples and influenza subtype was determined. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. Results Viral load was impacted by both patient and virus characteristics. Older age and shorter duration of symptoms was associated with a higher viral load (age: Ct difference -0.04, P = 0.022. symptoms: each increasing day, Ct difference +1.02, P < 0.001). Seasonal variability was observed, with the highest viral load associated with the 2014–2015 predominant H3N2 subtype (Ct 21.69, P < 0.001), where there was also a vaccine mismatch. Across seasons, H1N1 was associated with a lower viral load than H3N2 (Ct value + 2.66, P < 0.001). There was not association between gender and immunosuppression on viral load. Conclusion Our study demonstrates that both host and virus factors that can affect Ct values and inferred viral loads. As anticipated, higher viral load, were found to be associated with older age and shorter duration of symptoms; interestingly infection with the H3N2 subtype, traditionally associated with more severe disease was also associated with higher viral loads. Future-focused studies are required to better characterize these relationships, and directly evaluate relevance to both transmission and disease severity. Abstract Background: Although glucocorticoids have been adopted as the main stay treatment for granulomatous hypophysitis, refractory cases have been treated by infliximab with success in multiple reported case.[1,2,3] Given the low prevalence, incidence of granulomatous hypophysitis[4] and the advent of biologics, evidence of rituximab’s efficacy are largely based on a handful of case reports[1,2,3] and needs more evidence to label its utility. We describe a case of recurrent primary granulomatous hypophysitis in a 48-year-old female who had significant treatment challenge until there was good response after initiation of rituximab. Clinical Case: Patient was a known case of granulomatous hypophysitis and had undergone total hypophysectomy. Despite this approximately a year after her surgery she had become symptomatic and had MRI changes. She was started on a succession of immunosuppressive agents and high dose steroids to control recurrent symptoms. Due to treatment failure and very high steroid dose, patient was eventually started on Rituximab and patient had significant improvement of her symptoms as well as resolution of the MRI changes. Conclusion: Although there is a lack of prospective, double blind and controlled studies this case study highlights the utility of Rituximab as a potent alternative treatment for refractory given the adverse effect associated with the steroids and other immunosuppressive agents. Abstract BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) is the most common hematologic malignancy in the African American population, with an incidence more than 2 times higher than Caucasian population [Landgren O et al Blood 2006]. Historically, the African American MM patients have had better outcomes compared with other races [Ailawadhi S et al Br J Haematol 2012], but no biologic explanations exist for this observation. Greenberg et al [Blood Cancer J 2015] have recently reported on differences in commonly observed baseline cytogenetic abnormalities (CA) between African American and Caucasian MM patients seen at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), Cook County Hospital (Chicago, IL) and University of Maryland (Baltimore, MD). We examined the MM cohort at our referral center to validate these observations. PATIENTS & METHODS: The Levine Cancer Institute MM database was interrogated for all patients presenting with MM between January 2012 and April 2015. Baseline clinical and pathology variables were compared between the African American and Caucasian cohorts. Continuous variables were compared using nonparametric rank tests, while incidences and proportions (e.g. CAs including t(11;14), t(4;14), monosomy13/del13q and del17p) were compared using Fisher's exact tests. RESULTS: A total of 662 patients were identified; excluding those with MGUS classification, 368 patients were included in the analysis (African Americans n = 130, Caucasian n = 238). The median age of African American MM patients was significantly younger than Caucasian MM patients (median age 60 years vs. 65 years, p=0.010), with similar gender distribution. There was a numerically larger proportion of African American patients with anemia (40.8% vs 30.8%, p =0.166), however, there was no significant difference in degree of BM plasmacytosis amongst the two groups. The overall distribution of MM patients by IMWG risk stratification (Chng et al, Leukemia 2013) was also similar between the two groups. The African American MM patients had a numerically higher incidence of a metaphase abnormality on conventional cytogenetics (21.7% vs. 13.9%, p =0.154). They had a significantly lower incidence of t(11;14) [7.7% vs. 16%, p=0.024], a numerically higher incidence of t(4;14) [6.2% vs. 3.8%, p=0.309], and similar incidence of deletion 13/del13q [22.3% vs. 18.9%, p=NS ] and del17p [7.7% vs. 7.6%, p=NS ]. CONCLUSIONS: The present dataset is the largest single institution report on CA racial differences in MM patients. We found that unlike previous reports of lower incidence of t(4;14) or del17 p in African American MM patients by Greenberg et al, we have observed a higher incidence of t(4;14) and similar incidence of del17p in our experience compared to Caucasian MM patients. The different pattern of CA distribution compared to published literature may represent geographic heterogeneity and potentially influence survival outcomes. 5523 Background: Examining geographic distributions of high and low proportions of recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer (r/mCC) can identify regions with high need of intervention and advance our understanding of r/mCC community-specific risk factors. Previous studies of epidemiologic or geographic clusters in late-stage cervical cancer were conducted prior to the availability of modern treatments for r/mCC. Due to the rapidly evolving treatment landscape for r/mCC use of commercial claims is an important way to follow dynamic practice changes. Our study objective was to understand recent geographical disparities among r/mCC patients in the US. Methods: We developed a web-based tool, Cervical Cancer Geographical Disease Burden Analyzer, that allows users to quantify r/mCC disease burden across metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) over multiple years. The inputs to the web-based tool were extracted through a retrospective analysis of the 2015-2020 MarketScan commercial claims database using a previously validated methodology. We then calculated the r/mCC rate as the ratio of r/mCC cases over cervical cancer (CC) cases for each of the >400 MSA considered. The calculated MSA-specific r/mCC rate was visualized in an interactive US map,. The online interactive tool allowed the users to filter the results by year, age group, and minimum number of diagnoses at the MSA level. Results: Our findings showed that there is large variation with respect to r/mCC disease burden across MSA in the US, with a range of 0-45%. The top five MSA with the highest r/mCC rates from 2018-2020 are presented in the table. In particular, r/mCC rates in Sacremento-Roseville-Arden-Arcade (SRAA), CA and Boston-Cambridge-Newton (BCN), MA were on an increasing trajectory (33% in 2018 to 50% in 2020 in SRAA, CA; and from 41% in 2018 to 50% in 2020 in BCN, MA). On the other hand, while disease burden remained high, we observed decreasing r/mCC rates in Grand Rapids, MI (55% in 2018 and 31% in 2020, resulting in an average r/mCC rate of 42%). Finally, in Cape Coral-Fort Myers, FL and Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD the r/mCC rates have fluctuated across time but were consistently >30%. Conclusions: Our web-based online interactive tool can help with identifying areas with high need of intervention, and inform how access, prevention and new or emerging therapies may potentially change the distribution of r/mCC disease burden. To better understand underlying drivers of geographic disparities observed, further efforts should be targeted towards identifying local-level factors. [Table: see text]

Abstract Background Sustained virologic response (SVR) after hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment with either Interferon (IFN)-based or IFN-free regimens with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) has been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) events in majority white populations stratified by ASCVD score. However, the effect of IFN-free therapy on lipid profiles after SVR, as an indirect measure of CVD risk, is unknown in Black patients. Methods We evaluated HCV-infected Veterans from the Baltimore VA who were treated with DAAs between 2015-2019. We performed a retrospective analysis comparing lipid profile changes following SVR among those with early stage (F0-F2) fibrosis and advanced liver disease (ALD, F3-F4 fibrosis) using two-tailed paired t-tests. Independent t-tests were used to assess differences in lipid profiles based on fibrosis stage in patients with HIV and Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM2). Results Of those treated for HCV (n=1,528), 96% (n=1,474) achieved SVR. Demographics are shown in Table 1. Most patients were Black males (75%) and a minority (2.7%) received statin therapy during treatment (Table 1). Of 1,094 patients for whom data was available, an increase in total cholesterol (TC) and LDL (p&lt; 0.01 for both) was seen an average of 17 months after SVR, regardless of fibrosis stage (Figure 1). A significant decrease in triglyceride levels (p=0.04) was also seen in the ALD group after SVR (Figure 1). Mean pre-treatment HCV RNA level was comparable between fibrosis groups (F0-F2: 6.35 logs, F3-F4: 6.37 logs, p=0.46). There were 101 and 436 patients with HIV and DM2, respectively, for whom pre-treatment liver fibrosis data was available. In both groups, there were significant increases in LDL (p=0.008 (HIV), p=0.003 (DM2)) among patients with ALD following SVR. Table 1. Conclusion In a cohort of mostly Black HCV-infected Veterans, significant increases in TC, driven by increases in LDL, were seen after SVR regardless of fibrosis stage. In addition, patients with ALD and HIV or DM2, who have an inherently higher risk of CVD, had increased LDL levels, suggesting that these patients should be screened and treated for HCV prior to development of ALD. Correlates such as the ASCVD score should be considered in the timing of HCV treatment, in order to reduce the long-term risk of CVD. Background:Glucocorticoids (GC) are used in the treatment of various inflammatory conditions and it is estimated that about 1% of US population is treated with long term steroids. High doses of GC particularly those used by rheumatologists have adverse effects on bone health and is associated with rapid bone loss resulting in Glucocorticoid induced Osteoporosis(GIO) and an increased risk of fractures. The risk of bone loss relates to high daily dose and the high cumulative dose of the GC.Despite the availability of effective preventative and treatment options, GIO is often under treated with many patients treated only after a fracture has occurred.Objectives:The purpose of this study was to examine if providing education to care providers lead to an improvement in the identification, evaluation, and treatment of GIO.Methods:This is a single center, prospective study that was performed at a university based tertiary referral center. Patients over 40 years, receiving a total cumulative dose of GC of >5 grams and/or a single dose of >30 mg of prednisone or equivalent was enrolled. A patient list was generated by our technology group. All providers received intervention in the form of an academic Journal Club, at which the current ACR guidelines regarding GIO was reviewed. Monthly reminders were shared with all providers within our monthly communications.All the pre and post interventional data was analyzed. The continuous variables were analyzed using T-test or Mann-Whitney U test. Categorical variables were analyzed using Chi-square Tests or Fisher’s exact tests. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using mind mapping method in improving early childhood educator’s skill in mastering the child development assessment. This research is quasi-experimental using a pre-test and post-test design. The population was the entire classes of early childhood education training held by LPK Yayasan Indonesia Mendidik Jaka Sampurna at Cileungsi, Bogor. The participants were 45 early childhood educators. This study used three research methods which are implemented from learning methods in child development assessment was as pre-test and post-test. Data were collected by using two instruments to measure early childhood educators for child development assessment. The data were analysed by using t-test to measures the differences data in pre-test and post-test. The results showed that the use of mind mapping methods can help early childhood educators to improve their mastery of the development assessment concept which averages 51.9 percent. It showed significant results with ttest value is 18,266 (N = 10, α = 0,0). This capacity building is reinforced by various qualitative findings which arise from early childhood educators’ awareness to change the old learning style into learning by mind mapping method as a learning method that follows how the brain works. This study also found that early childhood educators as adults who are in the stage of formal thinking have shown an understanding that mind mapping method are appropriate, fast, easy and practical in mastering various development assessment concepts. This study aims to determine the effect of the whole language approach to the ability to read and write in English in early stages of children aged 5-6 years in one of the kindergartens in the Yogyakarta Special Region. The population in this study were 43 children who were in the age range of 5-6 years in the kindergarten. Twenty-nine participants were included in the experimental class subjects as well as the control class with posttest only control group design. Observation is a way to record data in research on early reading and writing ability. The paper presents research findings with 56 Roma children from Macedonia and Serbia between the ages of 3-6 years. The children’s knowledge of Romani as their mother tongue was assessed with a specially designed test. The test measures the children’s comprehension and production of different types of grammatical knowledge such as wh–questions, wh-complements, passive verbs, possessives, tense, aspect, the ability of the children to learn new nouns and new adjectives, and repetition of sentences. In addition, two pictured narratives about Theory of Mind were given to the children. The hypothesis of the authors was that knowledge of the complex grammatical categories by children will help them to understand better the Theory of Mind stories. The results show that Roma children by the age of 5 know most of the grammatical categories in their mother tongue and most of them understand Theory of Mind. References Bakalar, P. (2004). In recent years, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) has received wide attention. STEAM complements early childhood learning needs in honing 2nd century skills. This study aims to introduce a loose section in early childhood learning to pre-service teachers and then to explore their perceptions of how to use loose parts in supporting STEAM. The study design uses qualitative phenomenological methods. FGDs (Focus Group Discussions) are used as data collection instruments. The findings point to two main themes that emerged from the discussion: a loose section that supports freedom of creation and problem solving. Freedom clearly supports science, mathematics and arts education while problem solving significantly supports engineering and technology education.
