Streszczenie:
The Selfridge Collection of Medici manuscripts at Harvard Business School's Baker Library is the largest collection of Renaissance Florentine account books outside Italy. This collection documents both the business and personal economic activities of one branch of the Medici family through six generations, extending from the early fifteenth century through the end of the sixteenth century. It would be difficult to find, even in Florence, another family whose economic activities are so well documented over such a long span of time, a period we know as the Renaissance. This patrimony of family documents was sold by the Medici heirs through an auction at Christie's of London in 1918; and in 1927 the buyer, H. Gordon Selfridge, deposited the ledgers at the Harvard School of Business Administration. Around one hundred ledgers arrived at Harvard at that time, but one item in the Christie's inventory was missing. In 2007, I found this missing item in the catalogue of a Munich antiquarian book dealer, but it had already been sold to a private collector in Germany. When informed of its importance for the Harvard collection, the new owner of the ledger kindly permitted Laura Linard, director of Historical Collections at Baker Library, to have it microfilmed; and so finally, after eighty years, the missing item has returned, at least in a photographic version, to its original home, thereby completing the Selfridge Collection. This event could be the occasion for a reevaluation of a major collection of business documents too long ignored by historians.

Thomas Baker's music collection is part of the special collections of the Music Library at Western University, Ontario. Thomas Baker (1719/20–94) lived mainly in Farnham, southwest of London, England, in the County of Surrey. His music collection remained largely intact, which is unusual for the library of an eighteenth-century man who lived in a small town in rural England. The collection at Western consists of 90 separate pieces of music, collections of music, and books of music theory, plus six manuscripts; an inventory of the collection illustrates the variety of musical forms that he collected. His purchase of an organ leads us to conclude that he played the organ and possibly other keyboard instruments; about 25% of his collection is for keyboard. However, he was also interested in a variety of other musical forms, either as a performer or as a collector. From the surviving information, we can create a basic portrait of Baker and his music collection, even if we can draw no definite conclusions about how it was used or if he was merely a collector, or also a performer or an organizer of concerts.

The study of the unique bibliophile heritage of writers, historians, philosophers, scientists and artists who happened to be far from Russia is important from the point of view of understanding how the best representatives of Russian emigration sought to preserve the collections that they managed to bring out of Russia and multiply over the years of living abroad. Fortunately, many collections were returned to their homeland, but many rare priceless materials remained abroad forever. The problem of book collections existence, which for one reason or another and at different times fell into the category of “prohibited”, acquired special significance at the end of 1980s – the beginning of 1990s, after the abolition of all censorship restrictions in the country, and, as a result, the opening of library special collections and archives. The purpose of the article is – on the basis of a brief source review of emigrants’ collections which entered the leading libraries of Russia from abroad, and the collection gathered by the White Guard emigrant officer and politician, historian, publicist, bibliographer Ya. M. Lisovoy – to illustrate the need to move from the analytical stage of research activity in this subject field to the synthetic one aimed at accumulating research intentions on a general cultural scale. The fate of the collection in the period from 1915 to 1992 is traced, its structure is presented, and the analysis of Ya. M. Lisovoy publishing activity is undertaken.

The purpose of this article is to describe the scope and depth of the historic corporate annual report collections in twelve academic/research libraries in North America. For many decades, a few major academic business libraries have been collecting and preserving corporate Annual Reports (ARS), the reports sent to shareholders documenting the financial status and future plans of the company. Today these historic collections provide more than a record of the companies’ finances; they provide a glimpse into the social and cultural thoughts from the past and the corporate stories of individual companies. Digitization of these reports has only just begun; so, except for fewer than 900 companies (most of which have been on the Fortune 500 list), the companies included in these historic annual report collections are not available electronically. The combined collection of the twelve libraries includes reports from nearly 38,000 different companies. Stanford, Harvard, and Western Ontario have the largest collections. Harvard and Columbia have collections with significant historic depth, while Purdue has a collection with important late–twentieth-century holdings. The overlap of the collections is much smaller than was anticipated. The two largest collections, Stanford with over 18,000 companies and Harvard with over 11,000 companies, have only 3,668 companies in common. The overlap of companies between the largest five collections is only thirty-three companies. This research identifies these collections as unique and therefore valuable to the study of specific company histories and the industrial development in North America. Librarians need to preserve these collections and work toward digitizing them.

The library's collection is a repository of historical accomplishments that have been preserved for the benefit of current and future generations. The arrangement of the records will make the extent of the library's collection much more apparent. While the majority of documents have been digitized and come with appealing new features, rural, semirural, and urban areas in our nation are yet to be digitized. Information and media are now more accessible and compatible with digital libraries than ever before in the 21st century. This article provides an overview of library collections and materials. It covers the types of materials commonly found in libraries, including books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, and electronic resources. The article also discusses the importance of collection development policies and the role of librarians in selecting, acquiring, and maintaining library materials. Additionally, the article explores the challenges libraries face in managing their collections, such as limited space, budget constraints, and changing user needs. Finally, the article concludes with a discussion of emerging trends in library collections and materials, such as open access publishing and digital libraries.

Damascus has a long and distinguished history as a center for scholars and scholarship. The Umayyad Mosque has been a hub for Muslim scholars since the first Islamic century. Under the Ayyubids and Mamluks, a flurry of madrasa-building brought professional scholars to Damascus from all corners of the Muslim world. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Damascus, many scattered manuscript collections were consolidated into the National Library, housed in the Mamluk-era Madrasa al-Zahiriyya, the pride of Syrian scholars in the age of Arab nationalism. With French rule in 1920 came an army of researchers and catalogers who established one of the region’s best library collections at the Institut Français des Études Arabes à Damas. And, in 1984, the Asad Library was established to serve as a national library and to house manuscript collections from around the country. The mid-1990s is an auspicious time for American researchers in Syria because of the establishment of the American Research Institute in Syria, Inc. (ARIS), a consortium of American universities that has been working for the past several years to establish an institute for research and residence in Damascus on par with the European facilities there. The Institute has yet to be officially approved by the Syrian government, and present efforts depend on the outcome of regional political discussions.

This paper represents a continuation of the broader cataloguing description of iğāzatnamas in the manuscripts at Gazi Husrev-beg’s Library in Sarajevo, the Historical Archives of Sarajevo, the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bosniak Institute - Adil Zulfikarpašić Foundation, and the Oriental Institute in Sarajevo. It is well worth mentioning that this is the third paper that deals with this topic in the Annals of Gazi Husrev-beg’s Library. Prior to this work, Haso Popara in his paper „Iğāzatnamas in the Manuscripts of Gazi Husrev-beg’s Library” covered 63 iğāzatnamas from the manuscript collection of Gazi Husrev-beg’s Library with a brief cataloguing description, while in the previous issue of the Annals of Gazi Husrev-beg’s Library, iğāzatnamas from the Collection of Ottoman Documents of Gazi Husrev-beg’s Library were discussed in the paper „Iğāzatnamas in the Collection of Ottoman Documents of Gazi Husrev-beg Library’s in Sarajevo”. With this paper, we complete this very important topic from our cultural heritage. Along with the previous works, this paper should be treated as a starting point, where, in addition to cataloguing clarity, future researchers of the cultural-historical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina can find information that delves beneath the surface, and such information, analytically prepared and arranged, can be easily incorporated into broader and thematically more precise research. In this paper, we have maintained the same methodology for presenting iğāzatnamas as practiced in previous works. We have omitted introductory considerations as they have been thoroughly addressed in previous papers pertaining to this topic. For easier navigation through the paper, we have not listed the manuscript catalogues of the institutions, whose manuscript collections we are discussing, in footnotes but have provided them at the end. The paper presents ten iğāzatnamas from the manuscript collection of Gazi Husrev-beg’s Library, followed by thirteen from the Historical Archives of Sarajevo, thirteen from the National and University Library, five from the Bosniak Institute, and three from the Oriental Institute in Sarajevo. They are arranged chronologically within each of the mentioned institutions.

The historical origins of library collections studies as an academic discipline are examined; their cognitive content and prospects are characterized. Natural interrelations of library science and library collection studies are substantiated. The subject of the library collection studies and their methodological approaches, i. e. historical, system, structural, functional, structural-functional, cultural, information, communicative, etc., are discussed. The author focuses on the dynamics, continuity, traditions in the discipline, the scholarship ideals and standards. The ethical character of the library collection studies is emphasized; the ethical problems being faced on every stage of collection development, organization and management are envisioned. Special attention is given to Prof. Stolyarov’s academic activities: he is rightfully considered to be a founder of the academic discipline “Library collection development studies” in its modern status. Yury Stolyarov’s academic contribution is analyzed in its epistemological, pragmatist, praxeological, and institutional aspects. The author argue that the scientist leads in setting up acute research problems, defining adequate mechanisms for theoretical and methodological solutions and searching ways to implement research findings into library and information practice.

Purpose This paper aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the concept of community archives, offering a critique of the community archives discourse through a historical case study focused on the origins of the Gerber/Hart LGBTQ library and archives in Chicago. Design/methodology/approach This study explores the archival collections of the founders of the Gerber/Hart library and archives and the librarians that have worked there as a means for understanding the origins of the archival impulse, the rationale for building the collections and the practices that shaped the collections during the first decade of the organization’s history. Findings The historical analysis of the Gerber/Hart library and archives situates community archives and LGBTQ collections within the broader historical context that lead to the founding of the organization and reveals deep connections to the information professions not previously considered by those studying community archives. Originality/value The paper offers a reconceptualization of community archives as archival projects initiated, controlled and maintained by the members of a self-defined community. The authors emphasize the role of the archival impulse or the historical origins of the collection and the necessity for full-community control, setting clear boundaries between community archives and other participatory archival models that engage the community.

AbstractDigital archives have been used extensively in historical research. While many user studies regarding digital collections have focused on their users and information behaviors, there is not much research on how digital archives have contributed to historical scholarship and why historians use them. Understanding which digital collections are useful for topical coverage in historical studies will provide important information in the development and assessment of digital preservation projects. This study examines the topical coverage of historical articles that cite digital archival collections, and also the content of digital archival collections that appear in these articles. By mapping the contents of the articles and digital archival collections, this study aims to understand historians’ use context for their historical research and to relate the association of digital projects to the scholarship of history

Objective: to substantiate the significance of historical documents of legal concern in digital library resources of historical and cultural heritage as an important component of cultural memory; to generalize modern approaches to improving the popularization of these library resources in the information space. The methods of systematic analysis of library databases of historical and cultural heritage have been used in the research, in particular, the V. I. Vernadsky National Library (Ukraine), World Digital Library, Europeana, Gallica, Bavarian State Library, etc. Results. The monuments of law as a component of historical and cultural heritage, which need to be popularized in the information space, given the scientific, educational, and ideological significance, have been studied. Conclusions. The resources of monuments of law testify to the longevity of historical development, the heredity of legal culture, and the involvement of Ukrainian political and legal thought in the European context. Digitization of such documents and their inclusion in digital collections expands user access to monuments of law and intensifies their circulation in the cultural information space. Effective work directions on the popularization of digital sources of historical and cultural heritage according to the results of the analysis of foreign experience are the use of mobile technologies and the representation of resources in social media.

In the summer of 1992 I was fortunate enough to visit two large collections of photographs for the purpose of African historical research.Muse and subject of this essay, these collections are housed in the library of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (hereafter FCO) and the library of the Royal Commonwealth Society (hereafter RCS), both in London. Although comparable in some respects, the two contrast sharply in styles of organization. It is this contrast which motivates the present writing, as it illustrates certain effects of the organization of collections on the usefulness of photographs as historical sources, and it leads as well to some reflections on the nature of historical evidence and visual images. Both the RCS and the FCO have substantial holdings of photographic materials which should be of interest to Africanist historians generally. The size of the RCS collection has been variously estimated at between 45,000 and 70,000 photographs, while that of the FCO is approximately as large. In both cases, the researcher must make an appointment to see the collections, and neither is open to the general public. At the time of this writing, the FCO, having moved to a new location, has closed its photo collection, with no plans to reopen in the near future.Specialists on Nigeria will find that the FCO and RCS each have over 30 albums relevant to this country's history. The FCO has somewhat larger Nigerian holdings, while the RCS collection will be of greater interest to historians of Sierra Leone and other West African countries. The Nigerian materials in the FCO are generally older, many falling roughly between ca. 1890 and ca. 1920, while the RCS holdings tend to concentrate on the mid-twentieth century. The FCO's Nigeria albums are approximately equally divided between the northern and southern portions of the country, while those of the RCS focus more heavily on northern Nigeria.

The article provides materials of book science works on the study of English literature and respective book signs within different book collections in Ukraine. The author has analyzed the contents and filling of the English literature fund of the identified department of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. Based on chronological research method, the article has classified provenances from a historical perspective. The provenances of the Russian Empire, Soviet period, and foreign book signs have been identified. Through the analysis of various information resources and the names of book owners, the author could determine the ways of the English literature fund formation. The new identified provenances provided opportunities for researching books via book signs as a type of historical research. The use of different information resources fosters rich informational content of the source material of provenances, which enabled a more detailed research and attribution of book signs. The article provides book science and historical information on the spread of English literature in Kyiv and Odesa connected to the book business in these cities, development of science and libraries in Ukraine during the Soviet period, and activities of foreign firms involved in book business.

Based on BFO, an event-based ontology for historical description (EOHD) is designed. To define events, event-related vocabularies are taken from the Library of Congress’ event types (2012). The three types of history and six kinds of changes are defined.FindingsThe EOHD model demonstrates how to apply the event ontology to biographical sketches of a creator history to link event types.Research limitations/implicationsThe EOHD model has great potential to be further expanded to specific events and entities through different types of history in a full set of historical documents.Originality/valueThe EOHD provides a framework for modeling and semantically reforming the relationships of historical documents, which can make historical collections more explicitly connected in Web environments.

The article is devoted to the history of acquisition of the municipal and state repositories with early printed Cyrillic monuments in the 19th — 21st centuries. The aim of the research is to show the process of acquisition of the collections of state museums, archives and libraries of Russia. The author uses descriptions of the books from the catalogues published with the participation or under the guidance of experts in archaeography of the Moscow State University (MSU) named after M.V. Lomonosov. They cover the collections of the MSU Scientific Library, as well as the collections of museums, archives and libraries of Tver, Yaroslavl and Perm Regions, as well as the State Historical, Architectural and Ethnographic Museum-Reserve “Kizhi”.As a total there are involved 3953 descriptions containing information about the date and source of acquisition of the books to the repositories. The author concluded that archaeographic expeditions made a great contribution to the replenishment of the collections of the early printed Cyrillic monuments (860 books), but this contribution was not decisive. The most part of the unique monuments got into repositories as private donations or were purchased in old book shops, or during the expropriation of Church valuables. Only in the 1920s there were obtained 1068 books from the Church libraries.Significant event in the life of repositories in the twentieth century was more or less permanent redistribution of stocks between the major collections. The most part of the early printed Cyrillic books (almost half of them already introduced into scientific discourse), preserved now in the Scientific Library of the Moscow State University, was obtained not in the course of expeditionary work, but as a result of transfer of the books from the V.I. Lenin State Library of the USSR, the State Public Historical Library of Russia, the State Historical Museum and the Moscow Kremlin Museums.

The author, the current head of collection management at Purdue University Libraries (West Lafayette, Indiana) and a long-time proponent of meeting user information needs with innovative collection development practices as reflected by her extensive record of scholarship, has written a provocative work that can serve as both a wake-up call and catalyst to action for academic librarians who manage collections. Ward introduces readers to the concept of “rightsizing,” a term adapted from the corporate world that can be used to encapsulate activities done to increase a library’s overall floor space by reducing space devoted to storing physical collections. Effectively organized into five chapters, Rightsizing the Academic Library Collection provides a brief historical account of the state of affairs for academic library collections today, argues for the uncluttering and routine culling of physical collections based on current user needs, shows how to use a variety of data to make informed decisions, gives examples of actual rightsizing projects that can be duplicated, shows best practice workflows, and gives a glimpse into workable solutions that can be applied to make a library more relevant to its users. And, according to Ward, it is the user’s needs (scholarly or otherwise) and positive library experiences that should provide the impetus for librarians to “rightsize” (as opposed to supersize or wrongsize) their resource collections (viii).

The library of the teacher and gymnasiarch of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Ivan Samoilovych (c. 1737–1783) is a little-studied aspect of the history of the KMA and an extraordinary phenomenon in the domestic historical library science. Until now, it has not been the subject of independent historical and library research. Samoilovich was the teacher of rhetoric, poetics, and German. The main source base for the study of his library is the registration list concluded after the death of the owner in 1783, which numbered 1,147 items, and old prints which are now stored in the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine in the department of libraries’ and historical collections and in the collections of the rare books department. The bibliographic analysis of the library fund showed that the composition of the book collection reflects the professional activity of the owner and the range of his intellectual interests. The topics of the books cover a wide range of interests: editions of grammars, dictionaries, works used for translations from Latin and German, works on public speaking, works by ancient authors and European humanists of the Renaissance, works on philosophy, logic, theology, natural sciences, medicine, general and church history, pedagogy, library affairs, and fiction.

The purpose of the article is to reveal the role and importance of personal book collections for the formation of the library fund of the Military Medical Academy, as a unique information resource for educational, scientific and practical activities. The historical chain of library patronage is traced in the form of the donation to the library of entire book collections or their fragments by private individuals - representatives of various estates and social groups: statesmen, princes, merchants, publishers, bibliophiles. Information is provided on the largest donations of books and book collections by professors of the Academy and their heirs, on the further fate of these gifts. Among the professors-donors, the names of the leaders of the library are named: V.A. Manassein, A.R. Voynich-Syanozhentsky, D.P. Radoslavova. The origins of the formation of a long tradition of arranging separate cabinets for storing personal libraries of prominent representatives of medical science are considered. In different historical periods, there were personal cabinets of A.G. Bakherakht, Ya.V. Willie, D.I. Kashlakova, S.P. Botkin. The tradition continues to this day: in September 2022, the VMedA library solemnly accepted part of the personal book collection of Academician V.O. Samoilov, placed in a special cabinet, stylized as antique library furniture, which was taken care of by the students and followers of the scientist. Nowadays, the criteria and approaches to evaluating personal libraries are changing: the preservation of their integrity is of particular importance. There comes an understanding that the personal libraries of scientists are of particular interest for historical research: to study the biography, creative path, sources of intellectual development, the network of scientific communications of their owners, to reconstruct their personality and their fate. But only if the libraries are available for study in their entirety, without exceptions. Most of the collections turned out to be scattered in the fund without any hope of re-creation and reunification, at least virtual - in the form of bibliographic lists. Based on the foregoing, it was concluded that there are a number of problems in maintaining the collection unity of personal book collections, modern methods for solving these problems, including those based on the use of special library technologies, are proposed.

The article is devoted to the history of the collections acquisition of the Sverdlovsk Regional Universal Scientific Library named after V. G. Belinsky (SOUNB) in 1940 as a part of the study devoted to the history of the library collections formation. The efficiency of any library depends on the quality and quantity of the book collections, so the selection of documents is the main function of librarians throughout the entire period of the library existence. The author aims at tracing how approaches to the creation of collections have been changing for the space of work of the Library named after V. G. Belinsky. The purpose of the study is to present the history of the library through the collections acquisition. The task was to find documentary and statistical materials about the activities of librarians working with collections. The history of the acquisition is unstudied yet, therefore, official government documents, publications in the local periodical press and documents from the archive of SOUNB served as sources for research. For the first time, data revealed in the library archive are introduced into scientific circulation, and an attempt is made to recreate the history of the most important component of library activities – the acquisition of the largest library in the Middle Urals. Special attention is paid to the topic of obtaining the mandatory copy, opening the department for blind readers, creating an exchange stock, also the problems of current acquisition, preservation of book collections and lack of the necessary space for their placement are considered. To study the topic, the method of historical alignment of the chronological sequence of events has been applied.

The Berlin State Library—Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation probably suffered more from the vicissitudes of the twentieth century than any other German cultural institution. It experienced the destruction of the building and the evacuation and loss of collections. Like Berlin, it was divided after World War II and was reunited after Berlin was reunited. In 2018, the library marks a century since the establishment of the Prussian State Library. But the legacy of the past century remains. Significant collections are still held in Eastern European libraries and the library must undertake the restitution of books acquired directly or indirectly through Nazi persecution. This article draws upon resources written in German and English to present the story of an important library that was under duress for much of the twentieth century. It discusses the impact of different historical eras on the library as a cultural institution and on the documentary heritage embodied in the library's rich collections. Although problems caused by these events remain, with reunification and restoration, the library is once again serving international scholarship and preserving an important part of the world's documentary heritage.

Streszczenie:
The paper is written with the intention to point out the library material and sources from the Fine Arts and Collections of Small Printed and Documentary Materials of the Special Collections from the Library of Matica Srpska as a source for the study of cultural tourism in the cities and municipalities of Serbia. On the case of Užice with the surrounding, there are shown chances for the tourist affirmation of numerous city sites of the largest city of Western Serbia, as well as the role of libraries in this process. Special collections of BMS are purchased, cataloged and made available for the use of non-library materials on many Serbian and international places. Among the brochures, invitations, works of art and photo-graphs from the Library of Matica Srpska there are also those about the town of Užice with the surrounding area that are emphasized as an example of cooperation between the library and other organizations in order to promote the tourist potentials of municipalities and cities in Serbia. Numerous sources, on the one hand, show the richness of collections of the Library of Matica Srpska, and on the other, testify about Western Serbia as a region of exceptional beauty with rich cultural and historical heritage.

The digitization of dispersed collections offers the opportunity to do much more than simply image collections. The paper centres on major initiatives involving the British Library which are virtually reunifying significant collections dispersed around the world. Such virtual reconstruction of cultural heritage creates a different digital entity. The Codex Sinaiticus project has worked towards the July 2009 Web launch of the virtual reunification of all the leaves of one of the earliest extant Bibles. The approximately 400 leaves are physically located in St Catherine's Monastery, Mount Sinai, Leipzig University Library, the National Library of Russia, St Petersburg, and the British Library, London. The International Dunhuang Project is a very mature project that has been digitizing material from the Dunhuang caves and the Eastern Silk Road dispersed in London, Beijing, Dunhuang, St Petersburg, Berlin, Paris, Stockholm and Kyoto. These complex programmes have broad application to other cultural–historical projects, and some of the wider political, diplomatic and stewardship themes are developed.

To evaluate the current state of resource sharing and cooperative collection development, this paper examines the relationship between less commonly taught language collections (LCTL) and ILL services. The study examined multiple years of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s resource-sharing data. This paper provides a historical narrative for the multilingual collections, collection development strategies, reference services, and outreach initiatives that reinforce and strengthen scholarly communication and resource sharing among academic libraries. The paper concludes by examining the feasibility of aggregating, or concentrating, collections of difficult-to-acquire, low-use materials at institutions that can provide service at a regional and/or national level.

This article deals with the British Library's collections on Africa, and especially with its collection of private papers of India Office officials (with a particular focus on the twentieth century). The choice of India-related collections may seem surprising, but in fact these records contain much that is relevant to African history. In this article I am concerned not only to describe what is held at the British Library, but to discuss the historical construction of these collections. That is, how factors that might be thought mundane and pedestrian - decisions about the selection or destruction of records, and their preservation and arrangement - affect both the nature of archival holdings and the scholarship built upon them.
