Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the size of the audit firm and compliance with Section 404(b) on how audit fees change over time. Design/methodology/approach This study uses panel data and an OLS regression to examine the relationship between audit fee changes, firms’ size and Section 404(b) compliance. Findings Section 404(b)-compliant companies experience a larger change in audit fees if they are audited by Big 4 firms than second-tier firms. Second-tier audit firms increase the fees primarily for the companies which do not comply with Section 404(b). Practical implications Regulators have been concerned with the Big 4 fee premium for four decades. This study informs regulators that the Big 4 continue increasing their fees at a higher rate than second-tier firms for their Section 404(b)-compliant clients (even though recent research shows that second-tier firms have increased quality to match the Big 4). This suggests that the Big 4 fee premium increases for this subset of clients, adding to the regulatory concerns. Originality/value While prior research has established the existence of the Big 4 fee premium, little is known about how this premium changes over time. Prior research shows that audit fees increase when internal controls are weak; however, little is known about how Section 404(b) compliance (once control effectiveness is controlled) affects fee changes. This paper addresses these voids in research.

This study examines the accuracy and bias associated with the analysts' earnings forecasts of Taiwanese firms. Using the forecast data of individual analysts over 1991–1997 from the I/B/E/S database, we find that analysts' forecasts of earnings are generally more accurate than the predictions of a naïve forecasting model. However, this superiority seems to be largely confined to shorter forecast horizons. We also find that the analysts' earnings forecasts of Taiwanese firms are optimistically biased and that the bias depends on the nature of the earnings news. In addition, analysts' forecasts appear to be more accurate for larger firms and the bias also decreases with firm size. We find some variation in forecast accuracy and bias across industries but the overall results are not driven by any specific time period.

The present work analyzed the fire protection performances, char formation and heat release characteristics of the thin film intumescent fire protective coatings that incorporate the eggshell (ES) waste as a renewable flame retardant nano bio-based filler. The fire performances of the coatings were evaluated using Bunsen burner and cone calorimeter. The fire behaviors of the samples in the condensed phase were conducted in accordance with the ISO 5660-1 standard. On exposure, the samples B and D reinforced with 3.30 wt.% and 2.75 wt.% of ES nano bio-filler, respectively showed a significant reduction in total heat rate, promoting thicker and more uniform char layer in protecting the steel structural. As a result, ES nano bio-filler composition has shown to be efficient in fire protective performance of the intumescent coatings.

Abstract We investigated the effects of photosensitive system (positive and negative) and polymer structures on Cu migration under bias HAST test. The HAST condition is 130C for 85% RH. Bias condition is 2MV/m. We found that there is polyimide structure shows big effect is big effect of no big difference between negative photosensitivity and positive photosensitivity in photo sensensitive polyimides. Polyimide structure effects significant difference on Cu migration under bias HAST condition. Cu migration of soft polyimide seems better than that of rigid polyimide. From these results, we developed good reliable photosensitive polyimide B-sheet having fine pattern capability successfully.

Four naphthopyran derivatives, namely, 3,3-bis(naphthalen-1-yl)-3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran, C33H22O, NP1, 3,3-bis([1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran, C37H26O, NP2, 3,3-bis(4-phenoxyphenyl)-3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran, C37H26O2, NP3, and 3,3-bis(4-methoxy-2-methylphenyl)-3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran, C29H26O3, NP4, were synthesized and their photochromic properties investigated. NP1–NP4 exhibited good photochromism in different solutions and in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film under UV light irradiation. Solvatochromism and the electronic and steric effects of the substituent group on photochromism were analyzed and decolouration curves were found to fit a monoexponential kinetic decay in most cases. Single-crystal X-ray analysis of NP1 and NP2 revealed the structure–property relationships. Good fatigue resistance of NP1, both in solution and in the PMMA film, endows it with potential value for applications.

Purpose – There is plenty of individual-level evidence, based on the estimation of Mincerian equations, showing that better-educated individuals earn more. This is usually interpreted as a proof that education raises labour productivity. Some macroeconomists, analysing cross-country time series, also support the idea that the continuous expansion of education has contributed positively to growth. Surprisingly, most economists with an interest in human capital have neglected the level of the firm to study the education-productivity-wage nexus. And the few published works considering firm-level evidence are lacking a proper strategy to cope with the endogeneity problem inherent to the estimation production and wage functions. The purpose of this paper is to aim at providing estimates of the causal effect of education on productivity and wage labour costs. Design/methodology/approach – This paper taps into a rich, firm-level, Belgian panel database that contains information on productivity, labour cost and the workforce’s educational attainment to deliver estimates of the causal effect of education on productivity and wage/labour costs. Therefore, it exclusively resorts to within firm changes to deal with time-invariant heterogeneity bias. What is more, it addresses the risk of simultaneity bias (endogeneity of firms’ education-mix choices in the short run) using the structural approach suggested by Ackerberg et al. (2006), alongside more traditional system-GMM methods (Blundell and Bond, 1998) where lagged values of labour inputs are used as instruments. Findings – Results suggest that human capital, in particular larger shares of university-educated workers inside firms, translate into significantly higher firm-level labour productivity, and that labour costs are relatively well aligned on education-driven labour productivity differences. In other words, the authors find evidence that the Mincerian relationship between education and individual wages is driven by a strong positive link between education and firm-level productivity. Originality/value – Surprisingly, most economists with an interest in human capital have neglected the level of the firm to study the education-productivity-pay nexus. Other characteristics of the workforce, like gender or age have been much more investigated at the level of the firm by industrial or labour economists (Hellerstein et al., 1999; Aubert and Crépon, 2003; Hellerstein and Neumark, 2007; Vandenberghe, 2011a, b, 2012; Rigo et al., 2012; Dostie, 2011; van Ours and Stoeldraijer, 2011). At present, the small literature based on firm-level evidence provides some suggestive evidence of the link between education, productivity and pay at the level of firms. Examples are Hægeland and Klette (1999); Haltiwanger et al. (1999). Other notable papers examining a similar question are Galindo-Rueda and Haskel (2005), Prskawetz et al. (2007) and Turcotte and Whewell Rennison (2004). But, despite offering plausible and intuitive results, many of the above studies essentially rely on cross-sectional evidence and most of them do not tackle the two crucial aspects of the endogeneity problem affecting the estimation of production and wage functions (Griliches and Mairesse, 1995): first, heterogeneity bias (unobserved time-invariant determinants of firms’ productivity that may be correlated to the workforce structure) and second, simultaneity bias (endogeneity in input choice, in the short-run, that includes the workforce mix of the firm). While the authors know that labour productivity is highly heterogeneous across firms (Syverson, 2011), only Haltiwanger et al. (1999) control for firm level-unobservables using firm-fixed effects. The problem of simultaneity has also generally been overlooked. Certain short-term productivity shocks affecting the choice of labour inputs, can be anticipated by the firms and influence their employment decision and thus the workforce mix. Yet these shocks and the resulting decisions by firms’ manager are unobservable by the econometrician. Hægeland and Klette (1999) try to solve this problem by proxying productivity shocks with intermediate goods, but their methodology inspired by Levinsohn and Petrin (2003) suffers from serious identification issues due to collinearity between labour and intermediate goods (Ackerberg et al., 2006).

ABSTRACT Audit firms use information technology (IT) to improve audit quality, effectiveness, and efficiency. While audit IT has evolved over the past decade, limited guidance is available to assist practitioners in determining how IT can be used. Our research objectives are fourfold. First, we examine to what extent auditors use and assess the perceived importance of IT in their audits. Second, we look at different-sized firms to determine whether IT adoption and implementation decisions differ by firm size. Third, we investigate changes in auditors' use and perceived importance of IT over the past decade. Fourth, we examine whether IT has impacted the communication modes used by auditors when reviewing workpapers and fraud brainstorming. Overall, Big 4 auditors were not significantly more likely to use IT than non-Big 4 auditors, suggesting that the dominance of the Big 4 firms' use of IT has lessened. In fact, there are a few applications where non-Big 4 auditors appear to have taken the lead. In addition, our findings indicate that auditors have increased the use of all the IT applications we examined ten years ago. However, we find evidence that auditors may prefer to use even more IT in their audits than they are currently using. In 1975, the Broadway musical Chicago brought together a host of memes and myths, the gleefully subversive character of American musical comedy, the reckless glamor of the big-city newspaper, the mad decade of the 1920s, the work of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon—two of the greatest talents in the musical’s history—and the Wild West gangsterville that was the city of Chicago itself. The tale of a young woman who murders her departing lover and then tricks the jury into letting her off, Chicago seemed too blunt and cynical at first. Everyone agreed it was show biz at its brilliant best, yet the public still preferred A Chorus Line, with its cast of innocents and sentimental feeling. Nevertheless, the 1996 Chicago revival is now the longest-running American musical in history, and the movie version won the Best Picture Oscar. As this text looks back at Chicago’s various moving parts, including the original 1926 play that started it all, a sexy silent film directed by Cecil B. DeMille, a talkie remake with Ginger Rogers, the musical itself, and at last the movie of the musical, we see how the American theatre serves as a kind of alternative news medium, a town crier warning the public about the racy, devious interior contradictions of American society.

B-movie noir seemed to fly under the radar of the culture industry, uncontaminated by spectacle and big studio promotion; low economic value sometimes became high artistic value. Until the late 1940s, there was a stable marketplace for low-budget thrillers. By 1955 the B-picture industry that could support a production like Detour had ended, but a few films in the late 1950s prefigured the development of independently produced, low-budget thrillers that would appeal to the emerging market for art-cinema.

Renewable energy sources are increasingly coming into use. This notably counts for non-food based biomass sources, including those producing wood-based energy. A firm that (re-)directs activities to this area can potentially create value. The external and internal environment of the firm sets the outline for the value creation potential. Important in the value creation process are dynamic capabilities to alter resource bases. The authors show this with an example in the mature Finnish pulp and paper industry. A Delphi study helps to identify the main industry- and company-level factors that influence the forest-based energy sector, its value-creation potential, and the future roles of forest and energy companies in it. The results of a study on a power plant in The Netherlands shows how the economic value creation for a specific firm can be assessed. The plant is designed to “vaporize” biomass input, in our case so-called “B-wood,” to a bio-oil that can be used to generate Green Power. The economic value analysis draws upon a risk-oriented production unit positioning analysis that is modeled with multiple scenarios. The results show that innovative business models can fruitfully be identified with multiple experts in sophisticated Delphi rounds and dynamic resource-based approaches appear promising. The authors also find that bio-refinery production chains are economically feasible with relatively small production units with multiple applications. The chapter gives way to a management view that integrates resource-based and economic value perspectives on wood-based energy sources for firms. In that sense, it adds to the literature on value creation with innovative business models.

Abstract The Night Of August 29, 1964, was supposed to be a typical one at the Uptown Theater. Local radio personality Georgie Woods (“the guy with the goods”) emceed a rhythm and blues stage show, just as he had done many times before at the crumbling, cavernous arena squatting in the heart of the North Philadelphia ghetto. Headliners that evening included B. B. King and Gladys Knight and the Pips. It was a “big show,” recalled Woods, who was not only a popular disc jockey on one of the city’s two black-oriented radio stations, but also a civil rights activist and a leading voice of the black community. Suddenly, a telephone call came in from the city’s race-baiting chief of police, Frank Rizzo. Trouble was brewing a few blocks north of the Uptown, where a routine traffic stop was in the process of escalating into mob disorder. The police were rapidly losing control of the volatile situation. Rizzo, who nine months earlier had arrested Woods and threatened to run him out of town after the activist-deejay turned up in the midst of a racial disturbance, now begged for his assistance. Turning over command of the Uptown to his understudy, Woods disappeared into the night. “I was the only one in town who could talk to the people,” he recalled. “They believed what I said.”

Elektriksiz kaplamalar düşük maliyetli bir proses sunması ve pürüzlü ve karmaşık geometriye sahip parçalarda üniform bir film kalınlığa sahip sert yüzeyler sunması nedeniyle geniş bir uygulama alanına sahiptir. Bu yöntemle genellikle elektriksiz nikel kaplama olarak bilinen Ni-P ve Ni-B kaplamalar üretilmekte ve alternatif diğer kaplama türleri için de arayışlar devam etmektedir. Arayışa konu olan kaplama yapılarından biri de MgB2’dir. Fakat MgB2 kaplamalar genellikle elektriksiz kaplama yöntemleri dışında farklı daha pahalı yöntemlerle üretilmekte ve bu kaplamaların özellikle süper iletkenlik ve diyamanyetiklik özellikleri üzerinde araştırmalar yapılmaktadır. MgB2 kaplamaların elektriksiz kaplama yöntemiyle üretilmesine yönelik çalışmaların sayısı yok denecek kadar azdır.
Bu çalışmada, elektriksiz kaplama yöntemi kullanılarak AISI 1020 çelik taban malzemeler üzerinde 95°C'lik bir banyo sıcaklığında takviyesiz olarak MgB2 kaplama seramik kaplama ve 5, 10 ve 15 g/l SiO2 nanopartikül miktarlarında takviyeli olarak MgB2/SiO2 kompozit kaplamalar üretilmiştir. Üretilen kaplamaların yapısal ve ıslanabilirlik karakteri, mekanik ve sürtünme davranışı araştırılarak, MgB2 kaplamalara eklenen SiO2 takviyelerinin bu özellikler üzerindeki etkileri değerlendirilmiştir. SiO2 takviyeli MgB2/SiO2 kompozit kaplamalarda, artan SiO2 takviye miktarı, kristalografik anlamda kaplamalarda amorflaştırma yönünde bir etkisi olduğu, sertliği artırırken ve sürtünme katsayısında bir azalmaya sebep olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Ayrıca üretilen takviyesiz ve takviyeli kaplamaların süperhidrofilik karakterde olduğu tespit edilirken, her iki durumda da süperhidrofilik yapı elde edildiğinden dolayı, SiO2 takviyesinin ıslanma açısına bariz bir etkisinin olup olmadığı net olarak tespit edilememiştir. Fakat çelik taban malzeme ile kaplanmış yüzeyler bakımından bir kıyaslama yapıldığında, sürtünme katsayısındaki azalma ile düşük temas açısı birbirlerini destekleyici niteliktedir.

Abstract In Late 1975, Philadelphia International was temporarily invigorated by the O’Jays’ Family Reunion album and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes’ Wake Up Everybody album. The title of the O’Jays album could have been an oblique nod to Kenny Gamble’s return to the Philadelphia International fold. The title of the Blue Notes album should have been heeded as a warning that, whatever the pending outcome of Project Sound, Philadelphia International could not survive indefinitely in its current depleted state. Former members of Lebaron Taylor’s Young Professionals, as well as another local writer/ arranger, Richard Rome, provided spirited competition in local R&B circles. Following Vince Montana’s Salsoul Orchestra blueprint, Rome (who was occasionally employed by Philadelphia International), rounded up the same personnel Montana used, right down to vocalists Barbara Ingram, Carla Benson, and Evette Benton, and created and produced a studio disco group that, in self-homage, he dubbed the Ritchie Family. Rome’s one-off lark resulted in a surprise hit album, Brazil. (When the Sigma Sweethearts refused to leave the recording studio to promote the album, lest they forfeit their now-multitudinous vocal backing sessions, Rome had to scurry to recruit three females to take their place on the road.) By then, Philadelphia was also a magnet for a myriad of competing artists and producers, from both near and far. Most people in the music business “are followers,” said Thom Bell. “So if there’s a great sound coming from Jumpville, Georgia, they’re gonna send their man to get that sound.” In the mid-197os, “Jumpville, Georgia” was Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Those unwilling to pay Gamble and Huff’s top-line production fee “would come to people like us,” said Morris Bailey. “We knew how to get the Philadelphia sound, it’s nothin’ to get! That kept us busy. We were able to pay our rent, buy a couple [of] houses. Nothin’ big like Kenny, but we were able to make a living.

This chapter highlights the author’s view that building a systematic program of research is imperative in the journey toward influential scholarship. It shares the approaches that the author has learned and used in the process of building her systematic program of research. This research program centers around identifying key antecedents and consequences of creativity and innovation. The approaches shared in the chapter include choosing a nascent research field, enjoying the observation of workplace phenomena, reading widely and diversely, questioning commonly held assumptions, and designing projects that connect with the big picture. The author recounts how she relied on these approaches to (a) examining the interplay between the actor and the context in affecting the actor’s creativity, which resulted in a new typology; (b) developing the dual-tuning perspective on affect and creativity; (c) investigating how employee creativity leads to firm innovation and performance; and (d) creating a framework for understanding the receiving side of creativity. The chapter concludes with reflections on how to conduct impactful research by building a systematic program of inquiry.

Abstract Japanese business has attracted a great deal of attention from social scientists, but almost all of it has been directed toward big firms, keiretsu, and cooperative alliances. Little attention has been paid to small firms, even though they are critical to the Japanese economy. In Japan, a much higher proportion of firms is in the under-100 and under-20 employee size categories than in the United States or most Western European nations. Using a very generous definition of “small:’ Takaoka (1989) argued that 99.4 percent of all Japanese businesses are small, employing about 60 percent of the workforce. He defined “small” for each of three sectors: (a) manufacturing: an incorporated company whose capital is no more than 100 mil lion yen or with fewer than 300 employees, or a sole proprietorship with fewer than 300 employees; (b) wholesale: an incorporated company whose capital is no more than 30 million yen, or a sole proprietorship with fewer than 100 employees; and (c) retail and service: an incorporated company whose capital is less than 10 million yen, or a sole proprietorship with fewer than fifty employees (Takaoka, 1989), Miwa (1993) also noted that the proportion of establishments in the private sector (not including agriculture and fisheries) that are small has remained very stable over the past thirty or forty years.

Abstract From the end of 1965 until the end of 1967 the war in Vietnam became more and more of an American affair. At the beginning of 1965 the United States stationed 23,000 troops in Vietnam. A year later the number was 184,000, rising to 385,000 at the end of the year and 535,000 by the beginning of 1968. Although the United States preferred conventional “big unit” confrontations with the NLF and the North Vietnamese, the enemy decided when to engage the Americans and ARVN forces, thereby limiting their own casualties until the time they expected the Americans would weary of the war. General William C. Westmoreland, the U.S. commander, tried unsuccessfully to counter these tactics with an attrition strategy of his own. He sent giant B-52 bombers and smaller fighter bombers over South Vietnam to terrorize the Vietcong. After the bombers had prepared the battlefield, helicopter-borne American units descended on the countryside on search-and-destroy missions to root out and kill enemy soldiers. Americans would fly out from their bases in the morning, pursue the Vietcong or North Vietnamese in fire fights, and return to bases in the evening. The tokens of progress in the war became the “body count” of soldiers killed, rather than territory captured or decapitation of the enemy’s command and control structure. Westmoreland adopted the procedure because it seemed to provide the quantifiable data that McNamara insisted upon.

This study measures the sustainable performance of ten car manufacturers operating in the U.S. We took into account three dimensions of sustainability: (a) economic, (b) environmental, and (c) social. Our methodology drew on the generalized directional distance function data envelopment analysis in conjunction with the multi-parametric method for bias correction of efficiency estimators. The combination of the two methods reduced the bias of efficiency estimators, which was sourced from the dimensionality of the production set and the sample size. Our analysis revealed that Chrysler-Fiat, GM, and Ford have the worst sustainable performance among firms under review over the years 2014–2018.

As atividades profissionais de Gerenciamento de Facilidades (Facility Management - FM) demandam diversas ferramentas technológicas, úteis para auxiliar a tarefas rotineiras à tomadas de decisão. Estudos anteriores revelam que as tecnologias foram absorvidas, ao longo do tempo, pelo mercado. Atualmente, quais são as tecnologias aplicadas ao setor de FM? Além disso, qual tecnologia tem maior número de estudos na abordagem estabelecida na pesquisa? Existe oportunidade para desenvolvimento de soluções integradas com duas ou mais tecnologias? Uma revisão sistemática de literatura foi realizada, com recorte temporal de 5 anos, para identificação dos estudos recentes sobre tecnologias aplicadas à fase de operação e manutenção no ambiente construído. Os 74 artigos completos, em inglês, sobre o tema resultantes da revisão sistemática foram analisados quanto ao ano de publicação, bases de dados, periódicos, distribuição geográfica, principais autores e palavras-chaves recorrentes. Por fim, na discussão as novas tecnologias em FM são tratadas: (a) Modelagem de Informação da Construção - BIM; (b) Sistema de Informação Geográfica - GIS; (c) Sistemas Ciber-físicos - CPS; (d) Big Data; (e) Realidade Virtual; (f) Realidade Aumentada; (g) Internet das Coisas - IoT; e (h) Identificação por Rádio Frequência – RFID.

Polymeric adhesives are popular in the application to electronic or optoelectronic packaging for die attaching, underfilling or interconnection. Their residual strains or stresses (induced by temperature, moisture, and curing shrinkage) and moisture diffusion coefficients have to be determined and cooperated into the package design for better reliability. The purpose of this study is to propose an approach for quantifying adhesive moisture diffusion coefficients and residual strains due to chemical shrinkage, stress relaxation and temperature- and moisture-loading. This approach feature testing fully-cured adhesive/silicon bi-material plates under thermal and moisture loading using Twyman-Green (T/G) interferometry system plus analyses with Timoshenko’s bi-material theory and finite element method (FEM). Three types of adhesives: paste adhesive, film adhesives A and B have been tested for illustrating the approach. The results suggest that the residual strains for the paste adhesive are only induced by CTE mismatch during thermal loading, rather than other factors, after the cured paste adhesive being cooled down to room temperature. On the other hand, the film adhesive A was found to have the additional residual strain caused by chemical shrinkage plus stress relaxation, besides thermal one, is about 2.26×10−3, which accounts for 85% of thermal strains, after the bi-material plate being cooled down to room temperature. Through moisture diffusion test, the average of the coefficients of moisture diffusion and saturated hygro-strains of the film adhesive B under 30°C/85%RH are obtained to be 1.09 × 10−6 mm2/s and 1.51 × 10−3, respectively. From the aforementioned results, it has been demonstrated that this method with a combination of experimental data and analytical tools can be able to determine the residual strains and moisture diffusion coefficients of the cured film or paste adhesives.

A fase de operação e manutenção é a mais extensa do ciclo de vida de uma edificação e representa mais de 85% dos custos totais. O BIM/FM tem potencial aplicabilidade e benefícios, com espaço para exploração dos requisitos para futuras implementações bem-sucedidas. Nesse contexto, a pesquisa visa mapear as oportunidades e desafios do BIM/FM. A metodologia utilizada foi a Webibliomining, composta por 7 etapas: (a) escolha das bases; (b) busca preliminar de bases de dados; (c) refinamento da busca de bases de dados; (d) verificação das bases de dados quanto à exportação de informações de artigos; (e) seleção e exportação; (f) uso de software; e (g) leitura de títulos e resumos. Como resultado, foi obtido 225 artigos científicos completos, em língua inglesa (etapa f) e posteriormente 33 artigos científicos que efetivamente tratam de BIM/FM (etapa g). Por fim, a discussão foi apresentada com foco em 16 artigos (Parte I), sob os subtemas implementação de BIM/FM, comparação / indicadores de performance, e integração com outras tecnologias.

BIM pode ser entendido como um conjunto inter-relacionado de processos, políticas e tecnologias que gerenciam a informação em todo o ciclo de vida da edificação (SUCCAR, 2009). Com a publicação de decretos e de normas que visam a incentivar e regulamentar o uso de BIM na construção civil, as universidades perceberam a urgência na implementação de BIM nas suas respectivas grades curriculares a fim de capacitarem os futuros profissionais conforme as necessidades do mercado de trabalho. Frente a isso, o Ministério da Economia em conjunto com a Associação Nacional de Tecnologia do Ambiente Construído – ANTAC, estão coordenando a rede de Células BIM, cujo objetivo é criar instrumentos pedagógicos para a difusão do BIM no ambiente acadêmico. O Centro Universitário Facens, que visa a formar profissionais capacitados conforme as tendências atuais do mercado, é uma das instituições que formam este grupo. O curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo do Centro Universitário Facens é um curso que desde o seu início se preocupa com o uso da tecnologia tanto na grade curricular das disciplinas, quanto durante a ministração das aulas, a partir de metodologias ativas. O presente relatório tem como objetivo demonstrar os resultados do diagnóstico BIM na matriz curricular do curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo do Centro Universitário Facens, através do mapeamento do potencial de interface com BIM em todos os componentes curriculares do curso.
O método utilizado para o diagnóstico da matriz curricular foi desenvolvido por Checucci (2014), adaptado e apresentado nas reuniões de Células BIM. O processo ocorreu a partir de análise documental e categorial de cada componente curricular do curso, avaliados e classificados de acordo com 8 categorias relacionadas ao BIM. Os resultados foram identificados em caixas individuais que representam cada uma das disciplinas, que no conjunto formam a matriz. Cada caixa de análise possui o nome da disciplina no centro e ao redor, as 8 categorias, além da carga horária da disciplina na primeira linha. Os procedimentos utilizados foram: i. Classificação dos componentes curriculares conforme a Resolução nº 1, de 26 de março de 2021 do MEC (MEC, 2021); ii. Relação entre o componente curricular e BIM; iii. Avaliação da interface dos usos do modelo BIM com as disciplinas (Categoria B); iv. Análise da interface das competências BIM de domínio técnico ou de execução nas disciplinas (Categoria C); v. Análise da interface dos estágios da implementação BIM nas disciplinas (Categoria D); vi. Potencial de integração da disciplina (Categoria E); vii. Identificação da interface quanto às etapas do ciclo de vida da edificação (Categoria F); viii. Classificação da disciplina conforme a área de formação (Categoria G); ix. Verificação da possibilidade do trabalho/discussão de BIM na disciplina (Categoria H).
Os resultados do diagnóstico BIM na matriz curricular do curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo do Centro Universitário Facens demonstrou que 67% das disciplinas do curso possuem clara interface com BIM, 22% possível interface e apenas 11% das disciplinas não possuem interface com BIM. Na análise geral das categorias, constatou-se que o modelo BIM pode ser utilizado principalmente na visualização, seguido de parametrização e orientação a objetos (Categoria B). O uso prático do modelo (Categoria C) não acontece em todas as disciplinas. A modelagem, colaboração e integração (Categoria D) são possíveis de se trabalhar na maioria das disciplinas. A integração com disciplinas/alunos do mesmo semestre (Categoria E) ocorre com maior frequência, entretanto entre diferentes cursos ou outros semestres a possibilidade de integração é menor. Na Categoria F, a maior interface ocorre na etapa de projetação, não havendo nenhuma na etapa de planejamento da construção, e reduzidas interfaces na construção, uso e fim-de-vida. O modelo BIM é trabalhado de maneira mais prática (Categoria H) nas disciplinas, sendo também trabalhado os conceitos em algumas destas. Foi possível verificar uma clara interface principalmente nas disciplinas de projeto de arquitetura e urbanismo, projeto de urbanismo, projeto de paisagismo, projeto de conservação e restauro, design de interiores e trabalho final de graduação; nestas houve uma clara interface na grande maioria das categorias. As disciplinas de desenho digital e arquitetura digital são voltadas principalmente ao ensino tanto conceitual quanto prático de BIM, nestas a maioria das subcategorias de BIM também são de clara interface. As disciplinas de sistemas estruturais, conforto e teoria e história também foram classificadas como de clara interface, sendo possível o uso de BIM para visualização, manipulação do modelo, colaboração e simulação. O mapeamento do potencial de interface com BIM em todos os componentes curriculares do curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Facens é uma etapa importante compreender as potenciais aplicações BIM nas disciplinas. Como ações futuras, espera-se planejar e executar ações a fim de implementar os resultados apresentados neste relatório.

Este trabalho apresenta parte dos resultados de um amplo conjunto de ações desenvolvidas pela Célula BIM UFPE. As células BIM são resultado de um edital lançado pelo Ministério da Economia que apresentava como uma de suas sub-metas a “Proposta e instalação de Célula BIM em Instituição de Ensino Superior (IES) visando estimular o desenvolvimento e aplicação de novas tecnologias relacionadas ao Building Information Modeling (BIM)” (BRASIL. Ministério da Economia, 2019). O BIM pode ser descrito como um conjunto de políticas, processos e tecnologias que visam produzir, comunicar e analisar a informação da construção, ao longo do seu ciclo de vida. Está relacionado a uma nova forma de pensar e desenvolver projetos de Arquitetura e Engenharia. Sendo a representação da expressão da inovação na indústria da construção civil, as Células BIM aparecem com um papel fundamental de desenvolvimento de estratégias para a adoção das competências BIM nos cursos de graduação da área. Visando a adequada incorporação dos conteúdos BIM nestes cursos alguns autores (DELATORRE, 2014) sugerem que é necessária uma série de ações preliminares. Este artigo tem por objetivo descrever o desenvolvimento de uma dessas ações: a avaliação do grau de maturidade BIM no curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE). De maneira geral, o termo maturidade pode ser compreendido como a extensão, a profundidade, a qualidade, a previsibilidade e a repetibilidade de uma habilidade na realização de uma tarefa ou entrega de um serviço ou produto. Segundo Succar (2009), na área do BIM, o conceito de maturidade serve para identificar um conjunto de melhorias de processos que permitam alcançar benefícios específicos, proporcionando uma melhor percepção do crescimento e da diversidade de aplicação do BIM. Nesse sentido, aferir o grau de maturidade é tarefa indispensável para direcionar a criação de ações estratégicas na implementação do BIM nos cursos de graduação. A metodologia de avaliação da maturidade BIM segue a matriz estabelecida por Boes, Barros, Lima (2021). Nela, o processo de investigação está dividido em três: 1) Políticas: compreende as iniciativas, ações e visões institucionais sobre BIM; 2)Processos: avalia o desempenho do ensino, pesquisa e extensão em BIM; e 3) Tecnologias: compreende o conjunto de softwares, hardwares e sistemas necessários para a utilização do BIM. Esses campos englobam 16 capacidades que determinam o grau de maturidade BIM da IES em cinco diferentes níveis: Pré-BIM, Inicial, Definido, Integrado e Otimizado. A coleta das informações para o preenchimento desta matriz foi feita através de questionários aplicados: (a) ao corpo docente; (b) aos professores que formam o NDE (Núcleo docente estruturador); (c) ao coordenador do curso; e (d) aos coordenadores dos laboratórios de tecnologia que os estudantes do curso têm acesso. Para cada um desses grupos foi elaborado um questionário específico que captasse informações acerca das ações relativas a políticas, aos processos e às tecnologias que envolvem o ensino do BIM. A avaliação do grau de maturidade BIM mostra que o curso em questão está ingressando no estágio DEFINIDO de incorporação do BIM com MÉDIA MATURIDADE. Isso significa que o envolvimento com BIM neste curso já foi iniciado e está em processo de definição. Em relação ao eixo de Políticas, o desempenho do curso oscila entre inicial e definido. A classificação inicial foi verificada em relação a dois critérios: (a) o conhecimento sobre o Decreto Federal 9.337:2018, onde a maioria dos docentes dizem conhecer, mesmo que alguns não saibam do que se trata; (b) a baixa capacitação e engajamento BIM do corpo docente (não há incentivo formal por parte da coordenação e menos de 10% do corpo docente domina a tecnologia). O eixo de processos também não apresentou uma uniformidade. O que mais levanta o grau de Maturidade BIM neste eixo são os pontos relativos aos critérios de publicações e número de alunos capacitados. Verifica-se uma constância anual de publicação em um congresso internacional da área desde 2014, além de publicações eventuais em revistas. O alto número de alunos capacitados se deve ao fato de que desde 2012 é ministrada semestralmente uma ou duas disciplinas, além de cursos de extensão. Por fim, o eixo de tecnologia é o que apresenta uma maior uniformidade de pontuação. Com exceção do quesito sobre os “acordos institucionais com fabricantes de hardware”, que é praticamente inexistente, todos os demais apresentam um estado Inicial de Maturidade BIM. A avaliação geral da matriz também destaca dois pontos. Primeiro, são verificados desempenhos distintos em relação aos três eixos apresentados: enquanto as ações verificadas nos de políticas e processos estão mais bem desenvolvidas, o eixo de tecnologias é o que precisa de um incentivo maior para que o curso seja classificado com o grau Integrado de Maturidade. Segundo, esse resultado se deve a ações realizadas por menos de 10% dos professores, conforme indica a análise estatística das respostas aos questionários. Isso significa que o grau definido não reflete a maturidade “do corpo docente” do curso, e sim, de um grande esforço de uma pequena parte de professores. Sendo assim, apresentar estágio DEFINIDO de incorporação BIM com MÉDIO GRAU DE MATURIDADE é muito positivo, mostrando que o curso, de maneira geral, apresenta interfaces capazes de facilitar a inserção mais planejada do conteúdo. Isso significa que os esforços não vão partir do zero e encontram um ambiente relativamente preparado para uma inserção melhor estruturada e, futuramente, para uma definitiva consolidação do tema.

Compatible with the external contour of the turbine airfoils at their leading edge, the leading-edge cooling cavities have a complex cross-sectional shape. To enhance the heat transfer coefficient on the leading-edge wall of these cavities, the cooling flow in some designs enters the leading-edge cavity from the adjacent cavity through a series of crossover holes on the partition wall between the two cavities. The crossover jets then impinge on the concave leading-edge wall and exit through the showerhead film holes, gill film holes on the pressure and suction sides, and, in some cases, form a crossflow in the leading-edge cavity and move toward the airfoil tip. The main objective of this investigation was to study the effects that racetrack crossover jets, in the presence of film holes on the target surface, have on the impingement heat transfer coefficient. Available data in open literature are mostly for impingement on a flat smooth surface with no representation of the film holes. This investigation covered new features in airfoil leading-edge cooling concept such as impingement with racetrack shaped holes on a roughened target surface with a row of holes representing the leading-edge showerhead film holes. Results of the circular crossover jets impinging on these leading-edge surface geometries with and without showerhead holes were reported by these authors previously. In this paper, however, the experimental results are presented for the impingement of racetrack-shaped crossover jets on a concave surface with showerhead film holes. The investigated target surface geometries were : (1) a smooth wall, (2) a wall roughened with big conical bumps, (3) a wall roughened with smaller conical bumps and (4) a wall roughened with tapered radial ribs. The tests were run for a range of flow arrangements and jet Reynolds numbers and the results were compared with those of round crossover jets. The major conclusions of this study are: (a) for a given jet Reynolds number, the racetrack crossover jets produce a higher impingement heat transfer coefficient than the circular jets, (b) the overall heat transfer performance of 0° racetrack crossover jets is superior to that of 45° racetrack crossover jets and (c) there is a heat transfer enhancement benefit in roughening the target surface. With the presence of showerhead holes, the enhancement is due to both the impingement heat transfer coefficient and the heat transfer area increase.

Este trabalho versa sobre os caminhos percorridos pela Célula BIM FAU/UFJF, vinculada ao curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (CAU) da Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (FAU) da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF). Partiu-se da seguinte questão: como tem-se estruturado a Célula BIM FAU/UFJF e quais têm sido suas potencialidades em impactar a implementação do building information modeling (BIM) na FAU/UFJF? Tendo como base o panorama realizado, a partir de uma pesquisa descritiva e de uma reflexão crítica sobre a presença da Célula BIM na FAU/UFJF, são apresentadas as ações desenvolvidas, que levaram em conta as especificidades e as demandas da Célula BIM FAU/UFJF, para além daquelas que estão em consonância com as proposições da Rede de Células BIM ANTAC, como os diagnósticos de maturidade e de permeabilidade BIM na matriz curricular do CAU/UFJF. Desse modo, o objetivo geral deste trabalho é evidenciar a trajetória da referida célula para promover um ambiente propício para a implementação da tecnologia BIM no CAU/UFJF.
As ações desenvolvidas pela Célula BIM FAU/UFJF compreenderam, até o momento, atividades de pesquisa e extensão, bem como de planejamento, capacitação e divulgação da própria célula. Essas ações estão diretamente vinculadas aos objetivos geral e específicos da célula e permeiam os aspectos processuais, tecnológicos e políticos do BIM. Ao se olhar para a linha do tempo das ações já desenvolvidas, pode-se destacar que: (a) a capacitação do grupo tem se dado, desde o início, por meio da realização de cursos da Plataforma BIM BR, entre outras, e se mantido, na medida do possível, de forma continuada; (b) em relação à pesquisa, têm sido desenvolvidas duas investigações, sendo uma de iniciação científica e outra de mestrado, dentro do Laboratório de Estudos das Linguagens e Expressões na Arquitetura, no Urbanismo e no Design (LEAUD/CNPq), vinculado à FAU/UFJF e ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ambiente Construído (PROAC/UFJF), respectivamente com subsídios da UFJF e financiamento da FAPEMIG, intituladas “Impacto da Rede Célula BIM no ensino da modelagem da informação da construção nos cursos de Engenharia Civil e Arquitetura e Urbanismo no Brasil” e “Possibilidades e limitações da implementação da modelagem da informação da construção (BIM) no curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora”; (c) no âmbido da extensão, foi realizada a “I SEMANA CÉLULA BIM FAU/UFJF: o BIM para arquitetos”, que contou com a presença de convidados que atuam no mercado e no meio acadêmico, e que possibilitou a difusão de assuntos metodológicos e conceituais do BIM. Entre as pautas abordadas, uma foi unanimidade em todos os dias: “como o paradigma BIM pode ajudar a sociedade?” Por meio de uma proposição da própria Célula BIM, cada convidado apresentou diferentes perspectivas e experiências pessoais e profissionais para a questão supracitada. Também foi realizada uma oficina sobre o BIM (sem a utilização de recursos informáticos) durante a Semana do Calouro da FAU/UFJF, no primeiro semestre de 2023 (a qual se repetirá no início do segundo semestre). Vale mencionar que essa oficina atingiu os estudantes recém-chegados no curso, criando uma base para a comunidade acadêmica sobre o BIM antes mesmo de os calouros tomarem contato com os softwares, ação que corrobora a aprendizagem e a difusão da metodologia como preparatória para a posterior lida com os softwares BIM. Por fim, (d) para a divulgação da própria Célula BIM FAU/UFJF quanto das suas atividades nos meios de comunicação, foram criados dois canais: (1) webpage da célula, hospedada no site do CAU/FAU/UFJF (ver https://www.ufjf.br/arquitetura/oportunidades/celula-bim-fauufjf/) e (2) um perfil no Instagram, @celulabim.fauufjf (ver https://www.instagram.com/celulabim.fauufjf/).
Como se pode notar, os trabalhos da Célula BIM FAU/UFJF ainda estão voltados para a disseminação conceitual, metodológica e comportamental do BIM. A fim de criar um ambiente propício para uma implementação do BIM na FAU/UFJF, optou-se pelas ações de pesquisa e extensão em detrimento de ações predominantemente de ensino. Ao se analisar o contexto da FAU/UFJF, verificou-se a demanda por um processo de conscientização sobre a relevância do BIM na contemporaneidade, seus aspectos processuais e políticos, e a desconstrução de uma visão meramente tecnológica. Inclusive, é dado a esse diagnóstico que as ações de ensino ainda não foram iniciadas, para que o BIM não fosse assimilado somente como o uso de softwares, tais como Revit e ArchiCAD, causando a repulsa decorrentes dos preconceitos daqueles menos entusiastas em relação à incorporação das tecnologias de informação e comunicação nas diversas áreas da Arquitetura e do Urbanismo. Havia uma demanda por ações que pudessem promover uma transformação comportamental dos discentes e docentes, para, posteriormente, haver o terreno bem pavimentado propício para o desenvolvimento de uma implementação abrangente do BIM. Porém, agora, já são vislumbradas ações de ensino, como minicursos e oficinas, voltados para toda a comunidade interna da FAU. Verifica-se, também, a necessidade por ações de recrutamento de discentes, docentes e TAEs, uma vez que a adesão voluntária para a composição da Célula BIM FAU/UFJF e o engajamento nas atividades propostas ainda percebem-se aquém do desejado e do necessário para uma verdadeira implementação do BIM. De todo modo, deve-se destacar que, aos poucos, a Célula BIM FAU/UFJF, com um pouco mais de um ano de existência, vem dando sua contribuição e marcando a presença na difusão local do BIM. Cabe, ainda, ressaltar que, com as ações já desenvolvidas pela Célula BIM FAU/UFJF, espera-se que, em curto prazo, o curso capaz de implantar uma disciplina piloto, que contribua para uma efetiva implementação do BIM na FAU/UFJF.

Duty drawback schemes, which typically involve a combination of duty rebates and exemptions, are a feature of many countries' trade regimes. They are used in highly protected, developing economies as means of providing exporters with imported inputs at world prices, and thus increasing their competitiveness, while maintaining the protection on the rest of the economy. In China duty exemptions have been central to the process of trade reform and have led to a tremendous increase in processed exports utilizing imported materials. Despite the widespread use and importance of duty drawbacks, these "new trade liberalization" instruments have been given relatively little attention in empirical multilateral trade liberalization studies. This paper presents an empirical multi-region trade model GTAP-DD, an extension of GTAP, in which the effects of policy reform are differentiated based on the trade-orientation of the firms. Both GTAP and GTAP-DD are used to analyze the impact of China's WTO accession, which involves liberalization in China from 1997 to post-accession tariffs among a number of other liberalization measures. The analysis shows that failure to account of duty exemptions in the case of China's recent WTO accession will overstate the increase in : (a) China's trade flows by 40 percent, (b) China's welfare by 15 percent, and (c) exports of selected sectors by as much as 90 percent. The magnitude of the bias depends on the level of pre-intervention tariffs and the size of tariff cuts - the larger the initial distortions and tariff reductions, the larger the bias when duty drawbacks are ignored. The bias in GTAP's estimates of China's real GDP, trade flows and welfare changes due to WTO accession increases more three times when China's pre-intervention tariffs are raised from their 1997 levels to the much higher 1995 levels. These results suggest that trade liberalization studies focusing on economies in which protection is high, import concessions play an important role and planned tariff cuts are deep, must treat duty drawbacks explicitly in order to avoid serious errors in their estimates of sectoral, trade flows and welfare changes.
