The purpose of the study is to establish and formalize current trends in the construction and formation of international transport systems. In this regard, first of all, the definition of international transport systems is given. In modern conditions, the formation and development of national transport systems is largely determined by the focus on international transport and economic relations, and the possibility of attracting international transit cargo flows to the transport system of countries. In this paper, all systems of existing transport corridors, Euro-Asian transport directions, transport of regions of economic cooperation and existing agreements on international routes and lines on different types of transport are considered in the axiomatic of their classification as international transport systems. A retrospective analysis of the development of international transport systems, their transformation and conversion in the process of evolution is given. In conclusion, the paper provides recommendations on the need for further research related to the theoretical and conceptual justification of trends in the formation of international transport systems, the study of legal support for their functioning, modeling the interaction of different types of transport, the prospects for their development, the possible assessment of efficiency and other issues related to thisproblem.

The article presents the author's approach to building a gnoseological model of project management research from a system approach. The aim of the article is to form the conceptual principles of the theoretical and methodological basis for the analysis of project management processes based on axiomatic conditions of consistency. The methodological basis of the research was the theses of classical and modern economic theory and the research work of domestic and foreign scientists on project management issues. The author's methodological concept is based on the unification, within a systematic paradigm, of the Marxist school of political economy and the principles of the institutional trend. The basic hypothesis of the research was the assumption that it is possible and expedient to use a descriptive methodology for identifying systems to requests for managing investment projects as open systems. Statement of the basic material. Methodological analysis has shown that the system is an integrity which is capable of self-development, formed by a sufficient set of elements that are able to reproduce themselves and function relatively independently, united by a network of significant structural, genetic and subordinate links. In the analysis of investment projects, the content of these links is presented through the investment legal relationship. From the point of view of the system paradigm, an investment project can be regarded as an organisational, financial and technically conditioned integrity, formed by a sufficient set of elements (property, property rights and other values) capable of self-reproduction and united by an investment legal relationship that establishes structural and subordinate relationships. It has been proved that the circulation area is a necessary and sufficient condition for the integrity of investment projects, transforms individual capital into public capital and ensures its circulation and reproduction. Also, the axiomatic condition of unity for investment systems is implemented through a set of formal and informal rules (laws) of composition. Originality and practical relevance of the research. The theoretical and methodological concept has theoretical significance and can be transformed into an appropriate applied toolkit for developing scientific and practical recommendations for project management. Conclusions and prospects for further research. The conceptual theoretical and methodological basis for the analysis of project management processes based on axiomatic conditions of consistency allows us to define the system triad of an investment project and formally identify the basic system components. Further research will focus on the development of instrumental and methodological support for project management.

Use of the system approach to management of social and economic processes is connected with existence of the immanent contradiction caused by a high level of abstraction of the definition "system" and a considerable level of concreteness of real economic tasks. The mentioned thesis needs formalization of descriptors of socio-economic systems and identification of basic management contours. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the necessity of using a systematic approach to the construction of the socio-economic system construct based on the identification of relevant descriptors and management contours. The methodological basis of the study was a combination of the Marxist school of political economy, the modern economic mainstream and unorthodox currents within the systemic paradigm. The main hypothesis of the study was the assumption regarding the possibility and feasibility of using descriptive methodology of systems identification to the needs of management of socio-economic systems. Statement of the basic material. On the basis of the analysis, a certain basis is provided for the formation of correlations of correspondence of the descriptors of the national socio-economic system to the corresponding axiomatic conditions and basic components. It is proved that the dualistic understanding of the individual as an economic and institutional basic element of the socio-economic system is fully appropriate to the understanding of the essence of the national economy. Institutions should be seen as a structure of connections that combine the elements into a unified integrity. It is proved that the state and its institutions play a dialectical role in ensuring the integral existence of the national socio-economic system of market type. Originality and practical significance of the research. The resulting theoretical and methodological concept has theoretical significance and can be transformed into relevant tools for the development of scientific and practical recommendations on the management of socio-economic systems. Conclusions and prospects for further research. The results of generalization of theoretical statements on the essence and content of the definitions of "socio-economic system" and "national economy" led to the conclusion about the impossibility of considering the economic subsystem (national economy) separately from other subsystems. The expediency and sufficiency of the use of the definition "national socio-economic system" as more acceptable for solving the dialectical unity of social and economic subsystems of society was proved. Further research will focus on the development of the methodical support for the identification of management contours on the basis of socio-economic descriptors

Smart specialisation has become a popular approach to the strategic management of the innovative development of regional/national economies. However, there is no consensus in scientific circles on the theoretical origin of the concept of smart specialisation. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to analyze the influence of economic development theories on the formation of the theoretical basis of the concept of smart specialisation. It is established that the concept of smart specialisation is based on the definitions, patterns, and main factors of economic development defined by traditional economic schools. To form a systematized scientific knowledge about smart specialisation, the study focuses on modern economic theories that consider the possibilities of ensuring the development of economies based on knowledge and innovation. The article analyses the provisions of the theories of structural transformations, endogenous growth, evolutionary economics, agglomerations, innovative ecosystems and clusters, which are identified as the main ones that are related to and substantiate the ideas of smart specialisation. The most significant provisions of these theories from the point of view of forming the theoretical foundations of smart specialisation are highlighted. Based on the results of the conceptual analysis of the works of evolutionists, the author summarises the classes of industries by the organisation of innovation activity, indicating the peculiarities of innovation production depending on the sectoral affiliation of the participants involved in this process. The author emphasizes the coherence between the concept of smart specialisation and the theory of innovation ecosystems, which, unlike the concept of innovation systems, is more focused on creating conditions for productive collaboration of regional stakeholders in the process of entrepreneurial discovery. It is concluded that the concept of smart specialisation is a product of comprehension and organic integration of scientific views on achieving economic growth, choosing paths, using opportunities and ensuring innovative development of national/regional economies. The author’s vision of the theoretical basis of the concept of smart specialisation is presented, which, unlike the existing ones, specifies the pool of economic theories with the determination of their influence on the meaningful components of the concept of smart specialisation and singles out the theoretical core, functional components and axiomatic part of its basis, which theoretically substantiates the approach of smart specialisation.

The research paper considers the existing approaches to defining the essence of clusterization and clusters in foreign economies, and presents the analysis of conditions leading to the emergence and development of industrial clusters. Some practices of forming cluster structures in the developed countries are described. The role of industrial clusters in providing real economic growth and increasing efficiency of production is clarified. It is proved that using the cluster approach in Ukraine is a necessary foundation for a revival of regional manufacturing and thereby ensuring a high level of the national economy’s competitiveness. The aim of the article is to undertake an in-depth study of international concepts and axiomatic doctrines of integration processes on the basis of using the cluster approaches, which may become the foundation of applied research devoted to efficient functioning of industrial associations as a priority of structural modernization and acceleration of innovation and investment growth of the national manufacturing. The cluster approach has emerged from implementing a policy of foreign countries focused on the development of regions. Implementation of clustering in international activities clearly demonstrates its advancement and efficiency. An important factor of improving efficiency is the organizational factor associated with the regional association of manufacturers. The regions in whose territories clusters are formed become leaders in national economies and foreign economic relations. The study of the basic concepts of competition and global practices of business activities allows us to conclude that the theory of cluster mechanisms serves as a basis for establishing more successful firms and economic systems. Cluster systems combine the most effective and interconnected types of economic activity by grouping successfully competing firms that form the leading component of the whole economic system of the state and create competitive positions in the sectoral, national and global markets. The cluster approach, which was originally used to research issues of competitiveness of individual groups of enterprises, subsequently have become applicable in solving a wider range of tasks: the analysis of the competitiveness of the state, region, sector; as a basis of national manufacturing policy; as a basis for the interaction of big and small businesses.

This research discusses and analyses cutting-edge applications for water-energy-food nexus system analysis. It is axiomatic that substantial data should be acquired for a comprehensive model. The WEF nexus simulator may therefore be built to any extent by using simulated data future integral field spectroscopic (IFs and THENs) for WEF nexus interaction. The required data was then organized, and interactions (IFs and THENs) between the three subsystems were investigated. These IFs and THENs aid in our understanding of and ability to address the intricacy of the WEF. Given that the present study’s objective is to review various solutions for WEF Nexus We can now use these classifications to simplify the WEF nexus idea. In other words, the relationship between the three subsystems is demonstrated by the IFs and THENs variables. It would make sense to remove one of the following THEN variables from one subsystem if one of the IF variables in another subsystem remained. Because earlier Nexus initiatives did not provide information on how to initiate and discover interactions, it will be simple to determine interactions. This study demonstrates how a thorough nexus simulation model can access and communicate a wide range of data. The nexus model's interrelationships and interactions with other subsystems can be easily recovered thanks to this classification approach, and none of them will be missed because of ignorance of the nexus system. These IFs and THENs variables are also seen to be an excellent way to simplify the implementation of the Nexus system. The overall score for each project was then calculated by adding the weighted scores, which provided a methodical and objective way to rank the 29 irrigation and hydroelectric dam projects. This study is the first study in Iraq about water-energy and food nexus and helping to streamline decision-making at the nexus due to the size of the several sectors in the Iraqi human society Following input from NWDS stakeholders, three new factors to take into account when deciding which irrigation project options to pursue were identified: a) Fighting poverty; b) Building irrigation projects close to Iraq's borders to ensure border security. 3) Rural Population Decline or Poverty Exodus. It's important to note that the nation places the highest priority on these three factors (Key Priorities National). Irrigation projects may now be planned in a deliberate manner that takes into account the observations of the relevant authorities thanks to the adoption of these aims together with the strategic assessment criteria. It takes scientific input to create "resource indexes".

The relevance of the research topic is determined by special attention to the development of «green» energy in the state policy of the People's Republic of China. The problem of the development of the Chinese energy sector is the shift of priorities to the search for alternative, clean energy sources that will replace oil and gas. Analysis of recent publications ensures in a persistent interest in the problems of alternative energy in the majority of countries implementing stable economic growth. According to the authors, the processes of integration of alternative energy into the energy system of China, a country with high rates of economic growth, remain unexplored. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the choice of economic instruments for the integration of alternative energy into the energy system of China. The research methods used in the work are comparison, grouping, systems approach, formalization, axiomatic method, analogies, abstraction and modeling. Results of work. Within the framework of this study, the dynamics of changes in the structure of energy consumption in China has been studied, from the point of view of energy sources. China's energy policy issues go hand in hand with its economic policy goals. The country needs to support rapid development and economic growth, but in a much less energy-intensive way. This is widely recognized by the Chinese government, but significant changes in energy consumption versus production could mean major changes in its economic structure. The field of application of the research results is the energy policy of the state, aimed at the greening of life. Findings. The transition to renewable energy is inevitable, so the question is how best to manage this process while minimizing the total cost of energy services and the cost of damage caused by energy use. The combination of energy efficient and renewable energy sources will eventually replace the existing traditional energy system, which is dominated by fossil fuels. The most important factor for such an early transition is the need to address the problem of catastrophic climate change.

A choice rule with affirmative action decides on the recipients of a limited number of identical objects by reconciling two objectives: respecting a priority ordering over the applicants and supporting a minority group. We extend the standard formulation of a choice problem by incorporating a type function and a priority ordering and introduce monotonicity axioms on how a choice rule should respond to variations in these parameters. We show that monotonic and substitutable affirmative action rules are the ones that admit a bounded reserve representation. As a prominent class of choice rules that satisfy the monotonicity axioms, we characterize lexicographic affirmative action rules that are prevalent both in the literature and in practice. Our axiomatic approach provides a novel way to think about reserve systems and uncovers choice rules that go beyond lexicographic affirmative action rules. Theoretical background: Financial statements, due to their verifiability, retain their importance as a fundamental accounting tool trusted by stakeholders. At the same time, the transition to a socio-economic development paradigm has dictated a demand for adhering to requirements which make the information useful for taking informed decisions, primarily those concerning responsible investing. In this regard, the challenge of measuring the usefulness of information requires an in-depth study. Purpose of the article: Consequently, the aim of this work is to develop a model for measuring the practicality of financial reporting based on the interpretation of qualitative characteristics and to substantiate the effectiveness of its application by any accounting system. Research methods: To achieve the objective, a research methodology has been developed, based on the methods of analysis, mathematical, and algorithmic modeling. The analysis method was employed to interpret the concept of qualitative characteristics of information, establishing a correlation between the information theory and the accounting methodology. The modeling method contributed to the development of a three-stage algorithm for choosing one of two modifications within the framework of the qualitative characteristics of information concept and the mechanism for measuring numerical values of information utility for different accounting models – European and Anglo-Saxon. Main findings: An algorithm has been developed for applying the criteria of the qualitative characteristics concept to choose one of its two modifications. The innovation of the study lies in the development of a step-by-step mechanism for determining the numerical value of information usefulness for various accounting systems. Information entropy coefficients have been established, and axiomatic boundaries of the values of the usefulness of financial reporting information have been calculated for different accounting models. The developed model for measuring the usefulness of financial reporting information has been adapted for international accounting systems and underscores the necessity of a creative approach when applying the qualitative characteristics concept to accounting systems situated between IFRS and the EU Directive.

Topicality. In the economy of Ukraine, there are macroeconomic, inter- and intra-sectoral, regional disparities, the appearance of which is due to the existing structure of the economy, the focus on raw material exports, low-tech production, uneven inter-sectoral development, the discrepancy between the needs of the regions and their returns, and many other reasons. The presence of these disparities not only slows down the development of the economy, but also threatens the economic security of Ukraine.Aim and tasks. Taking into account the specified strategic directions, the following tasks are set in the work: to determine the factors influencing the economy and its sectors, which lead to the emergence of structural disparities, to determine the peculiarities inherent in the agro-industrial sector, to identify and systematize the influencing factors in order to develop a strategy and management system based on resilience, to develop methodological approaches to identifying structural disparities in the agri-food sector of the economy.Materials and Methods. Identification of structural disparities, assessment of their effect and depth was carried out using methods of analysis and synthesis, scientific abstraction and statistical grouping, which made it possible to analyze the nature of the process of formation of disparities, to determine the most persistent violations of proportionality at all levels of development of the agro-food sector with the aim of targeted application of preventive prevention measures their negative impact and constructive way out of crisis situations.Research results. From the point of view of the axiomatic of the theory of complex systems, the mechanism of the emergence of structural disparities has been clarified, as a response to a high level of complexity, a rapid change in influencing factors that determine the dynamics of the development of the agro-food sector of the economy, and numerical risks caused by uncertainty, which provokes the emergence of conflict between individual subsystems of the agricultural sector. Priority zones of disproportionality were determined by studying the structure of the population according to individual characteristics.Conclusion. Ensuring sustainable development of the country and its economic security is achieved by the ability to resist the action of external and internal factors, existing and newly created at any economic level of disparities. The peculiarities of the strategy for the development of economic sectors on the basis of resilience are determined. It is shown that the implementation of such a strategy, for any sector of the economy, is based on a well-founded objective and the conclusions of the analysis of modern challenges and the intersection of the interests of market players.

Axiomatic Theories and Improving the Relevance of Information Systems Research This paper examines the fact that a significant number of empirical information systems (IS) studies engage in confirmative testing of self-evident axiomatic theories without yielding highly relevant knowledge for the IS community. The authors conduct both a horizontal analysis of 72 representative IS theories and an in-depth vertical analysis of 3 well-known theories (i.e., technology acceptance model, diffusion of innovation theory, and institutional theory) in order to measure how pervasive such testing of axiomatic theories is. The authors discovered that more than 60% of 666 hypotheses from the horizontal analysis could be regarded as axiomatic theory elements. In the vertical analysis, 68.1% of 1,301 hypotheses from 148 articles were axiomatic. Based on these findings, the authors propose four complementary IS research approaches: (1) identifying disconfirming boundary conditions, (2) measuring the relative importance of axiomatic causal factors, (3) measuring the stage of progression toward visionary goals when the nature of the axiomatic theory can be extended to future visions, and (4) engaging in the conceptual design of visionary axiomatic goals. They argue that these complementary IS research approaches can enhance the relevance of IS research outcomes without sacrificing methodological rigor.

Language Models constitute an effective framework for text retrieval tasks. Recently, it has been extended to various collaborative filtering tasks. In particular, relevance-based language models can be used for generating highly accurate recommendations using a memory-based approach. On the other hand, the query likelihood model has proven to be a successful strategy for neighbourhood computation. Since relevance-based language models rely on user neighbourhoods for producing recommendations, we propose to use the query likelihood model for computing those neighbourhoods instead of cosine similarity. The combination of both techniques results in a formal probabilistic recommender system which has not been used before in collaborative filtering. A thorough evaluation on three datasets shows that the query likelihood model provides better results than cosine similarity. To understand this improvement, we devise two properties that a good neighbourhood algorithm should satisfy. Our axiomatic analysis shows that the query likelihood model always enforces those constraints while cosine similarity does not.

The author starts by attempting to Axiomatize the Education System and by clearly outlining what is meant by Axioms and the Axiomatic Method. Essentially. he takes an Axiomatic Approach to defining Axiomatization. He then describes how a facilitated workshop was used to agree the key features of the education system: – a list of short statements (say 100) about education; – cognate groups (say 10) that are used to sort the statements; and – longer statements that describe those groups. The longer statements are initially given the status First Order Axioms, while short statements are given the status of Second Order Axioms. The First Order Axioms were then grouped into: – Fundamental Axioms; – Structural Axioms; and – Functional Axioms. The main body of the paper then clearly articulates: – those First Order Axioms: Pupils; Education; The State; Subsidiarity; The School; Leadership and Management; The Curriculum; Teachers and Teaching; Assessment and Accreditation and Monitoring and Evaluation; along with – the accompanying Second Order Axioms that were generated when the author participated in their own facilitated workshop. The author also provides the diagrammatic overview of the education system that resulted from the facilitated workshop. He concludes that although the approach can be useful, it has its limitations: a number of the key requirements of Axiomatic Systems cannot be met. The education system is so complex that the Axiomatic System derived from an Axiomatic Approach cannot be Consistent and Independent; nor can all the statements be shown to follow logically from statements that are, in turn, the logical result of other statements. The author finally concludes that, although the approach is useful, the terms Axiomatic System and First and Second Order Axioms should be replaced by Taxonomy and First and Second Order Statements. However, he does suggest that developing a Taxonomy of Educational Objectives could be very useful for: – providing an agreed high-level description of the education system; and – in-service education and staff development purposes.

Complex fuzzy sets, classes, and logic have an important role in applications, such as prediction of periodic events and advanced control systems, where several fuzzy variables interact with each other in a multifaceted way that cannot be represented effectively via simple fuzzy operations such as union, intersection, complement, negation, conjunction and disjunction. The initial formulation of these terms stems from the definition of complex fuzzy grade of membership. The problem, however, with these definitions are twofold: 1) the complex fuzzy membership is limited to polar representation with only one fuzzy component. 2) The definition is based on grade of membership and is lacking the rigor of axiomatic formulation. A new interpretation of complex fuzzy membership enables polar and Cartesian representation of the membership function where the two function components carry uncertain information. Moreover, the new interpretation is used to define complex fuzzy classes and develop an axiomatic based theory of complex propositional fuzzy logic. Additionally, the generalization of the theory to multidimensional fuzzy grades of membership has been demonstrated. In this paper we propose an axiomatic framework for first order predicate complex fuzzy logic and use this framework for axiomatic definition of complex fuzzy classes. We use these rigorous definitions to exemplify inference in complex economic systems. The new framework overcomes the main limitations of current theory and provides several advantages. First, the derivation of the new theory is based on axiomatic approach and does not assume the existence of complex fuzzy sets or complex fuzzy classes. Second, the new form significantly improves the expressive power and inference capability of complex fuzzy logic and class theory. The paper surveys the current state of complex fuzzy sets, complex fuzzy classes, and complex fuzzy logic; and provides an axiomatic basis for first order predicate complex fuzzy logic and complex class theory.

This paper presents a new theoretical approach to the study of robotics manipulators dynamics. It is based on the well-known geometric approach to system dynamics, according to which some axiomatic definitions of geometric structures concerning invariant subspaces are used. In such a framework, certain typical problems in robotics are mathematically formalised and analysed in axiomatic form. The outcomes are sufficiently general that it is possible to discuss the structural properties of robotic manipulation. A generalized theoretical linear model is used, and a thorough analysis is made. The noninteracting nature of this model is also proven through a specific theorem.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe an analytical approach – functional analysis – that can be used to evaluate the current design of an organization and identify alternative designs that may increase the ability to realize strategic and operational goals. Design/methodology/approach The approach described in this paper is based on key concepts in systems theory and axiomatic design theory (Suh, 1990, 2001). A brief case example is used to illustrate the practical application of the approach. Findings It is shown that functional analysis can be used to map the design of an organization and identify key design challenges (e.g. related to overlapping or conflicting functions). Research limitations/implications The case study that is described is considered to be a pilot application of the approach as it is based on a limited number of interviews. Practical implications This paper should be relevant for applied researchers, management consultants, project managers and others who are analyzing the current structure of an organization and/or are involved in re-designing an organization. Social implications Application of the functional approach may improve design processes and thereby enhance the effectiveness of social systems, including public and private sector organizations. Originality/value This paper describes how key concepts in systems theory and axiomatic design theory can provide the basis for a new framework for analyzing organization designs.

One of the major challenges in the field of neurally driven evolved autonomous agents is deciphering the neural mechanisms underlying their behavior. Aiming at this goal, we have developed the multi-perturbation Shapley value analysis (MSA)—the first axiomatic and rigorous method for deducing causal function localization from multiple-perturbation data, substantially improving on earlier approaches. Based on fundamental concepts from game theory, the MSA provides a formal way of defining and quantifying the contributions of network elements, as well as the functional interactions between them. The previously presented versions of the MSA require full knowledge (or at least an approximation) of the network's performance under all possible multiple perturbations, limiting their applicability to systems with a small number of elements. This article focuses on presenting new scalable MSA variants, allowing for the analysis of large complex networks in an efficient manner, including large-scale neurocontrollers. The successful operation of the MSA along with the new variants is demonstrated in the analysis of several neurocontrollers solving a food foraging task, consisting of up to 100 neural elements.

The issue of the emergence of formal axiomatic logical systems due to the emergence of logical antinomies in formal axiomatic systems, specifically the issue of developing formal logical axiomatics in the calculus of considerations was investigated in the considered research. At the same time, in order to determine the characteristics of the implementation of the logical-methodological principles and provisions of the deductive reasoning obviously, conceptual-logical foundations of the calculus of considerations was studied and the main propositions of the calculus of considerations and the analysis of the initial logical operations on them were given in the study. The basic laws of logic and the expression of one logical act with another one were also explained in the research work by giving the concepst of proportional form and tautology in the calculus of considerations. At the same time, main properties and the procedure of setting of the formal deductive theory in the calculus of considerations were studied in the article. In order to provide an adequate characterization of the conceptual and methodological bases of the calculus of considerations in the research work, the basic logical laws of the calculus of considerations developed by the German mathematician and thinker P. Hilbert were also given. In addition, the main principles and methodological provisions of the deductive method were investigated, and the rules of deriving new conclusions from the axioms were interpreted. At the end of the reviewed article, the main principles and methods of the formal axiomatic mathematical systems built on a deductive basis, specifically the calculus of considerations, were studied and a logical-methodological analysis of the calculus of considerations was carried out on this basis. In this framework, the syntactic and semantic analysis of formalized language in formal axiomatic logical systems was carried out separately, the constituent parts of those systems, including the construction scheme, were given.

An axiomatic development of control systems theory can systematize important concepts. The current research article is dedicated to the investigation and comparison of two axiomatic approaches to the analysis of discrete linear time-invariant systems affected by external random disturbances. The main goal of this paper is to explore axiomatics of an anisotropy-based theory in comparison with axiomatics of a spectral entropy approach in detail. It is demonstrated that the use of the spectral entropy approach is mathematically rigorous, which allows one to prove that the minimal disturbance attenuation level in terms of an anisotropy-based control theory provides the desired performance that is not only for ergodic signals. As a result, axiomatics of the spectral entropy approach allows one to rigorously prove that anisotropy-based controllers can be used to guarantee the desired disturbance attenuation level, not only for stationary random sequences, but also for a wider set of input random signals.

We develop a powerful approach that makes modern SAT solving techniques available as a tool to support the axiomatic analysis of economic matching mechanisms. Our central result is a preservation theorem, establishing sufficient conditions under which the possibility of designing a matching mechanism meeting certain axiomatic requirements for a given number of agents carries over to all scenarios with strictly fewer agents. This allows us to obtain general results about matching by verifying claims for specific instances using a SAT solver. We use our approach to automatically derive elementary proofs for two new impossibility theorems: (i) a strong form of Roth's classical result regarding the impossibility of designing mechanisms that are both stable and strategyproof and (ii) a result establishing the impossibility of guaranteeing stability while also respecting a basic notion of cross-group fairness (so-called gender-indifference).

The paper presents the axiomatic-deductive strategy of organizing the content of an academic discipline with the help of ontological approach in the e-learning systems in the field of information technologies. The authors have taken into account that the necessary property of the system of axiomatic statements is their consistency. On the basis of axiomatic-deductive strategy, new approaches to the formation of the discipline content are proposed. It is proved that the system of true statements of an academic discipline is based on its terminology-conceptual apparatus, in particular, axiomatic statements. The developed mathematical structures that describe the axiomatic-deductive substrategy of the organization of the academic discipline general statements and the taxonomically oriented substrategy of the deployment of the academic discipline content are presented in the article. This ensures the transition from the content form of representation of the set of statements of the academic discipline to its presentation by means of artificial languages of mathematical logic. The use of descriptive logic ensures the formalization of the procedure for displaying an axiomatic informal system in an axiomatic formal system. The mathematical structures describe and detail the abstract logical-semantic core of the academic discipline in the form of a group of axiomatic systems. It is noted that the basic core of the content of academic discipline contains its basic concepts and judgments. This ensures a strictly logical transition from abstract general concepts and statements to the concepts and assertions of the lower level of universality and abstraction. It is noted that in order to accommodate the content of an academic discipline is advisable to develop a taxonomically oriented sub-strategy based on the multiple application of operations of general concept division. The mathematical structures allow for analysis of a generalized structure of interactions between the verbal level of the description of the academic discipline subject area, the formal level of description of the subject area and the description of the subject area at the level of computer ontology, which is implemented through the formalization, interpretation, encoding and decoding in the computer-ontology development environment. As an example of the application of the proposed axiomatic-deductive strategy, the elements of the glossary and taxonomies of the concepts of the discipline "Computer Logic", which are embodied in the Protégé environment with the help of OWL ontology description language have been developed.

When reassessing the role of Debreu's axiomatic method in economics, one has to explain both its success and unpopularity; one has to explain the "bright shadow" Debreu cast on the discipline: sheltering, threatening, and difficult to pin down. Debreu himself did not expect to have such an influence. Before he received the Bank of Sweden Prize in 1983 he had never openly engaged with the methodology or politics of mathematical economics. When in several speeches he later rigorously distinguished mathematical form from economic content and claimed this as the virtue of mathematical economics, he did both: he defended mathematical reasoning against the theoretical innovations since the 1970s and expressed remorse for having promised too much because it cannot support claims about economic content. The analysis of this twofold role of Debreu's axiomatic method raises issues of the social and political responsibility of economists over and above standard epistemic issues.

Energy Sustainability has been addressed through advancing technology efficiency, which may increase the impact of the use of natural resources. However, the increase in efficiency makes services cheaper, which causes a rebound effect, direct or indirect, on energy consumption and materials. Moreover, the popular concept of recycling seems insufficient to reduce the use of critical raw materials to provide energy services. From the perspective of the Earth’s limited resources, the sustainability problem needs a design approach to tackle the rebound effect from efficiency. This work aims to create a theoretical holistic review regarding energy use linked to technology efficiency, to understand how rebound effects may be prevented. In this work, the Axiomatic Design (AD) theory creates the framework that defines the Energy Sustainability functions and identifies the couplings that create the rebounds. According to AD, cycles occur on coupled designs, classified as poor designs. Decoupling the design clarifies two possible and complementary policies to achieve sustainability goals regarding the use of resources. The first is the circular economy, with constraints on energy and raw materials. The second is the massive use of local renewable energies. Plausible solutions come from mandating efficiency and taxation, dematerializing the economy, and reducing, reusing, remanufacturing, and recycling materials from products and systems. These solutions impact economic, environmental, and societal behaviors. The novelty of this approach is the definition of a system model for Energy Sustainability in the frame of AD, while tackling the rebound effect from technological efficiency.

Pollination is a crucial ecological process with far-reaching impacts on natural and agricultural systems. Approximately 85% of flowering plants depend on animal pollinators for successful reproduction. Over 75% of global food crops rely on pollinators, making them indispensable for sustaining human populations. Wind, water, insects, birds, bats, mammals, amphibians, and mollusks accomplish the pollination process. The design features of flowers and pollinators in angiosperms make the pollination process functionally effective and efficient. In this paper, we analyze the design aspects of the honeybee-enabled flower pollination process using the axiomatic design methodology. We tabulate functional requirements (FRs) of flower and honeybee components and map them onto nature-chosen design parameters (DPs). We apply the “independence axiom” of the axiomatic design methodology to identify couplings and to evaluate if the features of a flower and a honeybee form a good design (i.e., uncoupled design) or an underperforming design (i.e., coupled design). We also apply the axiomatic design methodology’s “information axiom” to assess the pollination process’s robustness and reliability. Through this exploration, we observed that the pollination process is not only a good design but also a robust design. This approach to assessing whether nature’s processes are good or bad designs can be valuable for biomimicry studies. This approach can also inform design considerations for bio-inspired innovations such as microrobots.

Kenneth J. Arrow was one of the most important intellectuals of the twentieth century, and his “impossibility theorem” is arguably the starting point of modern, axiomatic social choice theory. In this review, we begin with a brief discussion of Arrow's theorem and subsequent work that extended the result. We then discuss its implications for voting and constitutional systems, including a number of seminal results—both positive and negative—that characterize what such systems can accomplish and why. We then depart from this narrow interpretation of the result to consider more varied institutional design questions such as apportionment and geographical districting. Following this, we address the theorem's implications for measurement of concepts of fundamental interest to political science such as justice and inequality. Finally, we address current work applying social choice concepts and the axiomatic method to data analysis more generally.

Logical analysis of data and knowledge is required not only in artificial intelligence systems, but also in mathematical proofs. This work shows the difficulties of logical analysis caused by the indisputable application of the formal axiomatic approach adopted at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries as the only theoretical basis of modern logic and the foundations of mathematics. In this approach, the main role is played by the axioms and methods of syntactic analysis, which underlie predicate calculus. Instead of set theory, we propose to use more simple algebra of sets as a theoretical basis of such a logic, for which the substantiation of the basic laws does not require axioms. A new approach to logical analysis based on the laws of set algebra is considered. Some advantages of this approach are shown, and a list of unresolved problems is provided.

Abstract In the analysis of physical systems, the forces and mechanics of all system changes as codified in the Newtonian laws can be redefined by the methods of Lagrange and Hamilton through an identification of the governing action principle as a more general framework for dynamics. For the living system, it is the dimensional and relational structure of its biologic continuum (both internal and external to the organism) that creates the signature informational metrics and course configurations for the action dynamics associated with any natural systems phenomena. From this dynamic information theoretic framework, an action functional can be also derived in accordance with the methods of Lagrange. The experiential process of acquiring information and translating it into actionable meaning for adaptive responses is the driving force for changes in the living system. The core axiomatic procedure of this adaptive process should include an innate action principle that can determine the system’s directional changes. This procedure for adaptive system reconciliation of divergences from steady state within the biocontinuum can be described by an information metric formulation of the process for actionable knowledge acquisition that incorporates the axiomatic inference of the Kullback’s Principle of Minimum Discrimination Information powered by the mechanics of survival replicator dynamics. This entropic driven trajectory naturally minimizes the biocontinuum information gradient differences like a least action principle and is an inference procedure for directional change. If the mathematical expression of this process is the Lagrangian integrand for adaptive changes within the biocontinuum, then it is also considered as an action functional for the living system.

The value of Axiomatic Design functional decomposition as a design analysis point tool has been widely reported. This paper reports on the implementation of functional decomposition design processes as a system design tool on 23 industrial projects over a 5 year period with product development teams ranging from 6 to 35 engineers. The products developed were systems of systems with mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, and operational interface elements. Functional decompositions ranged from about 200 to 1600 Functional Requirements. A number of these projects are now in commercial production. This paper reviews the process definition and implementation process steps that evolved from these experiences. The paper then reports on the implementation lessons learned and the value propositions noted. Conclusions and recommendations are made. The experiences demonstrated that functional requirement decomposition processes aid in achieving on-time, on-cost and on-specification project development targets. The authors propose this paper summarizes the “Endgame” design process impact that axiomatic design can reasonably expect in industry design practices for system development.

In the thirty years since its invention by Abraham Robinson, nonstandard analysis has become a useful tool for research in many areas of mathematics. It seems fair to say, however, that the search for practically satisfactory foundations for the subject is not yet completed. New proposals, intended to remedy various shortcomings of older approaches, continue to be put forward. The objective of this paper is to show that nonstandard concepts have a natural place in the usual (more or less “standard”) set theory, and to argue that this approach improves upon various aspects of hitherto considered systems, while retaining most of their attractive features. We do this by working in Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory with non-well-founded sets. It has always been clear that the axiom of regularity may fail for external sets. The previous approaches either avoid non-well-foundedness by considering only that fragment of nonstandard set theory that is well-founded (over individuals; enlargements of Robinson and Zakon [17]) or reluctantly live with it (various axiomatic nonstandard set theories). Ballard and Davidon [2] were the first to propose constructive use for non-well-foundedness in the foundations of nonstandard analysis. In the present paper we adopt a very strong anti-foundation axiom. In the resulting more or less “usual” set theory, the (to the “standard” mathematician) unfamiliar concepts of standard, external and internal sets can be defined and their requisite properties proved (rather than postulated, as is the case in axiomatic nonstandard set theories).

In the present paper, we propose a new axiomatic approach to nonstandard analysis and its application to the general theory of spatial structures in terms of category theory. Our framework is based on the idea of internal set theory, while we make use of an endofunctor U on a topos of sets S together with a natural transformation υ, instead of the terms as “standard”, “internal”, or “external”. Moreover, we propose a general notion of a space called U-space, and the category USpace whose objects are U-spaces and morphisms are functions called U-spatial morphisms. The category USpace, which is shown to be Cartesian closed, gives a unified viewpoint toward topological and coarse geometric structure. It will also be useful to further study symmetries/asymmetries of the systems with infinite degrees of freedom, such as quantum fields.

AbstractGentzen's systems of natural deduction and sequent calculus were byproducts in his program of proving the consistency of arithmetic and analysis. It is suggested that the central component in his results on logical calculi was the use of a tree form for derivations. It allows the composition of derivations and the permutation of the order of application of rules, with a full control over the structure of derivations as a result. Recently found documents shed new light on the discovery of these calculi. In particular, Gentzen set up five different forms of natural calculi and gave a detailed proof of normalization for intuitionistic natural deduction. An early handwritten manuscript of his thesis shows that a direct translation from natural deduction to the axiomatic logic of Hilbert and Ackermann was, in addition to the influence of Paul Hertz, the second component in the discovery of sequent calculus. A system intermediate between the sequent calculus LI and axiomatic logic, denoted LIG in unpublished sources, is implicit in Gentzen's published thesis of 1934–35. The calculus has half rules, half “groundsequents,” and does not allow full cut elimination. Nevertheless, a translation from LI to LIG in the published thesis gives a subformula property for a complete class of derivations in LIG. After the thesis, Gentzen continued to work on variants of sequent calculi for ten more years, in the hope to find a consistency proof for arithmetic within an intuitionistic calculus.

Today choice under uncertainty is a field in flux: the standard theory is being challenged on several grounds from both within and outside economics. The nature of these challenges, and of our profession's responses to them, is the topic of this paper.

AbstractIn papers published between 1930 and 1935, Zermelo outlines a foundational program, with infinitary logic at its heart, that is intended to (1) secure axiomatic set theory as a foundation for arithmetic and analysis and (2) show that all mathematical propositions are decidable. Zermelo's theory of systems of infinitely long propositions may be termed “Cantorian” in that a logical distinction between open and closed domains plays a signal role. Well-foundedness and strong inaccessibility are used to systematically integrate highly transfinite concepts of demonstrability and existence. Zermelo incompleteness is then the analogue of the Problem of Proper Classes, and the resolution of these two anomalies is similarly analogous.

Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a systematic approach for evaluating failure modes in a system. However, its current implementation in complex systems is marred by high resource requirements, a lack of available data and difficulty of deployment. Consequently, attempts to integrate FMEA with other systematic methodologies have yielded unclear outcomes. Therefore, this paper used a score-based metric and applied the ordered probit model to empirically identify challenges associated with deploying FMEA and these attempts’ impact on FMEA applications as well as the influence of other organisational parameters. Our findings reveal that Fault Tree Analysis and Axiomatic Design methodologies reduced the perceived level of challenge significantly in the investigated sample. Our research outcome is of value to the practitioner community by showing that the level of challenge associated with FMEA deployment appears independent of organisational parameters, and that such a co-adoption of complementary methodologies in complex systems can reduce this challenge.
