No se cuenta con datos normativos de la AVLT-PA para adultos mayores. Objetivo. Estudiar la correlación entre variables sociodemográficas (sexo, edad y nivel educativo) y la AVLT-PA en personas mayores, para presentar valores de referencia argentinos de la AVLT-PA. Metodología. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 107 adultos mayores argentinos entre 60 y 89 años. Se analizaron la correlación y las diferencias de variables de la AVLT-PA según sexo, edad y nivel educativo. Resultados. Se observó una correlación negativa estadísticamente significativa entre edad y AVLT-PA, y se observaron diferencias según sexo. No se observó correlación entre las variables de la AVLT-PA y los años de educación. Conclusiones. La AVLT-PA presenta diferencias según edad y sexo, pero no presentó correlación con los años de educación formal, resultando así una herramienta útil para describir el funcionamiento en memoria episódica en personas mayores sanas con diferentes niveles educativos. Por lo tanto, se tomaron en cuenta estas variables para presentar los valores de referencias de la AVLT-PA para población argentina.

Amaç: Üst solunum yolu obstrüksiyonuna bağlı apne ve oksijen satürasyonunda düşme ile karakterize obstrüktif uyku apne sendromunun (OUAS) bazı nörokognitif bozukluklara sebep olabileceği daha önceki çalışmalarda ileri sürülmüştür. Bu çalışmada sağlıklı kontrol grubuna kıyasla, ağır OUAS hastalarında gelişebilecek ileri kognitif fonksiyonları değerlendirmeyi amaçladık. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Polisomnografik (PSG) inceleme yapılmış olan hastalardan ağır OUAS tanısı alan 18-70 yaş arasındaki 25 hastaya ileri kognitif testler uygulandı. Olgular yaş ve cinsiyet uyumlu 25 sağlıklı kontrol grubu ile kıyaslandı. Hasta ve kontrol gruplarına; epizodik bellek ve öğrenmeyi değerlendirilmek için Rey İşitsel Sözel Öğrenme Testi (Rey ‘Auditory Verbal Learning Test’, AVLT) ile yürütücü fonksiyonlar ve dikkati değerlendirmek için Stroop Testi uygulandı. Bulgular: Gruplar arasında Stroop-1, Stroop-2, Stroop-3, Stroop-4 ve Stroop-Toplam sürelerinde (sırası ile ortalama ± standart sapma: 13,3±5,3 saniye, 13,2±4 saniye, 18,1±7,1 saniye, 24,2±7,4 saniye, 100,8±29,7 saniye ve p değerleri: p=0.031, p=0.044, p=0.013, p=0.027 ve p=0.032) uzama, AVLT testinde ise AVLT B, AVLT Tanıma puanlarında düşüş izlendi (sırası ile ortalama ± standart sapma: 12,7±2,3 puan, 38±10,2 puan ve p değerleri: p=0.042, p0.05). Sonuç: Çalışmamızda ağır derecede OUAS hastalarında Stroop Testi ve AVLT sonucuna göre dikkat ve epizodik belleğin belirgin şekilde bozulduğunu gösterdik.

Objective:The Stricker Learning Span (SLS) is a computer-adaptive word list memory test specifically designed for remote assessment and self-administration on a web-based multi-device platform (Mayo Test Drive). Given recent evidence suggesting the prominence of learning impairment in preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the SLS places greater emphasis on learning than delayed memory compared to traditional word list memory tests (see Stricker et al., Neuropsychology in press for review and test details). The primary study aim was to establish criterion validity of the SLS by comparing the ability of the remotely-administered SLS and inperson administered Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) to differentiate biomarkerdefined groups in cognitively unimpaired (CU) individuals on the Alzheimer’s continuum.Participants and Methods:Mayo Clinic Study of Aging CU participants (N=319; mean age=71, SD=11; mean education=16, SD=2; 47% female) completed a brief remote cognitive assessment (∼0.5 months from in-person visit). Brain amyloid and brain tau PET scans were available within 3 years. Overlapping groups were formed for 1) those on the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) continuum (A+, n=110) or not (A-, n=209), and for 2) those with biological AD (A+T+, n=43) vs no evidence of AD pathology (A-T-, n=181). Primary neuropsychological outcome variables were sum of trials for both the SLS and AVLT. Secondary outcome variables examined comparability of learning (1-5 total) and delay performances. Linear model ANOVAs were used to investigate biomarker subgroup differences and Hedge’s G effect sizes were derived, with and without adjusting for demographic variables (age, education, sex).Results:Both SLS and AVLT performances were worse in the biomarker positive relative to biomarker negative groups (unadjusted p’s<.05). Because biomarker positive groups were significantly older than biomarker negative groups, group differences were attenuated after adjusting for demographic variables, but SLS remained significant for A+ vs A- and for A+T+ vs A-T- comparisons (adjusted p’s<.05) and AVLT approached significance (p’s .05-.10). The effect sizes for the SLS were slightly better (qualitatively, no statistical comparison) for separating biomarker-defined CU groups in comparison to AVLT. For A+ vs A- and A+T+ vs A-T- comparisons, unadjusted effect sizes for SLS were -0.53 and -0.81 and for AVLT were -0.47 and -0.61, respectively; adjusted effect sizes for SLS were -0.25 and -0.42 and for AVLT were -0.19 and -0.26, respectively. In secondary analyses, learning and delay variables were similar in terms of ability to separate biomarker groups. For example, unadjusted effect sizes for SLS learning (-.80) was similar to SLS delay (.76), and AVLT learning (-.58) was similar to AVLT 30-minute delay (-.55) for the A+T+ vs AT- comparison.Conclusions:Remotely administered SLS performed similarly to the in-person-administered AVLT in its ability to separate biomarker-defined groups in CU individuals, providing evidence of criterion validity. The SLS showed significantly worse performance in A+ and A+T+ groups (relative to A- and A-T-groups) in this CU sample after demographic adjustment, suggesting potential sensitivity to detecting transitional cognitive decline in preclinical AD. Measures emphasizing learning should be given equal consideration as measures of delayed memory in AD-focused studies, particularly in the preclinical phase.

This paper explains about an improvement of high end performance using an adaptive valve lift and timing mechanism (AVLT). This system is developed with an aim to produce a more powerful engine through a variable valve timing technique. The preliminary design of this system adjusts the valve lift via control lever positioned by the rotation of an electric motor and has the potential to be actuated by a hydraulic cylinder that utilises engine fluids pressure difference with respect to the engine speed which made the valve lifts higher in higher engine speed and loads. The mechanism actuation is determined by a feedback signal of the engine electronic control unit that interacted in relation with the present engine speed and load. Therefore, a continuously dynamic valve lift profile with respect to the engine speed can be achieved thus varies the output performance of an engine. As a result of applying the AVLT on a simulated engine model with the actual parameters, the power and torque were increased in high engine speed (above 4000 rpm). The AVLT is able to increase the default valve lift by up to 35.96%. In high end speed of 7000 rpm, maximum lift of AVLT improved engine power by 4.26%, brake torque by 4.25% and reduced the brake specific fuel consumption by 1.14%. Maximum lift of AVLT increased the engine peak power at 6000 rpm by 2.38%. The product of this research will be useful to optimise the height of the valve lift during operation thus improves the engine performance, fuel economy and emission levels of spark ignition engine.

Patients with obesity are known to exhibit gut microbiota dysbiosis and memory deficits. Bariatric surgery (BS) is currently the most efficient anti-obesity treatment and may improve both gut dysbiosis and cognition. However, no study has investigated association between changes of gut microbiota and cognitive function after BS. We prospectively evaluated 13 obese patients on anthropometric data, memory functions, and gut microbiota-mycobiota before and six months after BS. The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) and the symbol span (SS) of the Weschler Memory Scale were used to assess verbal and working memory, respectively. Fecal microbiota and mycobiota were longitudinally analyzed by 16S and ITS2 rRNA sequencing respectively. AVLT and SS scores were significantly improved after BS (AVLT scores: 9.7 ± 1.7 vs. 11.2 ± 1.9, p = 0.02, and SS scores: 9.7 ± 23.0 vs. 11.6 ± 2.9, p = 0.05). An increase in bacterial alpha-diversity, and Ruminococcaceae, Prevotella, Agaricus, Rhodotorula, Dipodascus, Malassezia, and Mucor were significantly associated with AVLT score improvement after BS, while an increase in Prevotella and a decrease in Clostridium, Akkermansia, Dipodascus and Candida were linked to SS scores improvement. We identified several changes in the microbial communities that differ according to the improvement of either the verbal or working memories, suggesting a complex gut-brain-axis that evolves after BS.

Abstract In an observational longitudinal study of a sub-sample of the Aberdeen 1936 birth cohort, from age 62 to 77 years, we investigated childhood intelligence, social class, education, life-course social mobility, memory test performance and memory decline in late life. We examined 388 local residents who had attended school in Aberdeen in 1947 and measured Auditory-Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) at recruitment age about 64 years and up to five times until age about 77 years. Better performance at age about 64 on AVLT was predicted by early socioeconomic status (SES), social mobility and childhood intelligence. The trajectory of AVLT decline was steeper in those who had received less education. This relationship was independent of childhood ability, sex, SES in childhood and social mobility. The protection of memory by education suggests that education supports resilience to age-related cognitive impairment. Upward social mobility does not enhance this effect, suggesting that resilience to age-related decline may be established in early life.

This paper explains about the evaluation of intake air flow, volumetric efficiency and noise of a motor-driven engine that used an adaptive valve lift and timing mechanism (AVLT) on one intake valve. This system is developed with an aim to produce a more powerful engine through variable valve timing and lift technique. The system made the valve lifts higher without increasing the valve lift duration. Therefore, a dynamic valve lift profile with respect to the engine speed can be achieved thus varies the input and output of an engine. As a result of applying the AVLT on a motor-driven engine, the engine noise, emission noise and the mass air flow entering the engine cylinder was increased. When AVLT is employed to a maximum lift, the mass air flow of default intake valve lift was improved within a range from 8% to 46.64% in 500 rpm to 2000 rpm speed range. Maximum lift produced engine noise within a range of 2.57% to 18.13% higher than the default lift throughout all speed. Also, maximum lift produced emission noise within a range of 2.47% to 19.19% higher than the default lift throughout all speed. The product of this research will be useful to optimise the height and timing of the valve lift and the AVLT mountings on the engine head during operation thus improves the engine performance, fuel economy, emission levels and reduced noise of a modified engine.

ABSTRACTBackground: Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and concomitant atrophy of the hippocampus may be extra vulnerable to the consequences of psychological distress, leading to greater decline in memory function. The present study investigated whether symptoms of anxiety and depression predict decline of memory function in elderly people diagnosed with early stage AD.Methods: A sample of 44 elderly people diagnosed with early stage AD was tested on their memory function, anxiety and depression and confounding variables with one year follow-up. Episodic memory was measured with a modified Dutch version of the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) which measures learning and recall abilities. Linear regression analyses were used to investigate the association between anxiety and depressive symptoms and decline of memory function.Results: Anxiety symptoms predicted a smaller decline in learning on the AVLT. Anxiety symptoms did not predict decline on the recall of the AVLT. No association was found between depressive symptoms and decline in either learning or recall of the AVLT.Conclusions: In early AD, symptoms of anxiety and depression generally seem to be mild, and do not accelerate decline of memory function over time. On the contrary, anxiety symptoms were found to predict a smaller decline in memory function.

I verbala minnestester brukar friska individer komma ihåg flera ord från början och från slutet av ordlistan (primacy- och recency-effekt) än från mitten av den. Detta fenomen kallas för seriepositionseffekt. Recency-effekten anses bero på arbetsminnet, medan episodiska minnet ansvarar för primacy-effekten. Svårigheter med episodiska minnet är ofta det första symtomet vid begynnande Alzheimers sjukdom. Femtiosju testprotokoll av Rey AVLT varav en tredjedel kom från patienter med Alzheimers sjukdom, en tredjedel från personer med diagnosen lindrig kognitiv störning och en tredjedel från friska kontrollpersoner, undersöktes med flera poängsättningsmetoder baserade på seriepositionseffekten, för att se om någon metod skapade tydligare skillnader mellan diagnosgrupperna än den sedvanliga poängsättningen. Resultatet av alternativa poängsättningsmetoder skilde sig överlag mindre än förväntat från den sedvanliga poängsättningen. Enbart primacy gav tydligt sämre resultat, medan metoder som ger poäng för alla ord förutom recency gav i vissa fall något bättre resultat än den sedvanliga poängsättningen.

This project evaluates the suitability and practicality of the program Athena Vortex Lattice (AVL) by Mark Drela. A short user guide was written to make it easier (especially for students) to get started with the program AVL. AVL was applied to calculate the induced drag and the Oswald factor. In a first task, AVL was used to calculate simple wings of different aspect ratio A and taper ratio lambda. The Oswald factor was calculated as a function f(lambda) in the same way as shown by HOERNER. Compared to HOERNER's function, the error never exceed 7.5%. Surprisingly, the function f(lambda) was not independent of aspect ratio, as could be assumed from HOERNER. Variations of f(lambda) with aspect ratio were studied and general results found. In a second task, the box wing was investigated. Box wings of different h/b ratio: 0.31, 0.62, and 0.93 were calculated in AVL. The induced drag and Oswald factor in all these cases was calculated. An equation, generally used in the literature, describes the box wing's Oswald factor with parameters k1, k2, k3 and k4. These parameters were found from results obtained with AVL by means of the Excel Solver. In this way the curve k = f(h/b) was plotted. The curve was compared with curves with various theories and experiments conducted prior by other students. The curve built based on AVL fits very well with the curve from HOERNER, PRANDTL and a second experiment made in the wind tunnel at HAW Hamburg.

I det här avseendet tar aktiebolagslagen dock varken hänsyn till en överträdelse av bolagets verksamhetsföremål eller det faktum att tredje man likväl kun- nat vara i ond tro, bolaget blir bundet av rättshandlingen gentemot tredje man ändå. Häri- genom blir generalklausulen och jämkning i förhållande till befogenhetsöverskridande i ak- tiebolagslagen av intresse eftersom att en sådan tillämpning i praktiken inte bör vara ett hinder. Norsk domstol har påvisat att ett avtal som företagits genom befogenhetsöverskri- dande kan jämkas med hjälp av generalklausulen i avtalslagen.
The general clause in contract law is said to apply throughout property law and therefore it implies that it should also apply to circumstances in which representatives of a company abuses their right to act on behalf of the company. This situation is however regulated dif- ferently in accordance with company law. Therefore it is not obvious for the general clause to apply to representatives abuses of such, since the company law has other consequences in mind regarding management abuse. A company can, for instance be bound by an act undertaken by the general representative or special signatory where he, by that act exceeds his authority. The company is hereby bound by the act unless the company itself can prove that the third party acted in bad faith. Moreover a company will be bound by an act under- taken by the Board of Directors or the President, where they abuse their right to act on be- half of the company, in violation of statutes or regulations such has been issued by another company organ. With regards to this, the company legislation does not account neither the violation of the company's objects nor the fact that third party nevertheless could have act- ed in bad faith. Regardless, the company is bound by the act of their representative against third party, according to company law. With regards to this the general clause and its possi- bilities to adjustments becomes noteworthy in relation to representatives abuse of acts, considering that such an application should, in practice, not be an obstacle. The Norwegian court has established just that, and an act undertaken via representatives abuse of power can be adjusted by the general clause according to contract law.

Automatic vehicle locator (AVL) systems, utilizing military's global positioning system, may impact response time to law enforcement calls for service. In order to evaluate the impacts of AVL on response time to calls for service at the Altamonte Springs Police Department (ASPD), computer aided dispatch (CAD) data from years 1999 to 2003 were analyzed. The analysis of each of the data sets consisted of an initial sequence chart, an analysis of variance (ANOVA), a means plot and a linear regression. Interviews of ASPD personnel were conducted to understand user perceptions of AVL. Based on the ANOVA results, trends indicate that weekly response time was significantly lower during the AVL partial implementation period than during the pre or post AVL stages across all categories of data analyzed. Based on the regression results, trends indicate that the overall impact of AVL on response time for all categories analyzed is flat and show AVL as having no overall impact on response time across all calls for service analyzed. An exception to this is the findings related to Priority 3 calls for service; however this exception can be attributed to performance during the pre AVL implementation stage. These results do not suggest a capability for AVL to reduce response time to calls for service in a meaningful comprehensive way. Thus, the study's hypotheses are not supported.

Early detection of cognitive decline and monitoring of cognitive functioning in mild dementia are fundamental for timely adaptation of lifestyle and intervention strategies. The development of digital dementia biomarkers through playful exercises with high adherence rate was a key objective of the national project multimodAAL (no. FFG 875345). The results of a study on computer-based cognitive and physical training (CCPT) in persons diagnosed with mild Alzheimer’s disease (PwAD) are presented.Method: Tablet-PC-based intervention was applied within 6 months in Austria, engaging PwADs living at home by means of playful multimodal training and activation (n=11; female N=8, male N=3; age M=76.6 / SD=9.2 years, MMSE score M=21.50 / SD=4.41). PwADs interacted with a prototypical version of the BRAINMEE app that included a suite of cognitive exercises (puzzle, pairs, text gap filling) based on audiovisual information. The playful training app was introduced and assisted by mobile care professionals with weekly visits, however, PwDs played alone between these visits.Result: PwADs applied training with high adherence, finalizing M=72 (M=32) digital exercises per day within the first (last) month of the study. Duration of using exercise type ‘outsider’(p=.028*) and ‘quiz’ (p=.001**), averaged about 2 week figures, each provided statistically significant correlations (Spearman) with MMSE test scores, as well as ‘spot-the-difference’ (p=.003**) with Trail Making Test A, ‘outsider’ (p=.005**) with Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), respectively. A neural network (Support Vector Machine, linear kernel, 11-fold cross validation) using duration of use of ‘quiz’, ’outsider’ and ‘hearing’ (guessing animal sounds) as input data resulted in M=2.16 absolute error in MMSE score estimation on test data.Conclusion: The work outlined within the Austrian study on digital biomarker development indicates successful steps towards daily use of cognitive assessment using highly adherent playful training. The playful training app is applied in the European project MARA (no. FFG 886427) to enable continuous estimates of MCI’s mental state over time. The app was very well accepted by both PwADs and persons with MCI. It offers with its pervasive mental assessment tool a large potential for future long-term monitoring in dementia prevention, early detection as well as in numerous dementia care services.

INDOT has recently completed the deployment of Parsons telematics-based dash-cameras, automatic vehicle locator (AVL) positions, and spreader rate monitoring across their winter operations fleet. The motivation of this study was to develop dashboards that integrate connected vehicle data into the real-time monitoring and after-action review of winter storms. Each month approximately 13 billion connected vehicle records are ingested for the state of Indiana and almost 99 billion weather data records are ingested nationwide in 15-minute intervals. This study developed techniques to utilize this connected vehicle data and weather data to monitor real-time mobility of interstates and post storm after-action assessments to identify improvement opportunities of winter operations activities. In multiple instances, these agile reviews have influenced operational changes in snow removal and maintenance around the state, leading to a marked improvement in observed mobility and safety.

This case study is one of ten international studies developed by the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS), in association with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), for the cities of Anyang, Medellin, Namyangju, Orlando, Pangyo, Rio de Janeiro, Santander, Singapore, Songdo, and Tel Aviv. At the IDB, the Competitiveness and Innovation Division (CTI), the Fiscal and Municipal Management Division (FMM), and the Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative (ESCI) coordinated the study. This project was part of technical cooperation ME-T1254, financed by the Knowledge Partnership Korean Fund for Technology and Innovation of the Republic of Korea. At KRIHS, the National Infrastructure Research Division coordinated the project and the Global Development Partnership Center provided the funding. As an international destination for theme parks, sporting events and conventions, Orlando approaches the smart city operation through Orlando Operations Center (OOC), an integrated facility established in 2001 by the Mayor after the 1997 hurricane. The major features of the integrated operation include the sharing of fiber optic networks and CCTV cameras, and close cooperation between transport, police and fire departments for road, criminal and disaster incident, and the emergency operation center within the OOC taking the lead in case of special event management and large-scale natural disasters. Along with the OOC, the city hall also utilizes smart city functions such as red light violation enforcement through detectors, bus management through AVL technology, GPS garbage truck tracking, and GIS water management. Orlando has experienced significant benefits in terms of shortened decision-making and response time, reduced operation cost, and improved environmental impacts, as well as enhanced service quality and communication with citizen.

Washington, DC is ranked second among cities in terms of highest public transit commuters in the United States, with approximately 9% of the working population using the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrobuses to commute. Deducing accurate travel times of these metrobuses is an important task for transit authorities to provide reliable service to its patrons. This study, using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), developed prediction models for transit buses to assist decision-makers to improve service quality and patronage. For this study, we used six months of Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and Automatic Passenger Counting (APC) data for six Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) bus routes operating in Washington, DC. We developed regression models and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models for predicting travel times of buses for different peak periods (AM, Mid-Day and PM). Our analysis included variables such as number of served bus stops, length of route between bus stops, average number of passengers in the bus, average dwell time of buses, and number of intersections between bus stops. We obtained ANN models for travel times by using approximation technique incorporating two separate algorithms: Quasi-Newton and Levenberg-Marquardt. The training strategy for neural network models involved feed forward and errorback processes that minimized the generated errors. We also evaluated the models with a Comparison of the Normalized Squared Errors (NSE). From the results, we observed that the travel times of buses and the dwell times at bus stops generally increased over time of the day. We gathered travel time equations for buses for the AM, Mid-Day and PM Peaks. The lowest NSE for the AM, Mid-Day and PM Peak periods corresponded to training processes using Quasi-Newton algorithm, which had 3, 2 and 5 perceptron layers, respectively. These prediction models could be adapted by transit agencies to provide the patrons with accurate travel time information at bus stops or online.

Over the years, public transit agencies have been trying to improve their operations by continuously evaluating best practices to better serve patrons. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) oversees the transit bus operations in the Washington Metropolitan Area (District of Columbia, some parts of Maryland and Virginia). One practice attempted by WMATA to improve bus travel time and transit reliability has been the implementation of designated bus lanes (DBLs). The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) implemented a bus priority program on selected corridors in the District of Columbia leading to the installation of red-painted DBLs on corridors of H Street, NW, and I Street, NW. This study evaluates the impacts on the performance of transit buses along with the general traffic performance at intersections on corridors with DBLs installed in Washington, DC by using a “before” and “after” approach. The team utilized non-intrusive video data to perform vehicular turning movement counts to assess the traffic flow and delays (measures of effectiveness) with a traffic simulation software. Furthermore, the team analyzed the Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) data provided by WMATA for buses operating on the study segments to evaluate bus travel time. The statistical analysis showed that the vehicles traveling on H Street and I Street (NW) experienced significantly lower delays during both AM (7:00–9:30 AM) and PM (4:00–6:30 PM) peak hours after the installation of bus lanes. The approximation error metrics (normalized squared errors) for the testing dataset was 0.97, indicating that the model was predicting bus travel times based on unknown data with great accuracy. WMATA can apply this research to other segments with busy bus schedules and multiple routes to evaluate the need for DBLs. Neural network models can also be used to approximate bus travel times on segments by simulating scenarios with DBLs to obtain accurate bus travel times. Such implementation could not only improve WMATA’s bus service and reliability but also alleviate general traffic delays.

This research has been commissioned by Eco Fuel Global Limited, a New Zealand-based company, to further evaluate the effects of their fuel-additive product on the tailpipe exhaust emissions of petrol cars. At the time this research was conducted (end of 2018), the product was still in development and had not been released to the market. Prior to the testing in this research, an initial pilot test was done for the same product on a single car (Nissan Pulsar 1998), which showed favourable results, with a reduction in hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen at the tailpipe by more than 70%. The current research included five test cars, all running on RON 95 fuel, with the years of manufacture ranging between 1994 and 2006, and the odometer readings between 112,004 km and 264,001 km. The effects of the fuel-additive product were assessed by comparing the emissions from a car running on standard fuel with the emissions from the same car after it completed a road run (250±20 km) on the additive-treated fuel. The exhaust emissions were measured using the AVL series 4000 Emission Tester, which analyses five components: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOX), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxygen (O2). The most noticeable outcome of using the fuel-additive product was the reduction in the concentration of oxides of nitrogen in the tailpipe exhaust (by up to 27.7%), when compared with the same cars running on standard fuel. In addition, the results showed a decrease in residual oxygen concentration, which normally indicates more complete utilisation of O2 as an oxidising agent. The application of such fuel-additive products could be beneficial for mitigating nitrogen oxides exhaust emissions from petrol vehicles in countries with ageing car fleets. These include New Zealand, which has a relatively high proportion of old cars in use, with no government-run scrappage scheme, and without a mandatory objective emissions testing.
