Streszczenie:
In the mid-low speed Maglev train, the levitation force produced by end electromagnets is influenced by the train speed due to the eddy current effect, especially the front-end electromagnets at high speed. In this paper, the eddy current effect of front-end electromagnets is calculated by an analytical method, which is validated by the Finite Element method (FEM). To compensate a decrease of levitation force, two improved structures of end electromagnet modules are designed and compared. One is the permanent magnet compensation structure, designed by inserting a piece of permanent magnet (PM), and called the PM hybrid structure, and the other is an additional electromagnet compensation structure, which adopts five electromagnets, and called the five-coil structure. In terms of comparison, the five-coil structure can not only produce a high enough levitation force, but can also be easily manufactured. Its effectiveness is verified by the prototype application.

Streszczenie:
Plastic instead of steel technology is one of the important means of automotive lightweighting, which can greatly reduce the weight of the car while ensuring the same performance of the product. For the lightweighting of the automotive all-plastic front-end frame structure, the initial structural design of the front-end frame was carried out by HyperMesh; based on the compromise planning method and entropy weight method, the compromise planning method with weight coefficients was used to unify the planning of each subobjective to obtain the integrated response function, and the minimization of the integrated response function was the objective. The main considerations were the lock limit crash load, the cushion area load, and the pedestrian protection impact load under typical operating conditions, the shape optimization, and topology optimization, respectively. The mass of the sheet metal front-end frame was reduced from the original 10.5 kg to 6.8 kg—a weight reduction of 35.24%. The front-end frame was extracted and the mid-plane was repaired by HyperMesh, the complete mid-plane was meshed, loads and properties were added to the mesh, the front-end frame was subjected to static and modal analysis in the OptiStruct module, and the stiffness and intrinsic frequency were verified. The results show that the smallest first-order mode in the modal analysis is 57.38 Hz, which is much larger than the 30 Hz required before design. The fatigue analysis of the front-end frame was then performed using N-code to derive the damage results; it is concluded that its life is 6122 s, much larger than the specified 1200 s. Through the verification of the relevant resonance test, it is judged that the performance of the test part meets the actual requirements comprehensively by checking the status after the test.

Streszczenie:
Model updating methods can be adopted to improve the correlation level between the finite element model of a spot welded structure and its test model. However, in the presence of contact interfaces in the vicinity of the welded areas, improving the correlation level is problematic and challenging. An approach for correlating the finite element model of a welded structure with contact interfaces using finite element model updating and modal testing is proposed. The proposed approach was tested on a car front-end module structure that consisted of nine components and 76 resistance spot-welded joints used to assemble the components. CWELD and CELAS1 element connectors were used to represent the spot-welded joints and contact interfaces in the finite element modelling and updating. This approach was applied successfully to predict the modal parameters of the car spot-welded front-end module. The total error of the initial finite element model of the structure was reduced from 27.13% to 5.75%. The findings of this work suggest that the proposed approach has a great potential for use in investigating the dynamic behaviour of various spot-welded structures without a significant decline in accuracy.

Safety of rail vehicles is an important feature of sustainable public transport. Proofs of an effort in that area are new recommendations and regulations from the expert commission (WG2 of the Technical Committee CEN / TC 256) regarding trams and light rail vehicles aimed at vulnerable road users. Additional requirements on tram safety can be requested by the vehicle operator and/or city. Pedestrian safety measures can be adopted from the automotive sector utilising the protection principles from Regulation EC No. 78/2009, ECE/UN regulations, and EuroNCAP tests. The purpose of this publication is to introduce a simplified testing method for the tram front end with respect to pedestrian head-on collisions. Testing methods based on segment impactors were generally accepted. The wrap-around distance defines the assessment of vehicle impact areas. A mathematical model was created to compare the results of the full-scale tests and the segment tests done by the standard and simplified aluminium head impactors. The tram front-end design can be tested using this alternate method, based on a simple impactor and easy methodology, providing an efficient tool to inspire both the tram manufacturers and vehicle operators to improve the vulnerable road users’ safety in city traffic.

This article presents the design activities of an automotive component to be produced using a recyclable cleavable-epoxy Matrix Composite and Basalt-Derived Mineral Fibres. The material innovations are being studied within project C2CC (www.c2cc-project.eu), aimed at satisfying latest EU directives regarding end-of-life reuse and C-footprint reduction. The main targets are the weight reduction, obtained employing materials with lower footprint, namely a biomass derived epoxy and a cradle-to-cradle recyclable mineral fiber, that is a fibre that (differently from carbon fibre) can be remelted to long fibre with no decrease in mechanical specifications [1]. For recycling both the resin and the fibre, a the cleavable hardener was adopted [2] developed by Connnora Inc (US), which avoids the need of pyrolysis to recover and recycle the fibers from prepreg scraps and end-of-life components. The main project demonstrator is the front bonnet of segment A vehicle FIAT 500 Abarth. One approach to reach the component expected performances is using the semifinished composite materials (prepregs) produced by the project to manufacture a final structural sandwich. From the modelling point of view, this work carries out a multiscale approach starting from the basic constituents of skin and core and ending with the model at the mesoscale of the specimens of the sandwich. The simulation activity was conducted considering the possible recyclable sandwich cores, and the comparison aims at selecting the optimal ones for this specific automotive component.

Magnesium is increasingly becoming an attractive alternative to steel, aluminum, and polymer composites for vehicle weight reduction due to its ability to meet vehicle performance requirements. To meet the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standard and to maximize the weight reduction of vehicles in the coming years, the magnesium applications are expected to increase significantly in both structural and powertrain components where material creep resistance is required. This first half of the paper will give an overview of recent automotive magnesium R&D programs including Light Metal Cast, Magnesium Powertrain Cast Components, and Structural Cast Magnesium Development supported by the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) and the US Department of Energy. The USCAR is the umbrella organization of DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company and General Motors, which was formed in 1992 to further strengthen the technology base of the US automotive industry through cooperative, pre-competitive research. During the last decade, the magnesium foundry industry has grown, yet the material and manufacturing process costs of magnesium die-casting has impeded large-scale implementation into the automotive industry. As a result, Ford Motor Company initiated a Cost Reduced Magnesium Die Castings Using Heated Runners (CORMAG) program in partnership of the Advanced Technology Program of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. The second half of this paper will briefly present the program goal, progress and its impact. In addition, this paper will present some magnesium applications, including a 2004 Ford F-150 light truck Front End Support Assembly and a 2005 Ford GT instrument panel structure.

New technological and packaging solutions are more and more being employed for power semiconductor switches in an automotive environment, especially the SiC- and GaN-based ones. In this framework, new front-end and back-end solutions have been developed, and many more are in the design stage. New and more integrated power devices are useful to guarantee the performances in electric vehicles, in terms of thermal management, size reduction, and low power losses. In this paper, a GaN-based system in package solution is simulated to assess the structure temperature submitted to a Joule heating power loss. The monolithic package solution involves a half-bridge topology, as well as a driver logic. A novel integrated electromagnetic and thermal method, based on finite element simulations, is proposed in this work. More specifically, dynamic electric power losses of the copper interconnections are computed in the first simulation stage, by an electromagnetic model. In the second stage, the obtained losses’ geometrical map is imported in the finite element thermal simulation, and it is considered as the input. Hence, the temperature distribution of the package’s copper traces is computed. The simulation model verifies the proper design of copper traces. The obtained temperature swing avoids any thermal-related reliability bottleneck.

In the automotive structure, there are different components that utilise aluminium alloy (AA) sheets and it is used widely in the car body-in-white which comprise bumpers and the crash box structure at the front end of the car which specifically designed to withstand the event of collision. As the structures are also experiencing dynamic loading, it were also a concern for the structures to show satisfied modal properties. In this study, the modal properties of the crash box structures are investigated along with the effect of the modal properties towards the crashworthiness behaviour of the structure itself with the approach of finite element analysis. Experimental modal analysis was also done to further validating the finite element analysis of the modal properties. Three different designs of trigger mechanisms are applied towards the crash box structure to observe on both findings. For the connector element, equivalent nodes of both parts of the crash box structures are used. For the results, the correlation from both findings did show that the presence of trigger mechanism did decreased the magnitude of natural frequencies as well as the mode shape as shown by crash box type 3 by 9.50% and for the crashworthiness output, the crashworthiness behaviour of the crash box with trigger mechanisms were better in term of the collisions phases indicated by the primary peak force and the secondary peak force from the force-displacement curve as also shown by crash box structure type 3 with the percentage of 22.59%. The study does shows that the stiffness and mass distribution due to the presence of trigger mechanism do affect the modal properties of a structure as well as its crashworthiness output.

In order to make up for the shortcomings of independent sensors and provide more reliable estimation, a multi-sensor fusion framework for simultaneous localization and mapping is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point cloud is screened in the front-end processing to eliminate abnormal points and improve the positioning and mapping accuracy. Secondly, for the problem of false detection when the LiDAR is surrounded by repeated structures, the intensity value of the laser point cloud is used as the screening condition to screen out robust visual features with high distance confidence, for the purpose of softening. Then, the initial factor, registration factor, inertial measurement units (IMU) factor and loop factor are inserted into the factor graph. A factor graph optimization algorithm based on a Bayesian tree is used for incremental optimization estimation to realize the data fusion. The algorithm was tested in campus and real road environments. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can realize state estimation and map construction with high accuracy and strong robustness.

Streszczenie:
Nowadays, occupant safety becomes one of the most important research area and the automotive industry increased their efforts for enhancing the safety of the vehicles. The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of vehicle dynamics control systems (VDCS) on both the collision of the vehicle body and the kinematics behaviour of the vehicle's occupant. In this work, a novel vehicle dynamics/crash mathematical model is proposed and developed to co-simulate the crash event with the VDCS. This model is achieved using the novel approach of integrating front-end structure and vehicle dynamics mathematical models. The proposed mathematical model integrates both anti-lock braking systems (ASS) and active suspension control (ASC) systems alongside with crash structure modelling. This model is developed by generating its equations of motion and solving them numerically, this approach is used due to its quick and accurate analysis. In addition, a new multi-body occupant mathematical model is developed to capture the occupant kinematics before and during the collision. Validations of the proposed mathematical models are achieved to ensure their accuracy by comparing the simulated results with other real crash test data and former models results. The validation analysis of the vehicle and occupant models shows that the comparison results are well matched and the models are valid and can be used for different crash scenarios. The numerical simulation results are divided into two parts for vehicle and occupant models, respectively. Related to the vehicle model, it is shown that the mathematical model is flexible and useful for optimization studies. The results show that the deformation of the front-end structure is reduced, the vehicle body pitching and yawing angles are notably reduced, and the vehicle pitching acceleration is greatly reduced. Related to the occupant model, it is shown that the VDCS does have a significant effect on the rotations of the occupant's chest and head owing to its effect on the vehicle pitching. In addition, the occupant's deceleration is also slightly decreased and the occupant safety is improved.

The partitioning of a system can and will dictate the creative space for a designer or engineer. This thesis will analyze how using a new automotive architecture known as a Front End Module (FEM) can affect a limited specific subset of stakeholders. Through the use of interviews of subject matter experts, literature research and the use of System Design Management tools, an in depth analysis will be done on the FEM and how it affects the craftsmanship, damageability and assembly attributes. It will be shown how the craftsmanship attribute can be improved through the strategic use of FEM's to allow for a feed-forward system where build data are incorporated into upcoming FEM builds. Even with this advantage, the FEM architecture will not negatively impact the damageability attribute or assembly attribute if the proper design cues and strategies are followed. The FEM will also be intensely analyzed using the tools from the MIT SDM program where it will be evaluated as an architecture itself through the specific and targeted intent and beneficiary breakdown. The analysis will also include an Object/Process Mapping analysis where it will be proposed that the true customer of the automotive front end is not the individual that purchased the vehicle but rather the visual society as a whole. Finally, a managerial approach will be taken for the analysis of the inherent and inevitable supplier relationship that is required with using this FEM architecture. Interviews were conducted with two suppliers of OEM's and their common road blocks will be analyzed such as lack of holistic thinking or failure to understand the role of the system integrator. Proposed next steps will be laid out to address these barriers in order to open the communication channels between the supply base and the Original Equipment Manufacturers.

Streszczenie:
System dynamics modelling has been used for around 40 years to address complex, systemic, dynamic problems, those often described as wicked. But, system dynamics modelling is not an exact science and arguments about the most suitable techniques to use in which circumstances, continues. The nature of these wicked problems is investigated through a series of case studies where poor situational awareness among stakeholders was identified. This was found to be an underlying cause for management failure, suggesting need for better ways of recognising and managing wicked problem situations. Human cognition is considered both as a limitation and enabler to decision-making in wicked problem environments. Naturalistic and deliberate decision-making are reviewed. The thesis identifies the need for integration of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Case study results and a review of the literature led to identification of a set of principles of method to be applied in an integrated framework, the aim being to develop an improved way of addressing wicked problems. These principles were applied to a series of cases in an action research setting. However, organisational and political barriers were encountered. This limited the exploitation and investigation of cases to varying degrees. In response to a need identified in the literature review and the case studies, a tool is designed to facilitate analysis of multi-factorial, non-linear causality. This unique tool and its use to assist in problem conceptualisation, and as an aid to testing alternate strategies, are demonstrated. Further investigation is needed in relation to the veracity of combining causal influences using this tool and system dynamics, broadly. System dynamics modelling was found to have utility needed to support analysis of wicked problems. However, failure in a particular modelling project occurred when it was found necessary to rely on human judgement in estimating values to be input into the models. This was found to be problematic and unacceptably risky for sponsors of the modelling effort. Finally, this work has also identified that further study is required into: the use of human judgement in decision-making and the validity of system dynamics models that rely on the quantification of human judgement.

High boost DC/DC voltage conversion is always required in a power electronic interface for certain battery-powered electrical devices. However, a conventional boost converter operates with a large duty cycle for such high voltage gain, which results in increased power consumptions and low reliability problems. To solve this issue, a new battery-powered integrated boost converter for automotive audio amplifier is presented. The proposed converter uses an interleaved structure consisting of two phases. In the first phase, a conventional boost converter is employed, and in the second phase, the inverted version of this circuit is used. With this technique, a higher boost voltage gain can be achieved compared with conventional two-phase interleaved boost converters. A derivation of the operating principles of the proposed converter, analyzes of its topology, and the closed-loop control design are performed in this study. Furthermore, simulations and experiments are also performed using a battery input voltage of 12V for a 120W circuit. A reasonable duty cycle is selected to achieve an output voltage of 60V. Finally, the proposed converter is applied with the automotive audio amplifier to verify its feasibility. The measured maximum conversion efficiency of the converter is 98.7%, and the efficiency at full load is 89.1%.

The Rectangle Tree Grammar (RTG) algorithm is a method for generic RNA secondary structure prediction. Though the flexibility brought by this algorithm is tremendous, a visualized, user-friendly, and easy-to-use interface is still in need. For this purpose, we have built a web-based interface, WebRTG, which simplies the input and visualizes the output of the RTG algorithm. In this thesis, we shall describe the functionality of the RTG algorithm, as well as the implementation details of the WebRTG interface.

This book presents research on the eastern front of World War I, a subject comparatively eclipsed by scholarly study of the western front. Focusing on the first two years of the war, the volume concentrates primarily on elements of the conflict between the Central Powers (specifically Germany and its ally Austria-Hungary) and pre-revolutionary Russia. The book approaches topics of interest through a tripartite structure, addressing the operational conduct of the war, the combatants’ cultural conceptions of themselves and the enemy, and how the conflict has been understood and commemorated in the years since the end of the war. The volume concludes with a chapter that brings together themes studied throughout the book in a discussion of the potential continuities between the German conduct and perception of war from the First World War to the Second.

Streszczenie:
While the HIV/AIDS pandemic continues, the overall incidence of HIV infections has fallen through use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and multiple prevention modalities. To achieve a durable end to the pandemic and avoid the requirement for daily antiretroviral medication over a lifetime, a safe and effective prophylactic vaccine remains essential. This chapter reviews current advances in prophylactic and therapeutic HIV-1 vaccine strategies and the challenges that lie ahead. Recent success in isolation of potent broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) from infected individuals, the discovery of mechanisms of bnAb induction, and progress in understanding mechanisms of CD8 T-cell killing of HIV-infected cells and the structure of the HIV envelope trimer have opened new strategies for HIV vaccine design. On the therapeutic front, the persistence of HIV reservoirs remains a formidable obstacle to achieving sustained virological remission in HIV-infected individuals after ART is discontinued. Development of a new generation of immune-based therapeutic agents might contribute to a curative intervention. The chapter closes with an overview of ethical challenges in vaccine development and clinical testing.

AbstractThis chapter describes the industrial demonstration of the reuse of recycled fibers obtained by a thermal process. Four demonstrators are described in which both recycled carbon fibers and recycled glass fibers have been incorporated into different matrices. The automotive sector proposes 3 demo cases (Pedal Bracket, Front-end carrier and Cowl top support) with demanding mechanical and thermal requirements. These components were manufactured by injection molding with thermoplastic matrices. The construction sector proposes 1 demo case (Light transmitting single skin profiled sheet.) with mechanical and light transmittance requirements that was manufactured by continuous lamination. It is demonstrated that the incorporation of recycled fiber for these applications is technically possible, fulfilling the requirements demanded by each sector.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia is changing Europe, which is facing a crisis destined to reshape the internal and external relations of the continent, shifting international balances. In this contribution, we show preliminary results on the monitoring of Russian propaganda. In fact, we analysed the content of online newspapers (Strategic Culture Foundation, Global research, News Front, South Front, Katehon, Geopolitics) used as propaganda tools of the Russian government. The newspapers create and amplify the narrative of the conflict, transmitting information filtered by the Kremlin to advance Putin's propaganda about the war. The objective of the work, therefore, is to understand what were the main themes that the Russian media used to motivate the conflict in Ukraine. Specifically, the proposed analysis runs from March 2021, when the Russian military began moving weapons and equipment into Crimea, to the end of March 2022, the day of the first negotiations in Istanbul. In this regard, we used topic modeling techniques to analyse textual content that uncovers the latent thematic structure in document collections to identify emerging topics.

Abstract This paper will summarize the results of a major project of the Automotive Composites Consortium (ACC) to focus on the use of composites in a vehicle front-end structure. The emphasis of the project was to replace the entire steel front structure of a production automobile with a molded composite front structure. The project focused on the development of a completely new reinforcement architecture which emphasized production feasible preforming methods: triaxially braided glass fibers over foam cores make up the upper and lower rails and the connecting panel can be formed from either thermoformed continuous strand mat or directed fiber, and utilized an Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) process. The front structure of the vehicle was redesigned and replaced with production-feasible composite components designed for crash energy management requirements as well as other overall structural considerations. The paper will describe the many design, analysis and test phases of the project which led up to a successful barrier test to verify structural crashworthiness. A fully dressed and instrumented vehicle was built up to incorporate the composite front structure and the vehicle was barrier crash tested at 56 kph. The vehicle passed the test — all performance measures were well within the Federal MVSS requirements — and all but one measure yielded improved performance over the all-steel production vehicle. In addition, the composite parts are 25% lighter than the steel parts they replace.

Streszczenie:
The fuzzy front end (FFE) of new product development (NPD) is a term that refers to the early stages of the innovation process. This paper investigates the FFE in the automotive industry and addresses the challenges of working in this phase of the innovation process, as well as the academic definition of the FFE relative to the real world. Two parts of the innovation process have been identified and characterized as FFE: the concept-work within satellite front-end departments and the work within the pre-development phase of the vehicle new product development process. It has been identified that one of the greatest challenges related to working in the FFE is developing viable concepts that will “sell” internally. Estimating and conveying the overall value of the final product in terms of costs and customer benefits are two of the key elements that make it difficult to achieve internal “buy in”. Furthermore, it is argued that the most common academic perception of the FFE seem to be inadequate since it only concerns work that ends with a go/no-go decision whether to continue into development or not. Consequently, it fails to capture early-stage development work of transformational innovations, where the decision of development has already been made and the uncertainty is related to the execution of the work — and — not the outcome. Semi-structured interviews with a total of eleven employees at seven different automotive OEMs form the basis for the conclusions made herein.

Abstract The quest for lighter crash energy absorbing automotive structures has increased the use, parallel with other materials, of the 5xxx sheet and 6xxx extruded aluminum structures. These aluminum structures, when properly designed and joined, are able to demonstrate a very high crash energy absorbing capability. This paper summarizes the CAE and development work performed in the design of the front end structure of a four door C-class space frame aluminum vehicle. Component and system CAE modeling of the front end were conducted under NCAP’s 35 mph full frontal impact using rigid body dynamic, nonlinear beam finite element and stability codes. Component loads versus crash distances and system deceleration versus time responses were computed. A 3D spring mass model was built for the front end structure using the rigid body and finite element code MADYMO. Spring characteristics for each component, derived from test data and component CAE models, were input into the MADYMO model. The deceleration-time response generated by the MADYMO model was used as input for the sled testing. The effects of four parameters were studied and discussed in this paper. These parameters are the steering column angle, IP, Pyro Buckle Pretensioner and airbag vent size. Dummy HIC; chest deceleration; neck shear, tension, compression, flexion and extension; femur load, pelvis acceleration and displacement; retractor load; shoulder belt load; lap belt load and other injury numbers, measured from sled test, are summarized and discussed in this paper.

Recent low emission, lightweight, safety requirements, automotive manufacturers are implementing lighter and stronger materials and new manufacturing processes into body structural components. Typical widely used forming process in automotive body structures is stamping process. Other forming processes currently used in body structural applications are hydroforming, Rollforming and hot stamping processes. Initially, hydroforming process was used for chassis applications. Few applications of chassis are cross members, engine cradle, instrument panel (IP) beams, and bumper beams. Recently, a few automotive manufacturers are already implemented the hydroforming process into front end structures. Hydroform process gives more part consolidation, and perhaps even weight reduction. However, depending on applications some brackets may be needed to attach other components. Some of the issues related to bracket attachments can be avoided in the design phase. Audi A2, and Chrysler Pacifica have implemented roof rails in the body structures arena. Latest developments are even pushing the hydroforming process into High Strength Steels arena. Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky implemented Dual Phase 600 material on the chassis rails. In this paper, current trends of hydroforming process with advanced high strength steels (AHSS) will be discussed. Hydroforming process involves, bending, preforming (low pressure), and final forming (high pressure) with mechanical properties of DP780 material at various stages of the hydroforming process will be discussed.

Abstract Composite materials are being considered for use in the front end structures of vehicles to help reduce overall vehicle mass and, thus, improve fuel efficiency. Acceptance of composite material in structural members will depend on their ability to do crash energy management. Numerical simulations can greatly aid in the design of these critical structures and reduce the number of crash tests. A new finite element, which is based on laminated plate theory with cubic zig-zag approximations, was developed to model the relevant mechanics that occur in composite materials during crash events. The element was cast in the internal force format for use with explicit integration solvers. In the plate theory, the in-plane displacement fields in a laminate are assumed to be piecewise cubic functions and vary in a zig-zag fashion through the thickness of the laminate. The zig-zag functions are obtained by satisfying the continuity of transverse shear stresses at layer interfaces. This in-plane displacement field assumption accounts for discrete layer effects without increasing the number of degrees of freedom as the number of layers is increased. The transverse normal strain predictions are improved by assuming a constant variation of transverse normal stress through the thickness in a laminate. The finite element is developed with the topology of an eight-noded brick. Each node has five engineering degrees of freedom, three translations and two rotations. Thus, this element can be conveniently implemented into general purpose finite element codes. Consistent and lumped mass matrices are derived. The developed element is implemented into Argonne National Laboratory’s in-house code, NEPTUNE, which utilizes explicit direct integration method. In NEPTUNE the internal force vector is calculated from the developed element at each time step. Numerical performance of the current element is investigated in this research.

Abstract Testing of components is a usual method to evaluate structures, joining methods, and materials prior to full scale testing. Ambient temperature dynamic crush testing was performed on steel and composite sub-component front frame rails to compare the energy absorption and evaluate crush behavior. The sub-component composite frame rails were fabricated from two parts, an upper and lower, and bonded using three adhesives: Ashland polyurethane, Lord epoxy, and 3M epoxy. Prior to the dynamic test of the rails, single lap shear coupon tests were performed at ambient temperature and elevated temperature, 135°C, to evaluate relative bond strength of these adhesives. Testing was performed at elevated temperature because adhesives used for structural bonding in automotive, specifically under-hood, applications can be subjected to elevated temperatures. All three adhesives tested showed reduced bond strength at elevated temperatures. At room temperature, the Ashland urethane and Lord epoxy adhesives were observed to have comparable higher bond strength with the composite-to-composite lap shear coupons compared to the 3M epoxy. However, the crush failure mode for the composite tubes was confined to the substrate and the mean crush load was independent of the adhesive used for fabrication. Progressive crushing of the rail specimens was observed for all specimens tested. The amount of energy absorbed and crush mode for each rail design depended on its structural and material characteristics. The steel specimen absorbed energy by localized buckling in an accordion crush mode. The composite specimens absorbed energy by fracturing the composite matrix, delamination, fracture of the reinforcement fibers, and friction between the fracture and crushing surfaces. The crushing process of the steel rail was initiated by fabricated corrugations in the rail comers at the front, or impact, end of the rail. The composite rail crush event was initiated with an aluminum plug trigger designed to cause the composite rail to split at the comers with fracture of the composite matrix and delamination of the composite plies. Glass fibers were observed to fracture primarily at the tube corners. Fiber fracture elsewhere was infrequent. Close examination of the bonded joint fracture surface showed extensive fiber tear-out indicating that the failure was in the composite, not the adhesive. Mean crush load for the steel rail was 60% higher than the average mean load for the composite rails. The peak load for the steel rail was 71% higher than the average peak load for the composite rails. Specific energy absorption (SEA) of the steel rail was calculated to be 6.34 kJ/kgm compared with an average of 10.5 kJ/kgm for the composite rails.

largest world producer of automotive vehicles. The Mexican experience is part of the more general case of the “integrated peripheries.” The development of these cannot be accounted for separately from the developments occurring in its core country. Unlike the core-periphery literature, however, our analysis emphasizes that the various clusters of cores and integrated peripheries are not alike. In the case under study, the core has been systematically lagging behind the main transformations pioneered by its competitors. The paper traces the evolution of the Mexican automotive industry, emphasizing the difficulties faced by a late-comer country in developing an independent industry, and the importance of policy choices as well as the macroeconomic context in affecting its development. NAFTA represents the culmination of an integration process that has profoundly transformed the structure of the Mexican automotive industry, deepening its dependence on the US market. While there is no doubt that it has contributed to the spectacular growth of the Mexican auto industry, whether it also increased its resilience or, rather, its dependence is still an open question. This issue is particularly relevant in view of the transformations that are taking place in the automotive sector and in the geopolitical scenario. These include the end of NAFTA and the advent of USMCA, the entry of powerful competitors into the global market, and the transition to electric and autonomous vehicles, which all entail risks and opportunities. The lens of the centre-periphery relationship can help to understand the present integration of North America and its future direction.
