Due to the complexity of the Automotive Electromagnetic Compatibility legislation in force, this article aims to describe a simplified overview of several technical standards relating to conducted immunity tests on electronic sub-assemblies, where communication lines are involved. The discussed automotive standards reported in this article are: ISO 11452-1 and ISO 11452-4 for continuous narrowband electromagnetic fields immunity test, bulk current injection and tubular wave coupler, IEC 61000-4-5 for immunity against surge events, IEC 61000-4-4 for electrical fast transient/burst events immunity, ISO 10605 for electrostatic discharge events immunity, ISO 7637-2 and ISO 7637-3 for transient disturbances events immunity. For each cited standard, disturbance bandwidth evaluation was performed. Practical examples are reported, with analysis and discussion of some of the adoptable disturbance countermeasures applicable on controlled area network communication lines, and possible design advantages and disadvantages with different types of filtering and suppression circuit solutions.

This research was conducted to study the improvement of students’ understanding of automotive electrical system by applying automotive electrical multimedia. The multimedia was developed and validated by automotive and multimedia experts before being applied in teaching and learning processes. The research design was a single group pretest-posttest design with three field testing. The results showed that in the preliminary field testing, the students’ understanding increased by 32.55%; in the main field testing, the understanding was up to 64.89%; and in the operational field testing, the understanding became 77.36%. This indicates that automotive multimedia could increase the students’ understanding of automotive electrical system significantly.

The high increase of power electronic devices use (speed control, lighting, heating, automotive, etc...) requires the electrical, thermal and electromagnetic behavior studies. In this paper we developed a model to predict the conducted EMI level in a DC/DC converter. Measurement methodology was done using a network analyzer in order to evaluate the equivalent impedance model of each converter element. The full circuit model is then implemented in the Saber® simulation tool using time domain simulation followed by fast Fourier transformation (FFT) in the frequency range 150 KHz -100 MHz. A comparison between simulation results and those obtained by measurements is used to validate the developed model.

Common mode (CM) electromagnetic interference (EMI) has been a difficult subject in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) analysis and design of power converters for electric vehicles (EV) because of its complex formation mechanism and hidden propagation path. This paper studies a new mechanism of CM conducted emission caused by the leakage flux of a toroidal inductor in the main circuit of a boost DC/DC converter. The stray magnetic source and the CM inducted loops are firstly identified out by simulation analysis and experiments. Then a comprehensive conducted emission circuit model including magnetic coupling parameters is built to explain this CM EMI formation mechanism. Finally, several effective magnetic coupling suppression methods are proposed and verified, such as changing the installation angle of the inductor and the shape of the magnetic core. The research results are helpful to the EMC understanding and design of power electronic converters.

Abstract. The fact of reduced development time in the automotive sector requires a change in the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) validation of electronic components. To increase the development time of automotive components, e.g. sensors or electronic control units (ECUs), it is mandatory to verify the EMC behavior of the integrated circuit (IC) itself in an early development stage simultaneous to the development process of the entire ECU into which it is embedded. The conducted IC EMC tests emission as well as immunity is realized with a specific test printed circuit board (PCB) which is built according to the guidelines of the Bosch, Infineon, Siemens VDO Specification (BISS, 2007). The measurement results of these EMC tests are affected by the test PCB itself. To deduce the application requirements of the component from the application circuit of the test PCB it is necessary to consider this influence by the printed circuit board. The text at hand gives an overview on how far the emission results are adulterated by the used test PCB. The presented method also grants a validation of the disturbance voltage directly at the IC pin considering the application circuit.

It is evident that most rubber components in the automotive industry are subjected to repetitive loading. Vigorous research is needed towards improving the safety and reliability of the components. The study is conducted on an automotive rubber jounce bumper with a rubber hardness of 60 IRHD. The test is conducted in displacement controlled environment under compressive load. The existing models by Kim, Harbour, Woo and Li are adopted to predict the fatigue life. The experimental results show strong similarities with the predicted models.

Due to increasing weight of electrical component and wiring harnesses in a vehicle contrary to the demand of light constructed vehicles as well as the constantly increasing and fluctuating price of copper compared to aluminium’s stable and far lower price, the use of aluminium conductors as an alternative have been promoted.  This thesis work lay theoretical research of the available methods used for electrical connection of aluminium conductors in order to increase the knowledge about the available termination techniques.  Due to aluminium’s characteristics such as lower conductivity and strength, tendency to form oxides and relax over time, differences in thermal expansion coefficient and high potential for galvanic corrosion, there is a risk of deterioration and degradation of the connection if the termination of aluminium conductors is not done correctly without being aware of the challenges when it comes to aluminium connection.  The founded solutions are different welding and soldering techniques such as friction welding, ultrasonic welding, resistance welding, plasma soldering and many other modifications of conventional crimp.  A robust termination system that faces all those challenges and ensure a reliable connection during the entire life length of the vehicle and in order to inhibit corrosion different type of sealing of the contact interface will be required.  In order to evaluate the performance of the founded connection method, testing with evaluation of, tensile strength of conductor to contact attachment, tightness demand, corrosion resistance, vibration and heat evolution at the contact attachment have to be conducted.

This thesis addresses in the conducted immunity test and analysis of controller area network module board for automotive electronics. Two types of conducted immunity tests are performed. The first type named conduction and coupling transient wave test follows the IEC 61000-4-4 and ISO 7637-2 standards, which describe the electrical fast transient/burst immunity test and the electrical transient conduction from conduction and coupling along supply lines, respectively. The second type called the conduction and coupling continuous wave immunity test follows the ISO 11452-4 standard, which describes the electrical disturbances for the Road vehicles - component testing produced by the induced bulk current injection from the narrowband radiated electromagnetic energy. Under IEC 61000-4-4 standard, the power supply with four different test voltages (0.5kV、1 kV、2 kV and 4 kV) and transient repetition frequency of 5 KHz are established in the conducted EFT/B immunity test. Refer to ISO 7637-2 standard, the transient interference tests for the CS8972 CAN Bus test boards are performed. Five different transient waveforms with the highest voltage levels are measured and analyzed. The goals for this thesis not only provide the testing results but also propose the protection solutions in reducing the interference and keeping the normal operation status for those DUTs. The BCI test following the ISO 11452-4 standard demonstrates that the continuous-waves from four different current levels are coupled to the signal transmission line of the CS8972 CAN bus. The testing frequencies ranged from 1MHz to 200MHz are performed since the operation frequency of the power amplifier is limited to 200MHz. Besides, the common-mode rejection filter is proposed to suppress the common mode noise in the high speed transmission system. From 2.8GHz to 8.8GHz, the insertion loss is less than -15dB. The overall size for the designed common-mode rejection filter is 0.21λg×0.23λg. The bandwidth ratio of the rejection band is about 103%. Both simulation and measurement results are in good agreement.

After years of hard work, the automobile parts and components industry of Taiwan automobile has not been trapped by the scale of Taiwan's automobile niche market. In recent years, the threshold for breakthrough in the industry has become a member of the international automaker's international parent division system. The industry also surpassed the output value of NT$192.1 billion for the first time to exceed the output value of the automobile industry and become an implicit champion. This study focuses on the overall ethnic groups of the automotive component industry of Taiwan Automotive and includes the analysis of the Taiwan automotive component market and the automotive electronics component manufacturing industry to understand the changes in market structure and vendor behavior and operating performance, and analyzes in accordance with SWOT and 4P detailed analysis. Industry's vendor behavior and competition strategy. Simultaneous use of Porter's Five Forces Analysis Integrated SWOT analysis combined with the Eisenhower Cross Rule Program Observe the development direction of the industry. Research conclusions: Sub-category of automotive subcomponents of Taiwan's automobile industry. The sub-category of automotive sub-components in Taiwan and auto electronic component markets has been analyzed by SWOT and 4P. In the mature period and growth period, but facing the next generation of new self-drivers, it is necessary to think about the concept of group-sharing resources sharing and the concept of exotic innovation to once again meet international challenges to meet the challenges of the next generation.

This chapter considers how the increase in numbers of African American men at the workplace brought differing and contentious visions of manhood to the automotive factory. White men, who had long dominated the better jobs, divided into two groups: those who strove for the respectability of high-paid union jobs and those who resented others, fearing the loss of their exclusive white privileges. When black men fought for workplace equity, the more conservative whites conducted racial hate strikes to protect traditionally “white” jobs. In reaction, African American workers conducted what might best be labeled “pride strikes” to gain access to better jobs and later to improve the inequitable situation of black women in the automobile factories. These workplace struggles involved robust clashes over differing visions of manhood.

The book discusses the EU competition law regime and practice in respect of vertical agreements. The concept of vertical agreements is not limited to distribution arrangements, but covers also supply and subcontracting scenarios. Particular attention is paid to e-commerce and the sector-specific rules applicable to the automotive industry (Regulation 461/2010). The book covers systematically the various aspects of Regulation 330/2010, which is the European block exemption regulation generally applicable to vertical agreements, as well as the Vertical Guidelines related thereto. In addition to a systematic presentation of the relevant legal concepts, the book provides practical guidance and concrete cases. Such cases include European precedents and decisions adopted in national competition law proceedings. The authors have inserted concrete examples stemming from their private practice in the field. The book offers concrete guidance for vertical agreements falling outside of the scope of Regulation 330/2010 where the parties may need to conduct a so-called self-assessment. It describes the economic theories underpinning such assessment and presents the relevant economic concepts in a digestible manner. The book is intended as an easy reference tool for private practitioners and legal scholars. AbstractIncreasing product variety, shorter product life cycles, and the ongoing transition towards electro-mobility demand higher flexibility in automotive production. Especially in the final assembly, where most variant-dependent processes are happening, the currently predominant concept of flowing line assembly is already been pushed to its flexibility limits. Line-less assembly systems break up the rigid line structures by enabling higher routing and operational flexibility using individual product routes that are takt-time independent. Hybrid approaches consider the combination of line and matrix-structured systems to increase flexibility while maintaining existing structures. Such system changes require a high planning effort and investment costs. For a risk-minimized potential evaluation, discrete-event simulation is a promising tool. However, the challenge is to model the existing line assembly concept and line-less assembly for comparison. In this work, a comprehensive scenario analysis based on real assembly system data is conducted to evaluate the potential of line-less assembly in the automotive industry. Within the simulation, an online scheduling algorithm for adaptive routing and sequencing is used. Based on an automated experiment design, several system parameters are varied full-factorially and applied to different system configurations. Various scenarios considering worker capabilities, station failures, material availability, and product variants are simulated in a discrete-event simulation considering realistic assumptions. Results show that the throughput and utilization can be increased in the hybrid and line-less systems when assuming that the stations will have failures and the assumption of an unchanged order input.

AbstractDigital Supply Chain Twins (DSCT) are gaining more and more attention both in science and in practices. They are considered to be one of the most disruptive technologies in logistics and supply chain management. In the literature, there are a variety of DSCT benefits in the case of planning and control a logistics system. Some of these potentials could also be highly suitable for the use case of sustainable and resource-efficient logistics, which, however, have been insufficiently explored in research so far. This paper will investigate to what extent the DSCT can be used to enable sustainable network planning and which potentials the DSCT implies for the predictive planning within logistics systems. Building on a literature review and interviews with industry experts a case study was conducted at a business partner in the automotive industry.

AbstractGaps, fibre misalignment and foreign objects in dry fibre tape layups are detrimental towards the final mechanical properties of carbon fibre composite parts. Eddy current sensors can be used to inspect layups for the named defects. In comparison to optical inspection methods, eddy current measurements are capable of inspecting not only the top layer but multiple plies at once. In the literature, two different methods have been proposed for this inspection. One is the scanning method, where the sensor is moved over the specimen and creates a grey-scale image. The pixel brightness correlates with the layup’s local electrical conductivity. The other method for the local inspection is the polar method, where the sensor is rotated on a single spot to detect the fibre orientation. In this work, both methods were conducted with the same inspection system, which is based on a collaborative robotic arm. It has been shown that the scanning method can identify gaps and foreign objects out of metal. The fibre orientation can be identified by the rotational method with a precision of 0.16$$^{\circ }$$ ∘ . The exact positioning of the probe remains the main challenge for this inspection system. However, a combination of both methods promises to provide a reliable inspection method for the most common defect in a dry fibre layup.

AbstractOrganizations that manufacture high volumes of complex products (e.g., pharmaceutical, automotive, food) require specific strategies to ensure efficient processing of parts and a sustainable level of inventory by waste minimization. A review of literature sources revealed how inventory is classified and managed amongst organizations and industries and key challenges that current organizations face with existing inventory management systems. In this paper, these findings are compared against each other to determine best practices and potential shortfalls that should be addressed when trying to manage inventory holistically. A study is then conducted using qualitative data from 15 semi-structured interviews to answer key questions on inventory management based on the findings from the literature survey. Responses are inductively coded and analyzed to reveal the most important factors of inventory management and determine the most prominent themes. A graphical model to represent the findings is also presented. Inventory functional accountability, inventory classification, operational strategies, visual management of inventory data, and efficient processes were some of the key themes known to be critical for effective inventory management and thus illustrated in the graphical model.

AbstractThis chapter explores the status of environmentally friendly practices and the use of recognition, validation and accreditation (RVA) mechanisms to recognise skills in four major sectors of the Nepalese industry—catering, PVC manufacturing, automotive and waste management. A field survey was conducted on 20 enterprises in the aforementioned sectors. The Nepalese industrial sector is in a very early stage of its development and the level of environmental awareness among employers and employees is very low. Although the present status of the Nepalese industrial sector is at a nascent stage in the creation of green jobs, there seems to be potential for the creation of such opportunities in the future. However, to make use of these opportunities, it is necessary to understand workers’ skills and learning needs that will enable them to work in a way to overcome environmental degradation and mitigate climate change. Green skills that promote greater responsibility towards minimising the negative impact of industrial activities are vital for job creation and sustainable development. The recognition of green skills in the workplace and industry is an area for research that could bring green transformation to the Nepalese economy. The joint efforts of government, enterprises, occupational sectors and training providers, as well as international development partners, are important to institutionalise recognition of green skills in enterprises and industry.

This chapter aims at examining Singapore’s capabilities in automotive supply chain. A thorough economic analysis of the automotive industry worldwide has been conducted in this study to identify the potential facilitating and inhibiting factors for automotive supply chain in future. Also, the study discusses the automotive supply chain in Asia Pacific region in detail and its impact on Singapore’s automotive supply chain. Based on the analysis, the study presents several recommendations for Singapore’s participation in automotive supply chain. Specifically, the results of this study suggest that Singapore can build its competence in manufacturing electronic components for automobiles as it is one of the leading semiconductor hubs in the world, a leading logistics port, and is well connected with countries all over the world.

Over the past two decades, the automotive industry has experienced major changes as a result of globalisation, changing customer requirements and environmental legislation. The supplier integration in the new product development process is a significant step in facilitating reduction in the time to market of innovations and reducing costs. The aim of this work is to assess the extent of supplier integration in automotive organisations and to identify what barriers still exist. An exploratory Europe-wide survey was conducted, and 31 usable returns from automotive organisations spread across the EU. The survey confirmed the increasing importance of supplier integration in the automotive industry; however, the practice varies from organisation to organisation. They also indicate that most automobile manufacturers are engaged in functional rather than strategic supplier integration, indicating that the supplier integration is not yet fully developed, but progress in the first tier of suppliers is becoming common.

This chapter presents the details of a lean audit conducted among 25 Indian automotive manufacturing organizations. The audit consists of 59 indices grouped among 20 categories. The study consists of development of comprehensive lean audit procedure, gathering input scores, and grouping the organizations into 7 lean phases. The lean audit investigates the lean adoption and derives the appropriate lean phase. The conduct of the lean audit examines leanness level of organizations and the possible improvement proposals for leanness improvement. The conduct of the survey enables organizations to benchmark with similar organizations from a leanness perspective.

This document is intended to give an overview of the human subject study in a driving simulator that was conducted by the Chair of Traffic and Transportation Psychology (Verkehrspsychologie – VPSY) of the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) to provide the Chair of Automotive Engineering (Lehrstuhl Kraftfahrzeugtechnik – LKT) of TUD with the necessary input for the validation of a stochastic traffic simulation, especially for the parameterization, consolidation, and validation of driver behaviour models. VPSY planned, conducted, and analysed a driving simulator study. The main purpose of the study was to analyse driving behaviour and gaze data at intersections in urban areas. Based on relevant literature, a simulated driving environment was created, in which a sample of drivers passed a variety of intersections. Considering different driver states, driving tasks, and traffic situations, the collected data provide detailed information about human gaze and driving behaviour when approaching and crossing intersections. The collected data was transferred to LKT for the development of the stochastic traffic simulation.

In 2001, the Compressor and Pump Station Technical Committee (CAPSTC) recognized the importance of cylinder level sensing and control to minimize NOx emissions while maintaining optimum engine performance, therefore, a CAPSTC member brought the concept of ion sense to the committee as an alternative to fiber optic pressure sensors for continuous combustion performance monitoring. Derived from automotive technology, ion sense utilizes post ignition ionization measurements from a standard spark plug to monitor the combustions process. Based on successful feasibility tests at Colorado State University�s (CSU) GMV-4, the commercialization team focused their efforts on developing a product for Open Combustion Chamber (OCC) Two Stroke Cycle (2SC) lean burn engines. By 2010, the commercialization team of Advanced Engine Technologies Corporation (AETC), Altronic, and Mecel developed commercial hardware and conducted extensive mapping and long term testing on three different 2SC OCC engines operated by three different companies.

This document is intended to give an overview of the validation of the human subject study, conducted in the driving simulator of the Chair of Traffic and Transportation Psychology (Verkehrspsychologie – VPSY) of the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), as well of the validation of the stochastic traffic simulation developed in the AutoDrive project by the Chair of Automotive Engineering (Lehrstuhl Kraftfahrzeugtechnik – LKT) of TUD. Furthermore, the evaluation process of a C-AEB (Cooperative-Automatic Emergency Brake) system is demonstrated. The main purpose was to compare the driving behaviour of the study participants and the driving behaviour of the agents in the traffic simulation with real world data. Based on relevant literature, a validation concept was designed and real world data was collected using drones and stationary cameras. By means of qualitative and quantitative analysis it could be shown, that the driving simulator study shows realistic driving behaviour in terms of mean speed. Moreover, the stochastic traffic simulation already reflects reality in terms of mean and maximum speed of the agents. Finally, the performed evaluation proofed the suitability of the developed stochastic simulation for the assessment process. Furthermore, it could be shown, that a C-AEB system improves the traffic safety for the chosen test-scenarios.
