The liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry in Australia has a very large installed asset base that is highly automated. This paper explores established, emerging and experimental automations that could materially impact human work in existing LNG facilities. The focus is on automations that assist with physical interventions on the built asset. Riley’s method for assessing the level of automation is used on current and emerging automations in the industry. Use cases demonstrate that as automation increases, the primary focus of the human becomes one of system design, monitoring and intervention. The changing role of the human in this age of automaton has important implications for the development of human work skills for the future: with increasing automation, the nature of work will change. In the future (1) field workers need to supervise and maintain robots, (2) functional specialists need to define and debug robot instruction sets, and (3) system designers need to master the opportunities and challenges in an exciting new field: the robot-human-interface.

The next decade will see a rapid increase in the prevalence of partial vehicle automation, specifically conditional automation (i.e., SAE level 3; SAE, 2018 ). In conditional automation, the expectation is that the user is still receptive to takeover and can disengage while the automation is active, but as the automation approaches its operational limits, or the end of its operational design domain, it issues a request to intervene and the user is expected to retake control. A human–machine interface (HMI) that can safely and effectively transition control is therefore very important. This simulator study investigated how features of the HMI design, specifically feedback about the confidence (i.e., current capability) of the automation influenced transition of control. Participants were assigned to one of three conditions, which received varying amounts of visual and auditory feedback regarding the automation’s confidence. Findings suggest 3-stage auditory-visual feedback about the automation’s confidence may improve subsequent takeover performance compared to 3-stage visual and a control group without feedback. This research demonstrates the potential value of providing more insight into automated feature performance in conditional automation.

ABSTRACT Over the years, many organizations have attempted to automate the Incident Command System (ICS). These attempts have ranged from computerizing T-cards to a nationwide spill operations system. Over time, these systems have had varying degrees of success. While certain inherent reasons exist for not automating ICS, they are outweighed by the tremendous potential of successful automation. The need to produce documentation, the integration of ICS sections, and the rapid change of information all lend themselves to automation. Successful ICS automation does not start with computerizing ICS forms. The hey to automating ICS is to automate both ICS and response processes. In a response effort, many separate and distinct processes occur daily. The requisitioning of resources, the planning and application of the response organization, cost accounting, and the development of an Incident Action Plan (IAP) occur many times during an incident. This paper describes a framework for automating and integrating these processes. This framework offers organizations a road map for successful ICS automation. The poster presentation includes a software demonstration that illustrates the benefits of integrated automation.

Displaying both the strategy that information analysis automation employs to makes its judgments and variability in the task environment may improve human judgment performance, especially in cases where this variability impacts the judgment performance of the information analysis automation. This work investigated the contribution of providing either information analysis automation strategy information, task environment information, or both, on human judgment performance in a domain where noisy sensor data are used by both the human and the information analysis automation to make judgments. In a simplified air traffic conflict prediction experiment, 32 participants made probability of horizontal conflict judgments under different display content conditions. After being exposed to the information analysis automation, judgment achievement significantly improved for all participants as compared to judgments without any of the automation’s information. Participants provided with additional display content pertaining to cue variability in the task environment had significantly higher aided judgment achievement compared to those provided with only the automation’s judgment of a probability of conflict. When designing information analysis automation for environments where the automation’s judgment achievement is impacted by noisy environmental data, it may be beneficial to show additional task environment information to the human judge in order to improve judgment performance.

Studying firm-level adjustments is important for understanding the economic effects of workplace automation. So far, emerging firm-level evidence is focused on robotics and the manufacturing sector. In this paper, we document that the adoption of automation technologies extends beyond manufacturing firms. We identify firm-level automation events and show that automating firms experience faster employment and revenue growth than do nonautomating firms. However, around automation events themselves, employment growth slows markedly. Notably, we find that these effects are similar for manufacturing and nonmanufacturing firms, suggesting that an increasing diffusion of automation technology has important consequences for firms and their workers.

Choosing the right robotic process automation software for business requires careful consideration. Process automation software is becoming increasingly popular among businesses large and small due to its ability to automate routine repetitive tasks. It is designed to reduce errors and make tasks easier and faster, while also allowing employees to focus on more complex and more important work. From streamlining administrative processes to improving customer service, process automation offers a wide range of business benefits. For example, it can help automate back-office functions such as data entry, order processing, and customer service inquiries. This can help reduce the amount of time and resources required to complete these tasks, as well as improve accuracy and eliminate possible errors. In addition, process automation can help improve customer service by automating customer interaction processes such as inquiries and order processing. This can help speed up the process for customers, leading to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty. Process automation can also help businesses save money. By automating routine, repetitive tasks, businesses can reduce their labor costs as fewer employees are required to complete tasks. In addition, process automation can help reduce the amount of time and resources required to complete tasks, resulting in cost savings. When choosing process automation software, such key factors as possibilities of automation, scalability, safety should be considered. In this paper, these key factors are represented under Z- information for multi-criteria decision-making problem. Z- number theory is a very effective tool in great uncertainty conditions. If there are uncertainty conditions in problems solving process it is good using fuzzy logic [1-9]. Keywords: multi-criteria decision making, software selection, process automation, Z information.

Automation of surgical processes (SPs) is an utterly complex, yet highly demanded feature by medical experts. Currently, surgical tools with advanced sensory and diagnostic capabilities are only available. A major criticism towards the newly developed instruments that they are not fitting into the existing medical workflow often creating more annoyance than benefit for the surgeon. The first step in achieving streamlined integration of computer technologies is gaining a better understanding of the SP. Surgical ontologies provide a generic platform for describing elements of the surgical procedures. Surgical Process Models (SPMs) built on top of these ontologies have the potential to accurately represent the surgical workflow. SPMs provide the opportunity to use ontological terms as the basis of automation, allowing the developed algorithm to easily integrate into the surgical workflow, and to apply the automated SPMs wherever the linked ontological term appears in the workflow. In this work, as an example to this concept, the subtask level ontological term “blunt dissection” was targeted for automation. We implemented a computer vision-driven approach to demonstrate that automation on this task level is feasible. The algorithm was tested on an experimental silicone phantom as well as in several ex vivo environments. The implementation used the da Vinci surgical robot, controlled via the Da Vinci Research Kit (DVRK), relying on a shared code-base among the DVRK institutions. It is believed that developing and linking further building blocks of lower level surgical subtasks could lead to the introduction of automated soft tissue surgery. In the future, the building blocks could be individually unit tested, leading to incremental automation of the domain. This framework could potentially standardize surgical performance, eventually improving patient outcomes.

Laboratory automation is currently the main organizational challenge for microbiologists. Automating classic workflows is a strenuous process for the laboratory personnel and a huge and long-lasting financial investment. The investments are rewarded through increases in quality and shortened time to report. However, the benefits for an individual laboratory can only be estimated after the implementation and depending on the classic workflows currently performed. The two main components of automation are hardware and workflow. This review focusses on the workflow aspects of automation and describes some of the main developments during recent years. Additionally, it tries to define some terms which are related to automation and specifies some developments which would further improve automated systems.

Abstract Background Workflow automation, which involves identifying sequences of tasks that can be streamlined by using technology and modern computing, offers opportunities to address the United States health care system's challenges with quality, safety, and efficiency. Other industries have successfully implemented workflow automation to address these concerns, and lessons learned from those experiences may inform its application in health care. Objective Our aim was to identify and synthesize (1) current approaches in workflow automation across industries, (2) opportunities for applying workflow automation in health care, and (3) considerations for designing and implementing workflow automation that may be relevant to health care. Methods We conducted a targeted review of peer-reviewed and gray literature on automation approaches. We identified relevant databases and terms to conduct the searches across sources and reviewed abstracts to identify 123 relevant articles across 11 disciplines. Results Workflow automation is used across industries such as finance, manufacturing, and travel to increase efficiency, productivity, and quality. We found automation ranged from low to full automation, and this variation was associated with task and technology characteristics. The level of automation is linked to how well a task is defined, whether a task is repetitive, the degree of human intervention and decision-making required, and the sophistication of available technology. We found that identifying automation goals and assessing whether those goals were reached was critical, and ongoing monitoring and improvement would help to ensure successful automation. Conclusion Use of workflow automation in other industries can inform automating health care workflows by considering the critical role of people, process, and technology in design, testing, implementation, use, and ongoing monitoring of automated workflows. Insights gained from other industries will inform an interdisciplinary effort by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to outline priorities for advancing health care workflow automation.

Laboratory automation can boost precision and reproducibility of science workflows. However, current laboratory automation systems are difficult to modify for custom applications. Automating new experiment workflows therefore requires development of one-off research platforms, a process which requires significant time, resources, and experience. In this work, we investigate systems to lower the threshold to automation for plant biologists. Our approach establishes a direct connection with a generic motion platform to support experiment development and execution from a computational notebook environment. Specifically, we investigate the use of the open-source tool-changing motion platform Jubilee controlled using Jupyter notebooks. We present the Duckbot, a machine customized for automating laboratory research workflows with duckweed, a common multicellular plant. The Duckbot comprises (1) a set of end-effectors relevant for plant biology, (2) software modules which provide flexible control of these tools, and (3) computational notebooks which make use of these tools to automate duckweed experiments. We demonstrate the Duckbot’s functionality by automating a particular laboratory research workflow, namely, duckweed growth assays. The Duckbot supports setting up sample plates with duckweed and growth media, gathering image data, and conducting relevant data analysis. We discuss the opportunities and limitations for developing custom laboratory automation with this platform and provide instructions on usage and customization.

Today’s business environments face rapid digital transformation, engendering the continuous emerging of new technologies. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is one of the new technologies rapidly and increasingly grabbing the attention of businesses. RPA tools allow mimicking human tasks by providing a virtual workforce, or digital workers in the form of software bots, for automating manual, high-volume, repetitive, and routine tasks. The goal is to allow human workers to delegate their tedious routine tasks to a software bot, thus allowing them to focus on more difficult tasks. RPA tools are simple and very powerful, according to cost-saving and other performance metrics. However, the main challenge of RPA implementation is to effectively determine the business tasks suitable for automation. This paper provides a methodology for selecting candidate tasks for robotic process automation based on user interface logs and process mining techniques.

The city has proved to be the most successful form of human agglomeration and provides wide employment opportunities for its dwellers. As advances in robotics and artificial intelligence revive concerns about the impact of automation on jobs, a question looms: how will automation affect employment in cities? Here, we provide a comparative picture of the impact of automation across US urban areas. Small cities will undertake greater adjustments, such as worker displacement and job content substitutions. We demonstrate that large cities exhibit increased occupational and skill specialization due to increased abundance of managerial and technical professions. These occupations are not easily automatable, and, thus, reduce the potential impact of automation in large cities. Our results pass several robustness checks including potential errors in the estimation of occupational automation and subsampling of occupations. Our study provides the first empirical law connecting two societal forces: urban agglomeration and automation's impact on employment.

This work aimed to identify cognitive skills associated with flight planning, suggest which skills might be susceptible to skill degradation, and investigate the effects of cognitive skill degradation over time. Information automation systems offload cognitive tasks to reduce workload and error. However, the same phenomena seen with physical skill degradation in highly automated aircrafts may also occur when automating cognitive tasks. Two studies were conducted. An applied cognitive task analysis identified cognitive skills in flight planning. An empirical evaluation examined whether some of those skills were susceptible to cognitive skill degradation over time when using automation. Participants were placed into three groups. After conducting a flight planning task manually, groups differed in the next three practice trials: manual, alternating between manual and automation, or only with automation. Finally, all groups conducted the task manually again. Trials were separated by 2 weeks. The automation group showed the most performance degradation and highest workload, while the manual group showed the least performance degradation and least workload. Automation use did not provide the practice needed to mitigate cognitive skill degradation. Analysis of the impacts of information automation on cognitive performance is a first step in understanding the root causes of errors and developing mitigations.

Automation helps humans do manual work easily and the information they get is up-to-date. One of the automation implementations is room rental. Room rentals are currently still not widely done online and reach all over Indonesia. Some room providers only use automation for their own space rentals. Ordering and marketing allow only limited automation within the scope of the provider. The purpose of this research is to design a website-based business space rental system using the prototype method. Research shows that business space reservation information systems can manage business space rental data owned by the owner. The system is also capable of automating orders, so that the owner and tenant do not need to communicate directly or go to the rental location. This research can be used as a reference for the industry in designing a space rental information system
