In order to quickly adapt the production on a production line to the demand, there is a needfor flexibility. A tool designed for this purpose, p-sop, has been developed at UniversityWest. This thesis deals with implementation of p-sop in a demonstrator, and developmentof a framework for priority policies as well as a graphical user interface to p-sop. The prioritypolicies evaluated in the demonstrator did note give an increased efficiency, and thegraphical user interface is shown to be well suited for the demonstrator and p-sop in general.

Office automation systems have become an essential tool for the operation of the modern office. With the emphasis of a modern office being placed on efficiency and ease of communication, office automation systems have become the backbone of successful businesses. COSNET is a prototype office automation system designed and implemented at the Department of the University of Cape Town and runs on Personal Computers that are linked to a NCR UNIX TOWER, which acts as the host. This dissertation investigates the different facilities supported by some of the office automation systems compared in this thesis, and describes the COSNET features. This prototype office automation system supports many of the facilities that are supported by large office automation systems. COSNET allows the user to define any MS-DOS based editor or word processor, and uses a simple editor for the creation of mail. The electronic filing facility allows documents to be created, filed, retrieved and deleted, and thus provides the users with the necessary features for document exchange. A user may set access permissions to each of his documents and may grant other users either read or write access to a specific document. The mail facility lets the user read, file, forward, delete and print a message, and supports classification of mail. A calendar facility is used as an electronic diary and stores all the user's schedules. These schedules may be viewed in either daily, weekly and monthly display modes. Read and write access to the calendar can be set by the user, in order to allow other users to manipulate his schedules. Any MS-DOS based application software can be added to COSNET. This facility allows the COSNET user to configure the office automation system to simulate the office environment. COSNET thus supports most of the necessary features required by an office automation system.

The research goal was to find out the current and possible level of procurement automation and its contribution to less routine and more creative jobs. The goal was accomplished by literature review and data collection via survey. The data collected evaluated enterprises in developing and developed countries. The research hypothesis of developing countries automating more than developed ones was not supported by the data tested via Mann-Whithey U test. The data collected was from 146 respondents from all around the world. Therefore, there are limitations of the conclusions. The thesis and its survey contributes to the knowledge about the level of procurement automation.

Graden av automation inom industrin ökar ständigt, inom fordonstillverkning fasas allt fler produktionsnära personal ut till förmån för automatiska system och robotar. På Scanias hyttfabrik i Oskarshamn är stora delar av produktionen automatiserad och det söks ständigt efter nya möjligheter till effektivisering via automation. Detta examensarbete syftade till att utvärdera om kvalitetsinspektionen efter applicering av grundfärg kan automatiseras. Genom att analysera processen genomfördes utvärderingar av två automatiska inspektionssystem som i dag används inom fordonstillverkning. Historisk data analyserades för att identifiera vad ett potentiellt automatiskt inspektionssystem bör klara av. I samband med detta samlades information in för att identifiera vad dessa inspektionssystem faktiskt klarar av. Detta ställdes emot varandra och föranledde en investeringskalkyl för att ta fram en återbetalningstid, samt för att upptäcka vilka monetära besparingar det går att erhålla via ett automatiskt inspektionssystem. Analys genomfördes där fördelar och nackdelar med både dagens arbetssätt samt ett eventuellt framtida arbetssätt med automatiska system vägdes samman. Dessutom analyserades det till vilken grad kvalitetinspektionsprocessen hos Scania kan automatiseras, och vilka kvalitativa vinningar det leder till. I tillägg återger examensarbetet generella slutsatser på hur automatiska inspektionssystem fungerar samt presenterar resultat på om tekniken i dagsläget är mogen, och till vilken utsträckning. Avslutningsvis presenteras rekommendationer till Scania utifrån möjligheter och potentiella besparingar. Rekommendationen är att inte investera i ett automatiskt inspektionssystem, eftersom examensarbetet kommit fram till att inget av de utvärderade systemen kan operera på en tillfredsställande nivå. Tekniken är det vill säga inte ännu mogen för att automatisera denna typ av process.

In this thesis a method for selecting test cases for test automation is developed and evaluated. Existing methods from the literature has been reviewed and modified resulting in the proposed method, a decision tree containing 23 factors grouped into 8 decision points. The decision tree has been used and evaluated in an industrial setting. The economic benefits were calculated with return on investment and the organisational benefits were measured in a survey at a software producing company. The result was that automated tests, selected with the decision tree, provided economic benefits after 0.5 to 4 years, these tests were also found leading to 3 organisational benefits: less human effort when testing, reduction in cost and allowing for shorter release cycles.

Newspapers are often bundled and packet on pallets to secure transport. Packing thebundles on pallets are often done with an automatic palletizer. For reliable operation,the bundle needed to have a correct position and orientation on the infeed conveyor.Wrong orientation can happen when the bundle is pushed from conveyor to thepalletisers conveyor. The main to reasons is wrong timing that leads to rotation of thebundle and to high pushing force that leads to tumbled bundles. The goal of thisproject is to make a prototype of a system that automatically adapts the pressure andsignal when to push using two laser sensors. One sensor sends a digital signal if laserbreaks, the other measure distance, e.g. bundle hight. The software was developed onan Arduino Uno board, and two interface board was made for voltage levelconversions. The prototype system managed to change pressure for different bundlesizes and timed the pushing signal correctly.

Automation is intended to improve overall building performance. Building Automation Systems (BAS) are attractive and popular due to their promise of increased operational effectiveness. BAS can be optimized and a well-designed and well-implemented BAS is expected to increase a buildings overall appeal and value as a result of improvement to its performance. In order to improve the level of automation in buildings, a measurement tool in the form of a performance index is needed. The goal of this research is to quantify a buildings level of automation-performance. The specific objective is to develop an Automation Performance Index (API) model for evaluating the extent of a buildings automation-performance. A methodology is outlined with ten tasks to accomplish the goals of this research and a criterion for each task is described. An extensive literature research and expert survey are performed to identify the key parameters that influence the performance of BAS. Seminars related to the building automation and commissioning fields were also attended to obtain the views of practitioners, manufacturers experts, as well as scholars in the field of building automation and performance commissioning. A Delphi method of research approach is conducted through a series of interviews and surveys of industry and academia experts. The feedback from experts and the research from literature, industry and academic resources are combined, classified and categorized for identification of significant parameters around which Automation Performance Index (API) model can be defined.

Home automation is the systematic controlling and monitoring of everyday home devices such as lighting, heating, window blinds and appliances (both white goods and home electronics). This report describes how to control and monitor home appliances over IPv6 by using existing home automation hardware and an Internet connected gateway. There are many commercial home automation systems available. However, these are often proprietary and/or designed for limited use. This project seeks to pave the way for IP-enabling home appliances, making such devices part of the Internet. Therefore, these devices can individually be controlled both from within the home and remotely. Internet enabling each of these devices eliminates the need for special Internet connected control units, simplifying home automation and hopefully giving yet another incentive to deploy IPv6 on a larger scale. The practical goal of this project has been to create a virtual, but practically usable, IPv6 home automation system. This has been done using existing simple home automation hardware tied to a gateway relaying uniquely addressed IPv6 command messages to the appropriate device. This gateway's only function will be to translate IPv6 commands to whatever interface the device being controlled is using (this includes translating to and from the appropriate link and physical layers). Using this platform, new applications can be created by enabling the devices to interact without relying on a central control node. The report also describes the basic design ideas of a computer connected interface to also relay information from the home automation system to the Internet.
Hemautomation handlar om att styra och övervaka vanliga funktioner i hemmet såsom belysning, värme, persienner samt apparater såsom vitvaror och hemelektronik. Denna rapport beskriver hur man kan styra och övervaka sådana apparater över IPv6 genom att använda existerande hemautomationssystem och en internetansluten gateway. Det finns många tillgängliga hemautomationssystem men dessa är ofta tillverkarspecifika och/eller bara designade för väldigt specifika syften. Syftet med detta projekt är att bana väg för att få apparater i hemmet att kommunicera via IP och göra dem internetanslutna. På så sätt kan apparaterna styras både inom hemmet men även från andra platser. Genom att göra varje apparat internetansluten krävs ingen central internetansluten styrenhet, vilket skulle göra hemautomation enklare och bidra med ytterligare en bra anledning att implementera IPv6 på större skala. Målet för detta projekt har varit att skapa en virtuell, användbar prototyp av ett hemautomationssystem för IPv6. Detta har gjorts genom att använda existerande hårdvara för hemautomation och en PCbaserad gateway som översätter kontrollkommandon från IPv6 till det hemautomationssystem som används. Detta innebär att överföra data mellan olika länk- och fysiska lager. Genom att använda denna plattform kan man skapa nya applikationer där apparaterna kommunicerar mellan varandra utan att förlita sig på en central styrenhet. Denna rapport beskriver också grunderna för hur ett datorgränssnitt kan överföra information från anslutna apparater i hemmet till Internet.

As a part of Göteborg Energi’s work towards a smarter electric grid, the company has chosen to investigate the possibilities of automation in their middle voltage grid. In Europe, there are example cases where these technologies already are installed which many articles on the CIRED conference 2011 proved. Netcontrol Oy in Finland has, together with Tekla, created an automated SCADA system that Vattenfall in Finland today uses. The grid mainly consists of 10 kV open loop fed city grid and this automation is mainly designed for this type of grid. The intention of the automation is to when a fault occurs, the automation disconnects the faulted cable in the loop and then reconnects, this in as little time as possible in order to not make customers suffer.There are several different theories about how automation can be implemented, the two main principles are local automation and centralized automation. The local automation is implemented at station level with fault detectors that communicate with each other and thus disconnects a fault in the circuit using logic steps. This is the fastest option and Göteborg Energi has already installed several devices in the grid, which could make this option possible to realize. The other alternative is to let the SCADA do the sectionalizing using information from the indicators in the loop. This poses a problem though when the system becomes more complex. The operational staff might have problems with letting the SCADA make its own decisions and thereby lose control over the events in the grid. What the system could do instead is to make a suggestion on how the operational staff should handle the situation. However, the fault durations in this case will end at its best around 2-5 minutes and this makes the customer suffer for a longer time than the earlier principle.Hence, local automation is recommended, partly because it is today implemented in the grid and also because the fault duration is much shorter. This option can, with today’s technology disconnect a single-phase to ground fault without a power failure, and thus does no customer suffer during the fault. This should be supplemented with some sort of residual current compensation of the earth fault in order to remove the active fault current, thus minimizing the probability of a double earth fault or short circuit. Göteborg Energi should contact the suppliers of these devices and find out what they consider appropriate, and implement the technology in a loop as a pilot project to investigate its function.

This bachelor thesis has been carried out in collaboration with Nitator at Oskarström, Elvis Vodenicarevic has acted as the contact person from the company. Håkan Petersson has acted as responsible supervisor from Högskolan i Halmstad. The purpose of the project is to automate the welding process for two articles. The considered method and equipment will result in cost savings and quality assurance. Currently the welding operation is done manually, where the purpose of the project lies within automation of the welding process. The process will be mostly handled by robots the only human interaction, except for service and maintenance, will be operators feeding material to the magazine. During the time spent at Halmstad University, the students have accumulated the information and experience in design and production that have been the basis for the design of the work. The understanding is based on courses that include mechanics, strength, production development, machine elements, solid modeling and structural analysis. The foundation of the working methodology is based on Fredy Olsson's methods of principle and primary construction. With these methods as support, a complete fixture and magazine has been designed as part of an automated welding process. During the development, the strength and fatigue resistance of the components were checked in Catia V5's analysis function Generative structural analysis. This is to ensure a product that is capable of the loads that occur. This report will mainly deal with the work that has been done regarding the development of the fixture solution. From page 20-23 comes a summary of the most vital parts of the design of the magazine.

The Murdoch university pilot plant is widely used throughout the instrumentation and control engineering major. This plant allows students to implement the fundamental theoretical knowledge learnt in earlier years on a real industrial plant. This miniaturized Bayer process plant, which runs cutting edge control hardware and software, is a core asset to Murdoch University and it is essential that the system be maintained to the highest of standards. This project aims to maintain the operation of the plant, while expanding the system by implementing an automation program. The implementation of this project will be contributing to previous works by a number of previous students and will finish this particular proposal. The design requirements of this project include a system that demonstrates the functionality of the plant. This program must include transit of water through the system and adequately provide an example of the functionality of the system. Secondary objectives include maintaining the plant between long periods of dormancy and this will include instrument manipulation so all sections of the plant stay active during this period. This proposal was solved by carefully designing the automation program, simulating different aspects of the system and carrying out intense testing. The automation program was successfully implemented and provided adequate operation to demonstrate the functionality of the pilot plant. This program also met the design requirements to cycle the instruments to reduce maintenance issues over the long periods of dormancy. Other accomplishments that were undertaken throughout the semester include the improvement and documentation of the system code, hardware additions, component replacement and servicing. The research undertaken over the semester has generated many other ideas that would improve the system further. These have been assessed and work has commenced on the execution of these ideas, however future work is needed to finish these goals. These include finishing the code restructuring of the entire plant, according to the generated programming standards, implementation of new hardware and the completion of the instrument servicing.

Recently manufacturing is changing rapidly, different manufacturing strategies are being implemented, the conceptual understanding for manufacturing is changed, and new ways of producing products are showing up. Automation has been the essential term regarding the modern manufacturing processes. The humanmachine sharing is playing a major role in the production systems, and the most elegant thing is to create and design the appropriate level for interaction between them depending on the desired outcome in the production area. Technological innovation is the implementation of new more efficient production method by achieving qualitative improvements of the goods and services in a specific area in this paper’s case is a production system. This paper is regarding the importance of the correct production system being chosen for an organization regarding the right level of automation (LoA) being used, which is a way of controlling the overall effectiveness of the system.  Different approaches and methods are going to be used for demonstrating the choice of  the exact and right level of automation and the possibility of changing it by introducing and implementing the ongoing DYNAMO research on a different conceptual solutions for a foundry application in Factory-in-a-Box. Home Automation Systems (HAS) consist of a number of appliances (e.g. washing machine, dishwasher, oven, refrigerator, boiler) and subsystem (e.g. for heating, for air conditioning, for entertaining), which are connected by a communication network. The various elements of the system share common resources (mainly electricity, but also water and gas) to accomplish their specific tasks, according to the user’s requirements. Since resources are limited, in the sense that their consumption cannot exceed fixed thresholds (related to costs, contract’s rules or provider’s directives), competition between the elements of the system generates internal conflicts. The aim of this thesis is to describe an approach to modeling and study of home automation systems, based on the MAS theory, which allows to introduce a rigorous formalization and to define practical tools for the analysis of performances. The models consist of a switched dynamics governed by a Petri net. They are two interconnected components, one of which is basically a switched system with time-driven dynamics and the other is an event-driven dynamical system, which influence each other. The first component (called BEHAVIOR) models the functional behavior of the appliance, while the second component (called PLUG) models its interaction with the supply system of each resource (e.g. electricity, gas, water) and the environment. To optimize the functioning of the modern house we need a comprehensive study of the entire structure seen as a distributed control system. It requires a study of real load profile that is the pattern of electricity usage of a device in the home and an analysis on the skills and properties that every device owns. The entire environment is composed by cognitive and responsive agents, able to communicate its request and to respond to user requests. This communication layer is composed by a data dashboard and a web service able to share and control user behavior in order to satisfy his desire.
Un insieme di elettrodomestici (ad esempio lavatrice, lavastoviglie, forno, frigorifero, caldaia) e sottosistemi (ad esempio per il riscaldamento, per aria condizionata), che sono collegati da una rete di comunicazione, costituiscono un Home Automation Systems (HAS). Ogni sistema appartenente a tale ambiente condivide una risorsa comune (energia elettrica, ma anche acqua e gas) per raggiungere i propri compiti, in base alle esigenze dell'utente. Dal momento che le risorse sono limitate, nel senso che il loro consumo non può superare dei limiti fissati (legati ai costi, le regole del contratto o direttive del fornitore), la concorrenza tra gli elementi del sistema genera conflitti interni. Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di descrivere un approccio alla modellazione e studio di sistemi domotici, basato sulla teoria MAS, che consente di introdurre una formalizzazione rigorosa e definire strumenti pratici per l'analisi delle prestazioni del sistema. Il comportamento di tali modelli è caratterizzato dalle reti di Petri. Essi si compongono di due dinamiche, una guidata dal tempo e l’altra dagli eventi. Il primo componente (chiamato BEHAVIOR) modella il comportamento funzionale dell'elettrodomestico, mentre il secondo componente (chiamato PLUG) modella l’interazione con la risorsa condivisa. Per ottimizzare il funzionamento della casa occorre un ampio studio dell'intero ambiente e del profilo di carico reale di ciascun elettrodomestico come suo modello di consumo di energia elettrica. Due to the globalization today the competition in the market has in- creased and it requires flexibility and produce according to customer demand. In order to reduce the cost of wages industrial companies are now considering moving the manufacturing to low-cost countries. To keep up with the competition in the market without moving the manu- facturing abroad, Lean Automation was developed. The concept of Lean Automation is to reduce the perceived complexity with automa- tion and make automation available for new users and in new applica- tions. Haldex Brake Products are situated in Sweden and want to maintain the manufacturing of the automatic brake adjusters in the country. It is a product well-known and highly exposed to the competition in the mar- ket. Due to this situation Haldex are collaborating with Mälardalen University to develop a robotic cell based on the concept of Lean Au- tomation. It will be installed on their assembly line in 2012. The goal with this master thesis is to create a development process for automation, which can enable the company to be more competitive in the market and this by using their own knowledge to develop automat- ed solutions for higher efficiency in the production line. In addition to the development process for automation, programming of the Lean Au- tomation robotic cell is to be conducted. The conducted work in the master thesis was the programming of the robotic cell and the development process for automation. The pro- gramming was made Lean by reducing waste of time when working with the programmed code. This by a clear structure in the program- ming which makes it easy to handle. A development process for auto- mation was made and used for developing a robotic cell for the assem- bly line. The robotic cell was then tested at Haldex, an important stage before implementing the cell on the assembly line. Testing the robotic cell will give important information about how the equipment actually runs and failures can be observed and adjusted. Testing of the robotic cell will continue after the end of this master thesis.

In this paper, Natural Language Processing and classification algorithms were used to create a program that automatically can tag different errands that are connected to Fortnox (an IT company based in Växjö) support service. Controlled experiments were conducted to find the best classification algorithm together with different Bag-of-Word pre-processing algorithms to find what was best suited for this problem. All data were provided by Fortnox and were manually labeled with tags connected to it as training and test data. The result of the final algorithm was 69.15% correctly/accurately predicted errands using all original data. When looking at the data that were incorrectly predicted a pattern was noticed where many errands have identical text attached to them. By removing the majority of these errands, the result was increased to 94.08%.

The design work that precedes the automation of a process is not an easy job. Each one of the variables and possible risks involved in process must be carefully considered before implement the final design as well the requirements in performance and cost. However automate a dangerous, inefficient or just uncomfortable task entails many benefits that make up for the long period of design process. A well automated line will benefit the production with quality, productivity and capacity among other profits. In this project the immediate objective is to automate the “SANDFLEX Hacksaw blades” packaging process in the plant that SNAEurope owns in Lidköping. Actually the packing is completely manual. One operator packs the blades into the boxes meanwhile one more operator loads and unloads the packing station with empty and full boxes respectively. The task is both, tiring and uncomfortable for the operators as well inefficient for the company since the production rate is limited.

Analyzing and observing carefully product and process, different theories and strategies to achieve the goal were developed. Three are the possible solutions to solve the problem, with different levels of automation and technologies. The robotic solution uses an articulated robot to perform all the tasks; the hybrid solution uses pneumatic devices to pack the blades and an articulated robot to support the station loading and unloading the boxes. Finally the pneumatic solution uses only pneumatic devices, which hold, open and close, push box and blades using airpower; a few sensors detect positions and states, since a PLC coordinates and controls all process. By means of discussing these solutions with the company’s engineers and workers, after a deep literature study and two test of performance, was it possible to select the most suitable solution to accomplish the packaging task. The pneumatic solution is cheap and simple, but at the same time robust and reliable. This design performs the packaging task efficiently and fast. And more important, the operator passes from pack manually the blades to monitor the process.

Home automation systems of today tend to be external solutions to an existing product that enable rather complex and expensive communications equipment to be attached to existing products. This is because it would not be economically defendable to implement the communications hardware internally in the products, due to a high increase of the cost for the product. This thesis tries to solve this problem by introducing a low-cost product-embedded solution for home automation. By using the Elvin protocol together with low-cost communication solutions, such as the RS232 protocol and Open/Closed circuits, communications could be embedded into products and device interaction could be implemented without increasing the cost of already existing products too much. Furthermore this thesis will discuss an implementation of an Elvin router that will act as a bridge between RS232, Open/Closed circuits and the Ethernet network that contains an Elvin server.

Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions (QWBS) provides communication equipment and services used to track trucking fleets and other capital assets via satellite. Order fulfillment and inventory management practices in QWBS were non-uniform and manually intensive. Buyers used their own intuition and rules-of-thumb to decide how many parts to order and how many parts should be held in stock to buffer against unexpected demand fluctuations. Non-uniform, manual inventory management practices resulted in higher inventory levels, lower customer service, and higher operational costs than can be achieved with uniform, formal management practices. This thesis describes the design and implementation of an automated inventory management system that optimizes inventory levels and alleviates manual effort. Benchmarking was used to show how a similar firm used inventory management techniques to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Quantitative analysis was used to develop an inventory management simulator that allowed alternative management strategies to be tested before implementing changes to the real system. Simulation results showed that QWBS inventories for fiscal year 2001 (FY01) could have been reduced by 40% had an automated inventory management policy been in place. In addition, automation would have reduced the manual effort of buyers by about 32%. Results from the simulator motivated the formation of the Automated Inventory Manager (AIM) project team. AIM is designed to automate order fulfillment and inventory management tasks and allow procurement's human resources to be redirected from low level transaction processing tasks to more value-added tasks. AIM is expected to liberate $700K in working capital and save approximately $240K per year in ongoing inventory and labor cost reductions, representing a 1-year ROI of 200%. However, AIM represents only the first step in a recommended cost reduction program to streamline the fulfillment of customer orders and reduce organizational redundancies.

This dissertation is a final documentation of the project whose goal is demonstrating manufacturability of soft lithography. Specifically, our target is creating micron scale patterns of resists on a 3 square inch, relatively large area in case of soft lithography, flexible substrate using microcontact printing in order to forming electronic circuit patterns for flexible displays. At first, the general principles and characteristics of soft lithography are reviewed in order to provide the snapshot of soft lithography technologies, and the key factors that affect the productivity and quality of microcontact printing are discussed because such factors should be understood in advanced to develop current lab-based microcontact printing science into plant manufacturing technology. We proposed a prototype for automated of microcontact printing process adopting a continuous reel-to-reel design, ideal for mass production, as well as printing-side-up design in order to minimize the distortion of relief features of PDMS stamp. The machine we created not only demonstrated the manufacturability of microcontact printing, our initial project goal, but also high scalability for mass production. The machine can print micron scale patterns on a 7 square inch plastic sheet, four times bigger than initial target area, at once.

This dissertation addresses the way technological progress affects the structure of labor market. A theoretical framework based on the routine-biased technical change hypothesis was constructed. The empirical analysis evaluates how the routine task content of occupations is impacted by the adoption of technology at work using a linear model with a fixed-effects estimator. Additionally, the effects of technological adoption at work on the polarization of income were estimated using an Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition.

Els avenços recents en les capacitats tecnològiques susciten la preocupació que una fracció considerable de les ocupacions actuals corren un alt risc de ser automatitzades en un futur pròxim. Hi ha molts estudis a la literatura que sostenen que aquesta és una possibilitat concreta. El que aquests articles fan a la pràctica és, en primer lloc, comprendre el que la tecnologia és capaç de fer avui i el que podrà fer en un futur pròxim, segons els experts en tecnologia. Després, relacionen aquesta informació amb les tasques que realitzen avui els treballadors en les seves ocupacions. Si bé hi ha un efecte directe que tendeix a disminuir la demanda d'aquests treballadors, hi ha altres efectes d'equilibri general associats amb l'adopció de tecnologia d'automatització que tendeixen a augmentar la demanda de mà d'obra. De fet, tot i que s'ha produït una automatització massiva en el passat, la mà d'obra no es va tornar ""redundant"". Tot i el conegut benefici de el progrés tecnològic sobre el creixement econòmic i el nivell de vida, també s'ha identificat com una de les principals raons de la disminució de les perspectives d'ingressos i ocupació per a grups específics de població. Comprendre l'automatització significa dissenyar millors polítiques que puguin maximitzar els beneficis dels avenços tecnològics incentivant la innovació i reassignant recursos a les llars més fràgils. Los avances recientes en las capacidades tecnológicas suscitan la preocupación de que una fracción considerable de las ocupaciones actuales corren un alto riesgo de ser automatizadas en un futuro próximo. Hay muchos estudios en la literatura que sostienen que esta es una posibilidad concreta. Lo que estos artículos hacen en la práctica es, en primer lugar, comprender lo que la tecnología es capaz de hacer hoy y lo que podrá hacer en un futuro próximo, según los expertos en tecnología. Luego, relacionan esta información con las tareas que realizan hoy los trabajadores en sus ocupaciones. Si bien existe un efecto directo que tiende a disminuir la demanda de dichos trabajadores, existen otros efectos de equilibrio general asociados con la adopción de tecnología de automatización que tienden a aumentar la demanda de mano de obra. De hecho, a pesar de que se ha producido una automatización masiva en el pasado, la mano de obra no se volvió "redundante". A pesar del conocido beneficio del progreso tecnológico sobre el crecimiento económico y el nivel de vida, también se ha identificado como una de las principales razones de la disminución de las perspectivas de ingresos y empleo para grupos específicos de población. Recent advances in technological capabilities raise concern that a sizable fraction of today's occupations is at high risk of being automated in the near future. There are many studies in the literature arguing that this is a concrete possibility. What these papers do in practice is first to understand what technology is able to do today and what will be able to do in the near future according to technology experts. Then, they match this information with the tasks that are performed today by workers in their occupations. While there is a direct effect that tends to decrease the demand for such workers, there are other general equilibrium effects associated with the adoption of automation technology that tend to increase the demand for labor. Indeed, despite massive automation has happened in the past, labor did not become "redundant". Despite the known benefit of technological progress on economic growth and living standard, it has also been identified as one of the major reasons for the decrease in the earning and employment prospects for specific groups of populations. To understand automation means to design better policies that can maximize the benefits of technological advances by incentivizing innovation and reallocating resources to the most fragile households. Moreover, the Coronavirus pandemic could further increase the incentive to adopt labor-substituting technologies, as machines do not get infected and sick. To understand the conditions that foster the adoption of automation technology and the overall effect of automation on earnings and employment is the focus of this doctoral thesis.

O objetivo geral desta dissertação é estudar as possibilidades de flexibilização da função de saída do Sistema Hyper-Automaton além das rígidas possibilidades utilizadas atualmente com a utilização direta do HTML, objetivando eliminar as limitações como execução de aplicações proprietárias, caracteres incompatíveis entre browsers, excesso de tráfego na rede, padronizar aplicações, incrementar recursos didáticos, melhorar o suporte a aplicações multimídia atuais e futuras, facilitar a manutenção, implementação e reuso, alterar o layout de saída no browser de maneira dinâmica, explorar outros recursos de links, estabelecer padrões de organização do material instrucional criado pelo professor e muitas outras. Tal sistema anteriormente desenvolvido e funcionando adequadamente, é baseado no formalismo de Autômatos Finitos com Saída como modelo estrutural para organização de hiperdocumentos instrucionais, em especial em cursos na Web, tornando o material hipermídia independente do controle da aplicação. O Sistema Hyper-Automaton, tornou-se portanto, um sistema semi-automatizado para suporte a cursos na Web. Com o desdobramento da pesquisa, esta procurou ir mais além e descreveu possibilidades de não só estudar os aspectos possíveis de formatação de saída do sistema, mas reestruturá-lo totalmente sobre uma linguagem de markup padrão, buscando atualizá-lo tecnologicamente definindo outras possibilidades para que significativos trabalhos futuros possam de maneira mais clara serem alcançados. Dessa maneira, esta dissertação centra-se no estudo da aplicação de formas de flexibilização do Sistema Hyper-Automaton, tanto na parte da estruturação de documentos que são conteúdos instrucionais armazenados, bem como, na forma desse material tornar-se-á disponível através de navegadores WWW compatíveis com as tecnologias propostas, possibilitando o incremento substancial de funcionalidades necessárias para cursos onde a Web é o principal meio. Det finns för närvarande en stark, nationell och internationell, efterfrågan på effektivare bruk av resurser och färskvaror, bland annat från svensk dagligvaruhandel, den svenska regeringen och FN. Naturvårdsverket visar samtidigt att i Sverige så slängs cirka 1.3 miljoner ton mat årligen och att 40% av detta slängs i konsument och butiksled. Detta till trots att dagligvaruhandeln har automatiserade inköpssystem, så kallade Automatiska Ordersystem (AOS). Med utgångspunkt ur dessa system har författarna undersökt, med hjälp av evidensbaserad managementmetodik, intervjuer och observation, Axfoods AOS, Autoorder (AO) utifrån ett inventory managementperspektiv hur systemets nuläge ser ut samt utvecklat en prototyp-modell. Dynamiken av systemet låg fokus, utifrån teoretisk applicering från nutida forskning inom Inventory management. Studien resulterade i teoretisk prototyp som ämnar att bidra till underlag för vidare forskning av AOS.
There’s currently a strong demand, national and international, for a more effective use of resources and perishable goods, among those behind this demand is the Swedish government, the UN and the daily grocery business interest group, Svenskt Näringsliv. At the same time the environmental protection agency in Sweden reports that 1.3 million tons of food are thrown away yearly and that 40% of this originates from the end consumer and the daily grocery business. This problem occurs even though the daily grocery business operates with automated ordering systems (AOS). With this as a starting point the authors have, using evidence-based management methods, interviews and observations, studied the current stat of the Swedish grocery chain Axfood’s AOS, called Autoorder (AO) from an inventory management-based perspective. This resulted in a simple prototype model, where the dynamic modelling of inventory management took center, to act as a foundation for future research within AOS.

Das Ziel dieser Dissertation ist die systematische Entwicklung eines weiterführenden Konzeptes zur Fahrer-Fahrzeug Kooperation, dessen Tauglichkeit anhand empirischer Daten evaluiert und im Hinblick auf sein belegbares Potential in Bezug auf bestehende Ansätze bewertet werden soll.Da Annahmen und Prämissen der Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion den Ausgangspunkt bilden, beginnt die dezidierte Auseinandersetzung und begriffliche Differenzierung von Kooperation in eben diesem Kontext und führt folgerichtig zu einer definitorischen Abgrenzung gegenüber existierenden Ansätzen, der Forderung eines spezifischen Rollenverständnisses zur Interaktion sowie der Ableitung konzeptueller Grundbedingungen. Anschließend werden die strukturellen und prozeduralen Merkmale dieser spezifischen Interaktion herausgearbeitet und dazu benutzt, die generellen Attribute von Kooperation zwischen Fahrer und Fahrzeug zu identifizieren. Dafür wurden nachfolgend solche Indikatoren abgeleitet, vermittels derer der unterstellte Gewinn infolge der Kooperation von Fahrer und Fahrzeug kontrolliert und bewertet werden kann.Im Rahmen mehrerer Voruntersuchungen wurden Fahrsituationen identifiziert, die am meisten von einer kooperativen Interaktion zwischen Fahrer und Fahrzeug profitieren würden. Im Ergebnis wurden für die zwei Hauptuntersuchungen das „Überholen auf der Autobahn“ und das „Linksabbiegen auf innerstädtischen Straßen und Landstraßen mit Gegenverkehr“ als Fahrszenarien ausgewählt, die in jeweils einem eigenständigen Experiment mit alternativen Systemvarianten verglichen worden sind. Die Prüfung spezifischer Hypothesen wurde dabei in die prototypische Umgebung eines Fahrsimulators eingebettet. Abschließend werden in dieser Arbeit die Möglichkeiten zur Etablierung und Einbettung dieses Interaktionskonzeptes in den übergreifenden sozio-technischen Kontext aufgezeigt und zukünftige Perspektiven diskutiert.
The aim of this dissertation is to systematically develop a continuative concept of driver-automobile cooperation, to evaluate its suitability on the basis of empirical data, and to value its provable potential in relation to existing approaches.Assumptions and premises regarding the human-machine interaction constitute the starting point of this work. The decisive altercation and notional differentiation of cooperation are explained in just this context, leading logically to a definitional demarcation of existing approaches, the demand of a specific role understanding of the interaction as well as the derivation of conceptual basic conditions. The structural and procedural characteristics of this specific interaction are then elaborated upon and used to identify the general attributes of cooperation between driver and automobile. In the following, such indicators are derived by which the implied profit as a result of cooperation between driver and automobile can be controlled and valued. Within the framework of several preliminary investigations, those driving situations were identified that would profit most from a cooperative interaction between driver and automobile. As a result, the two driving scenarios "Overtaking on Highways" and "Turning Left on Urban and Country Roads with Oncoming Traffic" were utilized in the experiments. Both single scenarios have been compared in independent experiments with regard to alternative system variants. The prove of specific hypotheses was embedded in the prototypical surroundings of a driving simulator. Finally, the possibility of establishing and embedding this interaction concept into the overall socio-technical context will be presented, and future perspectives will be discussed.

Telecommunication systems, network servers, mainframes, and high-performance computers contain several printed circuit boards (PCBs) that are mounted in card-cage assemblies. Level-3 connectors, often called board-to-board connectors, transmit signals between the primary backplane PCB and the daughter card PCBs. These connectors are customized for each PCB by configuring modules along the length of the connector. Hence, the connector's assembly system must flexibly accommodate the connector configurations. Prior to this research, the assembly of daughter card connectors was a manual process. This thesis presents the conceptual design of an assembly cell, and thoroughly presents the selected concept, a flexible assembly system. In the flexible assembly system, the connector is fixtured on a pallet and transferred to assembly stations on a conveyor. The pallet must be precisely located at each station, to minimize the relative errors between the new component and the connector on the pallet. Kinematic couplings deterministically locate one rigid body with respect to another. Therefore, a pallet system was developed that uses split-groove kinematic couplings between the pallets and machines. Experiments demonstrated that the split-groove kinematic pallet was approximately O1X more repeatable than conventional pallet location methods. The design is evident in the fabrication and operation of the first automated machines for the connector assembly system. In automated machinery, kinematically coupled bodies are often subjected to ranges of disturbance forces. This thesis presents new methods for analyzing the static equilibrium, errors due to contact deformation, and contact stresses that result from disturbance forces. In addition, the manufacturing errors within individual pallets and machines combine to cause system-wide, variability in pallet location. Two methods are presented for estimating the system-wide variability in the position and orientation of the pallets.

Les récentes avancées en matière d'intelligence artificielle ont vu une adoption limitée dans la communauté des auteurs de revues systématiques, et une grande partie du processus d'élaboration des revues systématiques est toujours manuelle, longue et coûteuse. Les auteurs de revues systématiques rencontrent des défis tout au long du processus d'élaboration d'une revue. Il est long et difficile de chercher, d'extraire, de collecter des données, de rédiger des manuscrits et d'effectuer des analyses statistiques. L'automatisation de la sélection d'articles a été proposé comme un moyen de réduire la charge de travail, mais son adoption a été limitée en raison de différents facteurs,notamment l'investissement important de prise en main, le manque d'accompagnement et les décalages par rapport au flux de travail. Il est nécessaire de mieux harmoniser les méthodes actuelles avec les besoins de la communauté des revues systématiques.Les études sur l'exactitude des tests diagnostiques sont rarement indexées de façon à pouvoir être facilement retrouvées dans les bases de données bibliographiques. La variabilité terminologique et l'indexation lacunaire ou incohérente des ces études sont autant de facteurs augmentant le niveau de difficulté de réalisation des revues systématiques qui s'y intéressent. Les requêtes de recherche méthodologique visant à repérer les études diagnostiques ont donc tendance à être peu précises, et leur utilisation dans les études méthodiques est déconseillée. Par conséquent, il est particulièrement nécessaire d'avoir recours à d'autres méthodes pour réduire la charge de travail dans les études méthodiques sur l'exactitude des tests diagnostiques.Dans la présente thèse, nous avons examiné l'hypothèse selon laquelle les méthodes d'automatisation peuvent offrir un moyen efficace de rendre le processus d'élaboration des revues systématique plus rapide et moins coûteux, à condition de pouvoir cerner et surmonter les obstacles à leur adoption. Recent advances in artificial intelligence have seen limited adoption in systematic reviews,and much of the systematic review process remains manual, time-consuming, and expensive. Authors conducting systematic reviews face issues throughout the systematic review process. It is difficult and time-consuming to search and retrieve,collect data, write manuscripts, and perform statistical analyses. Screening automation has been suggested as a way to reduce the workload, but uptake has been limited due to a number of issues,including licensing, steep learning curves, lack of support, and mismatches to workflow. There is a need to better a lign current methods to the need of the systematic review community.Diagnostic test accuracy studies are seldom indexed in an easily retrievable way, and suffer from variable terminology and missing or inconsistently applied database labels. Methodological search queries to identify diagnostic studies therefore tend to have low accuracy, and are discouraged for use in systematic reviews. Consequently, there is a particular need for alternative methods to reduce the workload in systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy.In this thesis we have explored the hypothesis that automation methods can offer an efficient way tomake the systematic review process quicker and less expensive, provided we can identify and overcomebarriers to their adoption. Automated methods have the opportunity to make the process cheaper as well as more transparent, accountable, and reproducible

Automating tasks and processes are becoming more and more common in both corporate and everyday life. The aim of this project is to assist the company Hotswap in the development of a safety system for an existing automatic flagpole. The safety system should be able to monitor wind velocity and, optionally, wind direction as well as communicate the data to the flagpole’s main control unit. The thesis describes and discusses the different possible mechanisms, solutions for measuring wind, and a possible implementation. A method for measuring wind velocity by utilizing an FS5 thermal mass flow sensor was selected and a prototype was developed for testing the performance of the implementation. The tests showed that the thermal mass flow sensor fulfilled the requirements regarding wind velocity measurement and accuracy with an average deviation of 0.19 m/s from the reference value. The solution was then discussed and compared with Hotswap’s existing prototype. The comparison showed that the prototype was a viable alternative. Finally, some suggestions for further development were presented along with the conclusion that the prototype provides a proof of concept for a fully realizable solution.
Automatisering av arbetsuppgifter och processer blir mer och mer vanligt både på företag och i vardagslivet. Detta projekt hade som mål att bistå företaget Hotswap med utvecklingen av ett säkerhetssystem för en befintlig automatisk flaggstång. Säkerhetssystemet ska kunna mäta vindstyrka och vindriktning och kommunicera den uppmätta datan till flaggstångens kontrollenhet. Rapporten beskriver och diskuterar de olika möjliga mekanismer och lösningar som finns för att mäta vindhastighet samt en möjlig implementering. En metod för mätning av vindhastighet där en hot-wire flödessensor valdes och en prototyp utvecklades sedan för att testa den implementerade metodens prestanda. Testen visade att användning av flödessensorn tillfredsställde de ställda kraven på prototypen gällande vindhastighetsmätning och mätprecision med en medelavvikelse på 0.19 m/s från referensvärdet. Lösningen diskuterades och jämfördes sedan med Hotswaps befintliga prototyp. Jämförelsen visade att prototypen var ett rimligt alternativ. Slutligen presenterades några förslag på vidareutveckling tillsammans med slutsatsen att prototypen är en konceptvalidering för en fullt realiserbar lösning.

We examine how speed of automation is affected by different employment protection regimes - one with lenient and one with stringent regulation. To assess we examine how occupations shares in the UK, US, Germany and Spain has changed from 1991-2013. According to our estimates, we find that the speed, of which high-risk occupations shrink over time, slows down in countries with a stringent EPL, Germany and Spain, regime relative to lenient EPL levels, the UK and US.

Process Automation has the potential to yield great benefits for companies and organizations, especially in the financial services industry where companies are information-intensive and experience rich data flows. This has mostly been done through Robotic Process Automation (RPA), but the increased maturity of Machine Learning algorithms has increased the viability of combining classic RPA with Artificial Intelligence, leading to Intelligent Process Automation (IPA). However, there is a set of challenges embedded in the transition from RPA to IPA. These challenges need to be dealt with in order to ensure that the benefits of the new technology can be harvested. The aim of this research was to identify this set of challenges that the companies will face, as well as provide guidance to what preparations that need to be made before IPA can be implemented in full scale. The research was conducted as a theory building case study at a large Swedish bank. An empirical study was conducted, consisting of interviews with researchers, as well as automation professionals and R&D at the case company. The findings of the empirical study and previous research on the area were combined and condensed into a guiding framework for organizations wanting to adopt IPA.

I övergången från RPA till IPA uppkommer däremot en del utmaningar och problem som företag måste hanteras innan potentialen med dessa nya tekniker kan förverkligas. Den här forskningen ämnar att identifiera de utmaningar som företagen kommer ställas inför samt ge vägledning för vilka förberedelser som företagen måste genomföra innan IPA kan implementeras fullskaligt i organisationen. Forskningen genomfördes som en teoribyggande fallstudie på en stor svensk bank. Den teoretiska grunden samlades in genom en omfattande litteraturstudie och en empirisk studie bestående av intervjuer med forskare samt automationsutvecklare och FoU på banken. Resultaten från litteraturstudien och empirin kombinerades och kondenserades till ett vägvisande ramverk för organisationer som vill implementera IPA.

Distribution Automation (DA) is deployed to reduce outages and to rapidly reconnect customers following network faults. Recent developments in DA equipment have enabled the logging of load and fault event data, referred to as pick-up activity. This pick-up activity provides a picture of the underlying circuit activity occurring between successive DA operations over a period of time and has the potential to be accessed remotely for off-line or on-line analysis. The application of data analytics and automated analysis of this data supports reactive fault management and post fault investigation into anomalous network behavior. It also supports predictive capabilities that identify when potential network faults are evolving and offers the opportunity to take action in advance in order to mitigate any outages. This thesis details the design of a novel decision support system to achieve automatic fault diagnosis and prognosis for DA schemes. It combines detailed data from a specific DA device with SCADA data, by utilising rule-based, data science techniques (e.g. data mining and clustering techniques) to deliver the diagnostic and prognostic functions. These are applied to 11kV distribution network data captured from Pole Mounted Auto-Reclosers (PMARs) as provided by a leading UK network operator. This novel automated analysis system diagnoses the condition of device faults, the nature of a circuit's previous fault activity, identifies underlying anomalous circuit activity, and highlights indications of problematic events gradually evolving into a full scale circuit fault using prognostic functionality. The novel contributions also include the characterisation and identification of semi-permanent faults and a re-usable methodology and approach for applying data analytics to any DA device data sets in order to provide diagnostic decisions and mitigate potential fault scenarios.
