Streszczenie:
High-throughput protein crystallography using a synchrotron light source is an important method used in drug discovery. Beamline components for automated experiments including automatic sample changers have been utilized to accelerate the measurement of a number of macromolecular crystals. However, unlike cryo-loop centering, crystal centering involving automated crystal detection is a difficult process to automate fully. Here, DeepCentering, a new automated crystal centering system, is presented. DeepCentering works using a convolutional neural network, which is a deep learning operation. This system achieves fully automated accurate crystal centering without using X-ray irradiation of crystals, and can be used for fully automated data collection in high-throughput macromolecular crystallography.

Results achieved. Based on the analysis of the procedures for the interaction of the processor core and programmable logic on the selected SoC platform, a model of a cyber-physical logic control system was designed. The practical implementation was carried out on the basis of the Vivado/Vitis/Vitis HLS CAD toolkit. The method of hardware self-testing of control automata on the technological platform of SoC ZYNQ-7000 was implemented. Conclusions. The article analyzes the principles of designing embedded cyber-physical systems implemented in system-on-chip. The principles of building verification systems and embedded self-diagnostics of system-on-chip systems containing software and hardware are considered. The developed methods are tested on a model of a traffic light logic control device on the SoC FPGA platform of the ZYNQ-7000 family by Xilinx. The Moore's control automaton is implemented in the PL block in the C programming language, and the operational automaton is implemented in the PS block. During the organization of the self-diagnosis process, a non-destructive diagnostic experiment was performed by traversing all arcs of the transition graph, starting from the initial vertex. In this case, the tester was an operational automaton, the reference logic and time values of which were stored in the memory of the PS unit. Visual observation of the diagnostic experiment was carried out using the LED panel of the ZedBoard board.

Streszczenie:
The conversion of web services to semantic web comes the opportunity to automate various tasks. OWL-S plays a key role in describing web services behaviour. While ontology-based semantics given to OWL-S is structural rather than behaviourally oriented, we cannot automate an essential task in this field, verification. In this article, the mapping of OWL-S process model to Timed automata is investigated, which is a suitable formalism for real time systems modeling and automatic verification. Hence, this has led to not only enabling automatic verification but also covering problems related to automated verification of temporal quantitative properties as bounded liveness property. As a starting point, the OWL-S and sub entry of time ontologies for describing the timed behaviour of services has been chosen. A defined set of mapping rules is used to automatically encode control constructs defined in OWL-S and temporal information into timed automata. Also, it is shown how a Uppaal checker is used to check required properties formulated in TCTL. Finally, an EClinic case study is used to illustrate the technique.

The whiteboard is a tool being used in several different facilities around the world. However, erasing the ink off the board can be unnecessarily time consuming and distracting. The purpose of the project was therefore to create a demonstrator to automate the process with a few restrictions. The demonstrator was required to be light enough and small enough to be handheld. In addition, the demonstrator needed to function and work properly on a magnetic surface. To conceptualize the purpose a demonstrator was built with an iterative process and thereafter programmed to get a systematic movement. It utilized continuous servo motors, IR-sensors and a 3-axis gyroscope and an accelerometer in combination with 3D-printed components. The final prototype turned out to function properly but could be improved as its erasing properties are not working as one could expect from a finished prototype.

Water quality monitoring stations are used to measure water quality at high frequency. For effective data management, the quality of the data must be evaluated. In a previously developed univariate method both outliers and faults were detected in the data measured by these stations by using exponential smoothing models that give one-step ahead forecasts and their confidence intervals. In the present study, the outlier detection step of the univariate method is improved by identifying an auto-regressive moving average model for a moving window of data and forecasting one-step ahead. The turbidity data measured at the inlet of a municipal treatment plant in Denmark is used as case study to compare the performance of the use of the two models. The results show that the forecasts made by the new model are more accurate. Also, inclusion of the new forecasting model in the univariate method shows satisfactory performance for detecting outliers and faults in the case study data.

The deployment of Automated Vehicles (AV) is starting to become widespread throughout transportation, resulting in the recognition and awareness by legislative leaders of the potential impact on transportation operations. To assist transportation operators in making the needed preparations for these vehicles, an in-depth study regarding the impact of AV and Connected Automated Vehicles (CAV) is needed. In this research, the impact of AV and CAV on the highway setting is studied. This study addresses car-following models that are currently used for simulating AV and CAV. Diverse car-following models, such as the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM), the IDM with traffic adaptive driving Strategy (SIDM), the Improved IDM (IIDM), the IIDM with Constant-Acceleration Heuristic (CAH), and the MIcroscopic model for Simulation of Intelligent Cruise control (MIXIC) were examined with the state-of-the-art vehicle trajectory data. The Highway Drone dataset (HighD) were analyzed through the implementation of genetic algorithm to gain more insight about the trajectories of these vehicles. In 2020, there is no commercially available gully automated vehicle available to the public, although many companies are conducting in field testing. This research generated AV trajectories based on the actual vehicle trajectories from the High-D dataset and adjusts those trajectories to account for ideal AV operations. The analysis from the fitted trajectory data shows that the calibrated IIDM with CAH provides a best fit on AV behavior. Next, the AV and CAV were modeled in microscopic perspective to show the impact of these vehicles on a corridor. The traffic simulation software, VISSIM, modified by implementing an external driver model to govern the interactions between Legacy Vehicles (LV), AV, and CAV on a basic and merging highway segment as well as a model of the Interstate 95 corridor south of Richmond, Virginia. From the analysis, this research revealed that the AV and CAV could increase highway capacity significantly. Even with a small portion of AV or CAV, the roadway capacity increased. On I-95, CAV performed better than AV because of Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) and platooning due to CAV's ability to coordinate movement through communication; however, in weaving segments, CAV underperformed AV. This result indicates that the CAV algorithms would need to be flexible in order to maintain flow in areas with weaving sections. Lastly, diverse operational conditions, such as different heavy vehicle market penetration and different aggressiveness were examined to support traffic operators transition to the introduction of AV and CAV. Based on the analysis, the study concludes that the different aggressiveness could mitigate congestion in all cases if the proper aggressiveness level is selected considering the current traffic condition. Overall, the dissertation provides guidance to researchers, traffic operators, and lawmakers to model, simulate, and evaluate AV and CAV on highways.

Throughout history colors have been an important way forliving organisms to signal something to their surroundings. For instance, the color of a plant’s leaves or petals havebeen the way with which the plant communicates with itssurroundings for example to attract insects to spread itsDNA, or to signal that it is poisonous. Animals have alsobeen using colors to impress the other gender or to frightenother animals in order to stay alive and spread their DNA.One could argue that colors in some cases are vital andhave played a major role in evolution. This may not be thecase today for us humans, but the importance and use ofcolor is still very significant in todays society. The purpose of this project is to construct a demonstratorthat can mix a color that it gets as input from auser. Using automation control the machine can first mix acolor and then compensate for any errors just like a humanwould do to get the right result. To be able to do this acolor sensor that reads color in RGB is used. The differentlevels are then translated to a another color model calledHSV, which is then used for mixing the final color. The performance of the system was tested by lettinga sensor scan a sample color card, calculate how much ofeach primary color to pour into the mix. The mixed paintwas then painted onto a piece of paper that was left todry before being scanned. The difference in hue was notedafter the first mix and the system continued adjusting forany deviations until a good result was achieved. The resultof the tests was that it took a maximum amount of threemixes to get within 0,8% of the reference value. In half ofthe tests the demonstrator achieved a good result after thevery first mix.

Testing is a crucial part when developing electronics. One way to lower the costs and increase the efficiency is to avoid human interaction. This can be done with automated testing. The purpose with this thesis is to look into the possibility of automating telephony and facsimile tests with "off the shelf components" such as modems and standard computers. The proposed solution was put together and the needed software was developed, using Java. When testing electronics it is of most importance that the hardware and software carrying out the tests are reliable. To be able to ensure this, the software has been thoroughly tested, and the different error sources discussed. The biggest cause to the problems found was that the modems weren’t reliable. A general work around is presented, implemented and tested.

Streszczenie:
There are several methods to detect asbestos including phase contrast microscopy (PCM), polarized light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy. Although the PCM method is widely used due to its simple process and relatively low cost, it is a time-consuming and laborious process that is manually performed by a human counter. We developed a high-throughput microscopy (HTM) system for automated counting of airborne asbestos fibers to automate the conventional PCM method. Our results show that automatic image acquisition by synchronization of charge-coupled device (CCD) camera with movement of stages, and image analysis using image processing software, significantly reduced time consumption and labor. In this study, we used DksA chrysotile-adhesive protein for the selective detection of asbestos. DksA, known as the protein that specifically attaches to chrysotile, was extracted from Escherichia coli through a recombinant protein technique. We tried to detect chrysotile selectively from other fibers or particles, and we developed a highly selective and automated low-cost device for automated identification and enumeration of airborne asbestos fibers based on the HTM method.

Streszczenie:
“Automate to survive” has become an industrial cliché. Like all clichés, it contains a kernel of truth. But, again, like all clichés, it needs to be periodically reexamined to see if it really fits the situation to which it’s being applied. Automation is not an end in itself. It is a means to an end. Simple as that proposition is, surprisingly it is not one that is always immediately recognized. Just as it was once an up-hill effort to convince management that operations ought to be automated, it can now be a difficult task to persuade them they ought not to automate. The “factory of the future” — the completely automated, labor-free plant — is an appealing concept. However, it can also be misleading. Paper published with permission.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Objectives April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico and January 2017 in Oklahoma brought into sharp focus what can happen if the oil and gas industry gets well control wrong: 16 fatalities, significant environmental damage, loss of assets and reputation. Each year we have multiple blowouts and several fatality events due to a loss of well control. The oil and gas industry can improve from a personnel safety, environmental and reputation perspective. The Automation of Well Control will bring a significant step change in the area of Process Safety forwells. It prevents blowouts, reduces all influx volumes, minimising kicktolerance volumes and reducingcasing and well costs. Method A system has been developedwhich enables Automated Well Control whilst in drilling mode. Pre-determined influx rates, agreed by the operator and drilling contractor, and input by the driller are established. Once the system detects the influx, it performs a series of operations by taking control of the drilling rig equipment. The drill string is spaced out, top drive and mud pumps are stopped, and the BOP is closed. All of this occurs without the driller doing anything; however, he can intervene at any moment. Thissystem is designed as an aid to the driller and does not remove his responsibility. Results The Automated Well Control system has been tested on drilling simulators with real drillers. Comparisons tests have shown that the technology enables shut-in times faster than conventional human interface methods, with influx volumes typically 10-20% of those experienced during manual shut-in. Additionally, a full Field Trial using a traditional rigdemonstrated the effectiveness of the system, proving up the functionality under different operational requirements. The system can now be applied to any type of rig worldwide. Over 50 potential modules have been identified. Planned developments forthe system include circulatingout the kick automatically, shut-in for tripping, circulating, cementing and in-flow testing. It provides assurance for afast, safe and effective shut-in.A full Technology Qualification process has been used for this technology. Innovative Technology Over the past 20 years, technology advancements associated with simulators and cyber-rigs have enabled new technologies to be developed. One of these technologies is Automated Well Control. It is believed that this innovative system will enable a step change in the performance ofprocess safety forwell control, dramaticallyreducing major accident hazards, thereby saving millions of dollars per well, reducing environmental impact and preventing loss of life.

Finger design automation for grippers is one of the areas of highest interest for robot industries. The few studies that have been carried out in the finger design automation research area are limited to objects with specific geometrical properties (e.g. polyhedral). This paper introduces the Generic Automated Finger Design (GAFD) method that contains the essential key processes for automatic design of reliable fingers. The proposed method is implemented on two geometrically complex workpieces and appropriate fingers are designed. The results are discussed in detail and benchmarked against existing approaches.

Streszczenie:
At present, the automatic driving system is accelerating the evolution from L2 assistant driving system to L5 with the advanced automatic driving function in full scenarios. The drivers’ trust in automated driving systems has been proved to be one of the most important factors that affect drivers’ acceptance of automated driving technology. It is also a primary determinant of understanding how to promote productive interaction between drivers and automated driving systems. This paper presents two mixed-method studies that combine demographic and experimental methodologies to assess trust in AVs. 1131 drivers with different driving experiences were investigated on their initial trust in AVs through an online questionnaire. Twenty-six participants evaluated dynamic trust in six sessions of varying road complexity in an L3 automated driving simulator. Data collected included subjective measures of trust, behavior, and physiological measures through ECG and GSR. The results show that drivers’ initial trust related to individuals’ disposition includes age, driving years, gender, driving experience, perceived risks, acceptance of new technology, and the perception of risk. As well as drivers’ initial learned trust depends on the understanding of AVs technology, driving capacity, and the experience of AVs. The dynamic trust changes with the understanding of AVs performance and the external environment. For higher-risk events such as pedestrians and obstacles, the audible reminder can effectively enhance drivers’ situational awareness and trust as a strong reminder to supplement the visual channel in automated driving systems. These findings provide an effective basis for further research and design related to improving the trust in AVs.

Automating processes like drilling, fastening, sealing, painting, and composite material production have reaped a wide range of benefits; from improving quality and productivity to lowering worker ergonomic risks. The results have improved supply chains from small component manufacturers all the way up to airframe assemblers. That said, automation can be very expensive, and difficult to introduce when a product is anywhere beyond the beginning of its life cycle.
