Streszczenie:
Retention and dispersal of shelf waters under the influence of ocean boundary currents is crucial to recruitment processes of many coastal species. In this study, a Lagrangian particle tracking method based on an eddy-resolving, data-assimilating, hydrodynamic model is used to study spatial variations of local retention rates and alongshore dispersal of surface waters on the continental shelf off the west coast of Australia. The circulation on the shelf off the west coast of Australia is dominated by the southward-flowing eastern boundary current, the Leeuwin Current, which is interrupted by episodic wind-driven, northward, inshore surface transport during the austral summer, and by mesoscale eddy formations during the austral winter. Low-retention shelf regions tend to experience high alongshore currents, owing to the near-shore influence of the Leeuwin Current, protruding coastal geography, or formation of mesoscale eddies, whereas high-retention regions are sheltered from the direct influence of the Leeuwin Current by coastal geographic features. Alongshore dispersal also exhibits spatial as well as seasonal heterogeneity, with predominantly southward dispersal during the austral winter, and more symmetrical dispersal during the austral summer. Shelf retention and seasonal dispersal are linked with recruitment processes of invertebrate and fish species off the west coast of Australia.

Reis, Marcelo, i Will F. Figueira. "Age, growth and reproductive biology of two endemic demersal bycatch elasmobranchs: Trygonorrhina fasciata and Dentiraja australis (Chondrichthyes: Rhinopristiformes, Rajiformes) from Eastern Australia". Streszczenie:
Bottom-dwelling elasmobranchs, such as guitarfishes, skates and stingrays are highly susceptible species to bycatch due to the overlap between their distribution and area of fishing operations. Catch data for this group is also often merged in generic categories preventing species-specific assessments. Along the east coast of Australia, the Eastern Fiddler Ray, Trygonorrhina fasciata (Muller & Henle, 1841), and the Sydney Skate, Dentiraja australis (Macleay, 1884), are common components of bycatch yet there is little information about their age, growth and reproductive timing, making impact assessment difficult. In this study the age and growth (from vertebral bands) as well as reproductive parameters of these two species are estimated and reported based on 171 specimens of Eastern Fiddler Rays (100 females and 71 males) and 81 Sydney Skates (47 females and 34 males). Based on von Bertalanffy growth curve fits, Eastern Fiddler Rays grew to larger sizes than Sydney Skate but did so more slowly (ray: L∞ = 109.61, t0 = 0.26 and K = 0.20; skate: L∞ = 51.95, t0 = -0.99 and K = 0.34 [both sexes combined]). Both species had higher liver weight ratios (HSI) during austral summer. Gonadal weight ratios (GSI) were higher in the austral winter for Eastern Fiddler and in the austral spring for Sydney Skates.

Streszczenie:
The hydrocarbons discovered to date on the southern margin of Australia have been assigned to the Austral Petroleum Supersystem based on the age of their source rocks and common tectonic history. Modelling of the source facies distribution within this supersystem using tectonic, climatic and geographic history of the southern margin basins, suggests the presence of a variety of source rocks deposited in saline playa lakes, fluvial, lacustrine, deltaic and anoxic marine environments.Testing of the palaeogeographic model using geochemical characteristics of liquid hydrocarbons confirms the three-fold subdivision (Al, A2 and A3) of the Austral Petroleum Supersystem.Bass Basin oils are assigned to the Austral 3, Eastern View Petroleum System. The presence of oleanane in the biomarker assemblages of these oils, together with their negatively sloping, heavy, isotopic profiles, indicate derivation from Upper Cretaceous-Tertiary fluvio–deltaic source facies. In the eastern Otway Basin, oils of the Austral 2, Eumeralla Petroleum System are sourced by Lower Cretaceous (Aptian–Albian) coaly facies. Oil shows reservoired in the Wigunda Formation at Greenly-1 in the Duntroon Basin are possibly sourced from the Borda Formation and are assigned to the Austral 2, Borda Petroleum System. In the western Otway, Duntroon and Bight basins, a lack of definitive oil-source rock correlations precludes the identification of individual Austral 1 petroleum systems.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Relationships of the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD), El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and the southern annular mode (SAM) with atmospheric blocking are investigated using a linear framework over the austral autumn–spring (cool) seasons for southeast Australia (SEA). Positive blocking events occurring at 130°–140°E increase the likelihood of cutoff low pressure systems developing that generate significant rainfall totals across SEA. In mid to late austral autumn (April–May), blocking is coherent with negative IOD events. During this season, a negative IOD event and blocking are associated with warm sea surface temperature anomalies in the eastern tropical Indian Ocean and a blocking high pressure cell south of Australia. An anomalous cyclonic pressure center over southern Australia directs tropical moisture flux anomalies to the region. Despite this, only a small portion of a negative IOD's impact on SEA rainfall comes through blocking events. During austral winter, ENSO is coherent with blocking; anomalous tropical moisture fluxes from the western Pacific during a La Niña merge with anomalous cyclonic flows centered over SEA, delivering enhanced rainfall via cutoff lows. The low pressure cell constitutes a center of the Southern Oscillation associated with ENSO. This ENSO-blocking coherence is considerably weaker in austral spring, whereby circulation anomalies associated with blocking resemble a SAM-like pattern. As such, a large portion of the SAM's impact on SEA spring rainfall occurs in conjunction with blocking events. The relative importance of associations between the dominant climate modes and blocking in generating the drought-breaking cool season precipitation in 2010 across SEA is discussed.
