Streszczenie:
This dissertation was undertaken partially in response to previous studies on the goddess Asherah. These studies have tended to gather together information from the various cultures in which 'Asherah' appears, and the information is generally presented as a portrait of the goddess. This dissertation approaches the problem from a different perspective. The primary issue addressed is: did the goddess 'Asherah' develop in the same way in all the cultures in which she appears? In order to answer this question, this study considers the evidence as contained in the written records of the first two millennia B.C.E. The mythology preserved in the tablets written by Elimelek in ancient Ugarit is the primary source of information on the goddess Athirat. After considering this mythology, it should be possible to examine Athirat's role in other mythologies, and to attempt to distil her essential characteristics and nature. Within the Ugaritic mythology of Elimelek, she appears most active in the 'Palace of Baal' episode in the Baal Cycle. In this culture Athirat appears primarily in relationship to other gods. She is the consort of E1, the head of the pantheon. In the Elimelek tablets her title is rbt atrt ym. This title indicates an unspecified relationship with the sea. She is the mother of the gods but does not, however, appear as an amorphous 'mother goddess'. Her role as a mother is limited to divine children and royal children. She appears to be the rabitu, the 'queen mother'. Although Athirat is associated with the head of the pantheon, she maintains a connection with mortal women. This may account for her emblem, which is a spindle. In the Ugaritic tablets without a colophon by Elimelek, Athirat also appears. She is mentioned in the myth Shachar and Shalim, in text 114, and in ritual texts. Her small role in these texts adds no substantial characteristics to what may be discerned in the Elimelek tablets. A goddess Asherah may appear in the Old Testament. Certain passages seem to require a godess interpretation for the word asherah. In other texts asherah designates a cultic object. If Asherah does appear as a goddess in the Old Testament, her characteristics are difficult to discern. She does not, however, appear as the consort of Baal or as a fertility goddess.

The coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer, is a major pest of this palm in the world. The use of acaricides is the most common control method for controling A. guerreronis, however periodical applications are required in short time intervals. The predatory mites belonging to the families Phytoseiidae represent an alternative to reducing acaricide use in that culture. Among the predatory mites, Neoseiulus baraki (Athias-Henriot) has been often reported in association with that eriophyid. The objective of this study was to compare the lethality of acaricides between A. guerrernis and N. baraki; to study the effect of these products on the survival, instantaneous rate of increase and behavior of the predator, besides of the potential synergism to fenpyroximate against the predator. The LC50 of azadirachtin, chlorfenapyr and fenpyroximate was higher for N. baraki compared to A. guerreronis. Theses acaricides did not affect the instantaneous rate of increase of the predator. The highest synergism was observed for piperonyl butoxide, indicating that tolerance of N. baraki to fenpyroximate is probably related to cytochrome P450 monooxygenase activities. Chlorfenapyr and azadirachtin caused lower reduction in survival time compared to other products. The distance walked, ambulatory time, walking velocity and number of stops of the predator were not affected when exposed to fenpyroximate, chlorfenapyr and chlorpyrifos. Azadirachtin and chlorpyrifos repelled the predator and all acaricides caused irritability in the predator, except abamectin. Among the acaricides, chlorfenapyr and fenpyroximate are the most suitable for managing A. guerreronis.

The plurality of worlds has had a long history in England, which has not gone unnoticed by scholars. Historians have tended to view this English pluralist tradition as similar to those found on the continent, and in doing so have failed to fully understand the religious significance that the plurality of worlds had on English thought and society. This religious significance is discovered through a thorough investigation of plurality as presented by English natural philosophers and theologians, and in so doing reveals much about England in the seventeenth century. As natural philosophers incorporated plurality within the larger framework of natural theology, it became a weapon of science and reason to be used against the unreasonable atheists of late seventeenth-century England.

The predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acari, Phytoseiidae) is one of the most frequently released natural enemies for biological control of spider mites in greenhouse and outdoors crops. In this research, I utilized Expresses Sequence Tags (ESTs), the most cost effective approach for transcriptome exploration, to study three different aspects of this arachnid species for which there is little genomic information. I combined two EST datasets from different whole body cDNA libraries and analyzed by bioinformatics means. Approximately 54% of 10,256 uniESTs were annotated based on the homology to sequences in the National Center for Biotechnological Information (NCBI) database. A list of these uniESTs, sorted from most to least likelihood based on the expected value from the blast search in public databases, was used to create tools for each of the three studies. First, I described sixty-one genes encoding products known to be important in pesticide metabolism and in endocrinology, including cytochrome P450s, glutathione-S-transferases, acetylcholinesterase homologs, neuropetides and neurohormones. Findings on arachnid specific esterases and neuropetides, and possible benefits to pest management programs, were discussed. Next, I inferred divergence time for Acari and the point of divergence of two lineages within anactinotrichid mites, Ixodes scapularis and Phytoseiulus persimilis. I used expresses sequence tags from the predatory mite P. persimilis to pull out 74 orthologous amino acid sequences of invertebrates species: nine insect species, Daphnia pulex, Ixodes scapularis, and Caenorhabditis elegans. I estimated a similar origin for Chelicerata (578.1 ± 38.2 - 482.2 ± 7.2 Mya) as in other recent studies. However, divergence dating using amino acid sequences suggested a Devonian origin of anactinotrichid mites (487.6 ± 32.2 - 410.1 ± 6.1 Mya) based on four reference dates (two fossil records and two molecular clocks) and four amino acid substitution methods; this estimate is much earlier that those in the current literature. This discrepancy of divergence times may be due to the use of a global clock. Finally, I developed molecular markers from the EST dataset to examine inheritance in the haplodiploid system in P. persimilis. Biparental contribution of chromosomes is required among the predatory mites but the paternal chromosome set seems to be eliminated or loss (Paternal genome loss, PGL) in male offspring. However, genetic studies in other two phytoseiid species were suggested diploid males with PGL only in the germ cells. In the present study, haploid adult males of P. persimilis have been observed using five independent EST-derived markers. Single mites derived from inter-population crosses were genotyped after whole genome amplification. The parahaploid genetic system in P. persimilis is supported by this study, in which both sexes arise from fertilized eggs but the paternal chromosome set is subsequently lost in males.

Amblyseius swirskii and Phytoseiulus longipes are targeted as biological control agents for the horticultural pest Tetranychus urticae. This study applies a standardised protocol to evaluate the risk of establishment of introduced species and investigates temperature related behavioural thresholds for all three species. Laboratory results demonstrate a low level of cold tolerance in A. swirskii and no diapause. Field studies recorded 100% mortality within two weeks of outdoor winter exposure. Amblyseius swirskii has a higher activity threshold temperature than it’s target prey T. urticae. Amblyseius swirskii lacks cold tolerance and is unlikely to establish outdoors and thus can be considered a ‘safe candidate’ for release. Laboratory results demonstrate that P. longipes can not diapause yet is more cold tolerant than A. swirskii. Field studies report 100% mortality after 73 days of winter exposure. Phytoseiulus longipes demonstrates mid-range cold tolerance yet is unlikely to survive an entire winter outdoors. Phytoseiulus longipes has lower activity threshold temperatures than T. urticae. Further studies are required on other factors attributable to establishment potential before it can be classified a ‘safe candidate’. As a consequence of the findings of the present study A. swirskii was granted a license for release into the UK in 2006.

The introduction contains separate studies of the manuscripts, their orthographies, the rhymes, metre and treatment of source material. Both the orthographic studies and the rhyme—grammar reveal Athis to be a CG poem with no real evidence of Rhenish provenance. The metrical studies, dealing with vowel collision and units of one and three syllables, show how the Athis poet pursued various legitimate rhythmic options in his attempt to introduce variation to the tedium of regular alternation. The most positive results emerge from the comparison of Athis with its OF source, the Roman d'Athis. The dependence of the German text on the OF poem can be proved through misunderstandings of lines and part—lines of the Rd'A enshrined in proper names in the German text. By far the most important aspect of the German poet's adaptation is his sense of history. Ancient Rome and Athens are presented in an entirely different way in the German text. In particular, the large scale descriptions of ceremonies and major events are scenically developed under the influence of medieval historiographic ideas. Further supplementary source material is provided by a Pseudo—Ovidian treatment of Pyramus and Thisbe and a number of medieval military and judicial customs associated with Roman models. In general Athis is shown to be indebted to a medieval German self—awareness of Romanitas.

Streszczenie:
The spider mite predator Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and the thrips predator Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) are both commercially mass-reared for use as biological control agents for greenhouse pests. The ability to stockpile these mites in cold storage would greatly facilitate economical mass-production and distribution. In addition, these two species provide an opportunity for comparative studies of cold hardiness because P. persimilis originated in subtropical Mediterranean type climates and is thought to be incapable of entering diapause whereas A. cucumeris is widespread in temperate zones where adult females enter a reproductive diapause for overwintering. Temperature/mortality curves confirmed that both species are freezing intolerant in the traditional sense that supercooling points (SCPs), at which freezing of body fluids occurs, represent absolute lower lethal temperatures. Both species were capable of moderate supercooling, into the range of-20°C to -30°C, and both showed a trend of increasing SCP temperatures during development from egg to adult that suggested an inverse relationship between supercooling capacity and body size within species. The only exception to this trend was adult female A. cucumeris, which may be significant because this is the only life stage that is capable of diapause or survival of temperate winters. On the other hand, diapause induction and low temperature acclimation had little or no effect on supercooling capacity, and survival of nonacclimated mites at subzero temperatures above their SCPs was limited to very short periods of exposure, suggesting that the SCP represents a physical property of the mites rather than an adaptation for survival of exposure to subzero temperatures. Cold-storage survival of both species was optimum at 7.5°C, was greatly enhanced when a source of moisture was provided, and was enhanced even further when food was provided even though the mites were held at temperatures below their theoretical temperature threshold for development. Under these conditions, survival of P. persimilis was 80% after six weeks whereas that of A. cucumeris was only 35% after the same period of time. Furthermore, longevity and fecundity of P. persimilis after eight weeks of cold storage were comparable to mites taken directly from rearing cultures whereas oviposition by A. cucumeris after six weeks of cold storage was low and irregular compared to previously reported values. Temperature data from areas where P. persimilis survives outdoors indicate that this species is capable of surviving prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C and occasional exposure to subzero temperatures, and apparently does so without diapausing. On the other hand, A. cucumeris may be capable of surviving prolonged exposures to subzero temperatures, but only as diapausing adult females. The results of the current studies are consistent with these ideas and further suggest that nondiapausing A. cucumeris are less cold hardy than P. persimilis.

In the historical tapestry of the development of the Goddess, from 10,000 - 330 BCE one golden thread shines through. Despite the vicissitudes of differing status, she remained essentially the same, namely divine. She was continuously sought in the many mysteries, mystic ideologies and through the manifestations that she inspired. In all the countries of the Ancient Near East, the mother goddess was the life giving creatrix and regenerator of the world and the essence of the generating force that seeds new life. While her name may have altered in the various areas, along with that of her consort/lover/child, the myths and rituals which formed a major force in forming the ancient cultures would become manifest in a consciousness and a spiritual awareness.
