The problem in this study was to determine the relationship between the scores on the three parts (reading, writing, and mathematics) of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills Test (TAAS) and the academic success of first-year students at Clarendon College, Clarendon, Texas. High school grade-point average and gender were also included in the study. The purpose of the study was to develop an equation to predict first-year college grade-point average at Clarendon College . The predictor variables were the three parts of the TAAS Test (reading, writing, and mathematics) , high school grade-point average, and gender. The equation was developed through multiple correlation/multiple regression multivariate procedures. All statistical analyses were calculated through sub-programs of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The study was limited to using only 1992/1993 Texas high school graduates who had entered Clarendon College in the fall semesters of 1992 and 1993 directly following high school graduation. A search of Clarendon College records produced 115 students from these groups who fully met all standards defined for the study. Two predictor equations were developed. One developed through a simple regression command included all five predictor variables. The second equation was produced through a stepwise procedure. This equation included only high school grade-point average and the mathematics score from the TAAS Test. The variables TAAS reading, TAAS writing, and gender were not found to be significant when used in conjunction with the other predictor variables. The strength of each predictor variable was evaluated using students from the freshman class of 1994-95 at Clarendon College. Each of these students met the same basic standards used to establish the prediction equations. The two prediction equations were found to be equal in predictive strength. There was less than one percent difference in the variance accounted for between the two equations. Neither equation showed itself to be all powerful in terms of variance accounted for. Each did, however, predict first-year college grade point average to within two standard errors 93 percent of the time. Recommendations were made that further studies be conducted to find the ideal predictor equation for Clarendon College. Specific recommendations included bringing a more diverse mix of predictor variables into the study. A recommendation was also made to include more of the student body (out-of-state, part-time, etc.) in future studies.

Farmers' decisions to adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM) technologies depend on the profitability of IPM systems relative to the traditional production methods. Government policies may affect the profitability of the IPM technologies. A linear programming model was developed and used to evaluate the economic incentives for adoption of Integrated Pest Mangement (IPM) practices by Jamaican farmers in Ebony Park, Clarendon. Further analysis was completed to determine the affect of policy changes on the profitability of the IPM systems. The objective function of the model was to maximize net returns above variable costs for the farm and included: ten cropping systems, resource constraints, relative prices, and government policies facing the farm. Resource constraints included risk constraints limiting the maximum acreage planted for each crop. Potential crops grown by the farm included: IPM and conventional hot pepper, IPM and conventional sweet potato, IPM and conventional callaloo, corn, pumpkin, cassava, and sugar cane. The trade and domestic policies incorporated into the model were: preclearance (farm level inspections of exportable harvest), elimination of the concessionary water rates to farmers, lowering the duty concession rate to farmers, lowering the Common External Tariff, appreciation of the real exchange rate, elimination of the credit subsidy and a fall in the real interest rate.
The results of the model showed four major conclusions. First, the IPM systems for hot pepper, sweet potato and callaloo were more profitable than the conventional systems. Second, within the framework of risk constraints and preclearance, the IPM systems continued to be more profitable than the conventional practices. Third, the elimination of either the water or credit subsidies currently available to the farmers did not greatly affect the profitability of the IPM systems compared with the profitability of conventional production. Fourth, with a lower real interest rate, the elimination of the duty concession, a lowering of the Common External Tariff (CET) or an appreciation of the real exchange rate, the IPM systems were more profitable than the conventional technologies.
Four implications arose from the conclusions. First, extension efforts towards farmers should emphasize the increase in profits from the IPM technologies. Second, policy steps designed to liberalize the domestic economy will not require offsetting policies supporting the adoption of IPM by farmers in Clarendon. Further research is needed on the effects of water availability on IPM adoption and the potential barriers to IPM adoption by female-headed households. Finally, further research is on the economic returns of incorporating preclearance education with IPM.<br>Master of Science

The main argument of this thesis is that the landscape and locality of Clarendon Forest and Park were strongly influenced by the presence (or, later, absence) of Clarendon Palace, which fell into decay in the late fifteenth century. This contention is addressed by taking the landscape as the unit for study, rather than focusing on the palace and extrapolating 'outwards'. A primary aim is to restore the wider conceptual landscape by considering the forest alongside the relict landscape of the park, and it is argued throughout that, because medieval forests are archaeologically elusive, the best way to achieve this is through an intensive documentary methodology. Attention is drawn throughout to the capacity of documents to illustrate how estates were managed over time. This is demonstrated particularly in Chapters Two and Three, the main findings of which (including observations of a major change in attitude and landscape use in the early- to mid- fourteenth century) are drawn together in the conclusions of those chapters. The thesis, representing an unprecedented systematic study of manuscript sources for Clarendon Park and Forest held at central and regional record offices, is supported by references to printed primary sources. It has resulted in the compilation of a main computer database listing over 800 relevant documents held at the Public Record Office alone (Appendix 11), from which those that might prove most useful were selected and transcribed. The transcriptions, arranged by subject, form several substantial and searchable electronic databases facilitating cross-checking and comparison, some of which are reproduced here as Appendices. The written sources themselves have informed the structure of the thesis. Their worth in a study such as this is explored in Chapter One, following a brief background history of Clarendon and an elucidation of the study's academic and historiographical context. Chapter Two then addresses ecology and economy, while the park's 'built environment' is considered in Chapter Three in order to provide new insights. Settlement is explored in Chapter Four, which reveals Clarendon Forest to have been a landscape of control in which assarting, in particular, was restricted. Chapter Five expands on this point by addressing 'closure' and conflict in the landscape. It examines also Clarendon's 'social topology', partly by employing gender as a tool to elucidate the nature of social closure, and ends by considering the palace as a scene of social negotiation. The Conclusion, Chapter Six, expands on the management of the forest and park and the phasing of the latter's use based largely on materials in Chapters Two and Three. It concludes that the hypothesis is supported; this unique landscape and locality was indeed profoundly influenced by the existence of a royal park and palace at its centre. Nevertheless, what has emerged strongly in the course of the study are the myriad ways in which the forest, in turn, shaped the lifecycle' of the palace.

År 2006 stiftades en ny lag om genetisk integritet som på flera sätt berör användningen av fosterdiagnostik.</p><p>Denna studie syftar till att analysera i vilken omfattning samt på vilket sätt svensk nyhetspress beskrivit fosterdiagnostik åren 2005-2007, dvs åren före och efter lagens tillkomst, med fokus på</p><p>frågeställningar som undersöker huruvida fosterdiagnostik beskrevs ur ett risk- eller möjlighetsperspektiv. Studien har utförts med kvantitativ innehållsanalys och innefattar 206 artiklar från morgontidningarna Dagens Nyheter och Göteborgs-Posten, kvällstidningarna Aftonbladet och Expressen samt facktidningen Dagens Medicin.</p><p>Resultatet visar att antalet publicerade artiklar om fosterdiagnostik inte avsevärt förändrades under åren. Fosterdiagnostik gestaltas generellt med lika mycket riskperspektiv som möjlighetsperspektiv. Däremot fanns det tydliga skillnader i betoningen av perspektivet i varje enskild artikel. Olika gestaltningsverktyg visade sig dessutom ha betydelse för om artikeln betonar ett visst perspektiv. Kvällspressen visade sig oftare använda personer med egen erfarenhet som aktörer i sina artiklar, än morgontidningarna och fackpressen. Läkare används i kvällspressen ofta i samband med ett riskperspektiv, medan fackpressen ofta använder läkare i samband med ett möjlighetsperspektiv.</p>

This report is the result of a thesis work in mechanichal engineering performed at Volvo GroupTrucks Operations, Powertrain productions in Köping by the student Christoffer Jansson. Thework of 15 ECTS credits is conducted over a 20 week period at half speed equivalent to 400working hours.The background to the work is the desire to improve a workstation where the transmissions tothe IPS2/3 and IPS15 are assembled. The problem on the workstation is that the workers areperforming non value-added activities (NVAA) and it is of interest that one would examine thepossibility of how to squeeze two bearing rings in the same sequence. The aim is thus todevelop a suggestion of improvement for the bearing pressing method on the assembly line.The issue the thesis work is based on is: How does one manage to press together two bearingrings in the same sequence into a particular component? & How can one improve theergonomic circumstances on the workstation?To be able to perform this work, a case study based on the product development processaccording to Ulrich and Eppinger (2012) has been made. Product development tools are used tofacilitate the work of the student. Including Gantt chart, Pugh's analysis and functional analysis.The result of the work is a modification of the existing working table where the bearing ringsare pressed into the middle gear housing. The solution consists of a steel plate that rests on fivesprings which dampen the weight of the middle gear housing. The middle gear housing is thecomponent in which the bearing rings are pressed in. There are 5 guiding rods that are mountedon the steel plate, one for each spring, which has the function to keep the steel plate stablewhen the middle gear housing is set on top. These guiding rods are in turn controlled bybushings which serve to reduce friction. The bushings are standard components that aremounted into a component called the bushing holder, which is a component that is screwed intothe table.The new working process the solution provides eliminates the previous NVAA that has been onthe station before and allows the worker to press two bearing rings into the middle gearinghouse in the same sequence. The ergonomic circumstances have also been improved due to theelimination of the worker having to rotate the heavy middle gearing house 180 degrees. Thesolution thus meets the demands made in the report and solves the problems identified.

This thesis presents a professional/organisational analysis of popular music journalism in the UK. It considers the conditions under which consumer music magazines are produced (at the level of both the newsroom and the publishing organisation) and how music journalists deal with their main point of informational contact, the press officer. Drawing on original interview and participant observation research, the thesis considers: the economic and bureaucratic forces within magazine publishing organisations; how titles are positioned both individually and collectively as part of portfolio of niched titles; how market forces condition how and why titles are launched, redesigned and folded; and, ultimately, how all these factors impact upon and shape the socio-professional and cultural conditions under which editors and their staff work. The thesis then considers the music press officer (both in-house and independent and their office/departmental hierarchies) in terms of how they exist and operate at the meeting point of three distinct groups: the artists they are employed to represent; the artists' record companies; and the press (and their attempts to reconcile these often divergent needs). Having considered the music press and music journalists in isolation (in terms of power structures as well as their collective and individual goals) and press officers in isolation (in terms of their position within wider music industry promotional strategies and how they build, develop and revise a roster of artists) the thesis then moves on to analyse how these two distinct professional groups (journalists/editors and press officers) work together, how they professionally and organisationally define their goals and objectives and the steps they take to meet these goals and objectives, negotiating quantitatively and qualitatively the coverage of artists. A complex relationship of conditional power and mutual dependency links these two sets of professionals in both their formal activities and their socio-cultural activities. Breaking from previous studies that have described a uni-directional flow of power and influence of press officers over the press, the thesis argues that the relationships that tie these groups together (in terms of gatekeeping within the hierarchy of the newsroom and a tilting balance of power) are much more complex that has previously been assumed.

Based on the premise that governmental influence on the press in the form of press restraints can prevent the recurrence of deadly ethnic violence, it argues for certain types of press restraints in societies that (1) are just emerging from ethnic conflict and (2) lack the societal norms and established institutions that stem from traditions of democracy, is formulated. Taking Singapore as a case study, it shows that race issues were progressively de-politicized from 1956 to 1972 as a consequence of governmental influence. <p>Background: During the last decades, mergers and acquisitions have filled hundreds of book and newspaper pages. Despite the great number of research works in this field, there is no much agreement about the advantages of this strategy. Some writers point out that newspapers devote more space to mergers that fail. Taking into account the widespread influence of newspapers in modern society, they way in which they picture merger outcomes and their explanations for the success or failure of this strategy should not be disregarded. </p><p>Purpose: Our purpose is to describe and analyze how different Swedish newspapers depict the outcomes of mergers. </p><p>Procedure: We chose five relatively recent cross-border mergers that involved a Swedish company. We selected several relevant articles from two general newspapers, a business newspaper and a business magazine. Following an inductive approach, we identified the factors used in those articles to depict post merger outcomes and classified them into "hard" and "soft". </p><p>Results: We found that newspapers usually evaluate the success or failure of merger taking into account the motives lying behind the merger. Synergy is given the greatest importance among both the hard and soft factors used to depict merger outcomes. Culture and the human side of mergers are soft factors not frequently treated. Indeed, it is evident that newspapers recognizetheir importance for a successful merger. Newspapers give a picture of post merger outcomes that covers both "hard" and "soft" factors while the research works selected have more partial views.</p>

Most characters seek redemption, though they are denied the means to deliver themselves as they move towards an end that seems inevitable. This feeling of inevitability represents the arbitrary and seemingly unsystematic nature of circumstance. This PhD explores the experience of female journalists working in the Saudi Arabian press. It looks at the difficulties they face as women journalists, their motives for working in this area and their writings. The research discusses how the culture gender segregation in Saudi Arabia impacts upon Saudi media representations of gender stereotypes and the role of print media (the press) in exposing women’s issues to the public and forming public opinion. I utilised a media studies’ approach adopting an Islamic feminist perspective. I generated data from indepth interviews with seven Saudi female journalists working in Saudi press, who discuss female-related topics as well as content analysis of related press articles. The analysis indicated that the Saudi culture of extreme gender segregation has impacted on the experience of female journalists, particularly on their ability to compete with male journalists. As my analysis argues, my participants report experiencing female segregation and discrimination mainly affecting their pay, job opportunities, promotion, availability and access to information. My findings further suggest that the media in Saudi Arabia is the most direct venue for women to express their views and discuss their issues. In accordance with previous studies in the field, my study reveals that Saudi Arabian women interpret feminism within the boundaries of their specific culture and Islamic standpoint. Lastly, I discuss how current political, social and economic reforms in the region, which influence women’s status in the public arena, are reflected in the Saudi press.

The notion of the 'public intellectual' has been a recurring discussion topic within sociology and the humanities for decades. Yet it has been largely neglected within media and cultural studies. Accordingly, few scholars have discussed in much depth how public intellectuals operate within the media and what functions this media role may facilitate. Intellectuals in the Australian Press is an exploration into this generally overlooked area of scholarship. It aims to provide three levels of insight into the topic. Firstly, the study looks closely at the appearance and the function of public intellectuals in the Australian press. In this thesis the press laws of 1909 and 1931 are analyzed and compared. Before the comparative examination of the press laws, the emergence and development of press in the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century, including the related legal arrangements, is given within an historical framework. This thesis aims to introduce the similarities and differences between the first and only press law of the Ottoman Empire and the first one of the Turkish Republic by examining them in detail. It is argued that the press laws of 1909 and 1931 were prepared to be able to remove the legal deficiencies in press area. However, it is also claimed that the Ottoman and Turkish governments, which prepared the related press laws, was trying to control and suppress the press sine they were anxious about the safety of their regimes. Although both laws included articles that limited the press freedom, this study argues that the press law of 1909 had more liberal aspects in comparison with the Abdulhamid period and, the press law of 1931 gave extensive rights to the government to be able to control the press as a result of restrictions it imposed on the freedom of press which existed at that time.

I den här uppsatsen undersöks hur olika islamistiska rörelser framställs i svensk press och vilken mediebild som skapas kring fenomenet islamism. De teoretiska utgångspunkterna är gestaltningsteorin och postkoloniala teorier om orientalism och eurocentrism. De används för att se vilka föreställningar som ligger bakom mediebilden. Den metod som används är kvalitativ textanalys i syfte att finna strukturer och mönster i texterna. De islamistiska rörelserna i denna undersökning förekommer stundtals i samband med nyhetsrapportering om terrorism. De skildras även någon gång som motpoler. Vissa delar av materialet präglas av orientalism och då främst den orientalistiska bilden om araben som hotfull och annorlunda. Den eurocentriska teorin präglar främst den undersökta rörelsen Det islamistiska rättvise- och utvecklingspartiet (PJD). Skillnaderna i framställningarna utgörs främst av vilken roll som de olika rörelserna får. Två av rörelserna PJD och Tablighi Jamaat framställs både i negativa termer men också i positiva termer. al-Qaida i tvåflodslandet framställdes endast i negativa termer.

Syfte: Vårt första delsyfte med den här studien är att undersöka om press är ett hot mot revisorns oberoende genom att undersöka om det är skillnad på den press revisorer upplever och den press de bedömer att de klarar av. Vårt andra delsyfte är att redogöra för hur och i vilken omfattning ett revisionsutskotts existens kan sänka revisorns upplevda press och därmed stärka revisorns oberoende. Metod: Denna studie är utförd med kvantitativ metod. Data har samlats in med hjälp av dataenkäter som har skickats via e-post till 316 revisorer i Sverige som arbetar med noterade bolag. Revisorerna har skattat sin upplevda press från klienterna med hjälp av Borg CR100 (centiMax) Scale®. Analys av data har utförts med korrelationsanalys, regressionsanalys och t-test med hjälp av statistikprogrammet SPSS. Resultat & slutsats: Vi fann signifikant skillnad mellan den press revisorerna upplever och den press revisorerna bedömer att de skulle klara av innan de godkänner en felaktig finansiell rapport. Studien indikerar en liten skillnad i upplevd press vid revision av företag med revisionsutskott jämfört med revision av företag utan revisionsutskott. Dock var denna skillnad inte signifikant. Förslag till fortsatt forskning: I kapitel 5.5 tar vi upp förslag till fortsatt forskning varvid huvudfrågorna vi diskuterar är följande: hur sammansättningen av revisionsutskotten påverkar revisionsutskottens effektivitet, vad som orsakar de stora skillnaderna i huruvida revisorerna upplever press eller inte från VD och styrelse och hur hälsan påverkas av den press revisorerna bedömer att de upplever. Uppsatsens bidrag: Uppsatsen bidrar med empiriskt underlag för fortsatt forskning då denna studie är den första i sitt slag som har utförts i Sverige. Vidare bidrar studien praktiskt till en ökad kunskap om hur mycket press en revisor upplever i förhållande till vad en revisor bedömer att de klarar av samt hur revisionsutskott påverkar revisorns upplevda press.<br>Aim: Our first subsidiary aim of this study is to investigate whether the pressure is a threat to auditor's independence by investigating whether there is a difference between the pressure experienced by auditors and the pressures they estimate that they can handle. Our second subsidiary aim is to explain how and to what extent an audit committees' existence can lower the auditor's perceived pressure and thereby strengthen the auditor's independence. Method: This study is conducted by a quantitative method. Data were collected using data questionnaires sent by e - mail to 316 auditors in Sweden working with listed companies. The auditor has estimated his or hers perceived pressure from clients using the Borg CR100 (centiMax) Scale®. Data analysis has been performed by correlation analysis, regression analysis, and t-test with the statistical program SPSS. Result & Conclusions: We found a significant difference between the experienced pressure by auditors and the pressure auditors estimated that they could handle before approving a false financial report. The study indicates a small difference in the perceived pressure for audits in co-operation with companies with audit committees, compared with companies without audit committees. However, the difference was not significant. Suggestions for further research: In Chapter 5.5 we bring up suggestions for further research and the main issues we discuss are: how the composition of audit committees influences audit committees' effectiveness, what the large differences in whether the auditors are experiencing pressure or not from the President and Board of the company are caused by and how the health is affected by the estimated pressure auditors experiencing. Contribution of the thesis: The study contributes with the empirical foundation for continued research because this study is the first of its kind in Sweden. Furthermore, the study contributes practically to a greater knowledge of how much pressure an accountant experience in relation to what the auditor believes that they are capable of and how audit committees affect the auditor's perceived pressure.

Press & Plåtindustri AB (PPI) är ett plåtföretag som är underleverantör till fordonsindustrin. Företaget ägs av japanska Press Kyogo co ltd och arbetar sedan några år tillbaka med Lean. Syfte: Syftet med denna uppsats är att, med Toyota Production Systems 14 principer som bakgrund, undersöka hur Press & Plåtindustri AB:s produktionssystem ser ut samt hur företaget hanterar olika efterfrågevariationer. Metod: Den här uppsatsen bygger på en fallstudie av Press & Plåtindustri AB. Vi har med en kvalitativ metodik samlat in data genom att intervjua personer från företaget samt genom observationer av produktionen. Slutsats: De flesta av TPS 14 principer kan identifieras hos PPI, utifrån företagets unika situation och förutsättningar. Företaget hanterar fluktuationerna i kundernas efterfrågan genom att balansera personalstyrkan med hjälp av bemanningsföretag.

The purpose of this paper is to study what the press in Sweden wrote about counterfeiting from 1944 to 1950. By studying how the newspapers wrote about the crime of counterfeiting, the paper aims to give a glimpse of how counterfeiters worked and got their notes in circulation. The analysis is based on a theoretical perspective of a "we" and "they" in which Sweden is compared to the opposite abroad. The paper examines how the security of Swedish banknotes is discussed in Swedish news articles and how they describe counterfeiters and passers. The paper examines forty one newspaper clippings from the period 1944-1950 from twenty five different newspapers from different parts of the country. The study is implemented with previous research of media and counterfeiting. The paper describes nine individual cases of counterfeiting, as well as a longer sequence of events with a criminal gang that is behind the counterfeit notes, where several similar notes are spread in different cities in Sweden. The conclusion is that counterfeiting is a small problem in Sweden during this time and the notes that come out in circulation are relatively poor copies. But the counterfeit notes are not always directly detected and that makes them spread in the country. Counterfeit banknotes are most likely to be detected in public environments such as cafes, shops and bakeries. And also outdoor by different merchants, according to the view of the press. The notes are mostly put in circulation during the evening or night, or when it's rush hour. Swedish banknote quality and safety is often compared to other countries where a "we" and "they" are constructed in the media. The press gives a comprehensive picture of counterfeiters as criminals, mysterious cheaters, fraudsters, artists but also as a dissenting profession.

This thesis describes the underground press of the sixties in the United States, from the beginning of the movement in mid-decade to its apparent demise in the early seventies. I use articles from the underground papers to illustrate the nature of the underground press and apply literary and socio-cultural theories and thinking to the phenomenon in order to chart and analyze its rapid development and speedy disappearance early in the seventies. I focus on the journalistic idealism represented by the papers. By journalistic idealism, I mean the belief that society could be improved if its ills were exposed by journalism conducted in the public interest--the founding faith of the daily press in America. In this sense the underground papers recalled the earlier ideals of a free press in a democratic society. I conclude that the journalistic idealism of the sixties was contained and perverted, but not destroyed. The deeper questions posed here, however, concern the nature of hegemony and of social movements for change and their particular problems with respect to the status quo and its official authorities. The theoretical justification for treating newswriting (generally) as a form of literature (rather than a form of "communications"), is to reveal some of the codes it relies upon to convey meaning (rather than simply information).

Scania has experienced difficulties with large variations of the slope of the back plane after press quenching of case hardened crown wheels of especially type R780 Steg supplied from ingot cast material. This leads to that a large number of crown wheels has to be remeasured and sorted according to back slope which is time consuming for operators. Also, after sorting of the crown wheels, hard machining has to be adjusted according to the different slopes of the back plane of the crown wheels. In some cases, it also leads to scrapping of the crown wheels.This master’s thesis was divided in two parts. The aim of the first part was to confirm that the crown wheel type and casting technique that exhibits the largest variations in slope of the back plane is the R780 Steg originating from ingot cast material. The crown wheel types that were compared were the R780 Steg, R780 Slät and R885 Slät. Crown wheels manufactured from ingot cast material and from continuous cast material were compared. Hence, 6 combinations were examined. The slope of the back plane was measured with the measuring probe FARO after press quenching. The slope of the crown wheels was found to depend on both casting technique and the geometry of the crown wheel. The results confirmed that the crown wheel type and supplier combination that by far yields the largest variations in slope of the back plane is the R780 Steg supplied by Steel Plant A who uses the ingot casting technique. For this combination the variation exceeds 0,1 mm. All other combinations of crown wheels and suppliers yield acceptable variations.The second part of this master’s thesis was composed of determining if segregations in the cast ingot are the cause of the variations in slope of the back plane of the crown wheel type R780 Steg. This was done by measuring if there is a correlation between the slope of the back plane of the crown wheel after press quenching, the chemical composition and the original position of the crown wheel in the ingot. As in the first part of the study, the distortion was measured by the measuring probe FARO. The samples were sent to Degerfors Laboratorium for chemical analysis. Analyses of C, S and N were made by using combustion analyses. For As, P, B and Al optic spectrometry (spark) was used. All other elements were analysed by x-ray fluorescence. Segregations were found to be present and in combination with the geometry of R780 Steg to be the cause of the large variations in slope of the crown wheels.The results of this thesis show that, for the crown wheel type R780 Steg, Scania should not use suppliers that employ the ingot casting technique. Instead, only suppliers using the continuous casting technique should be used. However, for the other crown wheel types ingot or continuously cast material can be used.

For 141 years, The Ryerson Press was both a cultural engine for and a reflection of Canadian society. Founded in 1829 as the Methodist Book Room, it was Canada’s first English-language book publisher and became the largest textbook publisher in Canada. Its contributions to Canadian literature, particularly under long-time editor Lorne Pierce, were considerable. In 1970, however, the press was sold to American branch plant McGraw-Hill, causing a cultural and nationalist crisis in the publishing community. The purpose of this thesis is to explanation many of the factors causing the United Church to sell the House. The purchase of an expensive and outdated printing press in 1962 has been blamed for the sale, as has the general state of Canadian publishing at the time. However, the whole story is much more complex and includes publication choices, personnel shifts, management failures, financial ruin, organizational politics, inflation, and the massive cultural shift of the late 1960s. Specifically, the thesis looks at the succession crisis that followed Lorne Pierce’s retirement, the Woods, Gordon Management Report, the New Curriculum, The United Church Observer, the practice of hiring ministers as managers, the formation of the Division of Communication, the proposed merger of the United Church of Canada with the Anglican Church of Canada, and falling church membership.
