This paper mainly surveys the different groups of college students to investigate the different aspects of impressions mobile operators made on them. The questionnaire survey shows that students of different gender have significant differences in market impression and technology impression (P<.001); Students of different family residences have no different impressions in mobile operators; Students of different grades have significant differences in market impression, employee impression and total score (*P< .05); Students of different majors have significant differences in all impression dimensions except technology impression. And after multiple comparison analysis, the impressions of different professional students differ mainly between the liberal arts students and science and engineering students. Through this investigation, the study aims to improve the capability of mobile operators in making appropriate impression management when they are in the face of college students, the potential high-end users.

Impression of helpers can vary as a function of the magnitude of helping (amount of help) and of situational and motivational aspects (type of help). Over three studies conducted in Sweden and the US, we manipulated both the amount and the type of help in ten diverse vignettes and measured participants’ impressions of the described helpers. Impressions were almost unaffected when increasing the amount of help by 500%, but clearly affected by several type of help-manipulations. Particularly, helpers were less positively evaluated if they had mixed motives for helping, did not experience intense emotions or empathy, or if helping involved no personal sacrifice. In line with the person-centered theory of moral judgment, people seem to form impressions of helpers primarily based on the presumed underlying processes and motives of prosociality rather than its consequences.

The current trend is the introduction of antimicrobial agents for the purpose of inhibiting or avoiding (adherence) adhesion and (increasing) the multiplication of their microorganisms on the surface of the impression materials. This study aims to determine the properties of antibacterial and antifungal elastic impression materials in full agreement with (bacterial flora) microflora specific for every patient ( with identification of existing species ). In the same time there are considered modern methods of sterilization and insertion of antiseptics, trajectories with profound impact in the field of biocompatibility. The obtained microorganisms were transplanted on differentiated and selective (differentiated) culture medium in order to obtain pure cultures.Each microbial strain obtained was tested to identify several characteristics. The examinations carried out by means of the electron microscopy very accurately detect the microbial load in the structure of the impression materials, sounding an alarm signal on its use in particular clinical situations. Alginates present in their structure polysaccharide structures that represent an excellent substrate of microorganisms.

The purpose of this article is to examine how the work of the United Nations (UN) nurtures hybridised constructs of indigeneity, especially through the activities of the United Nations’ Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII). This article surveys particular aspects of the literature relating to cultural and indigenous hybridisation, and then applies this to the activities of the UNPFII as a means of interpreting the contribution of the organisation’s work and objectives to portrayals of indigeneity, drawing in the experiences New Zealand’s indigenous Maori as a case study. It concludes that the UNPFII—as a globalising agent—simultaneously promotes the rights of indigenous peoples while masking many of the cultural differences between its constituent members, resulting in a broad conception presented to outsiders of a single, hybridised indigeneity in the international sphere, which is defined and only exists in the hegemonic space created by the UN.

We consider the aspects of experiential marketing development as a marketing philosophy. The direction of experiential marketing was developed in line with experience economy. The concept is based on the thesis that a product or service purchase is accompanied by the impressions formation from the purchase process, and the nature of these impressions determines the consumers’loyalty to the brand of the company that offers goods or services. Experiential marketing develops at the junction of relationship marketing, emotional marketing, event marketing and show marketing. Experiential marketing is designed to make the process of purchasing a product or service more personalized. Experiential marketing began to be applied in areas related to sales of impression (hotel, restaurant business, etc.). The idea of marketing is used in the process of promoting university educational services. We cover the event promotion cases of Derzhavin Tambov State University, the essence of which reflects the ideas of experiential marketing. As a case study, we focus on experience of holding a special event “Night at Tambov State University named after G.R. Derzhavin”, aimed at development of positive impression among the guests. One of the “Night at Tambov State University named after G.R. Derzhavin” tasks was to demonstrate the university capabilities in an informal way, different from traditionally held events.

Impression technique is one of the factors affecting restoration fit accuracy, which is a major aspect influencing its survival. The purpose of this study is to compare, in vivo, the effect of two commonly used Vinyl Polysiloxane (VPS) impression techniques on the metal framework fitting of fixed partial dentures. Ninety-two consecutive patients, diagnosed as partially edentulous, treated by fixed partial denture restorations, participated in the study. Group 1-impressions (n = 44) were subjected to the 1-step technique, while group 2 impressions (n = 48) were subjected the 2-step technique. Three accuracy assessment common methods: probe, tactile sense and radiographic test, were used to validate the clinical fit of the metal framework. Misfit was defined as even one test failure. Twenty-one (22.8%) out of 92 metal frameworks exhibited metal frameworks misfit, whereas the other 71 (77.2%) were found to be accurate. Group 1 presented significantly (p = 0.04) more metal frameworks misfit, 14/44 (31.8%) vs. 7/48 (14.6%). Restoration location (maxilla vs. mandible) had no statistically significant impact on the results (p = 0.461). The use of the VPS putty/wash 2-step impression technique is recommended to improve the clinical fit of fixed partial denture restorations.

In online dating, the self-authored profile serves as the primary way for daters to introduce themselves to others and to learn more about potential partners. However, few studies have examined the extent to which daters’ self-authored profile content is consistent with the impressions that others actually form. This study applied the Brunswikian lens model (1956) to examine self-presentation and impression formation in the text-based “about me” portion of the online dating profile. Using the meaning extraction method, we analyzed 190 profiles. Consistent with the lexical approach to personality, daters were able to encode aspects of themselves through linguistic self-description (cue validity), and observers were able to decode profile information to form impressions (cue utilization). However, there were few significant associations between a dater’s self-presentation and observers’ judgments (functional achievement). Findings are interpreted in line with previous work examining self-presentation and impressions in online dating profiles.

The subjective impressions of pedestrians are necessary in order to decide on the appropriate colour of light to be used for street lighting. Therefore, a pilot project aimed to compare subjective evaluations of the sidewalk illumination under two street lighting installations, realised by LEDs of 3000 K (warm white) and 4000 K (neutral white), was recently conducted in Belgrade. Both installations had comparable sidewalk illuminances as well as other relevant photometric parameters. The evaluation was done through a questionnaire. A group of 139 (61 male and 78 female) respondents, all of them university students, was asked to grade both lighting installations for the sidewalk light intensity, the appearance of human faces, the colour of light and the colour rendering as well as the overall impression. According to the median values, the 3000 K LED installation was considered better than the 4000 K installation for all aspects assessed as well as the overall impression. Although the survey results convincingly showed a preference for 3000 K LEDs for this comparison, additional research is needed using a more representative sample of people and a wider range of locations before a definite conclusion can be reached.

Objective: Dental casts are an important aspect in the treatment planning, documentation, and analysis of the dental arch forms of infants with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Impression taking in a neonate is a technique-sensitive procedure, which can result in foreign body dislodgement and carries a small risk of aspiration and airway obstruction. The advent of digital dental technologies and intraoral scanning may facilitate safer, more effective, and accurate impressions for CLP infants. Design: A digital intraoral scan of a 3-month-old with bilateral CLP (BCLP) was compared with a conventional alginate impression taken prior to primary lip repair. Setting: Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. Main Outcome Measures: To test the applicability and accuracy of digital impression taking for a neonate with BCLP and palate using digital morphometrics. Results: The average deviation of points ranged above and below the plane of superimposition from +0.78 mm to −0.42 mm with a maximum range of +2.80 mm to −2.80 mm and standard deviation of 0.88 mm. The premaxillary segment showed the greatest degree of variation. Conclusions: This is to our knowledge the first report that illustrates the use of a digital impression system to scan the oral structures of a neonate with BCLP. Digital scanning was found to be fast, accurate, and safe, when compared to a conventional alginate impression technique.

Title: Space and Lighting Design to Support Contemplation Atmosphere in Regina Caeli Catholic Church, Jakarta The study examines how the light and space in the Church of Regina Caeli able to reinforce the presence of God?s impression and support contemplation?s atmosphere. The discussion reviewed by spatial elements (lobby/narthex, pulpit/nave, and sanctuary/chancel), enclosure elements (floors, walls, ceilings), and interior elements (furniture, decoration, and symbols). The lighting aspects explored are physical aspect (light source, technique, light distribution, colour, and level of light) and perception aspect (psychology of light). The study shows that the lighting support contemplation by emphasizing the sacred-secular space?s transition and strengthen the sacred space?s orientation. The contemplation is weakened due to the excessive number of liturgical symbols that blurring the people?s focus. As a pluriform church, Regina Caeli applying the combined effect of vertical and horizontal shape and space, but the lighting only emphasizes the horizontal effect that caused the impression of a church that is humane.

Wife assaulters attending a treatment group and women who had just exited an abusive relationship were asked to report on the extent of physical violence and emotional abuse in their relationship. Measures of socially desirable responding (SDR) were administered to both groups. Wife assaulters' self-reports of physical abuse correlated negatively with one SDR measure (the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding) but not another (the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale); emotional abuse correlated negatively with both measures. Although physical abuse was primarily related to impression management, psychological abuse was affected by both impression management and self-deception aspects of SDR. Wife assaulters' reports of their own anger also correlated negatively with SDR. Both self-deception and impression management appear to contribute to underreporting of anger. Finally, abuse victims' reports of both physical and emotional abuse were unrelated to SDR.

Purpose The purpose of this research is to analyze the perceptions of stakeholders – more specifically, socially responsible investment (SRI) practitioners – of the quality of sustainability reports using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on 33 semi-structured interviews carried out with different stakeholders and experts (e.g. consultants, fund managers, analysts, consultants) in the field of SRI in Canada. Findings The perceptions of SRI practitioners shed more light on the elastic and uncertain application of the GRI principles in determining the quality of sustainability reports. Their perceptions tend to support the argument that sustainability reports reflect the impression management strategies used by companies to highlight the positive aspects of their sustainability performance and to obfuscate negative outcomes. Originality/value First, undertake empirical research on stakeholders’ perceptions – which have been largely overlooked – of the quality of sustainability reports. Second, shed new light on the impression management strategies used in sustainability reporting. Third, show the reflexivity and the degree of skepticism of practitioners with regard to the reliability of information on sustainability performance.

The importance of intellectual capital aspects for companies makes this topic interesting to be researched today, especially related to the contribution of IC in encouraging company performance. Profitability is an appropriate benchmark in measuring the performance of a bank. One measure of profitability used is Return on Equity (ROE). ROE is used to measure the effectiveness of a company in generating profits by utilizing the equity it has. This study aims to determine the Impression of Intellectual Capital and Risk Profile on Profitability of BPR Syariah in East Java Province. This type of research used in this research is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The population used in this study were all Sharia Rural Banks (BPRS) of East Java Province which were recorded in the Financial Services Authority (OJK) for the selected period of 2015-2018 with a total population of 26 banks. The sample in this study was selected by purposive sampling. This study concludes that the NPF ratio has no effect on ROE. Except for Intellectual Capital and FDR it has a significant influence on ROE.

In his recent book, Economics – Mathematical Politics or Science of Diminishing Returns, Alexander Rosenberg has offered a forceful critique of the scientific pretensions of economics. I am encouraged to note that in his JEL review, Wade Hands (1993) singles out Rosenberg's ‘important discussion of intentionality’ as one of the most significant aspects of the book. Encouraged, because this was exactly my impression, and Hands's judgment confirmed my intention to respond to Rosenberg's argument. I hope, however, to be able to disappoint Hands's expectation that this aspect of Rosenberg's work ‘will be least challenged by economists’!

IntroductionMost individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia must cope with some form of stigmatization. Different types of public stigma, self-stigma and label avoidance, may have negative consequences for these individuals.ObjectivesThe aim of the study was to search the degree of self-stigma in schizophrenia and its association with the clinical and demographic factors.MethodsOne hundred and ninety-seven stabilized outpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders participated in the study. The mean age of the sample was 40 years. All individuals completed the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale (ISMI) and a demographic questionnaire. The disorder severity was assessed both by a psychiatrist (objCGI-S: the objective version of Clinical Global Impression – Severity scale) and by the patients (subjCGI-S: the subjective version of Clinical Global Impression – Severity scale).ResultsThe total score of the ISMI positively correlated with the severity of the disorder measured by the objCGI-S and the subjCGI-S. Additionally, the self-stigma positively correlated with the treatment duration, and the number of hospitalizations. The regression analysis identified these regressors as the most relevant to the self-stigma – the number of hospitalizations, the severity of the disorder rated by a psychiatrist, and the difference between the objective rating and the subjective rating of the severity of the disorder.ConclusionsOutpatients with psychosis, who have undergone a higher number of hospitalizations, dispose of a higher severity of the disorder and show a bigger discrepancy between their rating of the severity and the psychiatric rating, display a greater degree of self-stigma.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the underlying mechanism of how passive social networking site (SNS) use happens from aspects of impression management concern, privacy concern, and SNS fatigue, and then examine whether sense of membership can work as a moderator in this process. Design/methodology/approach The authors proposed a research model by integrating impression management concern, privacy concern, and SNS fatigue. A total of 301 valid online questionnaires were collected, and these data were assessed by PLS-SEM. Findings The results show that both impression management concern and privacy concern have direct and positive effects on passive SNS use, and meanwhile they can also indirectly and positively affect passive SNS use through SNS fatigue. Besides, the relationships between impression management concern and its outcomes (SNS fatigue and passive SNS use) can be moderated by sense of membership. Originality/value This research is novel in focusing on the formation of passive SNS use and providing new insight into some factors which can trigger users’ passive behaviors in SNS usage. The findings will contribute to SNS literature by offering a well proven conceptual model that facilitates the understanding of passive SNS use.

The creative character of reading is revealed through the elucidation of its temporal constitutions and consideration of some practical aspects of this phenomenon. Reading isn’t intellectual, aesthetical procedure, but co-being between a text and a reader. Reading is one of the ways of becoming and forming in human being specific metaphysical organs. Thanks to them there are some actual conditions of freedom, love, faith, virtue, responsibility etc. Impression as point-wise part of time, orienting on presence and changing with every new phase of reading text is shown. Impression isn’t feeling, but invasion, that includes intensity, completeness of action. That’s why reading text should impress and invade in limits of being of a reader, catch them, hold them by its energy his attention. Michaelis-Menten pharmacokinetic parameters for theophylline were estimated in a three-month infant following an accidental overdose of intravenous aminophylline. Fitting of time-concentration data was performed using nonlinear regression with MKMODEL. A mixed order elimination model was superior to a first order model. Parameter estimates were standardized to a 70 kg human using an allometric power model. Parameter estimates (SE) were: maximum rate of metabolism (Vmax) 71(42) mg.h–1, Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) 32.3 (33.5) mg.l–1, volume of distribution (Vd) 46.9 (2.6) l. This Michaelis-Menten constant is lower than that reported for adults and consequently non-linear elimination will occur at lower plasma concentrations in infants than in adults. Theophylline clearance has traditionally been reported as directly proportional to body weight. This per kilogram model gives an erroneous impression that clearance is greatest in early childhood and then decreases with age until adult rates are reached in late adolescence. Age-related clearance values reported in the literature were reviewed using an allometric 3/4 power model. This size model demonstrates that clearance increases in infancy and reaches adult rates in the first one to two years of life.

Keywords: registered industrial designs, novelty, individual character, administrativeprocedure, invalidity The new edition of the Law of Ukraine «On the Protection of Rights to Industrial Designs» No. 3770-XII,adopted on October 14, 2020, introduced significant changes to the regulation of thelegal protection of industrial designs. The basic norms of the law were harmonizedwith the articles 212−217 Chapter 9 «Intellectual Property» of the Association Agreementbetween Ukraine, on the one hand, and the European Union, the EuropeanAtomic Energy Community and their Member States, on the other hand. The conceptsof «individual character», «the overall impression», «the informed user» and «thedegree of freedom of the designer», «the circles specializing in the relevant industry»have been introduced into the sphere of legal protection. These concepts were not previouslyused in the legislation of Ukraine. The article analyzes the content of theseconcepts on the basis of European law enforcement practice, Decision of the EuropeanUnion Intellectual Property Office Board of Appeal, Judgment of the Court of Justiceof the European Union и Judgment of the General Court of the European Union. Inaccordance with the new edition of the Law, an industrial design can be declared invalidin an administrative procedure. Authors reviewed the administrative procedure for establishing the conformity of a registered industrial design to the criteria for protection(a novelty and an individual character). A registered industrial design shall beconsidered to be new, if no identical design has been previously disclosed to the publicand to have an individual character if the overall impression it produces on the informeduser differs from the overall impression produced on such a user by any previouslydisclosed design. A design shall be deemed to have been made available to thepublic (i) if it has been published following registration or otherwise, or exhibited,used in trade or otherwise disclosed, (ii) except where these events could not reasonablyhave become known in the normal course of business to the circles specializing inthe relevant industry in Ukraine. Authors analyzed this two-step test. Particular attentionwas paid to the disclosure of industrial designs as a trade mark, copyrightwork, patent, utility model or otherwise on the Internet. If pleasure is more open than pain to a double definition, first as a real sensation, second as a more indirect impression, it is clear that the calculus – the advantages of which Bentham praised so fulsomely − cannot be identical for pleasure and pain alike. Sensations may be combined in the infinitesimal calculus in a substantive way, but this is impossible for the more indirect reflective impressions, which require other sorts of mathematics. For Bentham, it is not a question of eschewing calculation, but of facilitating it, perhaps through a probability calculus in a Bayesian or subjective style. The theory of fictions permits the combination or substitution of the two aspects of pleasure, so that what seems to be an ambiguity in Bentham's approach to pleasure is really an attempt to render the concept useful, that is, capable of utilization in calculations bearing on important areas of practical policy.

Purpose In higher education, blended learning is already strongly established. The e-courses vary in their structure, assignments, prompt examinations, interaction between students and teachers, etc. Such aspects may influence the students’ perception of usefulness of blended learning. The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors which influence that feeling and to look for possible differences in perception by different subgroups of students. Design/methodology/approach Students in the survey evaluated 13 aspects of e-courses in which they were enrolled. From enrolment documents, additional demographic data were collected (gender, high-school grade, study programme, etc.). A multiple linear regression was used with perceived usefulness as the response variable and the 12 other e-course aspects as predictors. Further, the same regression analysis was performed on different subgroups of students based on demographical data. Findings The empirical results showed that the general impression regarding the e-courses, their consistency with the face-to-face teaching and the teachers’ responsiveness had a significant influence on the students’ perception of the usefulness of e-courses. Further analysis based on demographic data revealed several subgroups of students where the perception of usefulness was influenced by different aspects. The teachers’ feedback and supplementing the tutorial play an important role in higher years of study, while the general impression loses its influence. Originality/value The paper is the first to explore the importance of demographic determinants of perceived usefulness of e-learning tools in EAPAA (European Association of Public Administration Accreditation)-accredited undergraduate public administration programmes.

Communication is a very decisive aspect for the delivery of public services, so service providers must know how to communicate well so that they can influence others in the service. This research uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Interviews were conducted with informants determined by purposive sampling, the informants were employees who handled services at DLHK Karawang, and the society who received services. And use one of three important aspects/dimensions in public service communication, namely Institution/Corporate Image. The results showed that, communication of public services provided by the PPL DLHK Karawang had given a pretty good impression. Communities and companies have received complete information and good service, because important aspects/dimensions in service communication already exist in the DLHKKarawang. However there are still some shortcomings, DLHKKarawang does not have brochures, leaflets or films about services. Yet in the implementation of public service communication must pay attention to all things that can support the achievement of the goal of providing excellent service.

AbstractAlexander’s conquest of Persia transformed the way he ruled, with aspects of Achaemenid monarchy becoming prominent. In general, historians have focused on instances of deliberate engagement with Achaemenid practices (e. g. dress, proskynesis, etc.), leading to the impression that this change resulted from conscious imitation. Here, I nuance this view, arguing that the gradual adoption of aspects of Achaemenid royal space played a pivotal role in transforming Alexander’s monarchy. This approach shifts our focus away from Alexander himself, placing his reign in a wider context, while also demonstrating how space can act as a conduit for cultural interchange.

Abstract This paper analyses the performance of Differential Head-Related Transfer Function (DHRTF), an alternative transfer function for headphone-based virtual sound source positioning within a horizontal plane. This experimental one-channel function is used to reduce processing and avoid timbre affection while preserving signal features important for sound localisation. The use of positioning algorithm employing the DHRTF is compared to two other common positioning methods: amplitude panning and HRTF processing. Results of theoretical comparison and quality assessment of the methods by subjective listening tests are presented. The tests focus on distinctive aspects of the positioning methods: spatial impression, timbre affection, and loudness fluctuations. The results show that the DHRTF positioning method is applicable with very promising performance; it avoids perceptible channel coloration that occurs within the HRTF method, and it delivers spatial impression more successfully than the simple amplitude panning method.

Introduction. Digital impressions in implant dentistry rely on many variables, and their accuracy, particularly in complete edentulous patients, is not well understood. Aim. The purpose of this literature review was to determine which factors may influence the accuracy of digital impressions in implant dentistry. Emphasized attention was given to the design of the intra-oral scan body (ISB) and scanning techniques. Materials and methods. A Medline, PubMed and EBSCO Host databases search, complemented by a hand search, was performed in order to select relevant reports regarding the appliance of digital impressions in implant dentistry. The search subject included but was not limited to accuracy of digital impressions in implant dentistry, digital scanning techniques, the design and material of the ISBs, and the depth and angulation of the implant. The related titles and abstracts were screened, and the remaining articles that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected for full-text readings. Results. The literature search conducted for this review initially resulted in 108 articles, among which only 21 articles fulfilled the criteria for inclusion. Studies were evaluated according to five subjects: accuracy of digital impressions in implant dentistry; the design and material of the intra-oral scan bodies; scanning technique; the influence of implants depth/angulations on the digital impression and accuracy of different intra-oral scanner devices. Conclusions. The accuracy of digital impressions in implant dentistry depends on several aspects. The depth/angulation of the implant, the experience of the operator, the intra-oral scanner used, and environmental conditions may influence the accuracy of digital impressions in implant dentistry. However, it seems that ISBs’ design and material, as well as scanning technique, have a major impact on the trueness and precision of digital impressions in implant dentistry. Future research is suggested for the better understanding of this subject, focusing on the optimization of the ISB design and scanning protocols.

The perception of organizational politics seriously affects working people, and it is an unavoidable detrimental aspect of an organization. Prior studies are focused on the detrimental consequences of perceived organizational politics and not paid attention to its remedial actions. Therefore, proper intervention as a corrective action for the harmful effect of organizational politics perception was essential. Hence, this study was motivated to know: (a) the effect of the perception of organizational politics on employees’ performance, and (b) the mitigating role of impression management (self-promotion and ingratiation) for the detrimental effect of perception of organizational politics on work performance. Perceptual cross-sectional data was taken from 725 employees working in Nepalese banks. Quantitative data analysis revealed that perception of organizational politics has a detrimental impact on employee performance; impression management (self-promotion and ingratiation) worked as an antidote for such effects. The study’s unique findings were a different form of association of perception of organizational politics with work performance under the different situations of impression management (self-promotion and ingratiation). Moreover, those employees were less suffered from the perceived organizational politics who were good in impression management (self-promotion and ingratiation). Impression management (self-promotion and ingratiation) is controlled, as an antidote, comparatively more effectively for the high poli-tics perceiver than the low perceiver. Numbers of theoretical and practical implications are suggested to cure perceived organizational politics’ detrimental outcomes on employee performance. AbstractIn this paper, we analyze the ways in which the use of animals is described in the "Methods" sections of scientific papers. We focus particularly on aspects of the language of scientific narrative and what it conveys to the reader about the animals. Scientific writing, for example, tends to omit details of how the animals are cared for. Perhaps more importantly, it is constructed in ways that tend to minimize what is happening to the animal; thus, animal death is obscured by euphemisms, omission, or circumlocutions. What is done to animals is, moreover, often subordinate in the text to the details of experimental procedures and apparatus. We consider how such writing supports a particular kind of image of the "animal" in science, and also creates an impression that what happens to animals is somehow devoid of human agency. This impression, we argue, contributes to the way science is perceived by a wider public.

Coronary artery disease in Asians deserves far more attention than it has received in the literature to date. Most of the available reports focus on immigrants from the Indian subcontinent. These immigrants have a significantly higher risk of coronary artery disease than either their compatriots who do not emigrate or the indigenous population of their adopted countries. This finding cannot be explained on the basis of standard coronary risk factors. There is a general clinical impression that Asians of all nationalities have smaller coronary arteries and more diffuse coronary disease than other ethnic groups; therefore, they are less suitable candidates for conventional bypass grafting. This impression remains a source of controversy. Our experience at the Texas Heart Institute indicates that, after coronary bypass surgery, early and long-term results in Asians are as satisfactory as in other ethnic groups. However, much more research is needed to explain the many paradoxical aspects of coronary disease in Asian patients.

Anatomy has historically been a cornerstone in medical education regardless of nation, racial background, or medical school system. By learning gross anatomy, medical students get a first “impression” about the structure of the human body which is the basis for understanding pathologic and clinical problems. Although the importance of teaching anatomy to both undergraduate and postgraduate students remains undisputed, there is currently a relevant debate concerning methods of anatomy teaching. In the past century, dissection and lectures were its sole pedagogy worldwide. Recently, the time allocated for anatomy teaching was dramatically reduced to such an extent that some suggest that it has fallen below an adequate standard. Traditional anatomy education based on topographical structural anatomy taught in lectures and gross dissection classes has been replaced by a multiple range of study modules, including problem-based learning, plastic models or computer-assisted learning, and curricula integration. “Does the anatomical theatre still have a place in medical education?” And “what is the problem with anatomic specimens?” We endeavor to answer both of these questions and to contribute to the debate on the current situation in undergraduate and graduate anatomy education.

In his introduction to Orientalism, Edward Said defines the West's conceptualization of the East as a European invention which had been ‘since antiquity a place of romance, exotic beings, haunting memories and landscapes, remarkable experiences’. He further posits that this conceptualization has formed a basis on which western civilizations build self-definition. The Orient, therefore, has shifted from the imaginary to the actual. This creation of a culture in opposition has enabled Europeans to construct an impression of their collective ‘Self’ as reflected by the oriental ‘Other’. In this regard, Said formulates the notion of the orientalization of the Orient. Europe, in creating the demarcation of the world into East and West, has sought to locate its own proper topological and cultural place within a global scheme. While setting up the parameters of ‘western civilization’, the West defines the East. Since the known world at the time of this demarcation consisted of Europe, Asia, and the northern extremities of Africa, everything outside these designated parameters becomes the ‘Other’. Philosophies and concepts disorienting to western thought become the Orient.
