Don Lee reworked his eight magazine stories to varying degrees, arranged the sequence of the stories in a specific order, and published a short-story cycle in 2001. Significantly, the writer changed the ethnic identity of some characters from white American to Asian American. He also added and highlighted Asian American themes and issues. In short, Lee made an “Asian American” short-story cycle par excellence by coloring his stories yellow. This essay examines Lee's rewriting and arrangement of his magazine stories for an Asian American short-story cycle. It first compares the differences between the magazine and cycle versions of the stories. It goes on to examine totalizing devices such as the common setting, recurrent places, connective characters, and unifying themes. Lastly, it elucidates the arrangement of the eight stories and significance of the title story in the cycle. It ultimately argues that Don Lee retrofitted his magazine stories extensively and meticulously for a short-story cycle in order to portray the diverse aspects of post-immigrant Asian America at the turn of the century from his positionality as a third-generation Korean American.

In teaching Southeast Asian literature in English in Thailand, a lecturer presented a brief historical background of each country. After lecturing on each country’s literature background, the students were assigned to write the reflection essays on short stories studied in class. Then, a lecturer summarized the issues discussed in class and from students’ reflection essays. This article is resulted from the case study of teaching modern Southeast Asian Literary Works in English at IAC international studies ASEAN-CHINA program, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat university, Thailand. A lecturer and students discovered gender and political issues in Laotian, Burmese and Vietnamese short stories. Laotian and Vietnamese short stories A Bar at the Edge of Cemetery and The Khaki Coat represent writers’ attitudes towards their communist/socialist government. Laos and Vietnam share social problems such as poverty-famine, economic inequality and class struggle. Additionally, Laotian, Burmese and Vietnamese short stories also portray gender issues such as gender inequality, women’s liberation movements, and the effects of war on women.

This paper explores the discourse on womanhood in the Asian context by delving into the narratives of women characters in five short stories by three Asian writers. Specifically, it attempted to determine the images associated with Asian women based on the portrayal of the main protagonists in the selected short stories. It then analysed how these images construct womanhood and perpetuate such ideal in the Asian mindset. Viewed from both formalist and constructionist lenses, findings show that the women protagonists are relegated to their three-pronged traditional roles/images: daughter, wife, and mother. These images, in turn, shape how these characters behave and are seen by other characters - submissive, self-sacrificing and subjugated. However, despite an unrelentingly difficult life, all the five women still struggle to survive. Such act seems inconsistent with the above stereotypical construct of womanhood, though a closer look actually shows a different side to the said construct: strong, steadfast and resilient/survivalist. Not all of the protagonists overcome their tragic lives. Nonetheless, all five women manage to convey that the concept of womanhood is more complex than how it had been perceived in the past. This complexity is clearly illustrated in the lived realities of many Asian women today.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, a writer who immigrated to the USA from a Postcolonial Indian background. Her works are largely set in India and the United States and often focuses on the experiences of South Asian women immigrants. Divakaruni’s immigrant characters analyze the tension between postcolonial origins and an adjustment in new country. Arranged Marriage is Divakaruni’s debut collection of short stories. The collection has eleven short stories and majority of the stories deal with the immigrant experience along with the social cultural encounter that an Indian women experience when she moves towards west. Arranged Marriage includes stories about the abuse and courage of immigrant women. Divakaruni skillfully tells stories about immigrant women struggling to shape out an identity of their own in an unknown land.

This article analyzes three short stories of refugee expulsion, immigrant displacement, and exilic return by contemporary writer Trần Vũũ. Beyond the binary of nostalgia and assimilation, Vietnamese diasporic identity emerges in these narratives as the tenuous subject of physical and psychic trauma. Informed by postcolonial theories of diasporic identity, Asian American scholarship on racial abjection, and psychoanalytic and feminist analyses of trauma and sexual deviance, I argue that the characters in these stories either succumb to or subvert the unwitting repetition of trauma in their attempts to challenge, if only precariously, patterns of domination through sadomasochism and counternationalist historiography.

This article is a preliminary examination of how Southeast Asian media frame the regional integration of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a news topic. Without grassroots engagement, the ASEAN integration will inevitably fall short of its grand objectives, and crucial to building grassroots engagement is media coverage capable of building audience interest and appreciation. Based on articles published during the major ASEAN summit events in 2018, the authors identified resonant themes in the reportage and discussed these vis-a-vis the documented character of the different media environments in the region. It was found that the axis of the reportage is the declarations and actions of the heads of state, with very few human interest and context-building stories that would have built audience engagement in what is otherwise an affair revolving around ‘men in suits’. Moreover, the journalistic emphasis on consensus and state initiatives reflects continuing adherence to the tenets of the development journalism framework, but this can also be interpreted as the dominance of ‘prominence’ as a news value (i.e. stories are framed according to the gestures of prominent individuals). These findings call attention to the need for re-thinking reportage on potentially high-stake phenomena such as the ASEAN integration.

This research explored the lives and worldviews of Asian immigrants in the United States presented in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's stories in The Unknown Errors of Our Lives (2001). Central characters in Divakaruni's narratives embody the sufferings of immigrants in the New Land. Precisely it was proposed to study the stories from the perspective of the diaspora. In this collection, the researcher has selected five stories, including "Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter," "The Intelligence of Wild Things," "The Blooming Season for Cacti," "The Names of Stars in Bengali," and "The Unknown Errors of Our Lives." Since the characters like Mrs. Dutta, Mira, Radhika, and Kahuku's mother emigrate from India to different zones of America, they combat issues of cultural contradiction, identity crisis, disruption and family strives. Unlike them, Tarun, Mrs. Dutta's son, and her family are assimilated into the American society, whereas the characters such as Mrs. Dutta, Didi, and Mira recurrently remember their original house and early childhood days with friends. It is because they are fragmented and frustrated in America. The study concluded that the characters in her stories are ambitious and want to live a luxurious life but because of the lack of opportunities, they could not fulfill their desires and even some of them decided to return to their homeland to get a better life.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the Japanese proletarian literary movement had an enormous impact on East Asian writers, who often translated and adapted Japanese tales. Amongst them, Hayama Yoshiki’s 1925 short story “Inbaifu” (The Prostitute) enjoyed great popularity. This paper focuses on the Taiwanese writer Lang-shi-sheng’s adaptation of “Inbaifu”, the 1935 “Yami” (Darkness), and Manchukuo writer Yuan Xi’s adaptation of the same Japanese source text, the 1938 short story “Shi tian” (Ten Days). By comparing the Taiwanese and Manchukuo stories, this paper suggests that both versions of “Inbaifu” reflect the Japanese debate on proletarian literature that was fashionable in East Asia in the 1930s. However, by resetting the stories in Taiwan and Manchukuo, respectively, the authors created cultural products that defy borders and simple nationalist interpretations.

Pada abad ke-21, perspektif ini telah meluas ke kekuasaan manusia terhadap alam. Isu kerusakan alam dalam beberapa dekade terakhir merupakan hasil dari eksploitasi manusia atas alam yang melibatkan relasi kuasa dan marjinalisasi kaum tertindas dalam konsep kolonialisme. Kerusakan alam, eksploitasi alam, dan marjinalisasi kaum tertindas dalam konteks Asia ditampilkan dalam tiga cerpen Indonesia yang berjudul Pekik Burung Kedasi di Tepi Kahayan (Crying Cuckoos over the Kahayan), Cenning Rara, dan Pohon Pongo (Pongo’s Caring Tree). Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mematahkan persepsi Eropa terhadap Asia bahwa Timur adalah wilayah yang terbelakang dan tidak berbudaya serta tidak mampu memimpin dirinya sendiri dalam isu-isu penyelamatan dunia. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kepustakaan. Melalui pendekatan poskolonial ekokritik, hasil penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa (1) cara pandang Eropa terhadap Asia yang tidak berbudaya, tidak berpendidikan, dan tidak mampu menyuarakan pemikirannya adalah menyesatkan, (2) masyarakat Asia memiliki hubungan yang kuat dengan alam dan dapat disejajarkan dengan Eropa untuk membangun dunia dengan cara menyelamatkan alam.Asia has never been free from issues of oppression, marginalization, and exploitation in terms of race, politics, economy, gender, etc. that Westerners have inflicted on Easterners. In the twenty-first century, this perspective has expanded to human power over nature. The issue of natural destruction in recent decades is the result of human exploitation of nature involves power relations and marginalization of the oppressed in the concept of colonialism. The destruction of nature, natural exploitation, and marginalization of the oppressed in the Asian context is shown in three Indonesian short stories entitled Pekik Burung Kedasi di Tepi Kahayan (Crying Cuckoos over the Kahayan), Cenning Rara, and Pohon Pongo (Pongo’s Caring Tree). The purpose of this paper is to break the European perception of Asia that the East is a backward region with uncultured people who are unable to lead themselves in world-saving issues. This study uses library research. Through the ecocritical postcolonial approach, the results state that (1) the European perspective on Asia as uncultured, uneducated, and unable to voice their thoughts is misleading, (2) Asians have a strong relationship with nature and can be aligned with Europe to build the world through saving nature.

In this essay, I want to analyze how maternal instinct is depicted in one short story which has South East Asia as a setting of place because this maternal instinct has became one of the most debatable issues in feminist study until nowadays. The main data is a short story entitled Broken. This short story was included in anthology of Asian short stories entitled A Rainbow Feast. One thing which becomes uniqueness in Broken that picks my interest is how this novel exploits woman acts and habits in different way than any other novel. VerenaTay through this novel tells a story about one particular woman and how she treats her newborn baby. Different with other novel, Broken pictures the woman who lives in different world than us, a human. It is interesting to see how VrenaTay pictures that woman acts and somehow lives after she was dead, how a woman escapes from subversive condition and move toward dominant one by leap through the limit of life and death.

The rapid movement and changes in technology have brought great transformations in many aspects. It does not only affect how people live but also their ways of thinking and perceptions. Almost all aspects are transformed into digital, and one of them is literature. The digitalization of literature has used various media, features, and forms. It is also widely known that digital literature has gained popularity nowadays. Teens today spend more time using their gadgets to access online platforms that are visually more appealing than the traditional version. For young people, who mostly use social media in their daily life, digital literature gives them easier access and better visuals. On the other hand, most digital literature works are also free and easy to access. Since digital literature is closely related to young people’s lives, many young writers use social media platforms to express their feelings. Thus, this paper aims to interrogate the issue of the search for identity that is faced by Asian-American teenagers, the impact of the predicament on them, and how they select their identity and define themselves. In investigating those problems, the researchers borrow five social media literature works, “Asian is not My Brand”, “Snippets of Time”, “Clay”, “Not American Enough”, and “Mocking an Asian Accent is Never Funny”, that are taken from the @dearasianyouthliterature Instagram platform. This issue is important to be discussed because the works were written by Asian-American teenagers who experience stereotyping, predicament, and ambivalence. In unveiling the issue of identity, the researchers used descriptive qualitative study and documentation as the data collection method. In addition, Bhabha’s theory on ambivalence, in-betweenness, third space, and hybridity was also used to illuminate the researchers in deconstructing the problem. From these two social media short stories, the researchers find that Asian-American teenagers have to face predicaments and dilemmas because they are seen as not Asian enough to be Asian, as well as not American enough to be American. Furthermore, the researchers discovered that Asian-American teenagers decide to voice the voiceless and embrace and celebrate their Asian-American identity. Lastly, these social media short stories have not been discussed widely by Indonesian researchers; thus, it is a good opportunity to have a scholarly discussion using social media literature works.

Through an ecocritical perspective, this paper investigates the issue of ecological consciousness in children's literature from Southeast Asia. With a focus on four tales from Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia, the study explores the interaction between people and the environment—more specifically, rivers and oceans. The purpose of the study is to expose anthropocentrism and how it affects human existence in these stories. The study uses content analysis in conjunction with a descriptive qualitative method to look for recurring themes and patterns in the chosen stories. The portrayal of human-environment links in each narrative is examined in depth in the first section of the examination. The role of rivers and oceans as allies and adversaries is examined in the second section. By analyzing various Southeast Asian viewpoints, this study adds to our understanding of ecological consciousness in children's literature and illuminates the complex interactions that exist in the area between the environment and humankind.

Even though staunch feminist writers take up responsibilities to represent them, the question of identity remains unresolved because of insufficient understanding of women’s psyche and sensitivity. This study focuses on the psychoanalytical behavior of women in phallocentric society to investigate how gender discrimination depends on the social identities of interacting parties. This study examines women’s identities in the selected short stories by Ismat Chughtai and Zaib-Un-Nisa Hamidullah to explore how women’s gender and their inhibitions create difficulties in self-representations for them. This research takes into account the South Asian socio-cultural settings in which Chughtai and Hamidullah's works are placed. Both writers have addressed the core issues related to women’s life going deep into their psychology. Employing the theoretical underpinnings of Chandra Talpade Mohanty, this research would engage with the lived experiences of the women of the sub-continent and highlight the debates and remedies to resolve their issues. The study seeks to clarify how patriarchal systems, power dynamics, and psychoanalytic processes affect women's sense of self and agency through an analysis of the women’s experiences. The findings shed light on more general concerns of gender, identity, and empowerment as well as feminist literary criticism.

Prostitutes encountered and continue to experience a great deal of trauma related to their existence and profession—which is not even considered or recognised by society, especially in South Asian countries, even after the legalisation of prostitution—sex workers have no respect and place in society, and hardly any writer or radical thinkers have written about them. In the late 1990s, major figures in the movement for sex workers' rights openly questioned the queer theorists' silence on the matter of prostitution and sex work. Not much has been done to emphasise the expressly queer side of sex work, despite efforts made by sex workers to "come out of the closet" and engage with the larger queer theoretical community. The absence of any discussion of how sex functions in queer theory refutes the logical inference suggesting that it has no relevance to this area of research. Prostitution can also be referred to as queer profession because their lives are full of traumatic experiences. Only a small number of authors from South Asian nations have written or spoken about prostitution. Among them are Sadat Hasan Manto and Kamala Surayya Das, whose short stories “Insult” (Hatak), “The Hundred Candle Power Bulb”, “A Doll for a Child Prostitute,” and “Padmavati The Harlot” accurately, surreally, and impartially depict the life, surroundings, and struggle of sex workers. The most extended and most in-depth story in her collection of short stories, "A Doll for the Kid Prostitute," features an inspector sahib who has had enough of women and demands a fresh child recruit, Rukmani. The inspector pulled her dress and transformed her into a prostitute without even considering her age; the sentence, which solely described the inspector's conduct, was harsh. This made their first encounter painful. With this awful first encounter, Das creates a world of unrestrained carnality in which innocence must perish. The short novella emphasises the issue of prostitution and how it affects women. The stories of individuals like Sita, Meera, Laxmibai, her son, Saraswati, Krishna, etc. are very well portrayed, and they are all intriguing. Das regularly uses the dramatic approach and writes realistic stories. She expresses herself artistically primarily through discourse. Manto’s story "A Hundred Candle-Power Bulb" demonstrates how prostitution and division coexist because pimps are prepared to exchange their most important resource: prostitutes, even in the midst of riots between various ethnic groups.

AbstractThe leech-derived hirudins and hirudin-like factors (HLFs) share a common molecule structure: a short N-terminus, a central globular domain, and an elongated C-terminal tail. All parts are important for function. HLF6 and HLF7 were identified in the Asian medicinal leech, Hirudinaria manillensis. The genes of both factors encode putative splice variants that differ in length and composition of their respective C-terminal tails. In either case, the tails are considerably shorter compared to hirudins. Here we describe the functional analyses of the natural splice variants and of synthetic variants that comprise an altered N-terminus and/or a modified central globular domain. All natural splice variants of HLF6 and HLF7 display no detectable thrombin-inhibitory potency. In contrast, some synthetic variants effectively inhibit thrombin, even with tails as short as six amino acid residues in length. Our data indicate that size and composition of the C-terminal tail of hirudins and HLFs can vary in a great extent, yet the full protein may still retain the ability to inhibit thrombin.

The liberation of India from British domination in 1947 was the most significant historical event in the South Asian history. Despite the fact that freedom promised only liberty, equality, and fraternity, the only result was widespread violence, which eventually led to British-India being divided into two sovereign dominions (India and Pakistan). This Partition resulted in the loss of houses, properties, friends, relatives, and, most importantly, identity. The purpose of this paper is to look at how Jhumpa Lahiri addresses diasporic concerns, unpleasant partition experiences, and fractured cultural identity in two of her short- stories, “When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine” and “A Real Durwan”, from her collection, Interpreter of Maladies. Lahiri, an Indian immigrant from the United Kingdom, is well aware of the difficulties that immigrants experience in their host country. She has brilliantly depicted the painful consequences of partition in the works described above, especially the bloodshed that occurs during the civil war between East and West Pakistan. Jhumpa Lahiri is a writer of South Asian origin who was born and brought up in the United States. She debuted with her short story collection Interpreter of Maladies. The stories in this collection glance at the Indo-American diaspora. All the nine stories in this collection are aligned with the recurring patterns. The institution of marriage, romantic relationship and Indian family system vs American family pattern has been focused at length. The subtitle of the novel goes perfectly with the themes of the stories. Geetha Ganapathy- Dore’ notes that “Indian people, films, novels, beauty-queens, food and spirituality cross borders easily.” She adds that Lahiri’s collection was originally sub-titled ‘Bengal, Boston and Beyond’ (58) The three stories chosen for study reflect a modern world that witnesses the assimilation of different cultures and problem of immigrants while living in an ethnic group. “Temporary Matter”, “Sexy” and “Interpreter of Maladies” have been chosen to make the study specific. All of these emphasize on the life and circumstances leading to the rift in marriage and relationships deficit of love. This work also reflects the diaspora experiences of the Indian immigrants belonging to the first and second generation. The lucidity of language and expression are quite commendable.

Ismat Chughtai is one of the most celebrated South Asian women writers from the past century. Hence, most of the scholarship based on her few female characters from a select few stories largely deals with analysing the nature of female desire and sexuality. In this paper, we have extended the focus from sexual repression to the analysis of the power-paradigm in the space called zenana (domestic space)and its role in producing docile bodies. By using a Foucauldian framework in her lesser-explored short stories, namely, “Gainda” (transl. “Gainda”), “Gharwali” (transl. “The Homemaker”), and “Chui-Mui” (transl. “Touch-me-not”), we aim to explore the themes of surveillance, norms, and punishment and how these play a role in training individuals to be obedient to power structures and institutions. Moreover, we want to explore whether they always produce homogenised bodies or if there is a space for individual agency.

South-Asian diasporic authors write out of their specific cultural, individual and collective needs that relate to their experiences of racism, ethnic discrimination and sexism in the new space. The task at hand is to re-structure and re-constitute alien paradigms to suit the spaces inhabited by the immigrant. Immigrant writing involves a powerful “presencing” of source and host cultures. There are indeed variations within the immigrant groups in terms of the degree of retention of ethnic cultural values, the behavioural patterns and the degree of accommodation arrived at with the demands of the host culture. These various facets of immigrant experience, that are thrown into focus as a result of cross-cultural encounter, point to the shared experiences of the immigrant communities, which constitute the ethos of the diaspora. Diaspora is an important conceptual tool because it highlights the multiple standpoints borne of migration and displacement. It illuminates an ambivalent politics of positioning and being positioned, of identification and being identified.In her debut collection of short stories Interpreter of Maladies, also called, “stories of Bengal, Boston and Beyond”, Jhumpa Lahiri probes deeply into the maladies of cultural dislocation and the consequential emotional trauma. This paper analyses four short stories titled “A Temporary Matter”, “The Third and Final Continent”, “Mrs. Sen’s” and “Interpreter of Maladies” in the anthology and attempts to trace how the immigrants who vacillate between two cultures overcome the identity crisis they face.

This paper discusses the depiction of ‘middle-class values’ by the celebrated Indian writer R.K. Narayan. Malgudi, a fictional South Indian town, is a prototypical representation of typical Indian society and the literary works of Narayan vividly mirror the everyday happenings. Content analysis of selected short stories, namely, ‘Forty-Five a Month,’ “Iswaran” and “Sweets for Angels,”; reveal the peculiarity of the Indian middle class and the author’s apt derision of certain lifestyle practices associated with modernity. Set in the backdrop of the 1930s, the stories capture the labyrinth of social issues and problems that plague South Asian societies. For instance, educational achievement is considered to be of utmost importance for preserving one’s status and the achievement of social mobility by the middle class. Ironically, educational success is often unsuccessful in buying freedom from alienating and oppressive livelihood practices engaging the middle class. There is also an accompanying erosion of ‘social capital’ and the expanding “radius of distrust.”

Use of technology is an indispensable feature of modernity. But communities imagined along modern lines use technology in multifarious ways, be it print or digital technology. Benedict Anderson in his pathbreaking study of how nation socio-culturally comes into being stresses the decisive role print technology (in the form of newspaper and realist novel) plays in constructing the community of nations. In a globalized world, however, the role of print technology in imagining larger collectivities as well as home is being fast replaced by information and media technology. Nowhere are such uses of the later technologies perhaps as prominent as in diasporas. Diasporic communities, though largely defined by the parameter of deterritorialization, attempt to appropriate and use technology (especially media technology) with a view to “producing locality,” to borrow from Arjun Appadurai. That is to say, diasporas resort to technology to cope with the often traumatic sense of dislocation and minimize the overwhelming sense of insecurity in an alien cultural environment. In the present article, I intend to look closely at the uses of technology in general and media technology in particular by Indian/South Asian diaspora in some of the short stories of Jhumpa Lahiri. The more precise critical agenda here is to examine how Indian/South Asian diaspora utilizes (media) technology to construct “home” or a sense of “homeness” in the selected stories.

In the 2016 movie Arrival, aliens with advanced technology appear on Earth in spaceships reminiscent of the black obelisk in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film presents this arrival as a serious problem to be solved, with the future of human life and interplanetary relationships in the balance. The short story, “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang, on which the film was based, takes a different, amusing route that essentially depicts an ideal vision of the era of colonialism. To articulate this reading, this article will compare Chiang’s science fiction (SF) to the genre in general and will take Isiah Lavender III’s positionality of otherhood to reveal how Chiang’s work expresses a Chinese American secular faith in a moral universe. It will analyze the narrative form in Chiang’s collection, Stories of Your Life and Others, and will use it to compare the prose and film versions of “Story of Your Life.” It will also explain how Chiang may be using a nonlinear orthography and variational principles of physics to frame multileveled humor. It utilizes theories of humor by John Morreall and analyses of Chinese American secularity by Russell Jeung and concludes that Chiang’s work reflects concerns and trends of Asian Americans’ secularized religions.

Southeast Asian colonial experiences are of immense significance yet under-exposed. It entails an irony as Southeast Asia as a geographical entity is one of the most colonized regions in the history of humankind. This paper serves to provide an elaboration of the Chinese Singaporean colonial experiences during the British occupation in Singapore in a steampunk short story entitled “Working Woman” by Olivia Ho. This short story is compiled in an anthology of Southeast Asian steampunk short stories named The Sea is Ours: Tales from Steampunk Southeast Asia edited by Jaymee Goh and Joyce Chng. Postcolonial feminism approach is utilized as the critical framework in the analysis of the story. The analysis finds that there are three contesting themes in the narrative namely 1) the reception of forced migration of the Chinese that result in their permanent residence in Singapore, 2) double colonization undergone by the Chinese female characters, and 3) the resistance toward British colonial power and patriarchal subjugation in the Singaporean Chinese society. The three themes intermingle as a linear course of history rather than an independent sub-historical phenomenon within the fiction. Thus, the reception of Chinese migration in the fiction is made possible by the arrival of British colonialism in Singapore and as a result, discrimination and resistance of Chinese women become the implication of the contact of colonialism and migration.

Gayatri Spivak’s repeated accusations against the hyphenated Americans of colluding in their own exploitation is noteworthy in the context of diasporic writers’ portrayal of immigrant women within the prevailing discourse of anti-Communism in the United States. The woman in South Asian American writings is often portrayed as still stuck in the traditional prescribed gender roles imposed by patriarchal society. This essay explores Jhumpa Lahiri’s literary engagement with the contemporary racialization and gendering of a collective subject described as the Indian diaspora in her Pulitzer Prize winning short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies (1999). Specifically, it focuses on the two stories of “Sexy” and “The Treatment of Bibi Haldar” to analyse the manner dynamics of the gaze operate between the male and female characters. The numerous acts of looking that take place in these stories fall naturally into two major categories: the psychoanalytic look of voyeurism and the historicist gaze of surveillance. Through a rapprochement between the two seemingly different fields of the socius and the psychic, the study concludes that the material and ideological specificities of the stories that formulate a particular group of women as powerless, passive, alien and monstrous are rooted in the contradictory cultural and moral imperatives of the contemporary American society.

Gender representation is significant in every country in South East Asia. In Myanmar, an Asian country, men and women have equal rights under Myanmar customary law, but there is still inequality in some situations. However, gender discrimination is not a prominent social feature; and awareness and understanding of this feature cannot be reached without a course to literary work, which is a reflection of Myanmar culture and Myanmar society. Therefore, to see how gender is represented in Myanmar society, short stories which reflect Myanmar real culture are chosen to be analyzed in this study. That is why, speech acts and some specific linguistic features are investigated and analyzed on the topic of how men and women are represented and portrayed in Myanmar short stories. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are conducted for analyzing the data; descriptive statistical analysis is used for quantitative method and sociolinguistic explanation is presented for qualitative method. Through speech act theory, it is found that there is no difference between males and females in using directives and assertive speech acts. In terms of linguistic features, it is found that reporting verbs, adverbs and adjectives used to portray male characters are described negatively rather than the features used for portraying the female characters. This seems to suggest that males have more negative images than females. Moreover, that the subjects of sentences in the data refer to males more than females is likely to imply that males are leaders and females followers in Myanmar society.

The object of this study is to explore the relationship between 'home' and the decline of ethnic identity in the female characters of Bharati Mukherjee's collection of short stories Darkness (1985). This paper argues that while it is generally accepted that diaspora entails a questioning of a sense of belonging (Kennedy, 2014: 12), for Bharati Mukherjee, "the price that the immigrant willingly pays, and that the exile avoids, is the trauma of self-transformation" ("Two ways to belong in America", 1996). This article seeks to contextualize the Indian diaspora in its roots and routes, proving an inextricable link with gendering of the concept of 'home' in Bhattacharjee (1996). The introduction is underpinned by a theoretical framework on diaspora namely South Asian female migrants in the United States, and an analysis of the Indian concept of nation, from which the literary assessment departs.

The literature of the Philippines shows the European, North American and Asian colonial legacy of the country, hence the diverse and richness of the written works that it contains. These literary pieces could be interpreted in various ways that could help understand how those influences shaped Philippine literature and contributed to the nation’s history and traditions over the years. The study sought to explore the literary works of the Philippines, particularly short stories. Narrative Analysis, specifically Gerard Genette’s theory of Narratology with four analytical categories — narrative mood, narrative instance, narrative levels, and narrative time was used in interpreting the selected 32 short stories from the American to the Contemporary period. After a thorough analysis of the selected pieces, the study was able to determine that predominantly, Filipino writers from the time specified followed a varied manner in the act of narrating, employed a heterodiegetic voice, extradiegetic in its embedded narratives and a fair incorporation of singulative, repetitive and iterative components. Through the analysis, it was found that the narrative mood, instance, time, and level that were found in each literary piece were represented in both distinct and relative manner. The researchers recommend to the administrators in education to utilize studies as means to structure other similar studies to help provide more evaluation and inquiries to the Philippine literary works and for future researchers to produce more credible and generous sources about the interpretation, survey and analysis of the different literary pieces in the Philippines from the previous eras to the Contemporary time.

This article adds to the emergent picture of caste practices among Indian Muslim communities through a focus on caste-based discourses and practices in the contemporary OBC Muslim Chhipa community (OBC, short for ‘Other Backward Class’, is an Indian-government designation). The article examines Muslim Chhipa origin stories, marriage practices and language strategies and shows the ways in which these phenomena—and attitudes about them—allow Muslim Chhipas to articulate and enact strategies of upward mobility and respectability. Central to these strategies is the idea of ‘Islam’, though not in its expected guise as a religion of equality. The article also shows that Islam plays a different but ultimately complementary role in intra-Chhipa relations, allowing for continued caste pride. However, the upward mobility achieved by some suggests that caste practices and beliefs in Muslim communities remain linked to pan-South Asian notions of purity and pollution and, as such, perpetuate discrimination against dalit Muslims.

Mythicity as basis for comparative literature, with reference to water snake symbolism Mythicity can be defined as the deliberate intention of probing the numinous dimensions of human existence by means of literature, i.e. mainly narrative forms. In this article the water snake is chosen as prominent archetypal symbol in order to investigate the functioning of mythicity. The water snake is an important symbol in the Southern African context, with its origins in Khoesan ritual and mythology. Recently several stories about water snakes and related mythological creatures have been published in Afrikaans novels and short stories. The water snake has also assimilated influences, inter alia from European, Asian and other African cultures. In this article the potential of mythicity is specifically investigated insofar as it can be utilised as basis for comparative literature. For this purpose the numinous dimensions of a mythic story are treated as equally important as the narrative dimensions. This dialectical balance is therefore used as the main criterion for the comparison of mythic texts. Other related aspects are discussed, namely the importance of the historical context, Jung’s theory of archetypes and the unconscious, and the role of interpretational devices such as metaphor, metonymy, symbolism and allegory. If the balance between numinosity and narrativity is not maintained, the mythic potential of a text is usually reduced. When writers succeed in utilising mythicity as an “open”, dynamic interpretational process, mythic relevance can still be guaranteed within a present-day, postmodern context.

It investigates the silent crisis literature has been experiencing in the present age of globalisation with its increasing emphasis on STEM subjects in academia and concurrent dismissive attitude towards literature and the humanities as “feckless frills.” With the help of two South Asian short stories – Rabindranath Tagore’s “Kabuliwala” and R.K. Narayan’s “The House Opposite” – the article illustrates how the study of literature helps to create thoughtful, empathetic and imaginative citizens as well as vibrant and sturdy cultures, making it, therefore, imperative for building a healthy, harmonious and symmetrical civilisation. It concludes by advocating that the study of literature not only helps to create a moral centre in an otherwise material culture but can also provide the know-how to participate in and even advance the world of science, business and technology, thereby refuting the fallacy that it is impractical and therefore useless in the modern era.

Uma Parameswaran was born in Madras, India. She studied in Jabalpur and Nagpur, India, and received her PhD from Michigan State University. Today, she is a Professor of English at the University of Winnipeg and is involved in the Indo-Canadian and Women’s communities in Winnipeg. More specifically, her community involvement includes organizing the first series of Indian classical dance instruction (1978–81) and producing a weekly television show (1979-92). She has also participated on various boards and advisory panels, including the Immigrant Women’s Association of Manitoba, the Margaret Laurence Chair of Women Studies and she Chaired a three-year project on Women Focused Research. At present, Parameswaran is involved with the National Council of The Writers’ Union of Canada. Her publications include selections from many genres, including critical essays which explore the work of Salman Rushdie and her own creative contributions such as poetry, short stories, dance-dramas, and the play under study, Rootless but Green are the Boulevard Trees (first published in 1985 in Toronto South Asian Review, Volume 4:1, and subsequently republished as a book in 1987).

Writing bilingual storybooks based on local wisdom is a product of the Prose Appreciation course. The results of the evaluation so far indicate that students' low literacy skills in developing literary works such as short stories, novels, and bilingual folklore books with IT-based ISBN in 8 ethnic groups in North Sumatra. There is also a phenomenon of the influence of globalization from the use of the internet which removes boundaries between countries resulting in the spread of globalization itself which has led to increasing interest among teenagers or students towards modern literary works originating from outside Indonesia such as America, Europe, and from Asian countries. For this reason, this study will be developed to improve st udent literacy competencies through 6 types of Tasks KKNI in making IT-based ISBN-based folklore books for 8 ethnic groups in North Sumatra. Indirectly, this research explores the elements of the existing culture and is also a measure to preserve local culture. This study uses the Classroom Action Research Method (PTK). This activity is carried out through several stages of the process are a. Training in writing folklore literary works based on local wisdom in Taman Budaya. b. Review process by internal reviewers (students (peer review), and lecturers). c.Validation by internal and external expert teams. d. Publishes ISBN books of bilingual folk tales. e. Create a blog about bilingual folklore books.

Bharati Mukherjee was a Calcutta born an Indian American Canadian writer and professor emeriti at the University of California, Berkely. She is one of the promninent and leading Indian women writers in English. Like Kamala Markandaya, Jhumpa Lahiri and Kiran Desai, she is well recognised as a diasporic novelist in the literary arena. She is a representative novelist of Asian immigrants. Her experience as an expatriate in America and Canada forms the main source of her creative writing and literary talents. Her oeuvre comprises novels, short stories, nonfiction prose, socio-political commentaries, journal articles and interviews. The present novel’s title, the character, Jasmine, continually sheds lives to move into other roles. She gets uprooted and re-routed thrice in a new world and establishes a new identity. Jasmine dislocates from Indian traditional conventional life and relocates with modern liberal American life. She is an innocent, diffident woman who has become a fighter, adapter and adventurous in America. Through her novel, Bharati Mukherjee presents Jasmine as a Phoenix who rises from her ashes again and again in the form of different names and characters. She clearly exhibits the life of an Immigrant Indian as well as woman and the obstacles. She needs to break for the transformation of her life in an alien land. The major theme is about Jasmine's love story and the minor one is about her struggle in life. This paper analyses the existential experience of Jasmine in the foreign culture.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the socioeconomic factors that influence the public’s reading interest in specific genres of literature, as well as what the public actually reads or listens to in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Design/methodology/approach A survey of 1,377 households, consisting of 650 and 727 from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, respectively, was conducted in 2012 as part of the country’s first, and to date only, comprehensive Survey of Public Participation in the Arts. A multivariate probit model is applied to analyze factors that influence interest in reading fiction, religion and spirituality and health and fitness. In addition, factors that influence public’s likelihood to read novels, short stories and poems are also assessed. Findings The results indicate that ethnicity, gender and education level significantly influence both the interest in reading, and actual reading habits. For example, while Asian and Western expatriate groups show more interest in fiction and health and fitness literature, Emirati are more likely to read poems. A gender difference is identified with females more likely to read. Research limitations/implications The survey focused on regular dwelling units and within a household, family and resident relatives. Hence, it excludes a segment of residents, such as domestic workers and unauthorized migrants. Originality/value This is the first study to empirically assess the factors influencing the public’s interest and reading habits across a range of genres of literature in the UAE.

This practice report describes a Virtual Exchange (VE), Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) experience (US and Spain) titled Identity Matters: Culture, Ethnicity, and Race in Literature. It describes the formation of students’ individual and communal identities in the virtual literary classroom. The Spanish students were perusing a BA in English Studies, and the American students were studying various Arts and Sciences BA degrees. Both courses were based in American English literature, so this VE course was conducted in English because the Spanish students were required to do their coursework in English. Students read American short stories/poems about the identities of American/American immigrant characters from different racial backgrounds: African American, Indigenous, Asian, and Latinx. The texts portrayed characters dealing with identity crises: racial, ethnic, and types of discrimination in contemporary American society. Students were prompted to discuss their individual identities and, when placed in a group, their communal identities with identity charts, in relation to the characters’ identities and discriminatory experiences. However, although some students discussed race (social/biocultural construct) in their individual charts, racial cognizance was missing in the group charts and they discussed differences in terms of ethnicity (national/cultural: ancestry, language, beliefs). Additionally, because of these results, we believe that intercultural communication in VE should create/provide a space for race cognizance, among international identities, to better understand the different contexts of stereotypes, prejudices, racism, and/or discrimination experiences that make up all identities participating in VE. We therefore suggest Kimberlé Crenshaw’s Intersectionality Theory and Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory are possible building-block solutions to this dilemma.

Meskipun sungai dan sawah menjadi simbol kekuatan sebagai pemberi kehidupan, tetapi keduanya juga merupakan situ perlawanan sebagian besar masyarakat Asia Tenggara, terutama pada masa-masa sulit ketika perempuan sering menjadi korban. Masalah penelitian adalah bagaimana sungai dan sawah serta keterlibatan perempuan ditampilkan pada enam karya yang berlatar di negara-negara dalam kawasan tersebut. Metode analisis konten digunakan dalam penelitian ini dengan perspektif teori ekofeminisme. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya relasi erat antara perempuan dan alam yang direpresentasikan dengan keterlibatan dan kepedulian tokoh perempuan dalam merawat sungai dan sawah. Sebaliknya, tokoh laki-laki digambarkan seolah-olah tidak hirau pada keberadaan alam. Hal ini sekaligus menjadi representasi resistensi terhadap budaya patriarkat yang melakukan dominasi atas perempuan dan alam.(This study aims to explore the similarities and differences in the representation of rivers, rice fields, and disputes in novels and short stories from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Although rivers and rice fields are symbols of strength as life-giving forces, they are also the sites of resistance for most Southeast Asian people, especially in difficult times when women are often victims. The research problem is how rivers, rice fields, and the involvement of women are depicted in six literary works set in the region. Content analysis method is applied in this study using ecofeminist theory as the standpoint. The analysis result shows that a close relationship between women and nature which is represented by the involvement and care of women characters in caring for rivers and rice fields. Conversely, male figures are depicted as if they are not bothered by the existence of nature. This is considered as representation of resistance to patriarchal culture that has dominated women and nature.)

Mark Russell and Steve Pugh’s The Flintstones comic book (2016‐17) addresses US colonialism much more directly than most popular media but focalizes its story through a white, settler American. Thus, it represents an unwillingness and/or inability to think outside of that narrow perspective, i.e. while it is anti-colonial, it is not postcolonial. The book was published through a licensing agreement between Hanna-Barbara and DC Comics in which several Hanna-Barbera cartoons were combined with contrasting genres to create grim and/or mature stories. DC’s The Flintstones, in particular, takes on a collection of social issues, including religion as cynical manipulation, military-industrial propaganda, exploitation of foreign/immigrant labour and media depictions of the environmental crisis. However, it consistently undermines its own messages, often through visual jokes that end up confirming the ideas the book satirizes but also through sincere pronouncements that prevent the satirical critique from reaching a concrete conclusion. The overarching narrative of the series is about the lingering trauma of colonization. It equates the colonization of the land presently held by United States with that country’s war in Vietnam. This equation results from depicting the literal colonization of an Indigenous space and land but using imagery that reflects US media depictions of their war in Vietnam: colonialist soldiers in green fatigues use fire (i.e. napalm) to exterminate racist caricatures of Southeast Asian guerrilla fighters in order to clear a forest and expose the literal bedrock from which the Flinstone’s city will be built. Fred Flintstone, who represents a settler American, states quite directly that he ‘participated in a genocide’ as a soldier in that invasion, thus confirming an anti-colonialist critique. However, the book never takes on the perspective of the colonized peoples, who by then have been wiped out, which is why it stops short of a postcolonialist critique.
