Streszczenie:
The case narrates the story of Asian Paints, an Indian organization operating in the paint industry. Although best practices were an integral part of Asian Paints from its inception, a shared language for all people decisions and processes was felt necessitated. The objective of this case is to highlight Asian Paints management’s need to professionalize the human resource (HR) processes and practices and strategize towards building the leadership pipeline. The case describes Asian Paints’ leadership competency framework (LCF) and examines its purpose of becoming a common language across all HR processes in the organization. This LCF not only addressed the existing business exigencies but also imbibed the culture on which Asian Paints was fabricated, thus, providing shared principles for all employee-related processes. Key people practices at Asian Paints are encapsulated in the competency framework which not only guides its own leaders but also serves as a benchmark for other organizations.

Learning outcomes The case has the following learning objectives: to understand the dilemmas that an emerging market MNC faces during pre-and post-acquisition scenarios; understand and appreciate the basic tensions that arise when two different companies with different cultural setups are integrated; understand the importance of creating a culture integration road map to leverage the synergies of two successful companies; and understand the role of leadership in leading and managing change. Case overview/synopsis Asian Paints Ltd. has been a market leader in the Indian paint market for over five decades (since 1967). Over the years, starting in 1978, the company has steadily spread its footprint in the international arena as well. As of 2017, Asian Paints was a leader in 10 overseas markets, one of the top 3 paint companies in the Middle East, the largest paint manufacturing company in South Asia, and served 60 markets across the world. The international business contributed to around 12% of the company’s group turnover. In line with its long-term vision and to consolidate its presence in emerging markets, the company acquired Causeway Paints, a leading paint company in Sri Lanka, in April 2017. Asian Paints had a presence in Sri Lanka since 1999. Mr. Jatin Upadhyay, International Business Unit Head for Asian Paints, had played significant roles in the past in such acquisitions and was well aware of the impending challenges that came with such acquisitions. How would the integration of the two distinct entities be made possible without losing the overarching objective? How would the transition be managed? How would the cultural transition take place? What and how would the role be handled by the General Manager (GM) of Causeway Lanka? How would the new organisational structure support the transition? The case illustrates the complex management challenges that arise when a leading enterprise from a different country (Asian Paints) acquires a leading company in a different country, in this case, Causeway Paints, Sri Lanka. Complexity academic level The target audience for this case study is the students pursuing a post-graduate programme in management or an executive post-graduate programme in management. The case can also be used for management development programmes for experienced participants who are interested in understanding the possible scenarios that may arise after an acquisition when managing an international subsidiary in a different cultural setting. Streszczenie:
Earlier when houses were built or renovated, consumers did not give much attention to the paints used. Painting was never given as much importance when decisions were made regarding a house construction, but over the years due to the increase in competition, growth in infrastructure, consumer awareness about beauty, ambience and upkeep of their building, the consumer has become aware about the importance of buying best paints. People have started given a lot of importance to make their homes look beautiful and aesthetic. Initially the decision to buy paints depended up on the contractor or the construction firm but now it has slowly become part of the final user’s decision. With government assistance for the building and infrastructure sector, the industry is expected to grow at a rapid pace over the next five years, with enormous growth potential. This study talks about various paint brands with a focus on customers preferences, needs, wants and the factors that affects their decision while buying paints. This study also proves an already proven fact that Asian paint is the largest and most trusted paint brand in India. The study aims to determine how a company's efforts should be channeled and how they should formulate their future strategies according to the consumer preferences. The study also shows the impact of how a company's branding exercise and marketing strategies affects a consumer’s purchasing decisions towards paints. The aim of this research is to investigate the long-run co-integrating relationships in the Asian markets. Our research focuses on 4 areas; pair trading, out-of-sample forecasting, testing the unbiased forward exchange rate hypothesis and testing the expectation hypothesis of the term structure of interest rates. The introduction is provided in chapter one. In chapter two, we develop a pairs trading strategy using individual stocks listed in the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Engle and Granger approach is used to identify the potential pairs that are cointegrated. The results show that pairs trading strategy is profitable in this market. Chapter three examines the forecasting performance of the error correction model on daily share price series from the Stock Exchange of Thailand. The disequilibrium term is classified into “correct” and “mix” sign based on Alexander (2008)’s criterion; the results indicate that the error correction component can help to improve the predictability in the long run. Chapter four tests the unbiased forward rate hypothesis of 11 Asian exchange rates using linear conventional regression, ECM and logistic smooth transition regression with the forward premium as the transition variable. Out-of-sample forecasting results also suggest that inferior forecasting performance could be obtained as a result of using linear models. In chapter five, we investigate the expectation hypothesis of the term structure of interest rate for four Asian countries. We employ linear models and nonlinear approaches that allow to capture asymmetric and symmetric adjustments. The result also indicates that the term structure can be better modeled by means of LSTR models. The forecasting exercise also confirms these findings.

Streszczenie:
Background InVietnam, the proportion of people aged 60 and above has increased rapidly in recent decades. The majority live in rural areas where socioeconomic status is more disadvantaged than in urban areas.Vietnam’s economic status is improving but disparities in income and living conditions are widening between groups and regions. A consistent and emerging danger of communicable diseases and an increase of non-communicable diseases exist concurrently. The emigration of young people and the impact of other socioeconomic changes leave more elderly on their own and with less family support. Introduction of user fees and development of a private sector improve the coverage and quality of health care but increase household health expenditures and inequalities in health care. Life expectancy at birth has increased, but not much is known about changes during old age. There is a lack of evidence, particularly in rural settings, about health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among older people within the context of socioeconomic changes and health-sector reform. Knowledge of long-term elderly care needs in the community and the relevant models are still limited. To provide evidence for developing new policies and models of care, this thesis aimed to assess general health status, health care needs, and perspectives on future health care options for community-dwelling older people. Methods An abridged life table was used to estimate cohort life expectancies at old age from longitudinal data collected by FilaBavi DSS during 1999-2006. This covered 7,668 people aged 60 and above with 43,272 person-years. A 2007 cross-sectional survey was conducted among people aged 60 and over living in 2,240 households that were randomly selected from the FilaBavi DSS. Interviews used a structured questionnaire to assess HRQoL, daily care needs, and willingness to use and to pay for models of care. Participant and household socioeconomic characteristics were extracted from the 2007 DSS re-census. Differences in life expectancy are examined by socioeconomic factors. The EQ-5D index is calculated based on the time trade-off tariff. Distributions of study subjects by study variables are described with 95% confidence intervals. Multivariate analyses are performed to identify socioeconomic determinants of HRQoL, need of support, ADL index, and willingness to use and pay for models of care. In addition, four focus group discussions with the elderly, their household members, and community association representatives were conducted to explore perspectives on the use of services by applying content analysis. Results Life expectancy at age 60 increased by approximately one year from 1999-2002 to 2003-2006, but tended to decrease in the most vulnerable groups. There is a wide gap in life expectancy by poverty status and living arrangement. The sex gap in life expectancy is consistent across all socioeconomic groups and is wider among the more disadvantaged populations.  The EQ-5D index at old age is 0.876. Younger age groups, position as household head, working, literacy, and belonging to better wealth quintiles are determinants of higher HRQoL. Ageing has a primary influence on HRQoL that is mainly due to reduction in physical (rather than mental) functions. Being a household head and working at old age are advantageous for attaining better HRQoL in physical rather than psychological terms. Economic conditions affect HRQoL through sensory rather than physical functions. Long-term living conditions are more likely to affect HRQoL than short-term economic conditions. Dependence in instrumental or intellectual activities of daily living (ADLs) is more common than in basic ADLs. People who need complete help are fewer than those who need some help in almost all ADLs. Over two-fifths of people who needed help received enough support in all ADL dimensions. Children and grand-children are confirmed to be the main caregivers. Presence of chronic illness, age groups, sex, educational level, marital status, household membership, working status, household size, living arrangement, residential area, household wealth, and poverty status are determinants of the need for care. Use of mobile teams is the most requested service; the fewest respondents intend to use a nursing centre. Households expect to use services for their elderly to a greater extent than did the elderly themselves. Willingness to use services decreases when potential fees increase. The proportion of respondents who require free services is 2 to 3 times higher than those willing to pay full cost. Households are willing to pay more for day care and nursing centres than are the elderly. The elderly are more willing to pay for mobile teams than are their households. ADL index, age group, sex, literacy, marital status, living arrangement, head of household status, living area, working status, poverty and household wealth are factors related to willingness to use services.   Conclusions                                                                                         There is a trend of increasing life expectancy at older ages in ruralVietnam. Inequalities in life expectancy exist between socioeconomic groups. HRQoL at old age is at a high level, but varies substantially according to socioeconomic factors. An unmet need of daily care for older people remains. Family is the main source of support for care. Need for care is in more demand among disadvantaged groups.  Development of a social network for community-based long-term elderly care is needed. The network should focus on instrumental and intellectual ADLs rather than basic ADLs. Home-based care is more essential than institutionalized care. Community-based elderly care will be used and partly paid for if it is provided by the government or associations. The determinants of elderly health and care needs should be addressed by appropriate social and health policies with greater targeting of the poorest and most disadvantaged groups. Building capacity for health professionals and informal caregivers, as well as support for the most vulnerable elderly groups, is essential for providing and assessing the services.

Alien species are considered one of the main factors threatening global biodiversity and causing extinction. Many countries have initiated to address the impacts of alien species on the environments, ecosystems, economy, and human welfare, and to search strategies to regulate populations of invasive species and to reduce their impacts. The Asian Painted Frog, Kaloula pulchra Gray 1831, is distributed mainly in the Southeast Asia. The invasion of Asian Painted Frogs was first reported in 1998, and since then they have established populations in southern Taiwan, including Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung County. This study investigated Asian Painted Frogs in Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park between 2010 and 2011. I used capture-mark-recapture method and Jolly-Seber full model to estimate the size of their population in the park. I also examined the effects of environmental factors, including daily mean temperature, relative humidity, daily precipitation, 3-day accumulated precipitation, 7-day accumulated precipitation, and the level of global solar radiation on the population size. In addition, I manipulated population parameters to model the dynamics of population size for over a period of 10 years, and suggested recommended removal strategies based on the results. In Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park, the breeding season of Asian Painted Frogs spanned from April to September, but the most intensive reproductive activity occurred in mid-April to June. The size of their population was positively correlated with daily precipitation and relative humidity, but negatively correlated with the daily mean temperature and the level of global solar radiation. I divided the life cycle of Asian Painted Frogs to two main stages: (1) pre-adult stage, including eggs, tadpoles, and juveniles; and (2) adult stage which was composed of mature individuals only. I used population projection matrix to model the dynamics of population size over 10 years. Given the assumptions of a negligible predation and below the carrying capacity, the population size was estimated to burst up to 11600 in the park, if no proper control or management strategies were practiced. Focusing on either eggs and tadpoles, or only juveniles and adults, however, required removing over 60% to stop the population growth. The encounter rate of only 31.8% generated from AIC (Akaike’s Information Criterion) indicated that it was not possible to remove 60% of juveniles and adults in the field. The model prediction suggested that removing lesser than 30% of juveniles and adults together with eggs and tadpoles (Scenario D1~D3) resulted in the fittest removal strategy. In conclusion, controlling juvenile and adult Asian Panted Frogs demanded a larger proportion of efforts. If the management or control plans could cover all the breeding sites or properly interfere with female egg-laying, it would increase the efficiency of population control. Managing potential breeding sites effectively should be the first priority to control the populations of Asian Painted Frogs.

Tan, Noel Hidalgo. "Painted Sites, Sacred Sites: An examination of religious syncretism in Southeast Asia through rock art site usage vols. 1 and 2". Phd thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/204429.

Streszczenie:
Southeast Asian religions have often been described as syncretic, highlighting the mixture of Hinduism, Buddhism and indigenous animism and supernaturalism. However, syncretism is difficult to detect in the archaeological record. In this study, I investigate a phenomenon in Mainland Southeast Asia where prehistoric rock art sites later transform into religious shrines. Rock art has often been linked to ritual activity, and together with many forms of religious activity are non-utilitarian acts that result in ascribing significance to the landscape. The lasting effect on place can thus be used as an analogue for syncretism that can be detected archaeologically. Seven sites in Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos—countries which are now predominantly Theravada Buddhist—were selected. Using a biographical approach, I reconstructed the life history of these sites, paying special attention to recording the rock art and the different forms of material culture present. The elements related to Buddhism, Hinduism and animism were determined, as well as their relationship to each other. The development of the studied sites can be characterised as gradual or abrupt. Gradual sites have many layers of added meaning in their respective histories that illustrate the transformation of the rock art site over time. The sites of Poueng Komnou (Cambodia), Wat Porta, Wat Phra Phuttabat Bua Ban (Thailand) and the Pak Ou Caves (Laos) show long-standing religious significance assigned by the Indic religions from the second millennium CE, with supplementary evidence suggesting they were significant before the arrival of Hinduism and Buddhism. Supplication to indigenous spirit cults can also be detected at these sites through ethnographic accounts. The abrupt sites of Poueng Takhab (Cambodia), Khao Chan Ngam (Thailand) and the Padalin Caves (Myanmar) show only two layers of occupation: the prehistoric rock art period, and the present religious use. This characteristic is consistent with anthropological observations that the creation and disuse of sacred sites in Southeast Asia can be very rapid. These findings are consistent with the notion of the landscape as an anthropogenic construct rather than an environmental feature. All the sites investigated appear to be excellent places of congregation or habitation. Human transformation of the site, represented by marking with rock art, may have highlighted the delimitation of the controlled space between humans and supernatural spirits—a worldview that is commonly held in Southeast Asia. The introduction of Indic religions and the subsequent dominance of Buddhism endorsed this worldview by putting the Buddha as the chief of the supernatural world. Much attention has been paid to Hindu and Buddhist religious remains, but few indigenous religious materials have been identified archaeologically. Identification of non-Indic religions is exarcerbated because indigenous spirit markers are made from more perishable materials such as wood and cloth, and because Hindu and Buddhist remains themselves can be re-appropriated for nature spirit worship. This conception of spirit world, acknowledged in the different types of material remains found at these rock art sites, suggests an archaeological blind spot in the identification of non-Indic religions in Southeast Asian archaeology.

Streszczenie:
AbstractMartial arts are cultural phenomena shaped by the societies in which they develop. They were—and still are—transmitted through interpersonal exchanges, from body to body. Martial arts experts use speech for devising these martial skills into complex systems of bodily knowledge. Once the systems are complex or vast enough to be verbalized, they are transmitted through bodies and speech with mnemotechnical texts such as poems, codified knowledge canons or a constellation of technical words associated with metaphors or images. Some of these mantras (mnemonic devices) found their way into writing or depiction. This process is a translation (transcription) from speech to the page, or to depiction. The written word or the depiction of bodies fighting on a wall, a painted canvas, or embedded into a sculpture, endures through time and survives the masters who created them. However, in most cases, those who wrote the words painted the images, or sculpted the stone were not the martial art experts themselves. The documents, depictions, and sculptures preserved for the study of martial arts culture of the past must be explored while taking into account the perspective of those who created them. Based on previous research about the circulation of knowledge based on the dissemination of European fight books, this contribution allows for a new approach to categorization of martial arts knowledge, on and beyond the page, with a focus on early modern fight books.

Streszczenie:
The main objective of this research is to estimate whether portfolio diversification is feasible in the financial markets of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand (ASEAN-5), and the market of China, in the context of the stock market crash in China in 2015. The purpose is to answer two questions, namely whether: (i) has the stock market crash in China increased financial integration in the ASEAN-5 financial markets and China? (ii) If the presence of long memories may put in question the diversification of portfolios? The results suggest that these markets are segmented, except for Malaysia/Singapore, bi-directional, and China/Filipinas, pre-crash. However, when analysing the stock market crash period, the results indicate 16 integrated market pairs with structure breakdown (in 30 possible). When compared with the previous sub-period it was found that during the stock market crash the level of financial integration increased significantly (533%). In the post-crash period, there were right integrated market pairs with broken structure. When compared to the crash period, the level of integration decreased in 50%. In addition, we observed that during the stock market crash these Asian markets did not have long memories, except for the Malaysian market, which reveals some predictability, that is, the increase in integration does not lead to persistence in these Asian markets. In conclusion, the ASEAN-5 markets and China mostly exhibit strong signs of efficiency in their weak form. The authors consider that the implementation of portfolio diversification strategies is beneficial for investors. These conclusions also open space for market regulators to take action to ensure better information between these regional markets and international markets.
