Over the past 23 years, the Togliatti Museum of Local Lore has developed two projects of intergenerational family communication (value exchange between generations, to restore the intergenerational connection broken in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods). In the first case, adolescents and a family encounter trauma (realistically and indirectly, through a teenager who asks the family and about the family questions (the Family Alphabets project); in the second, preschoolers and families (conventionally, grandmothers and grandchildren: 20th century). This is an integrative course at the intersection of museum pedagogy, psychology, records management, uses the documentary heritage of the territory (rare books and documents of the museum and family archive), the intangible heritage of the family.

The article first published the correspondence of Oksana Semenivna Sklyarenko, the daughter of the famous Ukrainian (Soviet) fiction writer Semyon Dmytrovych Sklyarenko, to local historian Mykhailo Fedorovych Ponomarenko, the founder of local history in Cherkasy region. Also, the scientific novelty of this study is due to the fact that no fundamental study of the epistolary legacy of S. D. Sklyarenko has been carried out in modern Ukrainian historiography. Thus, this correspondence will allow solving the problem of expanding the source base of the study of the writer's biography. At the same time, the correspondence reflects the relationship of the local historian with the writer's family and his environment. The contribution of M. F. was characterized Ponomarenka in preserving the memory of S. D. Sklyarenko and popularizing his work in Zolotonyshchyna. Based on a brief overview of the fund of S. D. Sklyarenko (No. 467) from the Central State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine and archival materials collected by local historian M. F. Ponomarenko from the fund (5428) of the State Archive of the Cherkasy Region, this publication highlights the documents, which will complement the scientist's biography. In the process of analyzing this correspondence, it was found that M. F. Ponomarenko was engaged in collecting materials for the writer's personal exhibition in the Zolotony Museum of Local History and actively published local history articles about S. D. Sklyarenko in the regional periodical press. At the same time, the letters contain information about the professional activities of O.S. Sklyarenko and her family. In the process of developing the topic, biographical and chronological methods of historical research and the general scientific method of system analysis were used. The archeographic method of source research was also applied.

The life story of these personalities, residents of the legendary Niernsee House in Bolshoy Gnezdnikovsky Lane, enables the authors, who are related to L. Ever since Star Wars became a franchise -- immediately after the release of A New Hope - -there have been a wide variety of efforts to structure, explain, and systematize its ever-expanding narrative universe. Going under various names, including the "Extended Universe," the Star Wars franchise beyond the core films has always been somewhat contentious, both as markers of fan knowledge and as potential for nearly endless corporate profit. What was originally kept in a vast archive of narrative data at Lucasfilm led to a hierarchy of canons and canonicity, which was distributed back to fans via elaborate reference books and contained within Star Wars plots as holocrons kept as lore in Jedi and Sith temples. This paper examines the fate of that canonicity in the wake of the 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm by Disney, exploring how various aspects of these already commodified franchise elements have been contained and redeployed as Disney both continued the Skywalker saga of films and elaborated the Star Wars franchise in new ways.

Chronicle data and the creative heritage of Alash figures, as well as archival materials of the Semipalatinsk Museum of Local Lore and the archive fund of East Kazakhstan Region (now Abai region) were used as the object of research. Historical data and narrative data were analyzed on the basis of mutual historical-comparative and comparative approaches to research, evidence of hypothetical conclusions was revealed by the method of biographical parallel and content analysis (quantitative, qualitative). As a result of the study, it was determined that the main cause of various movements and uprisings, considered colonial policy and the struggle for independence, is the struggle for the idea, and the definition of the idea of Alash is given. In addition, methods of underground, secret or disguised ideological work against the censorship mechanism, which tightly controlled the propaganda work of the idea of Alash, were revealed.

The article presents a review of Russian archival funds related to the protection of historical and cultural heritage and the activities of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments (hereinafter VOOPIK, or the Society). The study is based on materials from various state organizations, including the State Ar-chive of the Russian Federation (GARF), the Perm State Archive of Socio-Political History (PermGASPI), the State Archive of the Perm Krai (GAPK), the Center for Documentation of Public Organizations of the Sverdlovsk Oblast (CDOOSO), the United State Archive of the Chelyabinsk Oblast (OGACHO), and the Perm Museum of Local Lore (PKM). The relevance of the study lies in the growing interest of the state, academia and society in both grassroots activism and mass voluntary organizations in the late Soviet Union. The Soviet experience is particularly valuable as many of its initiatives are being revisited in contemporary Russian reality. The main basis for Soviet studies are ar-chival sources, which are regularly introduced into academic circulation. The aim of the article is to study and classi-fy archival sources on the above topic. In addition to the review, the article provides a brief historiographical over-view of the problem's research status, as well as a historical note on the activities of the VOOPIK. The author identi-fies several types of sources in archival funds and provides a brief description of each. An important role in studying the activity of Soviet mass organizations is played by the determination of the levels of research – from the republi-can (RSFSR) to regional (oblast, krai, ASSR) and grassroots (district, city) levels. This division justifies the use of both central and regional archives, as the archival sources from Central Archive (GARF) provide an understanding of the specifics of the functioning of the central apparatus of the VOOPIK, while the sources of regional archives recre-ate a picture of activism on “grassroots level” where the main productive activities of the Society took place. When using archives of different levels, one can change the optics of research and study VOOPIK from different angles. The study pays particular attention to the “Letters to VOOPIK” written by Soviet citizens to authorities, media, and voluntary organizations regarding the protection of historical and cultural heritage. These letters, which were a com-mon practice in Soviet everyday life, can shed light on the motives and goals of the activists.

Although many Americans think of Jackie Robinson when they consider the story of race and racism in baseball, a long history of tragedies and triumphs precede Robinson’s momentous debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. From the pioneering Cuban Giants (1885-1915) to the Negro Leagues (1920-1960), black baseball was a long-standing, if underdocumented, staple of African American communities. This book examines creative portraits of this history by William Brashler, Jerome Charyn, August Wilson, Gloria Naylor, Harmony Holiday, Kadir Nelson, and Denzel Washington, among others. Divided into three literary waves, the book is especially attentive to the archival contributions (and at times drawbacks) of imaginative representations of black baseball. Specifically, the book argues that African American and Euro-American novelists, playwrights, poets, and filmmakers fill in gaps and silences in recorded baseball history; democratize access to archives by sharing their research with readers; and advance countermythologies to whitewashed baseball lore. Reading representations across the literary color line also opens up a propitious space for exploring black cultural pride and residual frustrations with racial hypocrisies on the one hand and the benefits and limitations of white empathy on the other. Thus, while this book’s particular focus is black baseball, the comparative, archival mode of analysis utilized herein provides a model for analyzing literary interventions in other marginalized cultural histories as well.

In 1295, a house fell from the evening sky onto an Italian coastal road by the Adriatic Sea. Inside, awestruck locals encountered the Virgin Mary, who explained that this humble mud-brick structure was her original residence newly arrived from Nazareth. To keep it from the hands of Muslim invaders, angels had flown it to Loreto, stopping three times along the way. This story of the house of Loreto has been read as an allegory of how Catholicism spread peacefully around the world by dropping miraculously from the heavens. This book calls that interpretation into question by examining historical accounts of the movement of the Holy House across the Mediterranean in the thirteenth century and the Atlantic in the seventeenth century. These records indicate vast and voluntary involvement in the project of formulating a branch of Catholic devotion. The book surveys the efforts of European Jesuits, Slavic migrants, and indigenous peoples in Baja California, Canada, and Peru. These individuals contributed to the expansion of Catholicism by acting as unofficial authors, inadvertent pilgrims, unlicensed architects, unacknowledged artists, and unsolicited cataloguers of Loreto. Their participation in portaging Mary's house challenges traditional views of Christianity as a prepackaged European export, and instead suggests that Christianity is the cumulative product of thousands of self-appointed editors. The book also demonstrates how miracle narratives can be treated seriously as historical sources that preserve traces of real events. Drawing on rich archival materials, the book illustrates how global Catholicism proliferated through independent initiatives of untrained laymen.

Diva Nation explores the constructed nature of female iconicity. From ancient goddesses and queens to modern singers and writers, each chapter critically reconsiders the female icon, tracing how she has been offered up for emulation, debate, or censure. Diva Nation stems from our curiosity over the insistent presence of female figures who refuse to sit quietly on the sidelines of history but have not been admitted into mainstream scholarship or routine knowledge. Our case studies move beyond archival portraits to consider historically and culturally informed diva imagery and diva lore. We ask how the diva disrupts or bolsters ideas about nationhood, morality, and aesthetics. She is ripe for expansion, fantasy, eroticization, and playful reinvention, yet her unavoidability also makes her a special problem for patriarchal culture. Charting the waxing and waning of the diva story helps illuminate national narratives and assists us in understanding the ways the nation is imbricated with notions of gender, nostalgia, and identity politics.

The book recounts for the first time the 400-year history of oasts and hop kilns, vernacular farm buildings uses for drying hops. They are found in three regions of England: Kent and Sussex, Hampshire and Farnham, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. The evolution of the kilns, the drying methods and the machinery used is pieced together from surviving buildings, agricultural books, archives and local lore. 250 diagrams, sketches and photographs present a graphic picture of hop drying and the impact of oasts and kilns on the countryside. Hop growing expanded to meet the demands of Industrial Revolution Britain, its army and navy. The commercial and political drama of hop farming, drying and marketing is present in the book. Fortunes were made and lost. Gambling and dodgy dealing on hops and taxes was common. No crop was more volatile than hops. Political battles over tariffs and free trade are reported. The hop drying buildings in continental Europe – notably Flanders, Alsace, Bavaria and the Czech Republic- and in parts of the USA are described. They demonstrate that hop drying buildings in England were unmatched in the 17th-19th centuries, but that in the 20th century modern drying machinery in the USA and Germany left England behind.

As the United States moves toward a majority-minority country, candidates for public office must increasingly make appeals to voters from a range of racial and ethnic backgrounds. In 2008, Barack Obama did this to maximum effect with white voters across the U.S. Most recently, in 2018, Beto O’Rourke nearly became the first Democratic senator from Texas since the 1990s. O’Rourke, who grew up in El Paso, speaks Spanish and is extremely knowledgeable about border issues and immigration policy more generally, which translated into strong support and turnout among Latino voters. In Campaigning in a Racially Diversifying America: When and How Cross-Racial Electoral Mobilization Works, Loren Collingwood examines the specific case of how and when white/Anglo candidates mobilize Latino voters, and why some candidates are successful whereas others are not. Drawing on extensive data collection, statistical analysis, and archival evidence, Collingwood traces the development of cross-racial mobilization across the U.S. South and the Southwest since the 1940s. Extensive cross-racial mobilization is most likely to occur when elections are competitive, institutional barriers to the vote are low, candidates have previously developed a welcoming racial reputation with target voters, whites’ attitudes are racially liberal, and the Latino electorate is large and growing. Collingwood convincingly argues—and empirically demonstrates—that to maximize the vote across the racial aisle, white/Anglo candidates must develop minority-group cultural competence and group-specific policy expertise. With these qualities, and maximum efforts at cross-racial mobilization, non-co-ethnic candidates can begin to approach the electoral benefits previously thought only accrued to co-ethnic candidates.

Abstract Chapter 6 analyses the Tana Bhagats’ relationship with the Congress, their perception of ‘Gandhi Baba’, his charkha and swaraj. Drawing particularly on the missionary archive, it looks at the workings of Congress propaganda at the local level, and the myths, rumours, and lore that grew around the person of Gandhi. Congress ‘nationalists’, this chapter argues, adapted their politics to local conditions, refiguring thereby their slogans in locally cognizable terms; local elements, more aware of the Tana cultural world, adopted a different mode of propaganda to popularize their messages in Gandhi’s name; Tana leaders and their bhagat followers, as they spoke in the name of Gandhi, interpreted these open-ended messages in many ways, but often continued with their earlier modes of protest.

As it is already common lore in the history of mathematics education, Hans Freudenthal had been invited to participate at the Seminar on New Thinking in School Mathematics, held in Royaumont in 1959, organised by the OEEC (later renamed OECD), but had rejected the invitation – and that he regretted later on this refusal as a great error, assuming he might have impeded the worst of what he then thought to be a wrong way for modernisation (de Bock & Vanpaemel 2019, p. 75). La Bastide-van Gemert was already able to shading and differentiating this common lore, by researching in Freudenthal’s Nachlass (La Bastide-van Gemert 2015). The focus of her analysis was to study Freudenthal’s individual acting regarding the invitation. As I had shown in my research upon this Seminar, which in fact launched the modern math movement internationally, the archive of the OECD had no longer documents of the preparatory stages of the Seminar; all that had been simply littered (Schubring 2014). Not only Freudenthal’s correspondence with the OEEC staff, but also a number of documents he received during the preparatory stages of the Seminar enable, however, to reconstruct somewhat the preparations by the OEEC and by a “group of experts”, which should assist them in elaborating the programme. These documents allow not only to understand the concretisation of the conceptions for the Seminar, but also to remark that Freudenthal’s participation in the preparatory changes had instigated effects upon the Seminar conceptions. This contribution analyses these developments and elaborations. As a major surprise, one of the key elements of the lore is shown to be wrong. In a last section, I will report on my searches for information about the three West-German Seminar participants: Hermann Athen, Otto Botsch and Heinz Schöne.

This chapter analyzes two stars’ biopics from the 1950s: Carlos Velo’s Torero! on bullfighter Luis Procuna and Sophia: Her Own Story (1980) featuring the famous Loren playing herself and her mother in a TV biopic. The chapter analyzes the constraints posed to celebrity self-reenactment: how different temporal orders: of biology (the star’s aging body), the recurrent circuitry of star iconography, and the flexible order of aesthetic representation balance precariously in these narratives. Taking the cue from André Bazin’s analysis on bullfighting and death in the cinema, this chapter analyzes the specific roles of archival footage and of reenactment in star biopics. In particular, it looks at how reenactment’s temporal indeterminacy contrasts with documentary images of bullfights. The chapter situates Velo’s work within Mexican experiments with ciné-verdad as well as Zavattini’s international influence in these efforts in 1950s Mexico.

Abstract The rise of comparative philology in the eighteenth century had created a new way of triangulating the relationship between race, language, and history. Language, in this framework, was understood mainly as grammar. At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Bengali physicist and polymath, Ramendrasundar Tribedi, sought to rework this relationship by reimagining language as a sonic archive. His complex framework, which I call a somatomimetic alphabetics, sought to recover a non-elite and racially hybrid history of language through its sounds. Moreover, he intended this history to then guide the development of future scientific terminology in Bengali. Tribedi’s Byzantine new formulation braided together physical theories of sound developed by scientists like Helmholtz with Vaishnava lore and Sanskrit language pedagogy. But, crucially, it was also informed by his own intimacy with the world of classical Hindustani music and a political commitment to a cosmopolitan, open-ended form of nationalism.

The introduction describes how we define and think about the diva in this volume. We discuss the way divas systematically draw our attention to the performative nature of identity, to gender, and to battles over control of female bodies and female sexuality. We want our case studies to move beyond archival portraits to consider historically and culturally informed diva imagery and diva lore. From ancient goddesses and queens to modern singers and writers, we note that each chapter critically reconsiders the female icon, tracing how she has been offered up for emulation, debate, or censure. We ask how the diva disrupts or bolsters ideas about nationhood, morality, and aesthetics. She is ripe for expansion, fantasy, eroticization, and playful reinvention, yet her unavoidability also makes her a special problem for patriarchal culture.

Abstract January snow blanketed northern Nevada as we prepared for a fourth field season. Despite sunny blue skies, high temperatures hovered near 20°F. We visited physicians, dentists, and accountants, and each day stacked supplies in our living room. We also bought last-minute items for Namibian friends-gun parts, a camera, a day pack and tent for Archie, a book on elephant lore for Malan. But there was still no one to housesit or care for the dogs. Airlines in the United States, Europe, and South Africa had yet to decide on charges for our excess baggage. Even getting to Los Angeles International Airport would be difficult because of the massive freeway destruction from the devastating earthquake only a week earlier. One thing kept worrying us-the six-month silence from Namibian officials.

This chapter describes the POEMobile, an art truck with brightly painted iron wings arching above its roof and poems in two dozen languages emblazoned on its sides. Jointly sponsored by Bowery Arts + Science and City Lore, the truck projects poems onto walls and buildings, combining live poetry readings and musical performances in neighborhoods throughout New York. As poets perform in their native languages on the street or plaza, a beam of light soars past them and the words float in light above their heads, often several stories high. The projections open with an animated feathered wing brushing words onto the building, an idea inspired by a Martin Espada line: “God must be an owl, electricity coursing through the hollow bones, a white wing brushing the building.” The door of the POEMobile is inscribed with lines of poetry in some of the world's endangered languages.

The aim of our study is the description and initial systematization of the texts about saints in the Russian collection of the ELM folklore archive labeled ERA Vene – the records from the 1920s-40s, created by the ELM collectors belonging to the Russian population of Estonia. Among the texts about saints in the Russian collection of the ELM archive we can find fairy tales (magical and legendary), spiritual and ethical legends, lore (stories about local landscape features, natural and cultural objects), bylichkas (mythological stories), stories about miracles (legends-bylichkas), legendary stories about help and punishment from saints. Thus, texts about saints in the Russian archive can be divided into 2 large groups: 1) narrative texts, i.e. texts that tell a story; 2) discursive texts-descriptions of beliefs, customs, perceptions. The most frequent protagonists of the texts of different genres and beliefs are such saints as St. Nicholas of Myra (commonly known as Nicholas the Wonderworker or Saint Nicholas), the Great Martyr George the Victory-bearer (known among Estonian Russians as Yegoriy), the Old Testament prophet Elijah (Elijah the Prophet), the Venerable John Cassian the Roman (popularly known as Kasyan the Merciful). Russians of Estonia also knew local saints or saints of the nearby lands - St. John Archbishop of Novgorod (12th century), Monk Makariy Roman of Novgorod (late 15th - early 16th centuries), Monk-martyr Korniliy of Pskov-Pechersk, Monk Nikandr of Pskov (16th century), Izborsk righteous man Matvey the Miserable (early 20th century). The list of all the saints is quite extensive: Archistratigus Michael, King Solomon, John the Forerunner and the Baptist, Apostle Andrew the First-Called, Venerable Sergius of Radonezh, Great Martyr and Healer Pantheliimon, Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday, Martyrs Kirik and Julita, Hymenless and Wonderworkers Cosmas and Domian, Martyrs Florus and Laurus, Great Martyr Anastasia of Sirmium, Monks Savvatiy and Zosima of Solovtsy, Holy Martyr Antipas of Pergamon, etc. At the same time, King Solomon is a protagonist of fairy tales, in one tale the main character is Andrew the First Called, the other saints are mentioned in connection with the beliefs about what needs they help with, what prayers are addressed to them, what holidays and how they are celebrated. In many cases, the customs coincide with those of the Seto ethnic group living in the same area, and there are similarities with the Latvians living in the Ludza region, and Belarusians. The texts combine the elements of the Christian canonical, apocryphal, and folkloric traditions. This philosophy includes various etiological (including cosmological), eschatological, ethno-confessional perceptions, a set of ethical norms, the most important components of which are notions of good and evil, sin and miracle. As for the veneration of St. Nicholas, according to the ELM archive, he was considered a „universal“ helper with all the problems of life, while other saints had their own particular «specialization». At the same time the popular saint Kasyan, nicknaed «the Unmerciful» had nothing in common with his canonical prototype, Saint John Kasyan the Roman, a Christian monk and theologian, the founder of monasticism in Gaul, and a theorist of monastic life. Thus, the texts of the Russian ELM archive on saints constitute a unique collection that is a reflection of the peasant worldview peculiar to the 1920s and 1940s.

Streszczenie:
In this chapter, Hilliard examines the 2018-2019 West Virginia teachers’ strike from a folkloric perspective, revealing how the application of expressive culture as a form of resistance was employed by public school teachers as they organized online and in physical spaces, communicating through attire, signs, food, chants, songs, and digital memes the importance of their care work in sustaining the everyday life of their communities. The way expressive and largely ephemeral culture of the labor struggle was evolving and being performed in real time demonstrates the importance of public folklore institutions as entities well-positioned to document these types of actions—which disrupt everyday life in order to sustain it—as they unfold. To witness the teachers’ strike as it evolved was to experience the visionary possibilities of expressive culture and its ability to bolster group identity and forge a new reality in resistance to dominant power structures. This chapter takes up the tradition of occupational folklife or “labor lore” championed by folklorists Archie Green, George Korson, and Jim Leary, among others.
