Streszczenie:
Central courtyards emerged in many civilizations of the world. Cyprus was no exception as courtyards formed important architectural features throughout the centuries in the residential architecture of the island. The erection of dwellings attached to each other, the need for a private outdoor protected space due to the introverted character of societies, as well as the climatic conditions, i.e. warm Mediterranean climate, led to a widespread use of the courtyard in nearly all traditional residences of the island in the last two centuries. Apart from vernacular architecture, courtyards appeared in earlier historic periods and, in some cases, they were found to be used in the residential architecture of more recent decades. This paper presents an analytical study of the social and environmental aspects of courtyards in the vernacular dwellings of Cyprus. The research underlines the role of the courtyard as an important social gathering area, as well as a microclimate regulator in the residences. Moreover, it highlights its bioclimatic significance in enhancing the integration of nature's elements into the design and overall architectural concept of the dwelling.

Vernacular architecture clearly expresses the strong relationship between man and his surrounding environment, as it represented a mirror reflected the material and human requirements and components of the environment that corresponds to it. From the standpoint of vernacular architecture which is compatible with the environment came as a contemporary innate expression of the reality of place and time, we are trying in this paper to come up with a clear definition of vernacular architecture and the features that characterized it as an attempt to add the human touch to modern architecture, and this is done by studying the vernacular architecture of and analyzing factors Influencing its urban formation, then exposure to the vernacular design of residential buildings and the extent of their environmental and cultural compatibility. The paper concludes with analysis, deduction and evidence that vernacular architecture produces a distinctive local character whose built environment is compatible with local nature and cultures and this is what supports the individual's sense of belonging, as it is man's success in adapting to his environment that enables humanity to communicate and continue. Purpose of the study ▪ Determining the features and characteristics of vernacular architecture by analyzing an architectural example of an Egyptian village with a vernacular architectural character ▪ Study the extent to which vernacular architecture is compatible with the environment as an aspect of the natural aspects and the human aspect such as customs, traditions and religion ▪ Emphasize the importance of preserving vernacular housing as it is considered a local heritage ▪ Take advantage of the Vernacular architecture method in dealing with humans and the environment in designing our modern architecture and using technology

In architecture, Venustas (aesthetics) is always considered an important attribute along with Firmitas (firmness) and Utilitas (usefulness). Pursuing aesthetics/ beauty is one of the architect’s primary roles. However, it is critical to comprehend ‘What is aesthetics?’ and its implications for the built-unbuilt environment and human beings. In a world where everything is changing, are the definitions, concepts, and parameters of aesthetics consistent? Is it subject to change over time? If so, should architectural students and professionals be aware of it and trained in it? This study aims to critically assess and analyse the dynamic aspects of aesthetics from 3300 BCE to present and establish the ‘best fit’ definition of aesthetics in architecture. The methodology used for the study is a mixed-method approach, a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature to investigate the origin of aesthetics and aesthetics in philosophy, environmental psychology and architecture. The aspects, criteria and sub-criteria identified from the analysis. The consensus is taken from expert interviews and a questionnaire survey (n=72). Findings reveal that aesthetics in architecture is dynamic/ ever-changing. It has nine contributing aspects that make aesthetics a performing aesthetics that emphasises the enhanced worth and value for money invested. These nine aspects are spatial organisation, functional efficiency, social, psychological, environmental, maintenance, sustainability, technology, and economics.

Abstract This paper main factors are mosque architecture, the theoretical framework of the ‘Sense of Place’, the creation of ‘Sacred Places’, the architectural and cultural heritage of Masjid Ar-Rahman, Kelantan, Malaysia. These factors are based on the Islamic religious understanding, and they are interrelated. The mosque is a sacred important symbol in Islam. The Malay Mosque is medium scale architecture, a humble typology but demonstrates strong cultural and architectural heritage. However, the current mosque architecture is dominated by the monumental domes and towers, the two foreign elements that replace native parts and alter the archipelago official mosque appearances. Hence the lack of local ‘Sense of Place’ and connection to the environment. The conceptual framework capitalizes the research gap found in mosque architecture by further delving into the creation of ‘Sacred Places’ through the ‘Sense of Place’. The Masjid Ar-Rahman of Pulau Gajah, constructed in 2016, demonstrates simplicity both in its traditional image and architectural scale with the Hindu-Buddhist syncretism. It is the value of hybrid assimilation and tolerance and coined as the Nusantara hybridised Malay and Javanese architectural styles and cultural heritage. This research employs qualitative methods of phenomenological and case study propositions supported by architectural evidence in emphasizing the symbolic and semiotic aesthetics aspects in constructing the ‘Sacred Spaces’ through the ‘Sense of Place’. The findings demonstrated that the ‘Sense of Place’ of Masjid Ar-Rahman is created by the simplicity of the mosque design reflected by the Sufistic beliefs and its connection to the environment.

The influence of imported material, technology and methods has put pressure on most traditional architectural systems to modernize. This influence to modernize is transmitted through various mechanisms. This paper argues that there are a number of aspects to vernacular architecture that would be lost through this conversion process to modern materials, technology and methods. Through the examination of vernacular architecture among the Lamba people of Senior Chief Mushili’s chiefdom, the study found that there are cultural, environmental and aesthetical aspects in vernacular architecture that are poorly understood in the process of modernization. Data for this research were collected through an ethnographical approach with occasional in-depth interviews with senior members of the Royal establishment and the community. Thus, the data were mainly qualitative.

Work in the office and the requirements of people as users of this environment changes fundamentally according to the way of implementation of the activities connected with obtaining, processing and exchange of information. Office workplace becomes not only variable, but almost mobile in time and space. Increase in the proportion of communication in administrative office work, changes of its ways and its implementation, and development of work arrangements in the working groups, are all reflected in the increasing demands for customization adaptation of environment office buildings. Architectural concepts thus must respond not only to the wishes of existing customers, but to a large extent also to the anticipated possible scenarios and alternatives of further development. Thus, the need to create spaces adaptable for different levels of group work, the multiple use of workplaces, or for focusing on work on projects with time-limited duration are included in the considerations about an office building. The user of a working environment will require its significantly greater adaptability to highly individualized needs of a diverse range of office activities. To secure them does not only mean better technical parameters of intelligent buildings concepts, but also a better organization of activities and their relation to the projection and architectural design of individual spaces and buildings as a whole.

Despite the modern and grandiose appearance of most architectural projects, closer examinations cast doubts on their sensitivity to the cultural and traditional past of the societies for which they were intended. Space for human habitation and interaction is one of the primary aspects of man's culture, and is basic to any architectural discussion. For a long time, architecture in most developing nations was shaped by colonial contexts and ideologies. The architects seemed more committed to revitalizing the civilization of other advanced countries within a new world setting. The focus of this paper is on the interplay between architecture and culture. The relationship between spaces created by architects and the local culture is examined within the context of place - the house, the community, the region, as well as the nation. The study identifies ties that bind groups together. It also explores the components that constitute spatial character. Physical and intangible aspects of materials in achieving environmental character are evaluated. Key questions regarding the professional and ideological inclination of architects are addressed. Islamic architecture is an ongoing argument for an extended period. Is it Islamic architecture, Muslim architecture, or architecture in Islam? Is it just visual elements or a way to use the inner space? Whatever the answer is, we will use the term Islamic architecture in this paper. To search and dig out the identities of so-called Islamics. This paper is seeking after these identities and their relations with Islamic culture to solve international architecture concepts without modifications or adaptation. The main goal is to extract the sociocultural aspects that define that architecture to be called Islamic Architecture. An analytical research method uses some attempts to interact the environmental conditions and social aspects with cultural and religious values to define Islamic architecture's identity. The study result and summary could be used to evaluate the satisfaction of the built environment of Muslims when and wherever they are. As a comprehensive result, Islamic Design Principles, Islamic Planning Principles, and Islamic Urban Design Principles could be extracted from Islamic sources and used everywhere at any time by anybody. These design principles may be used to upgrade the workability of the existing residential buildings simply by revising the opening's location, heights, and treatments. Architecture with that dynamic, flexible culture gives its identity a chance to compete globally to survive locally.

There are two main approaches when discussing living green walls: an ecological one and an artistic one. Ecological thinking mainly considers environmental aspects, comfort enhancement and energy consumption and oversees human interaction and actual proximity to plants. In opposition, art or architecture installations that involve vegetation, lack technical and ecological aspects, aiming to raise awareness on environmental issues using human interaction either physically (direct) or emotionally (indirect). The present paper aims to analyze methods of combining the two directions, in a functional, ecological, yet aesthetically pleasing composition. In order to further develop previous experiences gathered by the team members, authors of this article, a green installation concept made out of interactive modular systems unites all the knowledge into a new, living, moving, dynamic, interactive structure whose inspiration is taken from nature while using biomimicry as main principle for its development. This new concept responds and is influenced by both external, natural stimuli and by the human factor. Multidisciplinarity is a key element in developing this project, involving architecture, art, interior and landscape design, botany, geometry, mechanical and electrical engineering, leading towards new research directions and innovative approaches in greenery—interior environment connections.

Architecture, both in the practice and the education, is moving toward a higher environmental awareness. It is shown from the inclusion of ecology as one of the core subject in the curriculum. But, ecology is dominantly viewed and learned through a scientific and qualitative approach rather than a creative design methodology. This paper argues that ecology always has a potential to become the basis of creative design process. There are three key aspects in learning ecology in architecture: learning ecology as reading complexity, as understanding dynamicity, and as building up awareness of our position as designers. These key learning aspects are enabled by the nature of architectural design studio as educational environment. This paper examines the key aspects of ecological learning within one of the design studio in Universitas Indonesia. The study concludes that there is a relationship between the learning stages of the design project and the ecological understanding of the students.

The history of the issue is considered, scientific and qualification research from the 1960-s and 1970-s is analyzed. At present, there are observed tendencies of direct borrowing and transferring from the West of some new «techniques and principles», as well as putting forward rather superficial ideas regarding the transformation of the living environment, while fundamental domestic developments of the Soviet and post-Soviet times are often forgotten and ignored. Special attention is paid to the subject, problems and results of dissertation research in the field of architecture and urban planning, as well as related technical sciences. Knowing and understanding plants are essential factors for a successful landscape architecture project. Great landscape architects from the 20th and 21st centuries - such as Burle Marx, Fernando Chacel, Rosa Kliass, Caldeira Cabral, and Piet Oudolf - perceive vegetation as a link between nature and the city, in which the valuation and the respect for the landscape are the central points. Unfortunately, little focus has been given to the appropriate employment of plants in landscape architecture projects at architecture and urbanism schools, resulting in generic planting schemes. Should these schemes be called landscape architecture projects? Oppositely, Applied Botany to Landscape Architecture has as one of its objectives providing knowledge for the conception of plant palettes, which should consider not only aesthetic criteria but also biological and environmental ones from each species to establish a harmonious relationship with the existing environment. Thus, this article intends to present the experience and the results achieved in the discipline AQ553 - Special Topics in Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Architecture Theory III (Applied Botany to Landscape Architecture). For this discipline, it was adopted descriptive and bibliographical research as a methodology, which has made possible the understanding of aesthetical and environmental matters related to the plant element and how these attributes can be reflected in a landscape architecture project. By leading students to consider the architectural and biological aspects of the vegetation components in their proposals, the procedure adopted in this discipline had great outcomes; for instance, improvements in the areas of environmental perception, graphic representation and design of landscaping projects.

The article considers the architectural problems of modern secondary education from the point of view of changes in the requirements of both the functional planning structure of the school and the educational process, in accordance with the reform of the Ministry of Education and Science - “New Ukrainian School”. It is noted that in Ukraine, most schools were built during the Soviet era and, accordingly, they do not meet modern requirements and are in need of renovation. Various periods of the formation and design of schools during the Soviet Union, from 1926 to 1956, are examined. The role of school is defined as a place where a person begins to form as an individual, and starts to realize their role in life. The influence of the architecture of the school building on the character and worldview of the child is considered. Such modern design trends of schools abroad as “open space”, “aspect of mobility”, and environmental friendliness are elaborated upon. The formation of a free school space layout allows the child to feel free and comfortable, and also makes it possible not to “hold down” thoughts in the process of understanding oneself and the world around them, establishing a more creative atmosphere. Another important aspect of the formation of modern schools in the world is mobility. In schools with a mobile interior, the child and the teacher can change the space for themselves - move everything and rearrange it as they need. The items do not have a fixed place, it is decided as necessary. One of the current trends in the architecture and design of modern schools is the inextricable link with the natural environment, the active interaction of the building and natural elements, their inclusion in school architecture and indirectly in the educational process. This direction is implemented using the technologies of "green building", that allow to create a sustainable architectural environment for school buildings and complexes, which preserves and improves the environment. Some examples in modern world architecture are analyzed, illustrating approaches to the design and renovation of schools.

What kind of society does Islamic architecture reflect? What are the basic units and forms of Islamic society associated with Islamic architecture, and what kinds of relationships existed among its individuals? Is Islamic society a ‘uniform society’ or a ‘multi-layered society’? These fundamental questions are at the centre of this study. This paper explores the basic intellectual, social and environmental aspects that have shaped Islamic architecture. It explores these aspects as reflected in the building forms of Muslim societies. Functionalism and interactionism are two major schools of modern sociology. As a social phenomenon, Islamic architecture is examined in the light of these two schools. The urban fabric of the traditional Islamic city as an example of functionalism in architecture is examined with reference to the ruined city of Sāmarrāʾ, in Iraq; and examples of Ottoman architecture are considered as models of interactionism in city planning and architecture. The works of three major figures in contemporary Arab thought, Muḥammad Abed Al-Jabri and ʿAbdullah Al-ʿArawī from Morocco, and Mohammad Al-Anṣārī from Bahrain, are considered in this paper. Their thoughts and views are used as vehicles to test some innate features of Islamic architecture. The influence of language and the desert, two exceptionally important factors that have shaped the culture of Muslim societies and its manifestation in architecture, is also explored. The findings of this paper, although still at a preliminary stage, reiterate the major concepts of the medieval Arab scholar Ibn Khaldūn, in his Muqaddimah, in an architectural context.

It is important to take into account not only existing trends, analyzing development of architecture, but also to predict the probable ones. They may occur in the medium term, around 2050. Energy and information are two key areas that determine all other aspects of human life. The most important task of the energy sector is to provide clean energy in amounts not less than the current ones in the future. The only one possible source of clean energy that will provide all current needs for a million years is fusion. Quantum computer is considered a “Holy Grail” of IT sector. This computer speed exceeds the current PCs by millions of times, which opens unprecedented opportunities in all areas and allows the transition to new technological systems. New threats and challenges will arise in addition to new opportunities. It is very likely that, the concept of sustainable development and the recovery economy may not dominate after 2050. This change will mark a new stage in the development of architecture in the 22nd century. The most obvious changes will be the creation and use of new materials with programmable properties, the creation of architectural objects in inaccessible regions of the planet, the radical improvement of digital models of projected objects. Structural and engineering constraints will be much less, or virtually absent, for simple objects. Рractically unlimited power of computers will change most aspects of design, and the visual component of projects will be more like 5D movies than realistic visualizations today. Threats and challenges created by projected changes aren’t less impotent. Probably, architecture, like many other areas of human life, may be absorbed or subordinated to the IT branch. Forms of human existence and can be the most serious challenge of virtualization of social life. Dominance of the virtual over the reality may raise questions about sense of human nature at all. Artificial intelligence can be main creator of architecture. Role and place of architecture in society life will not the top ten in importance. It is also possible an architecture, separation on “new” and “old”, “human” and “computer” or by other dividing lines. Another challenge is the possibility of converging or even merging with design and cinema. Other tendencies of architecture development are also probable – multiplicity of design, internal structural ordering of architecture, new renaissance (revival) of architecture, higher degree of invasion of privacy when customer is a human person.

Abstract The architectural form of buildings is determined by many factors, one of the most important is construction technology. It remains in a close and inseparable relationship with architectural design. Contemporary technologies in construction are constantly subject to improvements, streamlining, changes aimed at increasing all kinds of efficiency (cost, thermal efficiency, labor input, etc.). One of today’s widely discussed determinants of changes in the way buildings are designed and constructed is environmental issue. An awareness of environmental degradation and climate change and their consequences prompts the search for increasingly sustainable solutions. This paper summarizes the research on prefabricated solutions and their implementation, especially in single-family residential architecture. This article presents pre-design, design, and post-design experiences related to planning and realization of single-family houses with prefabricated wall technology made of light expanded clay concrete. The authors implemented comparative qualitative and quantitative research through case studies, the method also uses experiences from their own research by design practice. The advantages and disadvantages of prefabrication in the selected technology are presented. The authors attempt to answer the question of whether the individual architectural design approach is reflected in the relevant environmental considerations, including, first, those related to the mitigation of climate change and adaptation to its consequences, and to what extent the discussed technology fits into the assumptions of climate and environmentally responsible design.

Balinese architecture often considers aspects of climate and natural conditions as well as environmental social life. This is to obtain a balance in the cosmos, between human life (bhuana alit / microcosm) and its natural environment (bhuana agung /macrocosm). However, Bali's progress in tourism has changed the way of life of the people, which is in line with Parsons Theory of Structural Functionalism, that if there is a change in the function of one part of an institution or structure in a social system, it will affect other parts, eventually affecting the condition of the social system as a whole. The shift in perspectives has caused structural and functional changes in Balinese architecture. The building design or architecture that emerges today is no longer oriented towards cosmic factors but is oriented towards modern factors, developing in the interests of tourism, commercialization, and lifestyle. The change has had an impact on spatial planning, building orientation, architectural appearance, interior furnishings and local regulations in architecture. In order to prevent Balinese architecture from losing its authenticity in its original form, which is full of spiritual meaning and local Balinese traditions, it is necessary to have a guideline on the specifications of Balinese architectural design that combines elements of aesthetics, comfort, technology, and spirituality. Through this guideline, Balinese architecture can exist in modern times without losing its traditional values.

Sustainability has been one of architecture’s most significant trends over the last twenty years. The environmental consciousness of professionals has put sustainability at the heart of the architectural profession and has contributed to adopting and implementing sustainable designs on the scale of urban landscapes. A green roof or living roof, which is a sustainable solution in architecture, is a roof on the surface of which plants are grown. The roof is covered by plants, covering the waterproof layer beneath the vegetation. However, various types of plants can be used in this scheme. Understanding the influencing factors in choosing the right plant species and the impact that utilizing green roofs has on the overall energy consumption of the building can tremendously help scientists and clarify the possible future research topics in this field. Hence, this article investigates energy optimization in the construction process of a green roof in sustainable architecture and its advantages and challenges. The results of this study show that budget limitations, managerial and organizational policies, legal issues, technical and scientific infrastructure, and cultural and geographical aspects are all affecting the widespread use of green roofs currently and need to be considered in future studies.

The findings show that residential designs and use are dynamic and likely to transform based on the owners’ evolving socio-cultural, economic and spatial requirements which highlight the relevance of vernacular and traditional architecture. This trend raises the professional concern on the need for further interrogation of current residential architecture approach. Thus, it has been concluded that professionals perspective should opt for less control of residential requirements and emphasise the recognition of socio-economic and cultural aspects which aspire for flexibility of form, function and spatial organization and facilitate design control by the house owner. Such revelation indicate the validity of vernacular and traditional architectural approach which integrate the local knowledge, optimum utilization of resources, nature and built environment.

Abstract Nowadays, people face two serious problems: the energy problem and the depletion of natural resources. Current solutions for managing environmental change have caused a great deal of waste of energy on heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting of our buildings. In the current paper, we propose an innovative multidisciplinary design system to combine biology, engineering, and basic principles of architecture for the construction of the building envelope that regulates environmental aspects. The study is based on adaptation strategies from biological systems and the contribution of “smart” materials and technologies toward the energy optimization of modern and future constructions, through the imitation of biological functions. Four bio-inspiration case studies are presented along with their architectural application, finishing with a comparative analysis to assess how well this methodology can be used in both present and future architecture and design. This research’s objective is to show how we can create a systematic transfer of knowledge between biology and technology. It aims to learn from biological principles and to apply this understanding to the development of bio-inspired structures, to understand the importance and impact that the use of bio-inspiration in architecture can have on the energy discussion.

The concept of integration of products and manufacturing processes in ecosystems is evolving from the consideration of environmental aspects to the integration of socio-economic aspects. On the other hand, the lifecycle of product and manufacturing process is the central point for organizing the activity that determines and materializes the environmental load of the product from cradle to grave. So far, there isn ́t an integrated model from the perspective of assessing the sustainability of products and processes with a focus on concurrent design. This paper develops a Holonic protomodel that constitutes an open architecture for lifecycle of sustainable products and processes that integrate the assess of products from social, economic and environmental perspective.

This article aims to provide a historical overview of the impact of architecture and decorative arts on health and health preservation in Muslim societies during the medieval era. Based on primary medical sources, this article provides a historical interpretation of the theoretical origin of the ignored link between medicine and architecture (and decorative arts). Our findings indicate that some empirical results concerning the effects and aspects of built environments (architectural spaces) on health and treatment–both physical and mental– have been considered in the medical sources. Practical instructions of these sources introduced two theoretical achievements: 1) an introduction to the historical knowledge of environmental health and design of healthy places, and 2) a comparative analogy of the built environment and human nature (organism), which became a theoretical basis for the relationship between natural sciences, architecture, and the decorative arts in the middle ages. Considerations of the study show the extent to which architects and artisans, based on the teachings and instructions of physicians, dealt with the structural and content adaptation models of architecture and decorative arts to human organism and nature.

Indonesia is a large and rich country, predicted to be number 6th in the world economy by 2023. This is of course followed by the development of business sectors in the country, especially creative industries including the architectural design industry. The growing competition in the world of architecture with the number of firms that have sprung up has encouraged business performer in search for “added value” that can make their services receive more attention from the public. One thing that is appealing is green architecture, especially building performance that offers environmental friendly and energy-saving options. Aspects of concern in building performance include energy efficiency itself, productivity, and comfort. For many people energy efficiency is often associated with retrenchment, that reduce comfort, one of which is thermal comfort. In fact, building performance works simultaneously. Considering 3 aspects that concern the building performance, one of them is comfort, thermal comfort is one of the concerns. In fact, many building performance strategies can be offered and applied to architectural designs that improve heat management, especially heat loss such as shade and ventilation / ventilation that can handle this. With the right strategy, it is not only the energy savings we get, the comfort of the residents themselves can be maintained.

Environmental and anatomic factors determine the limits of an individual's participation in daily activities. Design decisions determine the inclusivity of the built environment. Within this respect, disability studies take place in the architecture curriculum. This study investigates the disability and design relation within the context of architectural education. It seeks to answer how the experiencing method affects the approach of architecture students to the disability concept. For this purpose, the experiences and activities of undergraduate students of the "Disability in Design" elective course in the Department of Architecture at Duzce University have been analysed and evaluated. Within the scope of the study, enrolled students were asked to form 3–5 membered groups, choose a disability type, and experience the campus according to the determined disability. Data sources of this study are video recordings, empathy maps, student groups' reports, and observation results. The students' work was analysed and discussed to identify the effects of experiencing on disability awareness. The participating students of this study showed that through experiencing, they could relate the designed environment to the physical, emotional, and social aspects of disability. This study reveals that the experiencing method can be a powerful tool to help students comprehend the influential role of design decisions in the participation of different user groups in daily life.
