Threatened species' lists have been consistently reviewed as easily misused, inappropriately applied, counterproductive, and reflecting changes in knowledge more often than changes in threat status (Burgman, 2002; de Grammont and Cuaron, 2006; Possingham et al., 2002; Seminoff and Shanker, 2008). However, with limited resources to deal with endangered species, effective conservation decision-making needs a means of determining where priorities lie. The EDGE list of the world's most ?Evolutionary Distinct? and ?Globally Endangered? amphibians ranks New Zealand's endemic Archey's Frog Leiopelma archeyi at the top of its list (www.edgeofexistence.org/ amphibians/top_100.php). What role should this ranking or any other threatened species list play in determining conservation priorities in New Zealand?

<p>Understanding emotional influence that affect sport performance in archery helps to design the appropriate intervention in athlete’s preparation. The present study examined the effect of emotion intensity from four Olympic level recurve archers on error scores and performance outcomes; compared individual emotion intensities of three competing archers during Olympic competition with previously established individual optimal zone; and examined the influence of being “in or out of individual zone” relating the archer’s achievement with the individual target set by the coach and performance outcome during Olympic competition. The results revealed that unpleasant dysfunctional emotion (N-) had the most influence on performance score. The in-out of zone results derived from the archers data lend support to emotion-performance relationship.</p>

<p>Studies have indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic has had miserable effects on athlete performance due to the movement control order (MCO) announced by the Malaysia Government. Dealing with self-training without the coach's guidance leads the archers to lose concentration, diminished self-confidence, and elevated anxiety levels. These factors contribute to inconsistent shooting performance. This study attempted to identify the archer's anxiety status during the training isolation period on the shooting performance. A total of 32 participants from the recurve archery category were recruited and enrolled in a web-based cross-sectional study during the MCO. The CSAI-2R instrument was applied to participants to examine the psychological aspect. Training Isolation resulted in a significant effect on anxiety status and shooting performance. Analysis from CSAI-2R, low-level archers, indicated 5% more anxiety than top-level archers for both cognitive and somatic anxiety sub-component. In contrast, Top archers revealed a higher self-confidence mean of 2.32 (moderately high) than low archers (1.38). The result shows improvement in anxiety and score performance with complete online monitoring and coaching supervision first session until the 8th session. These findings could assist sports institutions in improving a better training experience and understanding the pandemic's impact on athletes' mental health during home isolation.</p>

Archery is a type of sport which participants release the arrow after aiming the target. The shot of an arrow must be accurate to the highest score on the target face. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the most the most contributing variable in archery performance. Methodology: A total of 31 females and males, aged between 13 – 18 years old from Pusat Latihan Negeri Unit Sukan Prestasi Tinggi, Majlis Sukan Negeri, Negeri Sembilan participated in this study. They were involved in different level of achievement in archery competition, ranging from beginner until expert archers. They were also free from any injuries. The participants engaged in three test, which were arm muscle strength test, push-up test, stork balance stand test. Result: The Pearson correlation analysis showed there was significant relationship among variable measured. In addition, regression analysis showed the arm muscle strength and muscle endurance were the most contributed variable in archery performance. Findings and discussion: These elements can be indicators of an archer’s skill level and can be applied as important parameter to select potential archers and also assessment of archer’s performance. The time taken to develop the archer to become an expert archer can be shortening due to focusing on important variables.

One would think that standing closer to the target should be an advantage; however, most archers do not take this approach. This article considers the score increase that may be attributable to standing in the optimum position, which can lead to a potential higher ranking place at major international indoor and outdoor archery competitions.

During competitions, archers lose points due to errors that vary linearly or quadratically according to the distance to a target. Minimizing the quadratic variables, such as bow cant variation, should result in improvements in an archer’s performance at longer distances in major competitions. Theoretically, a bow cant angle variation of 0.1° from shot to shot can significantly affect an individual’s score. However, this error factor has not been directly measured or observed. Thus, a wireless sensor suite was developed to measure the bow’s movements and confirm that such variations exist. This unit can measure up to 0.05° in multiple orientations and record additional information, such as acceleration at 200 Hz sampling rate. Based on results from experiments with six state-level archers, the wireless sensor system successfully recorded more than 200 shots. From the acquired data, variations were reported from shot to shot. Therefore, it is predicted that an archer may lose up to 23 points per 36 arrows shot using a recurve bow due to this lateral bow angle variation.

The three native frog species of New Zealand were examined for gastrointestinal helminth parasites. Leiopelma hamiltoni was uninfected. Leiopelma hochstetteri was parasitized by the nematodes Aplectana novaezelandiae n.sp. and Cosmocerca australis n.sp. (both Cosmocercidae: Cosmocercinae), and the digenean Dolichosaccus (Lecithopyge) novaezealandiae Prudhoe, 1972 (Telorchiidae: Opisthoglyphinae). Leiopelma archeyi was infected with Cosmocerca archeyi n.sp. The three new cosmocercid species are differentiated readily from congenerics in other parts of the world by caudal features of the males and the shape of the female tail. Cosmocerca archeyi differs from C. australis in the shape of the tail in both males and females, the lack of rosette caudal papillae in males, and the possession of an unusually robust ventral somatic musculature in females. Since the native frogs from New Zealand are believed to have been isolated since the Mesozoic, the presence in them of cosmocercids that fall readily into well-established genera confirms the antiquity of the subfamily Cosmocercinae.

Abstract:This paper is about the mind of the embedded individual in heterodox economics. Beginning from Margaret Archer's analysis of modes of reflexivity and following the respective contributions of Geoff Hodgson and John Davis, the paper seeks to integrate into Archer's approach a place for habitual beliefs and an analysis of the ‘relative autonomy’ of the embedded individual. Archer's identification of modes of reflexivity is endorsed but her avoidance of any dispositional place for habit in the mind is questioned. It is argued that by excluding habits in this way, Archer, unlike Davis, implausibly assumes most individuals have achieved relative autonomy in their group associations. The essay develops an approach to the mind that articulates underlying relationships between habits and internal conversation, potentially enriching Archer's explanation of modes of reflexivity while locating Davis's notion of relative autonomy within that framework. Specific economic implications are then briefly considered.

The triumphal arches, a product of imperial propaganda, are the most famous and widespread Roman triumphal monuments. The official Roman coins illustrated on their reverse the triumphal arches located in the capital of the empire, Rome. Many of these monuments are still preserved, but some have disappeared in the tumult of history. Therefore, coins become “evidence” of the existence of these buildings when thy have not survived over centuries or allow the reconstruction of parts that have disappeared from them. The provincial coins of Lower Moesia also speak of the presence of such triumphal monuments (unknown now by of archaeological discoveries) from this border province. In this paper, some considerations are expressed regarding the numismatic evidence of the triumphal arches at Markianopolis and Tomis.

This paper aims to show James' ideal culture and women's growth in The Portrait of a Lady by analyzing his criticism of Transcendentalism and analyzing Isabel Archer's psychological activities with the method of psychological realism. Isabel Archer's desire for European culture at the beginning reflects her willingness to accept European culture, which makes her better absorb European culture. Her choice of marriage reflects that she gradually recognizes and accepts the reality, and finds a husband who embodies the integration of European and American culture. She finally understands the significance of responsibility and morality and returns to marriage, which reflects Henry James' ideal of integrating two cultures.

The mandibular and hyoid arches collectively make up the facial skeleton, also known as the viscerocranium. Although all three germ layers come together to assemble the pharyngeal arches, the majority of tissue within viscerocranial skeletal components differentiates from the neural crest. Since nearly one third of all birth defects in humans affect the craniofacial region, it is important to understand how signalling pathways and transcription factors govern the embryogenesis and skeletogenesis of the viscerocranium. This review focuses on mouse and zebrafish models of craniofacial development. We highlight gene regulatory networks directing the patterning and osteochondrogenesis of the mandibular and hyoid arches that are actually conserved among all gnathostomes. The first part of this review describes the anatomy and development of mandibular and hyoid arches in both species. The second part analyses cell signalling and transcription factors that ensure the specificity of individual structures along the anatomical axes. The third part discusses the genes and molecules that control the formation of bone and cartilage within mandibular and hyoid arches and how dysregulation of molecular signalling influences the development of skeletal components of the viscerocranium. In conclusion, we notice that mandibular malformations in humans and mice often co-occur with hyoid malformations and pinpoint the similar molecular machinery controlling the development of mandibular and hyoid arches.

The pharyngeal arches of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) are persistent in the gut of juvenile walleye (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum). The relationship of fork length to GAP (chord length between the dorsal and ventral extremities of the left pharyngeal arch) measurements of left pharyngeal arches of fathead minnows is linear, positive, and highly significant. Fish lengths calculated from arches recovered from stomachs after a period of up to 8 h generally fell within the prediction intervals established for the regression of fork lengths on arch measurements of freshly killed minnows. The relationship between length and arch measurement will permit the length of ingested fathead minnows to be calculated aiding in food size selection and energetic studies. Other minnow species, sharing the same habitats with fathead minnows, have distinctive pharyngeal arches which can be used to identify species in stomach contents. Length may also be correlated with pharyngeal arch measurements in these species.

one of the methods of formation of geometric networks of arches of the same radius using regular spherical polyhedra is Investigated. The conditions of the task of placing the specified network on the sphere are set. The criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of solving the problem is the minimum number of standard sizes of segments of the dome arches, the possibility of using technologies of enlarging assembly. The solution of one variant of the problem of placing a geometric network on a spherical cube and, accordingly, on a sphere is given. Placement on the sphere of arches of one radius, different from placement in the form of meridians, has an effective solution in the form of a network with minimal dimensions of arch segments and nodes of paired arches formed on the basis of circles of identical radii formed on the basis of regular spherical polyhedra. The problem is solved by constructing an independent framework of arches of the same radius on the basis of paired circles of the same radius in the spherical cube system.

In this research paper, we investigated one of the methods of formation of geometric networks of arches of the same radius using regular spherical polyhedra. The variants of cutting sustainable energy-efficient coatings of buildings in the form of spherical domes are proposed. The task conditions of placing the specified network on the sphere are set. The criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of solving the problem is the minimum number of standard sizes of segments of the dome arches, the possibility of using pre-assembly technologies. The solution of one variant of the problem as placing the network on a spherical icosahedron and, accordingly, on a sphere is given. The placement of arches of one radius on the sphere, different from the location in the form of meridians, has an effective solution in the form of a network with minimal dimensions of arch segments and with nodes of paired arches comprised on the basis of circles of the same radii formed on the ground of regular spherical polyhedra. The problem is solved by constructing and combining in a system of regular spherical polyhedral with independent frameworks of arches of the same radius on the basis of paired circles of equal radius.

The electroencephalograph (EEG) microstate is a method used to describe the characteristics of the EEG signal through the brain scalp electrode potential’s spatial distribution; as such, it reflects the changes in the brain’s functional state. The EEGs of 13 elite archers from China’s national archery team and 13 expert archers from China’s provincial archery team were recorded under the alpha rhythm during the resting state (with closed eyes) and during archery aiming. By analyzing the differences between the EEG microstate parameters and the correlation between these parameters with archery performance, as well as by combining our findings through standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography source analysis (sLORETA), we explored the changes in the neural activity of professional archers of different levels, under different states. The results of the resting state study demonstrated that the duration, occurrence, and coverage in microstate D of elite archers were significantly higher than those of expert archers and that their other microstates had the greatest probability of transferring to microstate D. During the archery aiming state, the average transition probability of the other microstates transferring to microstate in the left temporal region was the highest observed in the two groups of archers. Moreover, there was a significant negative correlation between the duration and coverage of microstates in the frontal region of elite archers and their archery performance. Our findings indicate that elite archers are more active in the dorsal attention system and demonstrate a higher neural efficiency during the resting state. When aiming, professional archers experience an activation of brain regions associated with archery by suppressing brain regions unrelated to archery tasks. These findings provide a novel theoretical basis for the study of EEG microstate dynamics in archery and related cognitive motor tasks, particularly from the perspective of the subject’s mental state.

To solve the problem of cultural and chronological affiliation of the Archekas burial mound, located on the right bank of the Kiya River (left tributary of the Chulym River), in the Middle Kiya archaeological microdistrict in the north-east of Kuzbass, the author analyzed the elemental composition of the metal of the accompanying inventory from two collective and one single burials of the burial ground, which consisted of two burial mounds. The materials of the archaeological site have a chronologically and territorially wide range of analogies; therefore, since the first comprehension of the results of excavations in 1971 (the works of A.M. Kulemzin), they entail conflicting dating and understanding of the cultural attribution of this object. The data published in the article about the composition of copper-bronze alloys of seven objects (two mirrors, a celt, two buckles, a knife and a badge-wheel) were obtained as a result of application of two methods - non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface and atomic emission spectroscopy with inductively coupled plasma, when a metal sample in the form of swarf is analyzed. The publication of the results of the analysis of metal products is accompanied by their description and illustrations. Statistical and archaeometallurgical interpretation of the data obtained showed that by the ratio of chemical and metallurgical groups of copper-based alloys (43% of tin bronzes, 14% of arsenous-tin bronzes, 29% of “pure” copper, 14% of arsenic copper) the studied collection of bronzes is close to the materials of the sites of the Upper Ob region (Kulay culture, Kamenny Cape burial ground), Kiya-Chulym interfluve (Lepeshkinsky stage of the Tagar culture, Serebryakovo I burial ground) and Tuva (Uyuk-Saglyn culture, Suglug-Khem burial ground) dated III-II centuries BCE. Like the Archekas collection, the sets of non-ferrous metal of this time are distinguished by the absence of pieces with a pronounced predominance of tin or arsenic alloys. This shows the transitional nature of the metallurgical strategy, which fits in terms of relative chronology between the tradition of tin alloys of the middle of the 1st millennium BCE and copper-arsenic alloys at the turn of the era. In combination with the analysis of the range of late analogies of the objects of the Archekas burial ground, covering the period from the II century BCE until the VI century BCE, the data on the elemental composition of the bronzes allow concluding that the metallurgical tradition is archaic, which is recorded on the basis of the materials of the only burial site investigated in the Archekas archaeological complex. The analogies given for the Archekas inventory from the monuments of the Bolsherechensk culture of the Upper Ob region, mainly of its Berezovsky stage (II-I centuries BCE), are supported by the hypothesis earlier expressed by V.V. Bobrov about the nearby Kuznetsk Basin as a seasonal pasture of the population of the Bolsherechensk culture.

Jaws and branchial arches together are a basic, segmented feature of the vertebrate head. Seven arches develop in the zebrafish embryo (Danio rerio), derived largely from neural crest cells that form the cartilaginous skeleton. In this and the following paper we describe the phenotypes of 109 arch mutants, focusing here on three classes that affect the posterior pharyngeal arches, including the hyoid and five gill-bearing arches. In lockjaw, the hyoid arch is strongly reduced and subsets of branchial arches do not develop. Mutants of a large second class, designated the flathead group, lack several adjacent branchial arches and their associated cartilages. Five alleles at the flathead locus all lead to larvae that lack arches 4–6. Among 34 other flathead group members complementation tests are incomplete, but at least six unique phenotypes can be distinguished. These all delete continuous stretches of adjacent branchial arches and unpaired cartilages in the ventral midline. Many show cell death in the midbrain, from which some neural crest precursors of the arches originate. lockjaw and a few mutants in the flathead group, including pistachio, affect both jaw cartilage and pigmentation, reflecting essential functions of these genes in at least two neural crest lineages. Mutants of a third class, including boxer, dackel and pincher, affect pectoral fins and axonal trajectories in the brain, as well as the arches. Their skeletal phenotypes suggest that they disrupt cartilage morphogenesis in all arches. Our results suggest that there are sets of genes that: (1) specify neural crest cells in groups of adjacent head segments, and (2) function in common genetic pathways in a variety of tissues including the brain, pectoral fins and pigment cells as well as pharyngeal arches.

One of the more ambitious intellectual projects of recent years is the body of work by Margaret S. Archer which centres on her Social Origins of Educational Systems, published in 1979. Archer's thesis is that modern educational systems are of two basic kinds, centralized and decentralized, and that their character and functioning are conditioned by the social and political conflicts of their formative phases. The underlying contrast is between France and England: this was Archer's starting-point, and in 1971 she published Social Conflict and Educational Change in England and France 1789–1848 in collaboration with Michalina Vaughan. Social Origins of Educational Systems extended this in time, bringing the story down to the present day, and in national coverage, adding Russia and Denmark to the countries examined. A shorter ‘University edition’—reduced to 234 pages from over 800—has now been published which is again restricted to England and France.

The Arches is one of the youngest, densest and most massive clusters in the Galaxy. As such it provides a unique insight into the lifecycle of the most massive stars known and the formation and survival of such stellar aggregates in the extreme conditions of the Galactic Centre. In a previous study we presented an initial stellar census for the Arches and in this work we expand upon this, providing new and revised classifications for ∼30% of the 105 spectroscopically identified cluster members as well as distinguishing potential massive runaways. The results of this survey emphasise the homogeneity and co-evality of the Arches and confirm the absence of H-free Wolf-Rayets of WC sub-type and predicted luminosities. The increased depth of our complete dataset also provides significantly better constraints on the main sequence population; with the identification of O9.5 V stars for the first time we now spectroscopically sample stars with initial masses ranging from ∼16 M⊙ to ≥120 M⊙. Indeed, following from our expanded stellar census we might expect ≳50 stars within the Arches to have been born with masses ≳60 M⊙, while all 105 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members are massive enough to leave relativistic remnants upon their demise. Moreover the well defined observational properties of the main sequence cohort will be critical to the construction of an extinction law appropriate for the Galactic Centre and consequently the quantitative analysis of the Arches population and subsequent determination of the cluster initial mass function.

Possibility to increase load-carrying capacity of arch-type timber roof of multifunctional public building with the span equal to 60 m was analysed. Three-hinged segment arches with the rectangular glued cross-sections are considered as the main load-carrying structures in the transversal direction. Freely supported purlins with the massive rectangular cross-sections are considered as the main load-carrying structures in the longitudinal direction. The dependences between height of the arches, it bays and distances between the bracing members strengthening top and bottom zone of the arches cross-sections so as relative materials consumption and specific load-carrying capacity of the arches were obtained as the second power polynomial equations. Height of the arches and it bay changes within the limits from 10 to 30 and from 2 to 9 m, correspondingly. The distances between the bracing members strengthening top and bottom zone of the arches changes within the limits from 2 till 10 and from 4 till 16 m, correspondingly. The arch-type timber roof was considered under the action of the load combination which include structural dead weight, drifted and undrifted snow loads and wind loads. The relative materials consumption of the arches was determined as a relation between the dead weight of the arch to it span and changes within the limits from 24 till 114 kg/m. Glued and solid timber with strength classes GL24h and C24 are considered as materials of arches and purlins, correspondingly. The specific load-carrying capacity of the arches was determined as a relation between load –carrying capacity of the arche and volume of structural materials. Specific load-carrying capacity of the arches changes within the limits from 0.23 till 0.83 kN/m/t in the case, if purlins are taken into account. It was shown, that the rational from the point of view of materials consumption and specific load-carrying capacity height of the arche, it bays so as the distances between the bracing members strengthening top and bottom zone of the arches are equal to 15, 7.5, 5 and 15 m, correspondingly. Corresponding values of relative materials consumption and specific load-carrying capacity are equal to 24 and 0.23 kN/m/t. The depth and width of the arche cross-section were equal to 1617 and 318 mm, correspondingly. It was shown, that strengthening of the arches cross-section by the steel bars of strength class B500 and carbon fibre reinforced plastic tape Sika Crbo Dur S512 enables to increase load-carrying capacity of the arche by 10.20 and 9.48%, correspondingly. But common use of the steel bars together with the carbon fibre reinforced plastic tapes enables to increase load-carrying capacity of the arche by 18.89%.

The present study aimed to test the effect of imagery training based on neurofeedback in elite archers of South Korea. Imagery training was provided to six elite archers, who imagined shooting three arrows in a set for a total of eight sessions. During imagery training, actual sounds recorded from an international archery Competition were played and Neurofeedback training was provided in a laboratory. In order to accurately measure EEG (Electroencephalogram), the archers were sufficiently rested, and the external environments were controlled before training began to prevent interference by artifacts. EEG was measured while the archers performed imagery training; real-time feedback was provided using vibrations when the waveform of beta waves was outside of the threshold determined for each archer. In addition, to test the effect of imagery training, scales assessing sports competitive state anxiety and sports imagery were administered before and after training, and pre-post changes were assessed. The results showed that in all archers, beta waves stabilized and vibration frequency decreased in post-measurement. Anxiety levels were reduced and imagery ability improved. Based on the findings, real-time neurofeedback training is believed to enhance athletes' self-regulation.

In archery, there is the relationship among stability of the archer, adjustments made during the aiming procedure, and the targeting coordination. Twelve specialists from the male archery team of National College of Physical Education and Sports took part in this research, with 12 arrows sets up at a distance of 70 m. A laser pen is located on the bow handle for capturing the trajectory of the aiming procedure with a digital video camera, and the other camera for the coordination of target. The Ariel Performance Analysis System motion analysis system is used to obtain the x and y aiming trajectory coordinates for analyzing the correlation. Results of this research were: (1) Ten archers whose variation of the x axis is larger than that of the y axis. (2) There are four archers whose aiming adjustment procedure has all the positive correlation with the target in the x axis, but there are three archers with all negative correlation. (3) In terms of the correlation in the y axis, there are six archers with all positive correlation, but there are two archers with all negative correlation.

Abstract Objective: To test the hypothesis that there is no difference in the dimensions of the upper and lower dental arches in Class II division 1 malocclusion with a mandibular deficiency compared to normal Class I occlusion dental arches. Materials and Methods: Photocopies of the dental arches of 48 patients exhibiting Class II division 1 malocclusion with mandibular deficiency and of 51 individuals with normal occlusion were compared. Mandibular deficiency was diagnosed clinically. All 99 individuals were in the permanent dentition. The ages of the subjects ranged from 11 years 4 months to 20 years (mean age = 12 years 5 months). Results: When compared to subjects with normal occlusion, the upper dental arches of the Class II division 1 patients presented reduced transverse dimensions and longer sagittal dimensions while the lower arches were less influenced. Conclusion: The hypothesis is rejected. Significant differences are present between the dimensions of the upper and lower dental arches in Class II division 1 malocclusion (with a mandibular deficiency and in the permanent dentition) compared to normal Class I occlusion dental arches.

Аналогии редким железным наконечникам стрел позволяют предполагать, что перемещения кочевых групп происходили от предгорий Кавказа к азовским плавням. The paper reviews materials of a warrior grave dug in a Bronze Age kurgan. Regarding the list of finds, in particular, its archer's set, it can be dated to 620/610590/580 BC linking it to the early Scythian cultural tradition. Analogies to rare iron arrowheads suggest that the nomadic population groups moved from the Caucasus foothills to the flooded areas of the Sea of Azov.

Purpose: This is the first report to compare 3-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) images between pediatric patients with enuresis and children without lower urinary tract symptoms who underwent pelvic CT for other reasons.Methods: Forty-seven children (33 boys and 14 girls) with primary enuresis underwent 3D-CT of sacrococcygeal bones. The control group consisted of 138 children (78 boys and 60 girls) who underwent pelvic CT for other reasons. First, we determined the presence or absence of unfused sacral arches at the L4-S3 levels in both cohorts. Subsequently, we compared the fusion of sacral arches in age- and sex-matched children from these 2 groups.Results: Dysplastic sacral arches, characterized by lack of fusion at 1 or more levels of the S1–3 arches, were observed in nearly all patients in the enuresis group. In the control group (n=138), 54 of 79 children over 10 years old (68%) exhibited fused sacral arches at 3 S1–3 levels. All 11 control children under 4 years old displayed at least 2 unfused sacral arches at the S1–3 levels. In a comparative study of age- and sex-matched patients with enuresis and control children aged 5 to 13 years (n=32 for each group, with 21 boys and 11 girls; mean age, 8.0±2.2 years [range, 5–13 years]), only 1 patient (3%) in the enuresis group exhibited fusion of all S1–3 arches. In contrast, 20 of 32 control group participants (63%) had 3 fused sacral arches (P<0.0001).Conclusions: Sacral vertebral arches typically fuse by the age of 10 years. However, in this study, children with enuresis exhibited a significantly elevated prevalence of unfused sacral arches, suggesting that dysplastic development of sacral vertebral arches may play a pathological role in enuresis.

The in-plane failure modes of steel arches range from the extremes of plastic collapse for stocky arches with significant bending actions to elastic buckling for slender arches in uniform compression. Between these extremes, failure involves an interaction between plastic collapse and elastic buckling which depends on the arch profile, support conditions, loading, and slenderness, and is influenced by geometrical imperfections and residual stresses. Few design codes give methods for designing steel arches against in-plane failure. The methods that are used are essentially based either on the buckling strengths of equivalent columns, or on the use of moment amplification or second-order elastic analysis and the attainment of a limiting stress. Any method based solely on elastic analysis and a limiting stress is necessarily conservative for stocky arches with negligible stability effects, since it ignores the often substantial redistributions that take place after first yield. This paper discusses the use of the method of plastic collapse analysis for the in-plane design of steel arches.

Context. Located within the central region of the Galaxy, the Arches cluster appears to be one of the youngest, densest, and most massive stellar aggregates within the Milky Way. As such, it has the potential to be uniquely instructive laboratory for the study of star formation in extreme environments and the physics of very massive stars. Aims. To realise this possibility, the fundamental physical properties of both cluster and constituent stars need to be robustly determined; tasks we attempt here. Methods. In order to accomplish these goals we provide and analyse new multi-epoch near-IR spectroscopic data obtained with the VLT/SINFONI and photometry from the HST/WFC3. We are able to stack multiple epochs of spectroscopy for individual stars in order to obtain the deepest view of the cluster members ever obtained. Results. We present spectral classifications for 88 cluster members, all of which are WNLh or O stars: a factor of three increase over previous studies. We find no further examples of Wolf–Rayet stars within the cluster; importantly no H-free examples were identified. The smooth and continuous progression in spectral morphologies from O super/hypergiants through to the WNLh cohort implies a direct evolutionary connection. We identify candidate giant and main sequence O stars spectroscopically for the first time. No products of binary evolution may be unambiguously identified despite the presence of massive binaries within the Arches. Conclusions. Notwithstanding difficulties imposed by the highly uncertain (differential) reddening to the Arches, we infer a main sequence/luminosity class V turn-off mass of ~30−38 M⊙ via the distribution of spectral types. Analysis of the eclipsing binary F2 suggests current masses of ~80 M⊙ and ~60 M⊙ for the WNLh and O hypergiant cohorts, respectively; we conclude that all classified stars have masses >20 M⊙. An age of ~2.0−3.3 Myr is suggested by the turn-off between ~O4-5 V; constraints imposed by the supergiant population and the lack of H-free WRs are consistent with this estimate. While the absence of highly evolved WC stars strongly argues against the prior occurrence of SNe within the Arches, the derived age does accommodate such events for exceptionally massive stars. Further progress will require quantitative analysis of multiple individual cluster members in addition to further spectroscopic observations to better constrain the binary and main sequence populations; nevertheless it is abundantly clear that the Arches offers an unprecedented insight into the formation, evolution and death of the most massive stars nature allows to form.

Buckling loads of arches could be significantly affected by the assumptions made on the load behavior during buckling. For a funicular arch whose centerline coincides with the compression line, we may consider two types of load behaviors based on how the line of load action shifts during buckling. This paper presents the governing differential equations for the elastic in-plane buckling problem of funicular circular arches under uniform radial pressure based on the two different load behavior assumptions, as well as analytical and numerical methods for analysis. For the analytical method, buckling criteria of rotationally-restrained ended circular arches with an internal rotational spring are formulated by using the general solution of the governing differential equation. For the numerical method, the Hencky bar-chain model (HBM) and its simple matrix formulations for general funicular arches are established. The buckling loads and mode shapes of funicular circular arches are solved by using HBM and verified against exact solutions obtained from the analytical method. For funicular catenary arches and parabolic arches, the buckling load solutions by HBM with various number of segments are also obtained and compared with the solutions presented by the previous researchers.

The forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiration volume in one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow (PEF), maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV), maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) of the archers were measured. To determine the shooting performance, a total of 30 shots (15+15) were taken from an 18-meter distance in closed shooting range. Results: A significant difference was found between the 15 shots done in each half and the total shot point and the averages of FVC (r=0.375, 0.353, 0.378 respectively) and FEV1 (r=0.368, 0.339, 0.367 respectively). However, a significant difference was not found among these shot points and other respiratory parameters (p>0.05). A relationship was detected between the second 15-shot points of boy archers and MEP (r=0.370). Conclusions: A strong correlation was not found between the respiratory parameters and shooting performances of the archers in this study. However, it is thought that this level of relationship will rise as training level and age increases.

The Court of Arches is the Archbishop's court of appeal for the Province of Canterbury. It derives its name from the church of St. Mary-le-Bow or St. Maria de Arcubus in the city of London where the court was held from at least the primacy of Archbishop Pecham (1279–92) until the church was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. The church was one of thirteen in the City of London which, before the abolition of peculiars in the middle of the nineteenth century, came within the Archbishop's jurisdiction of the deanery of the Arches. The judge or Official Principal who presided over the Court of Arches came to be known as the Dean of the Arches from his lesser office as judge of the court of the peculiar.

Several years ago, i read an item in Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School from an author who used information from her summer vacation to design lessons for a middle school mathematics class (fisher 1999). on one summer vacation while hiking through arches national park in moab, utah, i thought that surely there was mathematics in the science and geology of the sandstone rock formations around me. The park office and souvenir store sold books containing information that would help me discover some of the mathematics of the arches (Baars 1993; Johnson 1985).While reading these books and having taught middle school mathematics for many years, it occurred to me that lessons could be written about large numbers. The sandstone cliffs, from which the arches were formed, date back 140 million years; in addition, they are on the colorado plateau, which dates back 200 million years. The erosion that formed currentday arches began 2 million years ago. a lesson on geometry and measurement could also be written, since the area was part of the paradox Basin, a 10,000 squaremile depression. however, could some relevant algebra be found in the data about the history and geology of arches national park?
