Pełny tekst źródłaThe goal of this thesis is to elucidate the nature of character perspective in regard to worldbuilding for a setting. My research involved delving into writing journal articles, examining the formatting of stories in how they introduced their settings, and general reading. My main focus was on fictional tales, especially those that used the traveler archetype. Also, I examined how the reader’s view of the given world changes depending on the character whose eyes they are looking at the environment through. In my critical introduction, I address the issues and structure related to use of the traveler archetype in stories. In my own stories, I exemplify these characteristics by showing worlds from different perspectives. I conclude that the traveler archetype works well toward building a setting for the reader to explore due to the perspective it offers, because both the character’s and the reader’s eyes are fresh when making contact with the foreign.

Pełny tekst źródłaENGLISH ABSTRACT: The stereotypical figure of the femme fatale as irresistible seductress, who inevitably brings about death, is well known. This figure is nevertheless strangely absent from Afrikaans literature. This is what makes the appearance of the character of Nicolette in André Brink’s novel, The Ambassador (1963), so remarkable. Not only is she a complex femme fatale, she also adds a new dimension to the cliché. The striking similarities between Nicolette and Kathe, the female protagonist in Henri-Pierre Roché’s novel Jules et Jim (1953), justify a comparative study between these two novels. Although both of them bring about death, it seems that the presence of these femme fatale characters has positive rather than negative consequences. Contrary to the stereotypical evil temptress, Nicolette and Kathe are more natural, spontaneous and unpredictable – apparently free from the constricting qualities of the bloodthirsty femme fatale. In this comparative study, the image of the femme fatale is investigated through the close examination of its role and function in Jules et Jim and The Ambassador. By examining the philosopher René Girard’s theories on mimetic desire, violence and sacrifice as well as Georges Bataille’s ideas on eroticism and death, the nature of the femme fatale in these two novels is analysed in order to determine to what extent the image of the femme fatale as negative archetype could be reconsidered.

Pełny tekst źródłaBy using archetypes, it is possible to define how data are stored in the EHR,which facilitates querying for data.
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the possibility of connecting a decisionsupport system to archetype-based medical records by using the ArchetypeQuery Language (AQL) and the Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL).
The result shows that, since SWRL is a logic language rather than a programminglanguage, built-ins are necessary to allow SWRL rules to function as programmingrules. Built-ins are SWRL modules that can be written in e.g. Java, which allows complex functions to be created.
The conclusion is that built-ins can be used to connect archetypes and SWRLrules by querying the archetype path with AQL. There are however several ruledesign factors to consider when using SWRL e.g. data location problems.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe traditions are categorized into the following typologies, each of which is analyzed in a separate chapter: (a) biographical traditions, (b) legal theory, (c) legal ethics and procedure, (d) substantive law, (e) Shi`a juridical traditions. The analysis of the biographical traditions reveals that quite early after Shurayh&dotbelow;'s death---estimated at sometime between 76/695 and 99/718, he had evolved into a hazy figure.
In addition to providing a response to the thesis question, the conclusion seeks to answer some other questions, among them: why did Shurayh&dotbelow;, who was not the legal reasoner par excellence of his time, metamorphose into an aretological figure? Why did the Kufans seek to back-project his appointment to the time of `Umar? Based on the evidence, it is concluded that in Kufan imagery, Shurayh&dotbelow;'s legal opinions were deemed as valid as those of a Companion, and he personified the Kufan authority of "pastness."

In response to the current environmental challenges, city governments worldwide are developing action plans to both reduce GHG emissions and increase the resilience of their built environment. Given the relevance of energy use in buildings, such plans introduce a variety of efficiency and supply planning strategies ranging from the scale of buildings, to full districts. Their implementation requires information about current building energy demands, and how these demands, and the city's energy ecosystem at large, may change as a result of a specific urban intervention. Unfortunately, metered data is not available at a sufficient level of detail, and cities face an "information gap" between the aggregate scale of their emission targets, and the scale of implementation of energy strategies. To close it, municipalities and other interested stakeholders require modeling tools that provide accurate spatially and temporally defined energy demands by building. Urban Building Energy Models (UBEMs) have been proposed in research as a bottom-up, physics based, urban modeling technique, to estimate energy demands by building for current conditions and future scenarios. Given the large number of data inputs required in their generation, UBEMs have relied on their characterization through "building archetypes". Yet, in the absence of detailed building and energy data, this process has remained somewhat arbitrary, relying on deterministic assumptions and the subjective judgement of the modeler. The resulting simplification can potentially lead to predictions that misrepresent urban demands and misinform decision makers. In order to address these limitations and enable the large scale application of UBEMs, this dissertation introduces a set of modeling and calibration techniques. First, in order to demonstrate the feasibility of citywide municipal UBEMs, an 80,000 buildings model is generated and simulated for the city of Boston, based exclusively on currently available and maintained municipal datasets. An automated modeling workflow and a new library file format for archetypes are developed for that purpose, and current limitations of municipal datasets and practices are identified. To improve the reliability of UBEMs in reproducing metered demands, a new calibration approach is proposed, which applies principles of Bayesian statistics to reduce the uncertainty in archetype parameters defined stochastically based on a sample of metered buildings. The method is demonstrated and validated in the model of a residential district in Kuwait with 323 annually metered buildings, showing errors below 5% in the mean and 15% in the variance when compared with the measured EUI distribution. The accuracy of the resulting UBEM when reproducing EUI distributions is also compared with typical deterministic approaches, resulting in an error improvement of 30-40%. The method is expanded for its application when monthly energy data is available, and applied for the calibration of a sample including 2,662 residential buildings in Cambridge, MA. Finally, the relevance of calibrated archetype-based UBEMs in urban decisions is discussed from the perspectives of policy makers, energy providers, urban designers and real estate owners in two application cases in neighborhoods of Kuwait City and Boston.

Polarity in political ideologies within the Korea Peninsula has left a heavily militarized infrastructure, called the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The no man's land is a thickly belted corridor on the Korean peninsula that demarcates North Korea from South Korea, incorporating territory on both sides of the cease-fire line and being created by retreating 2km along each side of the line. For these political reasons, it has remained almost untouched for some six decades since the cessation of warfare in 1953, which has made it one of the most pristine undeveloped areas in Asia. While recent efforts to develop the DMZ into an ecology park are on the rise, this thesis is intended to seek a strategy for initiating a buffer city between the two Koreas. As is well known in the case of the Kaesong Industrial Park near the DMZ, operated as a collaborative economic development between South and North Korea, this territory has oscillated between shutdowns and reopenings because of political fluctuations. This thesis asks, what if a city in the DMZ confronts a political situation where it is impossible to secure permanent settlements? The thesis aims to propose a new urban archetype in which political ideologies are able to coexist along with their inevitable conflicts. The strategy of the proposition is two-fold. First, the DMZ city needs to accommodate two different political systems, communism and capitalism. This implies that the city should not be made of one consistent system. The second is that because of its extremely unstable military situation, the DMZ city needs to have a different city structure according to the change of political risks, repeatedly alternating between abandonment and reoccupation. Through the exploration of the DMZ, entangled with political issues under the pressure of uncertainty, this study has tried to explore a new archetype for the political city, the wall and enclave, where different ideologies are co-existing through revealing their conflicts.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe oceans and seas play a fascinating role in human culture and literature. This thesis examines the sea imagery in several Anglo-Saxon poems in order to gain a deeper understanding of the function the sea plays in the Anglo-Saxon literary psyche. These texts include Beowulf, Andreas, Exodus, as well as the shorter "Seafarer" and "Whale" poems. The first part of this thesis focuses on sea imagery at the word level, analyzing Anglo-Saxon morphology and lexical compounding as a key to the metaphorical content of sea-kennings. The second part expands this focus to a textual level, examining the symbolism of sea imagery in Anglo-Saxon literature as an anthropomorphic will-power, a habitat of the monstrous, and a place of heroic action. Finally, the last part will argue for an underlying cultural archetype of the sea, based on parallel passages and common themes involving the sea in Anglo-Saxon poetry.

Pełny tekst źródłaArt, myth, metaphors and archetypes can foster divergent thinking and serve as channels for integrating imagination and evocative ambiguity into traditional analysis and problem solving. New ways of representing ideas about homeland security not only provide vehicles for communication, but also expand and improve our ability to contemplate and understand this complex, emerging discipline. Through this paper and three original artworks, I argue for admitting art, imagination and the searching attitude of humanism into the domain of homeland security. I use the myth of Perseus and Medusa to focus on the mirrored shield as a metaphor for seeing ourselves as part of the predicament and for regarding the response not simply as solution, but as creative evolution. The metaphors we choose, consciously or unconsciously, to tell the story of homeland security will frame not only what we think but how we act and how we are perceived. Art is not frivolous. It is both mirror and shield, and allows us to move, stretch, and reach to transform reality. Art is forward leaning and operates in a non-linear or supra-linear process whose edges, mass, margins, and shadows expand the universe of possibilities and pre-suppose the existence of new forms.

Pełny tekst źródłaRitualized initiations are explored as having an important role in the breakdown of ego that is necessary for the growth and integration of components of the self once hidden in the shadows of the unconscious. In the modern world, the drive for linear growth and financial conquest has broken connection to archetypal, spiritual, and mythical guidance as well as to the numinous experiences that allow transformation. Through heuristic methodology, both depth psychological literature as well as broader media are considered to determine the importance of initiation for psychic growth and how a lost connection affects recent generations. This work shows that through the psychotherapeutic process, the therapist can provide the stage needed for a client in a transitional phase of life to safely break down and rebuild the ego structure necessary to move toward individuation.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis is based upon my artistic interaction and response to the 5,000-year-old myth of the Sumerian deity, Inanna. The main element of this thesis consists of a body of artwork that evolved out of the interweaving of textual, psychological, and artistic research. The artwork is an artist's response to a particular juncture in the descent portion of Inanna's myth . . . the moment of her transformation. This amalgamation of artistic and textual artifacts documents the power of an ancient story, from a long-dead culture, to reach through time and touch an individual life. The written documentation draws from diverse areas of study such as alchemy, mythology, depth psychology, women's spirituality, and women's studies. Through readings, conferences, workshops, one-on-one conversations, active imagination, and art-making I have woven together a glimpse, perhaps a momentary perspective, of an encounter with a divine feminine archetype. I am a visual artist and my lens is that of a 21st century woman and a maker-of-things. I gather, experience, and express my knowingness from this point of view and my thesis reflects my perspective.

Pełny tekst źródła“The literary fortune of the Cain-Abel couple seems to prove that the divine mark has worked”. It is around this quotation by Cécile Hussherr that my thesis revolves; that is, how a story that in the original text is just a few pages long – although we are talking about that Text, the Bible – has been able to give origin not only to a tradition, but also to a real literary myth whose germination in Western literatures is almost endless. However, what is particularly urgent in this study is to demonstrate how this myth did not originate from biblical sources, or rather, not only; but how it is actually just one of the most influent forms taken by what is, in my opinion, a virtually universal archetype. This research aims, therefore, to go beyond the “explicit” rewriting of the myth of Cain; I aspire instead to uncover the myth where it has penetrated more or less secretly and consciously. In my opinion, Cain’s story can be considered, together with that of Ulysses or Faust, a kind of monomyth. It is this consideration that moves the predilection for the archetypal criticism, as it was principally theorized by Northrop Frye in the second half of the last century. As it is rooted in psychoanalysis and cultural anthropology, this method can be considered “middle distanced” – not exclusively structured on close reading nor on a socio-historical or psychoanalytical analysis, but using all these instruments in concert. This dissertation is divided into three parts. The first part is dedicated to the definition of the fundamental characteristics of the paradigm I am analysing, guilt and wandering, from a socio-historical, religious, and psychoanalytical point of view. In the second part the examination of the texts under review begins; they are all novels written between 1940 and 1960. Here I take into consideration two English works of the ’40s, Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory (1940) and Malcolm Lowry’s Under the Volcano (1947), both characterized by the incarnation in the two protagonists of historical but also universal guilt; both of them are drunken outcasts, burdened by a sense of guilt and metaphysical and existential uncertainty, and they are destined to death. The third and last part is centred instead on novels written in the two countries which are perhaps the most “marked” by the Second World War: the German Der Tod in Rom (Death in Rome, 1954) by Wolfgang Koeppen, and Nobi (Fires on the Plain, 1951), a novel by the Japanese Ōoka Shōhei. In these works the paradox that can arise between guilt and sense of guilt is brought to its extreme manifestations, as it is between history and personal experience. [edited by author]

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis deals with the connection between mythology and psychagogy, and a structured way of reading and using myth for personal development is suggested. The myth of Demeter and Persephone is used for this purpose, and the text of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter is analysed as the basic (but not exclusive) text. In the modern world the psychagogic component relies on the work of Jung, which is seen as the most appropriate template available. His concept of the archetype is particularly useful, and the archetype of the mother goddess is analysed as a representation of the personal and spiritual development of modern women.

The clown is a popular and a banal figure at the same time, but there are primitive traces of his play. This work explores this art by many aspects: his principles, his history, his artists, his intercultural practice, his freedom, his poetry, his incomprehension, and his metamorphoses over time. It is an invitation to travel together in a world paradoxically very near, but still mysterious. The first part shows the artistc journey of the researcher influenced by the research and theoretical curiosity. These are fifteen years of clown lived in Brazil and intensified in Europe with the creation of four shows and the realization of several clown classes in Brussels. The return to Brazil is studied from funded projects. The second part opens on the etymology of the word clown opens this chapter which makes a possible relation of the trickster and the clown, than indicates a theoretical sketch about the clown from the sixteen century to the present day: from morality to actual clowns. The third part is about the game as a learning tool of the clown. There is the attempt to highlight the principles of the clown game and the pedagogical elements applied in Cia da Bobagem. The thesis shows that the practice of clowning allows a professional integration, that the theory amplifies the conception of clown through psychology, anthropology and history, and that the transmission of the clown game by the pedagogy of pleasure can be the other way to play and transmit the clown beyond suffering

Pełny tekst źródłaArchetypal psychology relativized the notion of ego and brought the notion of psyche as soul to the fore by highlighting Soul’s distinction from Spirit. Psychotherapy became a soul-making process, but Soul’s longing for union with Spirit and the ego’s longing for relationship with the Self was neglected. Using alchemical hermeneutics, this thesis investigates the bringing into consciousness of the repressed Spirit in depth psychology by reviewing literature in the broader field of psychotherapy and the personal experience of the writer that points to a love relationship between the opposites of Soul and Spirit, ego and Self. This thesis also puts forth a call for action within post-Jungian thinking toward an awareness of the dynamically poetic tension of opposites, and posits that the divine archetype of the Opposites is the primary animator of the production of the human mind, reintroducing Jung’s archetype of the transpersonal Self in a more relational manner.

s work. The thesis then asserts that some archetypal features occur almost obsessively and are further clearly implicated in the main themes of the trilogy. The central archetypal patterns that frequently appear in the novel are the hero'
s quest, return to paradise and rebirth. This dissertation is therefore primarily organised around these archetypes, and Beckett'
s use of these archetypal motifs to reinforce his black philosophy will be illustrated and exemplified in the study.

Interest in urban energy modeling has grown among planners and policy-makers as more and more municipalities set targets for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Urban-scale building energy models can help evaluate the efficiency of proposed district designs, consequences of building retrofit interventions, or energy supply options. Bottom-up models based on physical descriptions and engineering calculations are the most versatile for modeling scenarios and evaluating results at high spatial and temporal resolutions. Such urban building energy models (UBEMs) are typically created by grouping buildings with similar properties into archetypes, which standardize many properties that are not uniform in reality, such as occupancy-driven parameters. Since most UBEMs are validated using aggregated, annual measured data, this standardization is usually adequate; however, for a more accurate model that considers end-use differentiation or seasonal variation, neither this standardization nor this validation method are sufficient. This work proposes a new methodology for archetype definition and customization using metered monthly energy data. Customization is done by inferring certain parameters from the energy data and estimating others probabilistically from parametric analysis. The methodology is developed and tested on a case study of 453 low-rise residential buildings in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Four model iterations are compared: single template, eight archetype templates, eight archetypes with individual building customization, and the latter with the addition of parametric analysis and generation of frequency distributions for unknown parameters. The results show an improvement in mean goodness of fit from 46% with one template and 37% with eight templates to 18% for the final iteration. The distribution of energy use intensities, as well as monthly electricity and gas profiles, approach observed values closer with each iteration. The results also demonstrate that error metrics based on aggregated annual consumption, commonly used for urban model validation, are not necessarily representative of the model's fit on a monthly basis.

Abstract The Disappearing Archetype of Life --The Analysis of Oil Paintings by Yi-Zhong Gu The thesis reflects on the meanings of humanity, life value, and self existence; discusses the perception of life cycle and value transformation. Through the shapes of loofahs and citruses, he expresses the views of life and obtains the salvation by means of finding his own feelings of creative art works. The characteristic of the art works is to portray his feelings through the ways of concrete representation. The inspiration originates from the metaphysics, surrealism, besides the modern artists to contemporaries, As regards the form of the paintings, he endeavors to use the conception of the Orient “Chan”, meditation, to reinforce the loneliness and to expound the new explanation of still life paintings. The achievement of this is to discover the subconscious and to create distinctive vocabulary, by means of facing his past; to cull, define and frame from the objects, he develops his creative style, through the diversities of hues and the fun of skin textures; attempts to refine his own oil painting skills and to manifest his speciality so as to create his self style. Key words: Chan, symbol, surrealism, self existence

This research originated from the archetype theory of the author’s favorite feminist, psychologist, Ms. Carl Gustav Jung. According to the use of visual graphic language by the creation of art, this research is intending to combine two different theories one another to trace the most primary and profound part of a female life generated unconsciously. The contents of humans’ creations can be divided into two major categories: fingerprint series and reproduction series. Both of them are the original impulse of creativity through a female’s point of view. Furthermore, the female’s individualism will be another important topic to study. Instead of the description of a human’s body and appearance, the usage of the “fingerprint” is capable to mark the female’s life which is considered the representative of a code of creations. Simulating the laparoscopy to women’s reproductive system including womb, menses, vagina, pregnancy, delivery, etc, this research has transferred the picture of a real image into the expression of the abstract emotion in order to describe women’s experience of life, feelings, desire, and ideal. In addition, it has been also discussed about the physical, mental (as motherhood) and lived influence by the function of “reproduction” in this research. This thesis comprises four major parts. In chapter one, it has been introduced that the author’s development of her research method and structure in art is affected by feminism. The following chapter consists of the literature review about women’s life, characteristics, and the concept of the “archetype”. Moreover, the description of personal ideal, background and graphic language has been added in chapter three. At last, the author attempts to illustrate her unique opinion on modern life and living environment with her perspective, creations, formal analysis and comparison of personal works. It is also proposed in chapter four that to question and reconsider the restriction of fatherhood and to get beyond the limitation of the conflict between genders is the fundamental of reaching the ideal of trust, respect and love for both men and women.
