Intellectual Freedom for Teens is a short, easy-to-read introduction to the topic of intellectual freedom (IF). The book’s raison d’être is the fact that many young adult (YA) librarians deal with unexpected book challenges because a large proportion of the titles on ALA’s annual Frequently Challenged Books list are YA books that are popular among teens, used in classrooms, or both. The book aims to introduce librarians to the issues involved in championing for teens’ intellectual freedom rights, specifically the right to read.

So much recent attention has been focused on the need for quality books featuring diverse characters, themes and settings. While parents and teachers may look to annual book lists selected for the International Literacy Association’s Notable Books for a Global Society, the United States Board on Books for Young People’s Outstanding International Books, and the Jane Addams Peace Association’s Children’s Book Awards, there are several new trade books for young readers that seem perfectly poised to help readers explore the meaning of diversity as well as learn more about the wide world around them. Here are some recent favorites that explore some territory previously untrammeled.

Streszczenie:
Objective – To investigate the impact of collection size, student population, and faculty population on the use of an e-book collection. Design – Longitudinal quantitative analysis. Setting – Mid-sized public university located in Ontario, Canada. Subjects – Data from 79,821 e-books related to searches and viewings; data regarding number of e-books held, students enrolled, and faculty employed at institution. Methods – Numbers of e-books purchased individually and in packages were calculated, followed by the acquisition of annual student and faculty numbers through the University Institutional Planning Office. Searches for and viewings of e-books conducted via vendor websites were obtained directly from vendors. Data for all variables represent years 2002-2010. Main Results – Very high Pearson’s correlation coefficients of r = 0.96 for searches performed and r = 0.91 for viewings were found in relation to the number of e-books held. While the annual increase in number of viewings was at a rate similar to that of e-books available, a 7% decrease in searches and viewings occurred in 2010. In terms of user populations, doctoral students exhibited the strongest association with e-book collection size followed by undergraduate students and faculty. Conclusions – Based upon examination of correlation coefficients, the study concludes that the e-book collection size is closely associated with the level of e-book usage. The author notes that the data suggests use of the collection may possibly have leveled off, implying that additional large increases in the e-book collection could incur unnecessary expenditure. “Viewings per e-book” and “searches per e-book” ratios were highest when e-books were obtained on an individual title-by-title basis, though the author cautions that this does not necessarily prove that selective purchasing results in increased use. A deeper quantitative analysis into e-book usage and academic program size is considered for future research, as well as a comparison between electronic reference books and monographs. The author recommends that similar research be performed at other institutions of varying size to determine whether the study’s results would be replicated.

Appreciating the essential role of books in shaping the worldview of individuals, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia (LELB) and its pastors actively published books on Christian themes in the independent Republic of Latvia (1918–1940). Among them was the book series “Source of Writings” (Rakstu Avots) initiated and edited by a pastor, bibliophile, and librarian Gustavs Šaurums (1883–1952). Almost 90 titles of books were published in the series from 1933 until the Soviet occupation in the summer of 1940. The aim of the book series was to prevent the influence of “harmful” literature on society, offering good religious reading material instead. The research aims to determine the opinion of LELB pastors about the most important ethical values and reading material needed by society, as well as society’s attitude towards this literature. The main source of the research is the book set of the series. The bibliographic method (collection of bibliographic information about the book series and its analysis) used in the research allows us to ascertain the range of authors and works chosen by the publishers, the frequency of publishing, the circulation and other important characteristics of books. The text analysis method provides an opportunity to determine the essential ideas the publisher wanted to popularise and strengthen in society. The publishing frequency of the series (one printed work every month) and the consistently low price (the annual set cost one lat) are commendable. The annual sets of the series did have 12 issues, but they were small in size, modestly designed, and mostly printed in Gothic script (except for the children’s books, which were printed in antique type and usually illustrated). The works postulated a strong Christian faith and complete trust in God’s destiny as a fundamental ethical value. The works of the series, kept in the spirit of conservatism, did not take into account the complex life situation of the 20th-century individual, in which he had to face various spiritual, intellectual movements and growing secularism. The series gained attention only in the LELB environment.

Abstract Roli Books was set up in 1978 and tasted early success by bringing affordable, full-colour primary school textbooks to India. But the founder, Pramod Kapoor, followed through on his dream of creating indigenous, high-quality illustrated books for India, convinced that combining the content and editorial skills available in the country with international quality printing would be a winning proposition. Roli kept scaling up and expanded to multiple overseas markets while dealing with Indian policy challenges such as restrictions on third-country exports and the cap on book imports. After a challenging period in the late eighties and early nineties, Roli found success once again, buoyed by India’s economic liberalisation and the lifting of import restrictions. Since the late 2000s, Roli has invested in its domestic publishing programme, physical retail space, and annual exhibitions to build the brand. The next generation of the family continues to nurture and grow the company.

The committee was formed, among others, by men like S.H. de Roos and J.F. van Royen. The most productive years were the early ones: three books were published, a book exhibition was organised and three annual reports appeared. Gradually activity declined. There were no more annual reports and only one further booklet came out (1929). In March 1938 the Joan Blaeu Society was dissolved. At the same time a new society was founded: the Dutch Fine Printing Society, which was to be its successor of sorts.

Over the last ten years (2009-2018), the average number of modern Balinese literary books published reached 10.9 titles per year. This data is derived from the number of books nominated for the annual Rancage Literary Award over the last ten years. This research identifies and discusses opportunities and challenges in the development of the publication of modern Balinese literary books nowadays. The research focuses on identifying the supporting factors and challenges of the publication of modern Balinese literary books. Research methods applied in this study were library studies and limited ethnographic research through interviews, especially with stakeholders of modern Balinese literature including writers, readers and book agencies. Data were analyzed by Escarpit’s theory of sociology of literature that proposes the study of literature in the entire environment of literary creation, distribution and consumption. This study concludes that the provincial government of Bali, publishers, literary communities and authors all play an important role in overcoming challenges and taking advantage of opportunities for increasing the publication of modern Balinese literature. Streszczenie:
A broad statistical analysis of the book publishing industry over 1917–2017 is performed, with focus on the dynamics of industry indicators in 1991–2017. It is shown that throughout this period the average annual growth in the number of books and brochures produced by the book publishing industry made 620 units, or 5.13%. But the circulation had overall negative dynamics: its average annual decline made 3310 thousand, or 3.9%. The largest absolute decline in the circulation is recorded in 1993, 1999, and 2015. It is revealed that the per capita output in the industry was 1.5 books in 2013, 0.8 in 2015, and 1.1 in 2017. It is stressed that because books constitute a culture component and contribute in the moral enrichment of the society and book reading enhance the education level of a nation, the book supply of the population observed throughout the period of the Ukraine’s independence is unacceptable. A fact raising concern is that reading ranks fifth as a way of recreation in the Ukrainian society. It is demonstrated that the assumption about minor significance of a printed book in the digital era is fallacious and ungrounded. Transformations in science and technology, politics or economy have been persisting in Ukraine, but its people remain to be book readers. A book may change the format or production methods and materials, but a book is an integral attribute of the humanity. The events in Ukraine, both positive and negative, had strong impact on the development and change of socio-economic paradigms, which had implications for the book publishing industry. The development of any industry cannot be considered in isolation, by taking its dynamics off the context of socio-political processes and phenomena. It is shown that in the present-day conditions, when the living standards of the population are largely dependent on the salary rate or the household income, the need to purchase books had lower priority than meeting vital necessities of daily life. The importance of a further in-depth study of the external factors with impact on the industry development is stressed.

In this paper, data of almost 8 million loans of books recorded for 15 years by the Korea University Library are analyzed by using big data analytic techniques. During this period, book circulation decreased with an average annual rate of decline of 4.4%. The use factor of books in each Dewey decimal classification (DDC) class was evaluated to measure how efficiently books were used by library users. Loan frequencies of books were analyzed and meaningful results regarding loan concentrations and the half-lives of books were obtained. It was observed that 50% of the total loans in each year were for 20% of all borrowed books in that year. This phenomenon will be called the 20/50 loan rule, and the set of the top 20% most borrowed books, whose cumulative loan frequencies reach 50% of total loans, will be called a core collection. The 20/50 loan rule shows the loan concentration of library books. The extent of loan concentration gets stronger if loans for two or more consecutive years are concerned. It was found that with high probability, books in a core collection at a specific year are also categorized as a core collection in next years. Moreover, books categorized as a core collection in consecutive years have longer half-lives compared with all other circulating books.

Demers reminds readers of the joys of discovering books and stories for the first time and suggests that we should not forget that joy as adults, especially those of us who have chosen careers studying stories—either books or films or theatre—rather than just loving them as we did as children. As academics, critics, librarians, and the like, we begin to read new, sometimes forgotten writers, enter into the conversation about them and, if we are lucky, work our way into the kitchen to discover how their texts are made, finding ourselves on a journey “from curiosity, to revelation, to experimentation.”

Any library needs to be updated with reading collection as well as services to serve the user community. For this purpose, libraries are procuring books as well as non-book materials. Occasionally libraries may accept books on gratis from the donors. But it is essential to test whether this collection is integral or reduced, such as book theft or any other natural reasons like damage, etc. This is where stock verification is required. Stock verification is an important annual event in any library. This technique is used in any library for entails scanning the data with a barcode scanner, matching the scanned data with the library database, and creating a report using the MS Excel and any LMS, as described here. Generally during the summer break in May and June, the library undertakes a stock verification of its holdings. The limitations of traditional stock verification methods are also discussed in the study.

The project of creating a catalogue of Nordic collections holding artists’ books, initiated at ARLIS/Norden’s annual meeting in Helsinki in May 1996, was the starting point for a survey of the material held in Icelandic art libraries. This focused on the type and size of the collections of artists’ books in four art institutions covering twentieth century art in Iceland, and examined the current documentation standards applied to artists’ books in Icelandic collections and the extent of national bibliographic control.

I don't do much public writing, but each month I persuade others to do it in my role as the fiction editor in chief of public Books, a twice-monthly online review that I cofounded with Caitlin Zaloom in 2012. On the first and fifteenth of each month, Public Books publishes six to eight essays about books, nonprint works, the media, the arts, and ideas, written mostly by academics but also by journalists, novelists, activists, and artists. In addition to traditional reviews, we publish roundtables, interviews, visual essays, and Public Picks, our annual lists of best books and films.

Purchasing the E-books from the on-line bookstore is the trend that Amazon created this business model successfully. Miniwatts Marketing Group (2010) pointed that the internet penetration rate in Taiwan has been reached 70%. Amazon and Barnes and Nobel both claimed the revenue of e-books exceeded the books in 2010. The compound annual growth rate is nearly 72% in year 2008–2013. Therefore, there is a great need to investigate the cross-industry of publisher industry, hardware industry, and internet service platforms to integrate the picture of E-book industry in Taiwan. The qualitative research method will be used to interview the managers in the related leading companies in order to understand the “how to do and what to do” between each other to promote the digital products. By gathering the information to gain the knowledge for the reference to the related industries to work closely to benefit each other and expand the business scope. It is absolutely helpful to create a comfortable reading environment to satisfy the readers’ various needs.

Streszczenie:
Abstract India is the second-largest book market in the world for English-language content. Indian publishing, predominantly educational and 75 per cent in English, is growing at a compound annual growth rate. Tracing the business’s 75-year journey, this article highlights key phases and players that have shaped the way this industry looks today. Family businesses and international publishers have been an intrinsic part of the local publishing scene from the start. A large textbook market and growing general books market sustain them as new players continue to appear on the scene. The book-publishing ecosystem has historically included bookselling, distribution, and printing and in more recent times has expanded to edtech and telecoms. The COVID-19 experience has enhanced the need for collaborations in this ecosystem to sustain Indian publishing. Although the books market remains 90 per cent print, its sustainability requires e-resources that enhance, support, and test learning from these printed books. Finding suitable pricing models in a historically price-sensitive market is one of the key challenges. Government policy plays a key role in the direction and growth of Indian publishing. Tax, copyright, and education policies can pave the way for Indian publishing to be a research and skilling hub for this youthful nation.

[First paragraph]In devoting this essay to sancocho, we continue our tradition of annual book round-ups spiced with Caribbean culinary lore. Having already served up pepperpot and rundown from the Anglophone islands, migan from Martinique and Guadeloupe, and callaloo from all of the above, the time seemed ripe to turn to the Hispanic Caribbean. And as our list of books has expanded (from the forty to fifty of previous years to nearly one hundred in this installment), a dish with as many ingredients as sancocho seemed particularly appropriate.
