Streszczenie:
This chapter analyses the ways nineteenth-century Anglicanism has been studied by scholars. Three different traditions of historiography are identified and explored. The first approach is interested in internal ecclesiastical debates, in relations between Church and state, and in wider social change. A brief discussion of the historiography of the Oxford Movement illustrates how academic approaches to this topic have developed since the 1840s. The second approach is scholarly immersion in nineteenth-century Anglican theology, which remained influential for most of the twentieth century. However, it fell out of favour from the 1980s, as new styles of theology became more fashionable. The third approach is the study of Anglicanism outside the British Isles. This developed from a focus on mission history and the development of the Anglican Communion, to more recent appreciation of global Anglicanism, seeking to do justice to the experience of Anglicans, wherever they live in the world.

Streszczenie:
The Restoration brought a determination to revive the Elizabethan choral tradition of the cathedrals. There followed a second ‘golden age’ culminating in the work of Henry Purcell. The characteristic forms of anthem, service, responses, and chants were maintained, but the Hanoverian succession led to a decline in choral standards and a relatively undistinguished period of cathedral music. Meanwhile, parish churches relied chiefly on metrical psalms, sung in town churches by schoolchildren with organ accompaniment, and in country parishes by voluntary choirs and bands, often located in the west gallery. Anglican music was a powerful magnet for missions abroad. It also assisted many charities at home, such as the Foundling and Lock Hospitals. The growing number of choral festivals was a crowning expression of Anglican culture. They were also the seedbed for Handel’s oratorios. His many anthems and Te Deums celebrating special events set a new standard for Anglican ceremonial music.

Streszczenie:
The relationship between art and Anglicanism had many aspects. The chapter begins with a very brief exploration of clerical portraiture, religious satire, Bible illustration, and topographical prints. The rest is dedicated to the visual culture of the church interior. It surveys the use of ornament on fittings, including fonts and pulpits, before exploring the expanding repertoire for painting at the altar. The extent to which paintings of Moses and Aaron, the apostles, and subjects narrating the life of Christ were admitted to Anglican churches during the period may surprise. Over a thousand examples have been identified. Although many of them were lost during nineteenth-century campaigns of ‘restoration’, sufficient were recorded or survive to recover a just sense of the vivid visual culture of eighteenth-century Anglicanism. The chapter also offers some observations about the largely tacit system of visual decorum that operated to guard the Church from the dangers of idolatry.

Streszczenie:
This chapter examines the complex relationship between Anglicanism and Methodism. Revising the view that Methodism was an ever-separating movement, this chapter contends that the eighteenth-century Church of England was a varied body, with myriad challenges which it confronted through the maintenance of a pastoral ideal, lived out ‘on the ground’ by the parish clergy. The industrializing parish of Madeley, Shropshire (where the incumbent from 1760 to 1785 was the Revd John William Fletcher), is used as a case study. Together with Madeley, other examples of dutiful and evangelically minded clergy who utilized the experimental religion and religious irregularities often associated with Methodists or Dissenters, are surveyed. The chapter concludes that Fletcher and many evangelically minded Anglican-Methodist clergy found the Church of England sufficiently strong and flexible enough to do the work of the Church rigorously and creatively, and that Methodism could serve as a means of Anglican pastoral success.

Streszczenie:
This chapter examines the history of Anglicanism in Oceania. In particular, it demonstrates how Anglo-Catholic, High Church, and monastic expressions of Anglicanism were transposed to Melanesian and Polynesian contexts, producing a unique and evolving set of identities and practices. While a missionary posture of accommodation fostered the inculturation of worship rituals, liturgy, institutional structures, and theologies into indigenous forms, an accompanying paternalistic ethos delayed the creation of an indigenous Church and leadership. The chapter also highlights the crucial role of women and indigenous agency. Finally, the period after 1942 marked a decisive shift from colonial dependency to independent nationhood in places where Anglicanism had taken root. How Anglicans in the region negotiated the tension between tradition and modernity—in Church, society, and state—is a further salient theme of this chapter.
