AbstractApplications such as batteries, fuel cells, solar cells, and sensors, can benefit from high surface-to-volume ratio core/shell arrays of nanorods. The fabrication of the conformal shell layers on nanorod arrays has been a formidable task. In order to assess the deposition conditions for the production of conformal shell coatings by physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques, we employed Monte Carlo (MC) simulations that involved shell depositions under different flux distributions and angles on arrays of rods. We investigated the conformality of PVD shell layers on nanorod arrays of different aspect ratios, which is defined to be the ratio of rod height to the gaps between nearest-neighbor rods. MC simulated core/shell structures were analyzed for the thickness uniformity of the shell layer across the sidewalls of rods. Our results show that a small angle deposition approach involving a uniform oblique flux (U-SAD) with a small incidence angle ≤ 30o can generate a fairly conformal shell coating around small aspect-ratio rods. However, normal angle deposition with an angular flux distribution (A-NAD) achieves superior conformality both on small and high-aspect-ratio structures compared to U-SAD, conventional uniform normal angle deposition (U-NAD), and SAD with an angular flux distribution (A-SAD). A-NAD can be realized in a PVD system such as by high pressure sputter deposition; while U-SAD can be achieved in thermal evaporation system with a small angle incident flux. In addition, U-NAD and A-SAD can correspond to film growth by normal incidence thermal evaporation and SAD-high pressure sputter deposition, respectively.

In this article, we present a systematic investigation on a multistep nanosphere lithography technique to uncover its potential in fabricating a wide range of two- and three-dimensional nanostructures. A tilted (polar angle) electron beam shower on a nanosphere mask results in an angled shadow mask deposition. The shape of the shadow also depends on the azimuthal angle of the mask sitting on top of the substrate. We performed angled shadow mask depositions with systematic variation of these two angular parameters, giving rise to complex nanostructures (down to 50 nm), repeated over a large area without defect. In this article, nanosphere lithography with two- and four-fold azimuthal symmetry was studied at constant tilt angles followed by variations in tilt without azimuthal rotation of the substrate. Finally, both angular parameters were simultaneously varied. The structure of shadow crystals was explained using Matlab simulation. This work stretches the horizons of nanosphere lithography, opening up new scopes in plasmonic and magnonic research.

In this work, the influence of different deposition angles on the structural, chemical and magnetic properties of nickel (Ni) thin films was investigated. Nickel samples were deposited by glancing angle deposition technique at two different angles, 65o and 85o. Characterization of the thin films was carried out by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy. Structural analysis was found that the changes in the deposition angle have a great influence on the porosity of the film as well as on the amount of the present nickel oxide (NiO) in the samples. On the other hand, we have also found that different deposition angle changes the magnetic response of nickel film. The coercivity of the samples deposited at the angle of 85o is significantly higher compared to the samples deposited at lower angle which could be correlated with the higher porosity and the amount of NiO in the thin films.

The study aimed to determine an optimum angle for the nozzles axial-flow sprayers a deposition for better vertical distribution focused on cashew. In laboratory tests were conducted adjusting the angle of the nozzle axial-flow sprayers. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a 2x3 factorial with four replications. The treatment for this test were two settings (with and without the adjustment of the angles of the nozzles ) and tree application volumes 273, 699 and 954 L ha-¹.The study was conducted in an orchard of dwarf cashew, with eight years of age. It was concluded that the volumetric distribution profile showed better vertical distribution uniformity when the angles of the nozzles were regulated for the canopy, the adjustment of the angles of the nozzles for the canopy provided greater deposition of droplets, the increased volume of application resulted in higher depositions in the leaves of the crop.

A glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technique was used to generate SiO2 nanorods on a glass substrate to fabricate a low-cost superhydrophobic functional nanostructured surface. GLAD-deposited SiO2 nanorod structures were fabricated using various deposition rates, substrate rotating speeds, oblique angles, and deposition times to analyze the effects of processing conditions on the characteristics of the fabricated functional nanostructures. The wettability of the surface was measured after surface modification with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The measured water contact angles were primarily affected by substrate rotation speed and oblique angle because the surface fraction of the GLAD nanostructure was mainly affected by these parameters. A maximum contact angle of 157° was obtained from the GLAD sample fabricated at a rotation speed of 5 rpm and an oblique angle of 87°. Although the deposition thickness (height of the nanorods) was not a dominant factor for determining the wettability, we selected a deposition thickness of 260 nm as the optimum processing condition based on the measured optical transmittance of the samples because optically transparent films can serve as superhydrophobic functional nanostructures for optical applications.

The gold nanostructures fabricated on a substrate yield localized surface plasmon resonance. We describe the fabrication and characterization of nanocrescents on a silicon substrate, which are fabricated by depositing a gold film at an oblique angle through nanosphere lithography. Following the etching of the gold perpendicular to the substrate and the removal of the nanospheres by dissolution, nanocrescents with fine nanostructures are generated. By varying the deposition angle of the gold film from 0° to 72°, nanorings, 2D and 3D nanocrescents can be obtained. During the nanocrescent fabrication, we also compared the deposition angle difference between the e-beam and thermal evaporators for oblique depositions of the gold. The 3D nanocrescents fabricated in our experiments are expected to have improved sensitivity in localized surface plasmon resonance measurements when compared to the previously reported 2D nanocrescents, which enable broader biosensor applications. Simulations of the profiles of these 3D nanocrescents using solid geometry show good consistency with the fabricated ones.

Residual stresses of alumina thin film deposited on silicon substrate by using electron beam evaporation with oblique angle deposition (OAD) method are studied. The growth parameters that affect the residual stresses of alumina thin film, such as the substrate temperature, the deposition rate, the film thickness, the inclined angle, and the testing temperature are discussed. The results show that the tensile stress value decreases with the increasing substrate temperature, and the compressive stress value increases with the increasing substrate temperature at various inclined angles. Along with the deposition rate increasing, the residual stress value decreases at various inclined angles. With the increasing film thickness, the residual stress value decreases at various inclined angles. With the increasing testing temperature, the residual stress value increases at various inclined angles. While the alumina thin film residual stress value is small at high inclined angle. By choosing the appropriate film preparation parameters, the alumina thin film residual stress is effectively controlled.

Background: Oblique angle deposition is known for yielding the growth of columnar grains that are tilted in the direction of the deposition flux. Using this technique combined with high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) can induce unique properties in ferromagnetic thin films. Earlier we have explored the properties of polycrystalline and epitaxially deposited permalloy thin films deposited under 35° tilt using HiPIMS and compared it with films deposited by dc magnetron sputtering (dcMS). The films prepared by HiPIMS present lower anisotropy and coercivity fields than films deposited with dcMS. For the epitaxial films dcMS deposition gives biaxial anisotropy while HiPIMS deposition gives a well-defined uniaxial anisotropy. Results: We report on the deposition of 50 nm polycrystalline nickel thin films by dcMS and HiPIMS while the tilt angle with respect to the substrate normal is varied from 0° to 70°. The HiPIMS-deposited films are always denser, with a smoother surface and are magnetically softer than the dcMS-deposited films under the same deposition conditions. The obliquely deposited HiPIMS films are significantly more uniform in terms of thickness. Cross-sectional SEM images reveal that the dcMS-deposited film under 70° tilt angle consists of well-defined inclined nanocolumnar grains while grains of HiPIMS-deposited films are smaller and less tilted. Both deposition methods result in in-plane isotropic magnetic behavior at small tilt angles while larger tilt angles result in uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The transition tilt angle varies with deposition method and is measured around 35° for dcMS and 60° for HiPIMS. Conclusion: Due to the high discharge current and high ionized flux fraction, the HiPIMS process can suppress the inclined columnar growth induced by oblique angle deposition. Thus, the ferromagnetic thin films obliquely deposited by HiPIMS deposition exhibit different magnetic properties than dcMS-deposited films. The results demonstrate the potential of the HiPIMS process to tailor the material properties for some important technological applications in addition to the ability to fill high aspect ratio trenches and coating on cutting tools with complex geometries.

Abstract Nanocolumnar Co thin films growth by oblique angle deposition on Si substrate is experimentally studied. Formation of regular arrays of tilted Co nanocolumns has been observed at incidence angles more than 70°. It was found that the optimal conditions for nanostructuring are realized at the inclination angle 85°. As obtained films have magnetic anisotropy axis inclined to the substrate surface and oriented along nanocolumns. Such films might be perspective material for applications as a magnetic recording media for next generations of hard disks.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to explore the dependence of material properties and failure criteria for fused deposition modeling (FDM) polycarbonate on raster orientation. Design/methodology/approach – Tension, hardness and density measurements were conducted on a range of specimens at raster angles between 0 and 90° at 15° intervals. Specimens were manufactured so the raster angle was constant throughout each specimen (no rotation between adjacent layers). The yield strength, tensile strength, per cent elongation, elastic modulus, hardness and density of the material were measured as a function of raster angle. The orientation dependence of the properties was then analyzed and used to motivate a failure mechanism map for the material. Findings – The properties of the material were found to be highly orientation-dependent. The variations in mechanical properties were explained to first order using a failure mechanism map similar to those generated for fiber-reinforced composites. Originality/value – In addition to providing valuable experimental data for FDM polycarbonate, the study proposes micro-mechanisms of failure that appear to explain and capture the angular variation of strength with raster orientation. The fact that analysis methods which have been used for composites appear to apply to FDM materials suggests rich areas for future exploration.

In this study we contribute towards establishing the process-microstructure relationships in thin films grown off-normally by ionized physical vapor deposition. High power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) is used at various peak target powers and deposition rates to grow copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) films from a cathode placed at an angle 90 degrees with respect to the substrate normal. Films are also deposited by direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS), for reference. Scanning electron microscopy is employed to investigate column tilting and deposition rate while X-ray diffraction techniques are utilized to study crystal structure and grain tilting. It is demonstrated that the columnar structure of Cu tilts less with respect to the substrate normal as the peak target power increases, which has been shown to correspond to a higher ionization degree of the sputtered material [1]. One explanation for this is that the trajectories of the ions are deflected towards the substrate and therefore deposited closer to the normal, as has been suggested in the literature (see e.g. [2]). Energetic bombardment by ions might also increase surface mobility, which further raises the columns. It is also concluded that the change in tilting is not caused by a lower deposition rate obtained when employing HiPIMS. The same is not seen for Cr, where all deposited films exhibit the same tilting angle. When the column tilting of Cu and Cr is compared a large difference is observed, where the columns of Cr are closer to the substrate normal. The reasons for this difference are discussed in light of nucleation and growth characteristics in the two materials. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that Cu films exhibit an (111) fiber texture. Comparison of films grown by DCMS and HiPIMS shows that in the HiPIMS cases the grains are closer to the surface normal and better oriented with each other. In the case of Cr both DCMS and HiPIMS grown films are (110) biaxially aligned.

Nasal sprays used for the treatment of cold and allergy symptoms use same device and formulation in children and adults. Owing to the obvious differences in nasal cavity dimensions between adults and children, the performance of nasal sprays products in children needs to be critically assessed. In an effort to evaluate the deposition patterns of nasal sprays administered to children, a nasal cast based on MRI images obtained from a 12-year-old child’s nasal cavity was developed using 3D printing technology. Glycerin-water mixtures providing sprays with a range of plume angles (26° - 62°), along with three additional commercial nasal sprays, were investigated by actuating the device into the cast under controlled conditions. Following spray administration, the cast was disassembled and subjected to image analysis followed by quantification of formulation deposition in each section of the cast using both chemical and image analysis. The results showed that nasal sprays impacted entirely in the anterior region of the 12-year-old child’s nasal cavity and limited amount of spray entered the turbinate region – the effect site for most topical drugs. Additional experiments were conducted to measure the deposition patterns of nasal sprays in the presence of a mucus layer on the surface of the nasal cast. In an effort to make the nasal deposition studies more relevant to human nasal conditions, the mucus coated nasal cast was tilted in order to induce a physical movement of the mucus layer from the anterior region to the nasopharynx. The presence of mucus did not result in a significant increase in the turbinate region deposition but tilting of the mucus coated nasal cast resulted in 20% - 40% deposition in the turbinate region, improving the posterior region deposition of sprays. Even with the enhanced posterior movement nearly 60% of the spray formulations remained in the anterior region, a site with poor absorption characteristics. The computational fluid dynamic simulations evaluated the impact of multiple parameters including plume angle, droplet diameter and administration conditions on the deposition of nasal sprays in the 12-year-old child’s nasal cavity. The simulations showed significant anterior deposition for all plume angles (10° – 50°) and droplet diameters (30 µm – 400 µm) tested, similar to the observations from the in vitro experiments. An additional parameter, the direction of nasal spray actuation in the nasal cavity, was identified as a critical factor improving the turbinate region deposition of sprays in the 12-year-old child’s nasal cavity in spite of the narrow nasal valve region.

As emerging chiral metamaterials, plasmonic nanospirals (NSs) show strong optical activity that is expected to enhance the enantiodiscrimination of chiral molecules or help in the design of a new generation of integrated optical devices. The study of the optical activity of plasmonic NSs is still in its infancy, and no analytical model exists to describe their chiroptical mechanism. In this study, numerical and analytical simulations are devised to investigate the optical activity of plasmonic NSs that are generated by glancing-angle deposition. The findings will pave the way for the development of novel optical and optoelectronic devices with integrated functions. The CD spectrum of a closely packed random AgNS array has two CD peaks in the UV and visible regions with opposite signs. The pitch-normalized CD in the UV regime tends to be independent of the helical pitch, but that in the visible regime decreases in amplitude as helical pitch increases. The difference can be explained using an analytical LC circuit model and finite-element method simulation. The LC circuit model is used to quantitatively evaluate the chiroptical contribution. It is revealed that radiative loss makes an important chiroptical contribution to the two CD modes and that the visible CD mode receives a greater contribution from radiative loss than does the UV CD mode. Finally, the heterochiral biaxial AgNS arrays alter the sign of the visible CD by switching the incident direction, which shows that the arrays can function as circular polarizers in the visible regime. Furthermore, when AgNSs are deposited on a polymer substrate coated with indium tin oxide, the chiroptical flexible thin film has excellent chiroptical stability when exposed to forward mechanical bending, paving the way for the development of flexible or wearable chiroplasmonic devices.

The 2007–08 global financial crisis proved that the interests of bank depositors are inadequately protected. Although a vast expansion in deposit protection systems around the world followed, our understanding of the impact of those systems and their interaction with bank resolution is still in its infancy. The focus of bank resolution studies has been on the largest systemically important banks, which have wholesale creditors who would be bailed in, leaving retail depositors untouched. However, many banks rely mostly on deposits for financing, and the number of banks of this form is expected to increase. This book aims to explain and provide current material analysis of deposit protection and bank resolution regimes. The analysis is based on an examination of the traditional rationales for creating deposit insurance and bank resolution, and a specific study of the UK, EU, and US legal frameworks. It aims to offer an analysis of this topic and to cover all relevant regulations, from its origins to its most recent developments, in a systematic and thorough way. It approaches the much-desired objective of financial stability from a different angle: that of depositor protection. This book comprises ten chapters, analysing: the rationales for creating a deposit protection system; the limitations of deposit protection systems; the European deposit insurance framework; the European banking union; recent cases on deposit guarantee schemes; international standards on deposit insurance; the UK deposit insurance framework; international and European regulatory developments on bank resolution; the UK Special Resolution Regime; and the US paradigm.

AbstractAdditive Manufacturing has proven to be an economically and industrially attractive process in building or repairing parts. However, the major issue of this new process is to guarantee a mechanical behavior identical to the subtractive manufacturing methodologies. The work, presented in this paper, is centered on the Laser Wire Metal Deposition (LMD-w) method with the metallic alloy TA6V. Its working principle is to fuse a coaxial wire on a substrate with a laser as a heat source. To better understand the interaction between the input parameters (Laser Power, Wire Feed Speed and Tool Speed) and the clad geometry output variables (Height, Width and Contact Angle) and the substrate displacement, we have realized an experimentation. We printed 9 clads according Taguchi’s experimental design. Pearson correlation coefficient and Fisher test performed on the experimental measures showed as main result: Tool Speed is the parameter with the most significant influence on the output variables.

Abstract This paper introduces the fabrication of wafer-long nanowires using glancing angle deposition (GLAD). GLAD is an advanced physical vapor deposition technique, and it has the unique advantage of creating three-dimensional nanofeature arrays, compared to conventional top-down nanofabrication techniques. Various nanofeatures created by GLAD have been reported, including pillars, springs, chevrons, ribbons, and those structures as templates for creating nanoporous membranes; this paper fills the gap by presenting the creation of nanowires by GLAD. This paper describes the fabrication process by introducing the seeding scheme of corrals. The seed design for GLAD adopts the design rules of corrals of line seeds, and the GLAD parameters are determined by the design of the corrals of line seeds. In the experiment, conventional photolithography is used for creating micro-level widths and heights and wafer-length of line seed corrals. Two GLAD sessions with the target material for the nanowires and the mask material are deposited on the substrate in sequence with different azimuth angles; the nanowires are obtainable by anisotropic etching and removal of the sacrificial layer of corrals of line seeds. The design of the corrals of line seeds and the control of the size of the nanowires are discussed. The nanowires created are potentially applied in sensing applications, for example, the palladium or platinum nanowires can be used for hydrogen sensing.

Abstract A typical feature of cold spray process is that a deposit can be formed without change of the original structure and compositions of spray materials. Only particles which reach the velocity higher than the critical velocity can be deposited on a substrate in cold spraying. When the spray particle impacts on the substrate at an off-normal angle, the normal component of particle impact velocity will change with the approaching angle of spray particle to substrate. In the present study, copper and titanium powders are used to deposit coating using cold spray process at different impact angles with regard to substrate. The deposition characteristics of spray materials are examined. The results show that the impact angle has a significant influence on the deposition characteristics. The relative deposition efficiency changes with the spray angle. It has been found that there is a critical impact angle at certain particle conditions below which no deposition occurs. The relation between spray angle and relative deposition efficiency can be divided into three spray angle ranges: maximum deposition angle range, transient angle range and no deposition angle range. In the transient angle range, the relative deposition efficiency increases with an increase in spray angle from zero at the critical spray angle to 100%. The transient angle range depends on the particle velocity distribution. A model is proposed to explain the relation between the spray angle and the relative deposition efficiency.

The issue of overlapping or intersection in the toolpath is an issue in the metal deposition as the material is continuously added to the previous layer. Using various control schemes can achieve a better quality. However, such schemes fail to delivery satisfactory results when there are different intersection angles in the deposition toolpath. In order to overcome the problem caused by the intersection angle, the effect of them on the deposition should be well studied. This paper discusses the effect of toolpath intersection angle using design of experiment method. The impact of various parameters in the deposition process is studied. The approach and method can be integrated with path planning for a metal deposition process.
