An analysis of American independent cinema from 1990 until 2007, with an emphasis on these films? relationship to the Remarriage Comedies of the 1930s and 1940s. There is a uniquely American tendency to use cinema to reevaluate marriage that was most clearly evident in the Remarriage Comedies of the 1930s and 1940s, this thesis contends that this tendency has emphatically reemerged in American independent cinema since 1990. Using detailed analyses of films that most clearly evidence the persistence of this theme, this thesis explores, in-depth, four films: Hal Hartley?s Trust (1990), Richard Linklater?s Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), and Aaron Katz?s Quiet City (2007). These four films combine to form a coherent vision of a new perspective on romantic coupling, uniting to together show what they are rebelling against, what their new relationships should be built upon, and, finally, what the new kind of relationship that they present can look like. The definitively American theme that is delineated in these four films not only forms a clear connection to the history of American cinema, but also shows how new generations approach the essential questions implicit in coupling and marriage.

Företagets inledandetankegångar och idéer kring produkten framgick och arbetet påbörjades.Under arbetets gång följdes Fredy Olssons anvisningar i hur en teknisk rapport ska se ut. Alltinleddes med en brainstorm och kundundersökning. Kundundersökningens resultat mynnadeut i en kravprofil, till denna tillkom även Evonovas krav och önskningar. Kravprofilenanvändes när vi sållade ut lösningar från brainstormen.Vidare använde vi oss av idéerna vi fått fram och arbetade fram CATIA-modeller på möjligaförslag. Dessa mättes, gjordes om samt blev utvärderade av företaget. Enbart två modeller,hjärtat och droppen, ansågs tillräckligt tilltalande av uppdragsgivaren.Den slutgiltiga lösningen gjordes det en prototyp av som togs till företaget och UTEXPO.

“A Furnace Without Angels” is a hybrid work of poetry and non-fiction prose essays revolving around a crisis of faith. With the speaker’s brain always in a state of impending apocalypse, information— biological, personal, spiritual— is filtered down through a Biblical syntax, struggling to form an equation that results with ‘but you should live anyways.’ The poems lean toward imagination— the abstract, the surreal. The non-fiction prose flits between academic interest and attempts to recontextualize a fading belief in God. It’s hard to say if anyone wins.

This thesis seeks to elucidate the role angels play in the narrative of Matthew’s Gospel by investigating how angel traditions have contributed to his portrait of Jesus. Angels have been significant in Christological research due to their primary function as messengers and mediators between heaven and earth. However, their role in the Gospel narratives has been largely unexplored. Matthew, in particular, demonstrates a noteworthy interest in angels through the handling of his sources, his redaction, and addition of unique material. Utilizing the Old Testament and sources from the Second Temple period to illustrate the variety of angel traditions, this study seeks to identify how these traditions are reflected in Matthew’s Gospel and to interpret the passages in which angels appear or are represented. As a result, the majority of this study consists of a detailed exegesis of the passages that specifically mention angels. Each reference is critically analyzed in view of its role in the Gospel’s narrative and in light of Matthew’s redactional hand. In addition, discussion of relevant traditions of angels accompanies each chapter in order to illustrate how Matthew’s use of angels has facilitated his Gospel’s message. The thesis concludes that Matthew’s narrative includes angel traditions for three reasons. First, through his emphasis on the angels’ agency, Matthew advances his portrait of Jesus the Son of Man as an authoritative eschatological judge. Second, angels appear at significant moments in the narrative, expressing God’s presence in the life of Jesus. Finally, angels contribute to the apocalyptic cosmology of Matthew’s worldview.

This study is concerned with business angels’ investments process and which aspects in their choice of target firms are considered important in that process. The problem statement of this thesis is; what aspects play a role in Business angels’ investment decision, and in what way? How do these aspects affect business angels when making investment decisions, and why? The aim subsequently is concerned with discerning what is most important for business angels when choosing their target firms and how business angels make their investment decisions. We also aim to be able to create a deeper understanding of business angels, and contribute to small entrepreneurial firms in their search for financiers. Our research can provide information on how entrepreneurs can attract business angels.

The study is created with previous studies as a framework, and a wide selection of studies have been used. These have been examined and issues which in those studies have been found to be important for business angels have been reviewed and accounted for in the theory chapter.

The approach we used for data collection was through qualitative interviews with the use of an interview guide. This is explained by our aspiration to understand business angels’ investment criteria rather than describe them. Due to this, the view of interpretivism along with constructionism was taken on when constructing the interviews and findings. The respondents were found through business angels networks, and the selection of business angels entailed a fair representation of the researched group. This thesis has been conducted in an academically correct manner, and the results are validated and confirmed by the respondents.

The results we came to from our interviews were that the entrepreneur was most important for business angels in their evaluations, but other aspects also played a role. We analyzed our results with the use of our theory section and hence could see that some things we had come up with were unique, whilst some findings confirmed previous studies. We found that many business angels turn down investments due to their lack of time, which was a rather new emphasize for this study. Some qualities of the entrepreneur the business angels required were that they needed to be sales oriented and not overly optimistic about the future returns and prosperity of their ventures. We have shown that if entrepreneurs are overly optimistic about the value of their own firm it is likely that they will lose the deal. This was also of interest as it has not been stated as clearly in previous studies.

We conclude the thesis by giving advice to entrepreneurs and business angels, what future business angels should keep in mind and also what entrepreneurs should know before they involve themselves with business angels.

This study relates my experience as a new Head of English, facilitating Information Communication Technology Professional Development promote innovative practice in a secondary school. It describes my journey, learning about leadership and change management. I trialled initiatives in an attempt to promote a more constructivist teaching and learning culture within the department. The story documents English teachers' Information and Communication Technology skills, knowledge and understandings in using ICTs in their classes and examines to what extent and in what ways their beliefs impact on the design of their classroom learning environments. The literature review examines the impact of ICT on teaching and learning, online learning, ICT professional development, and leadership. Computer access, reliability, time and the teachers' pedagogy (geared to high stakes assessment) were identified as barriers to the implementation of ICT initiatives. Leadership in times of change requires a reflective process which promotes collaboration. An inflexible approach, as outlined in this study, fosters resistance.

Esta dissertação analisa a actividade dos business angels em Portugal e o impacto do Programa COMPETE na criação de novas empresas e de novos postos de trabalho. Este programa, criado em 2010, inclui uma linha de co-investimento aos business angels, destinado ao apoio e criação de novas empresas com elevado potencial tecnológico. Neste estudo, encontramos fortes evidências de que esta linha de financiamento estimulou a actividade empreendedora em Portugal. Usando uma base de dados, de preenchimento obrigatório, que inclui todas as empresas privadas em Portugal, seleccionamos dois conjuntos de dados transversais, colhidos antes e depois do Programa COMPETE. Usando o método das diferenças-em-diferenças, observamos que o programa está associado a um aumento de onze novas empresas, principalmente entre as pequenas empresas, e também a um aumento de quatro novos postos de trabalho em start-ups, embora este último efeito não seja significativo. Adicionalmente, através da recolha de dados sobre a forma de um questionário, analisamos as principais características dos business angels Portugueses e avaliamos a sua propensão a investir. Observamos que os business angels portugueses são predominantemente indivíduos do sexo masculino, com idade compreendida entre os 40 e 60 anos, com formação universitária, geralmente nas áreas de ciências empresariais e da economia. Também observamos que apresentam experiência empreendedora, na gestão e em consultoria. Em relação à propensão a investir, observamos que os business angels portugueses têm uma probabilidade positiva para investir acima dos 50.000 euros/ano e investem com uma frequência semestral ou anual.
This dissertation analyzes the business angels activity in Portugal and the impact of the COMPETE Program on firm entry and job creation. This program, created in 2010, includes a co-investment fund for business angels to support the creation of new ventures with innovative potential. There is strong evidence that this financing line has stimulated entrepreneurial activity in Portugal. Using a mandatory database which includes all private firms in Portugal, we select two cross-sectional datasets, collected before and after the COMPETE Program. Through a difference-in-differences approach, we observe that this program is associated with an increase of eleven new firms, primarily among small firms, and an increase of four employees per start-up, although the later effect is not significant. Additionally using data collected through a questionnaire, we analyze Portuguese business angels? main characteristics and evaluate their propensity to invest. We found that Portuguese business angels are predominantly middle-aged male with university education, usually in the fields of business sciences and economy. They also have entrepreneurial, managerial and consulting prior experience. Regarding their propensity to invest, we find that Portuguese business angels have a positive probability to invest up to 50,000 euros/year and they often invest semiannually or annually.

Stuart Hall, who passed away in February 2014, was one of the founding figures of what is known today as ‘cultural studies’ and long-time director of the renowned Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham. In addition, he was a central figure of the British New Left, founding editor of the journal New Left Review, and one of Britain’s most charismatic public intellectuals. Crucially, for Hall, intellectual practice was a politics, and questions of culture were political questions. His was a thinking that was inquisitive, flexible and open-ended, regularly moving across disciplinary boundaries and synthesising different theoretical outlooks. It was rigorously contextual, extremely attentive to complexity, dedicated to the concrete, activist, committed and practical, and driven by a curiosity that constantly led onto new – and frequently largely uncharted – theoretical terrain. The subjects covered by Hall’s work include topics as diverse as popular culture and mass media; representation and signifying practices; subcultures; questions of power, ideology and resistance; ‘race’ and ethnicity; globalisation; multiculturalism and diaspora; cultural and personal identity; Thatcherism; New Labour; and neoliberalism. The present issue of Coils of the Serpent endeavours to contribute to the timely exploration of the legacy of Stuart Hall’s highly influential and multi-faceted work.

This dissertation thesis concentrates on Venture Capital in the form of Business Angel investments in innovative companies in the Czech Republic. Primarily, the general knowledge of the Business Angel investments among entrepreneurs and students, the utilization rate of angel investments and the terms of cooperation between investors and entrepreneurs were analyzed. The main objective of this work is to design a methodological procedure of optimal cooperation between Business Angels and innovative entrepreneurs that has had a positive impact on the prosperity of all stakeholders. The theoretical framework summarizes the importance of Venture Capital as a source of funding new and innovative technology companies. Moreover, it focuses on realized research concerning angel investment in the USA and Great Britain. The primary research was realized in the form of interviews with investors and entrepreneurs, who had raised capital from Business Angels. As well, was realized five year long research among the students of universities all over the Czech Republic via questionnaire. Based on the analysis of secondary research and results from qualitative and quantitative research, were designed a normative model, descriptive model and methodology of cooperation between Business Angels and entrepreneurs. The proposed models and methodology respect the international practice, and the outputs have been tailored to the Czech environment as well.

The creative work, Black-Winged Angels, is a collection of nine re-written fairytales. The collection is divided into three sections: Maiden, Mother, Crone and the three stories in each section explore various aspects of these traditional periods in a woman's life. The tales are re-written, or 're-loaded', to offer alternative views of the tales of childhood, to examine other forces that may be at work inside the stories themselves, and the possible consequences of 'living' those tales differently. The exegesis examines the colonisation and reclamation of a range of fairy tales. It traces the historical shift from oral to literary fairy tale traditions, and the ensuing patriarchal rewriting of those fairytales. The exegesis then considers the writing of Angela Carter and Emma Donoghue (specifically The Bloody Chamber and Kissing the Witch, respectively), in terms of how their work in the fairytale genre has both succeeded in, and failed to, avoid a simple inversion of gender with their revisions of the colonised literary fairytales. The exegetical work has grown, in large part, out of the process of critical reflexivity to which I have subjected my creative work. I chose Angela Carter's and Emma Donoghue's works of revisionist fairytales to act as 'bookends' for my own work; Carter as a starting point for fairytale reclamation and Donoghue as a more recent incarnation of the fairytale revisionist. In reflecting on my own work, I often looked back at what these two authors had done, to guide me in the eternal writers' struggle of what to leave in, what to leave out, and where to take the tale.

Business angels invest directly in unquoted companies managed by someone else who is not a relative and represent an important source of funds for new start-ups (~1.0% of GDP according to the GEM). This doctoral thesis addresses and contributes in two issues in business angels’ research, the disparity of definitions and contradictory evidence on business angels screening criteria in previous literature. The research identifies and discusses 10 definitional issues, investigates how definitional choices are driven by sampling methodologies and to what extent they impact study results. The review of 24 previous studies proves that there are multiple definitions, often chosen due to the sampling methodology employed and that the use of inconsistent definitions leads to study different population of investors with different results. The study advocates for a consensus definition, preferably wide, and proposes a framework to advance towards that. Based on statistical analysis of a database of 215 projects and using three different sources to avoid bias (investor, entrepreneur and project documentation), the research concludes that the screening phase is critical within the investment process (45% rejection rate) and that success is driven by presentational skills, rather than the business opportunity or the entrepreneurial team. Sector, development stage and macroeconomic environment do not influence investment criteria. At the initial screening, business angels take their decisions based on intuitive and intangible aspects, rather than on rational considerations and tangible elements, such as the business opportunity or the entrepreneurs’ credentials. The comparison of results with previous research based on investors recollections, rather than actual behaviour, suggests that investors are not fully aware of the criteria they effectively use. In the informal venture capital market, investment process inefficiencies are as important as market inefficiencies (lack of information or investment projects) previously researched. The findings should lead to assess the measures of support for business angels implemented to date, based on data on big investors, to target smaller investors on issues of diversification, continuity of investment history and avoiding investment process inefficiencies.
Els inversors privats o business angels inverteixen directament en empreses cotitzades gestionades per un tercer no familiar i representen una de les fonts principals de fons per noves empreses (~1.0% del PIB segons el GEM). La tesi aporta en dos punts de la recerca en inversors privats; la disparitat de definicions i l’evidència contradictòria sobre els seus criteris de filtratge de projectes. La recerca identifica i argumenta 10 problemes de definició, investiga com la tria de definicions està influïda per la metodologia de mostratge emprada i com impacta al seu torn en els resultats. La revisió de 24 estudis anteriors demostra que hi ha múltiples definicions, a vegades escollides en funció de la metodologia de mostreig i que l’ús de definicions inconsistents porta a diferents resultats. L’estudi defensa una definició de consens, preferiblement àmplia, i proposa un marc conceptual per facilitar-ho. Basant-se en l’anàlisi estadístic d’una base de dades de 215 projectes i utilitzant 3 fonts diferents per evitar biaix (l’inversor, l’emprenedor i la documentació del projecte), la recerca conclou que la fase de filtratge inicial és crucial dins del procés d’inversió (45% taxa de refús) i que l’èxit en la fase de filtratge depèn sobretot de les habilitats presentacionals enlloc de l’oportunitat de negoci o de l’equip emprenedor. El sector d’activitat del projecte, el desenvolupament o l’entorn macroeconòmic no influeixen en els criteris d’inversió. En la fase de filtratge inicial els inversors prenen les seves decisions basant-se en la intuïció i aspectes intangibles, enlloc de consideracions racionals i elements tangibles, com l’oportunitat de negoci o les credencials de l’emprenedor. La comparació amb resultats d’estudis anteriors basats en els inputs dels inversors suggereix que els propis inversors no són totalment conscients dels criteris utilitzats efectivament. En el mercat de capital risc informal, les ineficiències del procés d’inversió són tan importants com les ineficiències de mercat (falta d’informació o falta de projectes) investigades anteriorment. Les conclusions haurien de portar a revisar les polítiques de suport als business angels implementades fins ara, definides a partir de grans inversors, per abordar inversors més petits amb problemes de diversificació, continuïtat de l’activitat inversora i ineficiències en el procés inversor.

What psychologial processes are activated in experiencing mourning after a loss of a belovedperson? How is death described in other authors’ novels and short stories compared to mine? This essay aims at analysing my two short stories The follower and The price for love fromdifferent aspects. I discuss the psychological realism and the spirituality using the method ofclose reading, interpreting and applying ideas of texts from other authors in my short stories. Death is a central phenomenon in both of my texts. Therefore I discuss death frompsychological and philosophical aspects in this essay. To get a philosophical frame of death Iturn to Jacques Derrida, Emmanuel Levinas and Martin Heidegger. They express different opinions but important to point out is their truism that death is waiting for us all. Then I turn to Sigmund Freud, Ann-Kristin Lundmark and Lars Rönnmark to get the psychological view of death. Because of the character of the texts, I use concepts of mourning and losses from Sigmund Freud, Barbro Lennéer Axelson and Lars Rönnmark. I discuss the characters, their inner psychological processes, and relationships between persons. In this essay I indicate that mourning is a natural reaction to the loss of a beloved person. The usual mourning often follow four phases. The first phase is the chock phase, then comes the reaction phase, followed by the process phase. Finally comes the reorientation phase. The religious aspect of the stories is also explored. There my starting point is authors as Staffan Ljungman and Inger Waern, who discuss the occurrence of angels in human beings lifes. The narrator in The follower is a guardian angel, something that makes the question ofangels interesting to study. The reality aspect in the short stories is also discussed in this essay. I turn to James Wood and compare his ideas and hypotheses with my texts. James Wood present the importance of giving the reader an appearance of reality and creating vitality of the literary characters. My stories are planted in a realistic environment, the characters act and react the way real people could do in their culture and epoch. Their mourning is also similar to what human beings could experience. Therefore I come to the conclusion that my stories could regard realistic for some readers but not to other. My intention is to give the reader an atmosphere of probability. If I success is both depending on the way I send my messages as well as on the way the reader receives it. I use no special school of philosophy or psychology to analyse these texts. I analyse from the point of view of a social worker. My own conclusion of this essay is that relationships are important in my stories, as well as a capability of mourning. The religious facet is an attempt to raise the question of a possible invisible world.

O objetivo desta dissertação é discutir por que indivíduos homoeroticamente inclinados, em especial gays, são socialmente interpretados como monstros. Através da análise de dois personagens gays da peça Angels in America, de Tony Kushner (Joe e Prior), e apoiado por um clássico monstro literário, o personagem sem nome de Mary Shelley em Frankenstein, busco demonstrar os mecanismos sociais que transformam os gays em seres abjetos. Entrementes, conduzo minha análise por dogmas cuidadosamente construídos e pelas instituições de poder que escrutinam e tentam controlar as sexualidades desviantes. Em última instância, vejo a transgressão como um passo necessário que garante aos gays o direito à realização pessoal (que deveria ser inalienável para todos os indivíduos), e a única saída para a expressão de suas verdadeiras subjetividades sexuais
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss why homoerotically inclined individuals, especially gay men, are socially construed as monsters. Through the analysis of two gay characters out of Tony Kushners Angels in America (Joe and Prior), and supported by a classical literary monster, the nameless character in Mary Shelleys Frankenstein, I try to point out societys mechanisms that transform gays into abjected personas. Meanwhile, I conduct my analysis through carefully constructed dogmas and the institutions of power that scrutinize and attempt to control deviant sexualities. Ultimately, I see transgression as a necessary stand for gays to guarantee their right to self-fulfillment (which should be unalienable to every individual), and the only way to the expression of their true sexual subjectivities

The aim of this thesis is the real representation of the company's business Auqa Angels EUROPE s.r.o. - a brief description of each area inside the company, know-how, product description, pricing and insight into the distribution system and the importance of sales personnel in the company. The author is concerned with the individual marketing activities of this small company and evaluate their effectiveness. Furthermore, this work aims at a competitive comparison in the Czech market with bottled water and evaluate the awareness of the brand and its positioning among consumers. The basic hypothesis is low Aqua Angels brand awareness among consumers thanks non wholesale marketing activities and narrow target group and pessimistic view of the drinking regime of Czech population. Part of this thesis is also the overall assessment of the current situation of Aqua Angels EUROPE s.r.o. and recommendation of appropriate workable solutions in areas where deficiencies are determined.

A House With No Angels is a novel that is narrated by three women: Ade, Elizabeth and Kutes. Following the death of Peter they arrange to travel to Nigeria to bury him. However, his death has sparked an array of emotions that each woman works through, culminating in revelations that shake them. Set against a political backdrop from the 5th Pan African Conference in 1945, to the black power movement and current day asylum, each of the women maps out her own story. This thesis offers an insight into the ways in which research influenced creation of the novel, A House U7ith No Angels, and charts the changes in direction as the creative process continued through drafting. The Introduction gives an overview of the novel and the process of decision making involved. Chapter One examines the research element of the novel, including a brief exploration of the politics of West Africa in the post-World War II years, the British working class movement and Black British Feminism in the '70s and '80s. Chapter Two engages with the points of view of the narrative and the historical perspectives of the novel. Chapter Three explores how I developed the language for each of the characters and what this portrays. Chapter Four considers space, time and memory within the novel, integrating personal memory as a focus for developing the story. The Conclusion looks at the novel as practice-based research and explores the question of authenticity.

In the Victorian novel, gender-based social norms dictated appropriate behaviour. Female wrongdoing was not only judged according to the law, but also according to the idealized conception of womanhood. It was this implicit cultural measure, and how far the woman contravened the feminine norms of society, that defined her criminal act rather than the act itself or the injury her act inflicted. When a woman deviated from the Victorian construction of the ideal woman, she was stigmatized and labelled. The fallen woman was viewed as a moral menance, a contagion. Foreign women who committed crimes were judged for their 'lack of Englishness.' Insanity evolved into not only a medical explanation for bizarre behaviour, but also a legal explanation for criminal behaviour. Finally, the habitual woman criminal and the infanticidal mother were seen as unnatural. Regardless of the crime committed, female criminals were ostracized and removed from 'respectable' English society.

In the current “secular age,” more and more people find beliefs and behaviors associated with traditional religion intellectually and ethically untenable. At the same time, many “postsecular” writers, both believers and nonbelievers, continue to write with religious or religiously-inflected forms, themes, and purposes. In the United States, postsecular poets “wrestle with angels” by engaging constructively and deconstructively with matters traditionally considered the domain of religion and spirituality. While the recent work of Jürgen Habermas, Charles Taylor, John McClure and others puts the concept of the postsecular at the cutting edge of various fields of study, including religion, sociology, and literature, this dissertation presents the first study of contemporary postsecular poetry. The central question is, how should we define and describe contemporary postsecular poetry in the United States and how should we understand its religious and literary significance? To answer this question, this dissertation presents a broad survey of postsecular contemporary American poetry, offers extended analyses of the work of two preeminent postsecular poets—Li-Young Lee and Scott Cairns—and probes the implications for readers of the poetic forms found in such texts.

A economia mundial tem sofrido intensas mudanças nas últimas décadas. As pequenas e médias empresas ganham destaque na economia e revelam consigo a importância do mercado de capital de risco, que ajuda no desenvolvimento dessas empresas com auxílio financeiro e de conhecimento. Nas fases ainda mais iniciais destacam-se os investidores anjos, pessoas físicas com elevado capital social e financeiro que atuam de forma societária nessas empresas. Este trabalho descreve o advento da Economia Empreendedora, melhor adaptada às mudanças acima, e entra no universo do investidor anjo. Com base numa ampla revisão bibliográfica são descritos o investidor, seu ambiente e sua forma de atuação. Em seguida, pela aplicação de um questionário baseado no conhecimento obtido com a literatura, diversas barreiras nessa identificadas foram submetidas a uma pesquisa que constatou algumas semelhanças com os mercados internacionais e também peculiaridades do mercado brasileiro. Avaliou-se ainda o comportamento dos anjos frente a 17 variáveis políticas e econômicas. Esta parte da pesquisa é útil em especial para a avaliação das atuais políticas de incentivo a esta atividade e ao planejamento de outras.
The World´s economy has changed a lot in the last decades. The small and medium size companies became more important and with them the venture capital, supplier of money and knowledge for these companies, also play an important role. In the first stages the angel investors, providers of social and financial capital for these companies, are more relevant. This work describes the origin of the Entrepreneurial Economy and enters into these investors universe. Based on an extensive bibliographic research it describes the angel investor, its environment and investment process. Latter, with research among Brazilian investors, the barriers fo und on the literature were submitted for their opinions. Many differences and similarities were found between Brazilian and the other markets. There were also evaluated the impact of 17 economic end political conditions, which are considerably important for the evaluation of actual and future political incentives to stimulate entrepreneurship.

This thesis seeks to understand the changing place of angels in the religious culture of Anglo-Saxon England between AD 700 and 1000. From images carved in stone to reports of prophetic apparitions, angels are a remarkably ubiquitous presence in the art, literature and theology of early medieval England. That very ubiquity has, however, meant that their significance in Anglo-Saxon thought has largely been overlooked, dismissed as a commonplace of fanciful monkish imaginations. But angels were always bound up with constantly evolving ideas about human nature, devotional practice and the workings of the world. By examining the changing ways that Anglo-Saxon Christians thought about the unseen beings which shared their world, it is possible to detect broader changes in religious thought and expression in one part of the early medieval West. The six chapters of this thesis each investigate a different strand from this complex of ideas. Chapters One and Two begin with Anglo-Saxon beliefs at their most theological and speculative, exploring ideas about the early history of the angels and the nature of their society – ideas which were used to express and promote changing ideals about religious practice in early England. Chapters Three and Four turn to the ways that angels were believed to interact more directly in earthly affairs, as guardians of the living and escorts of the dead, showing how even apparently traditional beliefs reveal changing ideas about intercession, moral achievement and the supernatural. Lastly, Chapters Five and Six investigate the complicated ways that these ideas informed two central aspects of Anglo-Saxon religion: the cult of saints, and devotional prayer. A final Conclusion considers the cumulative trajectory of these otherwise distinct aspects of Anglo-Saxon thought, and asks how we might best explain the changing importance of angels in early medieval England.

A key term in the cultural criticism of Walter Benjamin is his notion of "reception in distraction" as an antidote to ideology's domination over the mass society in the modern age. This dissertation attempts to illuminate this idea by offering case studies of three projects that summon into existence a new kind of reader, one capable of a trained apperception we may describe as "distracted."; One objective of the mass society according to a Frankfurt model of culture is the erasure of the subject; reception in distraction serves at once to create a space for the social dream and to re-inscribe the subject at the moment of reception through an insistence on its unruly, embodied presence. "Reception in Distraction" creates a cognitive space for disengagement from ideology, modeling what Michael Denning called the "dream work of the social." Critical theory is thus available to the mass public in the form of the "dream of history" that is solely accessible to a distracted apperception and whose subject is the faint possibility that the crisis of the present may be redeemed and repaired in the future. This project attempts to locate this dream of history in the autobiographical writings of Gertrude Stein, the detective fiction of Kenneth Fearing and the late silent cinema of Charlie Chaplin, each of which illustrates clearly the manner in which "distraction" functions to generate contradiction in the face of ideology's mass cultural form. Stein's experiments with the autobiographical form call for exactly this manner of reception, for which "Alice B. Toklas" becomes a key model. Similarly, Kenneth Fearing's Marxist detective novel The Big Clock and Modern Times , Charlie Chaplin's final silent film, reflect on the possibility of a productive reception-in-distraction that may co-opt the social forms of capitalism into a project of resistance and counter-discourse. "Distraction" is therefore more than merely an attitude of reception: it occasions a cognitive distance from ideology that is a key form of critical theory in the modern period.

Much of the extant literature from the kte Second Temple and early Christian periods (200BCE 100CE) contains material about angels. This dissertation is an investigation into the understanding during this period of the relationship between angels and humans. It serves two purposes: (1) it contributes to our understanding of ideas about angels in this period by surveying all of the available evidence and considering evidence that has not previously been studied in detail, and (2) it concludes, contrary to recent studies by Fletcher- Louis and Gieschen, that a clear distinction was maintained between angels and humans, despite occasions when this gap is bridged and humans do become angels. The first chapter introduces the subject, surveys previous research showing the need for the present study and sets out the historical context of the literature to be examined. After these preliminary considerations, the evidence for the distinction between angels and humans is examined in two parts: Part one consists of two chapters that investigate the issue of the similarity of appearance between humans and angels. Chapter two examines the evidence for the portrayal of angels as human beings; conversely, chapter three examines the evidence for the portrayal of humans being as angels. Part two consists of three chapters that investigate the portrayal of close contact between humans and angels. Chapter four examines texts that describe humans and angels living together in communities. Chapter five considers texts that portray angels as recipients of human hospitality, including the issue of whether or not angels ate food. Chapter six considers the human-angel hybrid offspring of Genesis 6 and its interpretations. The final chapter summarises the conclusions that are drawn from the evidence and outlines their implications for current scholarship.

This interdisciplinary thesis begins with a 1981 birthday gift of art, music, photography, and words presented to the citizenry of Los Angeles for their bicentennial titled The City of Our Lady Queen of the Angels. The installation was created by Anthony Duquette and Angelino artisans and depicted a court of giant Archangels presided over by their queen, the patron angel of the city. The installation was accompanied by a poem written for Los Angeles by Ray Bradbury, set to music by Garth Hudson, and preserved through photography by James Chen. I reconstruct the fragments of Bradbury's poem and prepare them as spell for transportation as a Los Angeles specific ritual performance. I document and then use the installation and poem as the inspiration for my own reinterpretation of the 1981 work through music, words and choreography titled A Dance in the Green Garden of the Queen of the Angels. My oral interpretation of the poem defines its structure, and composer David Johnson creates a score for the work, which I perform and record with instrumental quartet. I choreograph, cast, and costume the resulting Queen of the Angels Sonata as a ritual dance, and the piece is performed at CSULA’s International Day of Dance Concert, 2016. I then create a film production team to digitally record and edit the entire dance concert as a feature length film, and its seven individual dances as short film excerpts, that are distributed globally on YouTube.

This project focuses on two case studies as representative examples of Los Angeles’ progressive tolerance in the period of the 1920s: The Pentecostal mega-church of Aimee Semple-McPherson, and the Vedanta Ashram of Swami Paramananda. Both religious institutions opened in Los Angeles in 1923, just thirteen miles away from each other, and continued to thrive side-by-side throughout the twentieth century until present day. Each religious figure spoke to a part of the growing Los Angeles population: McPherson’s staunchly Christian, emotionally-driven, Hollywood-style ministry appealed to a large number of Los Angeles natives and newly-arrived immigrants, rocketing the emerging Pentecostal denomination into nationwide fame. Swami Paramananda’s message, conversely, offered a universalistic tolerance, appealing to those struggling to grasp America’s continued attachment to a strictly Christian message in a rapidly expanding world. Both institutions offer insight into the ability of remarkably varied religions to co-exist peacefully within a shared space. Beyond the exploration of these two figures and their religious groups, this project also approaches the broader topics of religious pluralism in 1920s Los Angeles, the impact of immigration and urbanization on the religious diversity of Southern California, and the shifting religious climate of post-WWI America generally. This paper engages urban sociological theory and postcolonial thought to analyze the effects of rapid population growth and the rural-urban shift on religious environments in 1920s Los Angeles. This analysis has implications for the present, as American cities continue to struggle with managing diversity of religious beliefs and expressions.
