Streszczenie:
Henricus Isaac's grand six-voice motet Angeli archangeli (Angels, archangels) sets a text from the liturgy of the Feast of All Saints (November 1), but its only preexistent musical material is a cantus firmus in the tenor voice, drawn from the tenor of the mid 15th-century chanson Comme femme desconfortéée (As a woman in distress), attributed to Binchois. Scholars have assumed that Angeli archangeli is a motet for All Saints but have been at a loss to explain why Isaac chose the cantus firmus he did. This study attempts to explain Isaac's puzzling juxtaposition of Latin text and secular cantus firmus by suggesting that Angeli archangeli is not a motet for All Saints, but rather for the Assumption of the Virgin. Liturgical analysis of the motet text reveals that its connection to the Feast of All Saints (November 1) is weaker than has previously been assumed. Additionally, examination of numerous other sacred works that incorporate the Comme femme desconfortéée tenor demonstrates that it was widely understood as a Marian cantus firmus ca. 1500. The Marian associations of the cantus firmus help to explain why one manuscript source (VatS 46) groups the work with other Marian motets, and why another (LeipU 1494) transmits it with a Marian contrafact text (O regina nobilissima). Finally, by relating the musical construction of Angeli archangeli to the Assumption of the Virgin as depicted in late medieval liturgy, iconography, and in Jacobus de Voragine's widely read Legenda aurea, it is suggested that the text of Angeli archangeli, though drawn from the All Saints liturgy, actually describes Mary's assumption into heaven. Sacred text and secular cantus firmus thus collaborate in communicating a complex but clear theological/devotional meaning.

The article begins from explaining two key terms for the theme: the holiness and the the concept of theosis. In the first and second paragraph author makes general remarks on what is the sanctity of God and sanctity of the Church. Only after that it is explained what was the meaning of the word “saint” used in the Old Testament and similarities and differences of the meaning of this term in the New Testament. The Church teaching of sanctity was précised in VII–VIII centuries only, when St. John Damascenes explained the differences between of worshiping God and venerating the saints. The author also explains differences between veneration of saints and the cult of pagan heroes, as well as between venerating saint and venerating angels. many observations are given from the Church Fathers as well as contemporary Orthodox theologians. In the third paragraph it was explained how the forming of the venerating saints of different categories was made i.e.: the martyrs, the apostles, the prophets, the ancestors (fathers, etc.), saint hierarchs of the Church, the venerable (the monastics), the right-believing, the witnesses, unmercenary physicians, the fool-for-Christ, the passion-bearers, the righteous (the just). The fourth paragraph gives short analysis of several main elements of the veneration of saints, as: the prayers to the saints, the intercession of the saints, the veneration of icons of the saints, the venerating of relics of the saints, the establishing of the feasts honoring the saints in the Church calendar, the liturgical feast for the memory of the saints, building of the churches honoring the saints, hymnography and hagiography to commemorate saints. The last paragraph of the article makes an explanation how the word “canonization” is understood on Orthodox Church and what is the procedure of canonizing saints in Orthodoxy is used.

Annibale Carracci (1560–1609) drew on the Italian Renaissance tradition of the Man of Sorrows to advance the Christological message within the altarpiece context of his Pietà with Saints (1585). From its location at the high altar of the Capuchin church of St. Mary Magdalene in Parma, the work commemorates the life of Duke Alessandro Farnese (1586–1592), who is interred right in front of Annibale’s painted image. The narrative development of the Pietà with Saints transformed the late medieval Lamentation altarpiece focused on the dead Christ into a riveting manifestation of the beautiful and sleeping Christ worshipped by saints and angels in a nocturnal landscape. Thus eschewing historical context, the pictorial thrust of Annibale’s interpretation of the Man of Sorrows attached to the Pietà with Saints was to heighten Eucharistic meaning while allowing for sixteenth-century theological and poetic thought of Mary’s body as the tomb of Christ to cast discriminating devotional overtones on the resting place of the deceased Farnese Duke.

Streszczenie:
Abstract This article presents a first look at some of the key sources and hypotheses of ongoing research on a significant yet ill-studied figure in late antique Egyptian-Christian piety: The “Angel of the Altar,” or “of the Topos,” and later “of the Sacrifice” as he is still invoked in the Coptic liturgy today. Since the 4th century, church canons and literary works aiming to instill fear of the altar in monks and clerics warn of the angel guarding it, who can only be seen by monastic and clerical leaders in visions which become a common feature of post-Chalcedonian Coptic homiletics. This angel figure is identified with God’s destructive power defending the ark/altar/temple in the Old Testament. The “Angel of the Altar” also has the crucial liturgical function of lifting the Eucharistic offering to God. He is even considered the true dispenser or withholder of the Eucharist, overshadowing and potentially nullifying the actions of the priest. Originally an impersonal figure, he is sometimes identified with the specific archangel assigned to the church in question, such as Michael or Raphael. In a further step, it seems that some monastic communities who built their corporate identities on the fame of their respective patron saint began to identify the latter with the “Angel of the Altar,” appropriating the concept for the cult of saints. Documentary papyri show how monastic leaders invoked the Angel as superhuman punisher and blesser in the economic interest of the monastery. It is probably in this context that the variant “Angel of the Topos” emerged, amounting to what seems to be the only technical term for “patron saint of a place” in Coptic.

The present dissertations purpose is the comparison proposed by George Eliot in the Prelude of the novel Middlemarch between its protagonist, Dorothea Brooke, and the historical character Teresa of Avila. Such study endeavors to understand in which way the specific situation of the Victorian woman is articulated within the novel as to mirror the ontological and epistemological crisis of the human being itself during the transformations consolidated by the Enlightenment and the liberal revolutions of the eighteenth century which culminated in the death of God. Dorothea is as ardent a Christian as the fifteenth century Teresa, but she lacks the certainties and the resolution to concretize the social reforms she defends, because she incarnates the nineteenth century myth of womanhood known as the Angel in the House an ideal of feminine subjection to the phalocentric order whose functions are the protection and diffusion of the bourgeois morality and the replacement of Christian elements within the imaginary universe of the sacred to a society progressively more materialistic and insecure of absolute values. The afflictions of Dorothea represent the afflictions of the Victorian woman, but the critical moment of this woman reflects, in Middlemarch, a much greater crisis in the Western thought, which began with the Age of Reason

The aim of this study is to situate st. Angela merici (d. 1540, brescia, italy) in the midst of the historical, literary, cultural, religious and spiritual currents of her time in order better to understand her writings. It seems that in previous studies on angela this background has not been given in the light of recent research on the italian renaissance, nor have neoplatonic influences stemming from ficino's work been duly recognized. A literary explication of the major figures (images metaphors symbols) used by angela also has not been done before this study, but is important for determining the foundress's original, pristine meanings. From sources, it is shown that angela's writings are to be interpreted on the literal, moral, allegorical, anagogical levels of meaning. Her major images symbols (i. E. , ladder of light, interior treasure nobility, the mirror, and spiritual maternity as a result of mystical espousals) derive not only from biblical exegesis but also from scotus and bonaventure (exemplarism) with their sources (areopagite, victorines, lombard), from greek patristics, and from ficino (vestigia, formulae; "the two venuses. "). Angela saw a pre-tridentine reform in n. Italy, involving bishops such as pole, sadoleto, giberti of verona, who corresponded with erasmus and more's circle. Giberti especially advanced the publication of greek patristics, with church reform as an explicit return to sources, the gospel and the primitive church. Living in this verona diocese, province of venice, angela was close to these currents, and to "lay evangelism" in n. Italy. As her secretary cozzano's letters also show, angela knew of the practices of the primitive church, as reflected even in symbols in hymns used for profession-ceremonies of the company of st. Ursula, her foundation (1535) of consecrated laywomen in the midst of the world, continuing the tradition of the virgins of the primitive church

In Catholicism, the link between the protective angel and a collectivity or an individual recalls the relationship of patronage within the cult of the saints. Well-adapted to the clerical discourse of the Counter-Reformation, particularly to the Jesuit discourse on the "Final Judgment", the guardian angel has the advantage of orienting the piety of the faithful towards the central cults of Catholicism. On the borderline of the liturgy of the holy angels, one also finds a syncretic production which includes certain elements of the modern catholic conception of the guardian angel and the saint, but this is inspired also by theoretical speculations on the saints in the first centuries, on the kabbalic doctrines of the Renaissance, 19th century occultism, and modern zodiacal astrology. Far from a semiotic or theological reading, this anthropological exploration therefore analyses the different forms of devotion to the guardian angel, from the anonymous catholic guardian angel to the 72 angels in contemporary esotericism assigned to the whole of humanity, in considering also the idea of the death of close kin identified with the particular angel of the individual

Streszczenie:
Abstract The first literal biblical reference to angels of any kind declares the presence of angels at the casting of Adam and Eve from the Garden: God “drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life” (Gen. 3:24). The angels symbolize the impossibility of man’s unaided return to his state of innocence, his state of original purity. This image of angels who prevent the sinful from entering a sacred place provides the typological basis for a story about Saint Mary of Egypt. As a capital from the Cloister of Saint-Etienne de Toulouse depicts the scene, an angel with a sword keeps the still-sinful Mary from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Here as elsewhere, the angels of Scripture provide images, models, and examples for the stories of the saints that constitute the history of the restoration of humanity. While the early creation account and the theological explication of the creation of the angels was an essential ingredient of scholastic theology, the stories of the encounters between the patriarchs and the angels were extremely important because they established the typologies for beliefs about angels espoused by both scholastics and common folk. While these cherubim of Genesis 3:24 stood watch outside the gates of Paradise, other angels would play important roles in the restoration of human beings to the celestial Paradise.

The primary purpose of this offwind sail investigation was to better understand the relative performance of symmetric spinnakers flown from conventional poles and asymmetric spinnakers flown from conventional poles or sprits, i.e. poles restricted to the centerline. The specific goal was to improve the aerodynamic modeling of offwind sails used in the International Measurement System (IMS) handicapping formula to address perceived inequities in their performance potential, particularly when running at very deep angles. Running style offwind sails of varying size, type, and pole configuration were evaluated over appropriate ranges of angle of attack and trim settings. Improved performance coefficients were developed from this data for inclusion into the 2001 IMS velocity prediction program.

Streszczenie:
The effects of multiple wings interacting and the change in efficiency due to those effects as well as optimal sheeting angles are becoming an important area of study with the advent of wind-propelled ships for goods transport. This research presents a first analysis of wind tunnel tests carried out at the University of Southampton R.J. Mitchell wind tunnel where three wings are subject to turbulent flow with Reynolds number in excess of 1 million. A range of possible variations of ship heading and apparent wind angles are tested taking into consideration the blockage effects and the geometrical characteristics of the working section. The forces and moments are captured on each individual wing as well as in the overall wind tunnel balance with 6-components dynamometers. Furthermore, pressure sensors and PIV data are recorded during the tests to provide the experimental campaign with results that can validate both qualitatively and quantitatively the numerical tools developed to aid the design stage of wind propelled vessels.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Wind-assisted propulsion is deemed to be a potential way to effectively reduce CO2 emissions in ship navigation. Some studies are discussing the characteristics of different sail types and their thrust performance, but a systematic investigation on the features of a multiple-sail system is insufficient, especially the effects of sail geometry and position on lift and drag. In this study, three arc-shaped sails are selected, and the geometric and spacing parameters are chosen as variables. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method is applied to perform the simulations. The 2D overset mesh technique is applied to allow convenient mesh rotations. One sail alone is first investigated to find the best attack angle, and three sails with consistent attack angles and even mast distance are studied afterward. Finally, the Design of Experiment (DOE) is implemented to evaluate the significance level of the variables. Based on the results, it shows that the sails interaction can provide both positive and negative effects on the thrust performance. The distance between Sail 1 and Sail 2, the attack angle of Sail 1 and Sail 2 are significant factors impacting the thrust of the three-sail propulsion system. The mechanism of the interaction effects on the lift is also addressed. This study helps to find the predominant parameters affecting sail thrust performance and contributes to an intelligent manipulation of a multiple-sail propulsion system.

Streszczenie:
In recent years computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has demonstrated the ability to predict sail and appendage forces under upwind conditions or at angles of attack conducive to attached flow. Few sail or yacht designers would be without this tool, at least to check or confirm performance estimates made with other methods. More advanced codes (RANS) solve the full Navier-Stokes equations, thus including viscous effects and placing relatively less importance to fully attached flow. Due to the large proportion of downwind sailing, where the sails might operate in separated airflow, it is useful to evaluate the performance of sails as used off wind despite the added uncertainty resulting from the elasticity of the light material that must be used to allow the sails to fill properly at the low relative wind speeds. While downwind sail forces have been often tested in wind tunnels, CFD codes are now sufficiently advanced to predict such forces with confidence similar to that achieved in prediction of upwind forces. This paper presents a new method of linking a CFD code with a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) computer program, for evaluating the sail shapes and proper trim for known sail materials and fiber orientation. A VPP (Velocity Prediction Program) is used to predict leeway, heel, and boat speed for a given true wind angle and wind speed. Then the CFD code computes the airflow around the sails for the given onset flow conditions and provides the pressure distribution on the sails as needed for the FEA program. This is done in full scale considering the boundary layer above the water. This process of updating the pressure for the FEA program from the CFD code is repeated several times until optimal trim and sail shapes can be obtained for best sailing performance, e.g., the maximum driving force. Thus, this method can be considered a "Virtual Wind Tunnel" (VWT).
