Streszczenie:
This work is focused on the abolitionist movement in Rio de Janeiro. It offers a careful reconstruction of the movement’s context and evolution in Rio, and the related formal parliamentary history. An understanding of the nature of the political parties of the Brazilian monarchy, the role of the crown, and the significance of ideology and individual statesmen has been brought to bear in order to comprehend how the regime actually interacted with abolitionism and how both the movement and the regime shaped each other as a consequence. One cannot understand the movement’s history as something apart from the elite political world that it challenged and changed. A central element in this study is an examination of the role of racial identity and racial solidarity in the abolitionist movement’s history. Previous analyses of the movement have always argued that the movement was an urban, middle-class, white movement (with a few significant Afro-Brazilian leaders), one that only gathered Afro-Brazilian mass support over time. A more careful analysis of the evidence transforms our understanding, disclosing Afro-Brazilian middle-class membership and the Afro-Brazilian masses present and mobilized in the movement from its beginning to its end. This study interweaves the imperial capital’s Afro-Brazilian components, its parliament and monarchy, and the nature and evolution of a reformist movement. It explains how the seemingly impossible was made possible: how an urban political movement ended slavery and did so within the confines of a monarchy dominated and maintained by elite

Tran, Jonathan. Asian Americans and the Spirit of Racial Capitalism. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197587904.001.0001.

Streszczenie:
Asian Americans and the Spirit of Racial Capitalism contrasts two approaches to antiracist theory and practice. The first emphasizes racial identity to the exclusion of political economy. This approach’s prevalence, in the academy and beyond, now rises to the level of established doctrine. The second approach views racial identity as the function of a particular political economy—what is called racial capitalism—and therefore analytically subordinates racial identity to political economy. The book develops arguments in favor of the second approach. It does so by employing case studies of two Asian American communities: a Chinese migrant settlement in the Mississippi Delta (1868–1969) and a religious base community in the Bayview/Hunters Point section of San Francisco (1969–present). While focused on groups and persons (i.e., the Delta Chinese and Redeemer Community Church) the book more broadly examines racial capitalism’s processes and commitments (i.e., the Delta Chinese business model and Redeemer’s “deep economy”) at the sites of their structural and systemic unfolding. Constructively, the book proposes reframing antiracism in terms of a theologically salient account of political economy. In pursuing a research agenda that pushes beyond the narrow confines of racial identity, the book reaches back to trusted modes of analysis that have been obscured by the prevailing antiracist orthodoxy. Approaching race through political economy will not get at everything that racism is, and does, but it gets at what can be managed, and in the last resort lived. Accordingly, the book invites readers into a different life with race and racism, reimagining what they are and are doing.

Streszczenie:
Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) refers to the proportional overrepresentation of minority youth at each step of the juvenile justice system. This book addresses the issue of color-blind racism through an examination of the circular logic used by the juvenile justice system to criminalize non-White youth. The book begins by introducing how structural racism affected the lives of non-White youth through their interactions with the juvenile justice system. It finds how differential treatment is the cause of DMC. The book explains the concept of Occam's razor, which involves racial or ethnic inequalities across society. It looks into the opposing explanations for DMC and focuses on law enforcement contact with juveniles through arrests and citations. Disproportionate minority contact defines the overrepresentation of minorities throughout the juvenile justice system, while overrepresentation, on the other hand, implies the comparison of racial and ethnic characteristics of people in the juvenile justice system. The book analyses intake decisions and outcomes in the juvenile justice system, and covers juvenile self-reports of deviant and criminal behaviour. It discusses issues seen in the data of DMC and tackles the process of interviewing people amongst the minority overrepresentation in the juvenile justice system. Drawing on original data, including interviews with court and probation officers and juvenile self-reports, the book calls for a need to understand racial and ethnic inequality in the juvenile justice system from a structural perspective rather than simply at the level of individual bias. In doing so, the book contributes to larger discussions on how race operates in the United States.

This chapter analyzes the 2002 maternal death of Alyne da Silva Pimentel and the 2011 decision made by the Committee for the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on behalf of Alyne da Silva Pimentel’s family. The chapter argues that the Alyne case highlights the intersectional relationship among gender, race, and class in shaping Afro-Brazilian women’s vulnerability to maternal death. The analysis explores the racial dimensions of maternal mortality in Brazil and highlights the potential benefits that can be gained from using a human rights approach to address African-descendant women’s experiences of intersectional discrimination.

Streszczenie:
This chapter evaluates how Americans racially classify others and how this process of racial classification might vary across individuals. The case examined in this chapter are voter perceptions of President Barack Obama’s race. Data show that although Obama self-identifies as (only) African American, the majority of voters describe Obama as a mixed-race person. At the same time, racial classification is found to vary depending on the respondent’s race and so analyses are offered that compare white, black, and Latino perception of Obama’s race. The second half of the chapter assesses the possible political implications of perceiving Obama as black compared to perceiving Obama as mixed race. Data show that voters who perceive Obama as black evaluate the president differently than voters who perceive Obama as mixed race.

Streszczenie:
This chapter focuses on Utah, another Mountain state, using a case study of press coverage of the 1925 lynching of African American Robert Marshall. It analyzes early-twentieth-century race relations and a recent contentious debate over the public memory of racial lynching in a state historically dominated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons). Memphis journalist Ida B. Wells was the first to identify the underlying causes of lynching. In three long investigative pamphlets published between 1892 and 1900, she discussed how allegations of rape obscured the real reason behind the killings of black men: white rage over economic advances among a rising black middle class. Lynching has received considerable scholarly and popular attention since Wells' groundbreaking work.

Streszczenie:
This chapter outlines the new theoretical approach developed in this book: identity choice or the practice of race as a form of personal identification. The book contends that identity choice is a distinct cultural shift in how Americans define race. Historically race has been defined as a product of assigned classification in which an individual is categorized into a racial group based on the social definitions of that given time. Multiracial Americans are highlighted as an important case of identity choice given that they promote race as a form of identity but reveal the continued importance of assigned classification given that multiracial individuals are often categorized into racial groups by others. This chapter offers a historical analysis contrasting the reliance on assigned classification with the development of identity choice. The final sections of the chapter offer an overview of each chapter of the book.

Streszczenie:
The chapter analyses the fractious relationship between racial diversity and the welfare state in the US—arguably the most influential case in NPD literature. It shows that US Whites are critical of welfare because their attitude rests on negative feelings about African-Americans and Latino immigrants. However, not all parts of the US welfare state are affected by this combination of race coding and low public support: means-tested welfare is badly affected but the social security components are not. These differences are traced back to their origins by comparing a highly race coded and unpopular welfare program (AFDC, and later TANF) with a non-coded, popular program of old age social security (OAI). Originally highly affected by racial considerations, the programs diverged because of their institutional design and their ability to raise and expand their political support bases.

Streszczenie:
Leading scholars analyze three disruptions in the 2020 presidential campaign and election: disruptions to the status quo caused by the renewed quest for racial justice and greater diversity of candidates; pandemic disruptions to traditional campaigning; and disruptions to democratic norms. Democracy Disrupted documents the most significant features of the 2020 U.S. presidential election through research conducted by leading scholars in political communication. Chapters consider the coinciding of three historical events in 2020: a 100-year pandemic co-occurring with the presidential campaign, the reinvigorated call for social and racial justice in response to the killing of George Floyd and other Black men and women, and the authoritarian lurch that emerged in reaction to Donald Trump's norm-challenging rhetoric. The Democratic Party's campaign stood out because of the historically diverse field of presidential candidates and the election of the first female vice president. Chapter authors adopt diverse scientific methodologies and field-leading theories of political communication to understand the way these events forced candidates, campaigns, and voters to adapt to these extraordinary circumstances. Experiments, surveys, case studies, and textual analysis illuminate essential features of this once-in-a-generation campaign. This timely volume is edited by four scholars who have been central to describing and contextualizing each recent presidential contest.
