The performance of electronic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at high sampling rates is fundamentally limited by the timing jitter of electronic clocks. To circumvent this limitation, one method is to exploit the orders-of-magnitude lower timing jitter of mode-locked lasers and implement optical sampling as a front-end for electronic ADCs. The optical-sampling, wavelength-demultiplexing approach to A/D conversion, which is explored in this thesis, offers key benefits such as ease of scalability to higher aggregate sampling rates via passive wavelength-division demultiplexing (WDM) filters and potential for full integration via silicon photonics platform for chip-scale signal processing applications. This thesis will first cover the design issues for each stage in the optically-sampled, wavelength-demultiplexed photonic ADC architecture, followed by experimental results from two system demonstrations. Digitization of a 41-GHz signal with 7.0 effective bits at a sampling rate of 2 GSa/s was demonstrated with a discrete-component photonic ADC, which corresponds to 15 fs of jitter, a 4-5 times improvement over state-of-the-art electronic ADCs. On the way towards an integrated photonic ADC, a silicon chip with core photonic components was fabricated and used to digitize a 10-GHz signal with 3.5 effective bits. Drop-port transmission measurements of an integrated 20-channel WDM filter bank are included to show potential for high sampling rate operation with 10 effective bits.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe Artificial Neural Network (ANN) paradigm consists of the application of biological “neural” models to the solution of particular problems that often are very hard to solve for the classical “Von Neumann” architectures. Different are the approaches proposed in literature for the implementation of an ANN. Some of them are software implementations only while, others are circuital solutions as full custom digital circuits or programmed FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) as well as analogue circuits and the typology of the implementation certainly depends on the length of the processing time that you believe adequate for the particular application. This thesis is focused on the design of new analogue circuits well suited for Neural Network applications. In particular, the class of the Cellular Neural Networks (CNN), proposed in 1981 by Prof. L.O.Chua (University of California - Berkeley), will be exploited. In this area, the “Laboratorio Circuiti” at University of Rome “Tor Vergata” designed and manufactured several analogue chips devoted to this class of Neural Networks. These chips belong to the Digital Programmable CNN (DPCNN) chip family and present two main features: the digital programmability of the synaptic weights as well as a special architecture oriented to an interconnection structure (i.e. it is possible to carry out large network by connecting together more of these chips). In this thesis work you will find an overview about the Artificial Neural Network, the Cellular Neural Network and the Star Cellular Neural Network: what they are, how they work and why they are useful. In particular, the DP-CNN chip family will be deeply described. This thesis proposes the TD-CNN (Time Division CNN), a particular design strategy, devoted to reduce the silicon area occupation of the a elementary cell in order to improve the VLSI integrability of the network. Moreover, the same time-division strategy will be applied to TD-Star CNN. In particular, these circuits consist of the digitally programmable non-linearity circuits (i.e. the Digital Programmable Transconductance Amplifier - DPTA and Digital Programmable Transconductance Comparator – DTPC) and special circuit for to carry out the multiplexing feature (i.e. the Dynamic Mirror Sample and Hold – DM-SH and the Multiplexer – DM-MUX). Several circuital simulations will be shown in order to study the behavior of this modified architecture and the modifications on the dynamics introduced by the time division strategy.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe presence of oceans beneath the surface of some of Jupiter's (e.g. Europa) and Saturn's (e.g. Titan, Enceladus) icy satellites, coupled with the existence of geysers that allow their depths to be sampled, has highlighted the strong exobiological potential of these planetary bodies in the solar system. Such discoveries have motivated the development of future space missions (Dragonfly for Titan and mission concepts for Europa and Enceladus) to understand the surface chemistry of these ocean worlds, and by extension to search for traces of prebiotic chemistry or past or present life. The search for such signatures requires a chemical analyzer on board the probes that will be sent into the outer solar system. Many analytical techniques can be used, but gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) appears to be one of the best techniques for answering these questions, thanks to its heritage in space exploration, its ability to analyze a wide range of organic compounds, and its potential for detecting biosignatures, especially by studying the enantiomery of chiral species. The aim of this thesis is to prepare for future in situ chemical analysis of these icy moons, both by improving our scientific knowledge and by technically optimizing our instruments. The main purpose is to evaluate and optimize the analytical capabilities of GC-MS and associated sample preparation methods, in order to detect organic molecules and biosignatures within the analytical constraints known and/or expected on these planetary bodies (richness in organic matter in samples from Titan, and presence of water and salts in samples from the surface of Europa and Enceladus, etc.). In the case of Europa and Enceladus, the study of hypersaline terrestrial samples has highlighted the ability of GC-MS and associated pretreatment methods to find organic molecules of interest for exobiology, despite the presence of salts. In order to assess the impact of salt on these methods, a desalination protocol was developed and implemented. In addition to the analytical aspect, my work has enabled the selection and characterization of the performance of the chromatographic columns (general and chiral) that will be integrated into the DraMS instrument on board the Dragonfly probe (e.g. Dragonfly Mass Spectrometer, DraMS). For these different aspects, this work was based on the study of synthetic analogous samples (tholins for Titan) as well as natural ones (hypersaline lake for Europa and Enceladus)

Pełny tekst źródłaThis report will cover the work process behind creating a spectrum analyzer. The reader will be able to read about the chosen method but also the alternative methods. Apart from this the theoretical parts behind every moment will also be covered and compared to potential alternative solutions. The project has been carried out on behalf of KA Automation. The purpose of the project was to create a base for analyzing sound frequencies. The goal was to be able to identify sound properties in the form of frequencies in servo motors in for example water pumps. The idea was to be able to in a later development stage be able to identify when new frequencies have entered the audio profile which might result in the motor to be in need of service. The base is created with the help of C# and the sound library NAudio. From the result one can conclude that this program can analyze sound and display the magnitude of its frequency components and is therefore a suitable base for future development.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of the present work was to develop two analytical approaches dedicated to the analysis of new psychoactive substances in different biological matrices (blood, urine and hair). The first approach is based on untargeted screening by both biochip array technology chemiluminescence assay and liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and the second corresponds to a targeted screening by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). These two approaches were then applied in observational studies to assess the consumption of NPS in high risk populations (overdose, drug abuse, drug facilitated crimes) in clinical and forensic settings. The last part of the work was devoted to the development of a new analytical tool for LC-HRMS data processing which made it possible to study the metabolism of 9 NPS In vitro on human liver microsomes (HLM) and In vivo in biological samples from drug users. This approach has enabled the creation of HRMS spectral library containing 228 metabolites, some of which have been proposed as relevant markers of NPS exposure. This work has resulted on 10 scientific publications and allowed to initiate many multidisciplinary collaborations

In this paper, a 10-bit 500-MSample/s CMOS digital-to-analog (D/A) converter is presented. It is based on a current steering segmented 5 + 5 architecture that comprises 5MSB’s unary cells and 5LSB’s binary weighted cells in this design. The 500-MSample/s conversion rate has been obtained by an, at transistor level, fully custom designed thermometer decoder and synchronization circuit. In the digital part, a high speed, high output crossing-point latch is designed to minimize the glitch energy. Moreover, using cascade current cell in analog part can increase the output impedance and improve the performance of the SNDR and SFDR. From the simulation result, the glitch energy is 0.995 psec-V. For a near 250 MHz input signal at 500 MHz sampling rate, the SNDR is about 60dB. The power consumption of this DAC with a single 3.3V supply is 70 mW. Proper area of current source transistor is chosen to overcome mismatch error due to process variation. This DAC chip is fabricated using TSMC 0.18μm-1P6M CMOS process and the die area is 1.07mm×1.07mm.

With the advance of deep submicron technology, the low supply voltage will become the trend of circuit development due to the device’s reliability issues. However, the signal dynamic range will be decreased because of the reduction of supply voltage. In order to maintain the dynamic range, the noise and signal distortion must be suppressed. By this way, it will indirectly increase the power consumption of analog circuits. Especially, a high-gain op-amp is necessitated to guarantee the required accuracy in the conventional pipelined ADC. However, due to the process limitations, it is difficult to implement such a high-gain op-amp. The penalty of additional power dissipation must be paid to implement this op-amp. In this thesis, a technique called as wide-band folded SHA is proposed to relax the requirement of high-gain op-amp and increase the tolerable input swing in a pipelined ADC. A 10-bit 200 MS/s pipelined ADC with the proposed wide-band folded SHA has been designed with the TSMC 0.18 慆 CMOS 1P6M process to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SHA.

A 10-bit 800M-Sample/s current-steering digital-to-analog converter(DAC) is designed in this thesis. Considering both circuit linearity and chip area, binary-weighted code and thermometer codes are used in encoding. Area analysis is used to overcome process variations for current source transistors. In order to reduce glitch and enhance dynamical performance of the DAC, filp-flops are utilized in signal synchronization. The chip is implemented in TSMC 0.18μm 1P6M CMOS technology. Simulation results show that the SFDR of the current-steering DAC with an input frequency of 102MHz under sampling frequency of 800MHz is 61.9dB. The DNL is about +0.454/-0.258LSB and INL is about +0.310/-0.206LSB. The total area is 1.458 x 1.248 mm2. The total power consumption is 20.98mW. With the experience of the area analysis to overcome process variations, then a new foreground calibration technique is proposed. Only 6 bits are for required analyzing current source transistors area and overall 12-bit linearity could be reached after calibration. The key concept of the calibration scheme is to control the body voltages of the current source transistors. The actual threshold voltage varied accordingly and hence the drain current Id is calibrated. The DAC operates with supply voltage of 1.8V, and can achieve 12-bit resolution at sampling frequency of 250MHz. Furthermore, this DAC demonstrates small-area characteristic.

By aggressive device scaling in modern integrated circuit technology, the computing power of digital circuits increases significantly. But the low power supply and relative high threshold voltage of transistors exhibit design constraints for analog circuit. Analog-to-digital converters(ADCs) are the key components to connect the real world with the discrete-computation fields. Due to their extensive use of analog and mixed analog-digital operations, ADC often appears as the bottleneck in data processing applications, resulting in limiting the overall speed or precision. In this thesis, we describe the implementation and measurement results of a 6-bit 1-GS/s pipelined ADC with open-loop residue amplification. Employing voltage-mode open-loop amplifiers in 1.5-bit conversion per stage, global gain control techniques in gain stages, the proposed ADC relaxes stringent design tradeoffs between speed and power. The measurement results achieves ENOB of 3.9-bit for low frequency input that is better than high frequency input for resolution. The measured DNL is within 1.17 LSB and –1.19 LSB and the measured INL is within 1.73 LSB and –1.57 LSB. The total power dissipation is 25 mW. The chip is fabricated in a TSMC 90nm CMOS Mixed Signal RF 1P9M CMOS technology, the all area is 0.65mm X 0.65mm and the core area is 0.199mm X 0.144mm.

We present a 6-bit 1G sample/s CMOS flash analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) with new design concepts. First, we use a three input AND gate in sample and holding(S/H) structure to replace the conventional resistor and capacitor one that improves the dimensional error from process. Second, we propose a coding circuit without one-out-of-n encoder and the complexity of the circuit is largely reduced. In this 6 bit flash ADC structure, the input signal was compared with reference voltage generated by resistor array, then forward to sampling circuit. The sampling values were transfer to the Thermometer code and then the Gray code in order to eliminate the bubble problem in the encoding process. Finally, Binary code is used for the resulting output digital signals. The designed ADC is fabricated in TSMC 0.35μm 2P4M CMOS technology. The voltage working range of the ADC is from 0.9 to 1.8V which dramatically lower the power consumption to 25.478mW. This 6-bit 1G sample/s CMOS flash ADC is low cost, low power consumption and high accuracy.

In this thesis, a novel observer-based digital redesign tracker, whose parameters are given by a hybrid design of EP-based iterative learning control and linear quadratic analog tracker, is proposed to resolve the output tracking problem for a class of nonlinear sampled data systems. The tracker possesses good tracking performance in transient state response as well as in steady that when an appropriate sampling time is given. Furthermore, its tracking result is better than that of an original digital redesign tracker at a large sampling time. Firstly, the ideal system state is obtained from the hybrid design of iterative learning control (ILC) and linear quadratic analog tracker (LQAT). Then, according to the optimal linearization algorithm, the nonlinear system will be converted into the linear model by the state as operating point at each sampling time. Finally, these models will be applied to design the digital redesign tracker which preserves the perfect tracking performance of the analog controller. In addition, an observer, whose design idea is derived from the method of the linear quadratic regulator (LQR), will be applied in the digital redesign tracker, when some system state could not be acquired. Furthermore, in order to improve the learning convergence of ILC, evolutionary programming will be applied to search for the optimal learning gain of ILC; three improved subjects of ILC, the initial control input decision, the observer design by optimal linearization algorithm and LQR, and the improved update learning rule for the second order derivative system, whose product matrix of C and B is not full rank, will be presented in this thesis. Several MIMO illustrative examples will be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
