Ethnography and theology are two contrasting life-activities, regulated by separate ideals. Like other sciences, ethnography is regulated by the ideal of ‘truth’. It gathers data about human communities, particularly their worldviews and their tacit social practices. New data correct old conclusions, forcing ethnographers to discard the ideas with which they began their investigations. Following the regulative ideal helps them avoid placing their concerns about those of the people they study. Theologians (and others) can use ethnographic methods to gather data about congregational life, how people practice their religions, etc., but this practice itself is not ‘doing’ theology.

Prime fuzzy ideals, prime fuzzyk-ideals, and prime fuzzyh-ideals are roped in one condition. It is shown that this way better fuzzification is achieved. Other major results of the paper are: every fuzzy ideal (resp.,k-ideal,h-ideal) is contained in a prime fuzzy ideal (resp.,k-ideal,h-ideal). Prime radicals and nil radicals of a fuzzy ideal are defined; their relationship is established. The nil radical of a fuzzyk-ideal (resp., anh-ideal) is proved to be a fuzzyk-ideal (resp.,h-ideal). The correspondence theorems for different types of fuzzy ideals of hemirings are established. The concept of primary fuzzy ideal is introduced. Minimum imperative for proper fuzzification is suggested and it is shown that the fuzzifications introduced in this paper are proper fuzzifications.

All of us have an idea of the ideal conditions in which we would like to live. They will vary according to the degree of ambition and level of education. However, people have common wishes since we don’t live in isolation (perhaps with rare exceptions) and we require guarantees from other people that they are willing to accept certain rules and conditions for the best possible coexistence. Plato was the first to look for such general or even necessary requirements to create an ideal social structure. He considers different aspects of social reality – the division of society into classes, the specifics of upbringing and education, even the physical structure of the city and its religion. The article is devoted to the consideration of religious practices, associated cult activities and holidays. In ancient Greece, religion permeated all areas of human life. It would be more correct to say that religion simply did not exist separately from everyday life. Of course, we can distinguish major religious events in the form of solemn organised processions marking the change of seasons, dedicated to the harvest or some other memorable dates. But more often, religious practices were tightly woven into people’s lives, so that even political and military actions were accompanied by an offering to the gods or consultation with the oracle. Understanding the role that religious activity plays in educating citizens, Plato does not seek to create an entirely new popular religion, but as a philosopher interested in the common good, he begins to interpret the images of traditional Greek gods differently. He focuses most of his attention on Zeus, Dionysus and Aphrodite. By comparing traditional notions of the gods with the way Plato portrays them, we conclude that the philosopher has done serious work to rationalise their images. Zeus ceases to be a famous womanizer and head of Olympus, and acquires the traits of a creator, the only good god who is incapable of any evil or injustice. The raucous fun, dancing and intoxication that used to be the cause of many misfortunes and associated with Dionysus are now being declared useful in terms of testing strength and honesty on the one hand, and, on the other, are understood as a necessary means of getting rid of negative energy and bringing people together. The uncontrolled erotic desire sent by Aphrodite is seen by Plato as behavior that is unacceptable in the citizens of an ideal state, and so he develops the doctrine of the two Aphrodites, heavenly and vulgar, in which the heavenly Aphrodite is declared to be a certain stimulus that leads the soul to the supreme good.

AbstractWe improve results of Marczewski, Frankiewicz, Brown, and others comparing theω-ideals of measure zero, meager, Marczewski measure zero, and completely Ramsey null sets; in particular, we remove CH from the hypothesis of many of Brown's constructions of sets lying in some of these ideals but not in others. We improve upon work of Marczewski by constructing, without CH, a nonmeasurable Marczewski measure zero set lacking the property of Baire. We extend our analysis ofω-ideals to include the completely Ramsey null sets relative to a Ramsey ultrafilter and obtain all 32 possible examples of sets in some ideals and not others, some under the assumption of MA, but most in ZFC alone. We also improve upon the known constructions of a Marczewski measure zero set which is not Ramsey by using a set theoretic hypothesis which is weaker than those used by other authors. We give several consistency proofs: one concerning the relative sizes of the covering numbers for the meager sets and the completely Ramsey null sets; another concerning the size of non; and a third concerning the size of add. We also study those classes of perfect sets which are bases for the class of always first category sets.

<p>In this article, we introduce ideals and other special ideals on EQ-algebras, such as implicative ideals, primary ideals, prime ideals and maximal ideals. At first, we give the notion of ideal and its related properties on EQ-algebras, and give its equivalent characterizations. We discuss the relations between ideals and filters, and study the generating formula of ideals on EQ-algebras. Moreover, we study the properties of implicative ideals, primary ideals, prime ideals and maximal ideals and their relations. For example, we prove that every maximal ideal is prime and if prime ideals are implicative, then they are maximal in the EQ-algebra with the condition $ (DNP) $. Finally, we introduce the topological properties of prime ideals. We get that the set of all prime ideals is a compact $ T_{0} $ topological space. Also, we transferred the spectrum of EQ-algebras to bounded distributive lattices and given the ideal reticulation of EQ-algebras.</p>

Abstract:The essay agues that there is little scope for ideal theory in political philosophy, even under Rawls’s conception of its aims. It begins by identifying features of a standard example of ideal theory in physics — the ideal gas law, PV=NRT and draws attention to the lack of these features in Rawls’s derivation of the principles of justice from the original position. A. John Simmons’s defense of ideal theory against criticisms of Amartya Sen is examined, as are further criticisms of both by David Schmidtz. The essay goes on to develop a conception of the domain of social relations to be characterized by justice that suggests that as a moving target it makes ideal theory otiose. Examination of Rawls’s later views substantiate the conclusion that ideal theory as propounded in A Theory of Justice is a mistaken starting point in the enterprise of political philosophy. Differences between the domains of ideal theory in mathematics, physics, and economics on the one hand, and political philosophy on the other, reinforce this conclusion.

Hobson, Stephen John, i N/A. "How can Photographic Practice Assist our Quest for Intimacy with an Ideal Other?" Griffith University. Queensland College of Arts, 2007. http://www4.gu.edu.au:8080/adt-root/public/adt-QGU20070824.160040.

Streszczenie:
This research undertaken through photographic studio practice and theory is the culmination of a four-year study into the nature of intimacy that answers the question: How can photographic practice assist our quest for intimacy with an ideal Other? Working closely with a number of adult volunteer participants living in South-East Queensland, the work commenced by mapping the intimate relationships between people, objects and space in bedrooms. Some of the initial works dealt with notions of sexual intimacy, because this is the most common understanding of intimacy in our society today, but the bedroom is also the place for other kinds of intimacy, such as contemplation or reading, and whether we are young or old, bedrooms are also used as a repository for intimate keepsakes and mementos. Intimacy is difficult to define, and furthermore, the meaning of the term has changed over the centuries. Intimacy is not a place, or a thing, or a person. One of the better definitions, by Thomas Moore, states, ‘The word intimacy means ‘profoundly interior.’ It comes from the superlative form of the Latin word inter, meaning ‘within.’ It could be translated ‘within-est,’ or ‘most within.’ In our intimate relationships, the ‘most within’ dimensions of ourselves and the other are engaged’. Therefore, it is a feeling that we might recognise in a moment with a partner, or a particular landscape, or the thoughts evoked by an object like a photograph, and most often these feelings concern ourselves and other people. While accepting that most photography (and human experience for that matter) is not intimate, snapshot and documentary portraiture often record moments of intimacy, revealing for example, the expression of another person’s face and subverting the barriers that usually mask our inner selves. But the photography in this project refused the relatively easy option of portraiture. Instead, in its final form, it sought to develop responses from the viewer to unusual conjunctions of skin and cloth – that evoke looking, touch and shape – and by implication suggest more historic ideas of intimacy than those commonly based on sexual intimacy today. The work shows that intimacy has aspects to it that are uncanny (in the Freudian sense), that intimacy does not always have to be invested in interpersonal human relationships, and that keeping aspects of oneself from others and knowing oneself can offer a richer experience of intimacy than giving oneself in the all-or-nothing tradition of Romanticism. The research also demonstrates that scholarly and common notions of intimacy – based respectively on interpersonal relationships and sex – are often reductive and partial within a desire for an authentic experience of intimacy, because they are usually based on the binary oppositions that underpin Western thought. To counter these tendencies, the theory and practice in this research evidences a ‘middle way’ – centred on androgyny within male psychosexual development, expressed through the psychological theories of the desire between the Self and Other – that can collapse the binary oppositions of masculine/feminine and thereby offer new insights into gender, self and interpersonal relationships. These ideas are suggested by the studio practice that constitutes the final body of artworks – the Intimacy Series – plus the analytical and theoretical research that supports my conclusions, and my observations of the responses to the works by audiences at exhibitions. In my experience, the mix of pleasure, intrigue and uncertainty that audiences exhibit suggests that they are often ‘caught’ by the Lacanian gaze of the artworks, which suggests a more complex range of characteristics within intimacy than is usually recognized today.

There is an ongoing interest in analyzing the flow characteristics of swimming fish. Biology has resulted in some very efficient motions and formulating these motions is of interest to engineers. One such theory was written by Dr. William Vorus and Dr. Brandon Taravella involving ideal efficiency. It is therefore interesting to test the calculations to see if it is possible to design a motion that can create thrust without necessarily creating vorticity. The computational fluid dynamics software of ANSYS Fluent was used to calculate the resulting flow field of the eel motion to compare with the theoretical values.

Students perception on stalking differ. Women consider that more casesare stalking while men consider that these cases do not classifies asstalking. Men is more often thinking that it is the victims own fault thathe or she is a victim of crime. There is ideal victims and non-idealvictims, which depending on the victims’ characteristics. The purposewith this study is to examine how students perceive the victims’vulnerability, depending on if the victim is an ideal victim or non-ideal.The study has used a mixed design which means that there will be bothquantitative results and qualitative results. The study was conductedthat the respondents read one out of two cases and then answered aquestionnaire. The results show that there are differences between menand women’s perceptions. Women consider the victims exposure to beequally severe while men consider the ideal victim’s exposure onstalking to be more severe than the non-ideal. Women however, perceive that the non-ideal victim had been exposed to stalking ingreater extent than the ideal victim while men consider the opposite. The respondents consider that the victims should handle theirvulnerable positions through reporting to the police and contact theirrelatives. The overall result of the study shows that the majority of thestudents perceive stalking as severe but the differences lays in howsevere the students perceive there is.

The differential mobility classifier (DMC) is one of the core components in electrical mobility particle sizers for sizing sub-micrometer particles. Designing the DMC requires knowledge of the geometrical and constructional imperfection (or tolerance). Studying the effects of geometrical imperfection on the performance of the DMC is necessary to provide manufacturing tolerance and it helps to predict the performance of geometrically imperfect classifiers, as well as providing a calibration curve for the DMC. This thesis was accomplished via studying the cylindrical classifier and the parallel plate classifier. The numerical model was built using the most recent versions of COMSOL Multiphysics® and MATLAB®. For the cylindrical DMC, two major geometrical imperfections were studied: the eccentric annular classifying channel and the tilted inner cylinder/rod. For the parallel-plates DMC, the first study examined for the perfectly designed plates to optimize its dimensions and working conditions, while the second study conducted the plates’ parallelism. For both DMCs, a parametric study was conducted for several tolerances under various geometrical factors (i.e., channel length, width, spacing, cylinders radii, etc…), flow conditions (i.e., sheath-to-aerosol flow ratio, total flow rate), and several particles sizes. The results show that the transfer function deteriorated as the geometrical imperfection increased (i.e., the peak is reduced and the width at the half peak height is broadened). The parallel- plates DMC results show that the aspect ratio of the classifying channel cross-section (width-to-height) was recommended to be above 8. Particle diffusivity reduces the effect of geometrical imperfection, especially for particle sizes less than 10 nm.

The purpose of this study is to review the norms and ideals within the area of motorsports. The main focus is within circuit racing and particularly Formula one, WEC, World Endurance Championship, and the Le Mans 24h race. Furthermore, the ambition is to examine culture within the sports as well as what it will take to reach a professional level as a driver in a major racing series. A total of three (3) interviews have been conducted to further deepen the question at issue. Alongside the interviews, two (2) observations has been executed internationally to study the theories on site of racing events. The gathered material has since been analyzed and two perspectives have emerged: The image of the sport; and the image of the driver. From the two (2) perspectives, we can derive more subordinate perspectives. Derived from the image of the sport the following perspectives arose: danger and rivalry. From the image of the driver the following three perspectives can be procured; the vulnerable driver, the perfectionist as well as the (un)healthy driver.   The result is pointing to a sport in constant alteration. From the incipient events of motorsport leading up to present, there has been a substantial development both within the sport itself as well as from a driver perspective. As the sport evolved from notoriously dangerous and potentially lethal to relatively safe, other elements have emerged and become major factors such as individualism, rivalry and politics. With a larger commercialization and professionalization, the demands of the driver have increased substantially. The driver needs to be more complete than ever, both on the track as well as off the track.

This report investigates how aesthetically motivated design and decorative elements could be used in order to create beautiful urban environments and how this could be achieved with traditional design. In order to gain some insight in how those questions are viewed today, a short literature study was made in which examples of arguments used in the debate were put together. Thereafter a case study was carried out which searched to answer the questions how beautiful environments were created in the building project of Sankt Eriksområdet in Stockholm and how this was made with traditional design. The results from the literature study and the case study were then finally summarized and discussed together. The conclusion is made that Sankt Eriksområdet wasn’t designed with the specific purpose to create beautiful environments. On the other hand there was an architectural ambition with the purpose to create continuity and variation in harmony and the work to achieve this goal reminds of what the proponents of “beautiful” architecture in the literature study asks for. The projects design was based on its location. Since the place of the project was located in the inner city of Stockholm, which largely consists of old and traditionally designed buildings, the implementation of traditional design became a naturally choice. Together with traditional design the project was designed to suit the specific conditions of the place and therefore the result wasn’t a copy of the inner city but a unique result built after the same principles.

In this thesis, a phenomenological approach is taken as the purpose is to discuss how the healthcare experiences of Swedish patients with chronic illness are affected by political state reforms and governing technologies. The thesis compares the discourse of Swedish healthcare policy with the discourse of healthcare in practice. Swedish healthcare has gone through major changes during the past decades, which have affected the state-to-patient relationship. This shift involved a transfer of responsibility from the state to its citizens, enabled through patient empowerment. In this change, a new ideal patient-role emerged, which is the patient as an informed and active consumer. What this thesis shows is the existence of a discrepancy between the ideal patient-role in governmental writing and the same ideal patient-role in the reality of the healthcare system. The ethnography consists of a literature study of healthcare policy documents and interviews with ten informants about their experiences of healthcare, in connection with the chronic diseases that affected their lives. The aim has been to examine the governing qualities of healthcare policy and practice, implementing Foucault’s theory of governmentality and technologies of the self.

The general purpose of this research is to contribute to the comprehension of how the subject is involved in the contemporary society. In order to achieve this objective, we limit ourselves to discussing how the operation of the superego can be of great help in understanding the capitalism characterized by the incessant consumption of merchandise. First, we adopt the ideas that superego is structural in the subject and that, no matter what social configurations, it points out the lack and orders the seek for total jouissance. In order to show these both notions are accurate and understand the theories related to the concept in details, we conduct a careful study based on the main formulations of Freud and Lacan. Despite the fact that this study doesn t take into account what Lacan says after 1964, it s possible to prove that superego is related to the entrance into the culture and that it maintains its structure of jouissance imperative in every society. From this point on, we discuss the superego course of action in contemporary society articulating it with the Other ideal. While superego presents an injunction without a specific content and related to the Real, the Other, although invariable in its symbolic structure, is influenced by historical aspects. The Other ideal, influenced by capitalism that promotes consumption, offers the subject of the desire, characterized by the lack, the fantasy that the total jouissance is possible through buying what is sold by the market. From our point of view, present capitalism takes advantage of the structure of the superego, which always points out the lack of the subject and orders the search for jouissance. Superego is important to the adherence to consumption because without its injunctions the Other ideal wouldn t have any imperative strength. The presence of the superego, as a look that observes and a voice that criticizes, is essential to the consumption as the Other ideal. Without it, it would not act as an imperative. This research shows that the theory of superego has to be considered when we intend to understand how the subject is implicated in contemporary capitalism

The focus of this study is to examine the aesthetics due to a new residential area, Glasberga Sjöstad, located in the outskirts of Södertälje. During the first construction process in the housing estate, some of the buildings appeared not familiar to the Swedish norm, and they did not fit into the concept Garden City, “trädgårdsstaden”. The main research question is to investigate the aesthetics and planning ideals according to the forming of Glasberga Sjöstad and the study focus on the lack of consistency between the vision and the everyday-reality. Another important starting-point is questions about ethnic segregation and aspects of power relations between a majority and a minority in the society. Former research points at causal factors as socioeconomic imbalances and class-aspects as important to understand the ethnic- and race segregated Swedish society, and the main research question in this study, is to add a focus on the aesthetics as an important aspect and more, to pay attention to the middleclass-citizens. The study is built upon in-depth interviews with residents in Glasberga Sjöstad and analyses of planning documents and aesthetic guidelines due to the construction process. The material shows that the aesthetic guidelines are built upon former ideals and it also shows that the inhabitant of Glasberga pay less attentions to the aesthetics of the houses, than to the social relations with their neighbours. The outcome of this study proposes the aesthetics as an important matter in planning and power practices, and proposes for a more open-minded way to embrace and include cultural diversity.

In the past decade semiconductor surface science has successfully studied the electronic structure and reconstructions of totally bare semiconductor surfaces. Recently experimentalists have begun to assume a more active role1,2 in modifying surface chemical structures to passivate the surface, i.e., to render the surface states electronically inactive. We can expect that this work will evolve more and more toward the artificial synthesis of surface chemical-bonding structres with desired physical properties. From the point of view of electronics, it is desirable to covalently satisfy all surface bonds, thereby shifting the surface states out of the band gap and into the valence and conduction bands.

Streszczenie:
Our research collaboration has begun a project to develop an Ideal Project Law (IPL). What we are trying to accomplish is the development of some equation with a mathematical underpinning that can usefully relate Functionality, Cost, Schedule and Risk which can then be graphed, and this graph then becomes a decision making and communications aid. For some of us, the current contention is that a possible IPL is analogous to the Ideal Gas Law (IGL), which relates Pressure (P), Volume (V) and Temperature (T) for reasonably well-behaved gases. (P*V)/T = Constant (where the constant has very much to do with the nature of the gas under discussion). This is due to our belief that the IPL will represent some form of a relationship (inverse or direct) between Cost (C), Schedule (S), Functionality (F) and Risk (R) much like the IGL represents relationships between P, V and T for a given gas. We also expect that at least some of the factors will change based on the type of project, so we might have to develop a range of factors and constants. The Ideal Gas Law informs us, for example, that if you keep V fixed and increase P, then you can expect T to also increase. So “keep this one factor fixed, and change that other factor and then watch the third factor move one way or the other” relationships can be described via the Ideal Gas Law. We believe that this “push on one factor and see what happens to the other factors” feature of the Ideal Gas Law seems to be very analogous to project and operation Cost, Schedule, Functionality and Risk relationships. This law, or some such function, is absolutely essential. Having such a Law that is proven valid will introduce (or rather tactfully enforce) some systematic thinking in the project and operational management set-up. Otherwise, no matter how elaborate a case is made for project or operational risks, the risk decisions will be left to the whims, fancies and moods of the key decision-making person(s) in the organization or project — we are working towards reducing this subjectivity in decision-making. We may determine that it is impossible to have a 100% scientific outlook on project or operational factors simply because human beings are involved, but if that is the case, we may be able to be at least 80% scientific about it.

Streszczenie:
Introduction: A student mentor is someone who shares his or her knowledge with a less experienced colleague in order to help the other developing his or her full academic potential by providing him/ her with the right guidance and support during his learning, social and academic integration processes. Objective: To assess the features higher education students consider to be the most effective characteristics their Student Peer Mentor should possess. Method: A descriptive-exploratory study, with a cross-sectional focus, involving a sample of 306 higher education health students, with a mean age of 21.15 (± 3,540) years. 81.7% of the participants are female. Data collection was achieved using Cunha’s Ideal Mentor Faces Scale (2017) with images adapted from Botas, Gabriel & Welling, (1997/1998). Results: Results show that 61.8% of the students surveyed would like to be student mentors and that most participants (54.2%) look at their ideal mentor as someone who possesses positive features, while 12,1% of the participants would choose for their ideal mentor a student whose features might suggest the existence of a risk profile. Finally, and paradoxically, 33.7% of them would choose a student mentor who tends to exhibit certain negative features. Positive characteristics were granted the highest mean values. Those values ranged between Satisfied (68%), Tranquil (78.1%); Optimistic (85%); Confident (88.2%) and Interested (87.9%). Conclusions: Results suggest that higher education students value the existence of student mentors with positive features/characteristics and realize that their existence is of great pedagogical importance. Therefore, there is now a greater need to ask higher education students to participate in Mentoring programs implemented with the support of second or third year Student Mentors who, on a voluntary basis, using their experiences and academic experiences can supervise incoming first year students (Mentee Students) in order to facilitate their integration and their adaptation to the different dimensions (pedagogical, scientific, social and any other) of the academic environment.

We derive coupled equations for ideal modes of an optical waveguide using the Green′s function technique. Our results, in particular those for the interaction between TM polarized modes in a grating structure, are consistent with experiments and with the results of other methods used to analyze optical waveguides. Because the method is based on the modes of the ideal waveguide it is versatile, and can, for example, easily deal with problems in which the perturbed waveguide contains an additional index of refraction. A further attractive feature is that finite beam effects are included in a natural way.

(Lz 132) is a very emblematic tale of Pu Songling’s (蒲松齡, 1640–1715), as it involves emblematic themes of Liaozhai zhiyi (聊齋誌異): a critical view of society, an adventure into enchanted lands, and a complex relationship to an independent, powerful woman. The tale tells about the journey of a man who, after having been lost at sea, visits two imaginary worlds. Luosha Haishi reveals its originality when comparing both these places. The first one, the Country of Rakshasas, is a state in which physical appearance determines one’s social status. This society is a satirical portrayal mirroring Pu’s vision of Qing China officialdom. Conversely, the City of the Sea, the character’s second place of stay, is a utopian undersea place where the character knows immediate success. Luosha Haishi thus makes the bitter statement of the impossibility to access glory and richness when one does not wish to hide behind appearances, while for it to occur it would require an ideal world that exists only in imagination.

Abstract A new set of MATLAB based functions have been written for providing fluid property data and solving thermodynamics problems. One function utilizes NIST property tables for pure real fluids (e.g. water, various refrigerants, propane, etc.), and provides desired properties when provided with any two other independent properties. Properties can be obtained for liquids, vapors, and two-phase mixtures. Another function provides properties for a range of pure ideal gases using NASA functions for specific heats. Enthalpies are referenced to include the heat of formation, so the function is useful for solving combustion problems. A third function utilizes the ideal gas function to provide ideal gas properties for dry air, assuming a mixture of 78% N2, 21% O2, and 1% Ar by volume. A fourth function uses the air and real fluid functions to provide properties for moist air. Additional functions are available to generate property plots. All functions can be used with the SI or the U.S. Customary unit systems. The functions are described, and examples are provided in which they are used to solve thermodynamics problems. When used in conjunction with built-in MATLAB commands, the new functions are useful for parametric and optimization studies. The full package, including function codes and data files, requires 2.5 MB of disk space and is available at no cost.

The ideal gas equation of state is defined for a theoretical gas composed of molecules that have perfect elastic collisions and no intermolecular interchange forces. However, it has been widely reported that such an ideal model may not be a realistic representation under certain circumstances, in particular when the compressibility factor (Z) is not close to unity, and the consideration of other equations of state (real models) is imperative. This study investigates the effect of using different equations of state, namely, the van der Waals, Redlich-Kwong, and Peng-Robinson equations, in the ideal isothermal analysis of a rotary displacer Stirling engine with the most commonly used gases, helium and air. The results are obtained numerically considering two major SE applications (cryocooling and distributed power generation) and two sets of operating conditions, and plotted in the form of Pressure-Volume diagrams. The amount of work per cycle based on the ideal gas model is taken as reference to compare the results from other models. The data show that at low pressure or high temperature conditions (corresponding to low density), the ideal gas equation is suitable for both gases, and using different models has no significant impact in the overall analysis. Additionally, while the use of ideal gas model is rather practical and fast, implementation of other models necessitate intensive computational processes.

Streszczenie:
Populists are generally known as supporters of referendums and several populist parties have promoted direct democracy in recent years. To deepen our understanding of the populism referendum link, this study analyses how populist parties in Austria, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands defend a greater use of referendums and how their non-populist counterparts respond to this populist call for referendums. An analysis of election manifestos shows that populist parties justify their referendum support by characterizing referendums as a purely democratic ideal, by presenting it as an alternative to decision-making by ‘bad’ political elites or by promoting referendums as a tool to realise their preferred policy decisions. Populist referendum support is thus related to people-centrism and ant-elitism, as elements of a populist ideology, but also to strategic considerations. These lines of argument are used by both populists on the right and the left, but anti-elitism is particularly prominent in manifestos of radical rightwing populist parties. Populists are not the only supporters of direct democracy – however, there is no evidence that non-populist parties did become more favourable towards referendums to adapt to the populist call for a greater referendum use.

Academic publishing processes are shaped by the ways in which scholars within the field review and evaluate the work of their peers. In an ideal world, these methods would simply promote the publication of the best forms of research without prejudice or subjectivity. In reality, issues such as Knobloch-Westerwick, Glynn, and Huge’s Matilda effect, Merton’s Matthew effect, Blank’s institution bias, and Robert’s and Verhoef’s gender bias shape the ways that scholarly inquiry are evaluated. Knowing that the peer review process can introduce issues of bias, what then of other aspects of the publishing cycle? For example, what of the subvention funding provided by some institutions to support their faculty in pursuing dissemination of research in Open Access (OA) journals? Chloroplasts are the site of photosynthesis and of other essential biosynthetic activities in plant cells. Chloroplasts are semi-autonomous organelles, since they contain their own genomes and protein biosynthetic machinery, but depend on the coordinate expression of nuclear genes to assemble macromolecular complexes. The bioeingineering of plants requires manipulation of chloroplast gene expression, and thus a knowledge of the molecular mechanisms that modulate mRNA and protein production. In this proposal the heterotrophic green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has been used as a model system to understand the control and interrelationships between transcription termination, mRNA 3' end processing and mRNA stability in chloroplasts. Chlamydomonas is a unique and ideal system in which to address these issues, because the chloroplast can be easily manipulated by genetic transformation techniques. This research uncovered new and important information on chloroplast mRNA 3' end formation and mRNA stability. In particular, the 3' untranslated regions of chloroplast mRNAs were shown not to be efficient transcription terminators. The endonucleolytic site in the 3' untranslated region was characterized by site directed mutagensis and the role of several 3' untranslated regions in modulating RNA stability and translation has been studied. This information will allow us to experimentally manipulate the expression of chloroplast genes in vivo by post-transcriptional mechanisms, and should be widely applicable to other higher plant systems.

Review question / Objective: The Effect of β-alanine Supplementation on Athletic Performance in Female Athletes: a Systematic Review of Randomized Control Trials. Condition being studied: β-alanine is an endogenously produced non-proteinogenic amino acid that can also be obtained through the consumption of foods such as meat. The ergogenic effect of β-alanine supplementation is linked to the levels of carnosine (a cytoplasmatic dipeptide to which β-alanine is a precursor). It has become one of the most common sports nutrition ergogenic aids, with typical doses at about 4 to 6 g per day that are ideal to elevate muscle carnosine concentrations by up 80%. This elevation happens regardless of high or low baseline levels (common in vegetarians, women and in older subjects) and chronic supplementation (and the associated increase of muscle carnosine levels) is known to be of particular interest in improving high-intensity exercise performance by enhancing intracellular H+ buffering, reducing muscle acidosis. It has been mostly proposed as beneficial in exercises between 60 seconds and 4 minutes, but some positive effects have been noted in other sport-related outcomes. The fact that women tend to have less muscle carnosine content then man, in addition to other characteristics of the female athlete, highlights the importance of understanding if the outcomes and magnitude of the effects already found and stablished in male athletes are, in fact, equivalent in the female athlete.

In 2020, the University of Dundee initiated the development of an Open Research strategy. As part of this initiative, in February 2021 the University’s Library and Learning Centre together with Open Research Champions from the Schools of Health Sciences and Dentistry, formed an Open Research Working group. To build on the University’s Open Research policy and infrastructure, the purpose of the group was to facilitate ongoing research and development of best practice approaches for our interdisciplinary environment to make outputs, data and other products of our research publicly available. Through informal consultations with academic staff and students, the Open Research Working Group found that: → access and reach of research findings can be amplified through effective knowledge mobilisation, and stakeholder and patient and public involvement; and → there was a need for guidance and resources on how-to implement knowledge mobilisation activities with and for stakeholders throughout the entire research process – from proposal development to project completion. In June 2021, the Open Research working group, in partnership with Simon Fraser University’s Knowledge Mobilization Hub began the development of an Integrated Knowledge Translation (IKT) Toolkit, with funding support from the University of Dundee’s Doctoral Academy and Organisational Professional Development. IKT is an approach to knowledge translation that emphasises working in an engaged and collaborative partnership with stakeholders throughout the research cycle in order to have positive impact. The aim was to co-produce evidence-informed, best practice learning materials on how-to: → maintain ongoing relationships between researchers, community stakeholders and decisionmakers in research development and implementation; and → facilitate an integrated, participatory way of knowledge production whereby researchers, practitioners and other knowledge users can collaborate to co-generate new and accessible knowledge that can be utilised in contexts ranging from supporting community development to policy guidance for practice. The IKT Toolkit was informed by a focused evidence review and synthesis of published peer-reviewed and grey literature and consists of eight knowledge briefs and a slide deck co-produced for use in any discipline or sector. Each knowledge brief provides practical guidance and resources to support an IKT process in each of eight key research stages: (i) Partnership Building; (ii) Generating Priorities and Ideas; (iii) Proposal development; (iv) Study Design; (v) Data Collection; (vi) Data Analysis; (vii) Reporting and (viii) Dissemination. The current knowledge brief provides IKT guidance on Research Stage 2: Generating Priorities and Ideas.

Streszczenie:
Several sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX) deposits have alkaline magmatism that is temporally and spatially associated to mineralization. This report outlines interim data from a study of potential linkages between magmatism and SEDEX mineralization in the Selwyn Basin, Yukon. This region is an ideal study site due to the close spatial and temporal relationships between SEDEX deposits and magmatism, particularly in the MacMillan Pass, where volcanic rocks have been drilled with mineralization at the Boundary deposit. Alkaline volcanic samples were analysed from the Anvil District, MacMillan Pass, Keno-Mayo and the Misty Creek Embayment in the Selwyn Basin to characterise volcanism and examine the relationship to mineralization. Textural and field relationships indicate a volatile-rich explosive eruptive volcanic system in the MacMillan Pass region in comparison to the Anvil District, which is typically effusive in nature. High proportions of calcite and ankerite in comparison to other minerals are present in the MacMillan system. Cathodoluminescence imaging reveals zoning and carbonate that displays different luminescent colours within the same sample, likely indicating multiple generations of carbonate precipitation. Barium contents are enriched in volcanic rocks throughout the Selwyn Basin, which is predominately hosted by hyalophane with rare barite and barytocalcite. Thallium is positively correlated with Ba, Rb, Cs, Mo, As, Sb and the calcite-chlorite-pyrite index and is negatively correlated with Cu. Anvil District samples display a trend towards depleted mid-ocean ridge mantle on a plot of Ce/Tl versus Th/Rb. Hydrothermal alteration has likely led to the removal of Tl from volcanic rocks in the region. Ongoing research involves: i) the analysis of Sr, Nd, Pb and Tl isotopes of volcanic samples; ii) differentiating magmatic from hydrothermal carbonate using O, C and Sr isotopes; iii) examining sources of Ba in the Selwyn Basin; iv) and constraining age relationships through U-Th-Pb geochronology.

Streszczenie:
The steady-state level of a given mRNA is determined by its rates of transcription and degradation. The stabilities of chloroplast mRNAs vary during plant development, in part regulating gene expression. Furthermore, the fitness of the organelle depends on its ability to destroy non-functional transcripts. In addition, there is a resurgent interest by the biotechnology community in chloroplast transformation due to the public concerns over pollen transmission of introduced traits or foreign proteins. Therefore, studies into basic gene expression mechanisms in the chloroplast will open the door to take advantage of these opportunities. This project was aimed at gaining mechanistic insights into mRNA processing and degradation in the chloroplast and to engineer transcripts of varying stability in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells. This research uncovered new and important information on chloroplast mRNA stability, processing, degradation and translation. In particular, the processing of the 3' untranslated regions of chloroplast mRNAs was shown to be important determinants in translation. The endonucleolytic site in the 3' untranslated region was characterized by site directed mutagensis. RNA polyadenylation has been characterized in the chloroplast of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and chloroplast transformants carrying polyadenylated sequences were constructed and analyzed. Data obtained to date suggest that chloroplasts have gene regulatory mechanisms which are uniquely adapted to their post-endosymbiotic environment, including those that regulate RNA stability. An exciting point has been reached, because molecular genetic studies have defined critical RNA-protein interactions that participate in these processes. However, much remains to be learned about these multiple pathways, how they interact with each other, and how many nuclear genes are consecrated to overseeing them. Chlamydomonas is an ideal model system to extend our understanding of these areas, given its ease of manipulation and the existing knowledge base, some of which we have generated.

Streszczenie:
M. Sergeyev’s article “Ukrainian National Idea in the Modern Ukrainian Media Space” states that modern Ukrainian philosophical thought tries to get rid of the flaws and stereotypes of its one-sided orientation “to the East” and tries to establish a European orientation in the minds of Ukrainian citizens. The theoretical proof of the new worldview took place throughout the formation of the Ukrainian state from Little Russia to Ukraine and presents its actual struggle for independence. It is an integral concept that reflects the process of forming theories and views of prominent Ukrainian thinkers on the place and role of Ukrainians in the becoming and development of an independent Ukrainian state. As O. Zabuzhko emphasizes, “all Ukrainian philosophical, historical, sociological thought of the past and our centuries (including the diaspora) is permeated with the sacred idea of nationalism”. The author concludes that the logic of the historical development of the Ukrainian national idea reveals only one model of its socio-political future, which implies the need for Ukraine’s integration into the European and world community. This path requires the moral and political readiness of the entire Ukrainian society for its implementation and prevents the emergence of any other - alternative ideas. Solving this problem is complicated by the need to return to Ukraine the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk regions. Of course, this model will lead to significant political and economic tensions in society (the final severance of economic relations with Russia, the closure of non-competitive industries, the outflow of labor to the west). At the same time, the orientation of the Ukrainian national idea to the west will increase competition in all branches of production and will be a condition for further self-improvement of Ukrainian society.

Streszczenie:
This paper builds on our study on research on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The study was commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF) and was conducted in 2019. Our study undertook a systematic literature review, which evaluated over 2,000 scientific publications, classifying some 300 as relevant to the topic and examined them in greater detail. One focus area was the institutionalisation of research on TVET in sub-Saharan Africa, its actors, networks and funding. A second area focused on the topics and content addressed by researchers on TVET in SSA. Our comprehensive study allows us to derive indications for future TVET research in SSA, which form the content of the present paper. Our recommendations for future research emerge from: The research literature analysed; A series of expert interviews; and A Structured Community Review. Our key contribution is an extension of the Mulder-Roelofs Vocational Education and Training Research Framework of categories for TVET research. The framework reflects the focus and quality criteria of European/German TVET, and is an ideal starting point. Through our research, we revised and extended the framework for use in SSA. Our goal was to build on international standards on the one hand, but on the other hand to extend and apply those for use in SSA. It therefore makes it possible to respond to the latest state of research both from a European perspective (e.g., donors/organisations like BMBF), as well as to examine the broad spectrum of very different aspects of TVET research in SSA. After presenting the relevant categories of TVET research, the authors go into detail on the topics for further research. Their conclusion recommends continuous research monitoring based on a constantly updated international network of researchers and institutions with an interest in TVET research in SSA. In particular, we propose a coordinated effort for an online, international community of stakeholders and researchers involved in TVET research in sub-Saharan Africa (https://convet.org).
