Pełny tekst źródłaAbstract :On three occasions in the 20th century, the American army invaded the territory of the Côte d'Azur to install rest and leisure facilities there. In 1918 and 1919, a double leave and convalescence center set up in the big hotels on the coast welcomed thousands of Sammies every week after the armistice. In turn, in 1945, a huge recreational center received GIs coming from European combat zones to relax. Finally, in the 1950s and 1960s, the Sixth Fleet of the American Navy, whose flagship declared its homeport at Villefranche-sur-Mer, increased its stopovers in the ports of the Maralpine and Var coast. For local tourism professionals, the arrival of these soldiers represents a hope of reviving their activities in the aftermath of the two world wars, and additional resources in a context of massification of the sector from the 1950s. For the US army, the stakes are multiple: the establisment of recreational structures must be an opportunity to affirm the greatness of the United States and to spread american values. Soldiers on leave, transformed into good will ambassadors, multiply the demonstrations of power while participating in the cultural diplomacy of their country. The local populations welcome these demonstrations differently, oscillating between rejection of certain behaviors and fascination for the elements of modernity brought by the boys, like baseball, basketball, jazz and rock'n roll. In return, the discovery of the Côte d'Azur and its inhabitants arouses various reactions among the men on leave: generally welcoming the beauty and picturesqueness of the place, the latter however denounce the abuse of certain traders and are surprised by some archaisms. The female question crosses the period: American prejudices on the lightness of French women do not spare the Azurean women, sometimes victims of aggression and harassment. Prostitution is growing. However, some Franco-American unions are born of this military presence, constituting as many cros sed cultural vectors. Finally, the economic repercussions, real at the end of the two wars, less substantial in the 1950s and 1960s, were accompanied by an acceleration of the transformations affecting regional tourism: transition from winter activity to summer tourism, appearance of a middle-class clientele and adaptation of hotel structures to meet a demand for minimal comfort. The year 1967 was marked by the departure of the American community linked to the Villefranche base, following France's withdrawal from NATO's integrated command, thus ending several decades of an original reappropriation of the Côte d'Azur territory

Pełny tekst źródłaAmerican firms in France have been studied from 1890 to 1990, from the archives of the American Chamber of Commerce in France (AmCham). This source provides the elements of an analysis of the collective actions they implemented and the influence they had on French firms over five successive periods where there was more or less a consistency between their actions and the US government’s decisions. In the first periode (1890-1914), AmCham was a club of wealthy businessmen in a prestigious environment. In the second one (1914-1945), it was an employer’s association, with more members but in a context of wars and crisis, without a common strategy. In the third one (1945-1970), it was an efficient instrument of the Marshall Plan and later the « American challenge ». In the fourth one (1970-1990), with a growing number of firms, with the European project gaining ground, US policy’s reluctance to FDI and US firms becoming more and more « frenchized », significant factors of fragility appeared and finally in the fifth one (after 1990), AmCham, whose influence has diminished, is trying painfully to identify new elements of solidarity between its members in the new context of globalization. From this source, the study focuses on cultural interactions between AmCham and its environment and the spread of the American management model, which led to a large « frenchization » of American subsidiaries in France

Pełny tekst źródłaAfter the end of World War II, it seemed to French leaders that Latin America was once again a region where France - whose earlier power is but a memory - can still maintain its influence and its prestige. Nevertheless, France will always find on its path the great victors of World War II, and its greatest competitor in all domains since the war: the United States. In both French diplomatic archives as well as in works written by intellectuals or diplomats, French concerns about American influence in Latin America, especially in Brazil, are evident. And what is more, France itself has been subjected to the political, economic and even cultural influence of the United States within its own borders. It is then that so-called French "anti-Americanism" returns in full force, as can be gathered from French documentation produced regarding Latin America and Brazil. The present work thus attempts to show that French concerns on the subject of American influence in Latin America and brazil are not entirely new - having been in evidence since the 19th century - but have only intensified since 1945. In the period dealt with by this study (1944-1960), French attitudes toward Brazil will be oriented by the concern to show an image of France just as modern as the United States, and at the same time attempting to recover a traditional France, whose values remain universal

Pełny tekst źródłaThe objectives of bankruptcy law are varied and evolve over time and situation. Eradicating and punishing bad debtors and guaranteeing payment to creditors are traditional goals. Ensuring the survival of the company and preventing difficulties are modern goals. This diversity leads to a hierarchy of objectives. A comparative study contrasts pro-debtor and pro-creditor systems according to the priority of their identified objectives. It shows that the objective of legislations tends towards the salvaging of companies. Federal US law, founded on the principle of fresh start, inspires laws in Europe. Economic analysis of law reiterates the question of the objectives of bankruptcy law from the perspective of an efficient legal standard, explaining this tendency. The search for procedural and substantial efficiency guides the European Commission in the promotion of a single market. Therefore, consensus on the objective of salvaging the company makes harmonization of the substantive rules at the European level possible. The revision of Regulation (EC) N°1346/2000 on insolvency proceedings confirms the general acceptance of the idea of a second chance. The opposition between pro-debtor and pro-creditor systems diminishes, giving way to a mixed system. Each law attempts to move towards the reconciliation of conflicting interests, leading to the displacement of the value of respect for the word towards the concept, more difficult to define, but which founds binding obligation: trust

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the context of the First World War centennial celebrations, this thesis aims towards a new comprehension of the current Great War historiography. Indeed, based on the example of the American forces established in the Central-West region of France between 1917 and 1921, the goal is to find the various connections created on all levels, between the two sides of the Atlantic. In October 1917, the Americans arrive at La Pallice, the port of La Rochelle, and from there they scattered through the region along a logistical axe, towards Tours. From Charente-Maritime to Indre-et-Loire, through the regions of Charente, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne, this study seeks to understand how via the American presence, the Central-West region opened up to the world. The paper shows that up to 1921 wherever there is an American base, the material and cultural physiognomy of the city changes. These aspects enable us to re-examine the term « Americanization » often used by historians in a unidirectional way. Furthermore, the love relationships that flourished between Frenchwomen and Sammies and the marriages that ensued offer the opportunity to reflect on a dialogue about gendered identities on either side of the ocean. Bringing a new light on the economic, social and cultural history of a zone at the back of the Great War, this study places the Central-West region in a connected history, on a scale that is international, thanks to county, communal and national archives
