Abstract: The objective of this study is to understand the reasons for which thousands of southerners emigrated from USA to Brazil at the end of the American Civil War, as an answer to the suppression of their political rights and the end of slavery. We argue that the main factor for the choice of Brazil as their destiny included the existence of slavery, and the abundant land. We analyzed their political actions and speeches before the war, which had a tendency of a conservative and pro-slavery tone. After the war, they established colonies, which destinies were associated to the difficulties of the immigrants to plug themselves again to a slave-market circuit, now at the southern hemisphere. The immigrants that were successful, for a certain period, were those living in Santa Bárbara, near Campinas. In Santarém and Linhares colonies, the inexistence of a strong slave-market circuit lead to the dispersion of the immigrants, as well as exogamic marriages. Despite the difficulties, both colonies had the presence of slavery. According to primary sources, the idea that the confederate immigration brought the means of production modernization does not sustain itself. What is verified is an adaptation to Brazilian agriculture traditional techniques and their involvement with relations of production resistant to innovation introduction

What can a study of non-theism tell us about the transformation of religious life in America? Non-theism, as an alternative religion, challenges the traditional theological and theoretical boundaries traditionally drawn between the sacred and the profane, religion and science, God and humanity. The advent of American non-theism, characterized by a worldview that does not rely on God, gods, or supernaturalism to answer humanity's "ultimate concerns," does not indicate a shift from belief to unbelief, nor religion to non-religion, but rather a shift from one form of religion to another. Once we recognize that non-theism denotes a change in the form of religion, rather than a decline in religiosity, we can forego the secularization thesis and focus instead on a crucial shift from unquestioned belief to critical inquiry. This change in religious life is not only indicative of non-theism; it is a key characteristic of the post-traditional American religious landscape.

Abstract: This thesis aims to present the results of the Master's research firstly entitled Aspects of the female authorship in Emily Dickinson's poetry, but whose title later became The issue of the female authorship in the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was an American poet whose work is widely known for its particular characteristics, both in its form and content: the excessive use of dashes, the grammar incorrections, the constant metaphors, paradoxes and irony, besides the images she makes of death, of God, of the womanly domestic environment and of the love relationships, among many other features that give her poetry a prominent place in the Western literature. Starting from the context in which her poetry is inserted, this researched aimed to investigate the relations between Emily Dickinson's poetry and the female authorship in an attempt to identify possible poetic manifestations of a gender relations awareness. In order to do that, we have taken the American literary feminist criticism as our theoretical and methodological basis. In a first moment, we have traced the trajectory developed by literary criticism in general since the first Dickinson's poems were published until the emergence and strengthening of the literary feminist criticism. After that, we have discussed the main questions of this critical view and also how they have worked with Emily Dickinson's poetry. Then we focus on her work to discuss how its most remarkable features may be related to the female authorship and we propose the analysis of three poems - "The Soul selects her own Society - ", "I'm "wife" - I've finished that - " and "My Life had stood - a Loaded Gun - " - in which we could see how the female authorship does... Pełny tekst źródłaCritics and biographers have summarized Elmore Leonard’s work too easily: he was one of the best crime novels writers in America because of his “cinematic” prose and his unerring ear for the voices of the characters. I think there are much more issues in Leonard’s narratives, so my thesis is focused on investigating other distinctive traits of his novels. Leonard actually wrote westerns for many years before first trying his hand at crime fiction (in The Big Bounce 1969), the genre that gave him great fame. My thesis basically examines three distinguishing features. First, in Leonard’s books there is almost never any process of detection. Readers generally know from the very beginning who the murderer is, and in many cases the detective finds out soon after, but he is always prevented from arresting or killing him at once. What prolongs his pursuit is generally not a process of investigation but rather a frustrating combination of legal procedural constraints that are often portrayed as arbitrary, and the killer’s own animal willingness and absurd good luck. Secondly, Leonard, in his narrative, develops a very distinctive point of view. The writer always tells his stories from the omniscient point of view in the third person, only apparently neutral. In Leonard’s novels any chapter can be narrated from the perspective of any character (even a murder victim as in Glitz). This issue is not only a technical problem, it is a moral one, who makes Leonard’s novels disturbing to the reader. Finally Leonard, who had a catholic education and a deep knowledge of the Bible, hides theological issues in his grotesque crime stories. For example, in his novels violence is never the right solution, never necessary, as his heroes prefer talking with the villain or leaving, instead of shooting him.

This dissertation is a three-pronged study examining American themes, celebrity, and collective identity associated with the television program American Idol. The study includes discourse analyses of the first seven seasons of the program, of the season seven official American Idol message boards, and of the 2002 and 2008 show press coverage. The American themes included a rags-to-riches narrative, archetypes, and celebrity. The discourse-formed archetypes indicate which archetypes people of varied races may inhabit, who may be sexual, and what kinds of sexuality are permitted. On the show emotional exhibitions, archetypal resonance, and talent create a seemingly authentic celebrity while discourse positioning confirms this celebrity. The show also fostered a complication-free national American collective identity through the show discourse, while the online message boards facilitated the formation of two types of collective identities: a large group of American Idol fans and smaller contestant-affiliated fan groups. Finally, the press coverage study found two overtones present in the 2002 coverage, derision and awe, which were absent in the 2008 coverage. The primary reasons for this absence may be reluctance to criticize an immensely popular show and that the American Idol success was no longer surprising by 2008. By 2008, American Idol was so ingrained within American culture that to deride it was to critique America itself. In sum, the findings were that American Idol presents an ideal version of American culture, where gender, race, and class issues are non-existent, power is shared democratically, the American national identity is fair, generous, familial, and celebrity and success are easily attainable. This idealization of contemporary American culture functions to sustain the current status quo of economic and cultural standards.

Huffman, John Michael. "Americans on Paper| Identity and Identification in the American Revolution". Thesis, Harvard University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3600182.
Pełny tekst źródłaThe American Revolution brought with it a crisis of identification. The political divisions that fragmented American society did not distinguish adherents of the two sides in any outward way. Yet the new American governments had to identify their citizens; potential citizens themselves had to choose and prove their identities; and both sides of the war had to distinguish friend from foe. Subordinated groups who were notionally excluded from but deeply affected by the Revolutionary contest found in the same crisis new opportunity to seize control over their own identities. Those who claimed mastership over these groups struggled to maintain control amid civil war and revolution.
To meet this crisis, American and British authorities and "Americans" of all sorts employed paper and parchment instruments of identification, including passes, passports, commissions, loyalty certificates, and letters of introduction. These were largely familiar instruments, many embodying the hierarchical and coercive social world from which the Revolution sprang. Access or subjection to certain classes of instruments depended on individuals' social standing and reflected their unequal power over their own identities. But they were now deployed to meet new challenges. The increased demands for identification brought to Revolutionary Americans in general degrees of scrutiny and constraint traditional reserved for the unfree, while subordinated groups faced an intensification of the regimes designed to govern them. The struggles to define, enforce, and contest Revolutionary identities reveal the ways the notionally voluntarist, republican Revolution, undertaken in the name of consent and equality, was effected through regimes of identification both exclusive and coercive.
While studies of early American identity are now common, there has been little study of the history of identification or identification papers in early America. Historians of this period have employed instruments of identification as sources, but they have rarely considered them as subjects of analysis in themselves. This study of the Revolutionary crisis of identification, from 1774 to 1783, examines the ways that these instruments of identification were used to identify "Americans" in the face of this crisis, at home and abroad, and therefore how the new United States were constituted through the identification of individuals.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis dissertation studies the largely unexamined role of land surveying in the emergence and growth of the United States and its literature. In the Introduction I argue that surveying was an indispensable technology of American expansion that provided the means through which new territories were incorporated and assimilated within the burgeoning nation. The national survey further created a vast archive of images and descriptions that diffused into the furthest reaches of American thought, social life, and representational practice, forming a powerful conceptual framework for "viewing" and imagining the nation and its seemingly inevitable future. American fiction during this period both served and resisted the survey's ideological program by providing-and also refuting-narratives of place, identity, and sovereignty necessary to authorize control of the western lands. Chapter One argues that Charles Brockden Brown's Edgar Huntly (1799) dramatizes the largely forgotten history of the nation's first territorial expansion into the Northwest Territory during the 1780s, illustrating how the United States used the promise of private property in land to bring an end to frontier violence and impose fundamental changes in frontier social relations that ultimately led to US control of the region. Chapter Two focuses on Helen Hunt Jackson's Ramona (1884) which depicts the role of the national survey in the reterritorialization of Alta California after 1848. The basic difficulty that plagued this contact zone involved the incorporation of a mosaic of spaces shaped by Spanish, Mexican, and Indian cultural practice and tradition into the social, legal, and economic structures of the United States-a process that might be described as the survey's "translation" of the idiomatic and informal spaces of Alta California into the uniform landscape of the nation. Chapter Three considers Louise Erdrich's Tracks (1988) and the instrumental role of the survey in a misguided national effort during the 1870s to "civilize" native peoples by introducing them to private property. Tracks exposes how the attempt to assimilate native peoples to the cultural and economic structures of the white communities surrounding them was accomplished through a profound, and destructive, revision of native space-the surveying of collectively held Indian lands into privately held allotments.

Pełny tekst źródłaNguyen, Jason R. "Staging Vietnamese America| Music and the performance of Vietnamese American identities". Thesis, Indiana University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1546986.
Pełny tekst źródłaThis study examines how Vietnamese Americans perform identities that acknowledge their statuses as diasporic Vietnamese to construct and maintain specifically Vietnamese American communities. I argue that music, especially public forms of musical expression within mass media and locally staged cultural performances, is a crucial way for Vietnamese Americans across the diaspora to transmit markers of cultural knowledge and identity that give them information about themselves and the "imagined community" constructed through their linked discourses.
The argument is organized around two main ideas that focus on broad cultural patterns and locally situated expressions, respectively. First, music produced by the niche Vietnamese American media industry is distributed across the diaspora and models discourses of Vietnamese identity as different companies provide different visions of what it means to be Vietnamese and perform Vietnamese-ness on stage. I analyze the music variety shows by three different companies (Thuy Nga Productions, Asia Entertainment, and Van Son Productions) to argue that Vietnamese American popular media should not be seen as representing a single monolithic version of Vietnamese-ness; rather, each articulation of Vietnamese identity is slightly different and speaks to a different formulation of the Vietnamese public, producing a discursive field for diverse Vietnamese American identity politics.
Secondly, I show how identity is always performed in particular places, illustrating that Vietnamese Americans performing music in different places can have vastly different understandings of that music and its relationship to their identities. Using a Peircian semiotic framework, I articulate a theory of place-making in which places become vehicles for the clustering of signs and meaning as people experience and interpret those places and make meaning there. As people's experiences imbue places with meaning, people coming from similar cultural backgrounds may gain different attachments to those places and one another and thus different understandings of their identities as Vietnamese. I use two contrasting examples of Vietnamese American communities in Indianapolis and San Jose to show how people in each place construct entirely different discourses of identity surrounding musical performance based upon their positionality within the diaspora.
